La Mano à la conquête de l’Argentine

“Il y a dix ans, en 1988, le premier disque de la Mano Negra, Patchanka, sortait en France et dans le reste de l’Europe. Un cocktail explosif de rythmes nés en Afrique, partis jusqu’en Amérique, mûris aux quatre coins de l’Europe et débarqués en exilés dans la France multiculturelle de la dernière décennie du siècle. Les ingrédients ? En voici quelques-uns : ska, salsa, reggae, hardcore, rockabilly, flamenco et rock. Le tout servi par des gens qui voyaient dans l’esprit punk autre chose qu’un jean déchiré, un collier de chien, des épingles à nourrice et une crête au savon.

D’emblée, la Mano Negra frappe un grand coup sur le marché français, au point d’attirer l’attention de la multinationale Virgin, qui les signe immédiatement. Ensuite viendront les albums Puta’s Fever, King of Bongo, la compilation Amerika Perdida, Casa Babylon et l’incroyable live intitulé In the Hell of Patchinko. Dans la mémoire collective du rock, cette aventure reste marquée par le visage tanné et souriant de Manu Chao, chanteur français et fils d’un journaliste espagnol. En septembre dernier, il était à Buenos Aires pour la promotion – haute en couleurs – de son premier disque solo, Clandestino, un superbe recueil de chansons de l’errance. Il y a dix ans, grâce à la Mano, les Argentins découvraient que le rock français ne se limitait pas à Johnny Hallyday, Jean-Michel Jarre et quelques autres. Aujourd’hui, l’importance historique de ce dixième anniversaire est telle que la maison de disques vient de sortir en Europe un Best-of, qui devrait arriver à Buenos Aires en mars prochain.

Mais c’est en 2002 que l’on fêtera le véritable anniversaire de la Mano Negra en Argentine. Cette précision est capitale si l’on veut comprendre l’histoire du rock français dans ce pays. En 1992, le groupe déboule presque par hasard à Buenos Aires, dans le cadre d’un invraisemblable projet culturel français censé célébrer (?) le cinq centième anniversaire de la découverte de l’Amérique. Au cours de cette expédition maritime, baptisée Cargo 92, un bateau (le Melkiades) sillonna le continent avec, à son bord, une troupe d’artistes de rue, des compagnies théâtrales et un groupe de rock : la Mano Negra. Certains habitants de Buenos Aires se souviendront peut-être du défilé insolite sur l’avenue du 9-Juillet, au cours duquel des gens représentaient l’histoire de leur pays. Les membres de la Mano étaient installés sur la remorque d’un camion. Mais ils doivent surtout leur célébrité à un incident ô combien médiatique – et tout à fait fortuit… Un soir, une partie du groupe est arrivée dans les studios de la chaîne Canal 9 pour participer à l’émission La TV ataca. Il s’agissait d’une opération purement promotionnelle. A la question “Qu’est-ce que la Mano Negra ?” l’un de ces irascibles Français s’est emparé d’un écran de contrôle et l’a fracassé par terre. Cette scène, mémorable, a duré quarante-cinq secondes. Elle s’est terminée au tribunal, bien sûr. “C’est un accident. On est descendus de l’avion et quelqu’un nous a dit d’aller à la télé. On y est allé, sans se méfier, comme d’habitude, et il s’est passé ce qui se passe quand tu chopes un coup de sang. Le mieux aurait été de ne pas y aller, parce qu’après on a eu droit au bazar habituel : il fallait qu’on paie l’écran, ils voulaient nous expulser, nous renvoyer en France… Trois jours plus tard, ils ont fini par nous demander de revenir à l’émission”, expliquait à l’époque Manu Chao.

 En 1992, le concert de la Mano Negra a attiré environ un millier de personnes, dont la plupart n’ont pas payé leur place. C’est là que tout a commencé. La prestation du groupe a sans aucun doute marqué un tournant dans la relation entre l’Argentine et le rock français. L’influence de cet événement somme toute modeste s’est ensuite concrétisée avec les trois éditions argentines du festival des Francofolies, puis, récemment, avec le premier festival organisé et patronné par le magazine les Inrockuptibles [qui a une version argentine]. Y ont participé trois groupes français (FFF, Dolly et Autour de Lucie), accueillis par quelques hôtes de poids, parmi lesquels Gustavo Cerati et Illya Kuryaki, auxquels sont venus s’ajouter Carca, El Otro Yo et Los Látigos. De la Mano Negra à l’édition d’un magazine de rock français en version espagnole, en passant par les Francofolies… Le résultat, sans parler des chiffres, est bel et bien positif.
“Une petite précision : l’idée du festival est, à terme, de se détacher un peu de l’échange franco-argentin”, souligne Juan Di Natale, porte-parole de l’événement, responsable des pages musique du magazine et principal sélectionneur du plateau français. “Nous espérons tous que ce sera la première édition d’une longue série, avec l’arrivée, dès l’an prochain, de groupes non français. Nous ne sommes pas aux Francofolies, bien que ça y ressemble.” Le point de contact est sans aucun doute l’autre producteur-organisateur-mentor du festival, Philippe Bouler, qui fut également responsable du projet Cargo 92. Bouler a envoyé des musiciens argentins en France (Fito Páez et Charly García en tête) et invité des Français ici, à chaque édition des Francofolies. Il est également à l’origine de la version argentine des Inrockuptibles (dont il est le directeur général) et partage sa vie entre les deux pays. En juin 1997, après la troisième édition du festival (auquel participèrent les Argentins Diego Frenkel, Los Visitantes et Babasónicos et les Français Aston Villa, Noir Désir et Zebda), il a décidé de mettre fin à l’expérience parce qu’“ici, en Argentine, tout est McDonald’s, Nike et Coca-Cola”. En 1995, les premières Francofolies avaient attiré 8 000 personnes, contre 5 000 l’année suivante et à peine 2 000 en 1997. Le Français fou s’est lassé. “Ça ne pouvait pas fonctionner parce que c’était un événement annuel. Maintenant, il y a un lien avec le magazine, avec le type de musique que nous plébiscitons et avec notre lectorat, qui s’intéresse davantage à ces choses-là. L’objectif est d’en faire un événement, d’organiser des soirées après la scène, de ne pas se limiter à un concert par soir”, explique-t-il. En tout cas, voilà une façon intéressante de découvrir des sons inédits, des voix nouvelles et des styles revisités selon les perspectives les plus diverses. Quant au reste, l’avenir en décidera.”

I have tasted this wine in a wine tasting organized by one of my favourite wine handler in my town, AixVinum (www.aixvinum.de). And like always, it was really difficult to really examine all the element of a good wine, which it deserves, in such an occasion. Especially when you were faced with 40 to 50 bottles of delicious wines. So what I normally do is to identify which wine I like and bought it home to reconfirm it later. Judging the wines using only my guts or Bauchgefühl. Just like what Philipp Kuhn use to paint his wines.

Mano Negra means black hand in english and stands for the black hands the winemaker gets from making this wine. This is a red cuvee made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Blaufränkisch aged in oak. Both are not typical in Germany, the former is well-known world-wide, while the latter is typically found in Austria. Surely you cannot find such a cuvee so often.

The color is dark reddish violet. The nose is round, soft and refreshing with intense sweet fruit; cassis, raspberry, cherry and blueberry, complemented by spice, pepper, coffee bean and sweet vanilla. A really friendly nose that comforts you. In the mouth, penetrating acid balanced out by multilayered sweet fruit; ripe cherry and blueberry, made more complex by hints of coffee bean, spice and vanilla. The texture is light, smooth and round. Great and enjoyable balance, with good smoothing finish.

This is a really charming and easy-to-drink wine, with just enough elements to keep you interested without being too serious. What I like is the play and balance between two grape; dark heavy Cab versus refreshing Blaufränkisch. And all this is made more fun by the oaky elements. I had this wine after a really tired week and it simply cheered me up. It was just like talking to your close friends on a big soft sofa in a lazy afternoon.

Escuchando  la  reacción  de  Thierry  Henry  sobre  la  mano  que  cometió  en el  partido  contra  la selección de Irlanda, en el cual después de todas las criticas recibidas pide se repita el partido, en este caso no aplica tal cuestión debido a que fue error de apreciación y no de reglamento.

Ha  habido  manos  igual o  mas descaradas en el  mundo  y  de los grandes jugadores como él,  por mencionar algunos Raúl del Real Madrid, el “Kun” Agüero, Lionel Messi y la más recordada por todos, aquella de  Diego Armando  Maradona  en el mundial  de México ’86  contra  Inglaterra  en cuartos de final, tal vez ésta última y la de Henry las más relevantes debido al tipo de partido y lo que significo en ambos casos el gol del triunfo para eliminar al rival.

Ahora  este tipo  de cosas  afecta  más de  lo que debería al  jugador de futbol, porque durante mucho tiempo  se  le   recordará  por   la  trampa  que  hizo,   y   toda   esa  carrera   brillante  queda  a  un  lado injustamente, obviamente no para todos, ni para las estadísticas pero si para la gran mayoría.

Los que jugamos futbol a cualquier nivel pongámonos en su lugar, te llega una jugada  en la que el partido esta tenso y es importante sacar la victoria,  sin  predisponerte a  hacer trampa, te mandan un balón en el área el cual te bota fuerte y por reacción la tocas con la mano  y tienes oportunidad  de que no se te vaya, creo haríamos lo mismo  que él, la única  ocasión que  he visto que  “alguien” del equipo beneficiado le haya dicho al arbitro que hicieron trampa fue en una película de Chespirito llamada “El Chanfle”.

Así que no hay porque  “crucificar” a Henry por este hecho,  son circunstancias  del  futbol  que  ahí quedan y no lo hacen menos del jugadorazo que es.

Corría el tiempo extra del partido de vuelta entre Francia e Irlanda, por el repechaje europeo rumbo a Sudáfrica 2010, cuando los galos perdían 1-0 contra Irlanda en el Stade de France, luego de vencerlos 1-0 en Dublin, y tras un centro de Florent Malouda, el delantero Thierry Henry controló dos veces el balón con la mano para darle el pase de gol a William Gallas; el gol que le dio a “Les Bleus” el pasaje a Sudáfrica 2010.

“La Mano de Dios II”, o “La Mano Negra” son de los adjetivos que se le han dado a este mediocre gesto del jugador del Barcelona, que ha causado reclamos del gobierno irlandés y de su federación de futbol, además de todo el mundo futbolístico pensante.

El sitio oficial de la FIFA no publica nada sobre esta trampa que metió a Francia en el Mundial del 2010, que sólo escribe en su artículo dedicado a los últimos clasificados de la UEFA:

“La clasificación se decidiría en la prórroga, en una confusa acción que se saldó con el empate de Francia, clasificada para su cuarta fase final consecutiva tras sufrir durante muchos minutos”.

Y termina:

“El destino eligió finalmente, pero la República de Irlanda se va con la cabeza alta”.

Qué se podía esperar de la FIFA?… Mientras tanto Henry dijo que él no era el árbitro…Lamentable del ex Arsenal.

Pero bueno, si todavía no han visto esta clarísima mano que dejó a Irlanda fuera de un mundial, o son masoquistas y quieren volver a hacer corajes, aquí les dejo el video.

Can we have a time-out or a do-over? I don’t really need an apology for the Pussycat Dolls. I just want the music industry to regain its innovation, its verve, its oomph. I’d like to listen to the radio and not be so irritated that I want to pummel it and any other nearby appliances.

Music has become homogenized and stagnant, a product of the same stale ingredients. Abroad, many American artists break into the foreign markets and command a healthy following. Stateside, practically nil is heard of the thousands of international artists that make up the global pulse.

Now, when that diversity, that breath of fresh air, is more vital than ever, we keep the music narrow.

My best professors of hope were in the ghettos of South America or Africa. These guys are in a situation 10,000 times worse than mine, or than other first-world individuals, but they got more hope than anybody. When you are in a ghetto of South America, you cannot afford depression. You have your children to feed everyday. So you have to go out on the street to feed your children. There is no time for depression. So, hope.

Paris-born and of Spanish descent, Manu Chao is arguably the best-known world music artist this side of the Milky Way.

He is a restless troubadour rarely in one city long enough to visit all of his friends. He sings in French, Spanish, Galician, Portuguese, Italian, Arabic, English and Wolof. He weaves sound bytes from Subcomandante Marcos into his music, indicative of his longtime support for the Zapatistas in Chiapas, Mexico.

During his stint with the multi-cultural and highly popular Mano Negra, he toured South America by both cargo ship and train, performing on each conveyance to audiences of campesinos and guerrillas.

He still busks in Barcelona, doesn’t own a cell phone, and brushes off industry temptations to sell his songs off for Nike commercials or to crash late night after-parties with Kanye West.

Manu is a star by not giving a shit about stardom. He took his cues from the best.

‘Every time I met any of my heroes I was disappointed – the exception was [The Clash's] Joe Strummer, who was like an uncle to me. The last time I saw him was at a festival in Japan, sleeping out in the woods, jamming by a fire and putting on little tapes he’d made to keep the atmosphere going.’

‘Joe absolutely adored Manu’s music and was a friend,’ says Strummer’s widow, Lucinda. ‘I met him once with Joe at the Shepherds Bush Empire, in 2002, and there was lots of excitement when Joe turned up before the gig – attempting to speak to Manu in his broken Spanish.’ (Full article here.)

A product of an immigrant community, Manu grew up listening to a mishmash of musical styles. Blending Latin, punk, rockabilly, ska, folk, pop, reggae, African, jazz, rap and flamenco music came naturally for a guy who also shifts between languages on each song.

His unique musical leanings have dispatched him to everywhere from Tijuana to Bamako, and as he traveled, he became angry. Angry about the poverty and the injustices, the lack of action by the governments, the senseless suffering. But he transforms that anger into something positive. In Manu’s mind, it’s too easy to become a nihilist or a cynic. Optimism is what the people need.

I knew about activism prior to becoming a fan. I rallied around Amnesty International as a teenager. I sneered at American extravagance out of concern for the world’s poor. I wrote to my congressmen. I wore the t-shirts and bought the bumper stickers.

But increasingly the crusade felt empty. Without learning more about the world at large, I couldn’t fully understand the cause. I’d remain nothing more than a misguided radical.

Manu Chao filled that void in my life. This diminutive man with the messy hair and rumpled clothing reported the lessons of his travels – stories from the disenfranchised, the underprivileged, and the silenced – through masterfully crafted ditties of protest and hope.

This call-up is a responsibility that Manu doesn’t take lightly. He knows his fame connects him to the ears of millions. But he also knows that his public role means he must speak for those who cannot. He must make his time at the mic count.

Injustice. War. Heartbreak. Boogey Men. Immigration. Soccer stars. Environment. Prostitutes. Globalization. Tolerance. Revolution. Peace.

Manu Chao concert crowds are mini-U.N. assemblies, swarms of people from various ethnic groups chanting, cheering, jumping, dancing barefoot, and waving their respective national flags.

It doesn’t matter that only alternating sections of the crowd understand the words of any given song at any given time. They understand the energy. They understand that despite our differences or allegiances the music shrinks the space between us. The music equalizes our human distortions.

You won’t likely find a moderate Manu Chao fan. You either run into people who have never heard of him, or you run into Manu Chao disciples gleaming with loyalty so intense the total wattage could power all of the favelas in his beloved Rio de Janeiro.

He challenges us to wake up, to participate in the world, to see the horizon past our neatly trimmed lawns or favorite radio station.

We have tightened our national borders so much it’s easy to forget that music or life or anything exists outside of our “Party in the USA” borders.

It’s easy to forget that residents in far off places also share our journey. They also love until it hurts, laugh at a good prank, ache for a hungry child, fuck up relationships, want a chance to be heard, and enjoy a good backbeat.

Perhaps we should TiVo ourselves for a change and tune in to the regularly scheduled broadcasts of Anywhere But Here.

Perhaps we should widen our aperture, tear down all barriers, physical or otherwise, and take a hard look into the eyes of others without our nationalistic filters.

Perhaps we should listen to Manu Chao.

This question, they ask me very often: can music change the world? It can help. But it’s not a question only of musicians. Now the situation is so bad, we need musicians, we need taxi drivers, we need fishermen, we need students, we need the workers. We need everybody. We need all of society; we don’t only need the musicians. That’s not enough.

Dos empresas españolas deberán pagar 132.000 dólares al cantante franco-español Manu Chao por plagiarle una canción para un anuncio publicitario, según una sentencia de un juzgado de Barcelona, noreste de España, confirmó a la AFP el lunes el Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Cataluña (TSJC).

Las empresas españolas demandadas son la editora del diario gratuito ADN y la agencia de publicidad que realizó el video publicitario, que fueron condenadas por atentar a los “derechos de propiedad intelectual y a la integridad de la obra”.

Según el Juzgado Mercantil número 3 de Barcelona, la agencia publicitaria The Loves Comes (TLC) hizo una campaña publicitaria para el diario gratuito ADN en septiembre de 2007 utilizando una canción similar a la que el cantante franco-español Manu Chao compuso en 1999.

En la sentencia, a la cual tuvo acceso AFP, el juez considera que hay muchos elementos similares en la canción “Me gustas tú”, del popular cantante, y la de un anuncio para el cual el representante de Chao había rechazado la oferta de utilizar la pieza.

A pesar de la negativa, “las demandadas difundieron en septiembre de 2007, en televisión e Internet, un anuncio de publicidad del diario ADN en el que, según los actores, se reproduce, comunica y modifica la obra ‘Me gustas tú’ sin autorización, lo cual fue comunicado a las demandadas vía requerimiento”, sostuvo la sentencia.

La demandadas “han infringido los derechos de autor del señor Chao y de su cesionaria de derechos al reproducir, comunicar públicamente, modificar y transformar sin autorización la obra ‘Me gustas tú’ en la referida campaña publicitaria”, según el juez.

Por ello consideró que se trata de “un atentado a dichos derechos de propiedad intelectual y a la integridad de la obra”, alegó.

La agencia publicitaria había recibido la negativa, en junio de 2007, del representante de Manu Chao cuando le pidieron autorización para utilizar la canción.

Ante la negativa, la agencia encargó a otro cantante una versión que resultó similar a la canción de Manu Chao, explicó el juez en la sentencia.

Finalmente, el juez condenó a la editora del diario y a su agencia publicitaria a pagar 103.000 dólares a la discográfica (de Manu Chao), Radio Bemba, por daños patrimoniales, y a Manu Chao otros 29.000 dólares por daños morales.

Despite having the literally the lowest-quality weed I have ever smoked (as in it’s brown, comes in blocks, and is full of sticks and seeds), Argentina seems to produce a surprising amount of reggae, ranging the spectrum from pop (Los Cafres), to roots (Dread Mar-I), to the populist and politically-tinged (Todos Tus Muertos, Resistencia Suburbana.) Perhaps one of the most interesting exponents of reggae argentino is Fidel Nadal, who aside from being one of the most visible representatives of Argentina’s tiny black minority, is also an observant Bobo Ashanti Rastafari. After fronting Todos Tus Muertos—a group influenced as much by punk and hardcore as  by traditional reggae—and even joining Mano Negra on the classic Casa Babylon (1994), Fidel has cultivated a more mellow sound in recent years,  a move that has increased his fanbase throughout Latin America while dissapointing many longtime followers. I’m certainly unqualified to comment on that controversy, but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to hear “International Love” on the Bay’s urban Latino station last week. It’s not often that a reggae track makes it into the usual mix of reggaeton, bachata, and rock en español, and even rarer that an Argentine artist gets any significant play. Though it definitely opens Fidel up to charges of selling out, “International Love” is undeniably catchy and ebullient, the rare record one can enjoy equally whether smoking a joint solo or dancing in the club. I’ll certainly turn the volume up next time it comes on in the car.

A algún genio del marketing del fútbol global se le ocurrió que para mantener entretenido a medio mundo este domingo, era necesario calendarizar la rivaidad más importante de la liga este día. Así, hoy juegan Boca-River en Argentina, en Inglaterra el Liverpool contra Manchester, en Francia, Marsella-Lyon; y claro, en México se juega el Chivas-América.

Como un aporte, ante tal ola de clásicos, he decidido postear un video clásico del rock de las naciones donde se disputa tales encuentros.

Y abrimos con Argentina. El video es “Imágenes paganas” de la banda Virus.

Y seguimos con Inglaterra. La selección fue difícil, así que opté por una de mis canciones favoritas: “Waterloo Sunset” de The Kinks. La banda que influyó a las bandas de la ola del Brit Pop en los noventas, principalmente Blur.

De Francia, un clásico que ni presentación necesita, y como el personaje otra vez anda en líos, debería ser relanzada la canción. “Santa Maradona” de Mano Negra.

Y cerramos con broche de oro con un vídeo de una canción clásica del Rock hecho en México. En su tiempo vilipendiados, hoy son reverenciados y reconocidos como pioneros y adelantados a su tiempo. Hasta Café Tacuba les rindió honores al hacer un cover de “Alármala de tos”. En fechas próximas se exhibirá en cines (esperemos que llegue a Querétaro) un documental sobre esta banda. Señoras y señores, con ustedes Botellita de jerez y su éxito “Charrock & Roll”

Argentina na Copa, Maradona lá… E um músico que adora cantar sobre don Diego está lançando disco. Sai amanhã no México (e nos próximos dias nos EUA, Canadá e Inglaterra) o novo ao vivo de Manu Chao e da sensacional banda Radio Bemba. Baionarena é um CD duplo + DVD, gravado em Bayonne, País Basco francês. São mais de 2h30 de concerto. E quem já foi a show de Manu e Radio Bemba sabe como é: uma usina de força sonora e alto astral.

La Habana, 6 oct (AIN) El músico francés Manu Chao actuará este viernes, como invitado especial junto al cubano Kelvis Ochoa, en la Escalinata de la Universidad de la Habana, en un concierto en homenaje a Ernesto Che Guevara, organizado por la Asociación Hermanos Saíz (AHS).

Carlos Morlotte, presidente de la AHS, informó en conferencia de prensa que al agasajo, que comenzará a las nueve de la noche, se sumarán también un grupo de artistas de la plástica que realizarán un mural alegórico, en el histórico sitio capitalino. Anunció también que el día 12, Manu Chao se presentará en la ciudad de Santa Clara, en la Plataforma Central del Estadio Sandino, acompañado del proyecto Trovuntivitis, integrado por Rolando del Río, Leonardo García, Diego Gutiérrez, Leonardo García, Raúl Marchena y Yaima Orozco.

Precisó que el ex líder de la banda francesa Mano Negra interpretará temas propios y otros de sus homólogos del patio y que esta vez tendrá como base acompañante la música electroacústica. En ambos conciertos el público disfrutará también del arte del dibujante polaco Wozniak, quien trabaja con Manu Chao y es ilustrador de Le Canard Enchaîné y colaborador de varios medios de prensa franceses.

Escandaloso

Todo parece indicar que estamos ante el último escándalo de los “fichajes” de Florentino Pérez: Leoni, ¿portero comprado?  ¿indudablemente dejó a Cristiano Ronaldo meter dos goles de falta? No lo sabemos. Aún así,  los jugadores del Zúrich lograron dos goles y pusieron en dificultades al Real Madrid jugando contra 12 y sin portero.

El equipo blanco, aún con una presunta mano negra cubriéndole la espalda, perdió la brújula y se metió en un lío cuando menos se lo esperaba. Mientras, el árbitro le llenaba de tarjetas amarillas. Pero al rescate de los blancos llegó por segunda vez el portero Leoni, quien parece que se dejó marcar estrepitosamente otro lanzamiento de falta directo de Cristiano Ronaldo a dos minutos del final para completar una goleada ciertamente “extraña“. A favor de los blancos hay que decir que el penalty por un presunto derribo de Iker Casillas a Alphonse y que convirtió Margairaz, era un piscinazo del jugador negro.

  No soy de acá; me trajeron cuando era chico. A medida que fui creciendo, descubrí las bellezas ocultas, las que están reservadas a los marplatenses de invierno (los que disfrutan las calles desiertas y los vientos capaces de llevarte donde nadie te conoce).

  Siempre evité sacarme una foto con los lobos de la Rambla, así como caminar por la peatonal los domingos. Quise formar parte de ese grupo de gente que sólo va a ver el mar cuando sabe que no hay más que un par de pescadores aguantando los embates de la bruma furiosa.

  Más allá de esta nota, traté de evitar los lugares comunes, y así descubrí una de las mentiras más arraigadas de esta zona (las demás las dejaré para más adelante).

  Constitución duerme, yo la vi. El mote de “Avenida del ruido” no es más que una visión parcial, un anacronismo que apunta a convencer a la gente de que es el mejor lugar para no escuchar su propia voz; es la intención de alguna “mano negra” de crear un espejismo a partir de una premisa falsa.

  Constitución duerme deshecha en un murmullo cortado, cada tanto, por el andar de un taxi desvelado que deambula, infructuoso y con temor, por el carril lento hacia la rotonda de la autovía. Hay un clack-clack que es vociferado con pausas tenues y monótonas por la caja que controla un semáforo que ya nadie obedece.

  De una estación de servicios llega la música de una radio que intenta despejar el sopor frío de la noche de un sereno insomne. Frente a la estación, en el boulevar de la mitad de la avenida, un cartel que marca la salida de la ciudad cruje oxidadamente con la brisa que el mar convida a los pocos seres que se atreven a estar despiertos.

  No andan ni los perros, ni se podría afirmar que los gatos sean pardos, en esta noche en que no se escucha siquiera el mugriento y apurado caminar de la ratas.

  Un joven camina hacia la costa. Se detiene frente un paredón y no duda en orinarlo; la noche sin testigos le da permiso para agitar un aerosol de pintura y dejar escrito el nombre de alguna banda de rock una vez que terminó su fluida tarea. El patrullero no lo va a detener; pasa raudo por el carril de enfrente y dobla por Tejedor hacia Libertad. Tal vez un llamado de emergencia.

  Ahora sí, un gato cruza la avenida; como corresponde, es pardo. Un hombre en bicicleta logra esquivarlo, y el gato no se hace cargo del insulto. Una vez más, la noche se traga esas palabras, al gato y al ciclista.

  Clack-clack, semáforo inútil en rojo para Constitución. El colectivo de la línea 551 (una especie de bloque luminoso y vacío) no debe verlo, porque pasa de largo.

  Todavía falta mucho para que el sol empiece a despuntar. Las cosas no van a cambiar hasta entonces.

After playing a good electro-house-dubstep-ghetto-bolly-bass-set at Elektro-Gönner in Vienna last thursday, I went on talking about music with some people and got this incredible house track played, and thought: Wow, I know this guitar, that’s from Manu Chao’s Spanish guitar player who always used to sit on the terrasse on Plaza del Tripi in front of Bahia Bar, playing on his guitarr when I lived in Barcelona! Amazing, yo flipo de verdad, es que te vas de Barcelona pero la ciudad de encuentra en cualquier parte del mundo.

Formado no final de 1986, o Urban Dance Squad fazia uma mistura arriscada, mas que soava bem natural: rock, hip hop, reggae, funk, ska… a lista é longa!

A verdade é que foram muitos os que fizeram uma fusão como esta — inclusive aqui no Brasil — mas poucos os que o resultado ficou tão bom!

Donos de uma sonoridade tão eclética, puderam repartir o palco com nomes tão diferentes como — se prepara que a lista é ainda mais longa — Red Hot Chili Peppers, De La Soul, Lenny Kravitz, Mano Negra, George Clinton, Living Colour, Rollins Band, Soundgarden, Beastie Boys, Primus, U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Biohazard, Queens Of The Stone Age, System Of A Down, Lee “Scratch” Perry…

Os últims shows do UDS foram em 2006, nos festivais Pukkelpop (com o Radiohead) e Lowlands (com o Arctic Monkeys), quando se reuniram pela primeira vez desde o fim da banda em 1999.

First of let me start by saying that prior to copping this album, I’d never heard of K-Maxx.  It turns out that homie has been making waves in his native Bay Area scene for some time now, releasing the well-received EP and album Sumthin’ Ta Roll With (1994) and Still Rollin’ (1996).  Both of these released can be previewed and bought here, and there are more links to his projects and videos at the end of this review.

Steady on the independent tip, K-Maxx is rolling with Arielle Records, and written, produced and arranged the album in its entirety, relying on just a handful of choice guest appearances.  The Whole Woo Wop is available via iTunes, CDBaby, Amazon or from K-Maxx directly.  Released in late December 2008, the album is just about getting the props it deserves, some 7 months later.

K-Maxx kicks things off with an obligatory intro – you know the deal – and heads straight into the first proper track, “The Price”.  The production is nice, the vibe soulful, and the rapping passable.  One thing becomes quickly evident – although K-Maxx is OK on the mic, he seems much more at home singing, which takes up a lot of space on this album.  That ain’t a bad thing.  Bear with me.  “Recipe” is pretty skippable, though mad soulful on the hook.  “What They Claim”, however, is a hella strong track.  Featuring Young Skitz, the RnB edge remains, and the beat is on some handclapping shit.  The hook is incredibly catchy.

Things get a little bouncier for “Docta”, and Bay Area legend Andre Nickatina hits the mic, to pretty nice effect.  It’s an incredibly corny ghetto-esque love song, but I’m feeling it.  Ari Nicole enhances the soul tenfold for the melodic yet brief “This One”, a shout out to “my brothas and sistas”, a nice, purposeful interlude.  Continuing the vibe for “Life Is Love (Yola)” and drawing upon help from Fed-X of Mob Figgaz, it’s a nice ghetto tale and heartfelt tribute to K-Maxx’s dead homies.

“Til’ Then” continues in a similar vein, and is a stellar “hood issues of the day” track, with lines like “Till my brothas realize there’s better uses for that gun/Till the women say “F that loser – I know I can”…/Till all Africans learn what it really means to be free“.  “Yesterday” is similar, yet again, only the hook is a little more heartfelt and soulful.

“SupaDrunk” is one of the only truly uptempo tracks on this album, and even then it doesn’t follow the traditional route, opting instead for a hella funky vibe.  Ultimately, though, it’s a kinda skippable, entirely sung love song.  Still though, there’s a lot of rap albums nowadays that could benefit from this looser, more carefree vibe.  “Sessual” is a downright eyebrow-raising “bedroom” track.  Ahem.  And it’s kinda boring.

Things pick up for “Let ‘Em Play” – the production is superb – and Mano Negra helps to inject a dose of rap (on that bilingual tip), which after the last two or three tracks is pretty much needed by now.  Despite the title, “Betta Days” isn’t as same-ish as it might sound, rather it’s a solid cautionary ‘hood tale, along the lines of 2Pac’s “Brenda’s Got A Baby”.  Rounding things off with the soulful “Last Verse”, I’m kinda disappointed to see this album end.  What a breath of fresh air

All in all, it’s a strong set.  Highlights include “What They Claim”, “Life Is Love” and “Let ‘Em Play”.  Whilst the quality isn’t maintained as high as it could be throughout, there are no real duds on this album.  If you like your hip-hop downtempo yet heartfelt and soulful, with a healthy injection of quality RnB, The Whole Woo Wop is for you.

Peter Culshaw, from the Telegraph, wrote this wonderful piece about one of my deepest obsessions:  Manu Chao.

He does a fine job of succinctly listing 10 reasons why Manu Chao makes this world a better place.

1. Few stars have such a vast and diverse audience.

Particularly in South America and on the continent, Chao is huge. In places such as Mexico City, he plays to audiences in excess of 100,000. In France, his masterpiece Clandestino is one of the best-selling albums of all time. It sold more than three million copies, as did its follow-up, Proxima Estación: Esperanza (“Next stop: hope”).

2. He crosses boundaries of race and class.

The only other world-music album to have sold more than Chao’s is Buena Vista Social Club. But, whereas that album’s main appeal was to middle-class Europeans and Japanese, Chao’s audience spans the social spectrum. He’s the first artist since Bob Marley (who he reveres as his “professor in simplicity”) to be a real pop star of the people – to have global reach.

3. He has revived the art of rebellious protest pop.

Most pop stars who become politically engaged (from Sting to Tom Robinson) end up seeming worthy and dull, or else, like Bono and Bob Geldof, compromised by their hob-nobbing with politicians. But whether Chao is singing about the plight of immigrants on Clandestino, or Madrid prostitutes on Me Llaman Calle, or Baghdad on his superb new album La Radiolina, his humanity and lack of cynicism shine through. And they are all great, danceable tunes. It’s political pop that is also a fiesta.

4. He has arranged some of the zaniest tours in pop history.

One involved going by boat round all the ports of South America, but the most extreme was when he hired a train to tour war-torn Colombia in 1992, filling it with a rag-tag group of circus artists, punks and hippies, playing to peasants, guerrillas and narcotrafficantes. The tour split his punky, Clash-influenced band Manu Negra. His father, the journalist Ramon Chao, came along and wrote a book about the trip, Un Train de Glace et de Feu (“A Train of Ice and Fire”).

5. He is a true original.

Born Jose-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao in 1961 in Paris to Basque and Galician parents, radicalism was in the family. His grandfather was a refugee from Franco. His music reflects this mixed upbringing, with several languages in his lyrics, and music that mixes punk, ska, latin and myriad other influences. (Struggling for words, Entertainment Weekly described Besoin De La Lune on La Radiolina as a “bizarro spaghetti-western hoedown”).

6. He doesn’t play the industry game.

Chao never toured to promote Clandestino. Music-biz types told him he should tour the US, but he decided to concentrate on South America – a strategy that means when he does play the States, as on his recent tour, he has a ready-made audience of Hispanic fans and so fills large venues there anyway. When he does play big shows he will often arrange smaller, unpublicised concerts to striking dockers, in prisons, or just in small bars. He never plans more than three months ahead, and turns down most interviews and all advertising work. He still busks regularly in the streets of Barcelona.

7. He turned a blind husband and wife from Mali into pop stars.

Only Chao would think it a good career move to produce a couple of middle-aged Malians and only Chao would have created a pop hit. But that’s what he did for Amadou and Mariam – producing their brilliant album Dimanche À Bamako, which sold more than half a million copies. He is now producing an album with their son, Sam. His next project is a record with the inmates of a mental asylum in Buenos Aires (their voices can be heard on Tristeza Maleza, one of the best tracks of the new album).

8. He is an enthusiast.

As a teenager, Chao was obsessed with the guitarist Wilko Johnson from Dr Feelgood. After reading in the NME about the Canvey Island scene, where the Feelgoods came from, he hitch-hiked from France to Essex and went round the pubs trying to recruit a band: “They told me to get lost, little boy.” Joe Strummer of the Clash was both a friend and an inspiration; and Strummer’s latin-punk band, the Mescaleros, showed the influence was two-way.

9. He has a streak of lunacy.

Chao can do silly as well as political: his biggest hit, Bongo Bong (covered by Robbie Williams and Lily Allen), is a ditty about a bongo-playing monkey. After Manu Negra broke up, he found himself depressed and suicidal in Rio. A cow walked into the bar he was drinking in, and he says he was “saved by the tranquillity of the cow’s eyes”. His tour jacket has pictures of cow’s eyes on it, and he says he understands why they worship cows in India, where he hopes to tour soon.

10. His new album La Radiolina is fantastic.

Could this finally break him in Britain and the States? The more rocky sound may alienate some of his world music audience, but the initial signs are good – he has just added a third night at the Brixton Academy to his forthcoming tour of Britain, and tickets are going fast. He certainly seems to walk his talk. In a world where music is increasingly just a commodity, and albums mere units to be shifted, La Radiolina is a heroic and inspiring shot in the arm for pop music.
