Monday the 23rd of November 2009 was a rather grim and rainy day, perfect for a black metal show. Luckily Swedish black metal band Marduk was playing at the Talking Head Club inside Sonar in Baltimore that night, the closest stop to Washington DC on their US Plague Tour. I had a couple friends flake out on me, but since Marduk failed to get into the US for Maryland Deathfest back in May, and I missed their Baltimore stop on their 3 show mini tour back in August, I was determined not to miss them for a third time this year. So I drove up to Baltimore in that dreary cold rain by myself blasting metal all the way. When I got there Nachtmystium was setting up. They’re ok, sort of a thrashy black metal band. Not my favorite but worth checking out while drinking a beer or two. The final song of their set was a cover of GG Allin’s song I Kill Everything I Fuck, which I gotta say was pretty fucking cool. Wasn’t expecting that one, wish I’d had my camera ready, I’d like to have that one on video. They’re scheduled to play with Kreator and Voivod at Jaxx in early March, so maybe I’ll get my chance then.

When Nachtmystium’s set ended I moved up to the front of the stage as everyone was clearing out to go smoke, order more beer, piss, etc… Got right up there and was chatting a bit to the people around me during the final sound check. Glad I did cause 2 of the guys next to me were throwing mad elbows all during Marduk’s set and fucking people up from the pit, but I got in good with em before that so I didn’t have any probs. Kinda dick of them, but it did keep people from the pit from fucking up my camera. Plus that latino guy wearing eyeliner and a shirt with the sleeves cut off looked like he could use a few bruises. Marduk’s set was pretty good, they played a good assortment of songs from a variety of albums which was cool. I’m not a huge fan of when bands play most of their new album and a few classics live, I much prefer the career spanning classics with a couple songs from the new album thrown in approach. This show was a pretty good example of that. During their long set they played songs off just about every album except for, oh yeah, my fucking favorite Marduk album Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered. Seriously, the whole time I was driving up there I was thinkin to myself how it’ll be worth all the stress of dark, rainy interstate traffic just to hear Infernal Eternal or maybe even Glorification Of The Black God live (basically a cover of Modest Mussorgsky’s classical piece A Night On Bald Mountain as arranged by Leopold Stokowski for the Disney movie Fantasia). Well, that didn’t happen. They did play some classics like Wolves, Funeral Bitch, and Baptism By Fire, but still, Infernal Eternal fucking rules. What the hell? If you like black metal and you haven’t heard those 2 songs do yourself a favor and listen to them right now by clicking their names up there. Fucking brutal! Anyways, the show was still fun and if not for the events on my drive home I’d probably say it was totally worth the trip to Baltimore on a Monday night (even tho the show ended after midnight on a weekday and I had to drive home afterwards). About 5 minutes outside of Baltimore on 95 my car decided it was going to stop running. Seriously, of all the times? I’ve had very few problems with this car in the 3 years I’ve owned it, but dying in Maryland was not awesome. A $200 tow truck ride got me back home at about 5am, plenty of time to be fucking exhausted for work the next day. Still, the set was good, the show was fun and I think I got some good pics too. I thought it was odd the drummer, Lars Broddesson, didn’t use 2 kick drums but instead had 2 petals set up on a single bass drum. That’s pretty uncommon for metal bands. By the end of their set, which was about an hour and a half, their corpse paint was smeared and the audience was running out of energy. They did the typical walk off stage encore thing but came back really quick, like 1 minute later, to play the final song of the night, Panzer Division Marduk. You can watch that video below. Overall I’d recommend any fan of old school black metal to go see Marduk, it’s a brutal show definitely worth the money.

След като прочетох възторжено ревю в Про-рок (към което за жалост не мога да link-на, но е в абсолютно същия дух като ето това тук), реших да преслушам последния албум на Marduk Wormwood, за да видя какво толкова изтървам.

Преди това не бях чувал нищо от тази група, но все пак името й ми беше познато, нали съм си дърт металист. Рекох си, че щом това им е вече 11 албум и продължават да получават възторжени отзиви, значи сигурно са добри.

Е, останах разочарован.

Нека да ти кажа като какво звучи Wormwood на Marduk: престави си, че някой коли прасе с тъп нож, а отстрани някой е хванал една китара и стърже по нея, явно с цел да заглуши квиченето.  Вторият е подкрепен от трети, който изглежда със същата цел безмилостно налага барабани. Понеже групата е четиричленна, сигурно в кочината се навърта и басист, но аз поне не мога да различа неговите опити на фона на общата какофония.

Това между другото обяснява и защо по снимките т. нар. вокалист на групата Morgan Hakansson е все опръскан с кръв — явно свинска.

Четох и интервю с Marduk и останах с впечатлението, че те много насериозно приемат тая работа с величаенето на сатаната и т.н. Донякъде е забавно колко тънка е границата между това да изглеждаш зъл и плашещ и това да изглеждаш смешен. Marduk си я прекрачват без никакви затруднения.

Пак след прочит на ревюта чух и последните албуми на Hypocrisy и Meshuggah, озаглавени съответно A Taste of Extreme Divinity и obZen. Тях мога да ти ги препоръчам с чисто сърце, особено първия.

The amount of corpsepaint on a band’s face is proportional to how hard I laugh at them. Well, unless there’s no corpsepaint, but I still might laugh, but for different reasons, so…ah fuck it. Black metal is ridiculous.

But I went to go see Nachtmystium and Marduk anyways, upstairs at the Worcester Palladium last Friday. The only corpsepaint on Nachtmystium was some eye-black under Blake Judd’s eyes, so according to my rule, Nachtmystium were awesome. Marduk plastered some grim-ass frowns on their mugs. I giggled and left early to go get drunk in Boston.

I don't doubt that Judd's eyes (right) are often that puffy, but he does add a little makeup to accentuate the effect. Is it grim? I think that's open for debate.

My crew missed the openers because my buddy got stuck in traffic on the way up from Philly that day. I think they were called Merrimack, but the French one, not the one Lambgoat always posts about. I don’t know if I would’ve liked their music, but their singer liked my Philadelphian friend, a short dreadlocked black dude who wore a ‘Milf Hunter’ shirt to the show. The singer asked for a picture with him. “Voila! I’ve found eeem, ze Milf Unteah!” Welcome to America buddy.

We caught Black Anvil’s, last few songs, which made me sleepy. Then Mantic (Manic?) Ritual had a few half-time thrash breakdowns that sounded good to me, but I mostly wondered why a second-tier thrash revival band ended up on a black metal tour.

Nachtmystium was the real reason we came. It took a few years for me to warm up to them, probably because I couldn’t hear what the fuck was going on with Instinct: Decay. Assassins was awesome though, and it served me black metal just the way I like it: mixed in with better stuff. They played mostly from Assassins and the Doomsday Derelicts EP, with a few older tunes and a GG Allin cover (“I Kill Everything I Fuck”). They sounded good, and I’m glad I saw them.

Marduk…never liked them, probably never will. Straight-up black metal does nothing for me. After two songs, the singer asked “Are you with us or what?!?” ::grim frown::

Nope. I do respect their face-making abilities though. My cheeks cramped when I tried to frown as hard as he does.

Lorsque j’ai démarré ce blog, j’ai voulu y mettre une grande variété de textes et de vidéos, véhiculant les idées des différents courants faisant partie du paysage ufologique. Je me suis vite aperçue que les textes concernant Nibiru, la fin du monde, 2012 et les mayas cartonnaient, et ils sont encore à ce jour parmi les plus lus.  Mon but n’était pas de faire grandir la peur, surtout lorsqu’elle n’est pas justifiée. C’est pourquoi je tiens à recadrer les choses. J’ai trouvé ce texte,  qui correspond tout à fait à ma vision des choses. La sortie du film 2012 est une aubaine pour les gourous en tout genre manipulant les foules par la peur.

D’un coté, nous avons des gens qui pensent que Jésus va revenir, de l’autre, des gens qui pensent que des sauveurs intergalactiques vont faire leur apparitions sous peu et nous délivrer de l’ordre mondial en marche, encore d’autres qui pensent que 2012 sera la fin pour tous et au milieu, des gens qui se demandent ce qu’il va se passer réellement. Mise à part une guerre bactériologique ou nucléaire car l’être humain est stupide à ce point, il ne se passera rien, à la limite, des intempéries mais pas de cataclysme planétaire qui nous anéantirait. On peut voir ce que fait la psychose de la grippe alors imaginez une fin du monde avec une date butoir, je plains sincèrement les anxieux de nature en espérant qu’ils ne nous pondent pas une panique générale qui ferait certainement plus de dégâts que la catastrophe annoncée.

L’être humain a essuyé moultes prophéties depuis la nuit des temps et il continue à écouter ses histoires mystiques car l’être humain a besoin de ce coté sensationnel pour donner un sens à sa vie. Combien attendent l’arrivée de Jésus Christ, annoncée par une prophétie, dans ses années de troubles ?
L’homme aimerait que ses problèmes se résolvent avec un mélange de visiteur intergalactique et de prophétie mais quel est le but d’aller chercher des réponses ailleurs que sur notre bonne vieille planète ?  Pour accéder à des informations supérieures, il faut débroussailler les carcans qui nous empêchent de voir la réalité et que notre esprit soit suffisamment libre et ouvert sur des plans supérieurs ? Le meilleur moyen pour y palier est de se remettre en question sans se mentir et de sortir de cette matrice qui nous protège dans un sens et qui nous manipule de l’autre. Nous avons dans notre mémoire cellulaire, toutes les réponses aux questions que nous nous posons et pour y accéder, il faut accepter qu’en travaillant sur soi, nous travaillons pour le bien de tous. Je ne parle pas d’une fraternité qui fait la joie des sectes mais d’une alliance énergétique qui nous lie les uns et les autres, que l’on veuille ou non. L’être humain est une caisse de résonnance qui vibre sur la terre, dans l’univers et tant qu’il sera sur différents niveaux de fréquence dû à des désaccords, à sa haine et à sa vanité, nous ne pourrons pas accéder universellement aux dimensions qui ont fait couler beaucoup d’encre depuis quelques décennies mais qui apporteraient une avancée significative pour tous.

Nous avons des écrits de l’ancien temps qui parle de prophéties, de catastrophes, de résurrections, de délivrances et j’en passe mais nous trouvons dans une prophétie toute la connerie de cette société qui cherche des solutions dans des croyances populistes qui font vendre du papier. Il y a une différence entre les prédictions et les prophéties qui viennent de prédictions déformées par la main de l’homme. La prophétie donne espoir pour certains, fait rêver d’autres quand elle ne sert pas de base pour des groupements sectaires mais c’est une manière d’échapper à son destin car quelqu’un qui croit en une idéologie quelconque ne croit pas en lui et  c’est bien le problème de cette société d’aujourd’hui. J’ai lu récemment un article sur le 21 décembre 2012 et j’avoue que ça me fait peur car je ne pensais pas que les gens pouvaient être aussi crédules que ça. Un vieux calendrier mystique, des explications idéalistes et nous voila dans un phénomène de psychose crée par celui qui cherche la gloire dans la destruction. Le problème est, qu’avec des informations cohérentes, il ramènera à sa cause, toutes sortes d’âmes perdues qui formeront un égrégore d’énergie négative pour ce jour fatidique. Il y aura forcément une influence sur le cours des choses car les formes pensées suivront leur chemin et l’inconscient collectif sera encore tiré par le bas. Hé oui, l’inconscient collectif dépend de notre état énergétique et d’après vous, pourquoi le monde est ce qu’il est aujourd’hui ?  On ne peut pas être lucide lorsque l’on vit dans un climat de torpeur et c’est certainement le but recherché car c’est une manière indirecte de contrôle.

Ils nous arrivent de penser à un moment ou un autre, quelle est l’utilité de venir ici bas ? On se cherche des réponses dans l’irrationnel quand le rationnel ne suffit plus. Nous avons des aprioris concernant l’après vie mais c’est un sujet tabou qui fait peur. Dans les esprits, la mort est ce qui peut arriver de pire pour un être humain et il n’y a rien d’autre après alors que c’est l’aboutissement d’un parcours. Elle n’est qu’une étape de transition qui sépare l’esprit du corps pour des fréquences supérieures. Les idées reçues avec l’enfer et le paradis depuis des lustres ne sont que le résultat de dogmes religieux pour contrôler les masses mais en réalité, nous œuvrons tous pour la même cause, seulement à des fréquences différentes. Le corps physique n’est qu’une enveloppe charnelle qui sert d’abord à nourrir l’esprit et ensuite à traduire un comportement qui aura un rôle dans cette société. Notre identité génétique est composée de notre parcours, de notre évolution et de nos erreurs. Si nous sommes ici, c’est pour parfaire notre code génétique au fur et à mesure des générations qui se présentent ici bas.  Il n’y a rien de religieux là dedans mais si on suit l’histoire, l’être humain a inconsciemment cherché à communiquer sur des plans supérieurs grâce à des prières, des rituels comme le font des populations indigènes depuis la nuit des temps.

The mythologem deals with male gods from the first or second generation. In order to rise to their seats as heads of the pantheon, they have to struggle with a cosmic monster, usually a serpent or a dragon, or against the elder gods; a fight which usually ends in killing.
The different myths of the struggle tell of the transition between the first generation and the second generation of gods (or third generation, in certain cases). The myth gives validity to an authority of a god or a new dynasty. There is a cycle which speaks of the existing order and the danger which lies in returning to the state of chaos with the loss of the god, usually a storm god. The figures in the struggle may seem as representations of natural phenomena. The storm god is the fertility and the fertility season, and the monsters are extinction and death, or the dry season. The triumph of good and order over evil includes the understanding of a constant and unending struggle. In the cyclicality there is a need for a sacrifice, and this sacrifice is usually a man or as a substitute an animal.
There is also a possibility that the god who rose to power becomes a Deus Otiosus: a god that retires from managing the world, and in his place arrives an active god.
More gods, or even a mortal, may appear to assist the god in his struggle against the monster.

Enuma Elish, the Mesopotamian-Babylonian struggle myth

Enuma Elish relies first and foremost on a cycle of stories in Sumerian which deals with the god Ninurta who overcame the rocks. Ninurta is the rain and the rocks are eroded by the rain. The primary young god is fighting with an external element. Here lies the seed to the story of the Enuma Elish in which Marduk is fighting a demonic force.
Ninurta fights Anzu, a monster who stole the tablets of destiny from Enlil, and which Ninurta needs to return. The one who holds the tablets of destiny is the one who holds the world. Ninurta returns them and is declared the ruler of the world.
These motives are found in the Enuma Elish, where Tiamat is defeated by Marduk.
After the creation of the first gods, the young gods banded together and created ‘noise’ (rigmu). It’s not just any noise, but a type of speech which the gods use to talk among themselves. They create a state which is in opposition to the earlier state of the anti-world. The speech is a dynamic element and it begins to cause things to happen. Tiamat is disturbed by this noise. And does not appreciate the behavior of the young gods. Abzu wishes to calm Tiamat and decides to destroy the younger gods, but Ea, the son of Anu, kills Abzu, and inside Abzu he places his temple. In the waters he places a temple and calls it Absu – Life is the source.
Ea marries inside the Abzu with his mate Damkina, and they give birth to Marduk in there. There is no end to Marduk’s qualities, as the Enuma Elish tells us.
Marduk plays as a baby. He is still an infant, but the titanic gods are angered. He plays with four winds and creates noise. The titanic gods ask Tiamat to avenge her husband and to stop the noise. She marries a new husband and gives him the tablets of destiny and goes into battle. She stands at a head of an army of monsters which she creates.
None of the gods are willing to go against her except Marduk. He is prepared to go into battle against Tiamat under the condition that he would be chosen to be king over the gods and the king of the world (which did not exist at this point). In the gods’ council they choose him and rejoice that he is going into battle against Tiamat. They keep his condition and say, “Marduk is the king”. The gods create toxic and evil winds which Tiamat swallows, causing her to swell. Marduk then fires an arrow, entering her opened mouth and puncturing her innards. Then Marduk steps on Tiamat.
After Tiamat’s death he kills Qingu her new husband and the monsters.
Tiamat, the mother of all living things, has been killed. This creates a paradox. And this is the second part of the story. Outside the chaos, it’s not that order returns, but that the world is created – Tiamat’s defeat means the creation of the world. Tiamat becomes almost literally the mother of all living as she is the matter from which the world was created by Marduk. In the entire epos there is only one metaphor and it is what Marduk is doing with the body; he slices her in half as an oyster. From the body of Tiamat, Marduk creates the sky.
Marduk, above the Abzu, erects a rite to Ea, Anu and Enlil and distributes a territory to each of them, the first to Ea, the second to Anu and the third to Enlil. He divides the sky and in fact creates a calendar. He approaches to create time, and places the heavenly bodies to determine time.
From the eyes of Tiamat, Marduk pours out the rivers Euphrates and Tigris. From her breasts he creates the mountains, from her tail he creates the Dur-An-Ki – the axis of heaven and earth. In the Abzu he builds the center and constructs steps into the sky. Marduk takes the tablets of destiny and the gods recognize him as the head of the pantheon.
Abzu is identified with Babylon, where Dur-An-Ki is found, the center of the world. The meaning of the word Babylon (bab-ili) means “the gate of the gods”. Babylon is the Axis mundi.
The story ends with Marduk as the king of the world.
The Enuma Elish presents a thought which tries to deal with reality and present a simple explanation. It is not a philosophical composition, but there is an epos that comes close to presenting a world view.
The Enuma Elish ends with a hymn to Marduk who defeated Tiamat and became king of the universe. Some say that there are historical reasons behind the story which was written around the first millennium BCE. The statue of Marduk was stolen from Babylon by the Elamites, but was returned by Nebuchadnezzar. The epos was symbolic to the return of Marduk from exile and his rise into the head of the pantheon. The Elamites represent Tiamat, and the Babylonians represent Marduk. The event is explained through mythological and allegorical means. For the Babylonians this epos was their history; the explanation for their existence. Furthermore, it gave Babylon the justification to be the central city of the world.

Para muchos no necesitan presentación, yo, por si acaso, los introduciré de forma ligera.
Marduk es un grupo sueco de Black Metal nacido a principios de los 90′ que sin duda cualquier buen aficionado al genero los conocerá.  Tiene un total de 11 discos de estudio lo cual les avala una gran trayectoria, desde sus primeros discos con el sonido crudo típico de las producciones del genero por aquella época hasta el sonido más bien producido mucho más claro y con más presencia de los últimos tiempos de la banda.

Hoy os presento el nuevo y undécimo producto de los suecos al que han titulado Wormwood. Ha mi parecer para comprender el sonido de este disco has de estar familiarizado con la evolución que ha ido tomando el grupo. Si bien se habían presentado como un grupo rápido, típico y tópico de black metal, en el anterior disco de estudio Rom 5:12 rompieron y nos presentaron un disco mucho más conceptual.  En este nuevo trabajo han ido aún más lejos han mezclado un poco de todo,  además de un claro añadido de otros registros vocales y algo de ambient como en el tema Unclosing the curse. Sin perder la ferocidad de trabajos anteriores, sin decepcionar a la parte más black primitiva se pueden escuchar más melodías de lo que nos tienen acostumbrados.  En definitiva, un buen disco, fresco y variado, lo cual se agradece en un mundo bastante estancado.
