<p>And then check out <em>Dresden</em>. It&#8217;s an extraordinary document of a concert recorded in concert on 20 October 2007 &#8211; extraordinary because it wasn&#8217;t intended for release, it was just a record for the band. It was only when Jan listened to it a while later (and this accounts for the time lapse between recording and release) that he realised what he had.</p>
<p>The band comprises longtime keyboard player Rainer Bruninghaus, sometime collaborator though not previously in this band Manu Katche on drums, and new boy Yuri Daniel on bass. The cover is a rich and multi-faceted red and reflects perfectly the energy, the passion and the sometimes explosive playing that lies within.</p>
<p>Katche is clearly a key driver of the new sound the group has, and the funkier sound of the electric bass is vital, too. But Bruninghaus is not to be ignored and turns in some of the most dramatic playing of the evening. Garbarek is on fire on soprano on the opener and just as impassioned on tenor.</p>
<p>There are familiar Garbarek pieces from previous albums but also some new ones and a stunning version of the beautiful Milton Nascimento song, <em>Milagre Dos Peixes</em> (M<em>iracle of the Fishes</em>).</p>
<p>It&#8217;s just a fabulous recording!</p>

Her er intervjuet jeg gjorde med ham i anledning <em>In Praise of Dreams </em>i 2004, som da var hans første plate på seks år.</p>

<p><!--more-->Jan Garbarek har døpt sin første plate på seks år <em>In Praise of Dreams</em>. Selv insisterer den verdensberømte saksofonisten på at han aldri drømmer.</p>
<p>– Jeg drømmer nesten aldri. Jeg det i alle fall ikke, men så har jeg da også fryktelig dårlig hukommelse, ler Garbarek.</p>
<p>Saksofonisten baserer seg på ord og uttrykk som har festet seg og skapt refleksjon når han skal døpe sine musikalske «barn», og titlene gjenspeiler på ingen måte hans dagligliv. Så også med <em>In Praise of Dreams</em>.</p>
<p>–.Jeg er heller ingen dagdrømmer, jeg er ganske pragmatisk og realistisk. Det er ingen symfoni jeg drømmer om å skrive eller musikere jeg drømmer om å jobbe med.</p>

<p><strong>Begrenset talent</strong><br />
Seks år er gått siden dobbeltalbumet <em>Rites</em>, men med unntak av at den karakteristiske hårmanken er blitt noe mer sølvgrå er alt som normalt i Garbarek-leiren. <em>In Praise of Dreams </em>er lavmælt, melodiøs, dvelende og vakker – slik som forventet.</p>
<p>Føler han aldri behovet for å røske sitt eget musikalske univers opp med roten? Får han aldri lyst til å lage en rockeplate eller leke seg med tunge klubbrytmer som Nils Petter Molvær og Bugge Wesseltoft?</p>
<p>– Nei, mitt talent er såpass begrenset at jeg stort sett bare kan gjøre det jeg alltid har gjort. Jeg finner ofte at folks begrensninger er det som definerer dem, og gjør dem gjenkjennbare. Ikke bare det de gjør bra, men tvert i mot det de ikke kan – og som vi aldri får høre eller se. Det gjelder meg også. Der kommer vi tilbake til drømmene: Jeg har aldri hatt en drøm om å gjøre noe helt annet heller.</p>

<p><strong>Ingen tvangstrøye</strong><br />
<em>In Praise of Dreams</em> er gitt ut på det tyske plateselskapet ECM Records, som Garbarek har vært tilknyttet siden 1970s <em>Afric Pepperbird</em>. Også et selskap vi er blitt vant til hva byr på, selv om det er stor frihet under ECM-boss og -produsent Manfred Eichers regime. Garbarek føler ikke ECM-lydbildet som noen tvangstrøye.</p>
<p>– Nei, og du må huske på at jeg har vært med hele veien. Jeg har nesten vært med på å lage den tvangstrøyen. Det er mitt gode skinn, så jeg har ikke noe behov for å gå ut av det. Jeg har alltid fått gjøre det jeg har lyst til. ECM-musikken spenner fra Schubert via ny klassisk musikk til frijazz og forskjellige hybrider. Det har ikke så mye med genre å gjøre, men er snarere en tone man kan finne igjen i flere genre.</p>

<p><strong>Ærespris</strong><br />
«Hans virksomhet har vært viktig for økt kulturell forståelse i dagens globale virkelighet,» het det i begrunnelsen da Garbarek denne uken ble tildelt Norsk kulturråds ærespris. Et gjennomgående trekk i karrièren er at han alltid har vendt blikket utover, og samarbeidet med musikere fra en rekke andre land og genrer.</p>
<p>På <em>In Praise of Dreams</em> har han hyrt inn armensk-amerikanske Kim Kashkashian og franske Manu Katché. Førstnevnte er en av verdens ledende bratsjister, og hun har en langt større biografi på nettsiden Allmusic.com enn Garbarek. Trommeslager Katché er heller ingen smågutt, med storheter som Sting, Peter Gabriel, Dire Straits, Tori Amos og Joni Mitchell på CV-en – samt en rekke Garbarek-plater.</p>
<p>– Jeg blir bare en småspurv sammenlignet med disse to, men det er jeg som har lagd musikken – så da blir det rimelig at navnet mitt står alene på plateomslaget, smiler Garbarek.</p>

<p><strong>Bonus: Jan Garbarek om sampling</strong></p>
<p>På <em>In Praise of Dreams</em> fortsetter Jan Garbarek å bruke synthesizere og samplere i samspill med akustiske instrumenter, etter at han ble kurset av datteren Anja under arbeidet med <em>Rites</em> fra 1998.</p>
<p>– Sampleren er en lydkilde og et instrument i seg selv. Det er visse ting man må bruke akustiske instrumenter til, jeg ville for eksempel ikke gitt ut en plate med bratsjsamplinger. Jeg kjenner dessverre ikke så mange som har sampler som hovedinstrument, og jeg bruker den mest til å skape «scenografien» på platene – lydlandskapet, sier Garbarek.</p>
<p>Garbarek tok tidlig i bruk synthesizer og sampler, som på 1986-soloplaten <em>All Those Born With Wings</em>. Han har heller ikke noe i mot i å bli samplet av andre artister – bare han blir spurt først.</p>
<p>– Jeg har takket ja til flere band, men vil holde på retten til å si nei. Jeg synes også man skal betale for samplinger, og bruker selv bare samplinger som er godkjent og betalt for. Da jeg ble kjent med The Hilliard Ensemble hadde de nettopp saksøkt Enigma, etter at popgruppen hadde brukt et sample fra ensemblet uten tillatelse. Hilliard-ensemblet vant, og fikk en stor erstatning.</p>

<p><strong>Fakta &#8211; Jan Garbarek<br />
</strong>* Musiker og komponist, oppvokst på Årvoll i Oslo.<br />
* Falt for saksofonen da han som 14-åring oppdaget <em>Giant Steps</em> av John Coltrane. Vant NM i amatørjazz året etter, og platedebuterte med <em>Til Vigdis</em> i 1967 (oppkalt etter hans kone).<br />
* Har, sammen med Terje Rypdal, siden 1970-tallet vært representant for den krystallklare og dvelende norske jazzen på det tyske plateselskapet ECM – døpt «the nordic sound».<br />
* Har gitt ut over 50 plater, og spilt med giganter som Chick Corea, Don Cherry, Mari Boine, Keith Jarrett og Bill Frisell.<br />
* Hans samarbeid med vokalkvartetten The Hilliard Ensemble er spesielt populære. 1994s <em>Officium</em> har solgt over 700.000 eksemplarer.</p>

Simple Acoustic Trio</strong>.</a> <strong>“En toda la historia del jazz en nunca he conocido una banda como ésta”, proclamaba orgulloso el trompetista polaco Tomasz Stanko</strong> con motivo de su grabación “Soul of Things” en el sello ECM de 2001, y motivo de la unión de estos tres jóvenes músicos al ya aclamado Stanko como uno de los mejores trompetistas de Polonia. La historia del trío empieza en 1990, cuando Marcin Wasilewski y Slawomir Kurkiewicz, dos estudiantes de 15 años de la escuela de música Koszalin, se juntan a tocar Jazz. Marcin tuvo formación clásica y posteriormente se interesó por el Jazz, “empecé a escuchar cintas de mi padre de Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea y Herbie Hancock, un día encontré una cinta de video de un concierto de Keith Jarrett en Japón, que le rogué a mi madre que me la comprara, y recuerdo verla diariamente durante año y medio”, el pianista polaco estuvo completamente hipnotizado con la música del pianista norteamericano. En 1993 se une a ellos Michal Miskiewicz configurando definitivamente el trío, y debutan con el nombre de Simple Acoustic Trío con el que son premiados en su país, publicando varios discos en sellos locales, comenzando por el titulado Habanera, de 2000.</p>

Manfred Eicher, productor de sonido y propietario del sello, se encargó de “suavizar” el toque del piano y crear un “ambiente” para la grabación. Nada más publicarse “Trio” ganan directamente el premio Quarterly Prize of the German Record Critics, llegando su eco hasta la crítica estadounidense. Su segundo y hasta ahora último disco es “January”, publicado en 2007, e incluye composiciones de Gary Peacock y Carla Bley. Los dos discos de Marcin Wasilewski Trío destacan por la sutileza de los tres intérpretes, la limpieza del piano, el contrabajo y el “toque” de percusión, que recuerda a la genialidad de otros tríos como el mítico de Bill Evans Trío en el Village Vanguard, subyaciendo al tiempo el recuerdo de Jarrett. En 2008 se enrolan en una larga serie de actuaciones, continuando su colaboración con Stanko y el percusionista Manu Katché perteneciente también al sello ECM.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>E sad, šta se dešava kad postaneš zavistan od slušanja muzike, određene muzike, određene grupe ljudi, na određenom mestu zvanom MySpace? Pa, u većini slučajeva ne desi se ništa! Neki ljudi te čudno gledaju &#8211; kao MySpace?! ti si tamo? to još postoji? Ili možda slože neku facu gađenja, ili najbolje &#8211; nemaju nikakav stav prema tom mestu i jednostavno te pitaju šta slušaš. Osim drugih ljudi, i svih bitnih i nebitnih stvari koje se njima mogu prikačiti, ono što se svakako dešava jeste da je nekako neophodno da ste online i da ste na MySpace stranici dotične grupe ljudi koja svira. Kad se sve poređa, zarad muzike najviše trpim, pa onda nisu problem ni ljudi i ćudi, ni MyS., ni online u potkrovlju, ni konstantno kliktanje da se isključi reklama, ili da se ponovo pusti pesma. No, veliki je problem kad po navici, dobroj i zdravoj navici slušanaj onog što voliš, shvatiš da neće da može! MySpace se sruši, zabaguje, blokira&#8230; nešto, svašta i ti ostaneš bez muzike! Uf! Grozna jedna stvar. Užasna.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><span style="color:#003300;">M</span>ia nonna, a <span style="color:#800000;">70</span> anni e con un principio di <span style="color:#333399;">Altzheimer</span>, riusciva a riconoscere i <span style="color:#ff6600;">Pink Floyd.</span> Li riconosceva dalla chitarra, quel suono languido e sognante della Strat di Gilmour dal &#8216;70 in poi. Certo, non avrebbe mai riconosciuto &#8220;Run like hell&#8221;, e neanche &#8220;Set the controls&#8221;, ma poco importa. Non sapeva neanche <span style="color:#008000;">chi</span> fossero i PF, ma li sapeva riconoscere.</p>
<p>I musicisti riconoscibili a primo orecchio sono parecchi, ma non così tanti come si potrebbe pensare. Soprattutto in questi ultimi anni, da quando l&#8217;evoluzione tecnica degli strumenti si è un po&#8217; fermata, i suoni dei vari strumentisti tendono ad assomigliarsi o, se preferite, a contaminarsi fino a non essere più &#8220;distintivi&#8221;. Penso invece a <span style="color:#008080;">Mark Knopfler</span>, a <span style="color:#800000;">Jimi Hendrix</span>, ma anche a <span style="color:#993366;">Coltrane </span>e <span style="color:#333300;">Keith Jarrett,</span> o a <span style="color:#800000;">Chris Botti</span>. Musicisti riconoscibili più nel <span style="color:#008080;">modo</span> di suonare che nel sound del loro strumento.</p>
<p><span style="color:#993300;">Manu Katche</span> fa parte di questa ristretta cerchia di musicisti, quelli che si riconoscono da come suonano. Che stia accompagnando <span style="color:#008000;">Sting</span>, <em>shaking two trees </em>con<span style="color:#000080;"> Peter Gabriel</span> o seguendo le orme mediorientali con  <span style="color:#993300;">Jan Garbarek</span> e<span style="color:#ff00ff;"> Usted Ali Khan,</span> il tocco di Katche è percepibile, è palpabile, è un&#8217;impronta digitale che lascia su tutto ciò che tocca. Impresa difficile per un batterista, soprattutto per uno che ama lavorare in campi molto diversi tra loro.</p>

<p>Come spesso capita ai ricercati session-men la discografia solista di Katche non è vasta, ma ricca di collaborazioni. In <span style="color:#993366;">Neighborhood</span>, primo capitolo della sua carriera solista datato 2005, ci sono molti nomi noti che &#8211; sintomaticamente &#8211; condividono la copertina col leader. In effetti nel disco sono i fiati di Garbarek e Stanko, insieme al pianoforte di Wasilewski, a comandare, ma è senza dubbio il tocco di Manu Katche il filo conduttore, la base che da sostegno e visibilità a quelli che, dopo un ascolto attento, risultano essere davvero<span style="color:#003300;"> ospiti.</span> Ospiti perché sembra che Manu li abbia invitati in casa propria, offrendo loro di accompagnarlo in ciò che sa fare meglio. E&#8217; un disco<span style="color:#0000ff;"> rarefatto,</span> che sa di rispetto e complicità. Una rimpatriata tra amici che anziché sfogare nell&#8217;eccesso e nel rimpianto preferisce gustare il piacere di stare insieme, come quei discorsi tra amici veri che si iniziano e non c&#8217;è nemmeno bisogno di finire, perché tutti quanti sanno quello che si voleva dire.</p>
<p><span style="color:#993366;">Melodicamente perfetto</span>, emotivamente appagante. Se Manu Katche voleva sottolineare una volta per tutte qual è il suo stile non poteva scegliere un modo migliore.</p>

<p>My question for today has to do with whether you guys think fills should be consistent.  By using the word &#8220;consistent&#8221; in reference to &#8220;fill,&#8221; I by no means intend to imply that your fills would ever be<em> <span style="font-style:normal;">i</span></em>nconsistent <em>in the sense of being sloppy in their execution or badly timed</em>.  I am instead wondering about whether or not the fills in a given tune (pop/rock tune, that is) should be the same in every performance of that song.  For instance, it is generally expected that a rock drummer will be consistent with the GROOVES in a song (a certain groove for the verse, a certain groove for the chorus, etc).  Every time you perform that song, the grooves should be the correctly played and correctly placed.  But should the FILLS be that way too?</p>
<p>Many drummers in rock history have established themselves with &#8220;signature&#8221; fills&#8230; fills that function almost like a melodic hook in the song (e.g. Nirvana&#8217;s &#8220;Smells Like Teen Spirit&#8221; intro fill, or the standard Motown fill on &#8220;Ain&#8217;t To Proud To Beg&#8221;).  But at the same time, most of my favorite drummers seem to regard fills as an improvising moment, playing different fills at every performance (John Bonham, Steve Jordan, Stewart Copeland, Manu Katche&#8230; to name a few).</p>
<p>I realized a few years ago that the &#8220;improvised&#8221; approach was my default approach when I played a short tour with a band that some of my friends are in called <a href="http://www.myspace.com/pivitplex" target="_blank">Pivitplex</a>.  I played on all the tracks from their 2006 release &#8220;The King In  A Rookery,&#8221; and about a year later they were between drummers and called me for some subbing.  I re-learned all my parts for the songs and showed up to the first gig and everything went great, except afterward the guitarist was commenting that I hadn&#8217;t played all the fills verbatim from the record.  I was really surprised that he had expected me to &#8211; I certainly never planned on it.  He wasn&#8217;t mad or anything, because I played fills that were in the same vein as the ones from the record, so everything sounded fine.  But the fact that he was so familiar with the album, combined with the band requiring their previous drummer to learn the fills exactly, meant that he had all the album fills memorized and noticed when I didn&#8217;t do them exactly the same.  It turns out that he defaults to a &#8220;do-the-same-fill-every-time&#8221; strategy, while I default to a &#8220;copy-key-fills-but-improvise-all-the-rest&#8221; approach.</p>
<p>I have since had a few gigs where I&#8217;ve needed to do the fills EXACTLY, and it&#8217;s hard.  I guess it just challenges the memory a lot more.  But then again, drummers who don&#8217;t usually improvise seem to find improvised fills to be difficult as well.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p style="text-align:justify;">Hier soir, Manu Katché et Thomas Dutronc étaient sur la scène de notre festival &#8220;Orléans Jazz 2008&#8243;, lors d&#8217;une soirée parrainée par La République du Centre. Après un concert de Manu Katché (qui a joué avec les plus grands :  Peter Gabriel, Sting, Michel Petruccianni &#8230;), Thomas Dutronc nous a livré un concert étonnant par sa qualité et sa mise en scène( signée Mathieu Chedid). Le jazz manouche allié à un humour décalé, sur fond d&#8217;ombres chinoises et de cartes postales de vacances projetées sur un drap, créent immédiatement une proximité avec le public.<br />
Thomas Dutronc n&#8217;est pas juste le fils de son père : sa dextérité à la guitare et la qualité des musiciens qui l&#8217;accompagnent nous font rapidement oublier un &#8220;Paris s&#8217;éveille&#8221; des années 60 pour passer à un &#8220;J&#8217;aime plus Paris&#8221; très actuel.<br />

<p>Jack Peñate wird am 2. September 1984 als Jack Fabian Peñate in London als Sohn englisch-spanischer Eltern geboren. Er besucht die Alleyn&#8217;s School, wo er zusammen mit Felix White (der später bei The Maccabees spielt) die Band &#8220;Jack&#8217;s Basement&#8221; gründet. An der Universität in London studiert er ein Jahr klassische Musik, bevor er sich auf seine Solo-Karriere konzentriert. Mit seinen Freunden Joel Porter (Bass) und Alex Robins (Schlagzeug) spielt er sich durch die Londoner Clubszene, bevor er 2006 seine erste Single &#8220;Second, Minute Or Hour&#8221; bei Young Turks veröffentlicht, deren limitierte Auflage von 1.000 Platten (jede einzelne mit einem anderen Polaraidfoto von Peñate ausgestattet) an einem Tag ausverkauft ist. Er bekommt einen Vertrag bei XL Recordings und veröffentlicht die EP <em>Spit At Stars</em>. Seine nächste Single &#8220;Torn On The Platform&#8221; schafft es in die UK-Top 10. Das regelmäßige Musik-Event &#8211; immer am letzten Samstag des Monats ab 22.30 Uhr auf arte &#8211; steht unter dem Zeichen der persönlichen Begegnung und der Liebe zur Musik. Komoderatorin ist Alice Tumler, die die Sendung auf Deutsch und Französisch moderiert.<br />
Neben einem nie da gewesenen Konzert-Event bietet die Sendung auch einen Blick hinter die Kulissen, im Stil eines &#8220;Making of&#8221;: Gefilmt werden neben dem Backstage auch Gespräche und Proben, die den Zuschauer am Alltag der Musiker und Bühnentechniker aus nächster Nähe teilhaben lassen.
