So today, or rather, yesterday, my friends and I wandered into Crossroads Trading Company to try to rid our blues. I bought three dresses, a beautiful print knit bolero, and a bright blue peacoat. (I’m satisfactorily happier now.) On the way out, I spotted Red Marc Jacobs Wedges and a stunning pair of Gray Stella McCartney Boots. (Thank the lawd they weren’t my size, or i’d probably be out $250 by now.) But they were pretty reasonably priced at $100 (MJ) and $150 (SM). So if ever you are in the vicinity of a Crossroads, go check it out in all its glory.

Speaking of two of my favorite designers in the history of HUMANKIND, below are some of my favorite looks from their Spring 2010 runway shows. Stella McCartney’s collection was magnificent and by gods, I swear I will be there one day! Marc Jacobs’ collections (both Marc by March Jacobs and Marc Jacobs) were BOTH marvelous, although I tend to shy away from the more (dare I say it?) young-y looks of Marc by Marc Jacobs. Still beautiful to behold, however. Onward maties!

Ahh, not only am I thankful for wonderful thrift stores, I’m thankful for the likes of you, Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs. (Really! Your designs make me so excited I probably would pee my pants if I saw them in person!) Your dominance in the fashion world is only evidence of your brilliant minds and ongoing greatness. I cut my Turkey in honor of you! (OK maybe not true, I don’t eat Turkey. Or meat for that matter… hm I should get that checked out. ) Have a great Thanksgiving, peoples! And don’t forget to be thankful for your bestest designers. (:

I chose to design for Marc by Marc Jacobs for the 3rd project in fashion illustration class. I love his style. If you all don’t know, Marc by Marc Jacobs is a contemporary branch of Marc Jacobs. It is aimed for the younger working women because it’s down-to-earth, yet playful and hip! I especially love his Spring ‘10 collection because of the fun and not too matchy-matchy patterns.

Anyhow, my designs were inspired by an exhibition at the deYoung Museum in SF. They had some African vases with little patterns on the rim. It was really pretty. I might have a bad quality picture of it on my phone.. but I guess I’ll save some time and not post it.

Lace is easily one of the most popular fabrics this season. No longer just for your undies (though there are many, many pretty lace-y underthings available), Lady Gaga’s VMA outfits, or your Grandma’s doilies, lace has found it’s way onto every type of clothing and accessory imaginable this season.

Whether you wear lace tights or a lace trimmed top, there is a way to add a little lace to your everyday look.  In stores, lace is appearing in unexpected places adding an unexpected touch of sex appeal to your basic t-shirts, tanks and jewelry (!).  But lace is doing more than turning up the sexy;  lace patterns found on fabrics this season add texture and visual interest. And simply adding lace – at the neckline, for example – adds a touch of playfulness, covering you up but still letting a little skin peek through.

The brand, mintdesigns was launched in 2001. They have been in Tokyo Collection since ‘03 S/S. The awards they won include the Moet et Chandon New Designer’s Award in 2005. In 2007, mintdesigns garage store opened in Shibuya PARCO. They presented their collection in the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT THIS PLAY! show. In 2008, they presented the opening show at São Paulo Fashion Week for ‘09 S/S. Both designers currently hold positions as guest professors at the Faculty of Art and Design at Osaka Seikei University. In 2009 they presented their collection at the Milano Salone TOKYO FIBER ‘09.Mint Designs turned out a dainty crop of dresses featuring details such as shimmery stripes, textured fabric and quirky graphics. One frock featured a darling print of tiny Charlie Chaplins, while another showcased circular cutouts along the sides.

Fashionably Late? Ever since Anna Wintour has been renowned for never being a minute late to an appointment and Marc Jacobs starting his Louis Vuitton show 2 minutes early (!) the word fashionably late has been chucked out of our vocab-list. The Brains + Beauty’s  of today want to be organized and on-time while still being in style…how? Watches…Watches…Watches…Essential in the life of any “organized and on time student” but…How do you wear the same watch with all your different looks? How do you find a watch which goes with all your outfits; from purple to orange and evening to day. Which watch goes best with what style and what are the different types out there.

The time where there was just one type of watch available is long gone…now you have watch-rings, watch-bracelets, chunky watches, fine watches, plastic watches, metal watches, expensive watches, cheap watches, mystery watches, retro watches. The list is endless! Below a list of our current favorites and how to wear them:

Who: Retro watches work mostly in 2 different ways, to complement an already retro chique, thrown-together 80’s look. Or to add a splash of color and unexpected pop to a simplistic style, mono-tint look.

Who: Compliments a feminine look  (think frilly + floral + layers + chiffon + nudes etc.) or brings feminine contrast to a masculine boy-oh-boy look because the watch will add a touch of femininity to your outfit

Wear: With a high waist A-line skirt (American Apparel), grey ribbed tights, a floaty chiffon top with a ruffled bustier (think nude tints), pearls and silver strappy sandals or ‘Tinker bell’ lace up booties (Chloe aw09/10) to compliment a feminine look or pair with a crisp white shirt (push up the sleeves for a more relaxed feel), tweed mini skirt, brogues or chunky heels and a long button up cardigan to add a touch of femininity to a masculine look.

Who: Adds power to a feminine look  with frill, chiffon, nudes etc. or pulls together and structures a glam-grunge/hobo-chique look.

Who: For the all-vintage lover or the label-addict to add a sense of personal touch to your style and avoid looking shop-window styled

Wear: With a lace-bodysuit, low cut t-shirt, denim cut-offs, opaques, socks, brogues and lots of gold chunky jewelry to compliment your all-vintage look or with a slightly too runway, advertisement look to make the look feel personal and original.

Don’t know about the REST of you but I’m absolutely LOVIN’ the over the knee boot at the moment.

I usually like my boots with either a flat or WEDGE heel, instead of the dressier pointy toed pencil heeled look, and am QUITE excited to cop a pair of the TRENDY over the knee styles.

Over the knee is perfect paired with a sleek pair of skinny jeans or basic leggings. AND if you’re a risk taker, throw those babies on with a drapey mini dress, lace overlay frock or a floral button down dress and add your own UNIQUE twist to it.

BUT remember girls, YOU can either make or easily BREAK this look.

It’s meant to be secksay not SKANKY.

Don’t be rocking a pair of thigh highs with your Marciano booty skimming skintight minidress. It’s a waste of a TREND and the sideways glances you’re gonna be SCORING are gonna be a WASTE of the 2 hours you spent getting ready.

Prime example on how to WORK this style:

Keep it classy and feminine on top and dominatrix on the bottom.

Always remember a little CLASS goes a LONG way. I mean does this girl really look like she came out with a SEX tape?

These Report Signature Kane Over the Knee boots are drool worthy AND suede is always a better option than a shiny finish…

You can get em for approx $450 but these suckers are well WORTH the $.

As for colors, these See By Chloe Velour Sparkle Tall boots are a DIVINE Taupe shade and have a WEDGE heel to boot.

(Get it? Boot. HILARIOUS.)

I’d suggest shelling out the $$ when you’re PURCHASING a proper pair of boots. They’re great for EVERY outfit, and I end up using mine all year long, with jeans to Daisy Dukes they’re worth the SPLURGE on a more established shoe specific brand.

Designers such as, Sam Edelman, Report Signature, Chie Mihara, Seychelles, Frye & Jeffrey Campbell OFFER some decently priced boots.

And if you’re a recession free  fashionista, Chloe & Marc Jacobs both make AMAZING over the knee boots like THESE:

Well, lovely readers, whomever you may be…

This morning was rough. I’m still a little shaken by the aforementioned suicide, plus I overslept and couldn’t find my hairbrush. I was late to work and didn’t do my reading for History of Communication. Lucky for me I had the oh-so-brilliant idea to tuck my favorite lipstick into my school bag. I applied it between work and my first class and my, what a difference it made. While this little tube didn’t solve or banish my problems, my ruby red lips certainly did put a spring in my step and gave me a reason to smile all day. Now I know why lipstick sales increase during economic downturns…

Anyway, here is a little outfit I threw together for a colder day (it was close to 70 degrees out today!):


The dress is Marc by Marc Jacobs (purchased for a very discounted price at Macy’s in August) with a Banana Republic cardigan and scarf, Old Navy leggings and of course, my favorite Frye boots. Normally, I find Marc by Marc Jacobs clothing to be a little too cutesy and young for me, but I think that this dress is quirky and adorable but not so over-the-top that it can’t be taken seriously.

Why am I wearing a garland, you ask? With only 5 weeks left in the semester, my roommate and I decided to do our Christmas decorating a little early. The garland is one of many decorations to come. Here are some paper snowflakes and a snowman that I made yesterday:

I’ve been watching old Sex and the City episodes lately. As problematic as I find the show, I still really miss it…
