She replies by saying, “To be perfectly honest, I’ve had enough of being an enigma. I want to be known.” Well Pippa, don’t get ahead of yourself because it’s the enigmatic elements that make The Private Lives of Pippa Lee curiously ingenious. Based on the title and the film’s poster, I’d like to bet you’ve already formulated a slew of preconceived notions. Good for you, because that’ll make the revelation of the film’s richly layered plot far more effective.

From all outward appearances, Pippa Lee (ROBIN WRIGHT PENN) leads a charmed existence. She is the devoted wife of an accomplished publisher (ALAN ARKIN) thirty years her senior, the proud mother of two grown children, and a trusted friend and confidant to all who cross her path. But as Pippa dutifully follows her husband to a new life in a staidConnecticut retirement community, her idyllic world and the persona she has built over the course of her marriage will be put to the ultimate test.

In truth, looks are deceiving, and this picture-perfect woman has seen more than her fair share of turmoil in her youth. Embarking on a bittersweet journey of self-discovery, accompanied by a new, strange and soulful acquaintance (KEANU REEVES), Pippa must now confront both her volatile past and the hidden resentment of her seemingly perfect life in order to find her true sense of self.

By turns wry, humorous, and moving, THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE presents the complex portrait of the many lives behind a single name.

Golden Globe nominee Robin Wright Penn and Academy Award® winner, Alan Arkin head an all-star cast that includes Blake Lively as the young Pippa Lee, Maria Bello as her mother, Suky Sarkissian, Keanu Reeves as Pippa’s inscrutable neighbor, Chris Nadeau, Monica Bellucci as the socialite Gigi Lee, triple Academy Award® nominee Julianne Moore as the freewheeling Kat, Academy Award® nominee and Golden Globe winner Winona Ryder as Pippa’s trusted friend, Sandra Dulles, Mike Binder as novelist Sam Shapiro and rising stars Zoe Kazan and Ryan as Grace and Ben Lee, Pippa’s young adult children.

THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE is adapted from writer-director Rebecca Miller’s novel of the same name. It is produced by Lemore Syvan from Elevation Filmworks, and Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B Entertainment. Executive producers are Winchester Capital, Jean-Luc De Fanti, and The Salt Company partners, Cyril Mégret, Robert Bevan and Samantha Horley

Columbia Pictures has launched the official website and trailer for new movie Grown Ups from You Don

Columbia Pictures has launched the official website and trailer for new movie Grown Ups from You Don’t Mess with the Zohan director Dennis Dugan.

The new comedy stars Adam Sandler and tell the story of five friends and former team-mates who reunite years later to honour the passing of their childhood basketball coach. With their wives and kids in tow, they spend the Fourth of July holiday weekend together at the lake house where they celebrated their championship years earlier. They all very quickly find themselves reverting to childhood ways.

The movie marks Dugan’s fourth time as director of an Adam Sandler vehicle, after The Benchwarmers, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and Zohan, but he has appeared onscreen in many other Sandler flicks dating back to Happy Gilmore. Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade are all onboard, in addition to Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, and Maya Rudolph. So there’s plenty of comedy talent available, even if some of that resides deep within Spade.

I’m holding out hope, against all evidence to the contrary that Sandler can rediscover his Happy Gilmore/Big Daddy form. Whether good or bad, expect to see the movie around July 2010.

You can check out the trailer here.

I haven’t seen “Twilight”, but based on her performance in “Adventureland”, I see potential in Kristen Stewart. Along with William Hurt, Maria Bello and Eddie Redmayne, she stars in Udayan Prasad’s “The Yellow Handkerchief”, a film about three strangers who embark on a road trip through Louisiana.

Hurt looks to be playing a man who is trying to reconnect with his estranged wife. There is a deep world-weariness to his eyes in what looks to be a solid performance and perhaps eerily resonant given the controversy that arose earlier this year around the release of his ex-wife Marlee Matlin’s autobiography. The line about “living like a ghost” indicates some solid writing. Redmayne played Matt Damon’s son in Robert De Niro’s “The Good Shephard”. Bello is reuniting with Hurt from “A History of Violence” and looks as though she could power a small town with her smile.

The idea of people meeting up without prior knowledge of each other’s hangups to take a journey offers a lot of possibilities for character development. I’m unfamiliar with Prasad and the writing team, whose credits seem to amount to a patchwork of TV and indie film, though it looks intriguing with a pretty solid ensemble and an interesting dynamic between established and brand new romances.

Toata lumea o place dar nimeni n-o intelege.

Nota:9/10

If there’s a Scot that threatens to be as famous as Sean Connery, it is Gerard Butler. He has

If there’s a Scot that threatens to be as famous as Sean Connery, it is Gerard Butler. He has been around since 1997 but his current incredibly famous status came with 300. Oh, but I managed to ignore that. You see, I am fan of epic movies in the classical sense; you know-the ones that are shot in actual location and not in front of a blue screen. Movies like Braveheart and Troy. So I blissfully ignored the yellowish colored tale of the 300 Spartans. But when “P.S.: I love you” came out, I was sold. Yes, I prefer a decent romantic movie over movies with CGI. But this movie was more than decent:

P.S. I LOVE YOU (2007) :

It was based on the book of the same name by Cecilia Ahern. And though I have read the book, I loved the movie so much more. In fact, I thought that Gerard Butler brought so much spirit to the character. He brought substance that I found somewhat missing from the book. He plays Gerry. An adorable, romantic and a full of life Irish guy who meets the love of his life- the free-spirited and colorful American Holly during her trip there. Well, actually the story is much more complicated than that. Before the credits we find out that Holly and Gerry have been married for 9 years, they are not exactly into money and have some typical marital problems. But unlike other couples, even the worst of fighting ends in making out and us realizing how mad they are still about each other. And after the credits, we learn that Gerry has died of a brain tumor, and Holly has to cope with his death. But Gerry, the lovely guy that he is, has made a plan- so that he can help Holly coping with his death. He has written her letters- each to arrive at a specif time, each including instructions and ending with the note “P.S I love you”. As Holly reads the letters and is forced to get out there and do what Gerry’s letters say, we see -not chronological- flashbacks of their relationship: how they met, fell in love, and how great they were together.

All though there are some elements of the movie that I didn’t like- (such as Holly’s interaction with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character. I absolutely love Dean Morgan but some of his scenes with Holly just didn’t feel right), it is still beautiful and very heart-warming. So Butler prove what a sweetheart he could be- and a hearth-throbbing one at that.

BUTTERFLY ON A WHEEL (2007) :

Then came Butterfly on a Wheel. A low-budget, solid thriller with Pierce Brosnan and Maria Bello.

Butler plays Neil Randall, a brilliant advertising executive whose life is just perfect: the perfect marriage with a beautiful woman (Maria Bello), a lovely daughter and an amazing career. But one day as he is in the car with his wife, the car is hijacked by Pierce Brosnan’s character Tom Ryan: They are to do exactly what Tom asks them to do, or Tom’s partner-who has their daughter-is going to kill her. His demands are complicated and hard to accomplish. They don’t know about his motives either. All they know is that Tom is dangerous and they have to find a way to survive this. Of course the premise looks simple. But the plot twists and events make sure this is not a typical story. In fact, it is the kind of a thriller that I hope I can manage to write someday. The acting performances are just as solid as the screenplay. So this time Gerard’S character is not as simple and likable as the one in P.S.: I love you. In fact, as the movie progresses, your feelings and thoughts constantly change as you try to figure out this multi-layered character.

Nim’s island was a nice little family picture with Jodie Foster and Rocknrolla certainly satisfied director Guy Ritchie ’s fans. I guess I am not such a big fan of his typical story telling with some dark humor thrown in for good measure. I can’t just be pulled into his movies. So even with Butler’s presence, Rocknrolla was not my cup of tea. But then , The The Ugly Truth came out.

I already did a post on this extremely entertaining movie so I am not going to go into detail. But let me just say that, Butler can pull of comedy. He can play a seemingly shallow and one dimensional character who slowly shows his true colors. He is charming, funny, obnoxious and attractive all the same time. He also shows he can dance and boy, I have to admit I wish I were Katherine Heigl even just for the sake of that dance floor scene.

So of course after this movie I looked for Gerry’s previous work. And the ones that I found were good and highly impressive. The change in his looks and diversity of his roles were also something to talk about. He plays the Phantom in The Phantom of the opera- the musical was much more rock-n-roll than I expected and Gerry can sing. Yeah, I had noticed that when he was playing the guitar and singing in P.S:I love you. He has that sexy rock voice and his just might be my favorite version of the classic Mustang Sally. Dear Frankie is a lovely story where he pretends to be the father of a deaf kid. The man is hired by the kid’s mom so his dreamworld wouldn’t be shattered. He is the Dracula in Dracula 2000. With his long, jet black long hair, clean shaven pace and younger looks, he is barely recognizable. Then there is the tale of Beowulf and Grendel- where he plays the mythical hero Beowulf. There are many more movies that I culdn’t find yet. But he has new projects are on the way and I’m set to see Gamer this week.

It is always a breath of fresh air when you encounter an actor who is good at any role, look and accent. Butler is multi-talent, extremely masculine and I have no objections to the fact that he is just so handsome. Well, I am just glad Scotland gave us another great actor.

There has been a lot of talk and commentary about “A History of Violence” from director David Cronen

There has been a lot of talk and commentary about “A History of Violence” from director David Cronenberg. The remarks focus primarily on how powerful and thrilling the film is on the angle it takes on an all-to familiar story. I disagree and this is why.

The film tells the story of your typical “heartland” family who own the town diner and are friends with just about everybody in town. Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is the patriarch of that family with his wife, Edie (Maria Bello) and their two children.

All is just perfect until one fateful night, two gunmen stumble into the Stall’s diner just when Tom and his staff are about to close for the night. In the blink of an eye, Tom saves the day and is crowned the town’s local hero that in turn brings the media to cover the story. But the media isn’t the only thing interested in Tom Stall.

It so happens that this quiet family man has a deep dark secret that has garnered the attention of two gangsters (Ed Harris and William Hurt). Could it be true?

“A History of Violence” is one of those redemption stories where all is perfect until a deep dark secret emerges to threaten the peace. We have seen it all before and quite often it is a western. And basically that’s what David Cronenberg’s new film is primarily. It is a modern-day set western.

The problem I had with “A History of Violence” was that Cronenberg went through the whole film with one mood, rhythm, tone and theme. He didn’t stray from the path or ever ante up the action or tension in any of the scenes. The only real tension in this film is the firing of a gun but the tone is so down that gun-fights seem like they are stuck in slow-motion.

From what I had gathered from trailers and such, “A History of Violence” was being marketed as a razor-sharp psychological thriller where the theme of violence raises havoc with a small town family. It just isn’t so.

I have to hand it to Viggo Mortensen, he has no problems about doing different kinds of films. But I really think that there needed to be a more complex actor in the title role of this to give the audience more of a look inside who this man is. See the conflict in his face and show us the internal debates going on inside the man. I just didn’t feel any raw emotion from Viggo.

I really did like Maria Bello in this film because it seems to be her most honest and deepest portrayal to date. If it wasn’t for her dynamic performance I think it would have been hard to follow this film. She is the polar opposite to Viggo and it makes for an interesting conflict in a lot of the more everyday situations.

I also really didn’t get what Cronenberg was trying to accomplish with his rather awkward love scenes. I guess he was trying to touch on desperation verses love and devotion but I never felt it was poignant enough to make an impact.

I wanted so much more from “A History of Violence” and I am probably in the minority but I was disappointed. The film isn’t thrilling because the tone is done on such a low note I guess it is powerful in some scenes but not enough to carry the film. But as a whole I just don’t get it.

3.5 out of 5

So Says the Soothsayer.

Betyg: 3

Look what you’ve started! Not only has your response to our little “TMZ antidote” been overwhelming (and heartwarming), but suddenly do-gooding celebs are coming out of the woodwork!

Thursday, the Clinton Global Initiative honored Brad Pitt for helping to rebuild hurricane-ravaged New Orleans. So far, Pitt’s “Make It Right” project has completed 13 eco-friendly single-family houses in the city’s Ninth Ward, all with such features as “green roofs” which dramatically reduce heating and cooling costs. Pitt says the project’s goal is to build 150 such houses.

Meanwhile, the Hollywood trade paper Variety hosted a “Power of Women” luncheon in Beverly Hills, and I don’t know whether it was a coincidence, or they were just sucking up to you Find The Good readers, but it seemed everyone wanted to discuss their charitable work:

Christina Aguilera was honored for her role in the World Hunger Relief program.

Jamie Lee Curtis talked about her involvement with Starlight Starbright, which she says helped her young son when he landed in the hospital with a ruptured spleen a few years back.

“Mad Men” star and shark lover January Jones told us about her work to save the world’s oceans with Oceana.

One of my favorite actresses, Maria Bello, discussed being an active member of the Save Darfur Coalition.

And perhaps most apropos to this blog, Anne Hathaway is one of many celebs working with Service Nation, which is trying to “inspire a new era of voluntary citizen service.”

Because reading about all of these worthy causes is great, but at some point, you do want to get involved, right?
