Il Livorno, dopo il benservito a Gennaro Ruotolo, ha da pochi minuti un nuovo tecnico. Si tratta di Serse Cosmi che, dopo il colloquio avvenuto oggi a Genova con il presidente labronico Aldo Spinelli, ha trovato l’accordo con il massimo dirigente del club toscano. Troppa la voglia dell’allenatore umbro di rientrare in pista nel grande calcio, di certo per lui è una sfida particolare in una piazza esigente come quella amaranto. “Sono rimasto fregato troppe volte, è meglio se per ora non parlo”, aveva chiosato scherzando il sanguigno tecnico ex Perugia, che ora presumibilmente riproporrà il suo classico 3-5-2 per risollevare il Livorno dalle sabbie mobili della classifica. Uscito da pochi minuti dagli uffici di Spinelli, Cosmi si è detto “motivatissimo e molto…arrabbiato (eufemismo, ndr), nonchè convinto di poter fare molto bene”. Diciamo la verità, gli speciali di Zelig sono stati un pò un disastro: da Brignano (di cui è prevista la seconda parte domenica 18 ottobre) a Ale&Franz gli ascolti non sono creasciuti, neanche cambiando giorno di messa in onda. Domenica 11 ottobre comunque ecco arrivare il terzo speciale, quello di Checco Zalone.  Il celebre attore-cantante sarà protagonista di un vero e proprio spettacolo dal Teatro Ariston di Sanremo. Ospiti d’eccezione della serata saranno la cantante Arisa, performer del brano “Sincerità” che ha trionfato a Sanremo Giovani e il duo amato dai giovani Zero Assoluto. I cantanti si esibiranno insieme al cabarettista, dando vita a duetti musicali esilaranti, ma ci sarà spazio anche per un ospite fuori dal coro, Marco Materazzi, difensore dell’Inter che interverrà sul palco in una veste insolita. Materazzi: Head-butts welcome

It’s pretty well established that Marco Materazzi is an irritant. When the best player in the world would prefer to deck you than stay on the pitch to try to win a World Cup Final, you’ve got to have a pretty special talent for rubbing people up the wrong way. I’ve only ever watched him play in televised matches, but quite how the screen of my aeging Grundig gogglebox has survived the various items I’ve launched at the Italian, I really don’t know. The absence of a plie of bricks next to my sofa perhaps?

Anyway, why is he so annoying? Last week Didier Drogba threw himself theatrically into this series, along with a smorgasbord of expressions likely to get even the calmest of Anglican vicars reaching for their crucafix of wrath. That said though, whilst Drogba is undoubtedly a five star toss-pot, he is a very good footballer, and therefore I’m happy to allow him a small percentage of his sizeable arrogance. The problem we all have with Materazzi is that no-one ever really finishes a rant about him with ‘…but he is one hell of a player’.

Because he isn’t. Actually, it’s common knowledge that if you took away the Italian’s skills as a wind up merchant, and a level of aggression only similar to the rage-monkeys in 28 Days Later, he’d be, well, a bit rubbish. Ok, he’s useful at set-pieces, but so was Ramon Vega.

There are times when he even gets under the skin of his team mates. Zlatan Ibrahimovich, when asked why Inter lost to Liverpool in the Champions League a couple of seasons ago brilliantly replied, ‘Why did we lose? Why don’t you ask Materazzi’. The reporter didn’t need to bother, that said it all.

The level of regard with which he appears to hold himself is therefore unfounded, and therein lies the bugbear most of us share when it comes to Marco Materazzi. He prances about the pitch on the wind-up for 90 minutes, putting in the sort of career-ending mis-timed tackles that would make even Roy Keane wince, and then he has the sheer cheek to go and pick up a World Cup winners medal. It really makes you want to hurt him.

I mean, just look at some of these tackles (Advisory Warning: Mute the video to avoid the crappy Euro-Pop soundtrack the creator of this compilation has inexplicably chosen!)…

Anyway, I’d like to continue this rather therapeutic release of pent-up rage, as it has been far more useful (and less expensive) than throwing bricks at my television. However, I feel that I’ve wandered again into the realms of missing the point of my angry warbling. How smackable is his face? I have fed an image of his mug through the ever-reliable ‘Lee Bowyer Smackablomator’, and it has spat out the following result. I feel it’s let him off lightly. What do you think?

‘Matrix’ is fuming as he claims Felipe Melo insulted the referee during the Old Lady’s clash with the Grifoni last night.

Inter defender Marco Materazzi has hit out at the refereeing standards in Italy, as he perceives there has been one rule for him and another for Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo.

The Brazilian midfielder, who signed for the Bianconeri this summer from Fiorentina, was booked in their 2-2 draw with Genoa last night, and the Nerazzurri defender let gathered journalists know what he thought of it.

“I am a bit like coach Jose Mourinho – I don’t like it when I suffer injustices,” Materazzi declared to Il Corriere dello Sport.

“Did you hear what Felipe Melo said after his booking? Shall I tell you? He said ‘you son of a bitch’ to the referee. Why was he not sent off?

“The laws must be equal for everyone. It happened in the Trofeo TIM as well – I told the referee Antonio Damato that it was a shame he blew for a penalty,” Materazzi continued, recalling his dismissal in the pre-season tournament against Inter.

“It was for a trophy that doesn’t even mean anything and I paid a €5,000 fine. It’s not good like this.

“This is absolutely not a protest against the refereeing system. But if you want to have a working relationship then you must have the same standards.”

Marco Materazzi non sembra proprio aver gradito le dichiarazioni di Ibrahimovic, convinto che l’Inter abbia vinto tre scudetti in tre anni sul campo solo grazie alla sua presenza. “Grazie Ibra per i tre scudetti, ci vediamo mercoledì”, ha detto il difensore nerazzurro rispondendo ai cronisti all’Arena civica di Milano, dove è intervenuto per incontrare le squadre partecipanti alla Homeless World Cup. Mercoledì l’Inter ritrova Ibrahimovic per la prima gara di Champions e Materazzi si augura che i tifosi accolgano l’ex Ibrahimovic con indifferenza. “La cosa che può più far male a una persona è l’indifferenza – ha detto il campione del mondo -  lui ci ha aiutato a vincere tre scudetti, ma noi eravamo una  squadra”.

E a stretto giro di posta risponde a Ibra anche un ex compagno, Amantino Mancini. E non sono parole al miele. “L’Inter – spiega l’ex romanista ai microfoni di Sky Sport 24 – esiste da 100 anni e ha vinto già in passato”. “Secondo me – continua Mancini – è stato un po’ provocatore ed esagerato, noi diciamo quello che pensiamo rispetto alla sua dichiarazione, ma non è come dice lui”.

Inter-Barcellona è già cominciata anche nelle parole di Thiago Motta, che ricorda al nuovo
attaccante blaugrana che “nel calcio non vince uno solo”. Intervistato da Tuttosport, il centrocampista italo-brasiliano, ripresosi completamente dopo il leggero infortunio rimediato nel derby, rilancia le ambizioni nerazzurre: “Noi come il Barça? Non vogliamo ispirarci a nessuno. L’Inter deve essere solo…l’Inter. Per vincere, soprattutto in Europa, dobbiamo trovare una nostra identità. Tutti parlano del Barcellona perché l’anno scorso ha vinto tutto, altrimenti avrebbero cambiato tutto. Il calcio è cosi’”.

Il centrocampista brasiliano dell’ Inter, Thiago Motta non ha dubbi su che partita sarà quella tra i nerazzurri e il Barca, valida per la fase a gironi di Champions League.

What did he say? The speculation continues as to the words that pushed Oregon running back LaGarrette Blount over the edge.

The reality is what was actually said probably would have made very little difference, but still the viewing public – those that watched it post-game and those that saw one of the 3 million replays – are no doubt a little curious.

For those of you that may have missed it, after Oregon’s loss 19-8 loss to Boise State, BSU defensive end said something to Blount and the kid flipped. Not just lost his cool, but temporarily lost his mind. Blount first punched Hout in the face. Then he went after his own teammate (Garrett Embry) who tried to intervene. Following that, the senior attempted to re-enact a seen from the Malice at the Palace by entering the Boise State stands, before security subdued him.

Blount will conclude his college football career on the bench after being suspended for the rest of the season and, in a display of good decision-making, all of his post-incident comments have been of the apologetic variety. Oregon wants to put the incident behind it – after all, the Ducks still have a season to play. And after a teleconference on Monday, it’s clear that no one from Boise State or the WAC plan on sharing the words that set it all in motion (or if you were watching the replay, slo-motion).

“His [Hout's] comments triggered the Oregon player to act like he did, but the words that the Boise State player said to the Oregon player are pretty regular occurrences I would think either before a game, during a game or after a game,” WAC commissioner Karl Peterson said on Monday in what may be one of the vaguest statements ever. (Why he couldn’t say Blount’s name – since we all know it now any way – is another question to it’s own.)

But not revealing what was said just drags the incident out and allows the lore to grow. It’s like when Zinedine Zidane headbutted Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup. We knew Materazzi said something, but Zidane refused to repeat it and Materazzi, likely smarting from the headbutt, decided to keep his mouth shut. The longer it went on, the more offensive the comment became until it got to the point where I would have smacked Materazzi myself. In the end, it turned out what Materazzi said wasn’t nice, but it probably was something a season professional player should have been able to take without losing his cool in one of the biggest games of his career.

Why not just tell us what Hout said and get it over with? Could it have been so bad that we’d never forgive him? And, if it is, then he probably should at least sit out a game. I don’t doubt it was something that players say all the time, so why not just spit it out?

Very few things warrant being clocked in the jaw, and on a football field, where smack talk is the norm, even less things warranted being popped in the head. Still, it can take the littlest thing to push someone over the edge. In a game where players are rewarded for hard hits and crushing blows on the field, where a destroy-the-opposition mentality is rewarded, it can be tough for players to separate that the second the game ends.

It works against Blount that he didn’t have a sparkling clean image before this incident. It also doesn’t help that it occurred on a national telecast, forcing Oregon to take major action. However, Blount will keep his scholarship and be allowed to practice with the team, which is admirable. As Ducks coach Chip Kelly said, the team isn’t going to “throw LaGarrette Blount out on the street.” (Maybe someone learned something from watching the Maurice Clarett story.) Blount’s still a talented player and will have the chance to make an impression with NFL teams – although, he’ll have a lot of explaining to do in the personality part of the interview process.

Given the size of these athletes (and sometimes their egos and attitudes) and the attention paid to the multi-billion dollar business that is college athletics, it easy to forget these are just kids.

I’m not saying what Blount did was right. But I would hope that one stupid moment of insanity as a college student (in which no one was seriously hurt and no laws were broken) would ruin a person’s future. God knows, a lot of us would be in trouble if that were the case.

However, if Blount is lucky enough to get that shot, he better show up at every training camp, not say a peep about how many zeroes are on his contract and learn to let insults roll off his back like, well, like water off a Duck.

Parlando insomma di quello che ho visto. HO VISTO….

HO VISTO tutte le squadre ancora stanche e imballate. Fortunatamente, però, si è pensato di far iniziare il campionato alle 18:00 o alle 20:45 visto che siamo ancora in piena estate. Giusto così, finalmente. Il caldo si è sentito lo stesso ma un conto è giocare di sera, un conto è sudare alle 15:00 di fine agosto. Peccato che a dicembre e gennaio invece di giocare il pomeriggio, si giocherà la sera…

HO VISTO José Mourinho in crisi per la prima volta. Una crisi mentale più che altro. Il tecnico lusitano ha cambiato modulo per tre volte in 45 minuti, è andato in palla dopo la sostituzione di Muntari (tirando poi in ballo il Ramadan) e ha fatto scelte tecniche impensabili all’inizio. Materazzi titolare è stata una sorpresa visto che in Supercoppa il difensore azzurro si accomodò addiritttura in tribuna. Il centrale nerazzurro mi è apparso in confusione tattica (la sua intesa con Lucio è stata pessima) e ha commesso una enorme ingenuità che poteva costare il cartellino rosso. Sorprendente è stata anche la scelta di Quaresma. Intendiamoci l’esterno portoghese a mio avviso non ha sfigurato, strano però è stato il suo ingresso in campo. Quaresma in amichevole non ha mai giocato e in prepartita il favorito sembrava Mancini. Sorprendente è anche il precoce accantonamento di Davide Santon. Il ragazzo non si è ancora mai visto, neanche in amichevole. Ma non era un predestinato?

HO VISTO un buon Milan. Sono contento per Leonardo. Il neo tecnico brasiliano è una persona che stimo. Badate bene non ci ho mai parlato, ma una persona della sua cultura e del suo spirito merita rispetto. Col calcio c’entra poco è vero, ma è pure vero che in questo momento è uno dei pochi che può stimolare a sufficienza Ronaldinho. Contro il Siena, Dinho ha fatto vedere buone cose oltre i passaggi illuminanti. Come ha detto Leonardo, “si è mosso”. Pato è sempre più cinico, sarà lui l’ago della bilancia dei rossoneri quest’anno. Bene anche la difesa. Nesta e Thiago Silva si sono comportati bene. Uno rientrava da tempo immemore, l’altro era all’esordio. Attenzione però, non è tutto oro quello che luccica e la disattenzione sul gol di Ghezzal (anche lui sotto Ramadan…), ne è la conferma

HO VISTO un ottimo giocatore: Diego. Il numero 28 della Juve ha dominato per 50 minuti. E poi? La condizione fisica è venuta meno, il fantasista brasiliano è sceso in terra e la Juve si ritrovata ad essere la solita vecchia Juve. Poche idee, terzini non all’altezza, troppa distanza tra i reparti. Ciro Ferrara ha ancora molto da lavorare. La distanza con l’Inter credo che sia ancora molta, ma la Juve c’è e si respira un’aria positiva a Vinovo.

HO VISTO una Roma in difficoltà fisica e mentale. E’ un caso che il cattivo stato di forma di Daniele De Rossi crei così tanti problemi alla fase difensiva giallorossa? Non credo. De Rossi è il perno della squadra, più di Totti a mio avviso. Appena viene a mancare lui l’armata di Spalletti si trasforma in un castello di carta. Negativa è stata anche la prova di Marco Motta e Stefano Guberti (al di là del tiro che ha generato il gol di Totti). I due acquisti della Roma stanno pagando eccessivamente la loro pessima condizione fisica. Una nota di merito la riservo a Nicolas Burdisso. Gli hanno praticamente lanciato la maglia in aereo 4 ore prima della partita e l’argentino contro il Genoa è stato il migliore in campo della Roma. Spalletti non sbagliava quando chiedeva un centrale, certo lo avrebbe voluto prima ma non si può volere tutto. Positivo anche Menéz. Credo che questa sia la stagione del francesino.

HO VISTO tanti giovani italiani giocare, esordire e fare bene. Da Ranocchia a Bonucci (Bari), al tridente delle meraviglie del Parma Paloschi-Lanzafame-Biabiany (francese ma cresciuto in Italia, all’Inter) a Marrone in campo per 20 minuti nelle Juve. Servono giovani ed è un bene vederli in Serie A.

HO VISTO delle novità interessanti. Buona la prima per Javier Pastore. L’argentino, arrivato dal Palermo all’Hurracàn, non ha giocato la sua miglior partita della carriera ma ha fatto vedere buoni numeri. Appena prenderà confidenza con i nostri campi ne vedremo delle belle. Belle come le giocate e la punizione vincente di Alberto Arjol Zapater. Il mediano del Genoa imposta, recupera palloni e segna. Un grande acquisto per Preziosi, così come Rodrigo Palacio che appena entra fa ballare la difesa della Roma. Nuovo arrivato nel nostro campionato è anche Samuel Eto’o. Il camerunense si è mangiato un gol fatto, non da lui. Ha comunque segnato un rigore e per ora rispetta la sua media: un gol a partita. I numeri sono sempre stati dalla sua, anche quest’anno sarà così. Non nuovi nel nostro calcio, ma con nuove casacche sono Giampiero Ventura e Christian Panucci. Il tecnico del Bari gioca una partita a scacchi con Mourinho anticipando sempre lo Special One. Panucci è il gregario del Parma guidando la difesa emiliana con la solita classe.

Alessandro Parisi, ai microfoni di Radio Incontro durante la trasmissione ‘Diario di Bordocampo’, predica concentrazione per la prossima sfida di campionato “Contro il Bologna paradossalmente sarà più difficile che contro l’Inter. Dobbiamo dimenticare la buona prova con l’Inter ed essere umili. Siamo un gruppo giovane e pieno di entusiasmo”.

“L’entrata di Materazzi era stata sotto gli occhi di tutti. E’ stata plateale e da dietro doveva essere espulso. Credo che interventi di questo tipo debbano essere puniti nella giusta maniera” così Parisi commenta il contestato episodio di San Siro.

Il terzino sinistro del Bari commenta poi il pareggio ottenuto a San Siro “Siamo andati lì coscienti che non avevamo nulla daperdere e quindi a mente libera, cercando di fare il nostro gioco e abbiamo fatto l’impresa. Abbiamo preparata sul loro aspettato tattico, facendo movimenti e possesso palla. Il mister è stato bravo a fare i cambi giusti e noi bravi in contropiede, facendo quello che abbiamo preparato in settimana. Non abbiamo demeritato e siamo contenti così”.

It’s that time of the year for ‘Matrix’, who is celebrating his 36th birthday today.

Inter’s highly controversial, yet successful defender Marco Materazzi turns 36 today, August 19, and he has been flooded by the praises and very best wishes of the club’s supporters.

The Italian has been playing with the reigning champions since making the move from Perugia back in 2001, and over time he has gone on to win four Scudetti with the club, two Italian Cups, as well as three Super cups.

In addition to this, Materazzi was a significant member of the Italian national team’s World Cup success in 2006, as he was their equal leading scorer in the tournament, including a timely goal in the final against France.

The 36-year-old is renowned for his tough, attacking approach to matches, which has seen him come under severe scrutiny in the past.

Having spent nine seasons with the Italian giants though, the defender possesses an incredible amount of experience that will assist his club in obtaining their ultimate goal this season – the UEFA Champions League.

Sfuggito Diego Lugano, adesso Lotito pensa ad un altro nome: Marco Materazzi. Per ora è solo un’idea, visto che non c’è una trattativa in corso, ma solo dei sondaggi ufficiosi tra le due società, senza parlare ancora con il diretto interessato. Intanto arriva la smentita da parte dell’agente del difensore 36enne nerazzurro, Claudio Vigorelli, che dichiara:”E’ una trattativa che non esiste, non c’è stato ancora alcun contatto tra noi e la Lazio, e Marco non ha chiesto di lasciare l’Inter“.

La Serie A 2009-2010 è ormai alle porte e nella serata è stato servito un primo antipasto. Il tradizionale Trofeo Tim, giunto alla sua ottava edizione, ha visto la Juventus per la prima volta trionfante, ma soprattutto un Milan troppo lontano dalle due acerrimi rivali.

Prima Sfida: Inter-Juventus 6-7 (dcr)
Formazioni sperimentali sia per Mourinho che per Ferrara. Il primo gioca senza una punta di peso (Milito subentrerà nel finale) e si affida a Quaresma e Mancini sulle fasce; l’allenatore Juventino, invece, attacca con Amauri e Iaquinta davanti, supportati da Tiago trequartista. In campo anche Poulsen.
La partita è equilibrata e viene sbloccata al 25′ quando Mancini supera due uomini sulla fascia destra e dopo un rimpallo Thiago Motta supera in pallonetto Buffon. La Juve non reagisce, fino a che al 40′ un’ingenuità di Materazzi provoca un rigore per la Juventus: Julio Cesar però è strepitoso nella risposta. Ma proprio quando sembrava fatta per l’Inter, al 43′ un clamoroso errore di Rivas (subentrato dopo il rosso a Materazzi) spalanca ad Amauri un’autostrada per il pareggio.
Ai rigori sbagliano Poulsen, Samuel ed infine Santon.

Seconda Sfida: Milan-Inter 0-1
Un derby noiosissimo quello andato in scena; nel Milan esordio in Italia per Huntelaar e Roma. Le due squadre non fanno nulla per alzare i ritmi. Ci pensa allora Balotelli a ravvivarla: prima colpisce una traversa su punizione al 5′, poi al 25′ segna di testa l’1-0 finale.

Terza Sfida: Milan-Juventus 0-2
Nell’ultima sfida la Juve conferma le due punte davanti, ma al posto di Tiago come trequartista propone il giovane Yago, scuola Barcellona, così come Caceres a destra. Formazione confermata, invece, per il Milan. La Juve convince subito e al 15′ va in vantaggio con un gran gol di Amauri: completamente bucato Roma. Il Milan prova a reagire, inserendo anche Inzaghi al posto di Huntelaar, ma incassa il 2-0 con una grande azione di De Ceglie e finalizzazione (in offside non visto) di Iaquinta.

A Pescara ad alzare la coppa è il capitano (date le assenze) Giorgio Chiellini.

There are Countries, in the World, there is nothing to say about, being difficult even finding some triviality to comment on.

If you were already turning up your nose, then I’ll challenge you! Let’s list three distinguishing characteristics of the following Nations: New Zealand, Slovak Republic, South Korea

So, some of you have surely thought about the “Lord of the Rings”, while all the others remained silent, right? This is just the way it is: many places are not so popular.

This is not the case with Italy. My country is among the most widely discussed, criticized, mocked and stigmatized, but at the same time envied, praised, hankered, and loved on all over the planet.

Few lands in the world arouse a similar avalanche of contrasting emotions, and have the same ability  to be either love or despised so strongly.

Italy has beauty, history, and a galaxy of unique features both wonderful and tragic.

And what about the Italians?

Italians are those individuals who, because of either fate or choice or a mere damn luck, have to carry the weight of these beauty, history, features, wonder and tragedy.

Since ages they have always been put through clichés and prejudices, the most cruel and funny ones, like perhaps no other people on Earth.

Hence, I’m now addressing to foreigners: when someone shakes your hand and says: – “I’m Italian” – an universe opens in front of you, which can be filled with all the prejudices, the superstitions and beliefs you may have heard about the strange men and women from the Boot

(On the other hand, I’d expect from you a blank look if somebody would say: – “I’m from New Zealand, or Slovak Republic, or South-Korea” -).

The raising question is: what is true and what is false about stereotypes? Are they reliable, can you trust them, or they are merely urban legends without foundation?

This post is a short outlook on some of the most common stereotypes associated with Italians.

Five are discussed below as those that, in my humble opinion, are very close to the truth.

Nevertheless, I do hope to be able to write the same post about the Americans.

For those allergic to the gluten, Italy might be a harsh Country to live in.

Something that truly breaks Italians’ heart when they are abroad, especially those ones not used to travel, is abstinence from pasta.

The pasta in Italy is a daily ritual of life, it means art, culture and tradition. The grannies who wake up early in the morning to prepare the home-made pasta fresca, between clouds of flour and turning the rolling the pin all around, do really exist.

What in truth many foreigners cannot get is that “pasta” doesn’t mean merely “spaghetti” and “tortellini”. There are hundreds of regional specialties and an enormous amount of seasonings to try with. STEREOTYPE: THE MOST WIDESPREAD RELIGION IN ITALY IS SOCCER

The triumph in the World Cup on the 9th of July 2006 was not the biggest thrill of my “sporting” life. Schumacher and Raikkonen’s Ferrari gave me many more stronger ones.

But I’m gonna remember that night my whole life. Because it was an explosion of collective joy, irrepressible, unstoppable, never seen before in my Country. A raving and frenzied celebration, in which truly all the people run down the street to celebrate and dance crazily until dawn. An orgy of collective bodies hugging, singing, and rolling together. Amazing.

It really goes this way: Italians are not Catholic (if some claim he/she is, often behaves hypocritically). The true Faith is soccer.

Unsurprisingly, over 70% of Italians declare to be supporters of some soccer club.

The victory in the World Cup has been the most remarkable expression of homeland pride and national unity since… the victory in the World Cup of 1982.

I played my part too. My time of maximum football fervor exploded during the World Cup USA 1994. The one we lost in the final after penalties, against Brazil. And I’m somehow truly convinced it’s better to loose with Men such like Roberto Baggio than winning with beasts such like Materazzi.

STEREOTYPE: AN AVERAGE ITALIAN’S CONVERSATION CONSISTS ROUGHLY OF 8 WORDS AND 30 GESTURES

Ours is the show of a body that speaks, vibrates, throbs, moves feverish. Stretching hands and arms keeping on twisting. Passionate and theatrical: those Italians who are prey of a strong emotion, either joy or anger, are unable to refrain, exploding in a gesture that probably has no parallels in the world

Just try to stop and ask for a direction. My Country-fellow will accompany the information at least with large gestures of the arm.

The reason for such a peculiar way of communicating may have different explanations. Such like the fact we are “Mediterraneans”, sensitive, impressionable and excitable.

Maybe. But I do prefer another one.

Italy is a Promise Land for artists, inventors, painters, sculptors, architects. In one single word: makers. We are creators and manipulators of the surrounding reality, with our hands, with our sweat. Hence, the need to express ourselves as if we really wanted to grasp and disrupt the real world.

However, does an Italian body-language really exist?

STEREOTYPE: ITALIANS LOOK LIKE HAVING MEMORIZED SEVERAL FASHION CATALOGUES

Italian Fashion

Italians, especially the Italian girls, are extremely fashionable. Style, neatness , elegance. Plus, also and above all, brand.

You won’t see us with a single messed hair, any clashing nuance, or any slovenly detail. Just go to the main squares of the city-centres on Saturday afternoon or to the clubs on Friday night, but even go to the libraries and to many university faculties: you’ll notice plenty of boys and girls who look like on-sale products of the star system.

Here the care of your appearance is meticulous, but at the same time effortless and spontaneous. We do that with great naturalness. In very truth, it is far less morbid and manic than it might seem.

The Italians hold the unshakeable conviction of being the most stylish people of the whole Universe. Nevertheless, the examples given by tourists and foreign travelers have contributed, year after year, to remove all doubts about it: the flighty combinations of colors worn by the Brits, or the white socks on Germans’ feet (now the Czechs’) have left unforgettable memories you may still hear about.

So much love for him/herself, however, can sometimes be a little odd, especially concerning guys. An Austrian girl once told me: – “Italian guys are very good-looking. Such a pity they all look like a bit gay” -.

And then, unfortunately, there is the tamarro. An weird creature, widespread in the cities of central-south and in the northern countryside. You may be able to recognize it immediately, since it looks like escaped from a zoo or, at worst, from a lunatic asylum (where there were still asylums).

The tamarro has no elegance, neatness or style. But, alas, in an attempt to acquire them, it stuffs him/herself with fashion brands without any rational logic. The tamarro’s typical look, besides a disturbing hairdo and an overdose of sun-lamps, consists of a belt with the huge D&G brand well shown up, Rich jeans worn to the knees, massive sunglasses covering all the face. Often you may see some abnormal piercing or some tribal or gothic tattoo (although the tamarro has no clue of what means “tribal” or “gothic”).

It’s not been yet discovered yet what a tamarro eats, but scientific studies have proved it is absolutely harmless to humans. (Referring to the previous topic, a conversation of a tamarro is made of 1 grunt and 3 mimic or gestures).

Mamma's Love

Italy is not a land of poets, saints, sailors, and Berlusconists. Italy is a Country of mums, and sons/daughters of mamma.

Let’s consider a manager who returns in his/her hotel-room after a business meeting, a student who goes back to his/her flat after an exam, or a soccer-player who leaves the stadium after a match, or even a Mafia’s hitmen who runs back to his hiding place after committing his crime. All these characters have something in common: while I’m writing, they are, all of them, calling mamma at home.

The Mother is the pillar of Italian society, the backbone, the Northern Star. The strength of the relationship mother-son/daughter cannot be detected anywhere else in the world.

She is an immanent presence, permanent and transcendent. Even when, apparently, she’s not around you can feel her watching you. Because she is thinking about you, dreaming of you, she’s talking about you with other people. You definitely feel her gaze on you.

One of the phrases that you may often hear by Italians, especially in sinful situation, is: – “If my mum could see me right now!” -. That is: get angry, Guardian Angel. But, please, don’t tell mum.

And it’s true that, in some way, Italian kids’ childhood is extended indefinitely. Every time going back home, they will find their favorite dish, the shirt ironed, the bed tidied up with clean sheets.

Therefore, I feel forced to say again what I claimed before: it’s hard to get tired, it’s difficult to blame us. Rather, envy our mums.

Nevertheless, so much love might lead to objectively questionable behaviors. Only in Italy, mamma buys the underwear for her teenage sons.

All we go for "Sun, Beach, Love"

Ci sono Paesi nel mondo sui quali non c’è nulla da dire. Posti a proposito dei quali è difficile persino scovare qualche banalità da commentare.

Se steste già storcendo il naso vi sfido! Elencatemi tre caratteri distintivi delle seguenti Nazioni: Nuova Zelanda, Repubblica Slovacca, Corea del Sud.

Qualcuno di voi ha pensato al Signore degli Anelli, e gli altri zitti, vero? Molti luoghi, infatti, non sono poi così conosciuti.

Non è il caso dell’Italia. Il mio Paese è tra i più dibattuti, criticati, derisi e stigmatizzati, ma allo stesso tempo invidiati, elogiati, ambiti e decantati del pianeta.

Poche terre al mondo scatenano la stessa contrastante valanga di emozioni, hanno la stessa capacità di farsi amare e disprezzare con tanta forza allo stesso tempo.

L’Italia possiede bellezza, storia, e una galassia di peculiarità, sfaccettature, diversità insieme meravigliose e tragiche.

E gli Italiani?

Gli Italiani sono quegli individui che, un po’ per destino, o un po’ per scelta o un po’ per culo, portano il peso di tale bellezza, storia, peculiarità, meraviglia e tragedia.

Da sempre sono schiacciati da cliché, preconcetti e luoghi comuni, tra i più crudeli e divertenti, come forse nessun altro popolo sulla Terra.

Mi rivolgo agli stranieri: quando qualcuno stringe la vostra mano e dice: – “Sono Italiano”- vi si apre dinnanzi una galassia, che potete riempire con tutte le storie immaginifiche, le superstizioni e le credenze che avete sentito a proposito di questo bizzarro popolo.

(E’ legittimo aspettersi, invece, uno sguardo vuoto se quel qualcuno vi dicesse: -”Sono neozelandese, o slovacco, o sudocreano”-).

La domanda è: quanto c’è di vero, e quanto di falso, negli stereotipi? Sono attendibili, ci si può fidare, oppure sono leggende metropolitane senza fondamento?

Questo post è una breve presa di visione su alcuni degli stereotipi più diffusi, associati agli Italiani.

I cinque discussi in questo post sono quelli che, a mio parere, si avvicinano molto a verità.

Spero di poter presto scrivere lo stesso post a proposito degli americani.

Ormai manca un mese a Richmond.

STEREOTIPO: GLI ITALIANI MANGIANO TONNELLATE DI PASTA

TRUTH: 80%

Bigoli, pasta tipica del Veneto

Una delle cose che più spezza il morale di un Italiano che si trova all’estero, specie quello non abituato a viaggiare, è l’astinenza dalla pasta.

La pasta in Italia è un quotidiano rito di Vita, è arte, cultura, è tradizione. Le nonne che si svegliano al mattino per preparare l’impasto con le proprie mani, tra nuvole di farina e giri di mattarello, esistono davvero.

La cosa che sfugge a molti stranieri, è che “pasta” non significa meramente “spaghetti” e ” tortellini”. Ci sono la miriade di specialità regionali, nonché l’enorme quantità di condimenti che possono accompagnarsi. Le possibilità di variare sono (quasi) infinite, e tutte a loro modo peculiari e deliziose.

Difficile stancarci, impossibile biasimarci. Piuttosto, invidiateci le nostre nonne.

STEREOTIPO: IL CALCIO E’ LA RELIGIONE PIU’ DIFFUSA TRA GLI ITALIANI

TRUTH: 90%

La vittoria della Coppa del Mondo, il 9 Luglio 2006, non è stata la più grande emozione sportiva della mia Vita. La Ferrari di Schumacher e Raikkonen me ne ha regalato di più forti.

Però quella notte me la ricorderò tutta la Vita, perché è stata un’esplosione di gioia collettiva incontenibile, irrefrenabile, mai vista prima nel mio Paese. Una festa delirante e travolgente, in cui tutta, ma proprio tutta, la gente è scesa per strada a festeggiare e ballare fino all’alba. Un’orgia collettiva di corpi che si abbracciavano, cantavano, si rotolavano insieme. Pazzesco.

E’ proprio così: gli italiani non sono affatto cattolici, piuttosto potrebbero definirsi moralisti ed perbenisti (spesso ipocriti). La vera Fede è quella del pallone.

Più dell’80% degli italiani si dichiarano almeno simpatizzanti di qualche squadra di calcio.

La vittoria nella Coppa del Mondo è stata la più importante manifestazione di orgoglio nazionale e di fierezza patria da… la vittoria nella Coppa del Mondo del 1982.

Per quanto mi riguarda, il mio momento di massimo fervore calcistico è esploso durante i mondiali USA 1994. Quelli perduti in finale ai rigori contro il Brasile. Se poi sia meglio perdere con gli Uomini come Roberto Baggio, o vincere con le bestie come Marco Materazzi è un’altra questione.

In questo video uno scorcio di Napoli la notte della vittoria ai mondiali di calcio. (Ho scelto apposta la città più passionale d’Italia, me le vado proprio a cercare!).

STEREOTIPO: LA CONVERSAZIONE DI UN ITALIANO SI ARTICOLA DI 8 PAROLE E 30 TRA GESTI E MIMICHE

TRUTH: 70%

Il nostro è lo show di un corpo che parla, vibra, pulsa, si muove febbrile. Mani che si allungano, braccia che si contorcono. Plateali, pirotecnici, scenografici: gli italiani preda di una forte emozione, sia essa gioia o rabbia, non riescono proprio a trattenersi, esplodono in una gestualità che forse non ha paragoni nel mondo

Ma fermatevi semplicemente a chiedere un’indicazione. Il mio/La mia connazionale accompagnerà l’informazione almeno con ampi gesto del braccio.

La ragione di questa peculiarità del nostro modo di esprimersi può avere diverse spiegazioni. L’essere “mediterranei”, sensibili, impressionabili ed eccitabili.

Forse. Io però ne preferisco un’altra.

Gli italiani sono un popolo di artisti, di inventori, pittori, scultori, architetti. Gente “che fa”, creatori e manipolatori della realtà circostante, con le proprie mani, con il proprio sudore. Da qui, il bisogno di esprimerci come se volessimo davvero afferrare e scompigliare il mondo reale.

Ma esiste davvero un body-language italiano?

STEREOTIPO: OGNI ITALIANO/A SEMBRA AVER MEMORIZZATO  INTERI CATALOGHI DELLE RIVISTE DI MODA

Moda Italiana

Gli italiani, e soprattutto le italiane, sono davvero fashionable. Stile, gusto, eleganza. E, anche e soprattutto, griffa.

Mai un capello fuori posto, un colore che stoni, un particolare trascurato. Dalle piazze delle città il sabato pomeriggio ai clubs il venerdì sera, ma perfino nelle biblioteche e in molte facoltà universitarie: ragazzi e ragazze che sembrano alla disperata ricerca di un provino nel mondo dello spettacolo.

La cura del proprio aspetto è meticolosa ma allo stesso tempo spontanea. Ci viene con grande naturalezza, ammettiamolo. In realtà, è molto meno morbosa e maniacale di quello che, ad occhi esterni, potrebbe sembrare.

Gli italiani hanno la convinzione inossidabile di essere il popolo più stiloso dell’intera Galassia. Anche perché gli esempi di turisti e viaggiatori stranieri hanno contribuito negli anni a rimuovere ogni dubbio a proposito: gli estrosi abbinamenti di colori degli inglesi e i calzetti bianchi dei tedeschi (oggi dei cechi) hanno lasciato tracce indelebili di cui ancora oggi si parla.

Tanto amore di sé, specie nei maschi, può talvolta stupire. Un’amica austriaca una volta mi disse: – “I ragazzi italiani sono davvero attraenti. Peccato sembrino tutti gay”-.

E poi, purtroppo, c’è il tamarro. Creatura diffusa soprattutto nelle città del centro-sud e nelle campagne del Nord. Si riconosce subito, in quanto sembra scappato da uno zoo o, nei casi peggiori, da un manicomio (se esistessero ancora i manicomi).

Il tamarro non ha eleganza, gusto o stile. Però, ahimé, nel tentativo di acquisirli, si copre di griffe senza alcuna logica intelleggibile. Il look tipico del tamarro è costituito, olte all’improbabile pettinatura e una dose eccessiva di lampade solari, da una cintura con cubitale marchio D&G in vista, jeans Richmond alle ginocchia, occhiali da sole che coprono tutto il volto. Spesso spunta anche qualche piercings o un abnorme tatuaggio tribale o gotico (pur il tamarro non avendo la più pallida idea di cosa significhino “tribale” e “gotico”).

Non si è ancora scoperto di cosa si cibi il tamarro, ma studi scientifici hanno dimostrato che è assolutamente innocuo per l’uomo. (Rifacendoci al topic precedente, una conversazione di un tamarro si compone di 1 grugnito e 3 tra mimiche e gesti).

STEREOTIPO: IN MAMMA WE TRUST

TRUTH: 100%

Mamma Italiana

L’Italia non è terra di poeti, santi, navigatori, e berlusconiani. L’Italia è un paese di mamme, e di figli/e di mamma.

Un manager che torna nella sua camera di albergo dopo una riunione, uno studente che torna nella sua stanza dopo un esame, un calciatore che esce dallo stadio dopo una partita, e perfino un sicario di mafia che torna al suo nascondiglio dopo il crimine. Tutti questi personaggi hanno qualcosa in comune: mentre io scrivo stanno, tutti assieme, telefonando alla mamma.

La mamma è il pilastro della società italiana, ne è la spina dorsale, la stella polare. La forza del rapporto madre/figlio non ha eguali in nessun’altra parte del mondo.

E’ presenza immanente, permanente, trascendete. Non c’è, ma ne senti la presenza. Ti pensa, ti sogna, parla di te con la gente di continuo.  Avverti il suo sguardo su di te.

Una delle frasi che spesso senti pronunciare dagli italiani, specie se in situazioni peccaminose, è: -”Se mi vedesse mia madre!”-. Insomma, Angelo custode arrabbiati pure, ma non dirlo alla mamma.

Ed è vero che, in qualche modo, l’infanzia di noi maschi italiani è prolungata all’infinito. Tutte le volte che torneremo a casa, troveremo il nostro piatto preferito, la camicia stirata, il letto rifatto.

Mi sento quindi costretto a ripetere quello che ho detto prima: difficile stancarci, difficile biasimarci. Piuttosto invidiateci le nostre mamme.

Tanto amore, tuttavia, ha degenerazioni oggettivamente discutibili. Solo in Italia, le mamme comprano le mutande ai loro figli adolescenti maschi.

We naderen het einde van onze cultverkiezing. Dat doen we met het laatste decennium der cultdecennia: de jaren 2000. De cultvoetballer heeft inmiddels zijn status en sporen verdiend. Dat met dank aan de Jupilers, Toto’s, Holland Casino’s, Talpa’s en KPN’s van deze wereld. Zij slingeren namelijk met een ongekende frequentie het voetbal van alle rangen en standen onze woonkamer in. Kwantiteit lijkt daarbij belangrijker dan kwaliteit. Wat hebben we een boel slechte potten voorbij zien komen zeg! We noemen een kale Langeleegte op een stoffige vrijdagavond waar Veendam en Helmond de brilstand opvoeren. Live…

Waar het voetbal dus duidelijk achterbleef, neemt de cultvoetballer echter een enorme vlucht. Zo krijgt de Jupilervoetballer ineens een podium waarop hij zich kan profileren. En ook de Hoofdklasse-speler is tegenwoordig geen onbekende meer. En ja, die jongens hebben dus geen mediatraining gehad. Waarvoor dank overigens.

Maar waar te beginnen? Het aanbod is gevarieerd en omvangrijk. Neem bijvoorbeeld de omhooggevallen net niet in Ferrari rijdende glamourboy die toevallig ook voetbalt. Of de waarom heeft die man nog geen reality-soap-speler. De vijver is vol. Heeft u een hengel? Onze suggesties:

- Sjaak Polak: Sjaak is het voorbeeld van de cultvoetballer anno 2009. Sjaak is duidelijk van het type waarom heeft die man nog geen reality soap? Dus John ende andere Mollen: wil je kijkcijfers? Volg Sjaak een maand met een camera en je hebt een hit.

- Marco Materazzi: Tja, wat kunnen we over deze man zeggen. Continu balancerend op de grens van fatsoen. Door velen bestempeld als gestoord, maar ook weer bejubeld in eigen land. Andy was zelfs een beetje bang voor hem. Hoe dan ook, cultproof!
