I don’t think you could stay in any bit of sanity after watching this. When a psychologist

I don’t think you could stay in any bit of sanity after watching this.

When a psychologist’s (Ewan McGregor) suicidal client starts making bizarre predictions that, to everyone’s mounting consternation, begin to come true. Now, the shrink must race against the clock to save everything he loves before it disappears forever.

The film has a very intriguing psychological twist which I do enjoy from a lot of films. Vanilla Sky and The Sixth Sense are great films that I love to think about in films, but this one doesn’t do it that right.

To start off with something good if you want to see this film do it for the visuals. They are stunning, and create a mood with the film, as the camera shifts everyone once in awhile as something just doesn’t seem right. The color green in this film is shown throughout the whole movie and is really cool to see the color put in all ways different ways throughout the film.

However, as stunning as the visuals were, I just felt like they were put in for no good reason. I felt as if they were put in at times just to be put in and be over the top and try and have us confused about a story that is already confusing as it is.

The film tries a little too hard to be good, creepy fun, but about half way through the film I found myself so uninterested with this story and these characters that I almost just fell asleep. I think that the story wouldn’t have been too confusing if the film wasn’t giving out a lot of misguided clues that didn’t really fit well with the story.

Director Marc Foster shows his true talents of not knowing how to make an effective script at all. The film’s lines in this film are so cheesy and cliched that I couldn’t help myself to laugh by how dumb these lines were being put in.

Though the screenplay is pretty crappy, Stay actually has some good acting. Ewan McGregor is very effective and shows that he can keep a story together even if he does have cheesy lines, and Naomi Watts, as much as she was barely in does a very acceptable job playing his once suicidal girlfriend. Though, Ryan Gosling I think gives the knockout performance as he is very taunting but very believable that this guy is so good at playing with this guy’s mind that you actually start to like him out of all the characters.

The ending is so worthless. The payoff is so weak that after watching this film I felt that this whole movie of 1 hour and 39 minutes was just a total waste of time and in the end pointless.

Consensus: Though visually dazzling and some credible acting, Stay suffers from a bad screenplay, worthless payoff, and ultimately a film you will lose interest for halfway through.

I watched Kite Runner, the movie directed by Marc Foster and based on Khaled Hosseini’s book by the same title, recently. It had such a raw quality to it that it set me thinking about fate, honor and circumstances, as perceived by the characters as well as us, in general.

The interesting part of the movie is that it keeps the scenes, the characters and the emotions very real, no overdramatization. The truth and the unrevealed circumstances are so overwhelming that underplaying it was the best tactic could have been used, while taking the story forward.

In the backdrop of the talibanization of Afganistan, the story unfolds – the strange friendship between the protagonist and the servant’s son; the reality of the father of the protagonist who has an illicit affair, and his attempt to keep his honor by ensuring the child grew up as his servants’, in his own backyard; their journey across the seas seeking refuge in America and going from being a landlord to a gas station owner; the servant and his son are left behind to fend the family house; the protagonist and his wife not having a child; the protagonist’s trek back to Afganistan to reclaim the lost friendship, only to realize that the servant’s son was in fact his own half-brother and that all that is left of their relationship is his nephew in an orphanage; his genuine attempt to take the child back home – and ends where it all began, flying kites!

Worth a watch, I must say…

I am not one to warm up to movies centered around themes such as this film. This is not because the idea of adults finding their inner child is ridiculous or immature to me. It’s a result of films facing this theme also face a very big challenge on managing to correctly portray a transformation of an adult when they are met by children. Also if it actually extremely benefits the adult character in many profound ways. Most of the times films never seem succeed in the way they should at this and are done so irresponsibly promoting dangerous styles of living that could be just as hurtful to others around us. Now the major question that is posed then, is why does this film succeed where others do not? What makes this film so precise yet so open?

With Johnny Depp as the lead character, James Matthew Barrie, you know he will be ideal for the role of someone inspired by creativity considering the unique feeling Depp can bring to any film. At the outset of the Finding Neverland, Depp’s character is in dire straits to not only find himself as a writer but flat out just find himself. Eventually he does succeed at both through the help of three children he befriends whose mother, played by Kate Winslet, is ill. Depp discovers what he had long been missing, imagination and open mindedness. The children bring him that which is throughout is so wonderfully conveyed. His new lifestyle in no way endangers the people around him rather it enables his decisions to be more enlightened and thought out. Yet it still brings him into question. The cast is filled with talent ranging from of course Depp and Winslet as well to Julie Christie and Dustin Hoffman. What the cast does not just play their characters, their characters are embodied by them all the way down to the performances of the kids.

Marc Foster takes on this challenge of an adult searching for himself with complete success. The writing and dialog is always engaging as well as the music and all the other technical aspects that go into making a movie. Still, remains the question what sets this film apart from others that attempted to be like it? Unlike other films this film is centered around youth equaling imagination and creativity. Not always is it a must to abide by the rules, maybe not the rule of law but the unwritten rules of being an adult, being a writer or any other sort of unwritten or written rule relating to anything. Nonetheless this must be done at a responsible and safe level which this film never fails to display. These rules can limit our creativity which limits the capabilities of our mind and ultimately drastically decreases the chances at happiness on any pure or genuine level.

Too often is youth simply associated with fun, stupidity and meaningless entertainment. It never falls into that trap. What this film shows is that we make meaning of our lives and this should start from our youth but not dissolve as our lives become further complex and self-contradictory. Depp shows with his reclaimed youthfulness his life can only go up as does his happiness yet this is unjustifiably rejected by “responsible”, “sensible” and “mature” adults. Depp’s characters knows they are wrong through his writing and newfound appreciation of life but more importantly the people close to Depp know it and can see it to be true. In this way though, Finding Neverland may give us the key clue on how to find ourself.

Quantum of solace: Had its good and bad bits.

The story was fairly decent, but jumped around a lot.

The action scenes should have been amazing, but were so poorly edited that it was just disorientating.

Both bond girls were smoking, but never really got a proper entrance or scene.

The baddies were so shit it was unreal, the main guy was just a corrupt businessman and bent politicians are a fact of life!

No gadgets, except a shitty super-computer in M’s bathroom!

Overall it could (and should) have been brilliant but you get the feeling they’re trying to make it too realistic, especially with the lack of gadgets, cars, EVIL villains, and bikini-clad wimin’ everywhere. The writer’s seem to have forgotten than this is what made bond great.

Score: 6/10

Here is a dope promotional video for Swiss International Airlines. I love it when I see really cool conceptual projects like this, where the director could have just as easily made a standard “travel to your destination comfortably and safely” with stock images of palm trees and smiling flight attendants. It’s a good reminder that anything can (and should) be well designed, and it is our job as designers to develop concepts that are creative and pertinent, and just as importantly, present them in a way that our clients can see the benefit and it doesn’t scare them. I often have to remind myself that there is no such thing as a “cool” or “uncool” project, just cool or uncool solutions.

Yo soy Ann Darrow.

Cast: Khalid Abdalla, Zekeria Ebrahimi, Homayoun Ershadi

Director: Marc Foster

Genre: Family

The film is entirely based on the novel of the same name by Khaled Hosseini and having read the novel almost more than a year back, i was longing to watch this movie.

There are plenty of ways in which you can spoil the work of a wonderful book by trying to make a movie out of it, but in this case fortunately that has not been the case.

The film, just like the novel, is based on the life of two friends Hasan and Amir, their upbringing in the late 70’s Afghanistan, and their struggle thru the Russian invasion and finally the country’s oppression under Taliban. The film depicts to perfection the utter serenity of the typical Afghan culture and some of the scenes do tremendous justice to the novel.

Being a film of course, there were some part of the story missing but that takes away absolutely nothing from the movie.

The actors have done a wonderful work and with wonderful camera work this film is just a pure treat……….

Only one glitch which i felt in this film was.. the dialogue “For You.. a thousand times over”… this line in the novel can really churn on a whole set of emotions but unfortunately that was missing in the movie, because it was in persian and i had to get to know that by reading the subtitle.

Besides that, the film is good enough to keep you entertained and also kindle some thoughts about how times were, during the 70’s in Afghanistan and how things are now.

I would give this film 8/10.

Any decent Bond film begins with three crucial ingredients- a good soundtrack, a good title, and a s

Any decent Bond film begins with three crucial ingredients- a good soundtrack, a good title, and a storyline you can sum up in a couple of sentences. Quantum of Solace, therefore, is struggling from the word go.

Quantum of Solace is effectively a partner piece to the hugely successful Casino Royale, which introduced Daniel Craig as a new, high octane James Bond who is at once rougher and more soulful than any of his previous reincarnations.

It was an inspired piece of casting, and here Craig continues his rehabilitation of a character that had become a self-parody in the Pierce Brosnan days. Again he puts in an excellent performance, but is unable to carry a film which is, to be honest, a bit of a mess.

For the first time in the Bond franchise, the narrative of one film is allowed to flow organically into the next one. The film starts exactly where Casino Royale ended as Bond attempts to capture the shady criminal Mr White with not one but two chase sequences.

The narrative hook of Quantum of Solace is, or at least should be, the question of whether Bond is pursuing this new criminal underworld out of a sense of duty, or out of revenge and bloodlust for the death of Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), the secret agent he falls in love with and who he suspects of betrayal at the end of Casino Royale.

James Bond the rogue agent is a strong idea, but an idea is all it is. Both dramatically and filmicly, Quantum of Solace fails to harness Bond’s rage and loneliness that is supposed to propel the film forward. As such, solace is never achieved because there is nothing for it to compare to.

Marc Foster was bought in to direct the film because, after films such as Finding Neverland and Monster’s Ball, he was considered a director who could communicate the subtleties of a character. During filming, there were whisperings of continued problems with the film’s script, involving numerous re-writes and doctorings.

As such, one never gets the impression that Foster has been able to marshall his subject matter, or work on the aspects of the franchise he was bought in for.

The film veers manically from frenetic action sequences to scenes that are stodgy, pensive and dialogue heavy. At only 106 minutes long, it is the shortest Bond film but an awful lot is packed in.

The result is confused, disjointed and debilitated by an almost demented sense of energy, as if the director has decided to prioritise breakneck continuity over everything else. One gets the impression there is a good film hidden in here somewhere, but most of it has been left on the cutting room floor.

If Casino Royale was a reclamation of Fleming’s original source material, Quantum of Solace offers a return to the stagnation that had inflicted the franchise. Daniel Craig deserves better.

Angry and aggressive, the James Bond in Quantum of Solace is definitely not your parents’ Bond. The movie picks up right where we left off in Casino Royale, with James searching for the people who blackmailed Vesper Lynd into betraying him. Unfortunately, director Marc Forster is only able to capture a fraction of the elegance from the first film. While there is enough substance here to keep us intrigued, the story itself takes backseat to the frenetic action. The talented Daniel Craig, who was brilliant in his first outing as Bond, spends his time furiously running, punching, and shooting, leaving action buffs drooling but the rest of us generally disappointed.

In the world of spy thrillers, James Bond has always been a household name. From the smooth voice of Sean Connery to the womanizing ways of Roger Moore, Bond has always been a milder, friendly spy who took his time and acted subtlety. Other spy series such as the ‘Derek Flint’ films starring James Coburn, and the television show I Spy attempted to imitate the slow-paced Bond style. It wasn’t until the new millennium that action became truly synonymous with spy movies. The Bourne series completely raised the bar for all future spy flicks, creating a character in Jason Bourne who is equally intelligent and relentless. Marc Forster and Daniel Craig attempt to perpetuate this trend by giving us a darker, edgier film. The film itself starts off aggressively with an intense car chase sequence, setting the pace for the rest of the movie.

During the brief periods of breathing time we are given, the script fails to deliver, leaving us with a hollow feeling. There is absolutely no emotional connection to either of the Bond ladies. Even Strawberry Field’s death is just another tally to the body count surrounding James Bond. Leading lady Olga Kurylenko delivers a stale performance as the beautiful Camille despite the fact that she is the only other main character who is given a truly interesting back story. The action sequences themselves are merely average, because of Marc Foster’s inexperience with action films (his previous films include Monster’s Ball and Finding Neverland). He does, however, do an excellent job of providing us with a dark atmosphere, which is a stark contrast to the colorful clothes and locales of the prequel.

Where the film stands out from other typical action movies is with the familiar Bond characters. Daniel Craig’s return as Bond is not nearly as compelling as his first jaunt, but he still manages to do an excellent job portraying a relentless, heart-broken man who throws himself into his work to deal with his pain. His trademark deadpan humor and his moments of compassion, in particular when he is holding a dying Mathis in his arms, both provide a welcome break from the rapid pace of the action. Judi Dench’s return as M is a surprise hit, as she gives M a brand new human dimension. The conflict between her obligation to her duties and her loyalty to her friends is expertly displayed by a more than adept Dench. The Bond villain portrayed by French actor Mathieu Amalric is a convincing, if somewhat typical, bad guy who has no qualms about being bad.

Ultimately, the cons of the film outweigh its pros. While there are a couple moments of brilliance (in particular, a breathtaking sequence in an Opera house), the shoddy directing and script drag this film down. However, because this film ties off James’ personal dilemmas, we can expect them to return to the drawing board for the next film, and the best part is: Daniel Craig’s still going to be in it.
