Radiohead tried this this with “In Rainbows” and made a killing, largely because a few people, like Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, dropped large sums of money in the donation bucket, but I bet it’s different when running a small cafe. Anyway I think this is a wonderful, generous idea. As they say it, “Instead of a cash register, a donation box is available for one to pay what they felt their meal was worth, or to leave a little more and help out someone less fortunate. If a diner does not have sufficient money to leave, they are encouraged to exchange an hour of service.”

I heard this on the radio today, maybe this is my “National Day of Listening” deed. Anyway, check it out, and if you’re in Denver give it a whirl, I’ll be headed there as soon as I can, as soon as I can spare an hour or leave a fair donation.

Are there other places out there working this way? People of the Internet, what do you know?

A book of poems would probably fail within this model.

There will be a general election in 2010, and although nobody knows exactly when it will be – with the possible exception of Gordon Brown – the strongest speculation is that it will be held on May 6.

Whenever it is called, we are planning a campaign to Make MND Matter at the election, and engage politicians so that services for people with MND continue to be safeguarded and improved. Specifically, we are using our election manifesto to ask for a National Strategy for MND, to address the current situation, in which there is no official guidance on caring for people with MND.

We believe that a National Strategy will be the best way to ensure that high quality care can be reliably accessed by people with MND, and also to ensure that research into MND continues to thrive.

MND Association branches and groups will be able to help with this campaign, for example by writing to their current MPs, as well as their local candidates. We are already asking MPs to sign a motion in the House of Commons in support of a National Strategy – there are more details on our website.

The main Association website also has full details of the manifesto. Be sure to check back here for more information on this campaign as we approach the election.

Synes specielt pointen “it’s easier to react that to create” er meget sigende.

1. A designer does not have the luxury of cynicism.
So sayeth Mau, adding that designers must never be cool and detached skeptics, but instead must be willing to be laughed at—willing to take the occasional pratfall in pursuit of grand and crazy dreams. “A cynical designer,” Mau adds, “is a joke.”

2. It is easier to react than to create.
This is Sagmeister’s rejoinder to all who complain about being so busy with emails, tweets, and meetings. “Within that complaint is an excuse,” he says, pointing out that most of us would rather answer another email than face the blank page.

3. You must keep moving away from what you know.
Mau’s advice on how to become a more cross-disciplinary designer in a world that demands T-shaped problem-solvers Also, he notes, it’s a good way to avoid resting on your laurels.

4. A designer’s gotta have the guts to be truthful at all times.
In case you couldn’t tell, that’s George Lois talking about how the designer must be the one person in the room who is always willing to call bullshit. Even, Lois adds, “while everyone else is nodding their heads.”

5. People don’t fund problems, they fund solutions.
Cameron Sinclair, the founder of Architecture for Humanity, says that if you want to raise support to tackle the world’s problems, you must first design potential solutions—and make them visible to people, even if only in sketches.

6. Many believe the world just is. Designers believe we can make the world be.
This observation from Jane Fulton Suri, a pioneer in bringing psychology to design, suggests that designers actually perceive reality differently from everyone else. And that maybe designers are a little crazy—but if so, it’s a kind of crazy the world needs right now.

7. It can be helpful to think about an idea from a point of view that makes no sense.
This is Sagmeister again, talking about how to be original at a time when it seems everything has been done already. Think laterally, says Stefan; look at the world around you sideways or upside down. To hell with logic.

8. Through the act of making things, we discover ideas.
IDEO’s Tim Brown, here talking about the power of prototyping to stimulate fresh thought. When just thinking isn’t good enough, try “thinkering.”

9. When you’re totally unqualified for a job, that’s when you do your best work.
I’m slightly paraphrasing Paula Scher, who actually said the above using the first person “I.” Scher’s point is that when you’re an inexperienced outsider on any project, you are unburdened by conventional wisdom and can see things that the insiders and “experts” can’t see.

10. The goal is to be an expert coming out, not going in.
Here Mau is making the case against too much upfront research. Go into a challenge a little bit blind and use the early stages for speculative thinking. There’s always time for research later.

11. To bring about real change, you have to kiss a lot of frogs.
Dean Kamen’s way of saying you must be willing to work your way through many sub-par ideas before you’ll get to transformational ones. Kamen, by the way, thinks that as a society we’ve lost our taste for frogs. “We’re not willing do the hard work and take the risks that are part of making progress.”

12. When the world isn’t working well, you have the makings of a great design project.
The final word, from Mau, which could also be put this way: There’s never been a better time to be a designer because there is so much in need of better design.

Siamo stanchi dell’alternatività forzata come fonte di ribellione all’ignoranza.

1. Extended Play, aka an EP, is a short album that’s less then 30 minutes. Way back in the day

1. Extended Play, aka an EP, is a short album that’s less then 30 minutes. Way back in the day, in the age of vinyl, an EP was something bands sometimes put out between albums – not really a stopgap, but a collection of stuff that didn’t really fit anywhere else (B-Sides, outtakes, live stuff, etc). They were usually short, punchy and right to the point.

2. A pop culture blog that hopes to capture the feel of the EP: not too long, but short and to the point. As Sum 41 once put it, All Killer, No Filler.

That’s what we are. We’re here to provide short and to-the-point reviews and opinion on music, TV and, well, whatever strikes our fancy. We’re not here to write 700-word opuses on how Radiohead has done it again or how Animal Collective is maybe the greatest thing ever (because they aren’t). We certainly don’t have that kind of time, and we fully expect you don’t.

3. We’re here to put things in context. One of our major problems with other critics is the dreaded respect factor: that the musicians worked so hard, that the label surely knows what they’re doing, that somebody somewhere is ahead of the curve in liking something… we’re not like that. Not to use a cliche, but we tell it straight. If we don’t like something, we’ll say so – unlike other places, where everything seems to get 3 stars or more, save for the easiest of easy targets. To use another cliche, that’s low hanging fruit. We don’t even eat fruit (here at EP, we’re more smoothie people).

4. So why should you care? Are you fed up with albums getting three stars on release and becoming albums of the year only months later? With albums getting perfect reviews and left of said lists? With tepid reviews or elaborate systems that need a decoder ring to figure out? We know the feeling. How is anybody supposed to take stuff like that seriously – and anyway, what IS the difference between 4 and a half and five? We’ll spare you the difference.

Welcome to Extended Play.

irreparabile che andava aumentando in me

prossimo

un popolo

un popolo di vecchi di grandi vecchi

che non trovi mai sui quotidiani

a meno che non siano ultra

centenari e svegli ancora in qualche modo belli

muti pallidissimi tenacemente fragilissimi

ed era manifesto in quei loro

lenti gesti sfocati appena accennati

noi

quella che aveva premuto me fino a quei confini

Q. What am I doing here? A. Taking that most simple and basic piece of writing advice: The only way

Q. What am I doing here?

A. Taking that most simple and basic piece of writing advice: The only way to become a writer is by writing.

I remember my first story typed out on my Granny’s IBM Selectric. I was about 10, the paper a bright shocking pink, and the story, I’m sure, terrible. Who could write a good story at 10? But even then, as I was typing away at my 13-page masterpiece, I could feel the burning desire to write.

I’d go on to write several short stories in the next five or six years. Most of them would just be a start. The first page or two, the kernel of an idea, or a scant piece of dialog. But I’d always return. The writing, the creating of whole universes from nothing more than ink and paper has a magic pull to the imaginative spark in so many. And I heard the call loud and clear through my teenage years.

But where is that shocking pink manuscript now? Buried, with a stack of other stories, in cardboard boxes, stacked (but not organized) in the basement. They are mixed in with the hundreds of books, the collections of role-playing supplies, the old school debris. Around those boxes are the packed toys and children’s clothes, Christmas decorations, the long unused keyboards, mice and other computer detritus.

And like the stories themselves, the clear call to write that was so close in my teenage years has, too, been buried under 20 years of life and living and growing up. Distractions pile up. At 16, girls and parties and friends. Later, it’s university. Then jobs and love and children. None of these took writing from me — I let writing pass me by.

But still the faint chimes call from time to time. When I read a good book or article or even just a well turned phrase, I wish I had written that. When I hear of people writing for a living, I wish I could do that. When I learn of the lottery-like success of J.K. Rowling or Stephanie Meyer or even Sarah Palin, I wish that it happened to me. Each wish is a tiny echo of the passion of my younger self.

And still, to this day, my thoughts on movies and business ideas and politics still often visit my imagination as writing. And I wonder, why aren’t I writing? The answer is universal among we unrealized authors. I’m not writing because I have been procrastinating for 20 years. I could always start tomorrow. Or next week. Or I’ll have more time next year.

So, here is my resolution: to write 500 words every day. Fiction, movie reviews, essays, screenplays, diaries. Anything goes. As long as it happens every day and as long as it’s at least 500 words.

I can’t promise it will be any good. With a daily deadline, it probably won’t even be proofread, let alone edited. But, hey, you get what you pay for.

So join me tomorrow, and every day, for 500 words from a mediocre writer trying to get better.

Self Introduction

Over looking the campus, while I’m writing this letter. Wonders who will read this, but hopeful that someone will.

My name is Moses Hng. It has been about three months since I have landed in this current job as a Student Affair and Alumni Executive after graduating from James Cook University. My job is basically pretty simple, besides taking care of some students – who are facing problems academically and referring some to counselling, mostly due to stress, I organise events for you, the Alumni of the School.

Haven’t never studied in the local university, i didn’t have the chance to be a part of a student group, stay in a hall or join any clubs. I felt like a “freshmen” when I first came to the University.

Purpose of writing / Currently

I am writing this because I want to be completely transparent with you, since my job is really about you. I believe that the Alumni and Students are a two groups of people with much talents and skills to do great things, and some of you have already done so.

You know, I have been thinking, we have the alumni office and association trying to keep in touch with you. To be totally frank with you, I ask myself everyday “What is the point of our job?”Are we only here to keep in touch, then what are we building ?

I think you might ask yourself too, “What is the point of keeping in touch with the School/University? I’ve paid my school fees, i don’t owe you anything”.

So, what’s the point? I think the point is, there must be more then this, we can build something bigger then us.

Organizing an event for alumni is fun and exciting, and i enjoyed organsing events for you. It makes me feel happy when i know you have enjoyed yourself Whether it’s a Function, Dinner, Seminar or an Outing.. as long as we have enough participation rate it can be done. It can become routine though.. After a while you get sick of coming, and we wonder what’s the point of having an event?

But participating in events are never the end of the matter.

Right now, we are in a very fortunate position. In our SCE family, we have a good population of Former students (Alumni, some of you in the Alumni Association, Current Students (Represented by School Computer Engineering club, CEC), and Professors.

The Vision

I have a vision of a vibrant, modern, creative SCE Community being led by professional and passionate alumni, who are interested in changing cultures, impacting the community with inventions and good ideas.

It will be lively, active, fun, taking initiative, leading the industry. Why can’t SCE have the Google-culture?

We have thousands of alumni graduate from the School, awards winning computer engineers in our midst. Many of us have good ideas but never do anything with them. If we can have a shared vision of how you want the Alumni relations to be run, and there is a tighter kited community, i believe we can achieve three things:

Technology-Innovation

Do we not have the technical skills among us to transform ideas into reality? Why does only MIT have to be the one doing it? Why can’t we do it? We don’t need many people, just a few committed individuals with bold ideas and initiative can make a difference in the status quo.

For better world

Looking further, and having a vision bigger then ourselves. The work we can do can be so much bigger, Can you imagine SCE Community involved in building schools in 3rd world country? Inventions to help people with disabilities?, Operate halfway houses for troubled youth? well, why not?

Changing your Alma Mater Culture

An Alumni Community committed enough can make a different in the University culture, and affect policies. In the states, Alumni sit in the university as board of trustees. Why not?

Call for action

So, If you feel the same as I do, that something has to be done.. and things need to be shaken up.. and believe that if we must form a tighter community to make a difference in our community. If you want “Alumni Relations” to be more then just Social Gatherings. Be involved.

What am i asking from you?

Your leadership, initiative, ideas, commitment and support.

Some of the ways you can be involved:

1) Be connected with us and within yourself, through facebook, twitter, blogs.

2) Discuss on the Vision, share with us on what kind of alumni community you want to build.

3) Volunteer to form groups to organize various projects, i.e Invention, Community Service, organizing events.

4) Are you willing to be more involve with what your Alma mater is doing in campus? (e.g Mentor, be a guest speaker to share your experience?)

Pitchforkmedia recently interviewed Kode9. They discussed his label Hyperdub, the state of constant hype and the use of unsound. Read interview (here)

Excerpt below;

Pitchfork: You spend a lot of time deconstructing the virus metaphor as applied to the ways music spreads and shifts. How have technological advances in transmission, both digital sharing and pirate radio, changed the ways that music mutates and becomes over-exposed? How has it changed the ways that new music from urban areas around the world– the global ghettotech– operates and evolves?

K9: Audio virology is not a metaphor. It is to be taken literally. It maps real processes of mutation, transmission, contagion and memory within music culture. Both analog and digital developments have intensified the viral nature of sonic culture. Because we live in a condition of ubiquitous music and media, and near infinite technological memory, it is much easier for local cultures to find an audience that resonates with their music, whether local or globally. At the same time the acceleration and saturation leads to things becoming outmoded, or out of fashion before they’ve even happened. That’s a pretty complicated situation. Hype becomes autonomous from its object and runs away with itself.

Pitchfork: A quote you reference says, “Our discos are preparing our youth for a retaliatory strike,” and you deconstruct the different ways that sound is used to control– armies dispersing crowds, marketers implanting sales pitches, and DJs unifying the dance floor through bass vibrations. With the hyper-niche culture of music and the ability to be constantly plugged in and bombarded with information, has sonic warfare become more of a constant state of being?

K9: The book runs on the real fiction that sonic warfare is our ambient normality, purring away in the background so that you don’t even notice it– that is what I call the politics of frequency.

The human species needs a dramatic change in its ways, the separation, the borders, the politics, th

The human species needs a dramatic change in its ways, the separation, the borders, the politics, the religions, all needs to be gone. Our very existence is amazingly unusual in the universe and we must not spend valuable time on issues that ultimately might lead to our destruction.

Looking back into history, there is only one reason for all wars, no matter how big or how small. It has always been the same from probably the moment the very first human fought the second to the First World War, down to the USA invading Iraq, all wars and quarrels were over a matter of simple control.

Control has had many different forms in our history, for example, the Roman Empire, which saw control in territory and the dominating of other peoples with its military, or Adolf Hitler, in search of his White Power, in a purist control, the Cold War, military control. Think of all the conflicts in the Middle East, shootings over borders, fighting over oil. ALL of those in search of control over some kind of thing.

Aside the dominance trait inherited by most male complex creatures, power has been that one thing for which most major conflicts since the industrial revolution, or maybe even further, were fought.

In the early days of mankind, any conflicts must have been for either farming or hunting grounds, in which civilization eventually formed, with technology at its beginning, more people meant more grounds in which to find or grow food. This pattern was more or less followed throughout history until more elaborate agriculture techniques came to be.

If the basic need for food is provided, mankind can survive, however, the search for ever growing amounts of control has taken us in a surch for its ultimate form: energy.

Society has extracted energy from nature since its dawn, either in the form of heat, electricity or explosions, energy is our most necessary commodity, our ultimate need. Humanity fights over energy, that would not happen if there was enough cheap power for all.

During the Second World War, Albert Einstein hypothesised that matter was made of energy. His Relativity Theory combined with others’ works made it possible for civilization to extract the energy not from objects, but from matter itself.

The power within atoms is incredible; however we can only use a very small portion of it to produce energy. The highly inefficient process that takes place in nuclear reactors around the world does not use the energy from the atom directly but a transformed form of the energy produced through nuclear decay.

Another way to use the power of nuclear reactions is the Sun. It gives the planet energy from fission for free in the form of heat and light, which allows for photosynthesis and is therefore responsible for life in this planet. All our power sources with the exception of geodesic heat come indirectly from the Sun. The power of the nucleus gives us life.

If the incredible amount of power in the nucleus can be harnessed through means more effective than those of a nuclear reactor, we would make war obsolete. With free power all but manual labor would have to be priced, factories would not pay the state for power, we would not waste areas in which food can be grown to dam rivers for power plants, fields can be digital now, our technology allows it. If there is energy for all, electronic goods would be cheaper, connectivity would be cheaper, we would not need to pay to learn, to share, to connect, to finally evolve.

With access to comprehensive information through our already established Internet, literacy rates go up and society is able to contribute and create as a whole. Continuing to waste money in war over non-renewable forms of energy will only make our short reserves burn out faster, but it will ultimately lead to extinction.

For now, we can maintain ourselves that way, but we will not be able to do that for much longer. If we could all live in peace, resources would be relocated to where they are needed, not only to look for this form of energy, but all kinds of research, all kinds of development, free power would redefine classes, it would redefine society.

We can continue to waste resources on fighting, or we can share, we can talk, we can improve science, we can improve life, we can improve humanity.

This manifest is not about a new energy form, it is about the search for it. Humanity has found its goal, its ultimate need. We need energy to evolve, we need energy to grow. The revolution here would not benefit one society, or governments or any movements, it would benefit us, the human species.

What is proposed here is an alternative: even though we are different, black, white, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latino, or Pagans, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, we are here together, one planet into a space we do not even understand.

Even creationists believe we have been created one: Sons of the same. The alternative here involves a leap of faith, abandoning all war now, putting down arms and joining in search of one common goal, to have more time. More time also to perpetuate and refine religious beliefs.

Human race evolved, differentiated, we have developed thought, abstraction. Our next step in evolution might be not as a new individual, but as a society: from one, to camp, to village, to city, to country, to planet. One complex species sharing a home we are at peace with.Violence has always been useless.

By focusing on one common global goal, with trust, we can set aside our differences completely for long enough to transcend, not in life, but in mind. One society.

Collaboration is the key to open the door of knowledge.

In society and peace lies the ability to understand.

Understanding is rational power, humanity’s power.

The one true power. The rest is History.

Share and Transcend.
