Ok, so for anyone still waiting patiently for the follow-up Kaleida/Pastel Collision album (these last 11 years), I have excitingly (well, excitingly for me anyway) started working up some new songs that so far are down the lines of (alternately) heartbreakingly epic lo-fi Europop; heads-down pub rock; and poignant acoustic ballads recorded outdoors in the dark in the snow (just this afternoon; v atmospheric but too cold; worried about equipment getting wet. Obviously.) I have a very vague memory of hearing a Money Mark album somewhere once that sounded like it was a compilation album as each track was so different. Somehow, that quite impressed me. Anyway, more on this as and when.

I’d like to find someone who can sing in French btw, so if you have any bright ideas, send them through.

Presumably you’ve heard Camera Obscura’s new record, called ‘The Blizzard. It’s really good! Is it the best record ever that could fit in the Venn intersection between ‘indie’ and ‘Christmas’? It’s record of the week on Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 2 show here in England. Radcliffe used to play our records and surely would do again if we could only be bothered to make some more. So.

I love Camera Obscura and if you’re on this page, I think you might love them too. I’ve only just discovered them and feel slightly ashamed of this fact as they have been going since, roughly speaking, quite a long time (12 years?).

Anyway, here are the top pop debates on the web as of December 16 2009. Which side are you on?!

1. Marc Almond v Gary Numan

A clip of a possibly worse-for-wear Almond slagging off a new Numan record on a po-faced review show sometime in the early 80s. The comments beneath are fantastic, with irate Numan fans going, ‘Aha – but where’s Marc Almond now!’ apparently oblivious to the fact that most people might ask the very same question about their own boy. People get so worked up. This takes the ‘two bald men fighting over a comb’ analogy to new levels, surely.

To my mind, Almond is a great unsung artist, the Morrissey-it’s-not-okay-for-straight-boys-to-like. If you ever have the chance to see him live, go. And if you have the chance to download his album Stardom Road (and you do, it’s on itunes, obviously), then do it right now.

I have no thoughts whatsoever on Gary Numan. Should I?

2. Daphne & Celeste v Reading Festival

Footage of hopeless Shampoo-esque US pop duo getting bottled off while doing an ill-advised ’set’ (of two songs) at Reading in 2000. Brilliant debate in the comments section – usually home to professors, long on learning and short on time – along the lines of:

a) “D&C represented rubbish manufactured pop and they deserved everything they got! I was there and I’m really alternative and proud to have done my bit to show The Man what I thought. And it was a larf!”

b) “Well done! You threw a load of bottles of piss at two teenage girls. Very indie.”

Repeated for, like, 5000 comments.

My view? Well, you might think that ‘manufactured’ pop is terrible. (Though you may, conversely, approve of, say, the manufactured pop of Joe Meek or Phil Spector as it ties in with your indie notion of the mentally maverick male auteur). And anyway po-faced self-appointed guardians of the indie/alternative flame are much much much worse. (three muchs). Surely.

3. Simon Cowell v Rage against the Machine

You know about this one, I guess. The Facebook campaign to get Rage Against the Machine to be Christmas No 1 in the UK, to stop X-Factor talent show winner Joe McElderry claiming the honour.

RATM were on my breakfast show of choice this morning (BBC Five Live) and did a load o’ swearing that resulted in them being taken off air.

Capitalism still seems to be intact. At least, it was when I passed Argos on my way back this afternoon, about an hour ago.

Obviously, I think it’s a Good Thing that artists are ‘engagé’ and offer a political view and aren’t just idiots who quite like singing and want to be famous and make money and take coke and have their pictures in the paper and live in a big house.

But then… maybe we should face it: a lot of people like to listen to bland, faux-emotive airbrushed ballads about love sung by pretty young boys who’ve never been in love. They always have and they always will.

Maybe people should just get over this plain fact and stop trying to get their (mum/little sister/gay Nigel from Planning/other people to whom they’re convinced they’re intellectually superior), to listen to Angry Music.

4. Bono v Morrissey

Yes, this really is a Guardian/Observer column about why the writer prefers Bono to Morrissey. How thin do you want? Obviously I side with Morrissey (as do about 95 per cent of the many people commenting). But answer me this: what if, circa 1990, Bono had retired from pop to be, I dunno, President of the World and had bequeathed old The Edge and co to be Mozzer’s backing band and co-writers. Would Morrissey’s subsequent records have been more consistently brilliant than they actually turned out to be?

Come on – this is a great debate.

While you’re deciding, here is a brilliant Morrissey B-side about child abuse by religious types in Ireland. When X-Factor has its Mozzer week next year, I don’t give much for this being included.

Though I can hear it being a surprise inclusion on Subo’s follow-up album.

Sunday Night at the London Palladium

My first gig at this famous London Theatre since Kate Bush in 1979. Though I might have seen a family musical about a big flying car at this venue a few years back. Moving swiftly on.

In fact, parallels could be drawn between both these shows and Patrick Wolf’s performance. Fair enough, there were no child-catchers or flying cars in the Wolf show, but the performance really had a feel of musical theatre, with plenty of costume changes, glitter and atmospheric lighting.

I think Kate Bush is certainly an influence on Patrick’s music, particularly in some of the arrangements. Kate made good use of the large stage back in 1979, and so did Patrick in 2009. The first three-quarters of the show was remarkably restrained and intimate, with Patrick’s vocals really given the chance to breathe.

Highlights of the first half of the set included two of my favourite Wolf songs, Wind In The Wires & the haunting Bluebells.

Thickets from 2009’s The Bachelor made full use of the accompanying musicians, expanded on the night to to include a choir and string section.

“Just a little further up the hill boy
you’ll be home soon enough”

And then came the promised guest appearance. Marc Almond was unable to perform due to illness, and Patrick kind of gave the identity of the guest away on his Myspace blog “I’m sure my amazing duettist will raise it up! If you know what I mean.” So it was no surprise to see Florence Welch (without her Machine) duetting with Patrick on The Bachelor.

German techno uber-lord Alec Empire brought his box of many synths and trailing wires onto the stage for Battle & Hard Times. The latter song saw the whole crowd rise to their feet, where they remained for the majority of the evening.

The lush, string-driven forthcoming single Damaris was surely made to be performed in an ornate venue such as the London Palladium. The delicate The Sun Is Often Out was dedicated to two departed friends, and the show ended on a real high-note, with the decadent electro-pulse of Vulture, featuring Wolf spinning under a glitter-ball, adorned in sequins and looking like he had stepped straight out of Velvet Goldmine.

A clearly emotional Wolf kept referring to this show as being the best he had ever performed, and how he found it hard to believe that he was headlining the venue after being turned away from the Palladium 10 years ago, where as a teenager, he had had hoped to review a Bjork show.

The was a real air of celebration at this gig, and a feeling that Patrick Wolf is shifting up a gear. If finances permit, I’m sure Patrick will want to use strings again in a live setting, as it brought a real depth to the live show. Heres to 2010, a new album and more shows of this quality.

“Tears Run Rings” was the first single taken from British recording artist Marc Almond’s 1988 “The Stars We Are” album. This was the first of his albums with EMI Records. Almond says this period was one of his most experimental and  commercially successful.

The song peaked at number 26 on the UK charts, and sixty-seven on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its b-side was “Everything I Want Love To Be”.

In the US, the 12″ single was issued in a stickered company sleeve:

Das letzte Wochenende waren wir mal wieder unterwegs. Diesmal zog es uns ins englische Ausland nach Manchester. Anlass der Reise war ein Konzert von Marc Almond, ehemals Frontmann von Soft Cell, die den meisten durch die 80er-Hymne “Tainted Love” ein Begriff sein dürften. Marc selbst hat mit Songs wie “Tears Run Rings” und dem Gene-Pitney-Cover “Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart” durchaus auch einige Solo-Erfolge in seiner fast 30-jährigen Karriere feiern können. Aber wer länger mit mir zu tun hatte, wird vermutlich eh wissen, wer Marc Almond eigentlich ist .

Marc ist nun mal wieder auf Tour durch Großbritannien, und Manchester war der von Glasgow aus nächste Ort. Beim Konzert in der Manchester Academy hörte man neben Marcs eigenen Songs (sogar ein paar aus seinem im nächsten Jahr erscheinenden neuen Album, sowie einige sehr alte Klassiker) wie gewohnt einige Coverversionen, z.B. von David Bowie, Marc Bolan und Jacques Brel, die Marc alle zu seinen eigenen Idolen zählt. Da Marc in letzter Zeit einige traditionelle russische Lieder neu interpretiert hat, durften einige von ihnen natürlich auch nicht fehlen. Alles in allem eine sehr gelungene Show, die allerdings an Highlights wie dem Konzert zu Marcs 50. Geburtstag vor zwei Jahren nicht ranreichen konnte – aber jenes Konzert ist auch sehr schwer zu toppen, wenn das überhaupt möglich ist.

Da das Konzert abends stattfand, blieben wir bis zum nächsten Tag in Manchester. Neben ein wenig Stadtbummel war auch Geocaching angesagt, was uns unter anderem zum Turing-Denkmal in den Sackville-Park führte. Alan Turing, dessen Leben viel zu früh ein trauriges Ende nahm, war im 2. Weltkrieg maßgeblich an der Entschlüsselung der deutschen Enigma beteiligt, gilt als einer der Gründerväter der Informatik und lehrte an der University of Manchester.

Später haben wir uns noch ein wenig die Innenstadt angeschaut, bevor es dann mit dem Überlandbus wieder auf die fast fünfstündige (aber dafür äußerst günstige) Rückfahrt nach Glasgow ging.

En sólo unos días las reproducciones de vídeos en el Canal de La Edad de Oro en YouTube se han lanzado (ver la curva ascendente en el gráfico) y es sólo cuestión de tiempo que alcance un número altísimo de reproducciones diarias.

Es curioso ver en el gráfico de barras que los conciertos de La Edad de Oro están atrayendo a dos segmentos muy específicos de la audiencia. Por un lado los jóvenes entre los 13 y los 34 y por otro lado los nostálgicos que éramos jóvenes y vivimos aquella época y que ahora estamos entre los 45 y los 64 años, con un vacío entre ambos segmentos. El gráfico de sexos muestra un alto interés de las féminas para el tipo de música del que se trata, e incluso algunos días han sido la audiencia mayoritaria.

El mapa de audiencia muestra en un verde más intenso los países que le están dando mayor atención a los vídeos de La Edad de Oro, España, USA, UK, Italia y México son los que más visitan el Canal.

Como se ve en la imagen de abajo ya hay una buena cantidad de conciertos subidos, separados en Listas de Reproducción para fácilitar que se puedan ver conciertos completos. Algunos grupos españoles como Siniestro Total, Derribos Arias o Los Coyotes ya están publicados, con otros que estarán publicados en las próximas horas. Aún queda bastante material por subir y cuando todos los conciertos estén arriba pasaré a completar los programas enteros en un nuevo Canal que se surtirá del material ya disponible en el de Kigonjiro. Los proyectos se van solapando y apoyándose unos en otros. Comentare aquí los progresos.

Nice died one month after the recording sessions in the Ibiza hospital few hours after falling off a bicycle. A coroner’s report noted that she suffered a cerebral hemmorage.

No le había prestado demasiada atención a todas las opciones que ofrece YouTube hasta ahora que he tenido que buscar la forma de optimizar mi tiempo y recursos para subir los videos de La Edad de Oro.

El formato es un poco rígido y me gustaría que fuese más personalizable, pero aún así hay muchos recursos interesantes que pueden ser aprovechados como las Listas de Reproducción que ofrecen la posibilidad de ver todos los clips de un concierto en orden. Aunque el 99% de la gente las usa para hacer las más variadas recopilaciones.

Muy útil también me esta resultando la opción de subidas masivas, que me permite ir preparando videos, añadir la información y añadirlos a la cola de espera para que sean subidos automaticamente sin precisar de mi atención. Como soy un poco burro le tengo al pobre iMac subiendo sin descanso.

Así aparecen en el twitter las nuevas subidas de cada vídeo en YouTube. Completamente automático, pero sólo en inglés.

Otra cosa que permite automáticamente es que cada una de las nuevas subidas a mi canal sea publicitada en Twitter, Facebook y Google Reader. Así, cada vez que un nuevo vídeo ha finalizado el proceso de subida un tweet, una entrada en tu perfil y un nuevo feed RSS se generan y son mostrados en cada uno de estos sistema de comunicación planetarios. Ver los ejemplos en las imágenes.

Yo no tengo ningún control sobre como esta información es publicada, YouTube los implementa automáticamente y no deja personalizarlos. Estaría bien que se pudiese editar la información repetitiva para que por ejemplo sea en castellano y no en inglés. O redactar el propio usuario la plantilla de texto fijo que acompañará cada información que será tomada automáticamente de los datos del video subido.

Y así lo estaba haciendo el Facebook hasta que le dió un infarto cerebral tras una sobredosis de The Gun Club, The Sound, Nick Cave,... Pobre Facebook.

La verdad es que pese a esa rigidez y ausencia de personalización todo funciona muy bien. Bueno, no todo. Al Facebook parace que se le gastaron las pilas y dejo de añadir nuevas entradas a mi perfil. Supongo que un error puntual o puede que los videos de The Gun Club acabasen de fundirle los plomos a un sistema de redes sociales tan pijito.

La personalización del canal también es un tanto restringida. En parte entiendo que sea así para poner las cosas fáciles a usuarios básicos, pero debería haber un modo avanzado que permitiese adaptarlo a las necesidades o deseos de cada uno. Una de las restricciones que más me fastidia es sólo poder mostrar 3 Listas de Reproducción en la página pública del canal. Habrá que vivir con ello.

Esto son dos pantallazos del lector de News de mi iPhone, mostrando el índice y la pantalla del RSS con las nuevas subidas. Evidentemente yo no necisito leer el contenido, pero me sirve para saber lo que la máquina va subiendo por mi mientras yo estoy tomando un café o haciendo algo productivo (si es posible).

Hay otra cosa que al principio me pareció una tontería, pero que subvirtiendo su uso le voy a sacar partido para crear un Histórico de Programas de La Edad de Oro. Es el Videoblog, una tontuna creada para que la gente pueda tener una especie de blog automático creado a partir de una Lista de Reproducción.

He decidido crear una Lista de Reproducción llamada La Edad de Oro Programa a Programa que incluirá al menos dos vídeos por programa y editando el título y la información de esos vídeos y sustituyéndola por la relativa a cada programa podré hacer que el Videoblog acabe siendo un histórico de los contenidos ofrecidos por el programa. La razón de poner dos vídeos y no uno es que el espacio destinado al texto es muy reducido, así que meteré breves ráfagas de texto (a la twitter) usando un vídeo para la información en castellano y otro en inglés para los guiris. Ver Imagen.

Además lo voy a hacer como si fuese un auténtico blog realizado minutos después de acabar cada uno de los programas cuando fueron emitidos. Osea, que en lugar de ordernar de primer a último programa, lo voy a hacer al revés. El primero que aparecerá será el último (el de los Smiths) porque al ser la última entrada de blog deber aparecer sobre la anterior (Violent Femmes) y así sucesivamente.

Esta es la prueba de como quedaría el Videoblog. Se puede comprobar que el espacio para el texto es muy limitado, pero lo haremos valer. Títulos y contenidos personalizados en inglés y castellano.

No se como me lo voy a montar con los vídeos de los poquitos programas que me faltan, pero ya encontraré alguna solución por el camino, porque también esta es una taréa (además acumulada a la subida de los videos) que me llevará algún tiempo. Espero no desanimarme por el camino.

Lo único malo en todo esto es que cuando tenga todos los vídeos subidos ya me veo borrando todos los días tonelada y media de mensajes de correo enviados por YouTube diciendo: fulanito a votado el video tal, punkito te ha añadido a su lista de seguimientos, chatarrito ha dejado un comentario, Soraya Saenz de Santamaría ha dejado de hacer comentarios estúpidos sobre el gobierno y su contrapartida Leire Pajín lo propio sobre la oposición (bueno, ese mensaje no le borraría, pero tampoco creo en los milagros), etc… Todo sea por conseguir que todo este valioso material acabe siendo conocido por el mayor número de gente posible en todo el mundo.

Después de mucho tiempo esperando conseguir los fantásticos conciertos emitidos por el mítico programa La Edad de Oro de La 2 de TVE durante los años 83, 84 y 85, en 2006 y con motivo de la celebración de su 50 aniversario TVE reprogramó algunos de aquellos conciertos en el canal de TDT TVE50, que ocupaba el espacio nocturno del canal Clan TV. Esto duró sólo un año, hasta finales de 2006, luego todo el horario lo ocupó Clan TV.

Aquel año pude grabar y compartir los conciertos de The Smiths, Dream Syndicate, Violent Femmes, The Residents, Lou Reed, y Tuxedomoon. Pero había muchos más que no fueron emitidos en TVE50 y tanto los programas de una hora que montaron y emitieron bajo el título Lo Mejor de La Edad de Oro, como el DVD que apareció posteriormente editado por DIVISA, y que sólo incluía actuaciones de grupos españoles, no hacían justicia ni al programa, ni a los grupos que pasaron por él, ni al increible trabajo de Paloma Chamorro que parece que no fue invitada a participar ni en los programas resumen ni en la confección del DVD.

Así que me puse a buscar la forma de hacerme con todos los programas para así tener y  compartir todo lo que algunos pudimos vivir de primera mano aquellos años en los que La Edad de Oro era cita obligada ante el televisor.

Con toda la información que pude recabar, el día 23 de abril (festivo en Castilla y León) me desplacé a Madrid sin la certeza de poder lograr mi objetivo y con el temor de que me pillasen con las manos en la masa. Simplemente me hice de forma ilegal con la primera tanda de conciertos-programas y comencé a editar los DVDs y a compartirles en DIME en una serie que llamé Stolen Files (los Archivos Robados) por la forma en la que me hice con los originales, y también porque considero que de alguna forma nos habían sido robados a nosotros al no ponerlos en circulación en ningún formato. Y, de paso, me puse a jugar con la imagen de Expediente X para darle unidad a la serie y para no tener que dedicar horas a la creación de cada portada.

La serie tuvo una fantástica acogida por amantes de la música -y especialmente de los 80- de todo el mundo. Muchas de estas grabaciones eran inéditas y otras estaban en circulación procedentes de grabaciones VHS de baja calidad, así que esto supuso que se actualizasen a formato digital todas las copias que había en circulación, y además con unos menús y realización de calidad profesional.

Aprovechando que YouTube permite crear listas de reproducción y que alguno de los que se bajó mis DVDs ha subido ya alguno de ellos, he decidido crear las listas de reproducción íntegras de esos conciertos e ir subiendo poco a poco las demás para que así puedan ser visualizados tal cual fueron programados en su día por TVE2.

Así que en cuanto YouTube me lo permita (está caido por mantenimiento ahora mismo) comenzaré por el concierto de The Psychedelic Furs.

Esta es la lista de grupos internacionales que integra The Stolen Files series, a los que se añadirán los conciertos previamente grabados de TVE50 y finalmente los Archivos Robados en versión española, osea los conciertos íntegros de grupos españoles que no están incluidos en el DVD oficial. Es mucho trabajo, así que lo iré haciendo poco a poco durante los fines de semana que me sea posible.

My neighbours over the road are making thumping noises. Theres no Rhythm to these noises, so I imagine the neighbours picking each other up and hurling each other across the living room, the paper-thin modern walls warping into a sort of huge improvised drumskin. Thwack. Boom. Crash.

I think it is music. I must simply be mad, or hard of hearing.

I would really like to make a home movie, but I have to write a story for it first.  I have found an awesome 1987 book on the art of home video, and I would love to use the knowledge I have gained. I actually thought of making a sort of suburban road movie; like an actual road movie only short, whimsical and a lot easier to shoot.

Now, I open the floor to my devoted (hah!) readership: If I were to make a shoddy movie, what plot points, narrative devices, characters, settings, pointless cameos etc. would you like to see in it?

Any do-able suggestion will be considered, if my sudden desire to make cinema history is ever acted upon.

Con tre concerti, venerdì 7, sabato 8 e domenica 9 agosto (ore 21) nel complesso abbaziale di Sesto al Reghena, si conclude l’edizione 2009 di “Sexto ’Nplugged”, a cura della Pro Sesto. Per la serata del 7 è in programma il concerto del “Motel Connection e GnuQuartet”. Nati all’inizio del Duemila, i Motel Connection hanno influenzato la scena dance italiana. La formula dei Motel Connection si concentra sull’essenza del rhythm & Sound. Potete dire che è house music. Potete dire che è qualcosa che ha a che fare con la club culture. Ma forse sono ancora di più. Il concerto esclusivamente acustico vede la partecipazione del GnuQuartet un quartetto dal sound personale ed eclettico, che ha all’attivo molte collaborazioni con artisti italiani e stranieri e due cd propri.
Per sabato 8 agosto sono attesa Patrick Wolf piano solo e Cranes Unplugged. Patrick Wolf, venticinque anni e tre album all’attivo, prototipo dell’enfant prodige delle tensioni pop di prossima generazione, ha aggiornato la figura del songwriter neoromantico. Con una scrittura smaccatamente classica, nella quale a pesare è la recitazione turbata, ma soprattutto la canzone intesa come focus del processo creativo, nel solco di maestri come Scott Walker, David Bowie e Marc Almond. Il gruppo musicale inglese Cranes, spesso descritto come appartenente al genere gothic rock o Dream Pop, si è formato a Portsmouth verso la metà degli anni ’80, è noto soprattutto per il tono vocale delicato, ma impostato su un registro estremamente alto e simile a quello di una bambina, della cantante Alison Shaw.
Il gran finale è una sorpresa: domenica 9 agosto sarà per la prima volta in Friuli Giovanni Baglioni “Anima Meccanica Unplugged”. Figlio del noto cantautore Claudio, è dotato di una forza evocativa mai messa in ombra dal suo pur consumato virtuosismo, il quale spazia dal sapiente utilizzo del “tapping” all’impiego delle accordature alternative, dagli armonici artificiali all’uso della mano sinistra “over the neck”….

El rock no sólo es música sino todo un conglomerado de mensajes mediáticos, entre los que destaca la moda, ya que a través de la historia de este ritmo rebelde, los grupos impusieron en la juventud su forma de vestir desde la clásica chamarra de cuero, el pantalón de mezclilla, los tatuajes y hasta ese peinado de pelos parados del punk.

Hacemos un recuento de algunos íconos del rock que consideramos  que con su forma de vestir influenciaron al ciudadano común, aunque algunos no hayan sido los primeros en ponerse esas ropas que en su tiempo fueron muy extravagantes.

Los Beatles usando el pelo al estilo  “pudding basin”, corte de pelo que data de la antigua Inglaterra, y con sus sacos sin cuello causaron críticas en los adultos, pero gran furor en los adolescentes de los inicios de los años 60’s. Por lo que inmediatamente fueron imitados en su ”look” por otros grupos, desde los prefabricados Monkeys, los misteriosos The Animals o los propios Rolling Stones.

Años atrás Elvis Presley  puso de moda ese copete que le servía para poner nerviosas a sus fans, que gritaban histéricas cuando ponía esa cara de sex-symbol moviendo su cuerpo de manera atrevida. Mientras los hombres lo imitaban para tener más chicas. Unos de los grupos más impresionados con el “rey del rock” fueron los propios Beatles.

No fue la primer hippie ni la última, pero el estilo de Janis Joplin era la expresión más clara de cómo es una chica que usa drogas, que no se ducha, usando collares grandes con blusas estampadas o psicodélicas, con las obligadas sandalias o huaraches y esos pantalones ajustados de arriba y la “pata de elefante” .  Y su voz…pues sigue siendo la mejor, aunque murió muy joven.

 De la época glam se habla mucho de David Bowie, pero seamos sinceros, nadie saldría en la calle vestido de “Ziggy Stardust”, pero sí con zapatos o botas de plataforma y quizás con una corbata muy larga, al estilo de la banda británica Slade, y si los ponemos a ellos es porque Kiss, uno de los grandes, los tomaron como una gran influencia para tener actitud con ropa extravagante en el escenario.

Sid Vicious nunca fue considerado un buen músico por sus propios compañeros de los Sex Pistols, siempre decían que no sabía tocar el bajo, pero su imagen y su actitud creó el prototipo de cómo ser un punk. Chamarra de cuero, pelos parados, pantalones de piel ajustados y poner cara de malo.

Aunque la imagen punkie la creó para los Sex la diseñadora Vivian Westwood, Sid fue el único que se sintió a gusto con la ropa que portaba.

Así como Farrah Fawcett o John Travolta fueron imitados por millones de personas, el peinado y la cabellera rubia de Deborah Harry de Blondie causó gran impacto, en la época en que el rock se fusionaba con la música disco.

Cuando llegaron los ochentas, el glamour continuó y aparecieron los primeros peinados que ahora se conocen como moda Emo, pero Marc Almond de Soft Cell ya usaba ese flequillo tan “delicado”.

Toda esa tribu de gente dark y gótica, sin duda alguna retomaron la ropa y el maquillaje de dos bandas inglesas, The Cure, con todo y los pelos parados de Robert Smith, y del grupo Bauhaus que eran comandados por Peter Murphy.

Cuando Madonna estrenó el video “Like a virgin” no sólo puso al aire un hit que la inmortalizó sino una moda que adoptaron millones de adolescentes en todo el mundo. Según sus propias palabras así vestía desde que andaba buscando una oportunidad en las calles de Nueva York.

Aunque no se le identificó con el rock,  y fue más bien “el rey del pop”, el gran Michael Jackson también aportó su guante blanco, sus chaquetas, su peinado y esas calcetas blancas, que ya usaban los rocanroleros de los años 50. Sus cirugías también le dieron esperanza a todos aquellos que no estaban a gusto en la piel que portaban.

Los ochentas generaron muchos estilos en el vestir y una de ellas fue el llamado glam metal o hair metal y Poison fue quien le puso todo el diseño y actitud a esta moda. Realmente disfrutaba ver la imagen que manejaban, y muchos apenas los podíamos imitar en ponernos spray en nuestras caballeras.

En la parte contraria de este metal suave, estaban los tipos de Metallica, que aunque también traían largas cabelleras, preferian usar la chamarra o el pantalón de mezclilla, una camiseta de su grupo favorito y unos tenis sucios. El trash metal también se impuso como un estilo de vestir.

Aunque Nirvana fue el líder del grunge en los 90’s,  Pearl Jam impuso esas bermudas con camisas de leñador, dejando atrás cualquier indicio de sofisticación en la moda del rock. Los fans rápidamente adoptaron ese “look” que era más sencillo, barato y dejaron de gastar en spray.

Siguiendo con los ochentas, era común en bandas de rock-pop y en grupos que fueron progresivos en los setentas como Yes o Genesis, el uso de unos sacos con solapa muy delgada. El dueto de Wang Chung y los chicos modernos de aquellos años acostumbraban vestir así.

El rock también se vio influenciado por el hip-hop y todo aquel ritmo que negro viniera de una rama que no era precisamente la de Chuck Berry, y fue así como en los noventas Korn conquistó al mundo con su ropa deportiva de marca.

Hasta la fecha no veo a alguien que traiga el peinado de Bill Kaulitz, el cantante de Tokio Hotel, pero sí veo esa ropa, y la actitud sexualmente ambigua en muchos adolescentes. A pesar de que muchos rockers de la vieja escuela los vemos con indiferencia, la realidad es que están ahí vendiendo muchos discos en nombre del nuevo rock, guste o no nos guste.

 No se nos podía olvidar Judas Priest, que a pesar de que su cuero y estoperol tienen influencia gay, fue la forma en que el heavy metal institucionalizó su personalidad. Aunque es raro ver en la calle a alguien vestido exactamente como ellos, por lo menos tendrá en su indumentaria algún “artefacto”  que lo identifique como seguidor de este intenso género.

Allyson Shaw has just published a mindfuckingly-great cyberpunk novel entitled The Desperate Ones. It’s an intensely poetic, darkly fantastic dash for an apocalyptic finish line in a futuristic cityscape that will be recognizable to many of you. Lemma tell ya: it’s a madcrazy ride fr sure. But as this is a music blog, I thought I’d talk a bit about a few of my favorite versions of the Jacques Brel song that cued off her entire project. I am aware of at least a half dozen versions of this song, the best of which remind me of characters and themes throughout the novel. In no particular order I give you:

NINA SIMONE – “The Desperate Ones” (from Nina Simone & Piano!, RCA Records, 1969) Nina was a master at infusing other people’s songs with an urgent passion that spoke not only to individual battles but of much larger cultural and political wars still relevant today. This isn’t the first song most will associate with Nina, and for good reason. There’s a certain unhinged quality at work here many won’t be able to relate to. The pain fueling this sounds more rooted in Nina’s struggle with bipolar disorder, rather than any attempt to comment on wider sociopolitical issues.

But lord knows, even a single howl in the void can be powerful. Such quiet isolation parallels the perpetual state of forgetfulness of Professor Clymenus Bell in Ally’s novel. It’s the kind of burden that must be shouldered privately, but it’s one that crowds both the past and future into a present in a way that’s more than a little unsettling.

GLYN SYTLER & LYDIA LUNCH – “The Desperate Ones” (from The Desperate Ones EP, Atavistic Records, 1997) Glyn and Lydia’s take is unusual as it’s not based on the Brel original, but on the maudlin American version writer Eric Blau and Brill building employee Mort Shuman came up with for their 1968 stage review known as Jacque Brel is Alive and Well and Living In Paris. It’s not unlike how your 80’s teen hardcore band might’ve covered MINOR THREAT’s reimagining of WIRE’s “12XU” – twice removed from source material and hence infused with meaning never intended in the first place. In this case, it’s a beautiful thing they’ve concocted, indeed. Brel’s sadness remains, but the camp, whispered innocence of Alive and Well becomes darkly humorous in the hands of these two doyens of The Hate Generation.

It’s a wonderful example of just how to bring dead culture back to life again, and echoes the way Ally’s character Rabine taps into lost beliefs, vision, and directed will to save her world from the edge of near extinction. Yep it’s only fiction, but dammit if this shouldn’t be the focus of your Great Work too.

MARC ALMOND – “The Desperate Ones” (from the Brel Extras EP, Sin Songs Ltd., 2008) Don’t think I’m not aware: “The Desperate Ones” is one overwrought song, that’s fr sure. But few in recent decades have tackled overwrought as frequently and effectively as Marc. As if to counter all the others who came before, Marc emphasizes not the tragedy but the singular hope shining through the lyrics. He’s recast it from damning to redemptive.

Like everything else Marc has ever done, it could easily go horribly wrong . . . but I’d reckon it’s this version that most closely matches the overall tone of Ally’s The Desperate Ones. It’s a novel that not only contemplates total destruction but actively steps into – and through! – the apocalypse. And if that ain’t a hopeful thing, I don’t know what is.

Continua bem estranho, ou será original (?), Patrick Wolf, o britânico multitalentoso e multi instrumental que muito recentemente lançou o seu mais recente trabalho, The Bachelor. Tenho que dizer que o primeiro vídeo era demasiado sado-maso para o meu gosto, mas Wolf nunca fez questão de esconder a sua ambivalência sexual e os vídeos que produz são a prova disso mesmo.

Já o vídeo mais recente, Hard Times, continua a revelar a faceta vistosa, quase show off de Wolf, fazendo lembrar um pouco o estilo de Marc Almond dos Soft Cell, nos anos 80. Mesmo não sendo fã do estilo, continuo a achar que Wolf tem produzido algumas faixas musicais geniais e que mereciam um pouco mais de atenção aqui no nosso país.

E agora vejam os Soft Cell e tentem encontrar semelhanças:

Beautiful Brutal Thing, Marc Almond, Tenement Symphony, 1991

If you know Marc Almond at all it’s as half of New Wave duo Soft Cell. Soft Cell were briefly big in the 80s with hits like Tainted Love. Soft Cell has never been one of my favorite New Wave bands, so I was surprised at how much I like Almond’s solo work. I’ve only heard one or two of his solo albums, but apperently he has been very busy and has put out dozens of albums since the breakup of Soft Cell. Most of his material (that I’ve heard) is synth-based dance pop, not dissimilar from Soft Cell’s sound. Over the years Almond has worked with Nick Cave, John Cale, Antony & the Johnsons, Bronski Beat, and many many others. From what I’ve heard, Tenement Symphony is his best solo album (although what I’ve heard is only a small fraction of what’s out there).

Marc Almond also has a passion for cabaret style music. He’s a fan of Brel, Weill, Aznavour and, in fact,  a very diverse swath of musical styles. I challenge you to recognize this number (hint: not originally written in English).
