Абсент – это легендарный очень крепкий алкогольный напиток, опьянение которым сопровождается сильной эйфорией, а нередко и галлюцинациями, вызванными содержанием в абсенте экстракта полыни.

Многим известно пристрастие Мэрилина Мэнсона к абсенту, также он говорит о том, что этот напиток сильно повлиял на его творчество. Например, в видеоклипе “mOBSCENE”, мы видим абсент, выступающий в своей традиционной роли: как символ порочности. Это соответствует теме песни, призванной стать своеобразным манифестом «низового», «балаганного», непристойного искусства. Сцена клипа с участием Диты фон Тиз — это реализованная метафора. Сидя в бокале абсента с традиционным атрибутом этого напитка, кусочком сахара, в руках, Дита играет роль «Зеленой феи».

И вот, однажды, Мэрлин Мэнсон решил создать свой абсент. Творил он своё детище два года совместно с известным мастером швейцарской алкогольной фабрики Matter-Luginbuhi AG Маркусом Лайаноми и с конца августа 2007 года поступил в продажу в Швеции за 41$. Крепость напитка – 66,6 градусов, но в некоторые страны Европы была поставлена партия 90-градусного “Mansinthe”. По иронии судьбы, в США абсент был запрещён. В самой Швейцарии запрет на абсент, действовавший с 1908 года, был отменен в 2004 году, но при этом наркотические вещества-галлюциногены из него никуда не делись и могут вызвать при неумеренном употреблении слепоту и тяжелые расстройства психики. Мр. Matter о новой марке абсента сказал: “классический абсент с освежающим вкусом на основе всех полагающихся трав и прочих растительных добавок, но никакого сахара и никаких красителей в нем нет”.

Мэнсон представил новинку на закрытой выставке в Galerie Schenk в Кельне, на которой можно было приобрести бутылку из лимитированной специальной коллекции, этикетку для которой нарисовал сам артист. Это автопортрет Мэнсона в старости (таким, видимо, он себя представляет), написанный акварелью.

Правда, критики не одобрили творение рок-музыканта. Многие сравнивают аромат Mansinthe с запахом сточных вод, один критик даже сравнил его вкус со вкусом мочи. Абсент от Мэнсона, также, получил негативную оценку на сайте гурманов: ”запах напитка, может быть, сравним со сточной водой, болотной грязью и техническим спиртом”. Кроме того запах очень стойкий. Как объяснил сам Мэрлин: «Мой абсент настоян на натуральных травах без использования привычных всем ароматизаторов. Все натурально!»
Однако, в 2008 году абсент Mansinthe, был награжден золотом на конкурсе San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Yes, the answer is liquor store. On my weekly (OK, daily) visits I peruse the shelves searching for a hidden gem. A creamy liquor stuck in the back, a girly vodka that will be the life of Friday’s pre-gaming party session. I constantly find myself lost in the aisles emerging an hour later with nothing to show for it but a bottle of Smirnoff, because, let’s be real, a girl can dream but I’m on a college budget here.

But just like memoirs by celebs who have done absolutely nothing worth writing about (Paris Hilton anyone?) crowding Borders’ shelves, I find myself annoyed by the obnoxiously overpriced bottles of celebrity alcohols that have made their way into my serves-the-under-21-crowd corner store. As if infiltrating every other aspect of my life wasn’t enough.

Can’t a girl relax in a liquor store without having to fight her way through tacky advertising gimmicks and heart stopping price tags?

Apparently not. I think a couple of them are so obnoxious and unnecessary that they are worth a mention. And a cease and desist. And the winners are…

Created by shock rocker and absinthe drinker Marilyn Manson, with absinthe expert Markus Lion, this won Gold Medal at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirit Competition. This Swiss natural absinthe was developed over two years and is distilled from vermouth, aniseed, fennel and fine herbs. Naturally, pre-sweetening and artificial colouring is avoided. This is Marilyn Manson’s new brand of absinthe, “Mansinthe.” I didn’t make up that name. It’s what it’s called. Mansinthe. Pretty clever– not. I don’t know what MM actually has to do with this product, except that it has his name all over it.

Marilyn Manson is so predictable. Of course he wants his name attached to absinthe. We get it, Marilyn. You’re dark. Good for you.

Anyway, Manson’s girlfriend, Evan Rachel Wood, recently tried the soon-to-be-legalized substance and this is what she had to say about it:

“For my birthday, I did one shot to try it, and that was it,” Wood said. “I was drunk immediately. Being who he is, Manson wanted to make it as strong as it could possibly be, so it’s got the highest amount of wormwood that you can have legally. One shot of it, and you’re out for the night. Three shots of it, you’re dead.”

Is it just me, or does Mansinthe sound totally awesome? Just kidding. (Just kidding about just kidding.) No, but seriously. Three shots of it and you’re dead? Mansinthe sounds strikingly similar to wheatgrass shots. I know they’re supposed to be healthy, but after three shots of w-grass, I assure you, you will want to die. Or be dead. Also, I wonder if Evan Rachel’s age has something to do with the effect Mansinthe has on her. Since she’s like, fourteen.

Whatever. In the end, I think it’s safe to make the assumption that I will most likely try this product once it’s available. Well, I might not, since I’m a wimp. But I’m sure someone I know will. I’ll let you know if it kills them.

• Jag har skrivit tidigare om det här med folkhälsa och tobak, här har jag en förhållandevis positiv inställning till de tvångsåtgärder som vidtagits (rökfritt på krogen). Men i takt med att dessa landvinningar har avverkats kan man inte lugna ner sig utan börjar titta mot mer och mer tvingande lösningar. Senaste budet är från Ontario där man tvingar handlare att dölja det faktum att man handlar med tobaksvaror. Visst, du kan få visa upp dina varor (om du är licensierad handlare) men då får inte kunden hantera varan innan den är såld. Cigar Aficionado skriver:

• Keepers of the Flame har ännu en lagringsrapport för den som undrat över denna, något mystiska, aktivitet. Denna gång är det en Padilla en Cedro Robusto som man testat dels som “färsk” (direkt från butik), sen efter några månader och, slutligen, efter dryga två år. Resultatet är imponerande:

It’s a hell of a time to be in the absinthe business! New brands are coming out quicker than you can chant a Satanic rite. Absinthe for me has always been a little bit of Heaven…but it seems the media’s plastic devil in makeup wants in on the action.

The trumpets are sounding and the Marilyn Manson Mansinthe hype is upon us! The Antichrist of Absinthe has arrived! Or has he? You not only get a bottle of Mansinthe, you get a label which features a picture created by cheeky Brian Hugh Warner himself. What really made me cringe was the 66.6% alcohol content. Heaven save us from the machinations of those devils in suits… advertising executives!

It’s nice to know that these bottles of devil juice are being knocked out by the very same conservative Swiss distiller (Matter-Luginbühl) also making this new cocktail absinthe (Marteau Verte), from the holier than thou pony tailed founder of the Wormwood Society. Strange bedfellows indeed…but with a common parent.

Who will jump on the bandwagon next? Perhaps we should watch out for Loch Ness Absinthe – created by a little known Scottish hermit, inspired by the green monster of the loch, and a secret recipe book once owned by Lady Macbeth?

Prototype 35 of his absinthe, the wonderfully named Mansinthe, has sold out despite being priced at close to $1000 a bottle.

I was recently offered a few rare original bottles of 100mg thujone Century Absinth (2005) for a figure not dissimilar to that…so I’ll probably go for that classic over a bottle of vapid publicity bubbles, and a depressing label painted by Mr Manson.

“My vice is absinthe. I don’t know so much about its repercussions.”

I suppose that Marilyn Manson should pay a visit to one of the many modern day “absinthe professors” who will enlighten him.

The original absinthe professors frequented the bars and cafes of Fin de Siecle Paris, advising people on how to properly prepare an absinthe. They gave this instruction in return for a glass – nice work if you can get it! Modern day “absinthe professors” frequent absinthe forums, and turn nasty if you ask inconvenient questions about thujone. Thujone is the closed gate to real absinthe sales in the USA – but some say it’s the gateway to the real mystery of absinthe.

The world of absinthe is full of weird and wonderful things of course – we’ve commented before on the zoomorphic absinthe pitchers, but here’s something which surprised me – as well as a cute coffee mug, the Wormwood Society also sell absinthe underwear. Whatever next? Absinthe flavoured condoms? As Kenny Everrett’s character Cupid Stunt used to say: “It’s all done in the best possible taste.”

The first time I drank it (absinthe) was in New Orleans, in 1996, when I was making Antichrist Superstar. It was very undistilled, similar to moonshine. I didn’t drink absinthe again until Y2K. I spent that New Year’s Eve drinking absinthe with Johnny Depp in the south of France. We were ready for the apocalypse, and when it didn’t come, we were disappointed, so we drank more absinthe and set off fireworks. Since then, I don’t drink booze, I drink absinthe.

Marilyn Manson’s Mansinthe Prototype Unveiled

Markus Lion unveiled a prototype of Mansinthe, commissioned by absinthe fan, Marilyn Manson. The unnaturally green Mansinthe, sans wormwood and therefore legal in the US, was to have been released last December. Manson had said, “We hope to have it out in time for Christmas so parents can give it to their kids as a present.“
