Last year when it snowed early in December and I didn’t have to do any holiday traveling I found it felt so much more like Christmas. Due to no traveling I decked out my home and played Christmas music all December… So I found it a lot less Christmassy this year with no snow… a bunch of travel plans and un-decked halls…

So naturally, for me anyway, I was quite excited to have dinner at my man’s parents house where they had just got their tree… I got right into decorating the tree with his mom and I took a few pictures of  her beautiful mantle piece. I just love the simplicity of her holiday decor

Just pick up a length of 1” X 10” select pine, a dozen large Shaker pegs and some decorative molding.

I chose barley twist trim, because I wanted to paint it up like a candy cane.  How easy can it get?  And to make it a little more memorable, do as Grandma and Poppy have done.   Use it as your grandchildren’s growth chart to see and record just how quickly the little ones are sprouting up.

Teknologi pakaian atau garmen, mengalami kemajuan yang bukan main! Di posting “Ketika Seni Ketemu Teknologi” kita menyaksikan pakaian yang indah dengan menyatukan material tekstil dan komponen elektronika; di “Teknologi Emosi“, selain indah pakaian juga dilengkapi sensor emosi si pemakainya. Sekarang, pakaian bisa dibuat tembus pandang. Hocus, pocus, pilatus… puf, badan si pemakai jubah pun hilang dari pemandangan! (Klik gambar.)

Impian pencipta cerita fiksi Harry Potter atau pencipta game “Dungeons and Dragons” yang tokoh utamanya bisa menghilang, sebentar lagi menjadi kenyataan.

Ada 2 teknik menghilangkan pemakai mantel atau jubah ajaib. Teknik pertama adalah dengan proyektor. Di belakang punggung, ada kamera yang sedang merekam adegan pemandangannya; gambar ini kemudian disorotkan kembali ke jubah. Material jubah memantulkan bayangan pemandangan yang di belakang tadi. Cerdik juga.

Teknik satu lagi masih dalam pengembangan. Material ini sangat canggih; sinar yang jatuh ke material di”belok”kan, berkeliling mengikuti bentuk material kemudian menyatu kembali. Tidak ada sinar yang memantul ke mata sehingga memberi kesan obyeknya, hilang!

Hebat sekali teknologi. Jika kelak benar-benar material ini terwujud aplikasnya luas sekali. Pilot dapat melihat landasan bandara yang menembus lantai kokpit pesawat saat mendarat. Dalam keadaan darurat seperti perang misalnya, tank disamarkan sehingga tidak terdeteksi oleh pandangan musuh. Pengemudi mobil dengan bebas dan leluasa melihat kondisi di sekeliling mobil, depan, samping, belakang, atas, tanpa terhalang kaca, bodi atau kabin mobil. Mobil “gundul”! Kaca spion jadi kuno dan tidak diperlukan lagi.

Asyik juga. Celakanya, teknologi canggih ini pasti dimanfaatkan juga untuk tujuan yang kurang baik. Penjahat memasuki rumah tanpa tanpa diketahui, orang membawa barang terlarang tidak bisa dan tidak cukup mengandalkan mata atau kamera saja. Berhati-hatilah.

Mungkin yang menarik dan lucu kalau material dipakai sebagai dinding kamar mandi. Yang mandi senang karena kamar mandi jadi seluas rumah,  yang di luar kamar mandi bingung ‘kok rumah tidak ada kamar mandinya, tetapi suara mandi ada. Hii, ngeri juga…

Just another reason to add to the list of eagerness to own a house. Twig and Thistle once again has found a way to make home decor so fun, easy, and beautiful.  If you haven’t stopped by their blog it is a real winner especially if you are the crafty type.  Perhaps I will just make this and hang it on our back wall so our house smells like cinnamon and pine cones all season long.  ohhh how I love the holidays!

If you do have a mantel and think this is just as pretty as I do here are the instructions/supplies to make it happen!

What You’ll Need:
Pine Cones
Ribbon
Screw Hooks
Hole Punch
Scissors

Instructions:
1. Begin by measuring your mantel or space that you’d like to hang your garland and cut your ribbon. Remember to leave extra for hanging. Once you’ve determined the length, space your pine cones out as you like on a flat surface. The pine cones I used were fairly large so I kept about 4 inches between each one. On the back of the ribbon discreetly mark where each pine cone will go, then punch a hole with a small craft punch. I used an 1/8″ round circle punch like this one.

2. Once you know how many pine cones you’ll need, screw in one screw hook into the top of each pine cone. This takes a little practice and you may need a little elbow grease but once you get the hang of it it goes pretty quickly.

3. Poke each hook through the hole you’ve made in the ribbon and hang! Easy as pie and something that will last for seasons to come!

After being poorly (I feel a lot better more of the time now) I have had the urge to clean the house meticulously and start creating decorations and presents for Christmas. I am rather excited about Christmas this year; I am never really over-the-top excited about it, but this Christmas will be the first in our new house! I put the tree up last night… a lot of people have said that it is far too early, but my family is coming to celebrate Christmas a week early, so why cant I put the tree up a week early!? It is just inspiration standing in the corner now, I cant wait to start putting presents under it.

Yesterday Ryan came home with a new frying pan, which was on sale in Debenhams:

So this led me on to looking at all the kitchenware that Debenhams sell… There are quite a few things that I love, which I am sure you can get elsewhere too, just they are all bundled together in one shop! Here are my selections:

1. Dark grey Roast ‘n Rack by Maxim – I love making roast dinners so much, but I still dont really have the roasting trays for all the ingredients.

2. Cream plate with glass dome lid – I just love the aesthetic of having this in the kitchen with cakes under it!

3. Teal rectangular stoneware dish by Le Creuset – maybe for pasta bakes

4. Cream stove kettle by Prestige – I adore the lines and the shapes that make up these retro-style kettles. I even love the fact you have to put it on the stove, so amazing! There are some of the same/similar style that are electric, but its not really the same thing is it. We also need an upgrade from the £6 kettle I bought a few years ago from Woolworths haha!

5. Azure cast iron casserole dish By Le Creuset – for casseroles of course. Winter is drawing in and I am always a sucker for homemade comfort food. For some reason all the Le Creuset items I have picked here bar one are in blue; I actually like all and any of the colours in the range that they make.

6. Ken Hom 5 piece Wok set by Tao – because I dont have a wok, and I really feel like trying to make stir fry and chinese style chicken.

7. Teal cast iron 26cm square grillit by Le Creuset – because it would make amazing steaks, and you can pour out the juices from the pan afterwards… mmmmm!

8. Spring form cake pan by Kitchen Craft – because I have none!

9. Volcanic regular cast iron grill by Le Creuset – I believe you can either put this in the oven, or as a hot plate on the stove… I love that idea.

10. 5 piece stainless steel set by Prestige – because all of my pans are leaving black flakes in my pasta yuk! Not necessarily this set, but something similar that wont ruin my food.

11. Blue Icona 4 slice toaster by De Longhi – so yummy looking! And blue again… why!?? We need an upgrade from the £5 toaster from Woolworths I bought 3 years ago…

12. 14cm microwave saucepan – when I saw this I thought of Ryan. He always eats beans, and always cooks them in Tupperware pots without handles or spouts, and it looks like a very awkward process to try not to burn your fingers, so this could be ideal!

13. Assam teapot by Bodum – I am never any good at judging how long to leave teabags to steep in the water before pouring, and it either comes out too weak or too strong. So… if I can see what is going on inside the pot I will be ok! It also has a plunger to stop the process when it is right for you, and you can use teabags or leaves and it works!

14. Cream food mixer by KitchenAid – how gorgeous is this machine! We have one in the kitchen at the bar that I work at, I might see if they will sell it to me as it is not really in use.

I am also in the process of designing some quilted Christmas stockings for myself and Ryan, to hang on the wall (where the mantel should be if the house still had one), some knitted presents for my grandparents, maybe some other presents too, and some decorations for the house! I am thinking garlands, and wreaths, and paper chains of course.

Ryan is dying my hair for me tonight, so if I think I look semi-unpoorly afterwards I shall take a photo and paste it to the end of this blog.

Ich sitze gerade im Zug in Richtung Heimat!

Und da habe ich mir gedachte, dass ich was zu dem heute gesehenem schreiben könnte.

Aus dem ganz einfach Grund, dass ich relativ gebannt auf eine Frau geguckt habe und den Blick einfach nicht mehr abwenden konnte.

Da wurde mir von neuem bewusst, dass ja bald Weihnachten ist.

In Jena steht auch vor der Goehte Galerie bereits ein riesen, bisher jedoch noch ungeschmückter Baum und selbst ich (ein Vorweihnachtsgebäck Verweigerer) habe bereits die ersten Spekulatius gegessen.

Um wieder zur Frau zu kommen…

Diese doch schon ältere Dame hätte perfekt als Weihnachtsschmuck an den riesen Baum vor der Goethe Galerie gepasst.

Ich hatte leider nicht so schnell meine Kamera aus der Tasche gekramt und so bog der Bus um die Ecke und ich hatte lediglich den bleibenden Eindruck im Kopf.

Nun ja… um nun endlich zu ihrem Mantel zu kommen…

Gold. Gold. Gold. Ach und Gold!

Ein einziges goldenes Stück Stoff, dass durch ihre doch eher füllige Figur pompös wirkte und einem keine Chance lies sie zu übersehen. Nicht nur ich habe sie mit meinen Augen verfolgt.

Äußerlich erinnerte sie mich an eine der Beschreibungen J. K. Rowlings von Mrs. Weasley!

“Links und rechts die Hühner aufscheuchend, kam Mrs Weasley über den Hof marschiert. Und für eine kleine, kugelrunde Frau mit freundlichem Gesicht sah sie einem Säbelzahntiger erstaunlich ähnlich.” (HP2, 3)

Ihre Haare waren ebenso wie bei Mrs Weasley feuerrot und sie war alles in allem eine recht kleine Person.

Doch wie es dann oft so ist… Gold alleine ist nicht genug und so kam zu all dem Gold dann noch eine große Menge Glitzer was die Christbaumkugel perfekt machte.

Ich hoffe wirklich, dass ich sie nochmal zu Gesicht bekomme… und dann bin ich auf alles vorbereitet. Meine Kamera wächst derweil in meine Handfläche ein.

So kann ich sie wenigstens nicht verlieren oder zu lange fürs ‚aus-der-Tasche-holen‘ brauchen.

Blöd wird es nur, wenn sie kaputt geht oder ich mir eine neue kaufe…..

Ich habe mal im Internet etwas gestöbert und bin noch auf zwei weiter goldene Mäntel gestoßen.

In diesem Fall von Apart, gesehen bei Heine.

Aber schöner finde ich sie auch in diesem Fall nicht, wobei… ich muss gestehen der Erste würde mir in einer anderen Farbe oder an einer jungen Dame mit Cocktailkleid gefallen!

Kritiker behaupten, dass unsere Wortspiele immer schmächtiger und dürrer werden. Sogar von „Mager-Wortspielen“ war die Rede. Rinai hujan selalu membuat saya terharu. Rintiknya, mengingatkan pada masa-masa yang telah lalu. Begitu pula hari ini. Dulu, sewaktu kecil, saya ingin sekali punya mantel hujan. Kuning, itu warna yang saya inginkan. Teman-teman saya yang lain telah memilikinya, dan mereka tampak gagah dengan mantel itu. Untuk anak kelas 2 SD, semua yang berwarna cerah, akan selalu tampak indah. Namun sayang, Ibu tak punya cukup uang untuk membelinya. Walau sempat kecewa, saya harus menurut, dan menahan keinginan untuk mempunyai mantel kuning itu.

Walau begitu, saya tetap kesal. Dan rasa itu memuncak ketika saya harus pulang dari sekolah. Hari itu hujan begitu deras. Saya makin kecewa dengan Ibu. Sebab, jika ada mantel, tentu saya tak perlu kena hujan, dan bisa bergabung bersama teman-teman yang lain. Kesal, dan marah, begitulah yang saya rasakan saat itu. Sementara yang lain tertawa dan menikmati hujan, saya harus berjalan pulang dengan tubuh yang basah kuyup.

Ah..di tengah perjalanan, saya bertemu dengan Ibu. Dia tampak membawakan payung untuk saya. Karena terlanjur marah, saya tak menerima payung itu, dan ngambek, untuk tetap pulang tanpa payung. Walau begitu, ia tampak ingin melindungi saya dengan payungnya. Mendekap, agar saya tak terlalu basah terkena hujan. Hujan makin deras, dan kami pun berjalan pulang, walau saya tetap ngambek dan menolak untuk di payungi. Sesampainya di rumah, tingkah itu terus saya perbuat. Saya tetap menolak untuk berganti pakaian. Akhirnya dengan sedikit terpaksa, hal itu saya selesaikan. Ibu, kemudian datang dengan handuk, dan langsung menyelubungi saya dengan handuk itu. Ada kehangatan yang segera menyergap. Saya menjadi lebih tenang. Tetap, tak ada kata-kata yang keluar dari Ibu, selain terus menghangatkan saya dengan handuk itu. Tangannya terus membersihkan setiap air hujan yang ada di badan. Disekanya kepala saya, agar tak nanti tak membuat sakit. Masih dalam diam, Ibu kemudian memberikan pakaian ganti. Setelah itu, dia masih menyodorkan teh manis hangat buat saya. Ya, segelas teh manis, sebab, susu coklat, adalah hal yang jarang saya rasakan saat itu. Ya, kehangatan kembali hadir dalam tubuh. Walau saya mungkin tak mengerti apapun, saya yakin, ada kehangatan lain yang diberikan Ibu saat itu.

Ya, teman, begitulah. Ibu mungkin tak mampu membelikan saya mantel kuning seperti yang saya impikan. Namun, payungnya telah membuat saya aman. Ibu mungkin tak mampu membelikan saya mantel kuning untuk terhindar dari hujan, namun, dekapannya membuat saya terhindar dari apapun. Ibu mungkin tak mampu membelikan saya mantel kuning itu, namun, handuk hangatnya melebihi setiap kehangatan yang mampu diberikan setiap mantel. Ibu mungkin tak mampu membelikan mantel kuning, namun, usapan lembutnya, adalah segalanya buat saya.

Ibu mungkin tak menjemput saya dengan mobil atau kendaraan lain, namun lingkaran tangannya di tubuh saya, adalah dekapan yang paling indah. Ibu mungkin tak bisa memberikan susu coklat, namun, teh manisnya, lebih berharga dari apapun. Ibu mungkin tak bisa memberikan saya banyak hal lain, namun, dekapan, usapan, uluran tangan, perhatian, kasih sayang, sudah cukup sebagai penggantinya.

Ya, rintik hujan selalu membuat saya terharu. Terima kasih buat Ibu yang tak membelikan saya mantel kuning. Karena, apa yang telah diberikannya selama ini, jauh melampaui semuanya.

muttis kleiderschrank gnadenlos plündern, alles an- und ausprobieren, was in erreichbarer höhe lagerte, stundenlange kostümierungsspiele – das war ein teil meines kindlichen spieltriebs. teile davon (ich sage nur retro) haben sich bis heute erhalten, nur daß aus stunden minuten wurden, weil ich mir mit den jahren eine gewisse stilsicherheit aneignete. leider war damals alles entschieden zu weit, zu lang, zu bunt, zu kratzig, zu fellig, um über das vogelscheuchenartige verkleiden hinaus meinem körper in diese sackartigen formen zu gießen. in diese erfahrung reiht sich die bis zum erbrechen gebräuchliche redewendung wenn du mal groß bist… nun, noch immer ringe ich mit den unterschiedlich ausfallenden konfektionsgrößen. mal denke ich irrtümlich, ich hätte zugenommen, weil ich endlich mal in eine jeans größe 28 passe, dann schlottert wieder die 26 um meinen androgynen arsch. ich vermute dahinter eine taktik der modeindustrie, frauen durch unendliche maßvarianten ein gefühl von anorektischen oder adipösen ausmaßen zu vermitteln, je nachdem, welche marke oder welches herstellerland sich dahinter verbirgt. demnach müßten italienerinnen zum breiten becken neigen, während die französinnen den leib in baguetteform vererben. komischerweise sind diese umfänglichen divergenzen noch nicht dem eu-normierungswahn zum opfer gefallen. und nicht nur deshalb ist mode mit ein wenig geschick gelegentlich ein brillanter gaukler.

bodenlang waberten manche kostümjäckchen anfänglich um mich, später knielang, bis ich hineinwuchs. daran mußte ich denken, als ich beim spaziergang ein schleifendes geräusch hinter mir hörte. es kam mir so unvertraut vor, daß ich mich dezent umzublicken versuchte. jedoch um nicht halsstarrig neugierig zu wirken, übertrieb ich die drehung nicht. so glaubte ich zunächst, jemand würde einen sack hinter sich herzerren. als mich das geräusch einholte, blickte ich  einigermaßen erstaunt auf den ausgefransten saum eines bodenlangen, ursprünglich schwarzen ledermantels, der das trockene laub und den staub aufwirbelte. der xs-mann hatte extra für den xxl-mantel einen federgang einstudiert, so daß der stoff bei jedem schritt kurz über dem boden schwebte, nur um dann schleppend wieder blätter über den gehweg zu fegen. ich wünschte mir, daß alle hausmeister und gärtner dieser welt ihre nervtötetenden, lärmenden, umwelt verpestenden sauggeräte gegen solch praktische laubschleppen eintauschen würden (á la zauberlehrling – besen! besen! seids gewesen!). herrje, und kommt mir jetzt nicht mit dem tierschutz, es darf kunstleder sein. wenn alle passanten gothicmäntel trügen, wären sie endlich außen so schmutzig wie innen. außerdem sollten hochzeiten in traditionellen brautgewändern prinzipiell erst in der periode des ersten blätterfalls erlaubt sein, schleppenträger hingegen gehören der hausordnung halber verboten.

It would be fair to say that the Booker Prize is not as highly regarded in Scotland as it is in England – largely because Scottish writers rarely feature on its radar. Only once has a Scottish writer won the prize (James Kelman in 1994) and this was immediately followed by middle England outrage that a writer who uses swearie words should win a literary prize. The last Scot on a short list was Ali Smith in 2005. Neither Alasdair Gray nor A. L. Kennedy have even got as close as the long list (unless it was before they were published). However, this year I have found myself reading three of the short listed titles (with, I suspect, The Quickening Maze to follow). Summertime I would have certainly read regardless; in the case of both The Little Stranger and Wolf Hall it seemed an opportunity to get acquainted with writers who had interested me in the past but whose work I had never got round to reading. That both were historical novels was neither an attraction nor a deterrent – it is, after all, not what genre you use, but what you do with it that counts. So what has Hilary Mantel done with Tudor England?

One of Mantel’s intentions seems to be to rehabilitate Thomas Cromwell’s reputation. Apparently (and you’ll understand that a Scottish education does not dwell extensively on the reign of Henry VIII) Cromwell is commonly portrayed as an underhand schemer, a 16th century gangster, in opposition to Thomas More’s principled and erudite saintliness. Mantel does this in a number of ways. Firstly, she presents the narrative from Cromwell’s point of view, encouraging the reader to sympathise with him. The use of the present tense makes his need to act and react seem constantly urgent. Cromwell is also generally referred to as “he” rather than by name. However, rather than encourage the reader to identify with him, this often makes the reader take a step back – is this “he” Cromwell or just an ordinary pronoun? – and goes some way to suggesting that he cannot be entirely known or understood. When a character’s name appears in a novel it seems the writer and reader have him entire in that word – the third person pronoun is vaguer and more elusive, it gives that character power over the reader in the same way Cromwell has power over other characters; it even has a slight Biblical feel to it.

Cromwell’s opaqueness to those around him is at least partly a result of his humble origins. Mantel gives us a vivid picture of his childhood in the opening chapter: his violent, abusive father instilling a toughness in him that would last a lifetime. She also invents a series of picaresque adventures across Europe in his youth allowing him to gain experience in warfare, trade and finance, and to master a number of languages, which are referred to in flashback throughout the novel. Clearly Cromwell’s humble origins are important, and perhaps even suggestive of changes taking place in England at the time. However, the narrative so closely follows Cromwell that we have little sense of the country, only the court and we also only have access to other characters’ opinions of Cromwell that they are prepared to share with him. Equally, we are limited to Cromwell’s view when observing the other figures of the court. This tends to mean that the lesser the historical importance the more interestingly realised they are. Mary Boleyn is one good example. Henry and Anne are so often playing a role in public that their private selves are rarely revealed. An exception to this is Thomas More, but here Mantel’s intention is to balance her humanisation of Cromwell with a more flawed rival. In particular, the scene where he ridicules his wife in front of his invited guests is unsettling.

More and Cromwell’s confrontations are amongst the best scenes of the novel. This is partly because Cromwell so rarely shows any passion – he is ever the persuader and the pragmatist. More’s egotism frustrates him:

“You call history to your aid, but what is history to you? It is a mirror that flatters Thomas More.”

This is not to say That Cromwell is unfeeling. He frequently takes those in need into his household and is shown to genuinely care for them. He also seems to have a dislike of execution – perhaps because of a burning he witnessed as a boy. Most importantly, however, Mantel uses his relationship with his wife and daughters, who are all killed by the plague within a few weeks, to present his human side. Though other women come into his life, the impression is given that he never entirely gets over his wife’s death. One particular memory of his daughter also stays with him:

“The year that Grace was an angel, she had wings made of peacock feathers.”

This image reoccurs on a number of occasions. Mantel succeeds in humanising Cromwell without sentimentalising him – though at the expense of exorcising any strong religious feeling he has. In fact, the religious divisions of the time, though occasionally rehearsed in speech, do not seem a central concern of the text.

The Wolf Hall of the title is, of course, the home of the Seymours and Henry’s next wife (and also an apt name for the world Cromwell lives in – “homo homini lupus, man is wolf to man”). Does this create a sense of destiny or a sense of futility? – that having made it possible for Henry to marry Anne, it would now all begin again. This curtailment means that we only see Cromwell in power – we do not see that his destiny, like Wolsey and More, will be to fall from the King’s favour, an overarching narrative that might have more contemporary resonance. Of course, a second volume is planned, but in the meantime this seems a little hollow. For those interested in the period, or in English history, this is a fascinating novel, but beyond that it does not seem to go.

Ich wohne seit kurzem in Jena und es wird hier langsam ziemlich kalt.

Da habe ich mir gedacht, ich sollte mir einen neuen Mantel zulegen, der mich vor eisigen Temperaturen schützt.

Genau das habe ich nun getan.

Es gibt drei absolut TOP Läden hier in Jena und ich bin bei einem der drei (M*shi) fündig geworden.

Von außen sieht man erst einmal gut gekleidete Puppen, die vor einem Namenlosen Laden stehen.

Meine Neugierde und der tolle Einblick in den Laden haben mich letzten endes hinein geleitet und ich habe es nicht bereut!

Man findet dort nicht diese H&M-von-der-Stange-Klamotten sondern etwas ausgefallenes und das gefällt.

Ich hatte ein wirkliches Problem mich zwischen drei tollen Mänteln zu entscheiden und nun bin ich über glücklich und die Erfahrung zeigt, ich habe eine gute Wahl getroffen.

Auch die Leute, die dort arbeiten sind klasse und alle ziemlich einzigartig, das unterstützt auch die Wahrnehmung von dem Laden.

Man wird mit einer großen Freude beraten und die gute Laune ist ansteckend.

Jeder wird mit “Du” angesprochen und es wird nicht auf Doktortitel oder die dickere Geldbörse geachtet.

Dieser Shop ist lediglich in Jena vertreten und es lohnt sich wirklich ihn aufzusuchen und in den Kaufrausch zu verfallen.

Marken von A-Z sind zu finden und der Schuhkeller wurde gerade wieder eröffnet.
