This year we got a new CS lecturer and he is fantastic. When he speaks you feel utterly compelled to listen, he is insightful, funny and more than knowledgeable.
Last week he did a lecture on the ‘Non-Place’ and melancholia towards technology and it got me thinking.

There used to be a Utopian idea of the future. This future would be one where we were at one with technology, we lived happily alongside many other species of humanoids, and doors make a ‘whoosh’ noise as they open.

Maybe we’d all know someone like Spock or Warf. Maybe you’d be the Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

But this Utopian image has been tainted because of an uncertainty about the future.
Global crisis, images of wars, destructive technology such as the A-Bomb, things that even if eradicated cannot be forgotten, create a hazy future. One where there are no whooshy doors!

We now suffer a disenchantment with technology because of the way it has deconstructed our idea of the future. We feel like we’ve lost something, but we’re not entirely sure what – we don’t know how to get over falling out of love with technology – thus we all suffer from techno-melancholia.

The point of this is one of the very poignant examples this lecturer gave of a lack of a Utopian future. He explained that many games are marketed on the uncertainty of the future.

In Gears of War the main character, Marcus Fenix, is part of a ruined wasteland and he’s trying to find a meaning to his life. But he is not trying to fight for a better future. He has no beliefs, he knows he has no future.

The images of the Dystopian landscape are played out alongside a very melancholic soundtrack, emphasising the complete lack of faith and hope.

I’m not really into video games, because I am generally rubbish at them, but I absolutely loved the theory behind this, and really wanted to share it with you all!

As a good friend of mine described it, “Unnecessarily violent, unbelievably fun!” I agree with him completely, Gears of War 2 is definitely a buy, if your mommy and daddy thinks it too violent, rent it for awhile! Do not even think about passing up this game, or I will come to your house and shove it in your Xbox 360! In the future aliens from underground come up and try to kill us all! Good thing Marcus Fenix and his ragtag crew are here to save the world!! WOHOO! Marcus the man that can not die! His buddy Dominic Santiago! Agustus Cole the PWNER!! Damon Baird the blonde! Anya Stroud the chick no one cares about! Dizzy the Redneck tank driver! Tai the dude that just won’t die! aannnd Anthony Carmine, the NOOB! So blah blah they kill stuff blow some stuff up and yeah ITS AWSOMEEE!!! Multiplayer is just as good and maybe even better, except it takes me like 10 minutes to get into a game. Annnddd yeah it’s awsome, buy it, now, or now, now would be good to, why are you reading this! Go get it!!!

I have far too much time on my hands.

I still remember the amazing commercial for Gears of War, which was a trailer-style ad that showcased the dark, powerful imagery of the game to the sound of Gary Jules’ haunting cover of ‘Mad World’. If you don’t remember it, take a look right here…

Since that aired, the game has spawned a sequel and is soon to become a trilogy as massively successful as the acclaimed Halo. And with it has come a ton of figures and collectibles that capture the feeling of the game, plus the amazing detail of the armor, weapons and characters themselves. Fans have been spoiled!

Prototipo del nuevo Lancer para Gears 3

Sin duda, la serie de Gears of War ha sido de lo mejor que hemos visto en la nueva generación de consolas.   A mi me han gustado mucho, tanto, que fue por ese juego que me hice de mi Xbox 360.  Su gameplay se me hizo bastante nuevo e innovador (Quantum ya te quiero LOL).

Pero bueno, todos aquellos que aún tienen sed de sangre Locust, y le siguen dando al online, y esperan que pronto salga el Cliffy B. con su Lancer como loco arriba de un escenario y les de la noticia del Gear of War 3……. tendrán que esperar hasta la próxima generación de consolas

Ya que ha sido el propio presidente de Epic Games, Michael Capps, quien se ha encargado de disipar las ilusiones con unas declaraciones realizadas en el marco del Tokyo Game Show. Al ser preguntado por ‘Gears of War 3’, el máximo representante de la compañía desarrolladora fue claro, e incluso un tanto irónico:

“Si hubiera un próximo ‘Gears of War’, será para la próxima generación de consolas, llegue cuando llegue. Si alguien lo sabe, ¡que me lo diga, por favor! Supongo que será dentro de cuatro o cinco años.”

Ok chicos! Guarden su Lancer, empaquen bronceador, ropa ligera y muchos esteroides (muy importante) porque nos vamos de vacaciones hasta que la nueva generación aparezca; por lo pronto, nos vamos al mundial. África, here we go!

En la opinión de Mamá Lucha:

Ese tal Michael Capps anda muy descarriado el muchachito.  Necesita que le aplique una “tapatía” o una “hurracarana” al mero estilo de Mamá Lucha para que deje de hablar tanta tonterías.

Cómo que esperarse para la nueva generación de consolas para sacar el Gears 3?  Está tonto o qué?   Creo que nadie le ha dicho que está generación actual va a durar bastante y se habla incluso de los 10 años.

Tal vez este tipo confunde el Project Fatal, digo Natal con una nueva generación de consolas, espero que sea así muchachito porque si no te hago una cavernaria, al igual que se la hago a los precios altos.

Está bien que dejen enfriar un poco la franquicia y no terminen dando un Gears of War 3: ODST; pero tampoco es para tanto.   Además, qué tal si el muchachito ese guerito con apellido de terrorista, Cliffy B. quiere comprarse un auto nuevo?  Otro Ferrari o un McLaren F1, qué sé yo.

Marcus Fenix

Today’s Desert Island Discs are chosen by star of Gears of War and Gears of War 2, Marcus Fenix. When he’s not fighting the Locust Horde with his partner Dom and the rest of Delta Squad, what does a gravel-voiced, hardened Space-Marine listen to? Check out his his Spotify playlist for a few surprises…

Eye of the tiger (Survivor). This was playing at the Boxercise class where I first met Dom – he still jokes it was a timetable clash with Chainsaw Maintenance 101. We got chatting and he persuaded me to enlist. The Major was such a dear, putting us to bunk together. I did send the Major a nice fruit bowl as a thank you, but Dom still thinks “he really owes him, and will return the favour when he’s least expecting it.” It’s that boundless gratitude which I so admire in Dom.

In the navy (The Village People). Dom insisted I included this – he constantly teases me about falling for his jape about Space Marines being the equivalent of solar sailors! I don’t regret signing up though. I knew my cupcake business was doomed the moment galactic war was declared. And the uniforms are so sharp, which never hurts!

I want to break free (Queen). I love to sing along while doing the house work, you know, like Freddie and his chums in that outrageous video? I just wish Dom would get the vacuum out a little more often. Honestly, our shag pile’s an utter disgrace. I nearly died the last time the Major came round for inspection, but I think we just about got away with it – it’s amazing how you can distract attention to certain focal points within a room with a few well placed doilies.

Killing in the name of (Rage Against The Machine). Life in the Marine Corps is not constant slaughter. There’s lots of sitting around waiting for assignment. It’s important to keep focused during these down-times. While it’s not really my cup of tea, Delta Squad are particularly fond of chanting along to “Killing in the name of”. Pre-mission, it’s also important to keep your energy up. A lot of the young bucks like to throw burgers down their sizable necks, but I daren’t with my metabolism! Instead I like to keep a variety of healthy snacks on hand. I find goji berries work well.

You raise me up (Kenny G). As part of my post-battlefield ritual, I do enjoy a long soak in the bath: That power armour can really chafe, and you’d never believe where gristle can work its way after a full day of chain-sawing brutish monsters through the face. A long soak, Kenny and a glass of Chablis really help me unwind. I wish Dom would follow my lead, he always seems so tense. I bought him some scented candles, but they’re just gathering dust with the massage oils I got for his birthday last year.

We like to party (The Vengaboys). Recently, Dom has been spending more and more time with the rest of Delta Squad. Rather than sit up and wait for him to roll in drunk yet again, I’ve starting enjoying the company of our pool boy, Jose. He introduced me to the Vengaboys, and wow, those guys really do like to party!

Gamestop had a sale this weekend: buy 2 used games, get a third free. This seemed like as good an opportunity as any to fatten up the old Xbox 360 collection, so, without further ado, here are my three selections:

• The first Gears of War, because I’m a game dev student, and it’s important for me to get better at hardcore shooters.  This is serious homework, people.
• Mass Effect, because the husband likes space aliens and long-winded RPGs.
• A game called Blue Dragon.  Because one of the games was free, we were able to choose something on a whim instead of poring over internet reviews, dismissing anything that flew under the radar or rubbed a few random critics the wrong way.  I remember buying NES and Sega Genesis games that way, just migrating toward an interesting title or box art, and taking a chance on one that appealed to me.  It’s a method of game shopping I haven’t used recently, and it was a fun revival.

As an aside, there was really no good reason to photograph the games chilling in my very happy moss rose plant, except that the midsummer morning was too nice not to spend outside.  Also, the fact that Marcus Fenix looks so cute and cuddly amongst the pretty flowers.

There are some awesome new figures coming from the filks at McFarlane, DC Direct and NECA. They’re not on the shelves yet, but you can already pre-order them and make sure you get your hands on the latest video game figures!

The Mongoose is the latest vehicle added to McFarlane’s Halo collection and it looks great. Shipping in October, it comes in three variations: orange, crimson and cyan. Each one is accompanied by a corresponding figure that makes getting your favourite even easier. They look great, the sculpting is stellar and Halo fans are sure to love it.

The new Illidan Stormrage is another go at the powerful World of Warcraft antagonist. A departure from the previous boxed figure, it features Illidan’s demon form and the same high levels of detail you’ve come to expect from DC, plus some awesome aesthetic alterations to the character in his new incarnation.

Usually known for their realistic, high-detail sculpting, NECA’s latest Gears of War figure is nevertheless a very cool piece. A heavily stylized take on Marcus Fenix, it’s definitely one for fans looking for that one special toy that’ll look perfect on a toyshelf.  This one ships in August.

GEARS OF WAR, the winner of 30+ Xbox 360 Game of the Year Awards!

GEARS OF WAR: What is it?

For those of you who already do not know about this game. GEARS OF WAR is an action pack thrilled game. You can play alone as Marcus Fenix or go co-op and have a friend play as Dominic Santiago.

You begin the game with these as your main weapons: Lancer Assault Rifle, Snub Pistol, and Grenade. However, as you progress through the game you can pick up other weapons along the way, but keep in mind you are only allowed to have 4 on hand. So be careful which weapon you drop/exchange.

I would never change my Lancer Assault Rifle. Come on, its fully automatic, holds tons of ammo, and above all its a Chainsaw Bayonet. You can cut enemies in half. THAT IS F*UCKIN GREAT. Blood splatter and all.

Basically you fight off the Locust Horde, who try to take over the planet and kill everything/everyone who lies in their path. Only a few survivors remain and can defend the planet. The rest are either sick, dying, imprisoned, or stranded.

Why I like this game:

• It’s Fun
• you have a chainsaw bayonet. Need I say more!!
• KILL KILL KILL!!!

What I hate about this game:

• that god damn A button to sprint/cover. Seriously can’t they separate the two. I hate the fact that when you sprint and you are near a wall you automatically cover. Not good when you are trying to run away from that Beserker.

Overall, a great game to play. For those who haven’t tried it yet. You are missing out. It has awesome graphics, co-op mode offline and online, vs mode, or try to fight off as many hordes as possible.

For all those gamer girls out there. I just found out there is a community on Xbox called “gamechiX”. It’s where all girls can meet, play, and have fun without guys being mean to them or just basically JERKS hassling them. So all ya gamer girls out there, we are here. Oh yeah, every Wednesday night is girl gamer night on Xbox Live. So, if you are out there and wanna hit me up, just send me your gamertag.

Bueno volvemos a presentar una nueva pregunta del Trivial de Marvel una vez que hemos decidido el premio que vamos a ofrecer. La pregunta tiene referencia a otra película del superhéroe con más gancho de Marvel, Spiderman.

Como ya sabéis Spiderman ya va por la cuarta entrega de películas (próximamente). Por tanto esta vez vamos a pregunta donde y que esta haciendo Stan Lee en la segunda película de Spiderman. Volvemos también a recordar que todos los que contestéis entráis en el sorteo del premio que ofrecemos, no solo el primero que lo acierte.

El premio de esta semana está dirigido a los amantes de los videojuegos clásicos y los videojuegos que marcan un antes y un después en el momento de su salida. Porque tenemos un póster a ambas caras, en una aparece una imagen de Link, el personage principal de Zelda. En la otra aparece Marcus Fenix, protagonista de Gears of War.

Some Thoughts Before The Review: The creative team behind Gears of War has a lot of work to do in issue six if they want me to keep the series on my pull list. To say that last month’s issue disappointed me would be a pretty serious understatement. In fact, I’m fairly certain it earned one of the lowest grades I have ever given out.

The Story: The final chapter of “Hollow” is about Marcus and the gang battling their way out of the Montevado sinkhole. Things do not go smoothly. Especially in Jace’s case…

What’s Good and What’s Not So Good: Liam Sharp and Jonny Rench do a great job of clearly capturing the action, chaos, grit, and violence necessary to make the Montevado sinkhole battle feel like something that carries dramatic weight. And they needed to, because Gears of War #6 is quite forgettable as far as storytelling is concerned. It’s not that the story is poorly executed or written, it’s just that, bottom line, there really isn’t a whole lot of story to tell. What little there is exists merely to stage action scenes and bring some sort of conclusion to the first arc of the series.

I’m at a bit of a loss as to what to say regarding Joshua Ortega’s writing. His plot vehicle, Jace, has a decent amount of depth and a flair for dramatic narration, but it’s that very depth that makes the character feel out of place. Too much time is spent on Jace when everyone knows that it’s really the Marcus Fenix show. While it’s admirable that Ortega opted to expand the cast of the series, it’s questionable whether it was ultimately the right decision when the action-packed comic series feels so shallow. It’s not that I expected something deep, but I did hope that it would expand and add to the videogame mythos a bit more successfully.

Conclusion: While Gears #6 isn’t quite strong enough to stop the series from dropping off my pull list due to the weak storytelling, it’s not really the creative team’s fault. The visuals do the source material justice, the writing is decent enough despite the limits placed on it (considering that the series takes place in between games one and two), and, as a whole, the book proves to be an entertaining piece of sci-fi action. I recommend it to fans of the game, but urge those checking it out to keep expectations realistic.

Grade: C+
