It will be my last, pero susulitin ko yun nang sobra. Ipinagdarasal ko lang na bigyan ako ni God ng konting oras because I don’t want to rush things. Late na nga ako palagi eh, haha. Yung mga ganito, dapat pinaghahandaan.

Education: Analyzing the status of math & science education By Angelica Katheryn G. Carballo The

Education:

Analyzing the status of math & science education

By Angelica Katheryn G. Carballo

The lines on her forehead and the gray hairs on her head show me how many students she has taught, how many classrooms she has entered, how many years she has served. Meet Mrs. Jane Reodica, a Grace IV Science teacher in one of the public schools in Quezon City.

She has been teaching for 27 years, in the same school, teaching the same subject, and, pitifully, almost the same curriculum.

“Teaching is one of the noblest professions, partly because of the wisdom and knowledge you impart to the next generation and partly because of the sacrifices you make for the next generation,” she quips.

Like many public school teachers, she has withstood the low salary grade, overcrowded classrooms, undisciplined, and uninterested students.

But the most painful ordeal is the seemingly lack of concern by the government for public school teachers like her.

Seeing through the pain on her voice, one can conclude that only sheer love for teaching and the commitment to stay true, to her oath are the only motivation that keeps her from transferring to another industry. It is her persistence to teach every student that comes her way that wakes her up before sunrise, even if her body is still aching from the previous day’s work.

“Science is specially difficult to teach. Some children are simply not interested in the subject, and those who are interested have to make do with the backdated and improvised equipment in our rooms. Even our Science room hasn’t changed a bit for, like, 10 years.”

This story is not exclusive to Mrs. Reodica, or the school where she works. It’s the same scenario almost every Science teacher in a public school face every day.

Setting the Classroom Setting

Needless to say, education is a key to national progress and should be a top priority of every state. The 42,430 public schools where a big chunk of the student population is enrolled, should be given more attention. A Department of Education (DepEd) website showed that in School Year (SY) 2006-2007, out of the 6.36 million students enrolled in the secondary level, 5.07 million or 80 % are enrolled in public schools. Only one-fifth can afford private education. A bigger percentage of grade-schoolers attend public school, 12.096 million out of 13.145 million.

For 2009, DepEd’s budget allotment is P167.94 billion, the biggest among government agencies. Yet, not enough, according to DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus.

This rate falls below certain standards showed by the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). DepEd budget from 2001 to 2007 was at 2.07 – 2.53 % of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP),

“The norm, the international standard, is at six percent of GDP,” Lapus said.

In a separate interview, Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea, Mapua Institute of Technology president and Congressional Commission on Science and technology and Engineering (COMSTE) Education Committee chairman agreed that “Education gets the biggest slice, but not enough to match (how much) our neighbors are spending,” he said.

A Senate Economic Planning Office paper released in 2006 indicated that the Philippines has the second largest pupil-teacher ratio among ASEAN countries, next to Cambodia.

Government spending for secondary education dropped from 1999 to 2004. In 2004, it allotted only 3.2% of GDP for education while Malaysia spent more than double.

Achiles’ Heel

Ask a student what is his least favorite subject.Chances are you’ll get Math or Science for an answer. DepEd data show that achievement rate of fourth year students in Math dropped from 50.70% in SY 2005-2006 to 47.82% in SY 2006-2007. The decline also happened in Science, from 39.49% to 37.98% in the same period.

A Science and Education Institute study on Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) in 2003 showed that Philippines’ 8th grade (2nd year high school) students’ skills and competencies in Math ranked a pitiful 42nd out of 46 participating countries while the Philippine 4th grade students placed 23rd out of 25 participating countries.

The 2004 executive report on Philippine TIMSS showed that in four years since the Third International Mathematics and Science Study Repeat (TIMSS-R) in 1999, only seven regions showed improvements in Math competencies among the 8th grade students. Results of the student achievement test indicate very poor performance in each content domain at this early education stage.

The problem seems to be double-edged, with the students’ lack of interest to the lack of professionals who can teach Math and Science. Those who teach Math and Science in public schools are not Math and Science majors, but Education majors that may lack expertise in the subjects.

There have been calls to revamp the teaching system and upgrade teachers’ skills.

COMSTE sought to answer that problem by formulating a program for Education students who seek to teach Math and Science.

“(We should) give a Science focus to laboratory schools to colleges of education of SUCs (state universities and colleges),” said Vea. “Colleges of Education have laboratory schools where student teachers practice teaching. What we want to do is just to give them a bent toward the sciences.”

COMSTE is also pushing for the revival of the scholarship program for teachers who want to pursue further studies. This was first introduced under a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) program several years back.

He is convinced of the program’s success, stating the increase in number of Ph.Ds in local colleges and universities, including University of the Philippines, Mapua, and De La Salle University.

Another COMSTE recommendation is to attract non-education students to teach. This targets graduates of BS Biology, BS Chemistry, BS Physics to enter the academe.

As of now, there are no proactive ways to attract them to a teaching career.

The Philippine education industry is in a tug of war with other countries that offer higher salaries to Filipino teachers. Countries like US and China value Filipino teachers highly and may pay them up to 10 times more their monthly salaries in the Philippines.

In the process, many of the better Science and Math teachers are lost in the roster. In Maryland, a Filipino teacher is offered an annual salary of $43, 481 (roughly P1.8 million). A public school teacher here with a Salary Grade 10 receives a gross pay of only P9,939 a month.

There have been moves to upscale the salaries of public school teachers.

House Bill 800 or the “Act Upgrading the Minimum Salary Grade Level of Public School Teachers in the Elementary And Secondary Levels from Grade 10 to 15″ is geared towards providing public school teachers a much-needed wage hike.

Similarly, Senate Bill No. 2408 or the “Educators in Basic Education Compensation Act, ” already passed for the second reading last year, will provide an additional P9,000 increase in the monthly salaries of public school teachers as well as non-teaching personnel.

A medical allowance support of at least P1,000 will be given for check-ups and other medical expenses and an annual Magna Carta bonus to answer for the unpaid benefits due to teachers under the Magna Carta for Public School Teacher’s Act.

Locally, there are other industries that give better compensation than what teaching in a public school can give. An engineering graduate, who can earn as much as P50,000 a month working in a firm would less likely opt for a teaching job.

“Compared to the salaries they might receive in non-education fields, its a far cry,” Vea admits.

As another puts it, “We can only bank on the person’s love and passion to teach, but we cannot always go to that reason alone.”

Feeding the Machine

Another problem that needs further attention is how to feed the scholarship programs with scholars. Seemingly less and less students are bent on getting a Science-related degree.

According to COMSTE, in the basic level, there is a decreasing trend in interest in science-oriented education despite the establishment of science high schools. In the tertiary level, less than half of the enrollees in the country are in science & technology (S&T)-related courses, with the number of graduates remaining at the minimum.

Analyzing the facts presented by DepEd, elementary achievement rate in Grade 6 Math is 60.29% in SY 2006-2007, up by 6.63% compared to 53.66% posted in SY 2005-2006. Also, Science achievement rate in the same grade level rose from 46.77% in SY 2005-2006 to 51.58% in SY 2006-2007. That boasts an increase of 4.81% in their scores.

But in the same report, high school achievement rate in Science and Math declined in the same period. This is an alarming manifestation of children’s loss of interest in Science and Math as they move further in the academic ladder.

To answer this issue, COMSTE recommends reviving government’s Engineering and Science Education Project in the 1990s where 110 public non-science high schools identified for their better performance offered extra Science subjects specially for students interested in Science and Math.

“But the program has not been sustained,” said Vea. He suggests institutionalizing this program or legislating its enactment is seen to keep the project going for a long time, even transcending changes in the administration.

“The program should be immune from the changes of administration,” he said. “If you have bright students, you just have to give them more material, without necessarily having to change the curriculum. It’s like an honors’ section.

“Make the subjects more intensive. It may not include more hours. It may just mean your giving them higher level material.”

These schools do not have to be turned into Science schools.

This move doesn’t have to be legislated, though, although legislation may make implementation more permanent.

“We’re just picking up from where the former World Bank-financed $85 million program of the 90s has left off.”

Science high schools, particularly the Philippine Science High School (PSHS), have their own way of giving back to the society the Math and Science experts it needs.

PSHS graduates are required to take Science or Math-related courses in college, or they should pay for their PSHS education. Other science high schools, though not as restrictive as PSHS, encourage their students to enter into Science and Math related courses.

Winning awards, but lagging behind

The golden harvest the Philippines has enjoyed over the last few years in Math provides a ray of light in the seemingly bleak landscape. In the 2008 Philippine-Australian Mathematics Competition (PAMC), four of the medalist came from the Philippines. The PAMC is the biggest international competition in the world, with more than 500,000 students from at least 30 competing countries and territories.

The contest was conducted through correspondence in testing centers around the world. It is only awarded to approximately one out of 10,000 PAMC participants. Last year is the first time that the Philippines had four PAMC medalists.

Ironically, the Philippines ranked third and fourth—to the last—among the countries which participated in the 1999 and 2003 TIMMS, respectively.

The study was topped by Singapore.

Despite this dismal performance, Prof. Peter Taylor, executive director of the Australian Mathematics Trust, lauded the Filipino students’ skills in Mathematics, which he said is comparable with those of students from the Asia-Pacific region, and is even “close to Singapore.”

COMSTE, however, begs to disagrree, stating that the main reason why we rank low in international tests in the secondary level is because many Math and Science teachers in public high schools are not Math and Science majors. There are more teachers with baccalaureate degrees in Education than in Math and Science.

Even in the competitiveness level, the Philippines slid down from 47 in 2001 to 77 in 2007 out of 117 countries that were evaluated, which COMSTE attributed to the many problems of the country’s basic education system, particularly lacking in specialization in Math and Science.

Aside from reviving the World Bank (WB) program on intensified Science and Math education in 110 public high schools, Vea said it is obvious intensive Math and Science education in grade school is a must too, being the foundations of all levels of learning.

He laments the country’s lag in education now.

“Koreans learned the Philippine Science High School system. Then they went back to Korea, put more resources and did it in a better way. They got the germ of the idea here. Even the National University of Singapore recruits students from here.”

Money makes the world go round. Unfortunately, education is not an exception.

The rising cost of public education has been one of the many problems that need to be addressed.

Basic education, to be able to operate on its mammoth scale, needs the same size of money to be poured in.

Though it can benefit from private funds, it is the government that should look towards having a sustainable and developed basic education system.

“It’s the only body probably that can do this on such a scale,” Vea said.

Twenty years ago, secondary education is mostly ran by private money. Mainly because 80% of the students are enrolled in private schools, leaving only 20% to public schools. But because of the population growth and the economic crisis, the figures have shifted a full 360-degree turn.

“You have to provide a certain level of financial support because families can hardly afford the kind of education they want for their children.

“Even in tertiary level, the best school in this country spends so little compared to other countries. In 2000, for example, Thailand’s best school was spending two times more per student. The University of Malaya, three times more. India Institute of Technology, five times more. And of course, the National University of Singapore spends 24 times more. Not that if you throw in money, you solve a lot of problems, but it helps.”

Vea sees it as a tribute to our people, that despite the lack of resources, “we’re still able to produce good people which are able to work as professionals abroad and be recognized.”

But he still believes something should be done.

“That state of things cannot be made to linger, our schools will have to spend more per student in terms of everything. In terms of facilities, in terms of getting good faculty, books and other media as educational resources.”

Herding through the Grapevine

The pitiful plight of education in the country is a reflection of how we do as a country in general. Education, being one of the basic right of a child, should be given to him in its fullest and in its most complete form.

The country, being a signatory to the Millenium Development Goal, which states that “by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling,” has the responsibility to give each Filipino child the kind of education he deserves.

Education is ubiquitous in a developed society. In our aim to become an economic power, we envision the Philippines to be solving the problems of Reodica which is the first step in achieving such dream.

UE kept FEU at the bay the entire contest by dominating on both ends of the floor as they handed the

UE kept FEU at the bay the entire contest by dominating on both ends of the floor as they handed the Tams its second loss, 87-72, after a proverbial eight-game streak last night to seize solo third.

The Warriors blitzed to an early lead and never looked back behind double digit heroics UE’s troika of Pari Llagas, Elmer Espirtu and Paul Lee. Llagas finished with a game-high 24 points.

After UST’s wrecking loss to Ateneo in the earlier game, 80-70, UE shatters the two-way tie and assumes third place that would pit them anew against FEU in the semis if the current place will remain idle until the end of the eliminations.

UST, on the other hand, holds on to a precarious fourth place spot with 5-5 record, just a win and a half after La Salle who is at 4-6. The Tigers need to prevail on their remaining assigments over NU (August 30), La Salle (Sept 3), Adamson (Sept 6) and UE (September 10) to seal their standings.

The Tigers were held spellbound from the 6th minute mark of the fourth where Ateneo pulled away with the 69-62 lead from a 7-0 roll. UST inched in to within four, 70-74, with less then a minute to play on rookie Jeric Teng’s basket but the Tigers never scored then on.

&

After a crucial outing in the UAAP last night, today’s NCAA games will also be as crucial highlighted by two teams that seek to compound their bid for the coveted final semis spot, with the first three spots already occupied by the top three competitors in the league.

Arellano and Letran, who have been idle at fourth place on a identical 6-4 ledger, will take on the lowly Angeles U and Mapua respectively— two teams who have occupied the bottom of the standings since the start of the season. A much-needed win for the two teams will keep them on the hunt.

Predictions:

versus

The Sports Minded: Arellano by 15 points.

Arellano will pound the Great Danes as they will solidify their chance for a final four slot with this win. Gio Ciriacruz will have a shooting spree as AUF doesn’t have anyone besides Matt Kearney who can bang in the lane.

KC13: Arellano by 20 points.

They can’t take the Angeles U lightly knowing the guys would want a dignified exit in the league. However, expect the Chiefs to dominate the Great Danes like the have done the last time out.

On Point: Arellano by a baker’s dozen.

Look for the chiefs to come out strong, all the pressure is on their side while the danes are just playing for pride alone.

versus

The Sports Minded: Letran by 12 points.

If the Mapua show up the way thed did against the Lions last week, then this might be a game. If they don’t, put this one in the books for the Knights.

KC13: Letran by 10 points.

Despite an awful showing in their first meeting, Mapua will definitely give take a tough stand like they did against the league leaders in their last games. But still not enough to stop Letran’s scorers from pouring it in.

On Point: Letran by 12 points.

The Cardinals will make this a game early but, the Knights will pull away in the second half.Jazul wil deliver the goods with most of his shots from the outside.

San Sebastian zoomed to its 11th straight win while San Beda busted out of a slow start to notch the hardfought W in the NCAA games today.

The Stags, led by Jimbo Aquino’s 18-point peformance, remain at helm after they dealt another sorry defeat to the Perpetual Help Altas 80-70, following the 76-54 drubbing last July 23. Carl Abueva added 16 for San Sebastian.

The Lions, meanwhile, remain in close second behind San Sebastian after trouncing the Mapua Cardinals, 84-75. Thanks to Pascual’s stellar second half performance, finishing with 19 points.

On to tomorrow’s UAAP game predictions.

versus

The Sports Minded: Adamson by seven points.

Falcons will bounce back this time against the Bulldogs. No upset this time around.

KC13: NU by five points.

It’s hard to predict when you know both teams are trying so hard to stay afloat especially in this crucial part of the season. Knowing that both teams have the capability to explode, it will definitely boil down to who excecutes their plays well.

On Point: Adamson by six points.

Falcons over Bulldogs especially when Adamson just came from a big win over La Salle while NU continues to struggle.

versus

The Sports Minded: La Salle by eight points.

This is tough, three straight defeat for Franz and the gang but UP is a capable opponent. Pumaren won’t lose four in a row. If La Salle lose this one, they can kiss the final four goodbye.

KC13: La Salle by 10 points.

La Salle needs toughen up on the defensive end knowing how capable UP is, especially its shooters. The Archers desperately need to win this one to stay in contention, and something tells me Coach Franz Pumaren will not allow the boys to just lose it like that—not on his watch.

On Point: UP by five points.

Don’t hate on me when I say UP will win over DLSU this time around, Why? ’cause the Archers are just off-target as of late; they play inconsistent basketball. Meanwhile, the Maroons have the guns to fire off an upset. They are pesky on defense and streaky on offense, their big problem though, is turnovers, silly TO’s. You can limit turnovers but never inconsistency– it’s a disease.

And I think we’re in for a treat from the solid contenders San Sebastian Stags and Letran Knig

And I think we’re in for a treat from the solid contenders San Sebastian Stags and Letran Knights as they go head-to-head in the uhm, opening tiff, of tomorrow’s NCAA games! Just when I felt the need for some Stags action, they’re given a tough competitor to boot. Lucky!

Meanwhile, Arellano, who are closely knitted in the standings with 4-3, try to improve their bid for a final four slot as they take on the tailender Mapua Cardinals (1-7) in the ‘main event’ set at 4pm.

Anyway. The Stags, who are entrenched atop the heap with scorching eight straight wins, stake their clean slate against capable Knights (5-3), who–on the other hand–are gunning for their 6th win to stave off a possible two-way jam at fourth place with the Chiefs. That is if ‘Little Chief’ delivers again.

Predictions:

versus

The Sports Minded: Letran by five points.

Baste will end the first round with a loss in their column. I feel Letran will make a huge upset tomorrow. Jazul and Guevarra will both have their A-games.

KC13: San Sebastian by single digits.

Jimbo Aquino is playing probably the best basketball of his life and so are the Stags. Aquino will just be as unstoppable as usual, taking charge when he’s needed to. The Stags will wrap up the first round via sweep, they just need to keep their winning formula intact like they have done so the last eight games.

On Point: San Sebastian by ten points.

Can the Knights hand the Stags their first setback of the Season? Don’t think so. MVP Jimbo Aquino, yep, he is the MVP of the league at this point of the season, will deliver once again and Pamboy Raymundo will too, and also Sanggalang and… never mind, coach Ato and his boys are just playing lights out basketball right now.

versus

The Sports Minded: Arellano by 10.

Celano and Ciriacruz will be too much for MIT.

KC13: Arellano by 10.

Lest Mapua plays the brand of ball they did against the Stags, they can win this. But Arellano has been consistent lately with their consistent scorers (and them some), and they’re hungry to catch up with the top four teams in the standings.

On Point: Arellano by seven points.

The Chiefs will win, lest Kelvin Dela Pena will suit up for the Cardinals. ’The Little chief’ will play big once again. How about another 20 point output? Let’s see.

In the much anticipated rematch of last year’s finalists, the three time defending champion San Beda Red Lions dominated the Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers down the stretch to grab the solo second place with an impressive 96-81 triumph in the 85th season of the NCAA.

MVP candidate Sudan “Superman” Daniel delivered the goods for the Lions the entire game. He fired 31 big points to fuel Beda’s inside attack as he pounded The Bombers’ defense by scoring at will in the paint.

The game, as expected, went toe to toe in the majority of the first half but as Daniel entered the game, the Lions quickly gained the upper hand to lead by eight at the half.

Meanwhile, after a lackluster first half, the Bombers stormed right back in the third with a telling run all the way to the early stages of the final canto. They even went on to grab a brief two-point lead early in the fourth. Unfortunately, they lost steam as there game went downhill as they let the Lions make run of their own- anchored by who else but, ‘Superman’- to finally put the game out of reach.

San Beda dominated the last eight minutes of the game and left no doubt to their supporters that they can still defend the title.

Sudan was just too much for the Bombers that every time he catches the ball down low, you what will happen, it’s all automatic. It’s all about the inside scoring of Daniel. That’s the story of the game.

Triangle Offense predicted a close Beda win (I predicted it by five) but surprisingly they won by 15. They executed their game plan to perfection and most importantly they contained JRU’s leading scorer in John Wilson.

James Sena, Mark Cagoco, and Marvin Hayes all had decent games but the Bombers just couldn’t solve San Beda’s running game. They looked puzzled on how the Sudan show worked his way on the inside.

The Lions now occupies solo second behind league leading Stags with an 8-1 card as the Bombers fell to third at 7-2.

With this statement game for the Lions, they proved something to their critics—–they are looking FOURward. (ETA: I’m so sorry The Sports Minded, but it’s going to be San Sebastian’s year! -KC13)

—————————————————————————————————————————————————

In the first game, Mapua surprisingly gave undefeated San Sebastian a run for their money. Many people thought the Stags would just walk through with this one but the Cardinals gave them all they can handle. That being said, the Stags still found a way to hold on for 77-74 win to remain unbeaten with an 8-0 slate.

Baste relied on usual suspect and scoring machine Jimbo Aquino in crunch time who dropped 22 points including a clutch jumper with over a minute left to push their lead to three.

Triangle Offense predicted a massacre for the Stags (I predicted Stags by 16) but the Cards instead showed up to fight.

The Stags will end their first round of play against the capable Letran Knights on Friday as they look to sweep the first round and avoid a first place tie with San Beda.

It’s NCAA Monday tomorrow! And the rematch of last year’s classic finals promises to give an intense and emotional tiff that will keep every fan at the edge of their seats with JRU Heavy Bombers (7-1) up against the San Beda Red Lions (7-1), featuring a bitter rivarly of coaches.

Predictions:

versus

The Sports Minded: San Sebastian by 16 points.

No brainer unless some sort of intervention happens.

KC13: San Sebastian by double digits.

San Sebastian will enter the second round via sweep. Amen.

On Point: San Sebastian by 20

Do i really need to predict this one? Stags will roll on to their 8 game winning streak via romp. I’m more interested in knowing what coach Ato feed these guys. They’re just on a tear!

versus

The Sports Minded: San Beda by five points

This is a toss coin and an evenly match affair. If Sudan plays his usual solid game and Beda’s wing players get going with their running game and outside shooting, Beda will take it. If Beda can’t stop John Wilson and James Sena, it will be JRU. No matter who wins, this rematch of last year’s finals will be close.

KC13: JRU by less than five points.

This will definitely be a close call. Both teams have the capability to explode with the amount of talent they have in their squad. But I do believe that if San Beda fails to guard JRU’s scorers well, it would kill them.

On Point: San Beda by 0.5

This will be a very tight contest with Beda surviving in the end. JRU’s just loaded with Wilson as their main man but, as a team I think the Lions are more composed down the stretch and they have more scoring options. Plus, they don’t have a Mark Cagoco-type player on their line up, who is just programmed to shoot, shoot and shoot no matter what.

GRABE. THIS WAS THE FARTHEST AND MOST EXTRAVAGANT TRIPS OF ALL TIME. IPAGPAPALIT KO ANG IBA PA NAMIN

GRABE. THIS WAS THE FARTHEST AND MOST EXTRAVAGANT TRIPS OF ALL TIME. IPAGPAPALIT KO ANG IBA PA NAMING LAKAD, MAULIT LANG ITO! THIS WAS THE HAPPIEST TRIP OF ALL TIME YET.

So basically, ako ang pasimuno nito. Actually, it was my mother and father’s idea na magpunta ako sa iba’t ibang schools and universities. It was my idea na magimbita ng kasama for me to enjoy school hopping. Hindi lang naman ako ang nag-enjoy eh. ALL OF US ENJOYED IT.

Masyado kaming naexcite within the previous week. Hahaha.

Pero guess what, 6:00 kami naka-alis. Tama ba ‘yan?? Basta ako sumunod sa usapan. Wala pang araw, nasa 7/11-Camella na ako. Sumunod sa akin si Roseann, then Gleison and Jhimireen. Then Bart. Tapos, maya-maya, si Jane. Then Hannah tapos si Anna. Paglabas ng araw, tumawid kami kasi doon nakapark ‘yung get away car namen. LOL.

First stop namin, De La Salle University Admission’s Office – Br. Andrew Gonzales Hall. FACT: ako ang kauna-unahang taong nagregister sa record book ng AGH for that day. Iniwan namin ang school id na dala namin for recovery later. Wala kami magawa while waiting. SOUNDTRIP at KWENTUHAN lang. We tried to contact Kate and Akira kaso walang reply. Earlier that morning kasi, we called them and they said we’ll meet at DLSU-AO-AGH. Tapos, maya maya, nagopen na ang Admissions. So we followed the steps and we’re done with that. May free bag kami from DLSU. Ang cute nung bag eh.

Second stop namin is for breakfast. Mcdonald’s Quirino. Hahaha. LOL. May baon ako sa Mcdo. Hahaha. Ok lang ‘yun. Mcdo din naman eh. While eating, nabuo ang loveteam na Jane Pascual at James Arnobit. Ewan ko ba kung bakit. Hahaha. Bagay naman pangalan nila eh. Hahaha.

Hahaha. Ayan, kasya pa kami dun sa car. Kahit masikip ng konti at mainit, what can we do, WE HAD SO MUCH FUN we didn’t have time to complain. Haha. LUMIPAD KA KUNG GUSTO MO” After that, nagkakwentuhan kami about driving and jokes about that. ROFLMAO. Kaso may problema.

Ateneo de Manila University ang pangatlong pinuntahan namen for that day. Grabe. Last ten minutes bago ang closing. We went to the Admissions and Aid Office. Nagbayad muna kami then there you have it. May application form na kami for Ateneo. Hahaha. Peacefull. Ang daming puno in an open park tapos may mga benches pa. Nakakatuwa. Doon namin naisipang kailangan naming makapasa sa ATENEO. It’s our ideal school talaga. Iba to. Hahaha. SKL. Hahaha. Pagpasok ng pera, lumalabas ulet. Hahaha. Mga kawawa. Tapos, nung nagCR ako, sabi nila, may nakakuha daw ng drinks na taga Ateneo, buti pa daw ‘yun. Napagkaman din daw silang mga taga Ateneo. Hahaha. Feel na feel nila eh. Naglakad-lakad kami for a while sa park then we tried to contact Kuya Jed Rendor, Jam’s borther who is currently studying at Ateneo.

Fourth stop. University of Santo Tomas. Dito maganda, OLD STYLE at mukhang nasa panahon ka ni Jose Rizal. May academic atmosphere din sila. Hahaha. We wandered around the University. Malaki pala ang UST. Pero nothing beats Ateneo. Hahaha. Hahaha. Then after UST, Jollibee naman. Bago ‘yun, nahuli kami ng MMDA. No left turn pala tapos napakaliwa kami. Hahaha. Hahaha. Grabe ang inet nun. Ang tinde. Tapos, habang nasa labas kami, binuhat namin si Kate. Grabe ang gaan niya. 39 kg lang daw siya. Kapag pala Kate + Kate = Carlos. 79 kg ako eh. Hahaha.

Next stop: Far Eastern University. Ayoko sa kanya in the first place na nakita ko ang kalsada around it. Magulo at walang academic atmosphere. Hahaha.

Hahahaha. Sarado ang Mendiola, ang daan papuntang CEU. Hahaha. So dumeretsyo na lang kami sa Mapua.

Seventh ang Mapua, ang first choice ko dati before I went to ADMU. Hahaha. Tuwang tuwa siya eh. Hahaha. SKL.

After ng mahaba-habang school hopping, naisipan nilang magMOA. Hahaha.

After nun, uwian na. Tapos, bigla kong tinignan ‘yung number, 1**. Hahaha. That’s it. I’m going home.

Haha. Hahaha. That is my ideal school. BTW, course ko pala is Civil Engineering pero sa ADMU, Electronic and Communications Engineering ako dahil wala silang BS CIV.

BY PUBLIC DEMAND, INILALAGAY KO ANG ISANG PANGYAYARING NABASA [as in wet] ANG LAHAT. Haha. Hindi ko na ilalagay ang pangalan niya dahil ayon sa claims ng blog ko, no names shall be put in vein. )

Note: JPEG file lang yan, kahit mukhang parang may pwede kang gawin, hehehe.

Actually, I’m a bit disappointed, not really because I’m disappointed with myself (and I shouldn’t be because I did pretty well, putting into consideration my very own “effort vis-a-vis result” philosphy, lol), but mostly because I think my parents are a bit disappointed about it. Eh kasi naman, the price we have to pay, haha. Pero in-explain ko na naman sa kanila na malayo yan sa pagiging full scholar, getting a 0.09 increase is not as easy to get as it looks.

Aral aral muna, hehe.

Now I have to overcome my financial struggles and I think I’m good to go! Really afraid about it, but I think I’m brave enough to face it! Hehehe.

Quote for the Day: Measure not the things that I can do, but the things that I’ll do in spite of.

Hmm ano nga ba.

Unang-una na-realize ko na napaka-introvert ko palang tao. Or siguro, very selective extrovert. Imbento, hehe. Hindi lang talaga kasi maiwasan, sometimes necessary talaga na maging mapag-isa muna ako so that I can organize my thoughts.

Sa tingin ko okay yun, but it doesn’t really help that much since I still make crappy decisions, lol. Hmp, napagtanto ko rin na I don’t manage my time that effectively, pero boo, dati ko nang alam yun, nire-reiterate ko lang, haha. And that I don’t deal well in stressful situations. Boo, walang kwenta, lol.

Too bad for me, hehe.

Here comes the sad (and disappointing) part.

I basically have nothing left, lol.

Oops, I still have my grades. But we all know na wala namang halaga yun (masyado). I did it for my parents, hehe. Naalala ko tuloy yung Pay It Forward. Lemme quote:

Eugene Simonet: And anyway, for what it’s worth… I’m grading you on the effort, not the result.

[Trevor doesn't even smile]

Trevor McKinney: I don’t care about the grade. I just wanted to see the if the world would really change.

Pay It Forward (2000)

I still believe that there’s a silent reward for an effort well done.

Ako rin, I want to see if the world would really change, especially for those whose efforts have not (yet, maybe in time they will be, and I’m hoping for that) been realized.

Pero isa sa mga kinalulungkot ko talaga ay ang aking immaturity when it comes to making sound decisions and having the guts to do what is right.

Noong unang announcement ng rankings, nasa no. 26 out of 40 kaya ako, at kinailangan kong mag triple-effort para lang maabot ang final rank ko na no. 6 out of 40. Shitty talaga, kinailangan kong i-prioritize ang design ko nun kaya bagsak ang mga unang quizzes ko (and of course, dahil tinamad rin akong mag-aral, haha). It was not a clean victory for most of us dahil talamak rin ang mga Old Testaments (OTs) (and New Testaments, definition: you don’t wanna know because it will scare the hell out of you) and everyone was frantic to get their ranks up… what a sad scene to see. Sana kinausap ko si Rafa about it, katulad na lang ng ginawa niya nung may problema rin siya, para ngayon I’m not struggling that much in regaining my integrity. Isang isyu yung pagiging unfair ng prof namin (which I won’t elaborate anymore, it’s not worth remembering), pero ibang isyu rin yung mga moral compromises na nagawa ko. Punishment will be harsh, but I’m hoping it won’t hit me that hard. Maybe I was worrying too much about my scholarship, boo, antanga ko naman, haha. Siguro if I was proactive enough, pwede namang kausapin si prof at sabihin na huwag namang ganyan prof napaka-unfair mo (at anghalay mo, lol), or kausapin ang buong klase at sabihin na huwag tayong magkagulo, world peace mga tol, haha. If I wasn’t so fucked up as to not do these things.

Nicosai, Rule No. 1: Never compromise your principles, fuck you if you do.

If it’s any consolation, I had deprived myself of any peace of mind since all this shit started.

If it’s any consolation (on my part), I mastered Terrestrial Microwave Communications System Design, hehe.

Hehe.

Next Episode: 6 Legendary Exams sa Communications 4
