Following the relative success of the BBC’s attempt to film Wallander in English but in Sweden, I’ve been enjoying the original Swedish series on BBC 4 over the past year or so.

Inevitably, I was going to pick up a few of the books to read.

It so happened that a few crates of books arrived in the staff room at work (a colleague had died and they were donated to the school) and a couple of Wallanders were included. I read those and then ordered a couple more from Amazon.

I think I’m done with Wallander for now, having read (in no particular order):

Faceless Killers, The Dogs of Riga, The White Lioness, and One Step Behind. I also read his sole Linda Wallander novel, Before the Frost. You can read about them here on Mankell’s web site.

Those who have seen Wallander on TV will know that he is a melancholy individual, who is estranged from his ex-wife, and intermittently estranged from his own daughter. His health is not good, he drinks too much, but he generally operates like a policeman as opposed to a crazy maverick who makes up his own rules. That’s except when it’s time for one of his cases to be turned into a novel, at which point he tends to become a crazy maverick who makes up his own rules. Like Inspector Morse, he’s unlucky in love, and slightly pathetic when he tries to get lucky. He has a tendency to choose inappropriate partners and make a fool of himself.

The TV Wallander tends to be more of a team leader and a delegator. In print, he more often than not loses his head and gets himself into dangerous situations. In the end, I prefer the TV Wallander to the novel character, who basically needs a kick up the backside.

The first TV episode filmed in Sweden is actually based on Before the Frost, which is a different novel, as it’s told from the point of view of Linda, who is a much more sympathetic character. The TV series starts with Linda and then she’s in every episode (as a cop), whereas in the novel world, she is, in the main, a student with no clear sense of direction. Unfortunately, Johanna Sällström, who played Linda on Swedish TV, committed suicide, and I believe Mankell was so upset by this that he’s not planning to write any more Linda Wallander novels.

The most successful of the other novels are the shorter ones, which have a tight focus on one case, which is generally following a police procedural. I guess it’s supposed to be realistic, in that the police rarely have anything to go on, until some chance event helps put things into place. Apart from Before the Frost, I’d recommend One Step Behind, which was also filmed for TV, but which has other elements, on the page, which aren’t shown on TV.

The least enjoyable of the five I’ve read was The White Lioness, which is a sprawling, double-length book, set in both Sweden and South Africa. It’s a bit like one of those double albums that would be better as a single. Wallander completely loses it in this one, and you don’t quite get why, it’s just a massive existential crisis which sends him over the edge.

He frequently moans about the state Sweden has fallen into, and there seems to be an anti-immigration, isolationist agenda, with the sense that a lot of the new types of crime in Sweden are caused by incoming Poles, Russians, Latvians, etc. Wallander frequently bemoans the state of policing and security, and questions his role as a policeman. He’s always on the verge of quitting.

I’d cautiously recommend reading a couple of these, but probably best not to do what I did and read five in a row. One health warning is to consider that, if you read them in English, you are reading a translation, so some of my criticisms may be considered unfair.

Está jodido, el bueno de Kurt: elevados niveles de glucosa, colesterol, aparentes amagos de infarto, olvidos tontos (algunos no tanto), trajes que ya no utiliza para bodas o bautizos sino para funerales… No me extraña que, con todo esto, haya decidido abandonar su carrera policial.

Me refiero, claro, a la novela El hombre inquieto, la última entrega de Henning Mankell protagonizada por el inspector sueco que nos ha acompañado durante varios años.

Una novela que tiene sabor a despedida desde el principio, pues Mankell aprovecha para mostrarnos más la cara privada de Wallander -su relación con Linda, con su ex esposa Mona, con su ligue Baiba, con su fallecido padre, consigo mismo- que la pública, ya que la trama estrictamente policial se revela como algo previsible que se habría resuelto en, como máximo, la mitad de las páginas de que consta el libro.

Vamos, que un Wallander en plena forma habría resuelto el caso en un abrir y cerrar de ojos -incluso yo lo hice, detalle arriba detalle abajo, y no suelo ser demasiado perspicaz, al menos mientras leo-. Pero hay que perdonarle porque, como decía al principio, el bueno de Kurt está francamente malito.

Det är en deckare som handlar om övergrepp på ett barn! Kan vara ett sätt att få lite publicitet kanske. Min första bok verkar ha stannat av. Har inte sålt något hemifrån och har iofs inte kollat med förlaget heller.

Har läst mycket på senaste tiden. Igår läste jag nummer två i serien Släkten. Alltså en fristående fortsättning på Katarina Mazettis bok, denna skriven av en kvinnlig gynekologläkare. Det tog lite tid att sätta sig in i den men sedan blev den riktigt bra. Kanske lite korthuggen!

Idag har jag börjat på Henning Mankells senaste, den verkar än så länge bra!

Livet, ja det lunkar på. Barnbarnet är stabilt i sin sjukdom. Sonen mår bra och även jag tycker att det lunkar på i en bra takt nu.

Var rädda om varandra och kramas mycket

Gestern habe ich eine Terminserie löschen können: Von nun an wird es kein Klingeln jeden zweiten Donnerstag mehr geben, denn die Vermietungsgesellschaft hat bestätigt, ab sofort eine Reinigungsfirma den Flurdienst übernimmt. Endlich muss man nicht mehr morgens aus dem Haus schleichenvon Nachbarn erwischt zu werden, die den Eindruck haben, dass man da beim nächsten Mal etwas gründlicher arbeiten müsse.

Nachdem ich das Hörbuch noch einmal mit im Auto hatte, schwanke ich nun, welcher Charakter mir lieber ist: Kapitän Lars Tobiasson-Svartman, der Protagonist in Henning Mankells Tiefe, oder Leo Perutz’ Gestalt des Rittmeisters Gottfried Adalbert Freiherr von Yosch und Klettenfeld[1]. Beide sind gespalten und nicht ganz bei sich und bei beiden ist zumindest äußerlich mindestens eine Frau daran Schuld. Doch während der Erste seine Untaten mit Absicht begeht, sie plant und am Ende auf eine Art Verantwortung übernimmt, wird dem Rittmeister von seinem verwirrten Geist eine Logik vorgelegt, die ihm das eigene Handeln und das anderer immer wieder erklärt und damit legalisiert. In ihrer [gefühlten] Hilflosigkeit haben die Charaktere etwas gemeinsam.

Die Krimi- und Fantasy-Elemente des Meister des Jüngsten Tages machen das Buch unterhaltsam, während die skandinavische Kühle und Sprödigkeit Mankells Buch eine graue und manchmal unheimliche Stimmung gibt, ohne dass eigentlich etwas überraschendes geschieht, das Ende ist jedenfalls schon früh erkenntbar, es geht in erster Linie darum, den Weg das Charakters zu erkennen, der ihn dort hin führen wird.

Beide Romane sind jedenfalls lesens-/hörenswert

One of the advantages of the success of Henning Mankell’s detective novels is that it has led to the publication of many of his other, more literary, novels in English. Both tend to share an atmosphere of Scandinavian gloominess, but that can be a harder sell when there isn’t a murder to solve. Italian Shoes is no different: superficially a novel about old age and death. However, like much of Mankell’s work, it more about how we should live our lives than how we should end them.

The novel is narrated by Frederick Welin. Once a successful surgeon, he now lives alone (apart form a cat and a dog) on an island surrounded by a sea of ice. It isn’t difficult, then, to spot the first metaphor: he is a man who has deliberately isolated himself from the world, with no emotional ties. A rotting boat further suggests his isolation. Every morning he cuts a hole in the ice and plunges naked into it:

“Every day I jump down into my black hole in order to get the feeling that I’m still alive.”

He hasn’t, however, entirely given up on making a connection with the world beyond his island:

“I suppose, really, that there will be somebody out there one of these days, a black shadow against all the white…”

One day that “black figure, a silhouette, outlined against all the white” appears, a woman that he once loved, but abandoned many years before, leaving to study in America and never getting back in touch. This abandonment begins even before he reaches America as he the date of departure he gives Harriet is the day after he leaves. Harriet is dying, and the reason she gives for finally contacting Frederick after all this time is that she wants him to keep a promise he once made to her to take her to a pool in the forest before she dies. The first half of the novel is immured in death: before Harriet arrives, Frederick finds a dead seagull; on their journey a dog begins to follow their car and when they return it to its home they find its owner, an old woman, dead; in a café there is the skull of “an old bear that simply lay down by a log pile and died.” When they finally reach the pool, which is of course frozen over, Frederick falls through the ice and almost dies. The other theme, however, which has been running through their journey, is their growing closeness. Often this is a physical closeness, forced on them by the availability of only one bed, and here as Harriet must heat Frederick with her own body. Eventually she reveals the real reason for her visit by taking him to meet his daughter.

Frederick and Harriet’s daughter, Louise, is also a rather isolated figure, a middle-aged woman living alone in a caravan, spending her time writing protest letters to world leaders. Frederick finds these new relationships difficult and not all goes smoothly, but he does maintain a determination to make them work. We also discover one of the reasons for his self-imposed exile, an operation that went wrong when he amputated the wrong arm of a promising swimmer. It was not guilt that made him give up his profession, but a feeling of being unfairly blamed. His newly discovered family leads to him contacting the woman in question, Agnes, who now runs a foster home for damaged teenage girls. He is impressed by the way she seems to have her life under control; she talks of the hatred she once felt as an “all-consuming parasite. The girls are all that matter now.” When Harriet appeared, Frederick spoke of a door opening that he had thought close forever – he now feels as if:

“Every single door inside me was swinging back and forth in the wind, which seemed to be getting stronger all the time.”

At this point, the novel seems very much about one man’s redemption – and indeed it is. But that redemption is never certain or complete, Mankell is too subtle for that. Moments of community, where Frederick seems to be reconnecting with the world, like the summer solstice celebration arranged for Harriet, are balanced by breakdowns in empathy like Sima’s suicide and his clumsy attempts to seduce Agnes. It reminded me a little of J. M. Coetzee’s Disgrace, where an emotionally closed off man seeks to reconnect with only limited success. The titles of the four sections of the novel tell their own story: Ice, in the beginning when he is isolated; The Forest, when he seems lost amid all the changes; The Sea, when he attempts to connect with those around him; and finally, Winter Solstice, a year on from when Harriet appeared, when he is offered hope in his relationships with both Louise and Agnes. There is no dramatic change by the end, but there is change:

“It was just as Harriet had written. We had come this far.
“No further than that. But this far.”

He recibido el catálogo de Tusquets para el último trimestre del año y no puedo estar más feliz. Vuelven Haruki Murakami y Henning Mankell. En octubre, el detective Wallander regresa con ‘El hombre inquieto’, una oportunidad para descubrir o seguir disfrutando de la maravillosa prosa de Mankell. Y en noviembre, Murakami con ‘El fin del mundo y un cruel país de las maravillas’, a buen seguro otra historia llena de lirismo y sentimiento de este inigualable autor japonés. Y para aumentar la alegría, en breve nuevo libro de Georgette Heyer, la que fue considerada heredera de Jane Austen y que en España es publicada por Salamandra. No veo la hora de tener estos libros en mis manos!!

Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace)

Gisteravond heb ik hem dan eindelijk gezien: de film Mannen die vrouwen haten van regiseur Niels Arden Oplev, de verfilming van het eerste boek van Stieg Larsson. Naderhand realiseerde ik me dat ik 150 minuten non-stop gefascineerd naar het scherm heb zitten zitten kijken. Een goede vriend, die het boek niet gelezen had en samen met mij de film zag, had hetzelfde ervaren. We waren het eens: de acteurs en de beelden zijn werkelijk een lust voor het oog.

Het verhaal van het boek is voor de film sterk teruggebracht. Wat mij betreft zijn de juiste stukken eruit gesneden, al had ik die in het boek zeker niet willen missen. Mijn enige kritiek op de film is dat er ondanks het snijden toch teveel is overgebleven om in 150 minuten te laten zien. De haast die hiervoor nodig is gaat ten koste van de speciale sfeer van het boek en de diepgang van de karakters.

Misschien lijdt ik gewoon wel aan de klassieke desillusie van iemand die het boek eerst gelezen heeft. Toch denk ik dat de film nauwelijks beter gemaakt had kunnen worden. De kracht van Larssons verhalen is gewoon niet te vertalen naar een film. Die kracht betreft het zeer realistisch kunnen neerzetten van echte mensen. Larsson neemt daar in zijn boeken gewoon uitgebreid de tijd voor en dat vind ik nu juist zo geweldig. 

Maak niet de fout door eerst de film te bekijken. Eerst lezen en dan pas naar de bios. Met het boek in je achterhoofd vul je de leemtes in de film vanzelf in. En dan is hij dik genieten.

Mankell ma talent do tworzenia historii, których intryga stanowi ucztę, jakich mało można doświadczać w wakacyjny zastój wydawniczy.

Akcja jest niezwykle zagmatwana. W kwietniu 1992 roku w Republice Południowej Afryki grupa prawicowych fanatyków planuje zamach na Nelsona Mandelę i mozolnie budowaną demokrację. W tym samym czasie policja w Ystad przyjmuje zgłoszenie o zaginięciu agentki nieruchomości, Louse Akerblom.

Komisarz Wallander szybko dochodzi do wniosku, że kierowane przez niego śledztwo w tej sprawie nie będzie łatwe ani rutynowe (jak zwykle zresztą). Elementy układanki nie chcą się ze sobą połączyć. Trudności potęguje także znaleziony palec oraz problemy Wallandera.

Czy i tym razem komisarz da radę? Przecież wiadomo, że on Zawsze wychodził z każdej opresji zwycięsko. Tym razem jednak przeciwnik jest bardzo mocny i na dodatek upatrzył sobie Wallandera jako cel.

Mankell jest mistrzem w umiejętnym operowaniu kilkoma wątkami na raz (co udaje się nielicznym). Najpierw jesteśmy w Afryce, by płynnie przemieszczać się do Danii i Szwecji. Pomimo, że początkowo nic nie klei się kupy w miarę pojawiania się nowych faktów zauważymy misternie utkaną opowieść, która zapiera dech w piersiach.

Mankell, jak zwykle zresztą, stawia na całkowity realizm. Nie dziw, że dość szybko (i bez większych problemów) nakręcono serial na podstawie jego powieści. Plastyczne opisy sytuacji, osób i szwedzkiej prowincji z pewnością ułatwiły twórcą zadanie. W “Białej lwicy” czy to Afryka czy Szwecja – wszystko jest prawdziwe do szpiku kości.

Mimo, że problemy Czarnego Lądu, o których pisze Mankell polskiemu czytelnikowi nie będą pewnie znane tak dokładnie – warto poznać tę historię i odpowiedź na pytanie – Dokąd ten świat zmierza? A nie jest ona zbyt optymistyczna.

Jedna z ciekawszych lektur na lato wydana niedawno dzięki “Polityce” i jej kryminalnej serii w cenie 15 zł.

Przed kilkoma dniami ogłoszono nazwiska 12 laureatów pierwszej Europejskiej Nagrody Literackiej. W tej grupie znalazł się Jacek Dukaj za powieść „Lód” (Wydawnictwo Literackie).

Poszczególnych laureatów wskazały jury z 12 krajów – Austrii, Chorwacji, Francji, Irlandii, Litwy, Norwegii, Polski, Portugalii, Słowacji, Szwecji, Węgier i Włoch. Nagrody otrzymali m.in. Emmanuelle Pagano (Francja) i Paulus Hochgatterer (Austria). Unia Europejska ma wspierać tłumaczenie powieści nagrodzonych autorów na inne języki. Ich dzieła zostaną zaprezentowane na tegorocznych targach książki we Frankfurcie.

Nagrody po 5000 euro wręczone zostaną 28 września w Brukseli. Uczestniczyć w niej będą – poza samymi laureatami – przewodniczący Komisji Europejskiej Jose Manuel Barroso, unijny komisarz ds. kultury Jan Figel i popularny szwedzki pisarz, znany m.in. z kryminałów, Henning Mankell. Ten ostatni wybrany został na ambasadora Europejskiej Nagrody Literackiej na nadchodzący rok.

Nagrody są współfinansowane przez UE, Europejską Federację Księgarzy (ang. EBF), Radę Pisarzy Europejskich (EWC) oraz Federację Wydawców Europejskich (FEP). Celem wyróżnienia jest zwrócenie uwagi na kreatywność i różnorodność współczesnej literatury europejskiej, jej promowanie, a także zwiększanie zainteresowania dziełami z innych krajów

Laureaci z pozostałych krajów uczestniczących w europejskim programie Kultura (w sumie 34 kraje, poza unijnymi: Islandia, Liechtenstein, Norwegia, Chorwacja, Macedonia, Serbia i Turcja) zostaną ogłoszeni w dwóch etapach do 2011 roku.

Regulamin nagrody pozwala nominować do niej pisarzy, którzy w ciągu pięciu lat przed daną edycją opublikowali od dwóch do pięciu książek. Dzieła nominowanego autora powinny też być tłumaczone na co najmniej jeden, ale nie więcej niż cztery języki europejskie. „Nowa Europejska Nagroda Literacka jest więc wyróżnieniem dla pisarzy raczej »na dorobku« niż z dorobkiem” – twierdzi prof. Jerzy Jarzębski, przewodniczący polskiego jury.

Czyli Mankell mniej znany stara się wytłumaczyć dzieciom i dorosłym o co tak naprawdę w życiu chodzi.

W książce znów spotykamy Joela znanego z książki “Pies, który biegł ku gwieździe” (kto czytał ten zna – kto nie czytał – niech przeczyta). Chłopak ma 12 lat i potwornie się nudzi. Jednak następuje coś, co zmienia na chwilę jego życie. CUD, który uchronił go przed śmiercią pod kołami autobusu zmienia jego życie.

Joel postanawia odwdzięczyć się za to, co go spotkało. Swata Gertrud bez nosa z palaczem nadzorującym kotłownię w mieście. Jak na swoje 12 lat robi to z pasją godną Romea jednak nie do końca misternie utkany plan wypala. Siarczyste policzki i bolesne kopniaki przenoszą go w świat dorosłych, który nie jest taki łatwy, jak mu się początkowo wydawało.

Mankell nie jest pisarzem tylko kryminałów z Wallanderem w roli głównej. Jego opowieści o Joelu są równie (jeżeli nie bardziej) mistrzowskie literacko. Poruszamy się w świecie realizmu magicznego, w którym oczyma 12-latka obserwujemy świat takim, jakim … chcielibyśmy go widzieć. Niestety wszystkie “cudowne’ działania spalają na panewce i znów musimy wracać do szarej rzeczywistości.

Mankell nawiązuje do nalepszych wzorów skandynawskiej literatury dla dzieci (i młodzieży?). Bez owijania w bawełnę, mistrzowsko porusza problemy tego świata, które od lat dręczą ludzkość. Mimo, że rozwiązań tu nie znajdziemy to jednak odpowiedzi zadowalają w 100 procentach.

Nie sposób także powiedzieć o doskonałym rysie historycznym. Mankell jak mało kto umie przedstawiać swój kraj takim, jaki był, jaki jest i jak będzie. Doskonała lektura dla wszystkich – zarówno znawców oraz laików szwedzkich klimatów.

To trzeba przeczytać.

Més Mankell, però no millor. En Henning Mankell amb en Kurt Wallander excel·leix, amb la filla de l’inspector i amb el seu company de feina el nivell és gairebé el mateix. Amb “El Xinès” no, llàstima. Els fonaments de la novel·la son els mateixos de sempre: assassinat múltiple sense motiu aparent, policies perduts dins un maremàgnum de feina, pistes falses, implicacions internacionals, pèrdua del sentit de la nostra vida … A El xinès és novetat el fet que el protagonista no és ni el polí ni el dolent. El protagonista és una jutgessa en plena crisi personal i laboral (veure Kurt Wallander) i parenta llunyana de dos de les víctimes. Però perquè no enganxa? No ho sé. Llegint El xinès pots aturar-te; llegint La lleona blanca o Abans de la gelada o Els gossos de Riga no pots, malgrat que ja saps qui és l’assassí des del començament tens que arribar fins al final, no pots deixar sol a l’inspector en les seves investigacions, tens que patir com ell, tens que enxampar al dolent sigui com sigui. La segona novetat d’El xinès és que no se sap qui és el dolent fins la recta final de l’obra. Es pot intuir, es pot imaginar, però no se sap del cert fins els darrers fulls de la novel·la.

Durant una nit d’hivern s’assassinen de forma salvatge els dinou habitants d’un petit poble colgat de neu enmig dels boscos suecs. A partir d’ací la trama es divideix en dos. Per una banda acompanyarem a una família de xinesos des de l’extrema pobresa en la Xina del segle XIX fins al boom xinès dels nostres tems. Viurem amb ells l’esclavitud patida pels pobres a la mateixa Xina i a fora d’ella, per exemple amb la construcció de les vies del tren a l’Oest americà. L’altra línia del relat segueix a la jutgessa Na Brigitta Roslin que s’implica, potser massa i tot, a les investigacions d’aquest assassinat múltiple. Gràcies a casualitats i intuïcions, potser que una mica forçades, la portaran fins i tot a la Xina i acabaran posant-la al punt de mira, real no metafòric, de l’assassí. Ella sola resoldrà el terrible assassinat i de pas arreglarà la seva vida sentimental i alleugerà la vida laboral. Quina dona!

L’argument i la trama semblen versemblants, una mica agafats amb pinces també. No ho sé, és difícil d’explicar que he sentit llegint aquesta novel·la. Em trobo una mica desencisant amb el mestre suec de la novel·la negra. Penso que el Mankell necessita diners per mantenir les seves obres benèfiques a l’Àfrica i que n’ha escrit un llibre alimentici per recollir-hi. De fet, “El xinès” no és un llibre dolent, és un llibre força correcte, amb una història complexa i moderna, avui en dia els xinesos són a tot arreu, escrit amb professionalitat i ofici. Potser que amb massa ofici i poca passió. També és possible que les novel·les anteriors siguin massa bones i aquesta, pel que fet sigui, no arriba a la mateixa alçada. Preguem perquè el Henning Mankell no perdi el pas i continuï fent novel·les tan bones i amb les que ens té tan bé acostumat i que ens ha deixat tantes nits sense dormir.

Ah i el tancar i obrir el relat amb una escena molt semblant ja l’hem vist massa vegades amic Henning.

En una de les pàgines va llegir, distreta, que havien mort un llop solitari en un poble al nord de Gavle.
Ni ella ni ningú sabia que, un dia de gener, el llop havia entrat a Suècia des de Noruega a través de Vauldalen.

Det uppseeendeväckande med Henning Mankells artikel i Aftonbladet är inte vad han säger, det är vi många som gör, men att det är en av Sveriges populäraste författare som säger det i en av Sveriges största tidningar.

Israel är en apartheidstat, Israel är grundat på ockuperad mark. Israel i sin nuvarande form har ingen framtid.

Beskyllningarna om “antisemitism” från apartheidstatens försvarare, folkpartister, Sverigedemokrater och självutnämnda åsiktspoliser, borde snart regna som fosforbomber.

Polar d’Henning Mankell, où le lecteur est mieux placé au départ que l’enquêteur, Kurt Wallander, pour assister à une mort classée naturelle, suivie d’autres plus naturelles du tout… on est ensuite tenu en haleine pour découvrir  les  ficelles invisibles qui déclenchent en cascade des séries dignes d’un serial killer… infernal enchaînement qui cache un programme tout aussi diabolique…

Inicialmente dramaturgo, Henning Mankell (Estocolmo 1948), es hoy, sin duda, uno de los escritores de novela negra más admirado, afamado y seguido de la actualidad, y uno de los fenómenos comerciales imprescindibles de estudiar de la literatura de este comienzo del siglo XXI.
Mankell tiene en su haber una larga lista de trabajos que incluyen narraciones infantiles, colaboraciones periodísticas y teatro, su pasión inicial. Pero, sin duda, su éxito esta encarnado en las aventuras y las angustias de su personaje principal, el complejo inspector Kurt Wallander. Un policía enfermo, angustiado por el futuro político y social de su país y obsesionado por su propio devenir, como policía y como hombre, que encarna todo el pensamiento reflexivo de Mankell en su novela negra, una novela de alto valor literario, pero cuyo interés se esconde en el continuo diálogo del autor con su realidad inmediata, en el continuo análisis de esta. Autor y personaje encaran la vida a veces de lado, pero nunca de espaldas. De igual edad, ambos rechazan el mar y las playas, buscan la felicidad en las viejas ciudades, en sus calles y en sus plazas, en el trabajo, y en la opera italiana.

Socialdemócrata y hombre del frió norte, Mankell ha traslado al inspector Wallander sus propios miedos y angustias ante lo que para muchos deudores del estado del bienestar es la quiebra de este y el miedo a una nueva sociedad, marcada por la emigración, el mestizaje, la perdida de las referencias y de las seguridades estatales, en cuyo marco se inscriben los cambios que en los últimos años han rodeado y sitiado a la sociedad sueca; como la voladura de la URSS, la guerra internacional contra el terrorismo o la crisis de valores del mundo occidental. Es un pensamiento que de forma persistente, refleja, analiza y denuncia en sus historias negras, el profundo cambio corporal de Europa, cada vez manos occidental, menos blanca, menos cristiana, menos aseada, y más laica, sosa, obesa e insultantemente rica. Y en medio de esa transfiguración, teñida por la inmigración y el imperio de la violencia, la indolencia y la degradación de la clase política, que manifiesta una continuada incapacidad para asumir su responsabilidad y liderazgo en el cumplimiento de sus funciones básicas: garantizar la vida, la libertad y la propiedad de los ciudadanos. Claro que la dejadez comienza en el propio incumplimiento legal y ético de la ciudadanía.
Todos estos elementos son perceptibles en su magnifica saga policíaca, a través de títulos ya legendarios como “Asesinos sin rostro” (1991), “Los perros de Riga” (1992), “La leona blanca” (1993), “El hombre sonriente” (1994), “La falsa pista” (1995), premio Macallan Gold Dagger a la mejor novela negra publicada en Gran Bretaña; “La quinta mujer” (1996), “Pisando los talones” (1997), “La pirámide” (1999), o “Cortafuegos”. Pero la complejidad de Mankell no acaba ahí. Director desde hace algunos años del Teatro Avenida de Maputo (Mozambique), sus seis meses anuales en Mozambique y la innegable presencia desde entonces de la cultura portuguesa en su vida, especialmente a través del pensamiento de Pessoa, han determinado una obra mas intimista, mas volcada a las esperanzas y la miserabilidad humana, en un ritmo mas cadencioso, gris y preciosista, visible en su extraordinaria “Comedia infantil” (1997), la primera novela de un extraordinario ciclo africano, escrito desde la perspectiva de un niño, y tratada con enorme magia y sutileza, que no enmascara, sin embargo, la dureza del tema tratado. La grandeza de Mankell estriba en que en cada cambio de tono, en cada giro, en cada vacilación de sus personajes, estos han sido seguidos por su publico, un publico creciente, comprometido y expectante, que ha llevado a Mankell a publicar en 35 lenguas más de 20 millones de ejemplares, inspirar una serie de televisión y trasladar su universo al cine, de la mano del cineasta Paul Verhoeven (“Pisando los talones”, que pronto llegará a nuestras pantallas).

Todo ese universo de sensaciones mezcladas y, a veces confusas, se ha trasladado en sus últimas obras, a las andanzas de Wallander, un heterónimo, más que un alter ego, tras el cual Mankell nos transmite sus dudas y ansias y, probablemente, las de toda su sociedad. Desde hace algún tiempo, Wallander, como una metáfora de la vieja Europa, encaja con dificultad el paso de los años, sufre una rutina laboral exasperante que le conduce a hábitos alimenticios indeseables, acompasados de un dormir liviano y escaso que mina a cada instante su vida y su esperanza, ambas disipadas de forma creciente, en un proceso que esta alejando a los dos compañeros de viaje, a Mankell a la dulzura y la sencillez de África, a Wallander a las sombras, ocupando su puesto su hija.
En una reciente entrevista, realizada a través del correo electrónico, como estandarte altivo de su inexpugnable intimidad, Mankell ratificaba lo que toda la crítica y su público admira y reconoce en su obra. Para Mankell, la novela negra no es más que un mero escenario, casi superfluo, el crimen y su estudio no es más que la herramienta necesaria para analizar a la sociedad sueca, y por ende la europea. En realidad, el horror del crimen no es más que la forma mankelliana de mostrar al mundo su propio horror ante el mundo que le rodea, un mundo poblado, dice el autor, de inmoralidad de políticos y policías, de xenofobia o de violencia contra las mujeres. Así, cada expediente, cada historia, no es mas que una tortuosa mirada a la descomposición de su mundo europeo.
Su protesta contra la guerra de Irak se ha convertido, por encima de la crueldad del hecho, la queja contra una actitud que esta haciendo jirones la imagen y la influencia de occidente, y que lastra el desarrollo de mundos enteros como el africano, que se aleja, según el autor, de una influencia, la europea, que podría ayudar a su desarrollo. Junto a ello, la xenofobia, se plantea en su obra como una de las más terribles realidades, aquella que hace descender a Europa a los infiernos morales e hipoteca nuestro futuro.
Con todo, una cierta esperanza e ilusión emana de estos dos personajes. “No es mi presencia en Mozambique una huida, las dos perspectivas, la europea y la africana, me dan una opinión más amplia del mundo actual”. Y esa doble perspectiva le ha permitido valorar aun más la democracia, un régimen frágil, pero excepcional, según relata el escritor.

El éxito de su obra demuestra por otra parte, cuanto de comprensión y asentimiento hay en Europa por su pensamiento,algo menos en América, cuanto de soterrada nostalgia hay en las sociedades del continente, y cuanto de miedo a un futuro que nos arrastra a la perdida de unas libertades amenazadas por la enfeudación, el totalitarismo cotidiano y la violencia descarada que el estado democrático es incapaz de atajar. Obviamente, todas estas consideraciones políticas no son seguidas por todos sus conciudadanos. Y esa falta de sentido común, es lo que mina la salud del Wallander.
La acertada política editorial de Tusquets Editores nos esta proporcionando la satisfacción de encontrarnos con esta joya del pensamiento actual. Tras la reciente publicación de Cortafuegos, ocho títulos de Wallander pueden leerse ya en orden cronológico, en una magnifica traducción de la española Carmen Montes Cano. De entre ellas, quizás las mas fundamentales sean sus novelas “La quinta mujer”, “Asesinos sin rostro”, “La falsa pista”, y “Los perros de Riga”, en la que destaca su altísima calidad narrativa y la descripción minuciosa y clara del derrumbe de la URSS.
En la actualidad, el atormentado policía de Ystad, Escania, ha dado lugar a una serie televisiva sueca, que pronto llegará a la televisión española, y que ha sido precedida de la publicación de “La pirámide”, cinco historias del Wallander anterior al comienzo de la serie, que permite adentrarse con mejor conocimiento en el mundo de este policía, y que, como curiosidad, el autor ha dedicado al actor protagonista de la serie. La Pirámide es, en realidad, la reunión de dos narraciones breves, “La cuchillada” y “La pirámide”, y tres relatos, “La grieta”, “El hombre de la playa” y “La muerte del fotógrafo”, que rescatan otros tantos momentos de la biografía de Wallander. Lamentablemente, para los que seguimos su obra, esta nueva publicación redunda en uno de nuestros miedos, y es que en el ‘Prefacio’ de La pirámide, donde Mankell pone titulo a su saga “novelas sobre el desasosiego sueco”, el escritor se ratifica en su idea de eliminar a Wallander.
