Among Linux forums, Linux users are constantly being accused of elitism. They’re up on their h

Among Linux forums, Linux users are constantly being accused of elitism. They’re up on their high horses, secure in their comfort with Linux and other Unix-like operating systems, looking down their pointy noses on the hapless noobs who just want their computers to “just work.” Poor Joe Sixpack, trying to free himself from proprietary tyranny, is constantly being chased away from Linux by such superior elitists, who make him feel like an idiot just for asking an innocent question.

What yields such charges of elitism? More often than not, it’s the simple suggestion that the asker of a given question should resort to the documents which were written precisely for the purpose of answering such questions: the manuals. In other words, people who really cared about Joe Sixpack would spoon-feed him like a newborn baby; hateful people who point him to the answers to not only his specific question, but also to most other questions in the computerized universe, are elitists. To this, I can only respond with one short, trite phrase:

Read the f@#$ing manual.[1]

Seriously. Read it. That’ll probably answer your question. If it doesn’t, Google it. Google is your friend.[2] If you don’t know how to get to the manual, go to a command line and type “man command“. That’s it; your manual will come up. Read it. If it doesn’t work, as it very occasionally doesn’t, then once again, Google it. You’ll get a manual shortly. Once you’ve read it, and you actually understand the program you’re trying to use, you probably won’t have a question anymore. You’ll have educated yourself to know something, rather than simply doing something without knowing what or why. And isn’t that better? Isn’t it better to learn than simply to ape what some ubergeek tells you on a help forum?

If you’ve done all this, and you still can’t figure it out, please feel free to ask the question. Geeks and hackers throughout the world will be happy to help you find the solution. Remember that we hang around in help forums answering questions on our own time. Nobody’s paying us for it (most of the time); we’re doing it because we like the program and we like helping people. What we don’t like is people who demand we solve their every problem without them ever making any effort to solve it themselves, or even to understand what it is. That tends to make us a bit ornery. And with good reason.

You see, those of us who are called “geeks” or “hackers” didn’t become such by opening our heads up and letting people pour stuff into them. We got that way by study and effort. Some of us learned in college; some of us never went to college; some of us went to college, but learned little about computers there, gaining this knowledge on our own. But all of us value self-teaching and self-study, with deference to the masters when one cannot find the answers on one’s own. The deeper one gets into computers, the more one will require such consultation. As a corollary, however, the shallower one is in computers, the more rarely one will require it. If you’re just a hapless noob looking for help, then I can more or less guarantee that the answer to your question is easy, and that you’ll find it in the manual. But even if it winds up not being there, at least do us the courtesy of looking first, please.

We’re the ones who wrote those manuals, see. We don’t just write software; we write documentation for it. We work hard at it, and try to include all the normal situations as well as any unusual ones that have been reported to us. As such, your problem is probably in there; in the unlikely event that you’ve found an edge case that nobody else has noticed yet, then we want to know about it. But we don’t want to answer the same question thousands of times when we’ve already answered it in a thorough and complete way by putting it in the manual.

Nobody expects to drive a car without taking a driving class. Nobody expects to wire a house without studying up on electronics. Nobody expects to fix their dishwasher without learning a little plumbing. Yet for some reason everybody expects their computer to sit up and beg whenever they point at it and tell it what they want it to do. The computer is an immensely powerful machine that will do many wonderful things, but one must first learn how to tell it what to do. Sometimes that’s pretty easy; sometimes it takes significant study; sometimes it’s deep magic that only the very greatest masters can manage. In no case, however, can it be done without learning something, and the place to learn that something is, more often than not, the manual.

People who call us elitists for saying things like this are completely missing the point. We’re not elitists. Elitists would want to maintain their superior knowledge and keep everyone else dependent upon them. We’re doing precisely the opposite; we’re helping other people obtain the same knowledge we have, from the same sources that we have it. A truer egalitarianism is difficult to imagine.

It’s the difference between giving a man a fish and teaching him to fish. Is it elitist to teach a man how to provide for himself, or to perpetually infantilize him by giving him everything he needs and pretending that it takes no effort for somebody else to get it?

The computer is a tool, and like all tools it takes knowledge, study, and experience to use it effectively. When we refer you to a manual or to a search engine for an answer, we’re not doing it because we think you’re stupid, or because we think we’re better than you. We’re doing it to teach you how to find the answers yourself. That’s not elitism; it’s humanitarianism, pure and simple.

Praise be to Christ the King!

1. This saying is frequently abbreviated to “RTFM,” which is variably rendered as “read the f@#$ing manual,” “read the fun manual,” “read the fine manual,” or something similar, depending on the speaker.
2. This saying is frequently abbreviated “GIYF.” Truer words in the computer world could hardly be imagined.
3. Please, also, learn how to ask a question correctly should the manual or the Internet fail to yield a helpful solution. This will go a long way to showing that you’ve filled your end of the computer help bargain; people will respect you, and thus be more interested in helping you.

I have read a lot of manuals I mean I have read manuals to items i don’t even own and probably never will. In fact give me a manual and Ill probably read it right away. The reason behind this behavior is deeply rooted in me due to the fact that every time my dad brought home a new device he tossed the manual to the side and tried to figure out how the thing worked for himself. After about 20min of tampering with the device he was ready to give up. And since I had been sitting besides him the whole time reading the manual I knew he were going to say: Christoffer do the installation or Can you give me the manual. So while he got the first try to use it I got the first real use of it.

Even now after leaving home 5years ago I still get the odd call once in a while when my brothers ain’t home to help them with the installation despite not having seen the item in question. Or even worse not even having read the manual.

[READ & WORKED ON: October 21, 2009] Replacing bulbs

Don’t worry, I’m not going to review the manual. I wanted to point out the hilarious warning that accompanies the changing of a light bulb.

So the headlight on our 2004 Jetta burnt out. When I was about 17 I changed a headlight on my Ford Fairmont (a great big glass thing that was the entire headlamp). It was time-consuming but fairly easy. So I figured how hard could it be now?

I’m mechanically inclined (I built a chicken coop after all) but I’m not a car guy. I guess you could say I’m afraid to tamper with anything that I drive everyday and that holds my family most days. But a light bulb? I had to at least try.

The friendly owner’s manual says:

Replacing bulbs
It is becoming increasingly more and more difficult to replace vehicle light bulbs since in many cases, other parts of the car must first be removed before you are able to get to the bulb. This applies especially to the light bulbs in the front of the car which you can only reach through the engine compartment.

A HUGE WARNING BOX!

H7 bulbs are pressurized and can explode when being changed. Potential risk of injury!

On vehicles equipped with gas discharge bulbs life-threatening injuries can result from improper handling of the high-voltage portions of such lamps!

For your safety, we recommend that you have your authorized VOLKSWAGEN dealer replace any bulbs for you, since your dealer has necessary tools, the correct bulbs and expertise.

ANOTHER HUGE WARNING BOX!
Before you check anything in the engine compartment, always read and heed all WARNINGS on page 34.

Adjusting headlights
Special tools and expertise are required to adjust the headlights. For your safety we recommend that you have your authorized VOLKSWAGEN dealer check and adjust the headlights when necessary.

That’s a little repetitive. But Wow! You’d have to be CRAZY to try and change this light bulb. Or would you?

I Googled it, and got this very helpful Wiki Answers page.

I bought the bulb at my local Hapi Auto Parts store (sadly no picture available, but what a great store!). It was not the huge glass block like from years ago, it was a small halogen bulb.

I followed her instructions and, aside from pausing to run back inside to get a flat head screwdriver (which I needed to pry something off) the whole thing went without a hitch. The bulb was replaced in about five minutes.

I guess you can’t believe everything you read.

Surfing around the net this morning, in a frantic bid to catch up on my reading – a technical generalist’s job is ever shifting – I found some sites that offer tools and information that I just HAD TO SHARE, because let’s face it – when you find a treasure that is FREE, you ought to share the wealth! And these tools are FREE, no requirements to join something or sign up for something – just plain old free.

My fave of today is at: MakeUseOf.com. This particular posting has 15 .pdf manuals to download that range from Audiophile guides to free music and services, to Linux for Dummies. Literally something for everyone there, and all concise and well-written.

A service that my co-worker, Afsheen, turned me on to is SocialOomph.com – it is not a pretty site, nor is it especially easy to navigate – BUT – it allows you to automate some of the Twitter activities that busy professionals might like – for example – you can set an automated thanks for a follow; you can set to automatically follow people who follow you; and most brilliantly of all – you can set up scheduled Tweets! That is what I call ROCK AND ROLL!

If you are looking for a free alternative to Photoshop, check out Photoscape it is freeware with lots of power. Not completely as versatile as Photoshop, but for the amateur – it is a pretty powerful tool – and allows photo collage and layering.

I will post stuff as I find it – drop me a line if you are looking for something in particular and if I stumble on it in my virtual travels, I’ll share!

MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT GOING TO VIOLATE NONCOMPETE OR CONFIDENTIALITY OBLIGATIONS WITH YOUR NEW BUSINESS: Check your agreements, policies or your former employers, and the common and statutory authorities to make sure you’re in the clear.

Tip #10

PROTECT YOUR IP AND GOODWILL: Have your founding employees sign NDA’s, proprietary rights agreements, and noncompetition agreements. You can’t get investment dollars without these and it gets harder and harder to get these agreements in place as time goes on. And, prior to having them your business is always in jeopardy of disappearing you’re your people “voting with their feet.”

BE CAREFUL NOT TO VIOLATE WAGE LAWS: Accruing salaries pending funding is not legal in Massachusetts. It is better to structure these as loans or ongoing 1099 consultative arrangements without a personal obligation to pay by the entrepreneur.

Tip 6: Stock Deals

ADD UP THE STOCK: Do not promise too many people too much stock. Seriously, it happens. It’s illegal. On the business side, you need to carefully consider how much stock you’ll need to get through the rounds of financing you may need to become successful.

This book by Scott Parry starts with “How to Use This Book,” which sets a great tone for the rest of the information. The writing style is to-the-point and packed (perhaps even over-packed) with information that’s relevant to today’s training professional.I find it especially useful for beginning trainers or training managers, but seasoned folks may only want it for a refresher or two.Contents include the reasons for linking training to performance improvement, training needs analysis, designing and developing a training program, and classroom management / facilitation skills. If you take it in chunks, the information is managable–if you try to read it all at one sitting, you may feel overwhelmed.Generally, it’s very practical and worth putting on your expense account.

Product Description
This book is designed to provide training guidancethrough a wealth of readings, self-assessments, planning sheets, training tools, and other forms of learning exercises. These materialshave proved to be effective in sharpening the skills of thousands ofinstructors and course designers who have participated in more than400 train-the-trainer workshops that the author has conducted over theyears. The emphasis is on teaching in order to make changes inbehavior.
This book consists of 40 chapters divided into nine sections. At leastone learning exercise appears in each chapter. The chapters arearranged in the natural flow of activities associated with thepreparation and instruction of a new course. The sections are:Training-The Key to Performance Improvement; Analyzing the Need forTraining; Designing a Training Program; Developing a Training Program;Sharpening Your Instructional Skills; Teaching Inductively andDeductively; Using Training Tools Effectively; Transferring BehaviorFrom the Workshop to the Workplace; and Measuring the Effectiveness ofTraining.
Workshops and courses on human resource development can benefit fromthe activities and exercises in these chapters. This book can also beused as a self-study program for individuals who wish to sharpen theirinstructional competencies.

Primavera" width="129" height="159" />
Dr. Jurgenne H. Primavera

She fell in love with the mangroves. And since then she protected the mangroves like a true knight protecting his king.

Dr. Jurgenne H. Primavera spent her time studying mangroves and discovered why mangroves population in the Philippines was declining—the major culprit is the conversion of mangrove areas to brackish water fishponds. According to Dr. primavera, the greatest mangrove loss has been due to large-scale development of bangus (milkfish) ponds at 4,000 to 5,000 hectares per year from the 1950s to the 1960s. also, coastal communities, as well as bakeries and wood-fired sugar mills, depend on mangroves for fuel. Mangrove areas are also converted to agriculture and salt ponds or cut down to give way to reclaimed lands for ports and commercial areas.

Because of her stand on mangroves, Primavera became the only Filipino scientist to receive an honorary doctorate degree from the Stockholm University in Sweden, capping more than 10 years of mangroves studies. Since 1997, Primavera has worked on two mangrove sites in Aklan as field laboratories. These are the patches of mangroves in Ibajay town and Buswang in Kalibo town.

She wrote more than 60 scientific articles, review papers, manuals, book chapters and technical reports, and co-authored 20 papers. Many of the subjects touched on impacts of fish and shrimp farming, the ecological value of mangroves, marine conservation and management, and livelihood opportunities from mangroves.

Dr. Primavera is currently a researcher at the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center in the Philippines. She holds a doctorate degree in marine Science from the University of the Philippines.

Did you notice how many web site’s or blogs are talking about First date?

How to? How not to? What to say? What not to say? How to dress? How not to dress? ….

Can you imagine yourself how you trying to remember all those things and act according to the “manual”? And what is the point of that?
Maybe those “Manuals” work in that moment or few hours, but if you have “deserved” your second date (and I am sure it’s not because you behaved according to the “Manual”), than your real YOU will start to appear slowly…

Point is: Behave like you are on your first date. If you find each other on that level, that’s it! There is a chance for “happily ever after” if you don’t: he/she is not “the One”. So what? Like they say:

“You have to kiss many frogs to find the prince”
If you didn’t “recognize” each other on the first or second date, or third date, you will never “recognize” each other. Not in this life Let it go! That doesn’t mean you are not good for her/him. That only mean he/she is not “the One”. Seek further and forget “Manuals” if you want to find the real One and be accepted like you really are.

I never had an Atari when I was growing up. My aunt bought my sisters and me a Texas Instruments computer instead. I didn’t know the difference. I was eight years old. I pretty much just liked pressing the buttons and pretending to play library. (Don’t ask.) My sisters really liked the “TI-Invaders” game (the TI rip-off of Space Invaders). But my favorite game — if I did actually play a game — was a little hide-’n-seek-ish type novelty called “Hunt the Wumpus.” I think I maybe just liked saying the word “Wumpus.” You try it. “Wumpus.” See? It’s fun, right? Though, to this day, I still have no clue what a “wumpus” is. Other than being something with freakishly large teeth and two awkwardly long arms with claw-hands.

Anyway, Texas Instruments evolved into more of a calculator giant. Atari, however, remains the top retro gaming device. Plus, they had a pretty rad logo. Texas Instruments was pretty banal. I mean, a silhouette of the state of Texas? Whoa. How mind-blowingly creative. Pff. So… for this installment of Throwback Thursday, I give you… Atari.

Hej,

I am wondering if someone took the time for writing a user friendly manual for beginning end-users of the IBM Blog template?

The ‘using this application’ document does not support a good guidance for end-users.

For now I have just made an abstract of what is available in the Notes 8 Client Help.nsf ( Link ) and an abstract from posts on Steve Castledines Blog ( Link ), the last one is more for application administrators or (web) designers.

But in case you have a friendly description of the template including some screen-dumps I would be thankful if you sharing it!

There are many things to think about in managing and starting a business. In your rush to stay on to

There are many things to think about in managing and starting a business. In your rush to stay on top of business, some important things can be overlooked or neglected, such a business insurance. No matter the size of your business, you need some form of insurance protection.

Subscribe in a reader

Don’t let your coverage lapse/ terminate ’cause you never know when an emergency will come. Insurance is important for everything in your life, from your home, to your life and your car. Knowing that you have that security blanket there at all times, gives you peace of mind.

Check out my post called “In Business, Expect The Unexpected”

Even if you have a home-based business you might want to consider getting insurance for your business. Sometimes your house or apartment insurance may not cover your business equipment or losses.

You could get an add-on to your basic homeowners insurance policy such as a homeowners policy endorsement or an in-home business policy.

There are many things that insurance policies won’t cover so check with your insurance agent to see what you will & won’t get. Some insurance policies can be tailored to fit your needs.

Sometimes the amount of & type of business that you do can influence your eligibility for various types of insurance. Some policies are more expensive than others. Some include everything and others don’t.

There are many things that lead to the success and longevity of your small business. sometimes you just have to lay out the extra cash to benefit your business down the road. It’s best to make small payments now than to make HUGE payments later.

So which would you rather do: Pay Now Or Pay Later?

No matter what type of policy you choose to use for your business, the important thing is that you evaluate your business practices and needs, and take steps to protect them.
