I’m typing this during the action packed second-half of extra time at Stade de France where the score is one apiece. The Irish started the match strongly and Robbie Keane, deservedly,  fired one in from a Damian Duff pass on 32nd minute.  The match was still tied at the end of full-time.

Govou’s goal in 102 minute was ruled off-side then Gallas scored a minute later, from a double Henry hand ball, much to the disbelief of the Irish present. At the end of extra time cue huge sighs of French relief all-round accompanied by much gallic hugging and kissing. Yes, the French, along with the Slovenians, Greeks, Algerians and Portuguese are off to South Africa.

Obviously, L’Equipe has been building its coverage since Sunday and I’m thinking they’ll easily fill 6 pages tomorrow plus a couple of full-page adverts from grateful sponsors.

I was somewhat mystified to learn that Yoann Gourcuff had been voted (only) the 3rd best looking footballer in France until I learned that it was by the readers of a gay magazine – that explains it. Don’t worry Yoann, you’re still top dog with the girls.

I’ve finished reading Jens Voigt’s book “Man Muss Kaempfen!” (one must fight) and it’s pretty much what one would expect but I was left wanting more. Most of the narrative surrounds his Tour de France rides for firstly Credit Agricole and then CSC, where he’s equally complimentary about Roger Legeay, Bjarne Riis and his teammates. I’d have liked a bit more nitty, gritty. But in Germany, post-Puerto, I guess something anodyne was just what the doctor ordered. Jens comes across as a hardworking, reliable team mate and devoted family man who believes that if you don’t give it a go, you don’t stand a chance of winning – very true.

For a complete contrast, I’ve turned to “Vie et Mort de Marco Pantani” (Life and Death of Marco Pantani) written by L’Equipe’s own Philippe Brunel.

This’ll be the third book I’ve read on the topic and it appears to give more of an insider’s view than the other two: The Death of Marco Pantani by Matt Rendell and, the compilation, Marco Pantani: The Legend of a Tragic Champion. Shame I never got to see him dance on those pedals.

When fellow journalism post grad student and sport blogger, Josh Pettitt, came up with the idea of having a ‘best sports icon of the noughties’ blog debate, I wanted to do something different.

Who is a viable, yet thought-provoking candidate, I thought? After considering Ronnie O’Sullivan with his marvelously-idiosyncratic approach, and (the original, portly, R9) Ronaldo, I decided this was not an accolade to be given to someone whose greatness must be explained in detail. It must be fairly self explanatory.

It is for this reason that I feel the greatest sportsman of the naughties is seven-times Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong.

His achievements in cycling are well documented, as are his past medical struggles; yet there is a suspicion, due to cycling’s endemic doping problems, that he is somehow undeserving of our esteem.

Firstly, rather than extoll his illustrious, yet well documented career, I feel I need to snare this elephant in the room, shoot it, and use its tusks to murder anyone still pedaling this pathetic, xenophobic myth.

Lance Armstrong is undoubtedly the most tested athlete in the world. So why hasn’t he been caught?

To my mind the only answer is: he’s innocent. High profile doping cases such as Marco Pantani and Ivan Basso have tarnished the name of the sport, but the practice is by no means uniform. The only real evidence to suggest Armstrong dopes is his imperiously-consistent form. Oh, and the constant whining from the French that this yank dare beat them over the Alps and Pyrannees.

The second argument against his coronation as the noughties’ best sportsman concerns his team.

For anyone unfamiliar with road cycling, the Johan Bruyneel managed US Postal service team (which later became Discovery), held a masochistic-like dominance during Armstrong’s reign.

Super domestiques (a cycling term meaning blokes who bust their lungs for their leader, only to by dropped in the final miles and finish last) like George Hincapie, Levi Leipheimer, Roberto Heras, and Floyd Landis, many of who went on to be team leaders themselves, would take turns at the front of the peleton, turning the screw under which their competitors crumbled.

From this launch pad, with his rivals cracking, Lance would launch. The fittest men on the planet attacking each other on the world’s steepest mountains in one its most tactical sports is, at its best, unrivaled in drama. In this, Lance was king.

Surely then, this team advantage negates any claim of Armstrong’s individual greatness? Not quite.

Just as Mark Cavendish has proved he is currently the fastest man in road cycling despite needing his team to get there, Jan Ullrich, Lance’s closest competitor for most of his career, was also backed by the flashy T-Mobile team which delivered his own Maillot Jaune in 1998.

Although his team were an inexorable facet of his dominance, the Texan was still chosen as the best: the man capable of converting all this team work when the final explosion to the line was required.

His status as an icon can hardly be quarreled with either. As active in his charity work as he ever was in the saddle, his story from 40% prognosis to legend is one of the most remarkable in modern sporting history.

If, on top of his seven tour wins and remarkable 3rd place comeback this year at the venerable age of 37 (despite being ordered not to attack team leader, Alberto Contador), you are in need of any more convincing, here are my top three Armstrong career moments.

1) “The Look”
At their best, there are few sporting occasions quite as dramatic as the top road cyclists in the world attacking each other on a steep climb. In 2001, Lance Armstrong was looking for his 3rd tour win. He looks his career nemesis, Jan Ullrich, in the eye in a display of concrete self belief before annihilating the German’s Tour de France aspirations for another year.

2) Off Road
2003, Tour de France Stage 9. Armstrong and ace climber Joseba Beloki are chasing Kazakhstani, Alexander Vinokourov. Beloki’s tyre glue melts under the intense speed and 50 degree heat of the day and what follows beggars belief. It may seem like it gives Armstrong an advantage, but try riding through a field on a finely tuned road bike and see how, if by any miracle you don’t crash, it affects your race momentum. This is true bike-handling class.

3) Sestriere
In 1999, this was one of the first times the world had seen Armstrong’s post-cancer form. He simply blows the field away, eventually winning the tour by a staggering 7mins 36secs.

Erst eine Woche ist vorbei, seit wir mit dem SF im Klotemer «Schluefweg» nochmals Abschied nahmen mit Fige Hollenstein: Gotthard intonierte «Heaven», die Lichter gingen aus, Wunderkerzen an. Das rührte auch einen gestandenen Hockey-Profi, der noch alles weggeputzt hatte, was zwischen ihm und der Bande stand, zu ein paar feuchten Augen. Immerhin hatte er sein Abschiedsspiel vor Tausenden in einem würdige Rahmen gegeben und das irgendwie mit Klasse, denn ein Mann muss bekanntlicherweise in seinen Stiefeln sterben.

Daran halten sich bei weitem nicht alle, und die meisten erzählen bloss irgendeinen Stiefel an einer Pressekonferenz. Dabei sind diese Rücktritte ja ganz einfach zu erraten: Man miete in einer grösseren Stadt wie Wien oder Zürich (Basel? Wir sagten: grössere Stadt) einen Saal in einem der einschlägigen Hotels, rufe eine Pressekonferenz ein und in dem Moment, wo alle Mikrofone und Objektive offen sind versage einem die Stimme (einzig die Tränen versiegen nicht). Presst dann so ein Urvieh von einem Sportler (Bankdrücken 140 kg) nur die Lippen zusammen (nachdem er jahrelang an solchen Pressekonferenzen eine dicke Lippe riskiert hat) und bringt keinen Ton mehr heraus, kann man getrost der Chefredaktion simsen: Rücktritt.

Einmal mehr gesehen bei Hermann Maier. Auch er sah so aus, als ob jemand dem Herminator die Duracell-Batterie aus dem Rückenfach genommen hätte. Vor sich lag, wie der erbeutete Skalp eines erlegten Feindes, sein gelber Raiffeisen-Helm. Hinter sich stand die Wiener Hofburg. Kann sich ein Flachauer Naturbursche einen falscheren Ort aussuchen (er musste auf die Einflüsterer des Helmsponsors hören, die nochmals Awareness mit ihm erreichen wollten: Vorstandsdirektor Magister Url, Direktor Ingenieur Magister Jeindl sowie Dipl.Vw. Dipl.Inf. Wirsching)? Und der Mandli weinte.

Grössere vor ihm haben geweint – aber nicht als es zu Ende war! Caesar stand nach seiner acht Jahre dauernden Niederwerfung Galliens in der Provinz Gallia Cisalpina (übrigens eine historisch besehen pannenfreie Region) mit seinen Legionen am Rubicon. Und wie er die für Rom folgenschwere Entscheidung getroffen hatte, den Fluss zu überschreiten (gleichbedeutend mit Bürgerkrieg), wandte er sich an seine Legionen und sprach über das Zeichen der Götter. Dabei weinte er und zerriss sich das Gewand vor der Brust. Das war wahre Hingabe an eine Sache. Heute aber weinen nur noch Skifahrer, wenn sie vom Rennbetrieb Abschied nehmen.

Was das SF damit zu tun hat? Wenn Radprofi Markus Zberg nach einem schweren Unfall (Beckenbruch), in der Erfüllung seiner Pflicht, den Rücktritt vom Aktivsport bekannt gibt, vermeldet unser Pipifax-TV diese Nachricht in den Kurznews (Zberg war ja nur Zweiter an der Rad-WM vor zehn Jahren und trug die Fahne des Schweizer Radsports hoch, als es keinen Ösi Camenzind mehr und noch keinen Cancellara gab). Wenn aber irgend so ein Österreichischer Buab in Wien seinen Rücktritt erklärt, dann sind wir fast live dabei. Wenigstens war das ganze nicht völlig humorfrei. Wir hätten uns vorgestellt, dass vor internationalen Medien hochdeutsch gesprochen würde. Der Herminator klang aber eher nach einer Mischung aus dem Governor of California und einem Zürcher («om heutigen Dog geht ein Lebensobschnitt bla bla bla…»). Da loben wir uns den designierten neuen deutschen Aussenminister Westerwelle, der auf seine Weigerung, an der PK Englisch zu reden lakonisch meinte: «Es ist Deutschland hier!!» (vielleicht sagte er ja auch mit seltsamer Aussprache: This is Deutschland here, weil ihm das Wort Germany kurzfristig entfallen war). Der Herminator hätte es kürzer gesagt: «Dös is Österreich!» Pfüäti!

P.S. Der Radsporthimmel hat eine zweite, jung verstorbene Legende aufgenommen. Nach Marco Pantani, der grosse Unverstandene, kehr nun auch Frank Vandenbroucke heim. Diep geraakt zijn we door het onverwachte overlijden van ons idool. (L.T.)

He’ll never come back. Oder dann nur so, wie im – prophetischen – Video “Thriller”

The cycling community was shocked Monday with the news that pro cyclist Frank Vandenbroucke had passed away before his time at the young age of 34 of a pulmonary embolism.

VDB as he was know was an extremely talented cyclist but equally plagued by family and drug problems. His life and passing reminds all cyclists of the life and passing of another talented but troubled soul the great Marco Pantani who was also 34.

The terrible news of Belgian cyclist Frank Vandenbrouke’s death immediately reminded us of another tortured soul, Marco Pantani.

If you go back and read the opening paragraph in each of these news stories, there’s a sad and eerie similarity:

“Marco Pantani was found dead in room 5D in the Le Rose residence hotel in Rimini, Italy.” “Frank Vandenbroucke has died while on holiday in Senegal. The 34-year-old Belgian cyclist was found in his hotel room.”

They were prodigies, national heroes, idolized in Italy and Belgium. But then came the doping suspensions and the steady downward spiral as they suffered trying to regain their former glory.

Friends did the best they could while cycling fans around the world watched the tragic fall. Even at a great distance it was heart-breaking to see.

They both died lost and alone in a hotel room. Vandenbroucke said not long ago that “all that counts is the language of the pedals.” For Frank and Marco the simple joy they once felt riding a bike had gone and sadly there was nothing left to say.

Two of seven guests today took part in the Marco Pantani Cycling Sportive. As we are based in Bourg d’Oisans we took them up to Les Deux Alpes for the start at 8AM. John and Simon had a long hot day in the saddle with temperatures hitting 39 C. The route was slightly changed this year missing out the climb of Villard Reculas up to Alpe d’Huez and instead cycling up to bend 16 of Alpe d’Huez before traversing across to Freney d’Oisans and then the final clim of Les Deux Alpes.

The rest of us cycled up to St Christophe en Oisans and La Barade  and back !

Jag älskar duellerna. Det är dem man vill ha. Detta är kanske den häftigaste duellen som jag kan komma på. Rasmussen och Contadors battle för två år sedan var bra också. Den gula tröjan och utmanaren sida vid sida. De tittar på varandra, någon ökar, de andra lägger sig på rulle osv. Det kan inte bli mycket häftigare. Mont Ventoux, även kallat det kala berget, är stentufft när de kommer upp över trädgränsen och får möta vinden. Kollar man på flaggor och saker på marken syns det rätt väl hur mycket det blåser. Notera också hur lätt Armstrong klarar att dra ifrån de andra. Det är ingen som klarar att gå med. Beloki och Ullrich ligger kvar när Armstrong satsar. Det är en hård attack han sätter in och det dröjer inte många sekunder innan Armstrong är ifatt Pantani. Det är för övrigt Jörgen Leth som kommenterar. Det kommer att finnas anledningar till att gå tillbaka till Mont Ventoux om några veckor.

Det är svårt att bortse från Alpe ‘Huez. Det går bara inte och speciellt inte denna händelse. I klippet segar sig Pantani fram i täten och hans attack ser inte särskilt märkvärdig ut. Det är mer en långsam fartökning som de andra inte klarar av att följa med på. Ullrich, i den gula tröja, gör allt för att följa med men det går inte. Dock så lyckas Ullrich vinna sammandraget det året. Pantani vinner tillslut etappen med 47 sekunder före just Ullrich. Tiden som Pantani gör här är fortfarande den snabbaste tiden uppför Alpe d’Huez, 37 minuter och 35 sekunder. Pantani vann här två gånger, även 1995, och har tre tider på topp 10 uppför denna stigning. Då ska så klart detta klipp få vara med.

L’Italia ha dato i natali a grandi artisti, scienziati, musicisti, sportivi: in particolare, italiani sono stati grandissimi campioni di ciclismo, tra cui l’indimenticato Marco Pantani.
Nativo di Cesenatico, egli ha emozionato tutti gli appassionati per anni con le sue imprese agonistiche nonché per la sua storia, terminata tragicamente una sera del 2004.
La sua terra però vuole ricordarlo dedicandogli spazi espositivi, manifestazioni sportive ed agonistiche, al fine di ricordare la sua figura e di portarla ad esempio per tutti i giovani che desiderano intraprendere una carriera ciclistica.
Sabato 6 giugno si terrà la sesta edizione del Memorial Marco Pantani e prevederà una gara su due ruote tra professionisti: novità assoluta del 2009 l’inversione del percorso, stavolta da Cesena a Cesenatico.
La competizione inizierà alle ore 11.00 in Piazza della Libertà a Cesena e prevederà un itinerario di circa 184 km attraverso Monte Vecchio, Borello, San Carlo, Carpineta, Calisese, Longiano, Savignano sul Rubicone per terminare a Cesenatico, in Piazza Marconi.

Non mancate a questo affascinante evento dedicato ad un grande atleta romagnolo, Marco Pantani.

Il 5 giugno 1957 è nato, a Milano, Enrico Ruggeri, lo ricordo con un’estratto dell’intervista che gli ho fatto il 21 febbraio 2004, in occasione di un suo concerto al Palais Saint-Vincent

Dentro di lui batte un cuore da miope, ma gli occhi sono quelli del musicista: lo “sguardo incuriosito di una misteriosa razza senza colore” capace di mettere in musica perfino quello che le donne non dicono. Occhi che hanno ammaliato anche il pubblico che il 21 febbraio,  nonostante la nevicata, ha affollato il Palais Saint-Vincent per un concerto che ha visto Enrico Ruggeri rileggere i suoi cavalli battaglia (da “Contessa” a “Primavera a Sarajevo”) alla luce del sound del suo ultimo Cd, “Gli occhi del musicista” appunto, che guarda molto alla musica etnica. «Credo molto all’Europa- ci ha spiegato- a quell’asse musicale che va dai Balcani all’Irlanda, dal Bosforo alla Finlandia, dalla Russia al nostro caro Mediterraneo. Credo sia più facile che le novità possano uscire da lì, e, soprattutto, che lì si trovino terreni più incontaminati che non la classica canzone pop. Quando ho cominciato a fare l’ultimo Cd non sapevo esattamente cosa volevo, ma sapevo esattamente cosa non volevo: non volevo il suono FM, non volevo americanismi, non volevo che il mio disco facesse la fine dl 99,9% dei dischi che escono attualmente che si assomigliano tutti. Quindi sono arrivato in studio con le canzoni ed ho fatto come si faceva una volta: a computer spento ho suonato le canzoni ai ragazzi. Poi, piano piano, si sono trovati gli arrangiamenti, finchè, ad un certo punto, abbiamo deciso che era venuto il momento di registrare.» Ne è nato un mucchietto di belle canzoni, come “A un passo dalle nuvole” e “Andiamo”, che hanno ulteriormente ampliato la sua già ampia tavolozza espressiva. «La varietà è uno dei miei obiettivi. Quando vado ai concerti dopo quattro pezzi, se non mi annoio, di sicuro ho già capito tutto. E’ raro assistere ad un concerto che spiazzi un po’, ed è, proprio, quello, invece, il mio obiettivo principale. Mi farebbe piacere che, a seconda del momento in cui uno spettatore entra, pensi si tratti di concerti diversi.» Accanto ai suoi infallibili “pezzi per spiriti romantici”, Ruggeri ha toccato tematiche come la guerra (“Lettera dal fronte”), la follia (“La preghiera del matto”) e il crudele consumismo che dalle cose si è esteso alle persone (“Turnover”). Quest’ultima non ti sembra perfetta per spiegare la tragica fine di Marco Pantani? «Questo è un mondo organizzato su misura per quelli a cui tutto va bene. Se sei nel gruppo di testa hai a disposizione un mondo meraviglioso che ti asseconda perché ti da opportunità, carte di credito, viaggi, beauty farm… Nel momento, però, in cui non sei più nel gruppo di testa, o, ancora peggio, non lo sei mai stato perché sei povero, brutto, handicappato, nero, omosessuale o qualsiasi altra cosa, allora il mondo tende a farti fuori. A questo bisogna aggiungere il maledetto mito dell’efficienza. Essere vincenti è un diktat terribile che sta rovinando gran parte del nostro contesto sociale. Ciò fa sì che un’innocua parola nata nel gergo calcistico come turnover sia, ormai, diventata una specie di spada di Damocle su tutti noi: se non sei perfetto arriva un altro che ti mette da parte. E’ il turnover porta ad effetti tragici. Il caso di Pantani ne è la conseguenza estrema, l’inevitabile conclusione per chi non riesce a sopportare l’anonimato dopo essere stato un numero uno».

Todos tenemos un lado oscuro, Rafa Nadal también. El yerno perfecto, el objeto de deseo de toda quinceañera, el ídolo de chavales, el admirado por los los protohombres lectores del As o el Marca, lleva dentro al mismo hijodeputa que tú que yo. Siempre he recelado de la gente que niega su parte menos lustrosa, tanto como de los que no son capaces de dominarla y aparecen en la puerta de un instituto con una escopeta, una mochila llena de balas, y decenas de soluciones potenciales.

Cuando murieron Marco Pantani, o chava Jiménez, los periódicos reflejaron al ídolo devorado por un incontrolable impulso y, lejos de callar -que es lo menos que deberían haber hecho- enjuiciaron las vidas de los tipos, como el tendero que mete la mierda de la barredura debajo del felpudo. La gente actúa así. Tópicos. Que si las alas derretidas, que si el gigante con pies de barro, que si suputamadre. Todos somos gigantes con pies de barro. Todos podemos pulsar el botón nuclear. Todos llevamos dentro un pequeño y pestilente ser capaz de mandarlo todo a tomar por culo. Y ustedes lo saben porque alguna vez ha aparecido y lo ha mandado todo al garete. Y usted lo sabe y yo también.

Por eso cuando me encuentro con el típico mamón de mierda, con el típico santo que baja al mundo en el cuerpo de Ramón García, Christian Gálvez, Matías Prats, Andrés Iniesta, o Fernando Romai, seres maravillosos, sin mácula, capaces de venderte una bebida isotónica o un zurullo para meterte por el culo, con la misma credibilidad y calado, un escalofrío de asco recorre mi médula espinal. Asco ante lo ridículo de lo humano, ante el miedo a verse. Los publicistas, que son unos hijosdeputa siderales, pero tontos no, utilizaron el otro lado. Se multiplicaron los anuncios tormentosos con James Dean, Tarantino, Edward Norton, o fondos musicales de Lou Reed. Tampoco nos valen. Los monstruos ingeridos por la máquina no me valen.

Lo que persigo es que me reconozcan que lo ven, que mirando en el espejo, atravesándolo, son capaces de ver a ese oscuro animal que habita en cada uno de nosotros, y ese no hay publicista que tenga cojones a tocarlo. Y Rafa Nadal, también lo ve.

PD: Por menos de este post, tendría al sheriff de Wisconsin pisándome los talones.

I spent  the afternoon at Lido di Venezia, watching the Giro and all the human world turning around this sport event and mediatic circus. In the morning, it was Nathalie that, with a facebook reply to a twitter message of mines, signalled that there was nothing normal today, everything was gonna out of the ordinary (time is out of joint- Hamlet, and http://books.google.it/books?id=sEENbAP5FZsC&printsec=frontcover&dq=derrida&hl=en&source=gbs_book_other_versions_r&cad=1_2#PPA3,M1). That was an important message for me, since it prepared my mind to the  special events of the day.
Let us say that the cyclists I most  like after Ivan & the Pirate, are the two new generation ones, that stimulate father sentiments in me since when I first saw them in action, years ago: Andy Schleck and Mark Cavendish. Last of my thoughta was that the latter would have been, at end of the day,  the first to wear legitimately (as a cadeau, the Sindaco, my friend  Massimo Cacciari had already got one) Dolce & Gabbana’s pink jersey.

I come down from the vaporetto at Lido, just in time for a lucky first shot (photo: GIRO 1; 3:55 pm – http://twitpic.com/4vmzi ) of Mark and the Columbia boyz marching to their triumph, almost no one had betted upon. A couple of minutes before their arrival. Then I met Ivan twice, at very short distance:
- in the middle of a bit of crowd, just before departure (photos – GIRO 6 to 12, 4:25 to 4:30 – twitpic);
- 2nd time, more intimate  - GIRO 19; 4:58, http://twitpic.com/4vu0v/full see also a reproduction below  - in a narrow street, almost the two of us and no one else, when from the arrival he was getting to Liquigas meeting place, at trattoria Favorita, via Duodo 33. I knew in advance it was him (no adivination, except being there at the right time right place, walking through streets I’d never been before; but all the Liquigas team had passed by, so last he came  – no surprise; his nice wool hat was a further, unnecessary  element), but the shot came too much at a distance, no good. Finally he might have been in one of the Liquigas cars leaving  the Lido’s trattoria Favorita for  the special ferryboat (reserved to il Giro) to Punta Sabbioni on the way to Jesolo, but can’t tell (see: GIRO 23 & 24).

Extraña y titubeante por la expectación que generó, comienza en Venecia el 92º Giro d´Italia. Edición que representa, nada más y nada menos, que el centenario de la Corsa Rosa, que tuvo su nacimiento en 1909, año en el que resultara vencedor Luigi Ganna, que bajaría dos escalones en el podium final al año siguiente. Cien años de historia. Cien años de pasión por un deporte que en Italia es religión. Religión tifossi, encarnada en los triunfos de Alfredo Binda, Gino Bartali, Felice Gimondi o Il Campionissimo, Fausto Coppi, en tiempos pretéritos, y en la actualidad, con Gilberto Simoni o Marco Pantani. Una carrera con un denominador común, el triunfo transalpino, que no vio un ganador final extranjero hasta Hugo Koblet (Suiza) en 1950, y cuyas últimas 20 ediciones, han tenido tan sólo 6 vencedores no italianos, entre ellos, Miguel Indurain y Alberto Contador.

Luglio '98. E caddi nella pozione magica.

Tra poco più di due settimane, domenica 24 maggio per la precisione, sarò in un posto che non è un posto come un altro. 
Ho evitato finora di parlare, per risparmiarvi chili di melassa mielosa o etti di lacrimogena retorica, del padrone di casa delle salite. 
Ma un pellegrinaggio a Cesenatico, val bene una messa.
Era l’estate del 1998. 
Anche chi non aveva mai seguito quello strano sport che non era il calcio, palpitava. 
Ricordo solo l’acqua. Prima di tutto l’acqua. Che cadeva a catinelle. Il freddo, il fumo, i torrenti che colavano a picco dal Col du Galibier. Massiccio infangato, sgretolato dalla tempesta. 
Così nascono gli eroi: non dal fuoco faustiano.
Dall’acqua. 
L’acqua lava via, purifica, lascia l’essenziale. 
Il midollo, il cuore, l’anima. 
Io resto incollato all tv. Ci vedo Davide contro Golia. Ci vedo la metafora di una vita. Ci vedo le rivincite così come avrei sempre voluto che fossero. Una fidanzata che ti dà il due di picche, un amico che ti batte sulla linea d’arrivo, un brutto voto a scuola. Lui è lì a ribaltarle. E io lì ho bisogno di lui. In quel momento. 
Ci sono i miei 58 kg di scalatore inconsapevole, le mie insicurezze, la mia fragilità sulle sue spalle in quel momento. E lui mi porta su.
Capito? Lui mi porta su, in cima al Galibier. E non è mica poco.
Io sorrido come un bambino nella cesta di uno sherpa. Vado su. Mi pare uno spasso. Lui mi porta. E io vado su.
Non era solo bicicletta. Questa è l’unica cosa che so. Quel giorno di luglio, non era solo bicicletta.
C’era dell’altro. 
In quell’acqua che scorreva a valle, in quel fumo che esalava dal corpo. 
Non sapevo allora, che undici anni dopo sarei andato a trovarlo a casa sua. Da ciclista. 
Panta rei.

Summer at the Lodge

Marco-Pantani Cyclosportive 22-23 August Les Deux Alpes

For the second year, this August Les Deux Alpes will be hosting the annual Marco Pantani memorial Cyclosportive. This even that takes place over 2 days features a 9km time trial ’Contre la montre’ from the Freney d’Oisans into the resort of Deux Alpes on Saturday the 22nd and the main even of the 164km Cyclosportive on the Sunday. Both these events are open to the general public. Registration can be organized via the Deux Alpes site.

On a glorious early spring day i took to my road bike and cycled up Alpe d’Huez. For more information on the climb please visit my Cycling Alpe d’Huez for Plan-uk.org website.

I tried out a new route today for potential clients that consisted of the climb up Alpe d’Huez and then a descent to bend 16 and the small village of La Garde en Oisans (where a spring is located to fill up your bidons). I then traversed across and up again on one of the high single lane mountain roads (the D211) through le Vernis to Le Freney d’Oisans. This is part of the route that the Marco Pantani Cycling Sportive follows in August – and is a tough end after 130 or so kilometres in the saddle and before the final climb up to Les Deux Alpes.

Once I had descended the D211 into Freney – (note some nice switchbacks that would be great to climb the other way) – I followed the road back to Bourg d’Oisans. Again this road from Freney to to Bourg d’Oisans is used for the start of the Marco Pantani Cycling Sportive  and also the last part of La Marmotte.
