I talked to a long-time friend today.  Deepak Chopra and I have done close to a dozen interviews about his books over the years, many of those conversations knee-to-knee.

Today, we talked by phone on Open Book with Diana Page Jordan about his newest book Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul.  God, he’s razor-edge brilliant. Deepak has written more than fifty books.  How can someone be so prolific, and squeeze in, for example, our half-hour interview, and he was on The View earlier in the day, while writing a new book, while meeting with philanthropists about funding a more peaceful world.

Time. One of his five body breakthroughs in the book.  To be stressed over how much one has to do in a short period of time speeds up your biological clock, impedes your progress, leaves your emotions and thoughts tangled and tortured.  Deepak is effervescently present. I love it.  The feeling, and that he illustrates one of his key points.

He says the body is an informational field — you have to feed the right information into the body.  For example, consider someone telling you they love you, then someone telling you they are done, forever, with the relationship.  Very different body responses, right? No matter what is happening, move from Fear into Love.  It is this connectivity that ignites the cells, turns on the genes, alters the DNA that will make you younger, happier, that will heal whatever ails you.

Simple. It is your belief that runs your body.  One of my favorite closing questions over the years has been “what is your best hope for your book.”  Probably a decade ago, I asked Deepak that question, and he stymied me with his response, that he didn’t believe in Hope.  Why not?  We reprised that point today.  He says the presence of Hope, cannot exist without the presence of Despair.  And, he simply Knows.

So how do you heal, get younger, be happier?  Build whatever you intend into the mechanism.  For example, the giraffe, he says, has a long neck because the creature has his sights set on those leaves high up on the trees.  The intention turns on certain cells, genes, DNA.  Used to be we thought we were done growing mentally long before we hit our teen years.  Oh no, not so!  Science has been good to us!  It is revealing that there is more to learn about the nature of consciousness, Deepak says, and we know now about the brain’s plasticity.

Add joy and loving kindness, and we have amazing lives!  His message — we can literally reinvent our lives.  Isn’t that cool!

I was writing a previous blog and an idea came to me on how to approach my youtube channel. For those of you who don’t know, prior to today (Sunday November 29, 2009) I had accidentally broken my camera. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. A lot of synchronized events happened to me after the accident.

So maybe it was on purpose subconsciously, who knows lol…

But anyway, I just thought of this idea, I already manifested my previous camera through intention. So here is the deal. I have no job, but I’m doing what I love to do. At this very moment I have no proof of income, but I know as I do what I love I’m open to all forms of income. From a penny to $1,000,000 and everything up to and beyond those amounts.

So now that I’m open for all forms of income out of love, I no longer believe in stress. I am now noticing and accepting opportunities that earn me at least $5 for doing something I love.

I’m now noticing all other opportunities that bring a camera into my life. and opportunities that may bring something better than I can imagine. I can imagine a camera perfect for my youtube videos. I created two new channels and I will continue to make videos for my regular channel daily as I have this camera in my life. The ideas I have I know are HUGE and are for the good of all!

As I end this blog I now know that I’m noticing all opportunities including ones I may have overlooked to get a digital camera into my life. I know the camera has .wav file formatting so that I can edit my videos on windows movie maker, but I am not restricting myself to that. Whatever is best for me and does the highest good for all is what I know to be mine.

Now I let it go and do something else…

Wealth Programming Daily….? You know, I like that, don’t you? And who wouldn’t? I don’t personally believe that it works if your thoughts are not in alignment with your feelings and personal mind movies. Do you? Of course, we all already know how to manifest! So, what good is this….slow down those brain waves and let it in deep if…you are ready and receptively aligned.

I DO believe it works wonders when you’re in alignment with that incredible DOWNSTREAM FEELING that life is really GOOOODDDD! Watch!

I swear its just another form of the Law of Attraction….right, Abraham?

Well, apparantly I have finally seen how it is that I manifest.  And I find it easy.  The reason I also realized that I have trouble at times, is really because I just don’t want that much.  And it’s things I should want, but just don’t.  It’s very interesting.  When I want something, I notice, it’s based mostly on emotion, which is fickle.  Manifesting, isn’t fickle, but emotion is, I’ve learned that basing things on emotion will end up being chaotic.  Then I was thinking about all this last night, because I realized, I can manifest anything I want, once I realized how I did it.  Yet the issue really is what do I want?

And I suddenly had this thought:
Manifesting isn’t about what you want, it’s about what you intend to have.

When I get to that kind of mindset, then I manifest.  Want isn’t really the issue, want is just a mild desire, it’s when you just are ready for something, you get it.  I’m speaking strictly about manifesting, not what gets you to the place of manifesting, just the act of manifesting in  itself.

Who is Michael Losier?

• Originally grew up in New Brunswick, Canada

What does this mean?

After reading Michael Losiers Book on how to Apply the law of attraction in your life, the quotes I chose to use make more sense.

In his book he very simply explains the process of utitilizing the law of attraction in your favor by following very simple steps…

1. Identify you desire

• Make lists of what you don’t want and rephrase it to what you do want. ( for example – I don’t want get hurt vs. I am safe)
• He describes the list as contrasts (don’ts) and Clarity (do’s)
• Use lists to limit contrast from your thinking
• By changing language and thinking from Don’t and Can’t to Do and Can you can reprogram your thinking and attract abundance in all areas

2. Give your desire attention

• Give your desire more attention, energy and focus by writing, thinking and talking about what you desire
• Use affirmations that include I am in the process of …(a specific desire)
• Write down and create a desire statement

3. Allow it

• Allowing is the absence of Negative vibration or doubt
• Create allowing statements to change limiting beliefs- Something like- reminding yourself you know of someone else who has achieved what you hope to achieve – who was in the same boat as you
• Celebrate when you see success, give thanks for that success
• Ask for help or information to support your desires
• Surround yourself with positive thinkers

Negative thinking keeps us from making any kind of positive step toward any goal. The people who succeed at getting what they want most certainly believed it was possible and never gave up on the belief entirely. Some people would say that they had passing doubts about whether or not they would achieve their desired goal, but it usually didn’t last that long to take hold.

It is the negative thinking that gets in the way of taking the steps toward achieving goals.

I have had my share of being this kind of thinker. Since I believe anything is possible with effort I am usually falling on the side of positive thinking around achieving my desires, but there is still a part of me who doubts because of my own experience with having my enthusiastic ideas or desires get challenged with roadblocks.

The part of me that is still working through using the roadblocks as stepping sstones is still developing.

  This seems obvious for some and ludicrous for others. I think it means that no matter what happens, if you believe it is possible to achieve you will continue to take all of the steps toward that goal regardless of the obstacles which inevitably will lead to results.

Äntligen ligger min nya företagssida uppe på www.trotsig.se. Den gamla var från mycket tidigt 2000-tal, när jag var nystartad som firma, för åtta år sedan. Att jag startade den här sidan var nog dels för att testa att blogga och lära mig WordPress, dels för att skriva ner och samla saker som inspirerar mig på olika vis. Det har blivit ganska blandat innehåll.

Vart är den här bloggen på väg? Jag funderar, får se. Det mesta skrivandet kommer att ske på Trotsig.se nu – det kommer att handla om olika aspekter av kommunikation och skrivande. Där finns det redan en och annan användbar länksida, som tipsar om inspirerande platser för skriv- och språkintresserade. Kanske gör jag verklighet av mina idéer om att be att få publicera och samla grafisk form, typsnitt och bilder som jag tycker är intressanta – en mindre textinriktad och mer bildinriktad blogg. Rörlig bild kommer också att få plats, jag känner att det är viktigt att hålla sig ajour med rörlig bild och interaktiva presentationer.

Ibland har jag velat göra som Niclas Strandh, som på sin Deeped-blogg uppmärksammar och länkar massor av personer med bloggar och berättar varför han tycker de är intressanta på ett eller annat sätt. Men det är ju ett mastodontprojekt (vore typiskt mig att ge mig i ett sådant mastodontprojekt, jag är ganska manisk av mig när det gäller att ta in och sammanställa information om jag bara tar mig tid att sitta ostörd – vilket man sällan gör i ett familjeliv och med ett delvis-hemma-företag – men nu har jag några andra planerade mastodontprojekt på gång också). Det är ett beundransvärt projekt av Niclas, och hans bloggar hör till dem jag hade velat länka, tipsa om minst fem läsvärda inlägg i, och berätta varför. Liksom många andra bloggar, sådär en tio, femton, tjugo, trettio stycken … Som har olika inriktningar och innehåll, som kan intressera olika typer av läsare. Så att några tidigare skrivna, fantastiska inlägg får beröra flera.

Just för att det inspirerar.

Ibland älskar jag realtidstanken, att så mycket är tillgängligt nästan i den sekund det händer. Ibland stör det mig att saker så snabbt försvinner, blir gamla och räknas ut, i webbens stora floder och hav av inlägg. De finns ju kvar, men de är svårare att hitta till. Det är svårare att skriva något genomarbetat, därför att intresset för en viss fråga har redan börjat falna när frågan precis är ställd. Samtidigt vet jag att det ju är upp till mig och vilket fokus jag vill ha. Jag vill inte nödvändigtvis söka och skriva dags- eller minutfärska saker. Jag vill lära och leva för livet. Jag blir glad när någon tittar in här via google-sök och läser gamla inlägg.

Jag skulle vilja göra samma sak med böcker, referera delar av dem jag läser, tala om varför det är bra, vad som berikar mitt liv och mina tankar ur dem. Men det är så mycket. Så många olika kategorier och ämnen. För mig blir det så olika, vad jag vill säga, beroende på vem jag skriver för.

Och så var det ju det här med att skriva rakt ut. Rakt ut i luften … När jag började jobba med min företagswebbsajt igen, då kände jag att det var så skönt att ha en inriktning, en egen målgrupp att tänka på, ett syfte och behov och en hel mängd saker som jag själv med bestämdhet vet “hör dit”. Det var skönt att avgränsa sig, och det blev ändå mycket, mycket, mycket (och mycket finns kvar att lägga ut).

När jag skriver i min Frizon känner jag just nu inte vem jag skriver för. Mig själv? Ja, men vad är då skillnaden mot allt jag skriver och lägger i mina planmappar, spar i mitt fotoalbum och i mina länksamlingar? Alla? Ja, men hur gör jag då för att vara specifik och intressant?

Skriva familjegrejor? Jag gillar verkligen att läsa flera föräldrabloggar, för de får mig att känna igen mig, och att värdesätta små saker och kommentarer som jag annars kanske inte skulle ha tänkt på. Men i valet mellan att skriva texter för mitt företag medan jag skriver texter, eller att skriva om barnen medan jag skriver texter, så blir det nog faktiskt så att jag skriver om företaget och lever med barnen. Igen. Även om det finns mycket som är kul att uppmärksamma. En del av mina tankar om att välja bort att skriva om barn och familjeliv är också att barnen börjar bli så stora att de och deras kompisar snart kan läsa nu, och då känns det viktigt att respektera deras digitala integritet.

Särskilt svårt att blogga visade det sig vara när det gäller idéskrivande. För barnboksidéer, poesi, skrivgruppen och andra skrivprojekt – som jag trodde att det skulle vara inspirerande att lägga ut så att de kan nå andras ögon – har jag insett att det är tvärtom med. Det är en introvert verksamhet för mig, och måste fortsätta att så vara. Om dem skriver jag i anteckningsböcker, på baksidan av kuvert och räkningar, rader upp och rader ner, rader på små blad som jag har lagt bredvid sängen och skriver dit stödord på när jag vaknar mitt i natten … När jag justerar och arbetar i dessa texter känns de som ARBETE, och de ska få kännas som arbete, de är inte i sig INSPIRATION för mig (möjligen ganska ofta INSPIRERAT ARBETE).

Inspirationen ska vara fri. Inspirationen ska kunna delas. Inspirationen kommer ofta från områden som ligger strax utanför vardagsverkligheten. Om skrivande i både arbetsuppdrag och fantasi är min vardagsverklighet, så kommer det antagligen att ligga helt andra saker här. Exakt vad är jag inte säker på. Men efter att ha känt på det ett tag, medan jag skrev det här inlägget, så är jag ganska övertygad om att det på olika sätt ändå kommer att handla om inspiration.

Skriva om hjärnan verkar ha en målgrupp. Hjärnor intresserar mig – hur människor tar in intryck, bearbetar dem, lär in vissa saker och utesluter andra. Hur vi påverkas av språk eller kontext (som situation, miljö, sammanhang och grupper). Allt från forskning till rolig amatörpsykologi. De flesta inlägg som har råkat handla om hjärna och personlighet på ett eller annat sätt har fått väldigt många läsare. Jag kan rekommendera Richard Wisemans blogg om hjärnans och perceptionens mysterier, den är läsvärd. Men jag tänker inte börja skriva särskilt mycket om hjärnan, för då blir det så mycket ytterligare att sätta sig in i, och ska jag göra något så vill jag göra det på riktigt … Mina ämnen på riktigt handlar om kommunikation och skrivande för att påverka – vilket blir på Trotsig.se.

Skriva om entreprenörskap vore roligt någon gång, för jag gillar verkligen idéförverkligande. Jag föreläser ibland om entreprenörskap och jag är helt för att stödja och stärka den där viljan att försöka, som gör att nya saker blir till. Jag bloggade ett tag på UngDesign.se om personligt entreprenörskap och kanske tar jag på mig något liknande igen. I något uppdrag för någon kund, har varit i kontakt med några stycken om behov.

Men det blir inte här. Om det blir något här, så blir det fri inspiration. Vi får helt enkelt se. Fritt. Frizon. Friiii ….

What do an acclaimed jazz pianist, a death metal vocalist and a five piece band have in common?  The answer is, not surprisingly, Tom Waits.  Seven Norwegian musicians from Trondheim’s metal, rock and jazz scenes have come together to form the traveling show titled “Earth Died Screaming (while I lay dreaming of Tom)”, a tribute to Tom Waits.  What comes from this union of Trondheim’s various music communities is an experience that is truly greater than the sum of its parts.  The single disappointment: that the group is sticking to Norway (as far as Years For Beards knows).

When I first heard about the show, I became immediately excited, and then immediately wary.  I continued to waver between hope and skepticism up until the minute the show – put together by the Bø jazzklubb – started on the sixteenth of October, 2009.  The small stage at Grillen (“The Grill”, a pub in Bø, Telemark, Norway) was a mess of instruments.  There was even one man whose sole task was sitting on the floor playing with a pile of percussion instruments around him.  The band began clapping and stomping layered rhythms, leading into an amazing rendition of – what else? – “Clap Hands”.  Every moment a new instrument or voice joined in was a new surprise.

Marita Røstad (vocals, piano) was amazing, and she is known in the area for her solo jazz album and performances.  The main band – consisting of Stian Omenås (trumpet), Daniel Elide (drums), Kurt Sprenger (electric guitar), Magnus Mortensen (contrabass) and Allesandro Elide (percussion) – was amazing.  Each and every one knew their parts and their instruments inside and out.  Of course, what you are undoubtedly most curious about is the part played by Stian Leknes, the man singing most of the Tom Waits lines.  Would he sing in his own voice?  Would he sound like an idiot trying to imitate Tom Waits’ decided growl?  Any doubts about a Tom Waits cover band’s legitimacy were instantly put to rest the moment Stian Leknes opened his mouth.

Leknes, who serves as the vocalist in Trondheim-based metal band Manifest, found the perfect balance between emulation and tastefulness.  His experience screaming in a metal band has most certainly prepared him for the part.  At times, Leknes sounded just like Waits, but never in a bad way.  It was easy to tell that Leknes was singing with a very natural voice, and not forcing the Tom Waits style too much.  Never once did it seem overdone or out of place.

The band played two sets with a short intermission in the middle of the night, so there were more Tom Waits songs than I could list.  Despite the long list of Waits pieces, none of them felt rushed.  Every song was carefully tailored to the band’s strengths, and it was easy to see that the band is passionate about both the work of Tom Waits and the show they are traveling with.  I am a huge Tom Waits fan (and he ranks in my top three artists of all time, easily), but what I am about to say may be blasphemy, so brace yourself.  Though most pieces were really wonderfully made, some songs actually came close to sounding better than the originals.  Any fan will, of course, always prefer Mr. Waits’ original compositions.  But it must be said that the band’s versions of songs like “Singapore”, “Clap Hands”, “Rain Dogs” and the titular “Earth Died Screaming” were simply breath-taking.  The band took already amazing pieces created by one of the best artists alive today and turned them into ten minute jazzy noise-rock epics.  And for that, I must give this band a ton of credit.  Their final piece was the song the show is named after, and it was the most fitting end to a show I have seen in a long time.  It was during this finale that the normal bar patrons – who had earlier been rudely yapping away – finally had no choice but to remain quiet and listen.

Besides the fact that the show was a full night of surprisingly high-quality entertainment, it was the cheapest show I have seen during my time here in Norway.  The shows I have seen advertised thus far in Norway have often ranged between $35 and $80 per ticket, whereas this show cost just over $15 (100 NOK).  Definitely a great deal, and hopefully this is an indication of the ticket price at other stops on the tour.

It is hard to find information about this traveling show online, but there is some basic tour date information available with a little searching.  If you are lucky enough to live in Norway, I highly recommend you check out “Earth Died Screaming (while I lay dreaming of Tom)” at your earliest convenience.  It is hard to say how long this band will be traveling, but it would be a shame if they did not remain together as a band after the tour is over.  Judging by their individual talents and accolades, one would hope that the band could write some quality, original material.

I am grateful. Grateful for all I have. I believe I am grateful, yet I am I grateful enough?  Are you?  We are always happy when our requests manifest.  Are you happy when your prayers are not answered?  We are told, “You can’t always get what you want.”   Why not?  What is the true problem of our desires being met?  A major stumbling block is our inability to embrace the silence of prayer and the silence of the wait,  thrusting us to a mind-set of  frustration.  We feel our requests are reasonable, therefore why are our requests not met? Often we do not accept the time required for our life to unfold, as we have so methodically planned.  Are you grateful for the waiting time?  Are you grateful for the outcome regardless of the reply from the heavens?

Everything happens for a reason.  Our desires can be met in due time with modifications depending on our best interest.  You know the saying, “Be careful what you wish for!!!”  To live in gratitude, accept your responsibility for your current life and change your mind-set. Undesired situations come with lessons, and eventually, tangible blessings.  Embrace the blessings of your obstacles before they arrive. Look at your current life and see your blessings.  Blessings increase with the opening of your heart and your heart is your connection to a gratitude based life.

May your life be blessed and may you pass life’s tests.

La veu de les dones ha estat negada, infantilitzada, invisibilitzada al llarg dels temps i aquest fet s ́ha constituït com una forma de violència estructural i activa que actualment es fa molt evident des de diferents àmbits, malgrat el treball i les reivindicacions de les dones per fer-se escoltar.

Una de les violències que patim les dones és la falta de credibilitat entorn al que diem. Aquesta manca de credibilitat la podem veure quan es posen en entredit les diferents situacions abusives que pateixen les dones i les nenes arreu del món. Posar en dubte les experiències de les dones de totes les edats i condicions en relació a les vivències de la violència, no és exclusiu dels àmbits institucionals, sinó que forma part de la societat en general.

Aquesta desconfiança fa que les dones hagin de passar per exàmens psicològics, psiquiàtrics, jurídics i psicosocials per a ser cregudes. Aquests exàmens els fan sovint professionals que no tenen una formació especialitzada en violència, però que es consideren necessaris per tal de validar la seva paraula.

Un exemple de falta de credibilitat cap a les dones és el mite sobre les denúncies falses per violència masclista en les relacions de parella que s’utilitzen per desacreditar i atacar a moltes dones a la vegada que per negar la dimensió d’aquesta violència.
Actualment un estudi del Consejo General del Poder Judicial ha posat de manifest que només una de cada 530 resolucions analitzades es refereix a una denúncia falsa. Les nenes i nens que comencen a parlar d’abusos viscuts dins la seva família sovint tampoc no són cregudes, se’ls tortura amb peritatges, se’ls qüestiona si no hi ha indicis físics evidents dels abusos. Se’ls estigmatitza quan els recursos i els àmbits judicials no saben o no volen identificar el seu relat.

La credibilitat de les dones es posa en qüestió a través de diferents mecanismes, com el tracte mediàtic que sol representar imatges estereotipades i sovint negatives per a les dones. Parlem, per exemple, del tracte mediàtic donat a les treballadores sexuals, on s’utilitza la seva imatge i/o el seu cos, però es nega i invisibilitza la seva veu fent d’aquesta imatge simple mercaderia sense emfatitzar en l’opinió, que, com a afectades, haurien de poder donar.

Es així que la credibilitat de les dones passa pel filtre patriarcal que ha de donar legitimitat al que diu la dona (denúncia, peritatge, forense…). Aquest filtre està agafant molt de poder a mesura que hi ha una més gran professionalització, sense una perspectiva feminista i de gènere. En aquests àmbits les dones no tenim credibilitat perquè no som reconegudes ja que passem a ser un mer expedient i no s’escolta la nostra veu.

Cal tornar a situar la dimensió social de la violència contra les dones i per tant la responsabilitat dels diferents àmbits. Cal també tornar a insistir en la necessitat d’exigir la responsabilitat social a qui maltracta. Cal tornar a posar al centre de la qüestió que les violències contra les dones són un fet estructural i que cal una implicació de tota la societat en general per a acabar amb aquestes. Cal mantenir i donar força a les xarxes i les relacions que creem entre les dones, que ens autoritzen i ens donen credibilitat.

Donem força al nostre dir, diem SI:

• a la paraula de les dones i les nenes
• al discurs i a les pràctiques feministes que, arreu del món, posen en el centre el caràcter estructural de la violència masclista
• al treball fet pels grups i xarxes de dones, creant solidaritats i enfortint el moviment feminista
• a l’acció política i al debat cultural que apunti als canvis estructurals i culturals necessaris per a prevenir la violència masclista
• als drets de les dones a poder decidir sobre el seu cos, la seva sexualitat i la seva vida
• als debats sobre noves masculinitats i a la presa de consciència social sobre aquest tema

Tornem a dir NO:

• als assassinats de dones pel sol fet de ser dones, els feminicidis
• al dubte sistemàtic sobre la paraula de les dones i les nenes
• als discursos biologicistes i psicologicistes que oculten el component social i estructural de la violència masclista
• a la judicalització com gairebé única resposta des dels poders públics a la violència masclista
• a la victimització i estigmatització de les dones que pateixen violència
• al model de masculinitat dominant
• a la impunitat dels maltractadors
• a les estructures i a la cultura patriarcal que oprimeixen i inferioritzen a les dones
• a la desligitimació del discurs feminista

For almost a year now, and even further back possibly, I have been fascinated with politics and punditry. I have become a self-proclaimed politico and I follow politics and media pretty closely, as closely as my tenuous hold on sanity will allow. In following politics my liberal mind has always been perplexed by the conservative party line of ‘returning to traditional American values’ and trying to recapture the ‘lost spirit of what it is to be an American’. In recent months it as been the loud ram’s horn call of Glenn Beck, and his ever growing audacity matched only by his ever growing audience, that has caused me to pontificate further on this subject. For the past few weeks this idea of lost values and traditional American fundamentals has led me to research where we might have gone wrong. Is there a specific time and place, a particular era that the GOP and other right-leaning hard-liners would want us to return to? If I can put my finger on the ethos that these guiding principles existed in, can we get back there? I delve in to this quagmire of American history to try and find “Glenn’s America”, so that he and others can stop preaching in general broad strokes and say, “we need to get back to what we believed in 19XX (or 18XX as it may be).”

When examining the general party ideas of what I understand to be the GOP’s fundamental idealogical structure I take my understanding from some 25 years on this planet, though you can’t count the first 16. I think that until you turn 17 and start trying to find yourself and begin to shape your views and identity in preparation for voting and contributing to society you are more of a blank slate in terms of personal free thought; up until this point you do not question a source but only try to fit in to the general parameters of ‘normal’ life as to not rock the boat and interfere with the indoctrination that American public schools instill in our youth. My true views have been shaped in my most recent years and as such I have adopted a view of the world quite different from my parents’, a direct result of informing myself for the first time in my life. In my home growing up as a small boy liberal leaders and democratic ideals warranted venom and crass, lewd criticism. The views I set forth will be of my own creation, independent of those I was raised on, either despite or in spite of them, I cannot tell. A crazy person isn’t crazy if he knows he’s crazy. Indeed.

The GOP seems to feel that gays should not marry, and are sinful. This makes no sense to me as sinful is a religious idea, not a political one; though it seems one position is quite often the result of the other. Gun rights should be protected at all costs to personal safety and public responsibility. Abortion is a no-no, ‘nuff said. They want smaller government, tax cuts, reform to let states decide things, though not gay marriage rights or any of the other items I just mentioned. They are for fiscal responsibility. GOP feels that a free market should regulate itself, again smaller government. They claim to fight for the middle class but public programs and universal anything is bad, that’s more government. They hate the environment as far as I can tell. Campaign finance reform (yeah right), education in America (no child left behind has gone so well after all). Prayer in school is ok, capital punishment and the death penalty are pretty much thumbs up, and the Ten Commandments should be at the steps of a courthouse flying the confederate flag. I am pretty close on this, right? So, basically it is a small government that has an abridged copy of the constitution, a cliff’s notes of the Bill of Rights, and a bible as it’s guiding principles. Hmmm, ok.

So, in American history, where can we find this utopia we strive for every day? This shangri-la we lost so long ago would obviously be the one saving grace for this country of godless sodomites. If we could only return to this point in time then everything would be fine. As far as I can tell it is the GOP that can save us if you believe the rhetoric. The liberals and the liberal media have scattered us across the nation and we are divided along partisan lines and are all doomed unless we jump on the Republican band wagon like some lifeboat after the Titanic sank. This is what self proclaimed “libertarian” Glenn Beck would like you to believe. I will give him credit for criticizing the government as a whole, even in the Bush days, though not in such inflammatory terms, but in reality he is like a Liber-publican. So, let’s take a step, Glenn, in to the way back machine and start a search for the time in American history you would like us to return to, as well as all of the Republican nay-sayers.

I want to start by saying that I am skipping the nineties completely being that he wasn’t happy with Clinton either, and it is far too close to the 21st century and the liberal progress this country has made; there is no way anyone wants to get back to how we were in the nineties, not even me and I loved my teen years in the nineties. And I am going to come back to the eighties later, they were too soon as well, but I will look at them briefly. We are sending our way back machine to a time when I think this country went bat-shit crazy and we were in maybe the most turmoil as a nation than anyone today can recall. I want to start out in the era that good old Glenn was born in, and that many of our current figure heads today, that make our decisions, can remember very ‘fondly’…the sixties.

Well I start here, in this decade of utter unrest by trying to illustrate that this can’t possibly be the America Glenn wants back. This cannot be the period in American history we want to recapture. This was a time that the late Strom Thurman must have hated with more zeal than any other period in history. It is hard to decide where to start. The sixties started out innocent enough, Kennedy beat Nixon and became the President, what followed was the Bay of Pigs incident, rumors about Marilyn, the meager beginning of Vietnam, the cuban missile crisis, then the man is assassinated. Further Vietnam BS, Malcolm X is killed, the Compton Cafeteria Riots in San Fran, then Nixon and all his Vietnam BS and his ‘secret plan to end the war’, the massive inflation crisis, MLK Jr. is killed, Bobby Kennedy is killed, the Stonewall riots of ’69, oh and a little thing who was named Manson did some killing. Great decade.

The sixties were a time of massive riots in the black and gay communities. Civil rights on all fronts tore the fabric of this country apart from women liberation, blacks, gays, even the Chicano revolution in this country. Outside of that was the acid wave of the sixties, a complete change in television, film, art, and especially music. The counterculture as it came to be known galvanized this country after the death of JFK, I think. The nice, homely manners of the 50’s were gone in a big way and now came very free thinkers, revolutionaries, protests exploded, demonstrations, inflation choked the middle class as they tried to compete with the changes in the landscape. The sixties were an ugly, hate-filled time, the emerging civil rights movement after the death of JFK was really the catalyst for it all. There is no way we want to return to the sixties as a country. America was in a violent turmoil and unsure of it’s identity and where the road we were on was going to lead us and people were strung out or scared for their lives, or both. I don’t think Glenn wants that back, so let’s move on.

How about we take a step forward and find Glenn in the seventies as a small boy, maybe these are the innocent and moral times he wants back…but I doubt it. Well in the seventies music really got good including the first ‘rap’ song, movies got weird, TV got lewd, and the country just got fucked up worse. This country started watching shows like All In The Family and the Brady bunch, dealing with some of the issues of the day. Vietnam choked the first few years while a little thing called Watergate slipped by the news press during Nixon’s re-election campaign and then killed him by ’74. It was the most embarrassing and shocking scandal in American political history, which in my opinion was the death of politics. I think that Nixon and his escalation of the doomed Vietnam war and his scandal killed the American political system. Outside of the US revolution was abundant across the world. Woodstock was a shining beacon of what drugs and music and mud can do for young people, a complete change from how we started the decade on the campus of Kent State where the National Guard gunned down peaceful protestors of the war on a college campus; unthinkable today, one would hope. The draft was the height of outrage, an unbelievable moment when Ali fought the draft and Elvis went in. Protest and anti-war sentiment was as widespread in this country as pant legs were flared. The Cold War ramped up a bit and this country got really scared, really fast. Our involvement in a few revolutions and military coupes as well as an assassination or two was a continuation of poor foreign affairs decisions. The middle east started down the road to where we are today with Israel, Egypt, Syria, the Soviet Union, and Afghanistan, all starting to kick each others asses.

The seventies brought women’s rights to the forefront as the sixties had civil rights for minorities eclipsing women’s rights to some extent. Vietnam ended finally, well our involvement, leaving the North to just wait for us to leave and drop Saigon to it’s knees and claim the country unified again. A sad end to a war we should have not been in and an end that was mostly our fault. Oh and lest I forget the massive recession we were in mixed with oil crises a couple of times resulting in rationing and further middle class stresses that included a very high unemployment rate. Then of course there was Jonestown, about 900 dead there. Idi Amin started his tyrannical, violent rule of Uganda as well. Is this the era we should return to? Hatred, war, violence, and tragedy pock marked this era. The seventies hold within their years scandal, racism, and fear-mongering, of the most epic scale one can imagine. There is no way we want to return to the moral or political views of this era. The seventies were the time for change for sure, but it came at great expense on the heels of a decade of radical change and upheaval. The 70’s continued the massive crime rate spikes that the sixties brought and the country still sat on the edge of it’s seat every day as nothing seemed to get better. Surely we don’t want the seventies back.

Ok, the eighties might be better, the days of Reagan and Bush, this might be the most likely time we want to return to. The eighties would be the most formidable years of Beck’s life; the decade of excess. The eighties brought the yuppie, and with it, all the coke, parties, and BMW’s we could handle. We saw great multinational growth and wall street was glamorous, they were kings then, still total scum, but they had better PR people then. Of course Reagan declared a War on Drugs, the Cold War raged to a massive scale. Sure, communism fell apart as did the Berlin Wall, but we saw the further mishandling of the middle east that is the source of our problems and involvement there today, can’t argue with that. Reagan put a major black eye on his presidency with the discovery of the Iran-Contra debacle that Oliver North was the mastermind behind. This country saw massive economic growth against the backdrop of very complicated and protracted battles all over the world including Asia, the middle east, central and south america, and ever Ireland with ‘the troubles’ brewing. (Only badass Irish would call a modern, religious civil war ‘the troubles’, an understatement to say the least)

The eighties, I think were a time of thinking that we could not be beaten, being the short attention span of Americans forgetting the seventies. We were coked out of our minds, living beyond our means, and we were kicking Commie ass. But the eighties, world wide, were complicated, painful growth, some democratic, but on the whole we saw massive famine and destruction abroad as the industrialized countries were making head way. The middle class of nations was being evaporated as the gap between rich and poor nations grew drastically. Domestic issues were tough though, as it seemed we were trying to use our power for good as a people with things like LiveAid and becoming more aware of issues in Africa and other countries, the eighties saw the rise of the religious right. They really got fired up on the gay issue and the discovery of AIDS, ‘the gay plague’. This country grew in many way, a decent decade I guess, I don’t really remember much of it but it seemed like a lot of people were having a lot of fun, safer fun.

Glenn probably liked the eighties, he used to be a liberal and an alcoholic, he draws a fine parallel between the two in a Katie Couric interview you should look up on YouTube, and this might have been his favorite time. Old enough to enjoy and understand it, he probably had a great time. Conservatives in power, strides made internationally, excess and money everywhere. The eighties were a wild party time, a decade that seemed to be a release of the past twenty years of hard work, growing pains, and controversial conflict. The 60’s and 70’s were going to lead inevitably to a time when we finally just cut loose and took a deep breath after so much bloodshed, upheaval, and serious talk. It was the decade we all remembered fondly on VH1. Music was weird, movies were great, TV was filled with classics we all watched, and standup comedians were making it big; the country was having a good laugh, a bump, and some beer. Not too bad.

I discount the nineties entirely so let’s jump back to a more general era I don’t think we can reasonably go back to, the 50’s to the 30’s. This was another era of massive wars, depression, civil rights injustice, bigotry, no women’s liberation, industrialization, organized crime, et al. These were times when blacks were openly hung from gallows, women were expected to be barefoot and pregnant in front of the stove, except when they were making tanks for the troops overseas for next to nothing wages. A time where minorities were rightfully scared at night of police or white boys out for a joyride. The prohibition, crime in the streets, Bonnie and Clyde, the Tommy gun, the B.A.R., saloons, speakeasy’s, and rampant bank robberies and crooked cops on the beat. This was a different time for this country and I don’t think we can agree with many of the ideals that were held to in this time and apply it today, the role of women alone is too much inequality to bare, let alone the rest.

OK, let’s take a big jump to my favorite era, the old west. You know the times, I’m talking post manifest destiny, pre-FBI. A time of no gun laws, showdowns in the streets, legal prostitutes, and riding in to town on a horse. Tombstone, San Francisco, Indian and cowboys. A time where gold was rushing and crazy white drunks ran amok and contracted TB and polio. Yes, when there were still a few Indians around, you had ranchers with thousands of acres, cattle drives, train robberies, and the men of storied legend lived and died by Winchester, Colt, and Smith&Wesson. I like to think I lived in the times with a town sheriff, shitty beer, floozies, and general martial law over most of the country. A time where you could shoot a man in the street in broad daylight in front of 50 people, and they might actually clap and then go about their day. The good times.

I think this might not be far enough back though. When I hear Glenn speak, he talks about the founding father’s principles. The true foundation of the country as he sees it with the men who earned America through blood, sweat, and tears. Jefferson’s America. OK, well let’s first examine the fact that we are talking late 1700’s and early 1800’s. These are pre-electric, pre-phone times. We are talking Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere, plantations, etc. If this is the time Glenn thinks we need to get back to I want to highlight a couple of things. First off, slavery was alive and well…need I say more? Secondly, this country treated women like shit, there were no civil rights, and it was unindustrialized. This country was populated and run by rich, white land owners, and then there was everybody else. I don’t want anyone to romanticize this era. This country was created, founded, and declared on the bodies of millions of natives and the death and suffering of minority races of people removed from their homes and treated worse than dogs in the time period.

America has never been truly righteous. We revolted for selfish reasons, nothing simpler than that. We turned against the imperialism of the Queen and her rule and declared our independence; the worst “dear John” letter ever. Up to that point we had slaughtered, tricked, infected, raped, and pillaged our way to the Mississippi and thought very highly of white skin and could kill a black man for any reason at any time, or sell them, whatever struck our fancy. What I am about to say is going to piss off the right, but if I could meet George Washington I think I would take the opportunity to shake his hand and then slap the wooden teeth out of his head. These were racist white bigots with an knack for the written word and hard on for ‘freedom’ by their definition as it applied to them as an emerging nation of first class citizens at the top of the shit pile. All due respect, but their ideas and principles were fundamentally offensive and their beliefs of equality were for themselves and those they agreed with. How many minorities or women were running around enjoying their freedom of speech or right to bare arms…or even read? I rest my case.

So maybe Glenn does have a time in mind. Maybe he wants the scandalous, violent 70’s, or the civil unrest and inequality of the 60’s. The old west certainly had smaller/non-existent national government, and the 40’s sure were good times to be a gangster, Nixon would have done well, that’s for sure. The eighties surely had the best coke, and some unprecedented growth, outside of post-industrialized America (without all of these pesky labor laws we got). Maybe he wants the great depression era, maybe to live amongst the greatest generation, or rub elbows with white men who raped their slaves on their plantation as a matter of principle and patriotism. The history of America is short, embarrassing, and seemingly without a lesson learned throughout. Glenn, I dare you and your constituents to point out that shining beacon in American history that is so much better than now, ‘cause I must have missed it. All those moments have led up to now, and I’ll be damned if where we are isn’t a hell of a lot better than where we were; you can pry this progress from my cold dead hands, pal.

Recently one of my few friends from my childhood took his own life. We used to be friends but we had not talked in about 7 years. As we, both attended different high schools.  I was not particularly close with him or anyone until I went to high school. 

I do not remember him being depressed in middle school. Nevertheless, he could have been, as I do not remember much of anything.

I think many people are never seen as depressed because it may manifest itself differently in some. I know that childhood depression looks different that adult depression. I think when you’re in a high school your at that awkward stage and depression can be manifested with childlike symptoms.

During high school, a few of my classmates committed suicide. I always never really thought I felt any feelings about it. However, when everyone was talking about how much their suicide must have hurt their families, I had different feeling about that.

I always was jealous of the person that took their own life, as they finally were free. They did not have to living a life of hurt, sadness and pain. They did not have to hide their depression from everyone.

I went to a catholic school from when I started school formal school in 4^th grade. I never thought about suicide as a bad thing, but I never saw it as good. Suicide was always just indifferent to me.

I feel like I hide many feelings and I try to minimize my abuse. When I was twelve, I attempted suicide and I did not plan it. I was just something that I somehow already knew how to do…I really never understood it.

 My parents knew that I had tried to commit suicide but they did nothing to help me. The same thing happened in 6^th grade when they were told I was self-harming. They “talked the talk” to the school counselor and pretended to care.

I think that some parents might really care about what other people think of them. In addition, they may view getting help as something ugly. I think what is ugly is that sometimes people that are really hurting never get the help that they truly disserve and need.

Anyone who feels suicidal please seek professional help. Your life is worth it.

Breaking news uit Katwijk!!

Eigenlijk wilde ik in deze post ingaan op de Eindhovense derby WVVZ – ESV, maar dat is van later zorg. Omdat ik zo juist iets las wat elke liefhebber van amateurderby’s zal interesseren.

Aanstaande zondag staat de derby van katwijk, Quick Boys tegen Katwijk, weer op het programma. Omdat het de laatste jaren regelmatig op ongeregeldheden uit is gelopen bij deze wedstrijd wil de gemeente daar nu verandering in aanbrengen.

Daarom is er afgelopen donderdag een manifest ondertekend door de aanvoerders van de elftallen, de supportersverenigingen, de voorzitters van beide clubs, de politie en natuurlijk de gemeente. Het manifest roept alle bezoekers op om er voor te zorgen dat de derby weer leuk, gezellig en spectaculair op de goede manier wordt.

Ondertussen houdt burgemeester Jos Wienen van Katwijk ook nog een scenario achter de hand voor het geval het toch mis dreigt te gaan. “Het is een mogelijkheid dat we groepen mensen die naar de wedstrijd willen gaan buiten sluiten, dat je zegt; die mogen de gemeente niet eens in. Daar kan ik een noodverordening voor maken. Zo ver het mogelijk is sluit je dan het dorp af voor mensen die uit kunnen zijn op rellen. Maar de inzet is wel om er gezamenlijk voor te zorgen dat die mensen denken; in Katwijk hebben we niks te zoeken”, verklaart Wienen. Opvallend is dat veel relschoppers uit andere plaatsen komen. “Die komen hier absoluut niet voor het voetbal, soms gaan ze er zelfs niet eens naar toe. Maar zij zorgen wel voor  veel overlast.”
