The violinists, trumpeters, the singer the guitarist everyone! So proud to be Mexican =D
So sad that Mariachi music is so underrated, it has the power to rival more well known & hyped music such as opera & classical.

Sono sempre stato abbastanza negato per i videogames. Intendo quelli sparatutto, ruba una macchina e fatti inseguire dalla polizia, impara a guidare un boeing 747, costruisci una metropoli su una palude o sconfiggi la cavalleria napoleonica con l’esercito cartaginese.
Però ieri mi è tornato in mente un motivetto di un videogioco e non riuscivo a smettere di canticchiarlo.
Si trattava del tema di Alex Kidd (in Miracle World), glorioso gioco preinstallato nel altrettanto glorioso Sega Master System. Unica console per videogames che sia mai entrata in casa mia…

- tutti i livelli (inizio, primo, acqua e fine )

Per chi non ha voglia di riesumare il Sega e litigare con i cavi dell’antenna e della televisione per collegarlo, esiste la versione online qui.
E sullo stesso sito ci sono anche tantissimi altri giochi per cui ero negato.

Girellando per l’IMDb, ho scoperto in post-produzione un film che non avrei mai pensato che potesse venir realizzato: sto parlando di Machete!

Forse qualcuno ha un’idea di ciò di cui sto parlando, altri forse lo intuiranno se dico Grindhouse – Planet Terror: per tutti può essere utile http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0985694/.

Il regista è Robert Rodriguez, del quale se non lo conoscete vi consiglio di guardare El Mariachi (il primo, senza Banderas) e Four Rooms (l’episodio con Banderas): dopo averli visti l’ho considerato un genio. Poi  ho visto Dal tramonto all’alba e qualche pezzo dei “mariachi” successivi… il giudizio si è ridimensionato fino ad arrivare a quello di “lato scanzonato (o scazzone) del pulp”, anche per la sua amicizia con Quentin Tarantino, che è sicuramente più cerebrale.

Non so se essere contento o meno che la genialata di un finto trailer in mezzo a Planet Terror diventi un film vero e proprio: mi sembra che si rovini l’ironia dell’idea originale. Però quel finto trailer prometteva “bene”. E altrettanto bene promette il cast annunciato da IMDb. Penso che aspetterò tranquillamente di vederlo, a casa, non credo al cinema.

PS: leggendo i trivia, scopro che lo script risale al 1993: potrebbe essere un buon segno.

PPS: cliccando sul personaggio di Machete, mi accorgo che è presente anche nei tre Spy Kids, sempre interpretato da Danny Trejo… potrebbe essere un brutto segno.

My husband  and I are not the average Apartment On-Site Management Team. We’re in our late 20s, had well paying careers previously and lived in a “luxury” condo right outside of Orange County Ca.

He had journeyed out of the local Union and was at his top wage and I was a project manager in a construction related industry, before that I spent 4 years working in various coffee shops.

We got into this for a few reasons:

1. Recession killed construction!

2. As much as we drive each other crazy, after both being unemployed at the same time we realized that we really didn’t want to be apart for 40-60 hours a week. I mean, what else can I say but that we kinda really like each other.

3. Hello! No commuting! (His old commute was 5-6 hours a day) Booo!

4. I always wanted to wear a MuiMui, hair rollers and slippers daily. Now my dream had FINALLY come true…

*tear of joy down left cheek* Weep with me….

Most days consist of running to the alley-facing windows to see what new alleyway action is happening, answering random collection calls for the old manager, DB (Dear Beloved)  tinkering on random breaking items, reading and eating. I also run an on-line vintage shop which is fun and adds to the income.

We manage about 40 affordable housing units in a formerly redeveloped area which was once known as “machine gun alley” supposedly. The old manager also showed us a bullet hole from the manager before him when a hit was put on him… Craziness.

We’re about 1 year into it and this is not something that I recommend to everyone. It can be pretty taxing with the incessant mariachi, crying children and noises that sound like gunshots to my untrained ears but actually aren’t. PLUS the constant sirens are old too…. oh, and the train horn at 2,4,6 am OH YEAH, and the trash-man coming at 6am every single Saturday right below our window. But what can I say? It’s home!

As I think of interesting things to say or need to vent about mariachi I will be updating this blog, maybe some photos… alleyway action, venting about mariachi music… what my days consist of.

The second annual Community Culture Fest was held yesterday in Downtown Northport. Though I didn’t get to stay too long, I took some pictures of everything. Volunteers spun cotton candy, children bounced down moonwalk slides and created their own art at Kentuck for Kids, while families gathered and listened to the musical stylings of the Alabama Blues Project. There was a whole assortment of music, including a Mariachi Band, which, unfortunately, I could not stick around to hear, free food, art and information on outreach programs for the  community. Last year the event was held at the newly-opened McKenzie Courts and drew a huge crowd with Ruben Studdard as the headlining act. There was a lot of diversity in the music they had this year. And Downtown Northport is a beautiful place to have an event.

Il “Día de Muertos” è una tradizione – dichiarata dall’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l’Educazione, la Scienza e la Cultura (UNESCO), Opera Maestra del Patrimonio Orale e Intangibile dell’Umanità – che si celebra in Messico, ma anche in altri paesi dell’America Latina, da almeno tremila anni.

I vivi omaggiano, il primo e il secondo giorno di novembre, i loro defunti con canti, balli, allestimento di altari, offerte votive, preparazioni di vari dolci tipici.

Fra i dolci più caratteristici, le Calaveras de dulce, teschi di marzapane decorato con il nome del defunto, da consumarsi frai parenti del morto; e il Pan de muerto, un pane dolce a forma di croce o di teschio, solitamente ricoperto di zucchero.

La festa è antichissima, ma nel tempo è divenuta anche un’evidente declinazione del sincretismo fra tradizione precolombiana e cattolicesimo, tipico di tutto il centro e sud America.

Per chi si trovasse a passare per Roma, ricordiamo che oggi 31 Ottobre presso il palazzo dell’Ambasciata Messicana in Piazza Navona 91, alle ore 18:00 si celebrerà il Dìa de muertos. Sarà possibile ammirare il tradizionale Altar de Muertos realizzato per l’occasione dalla Comunidad Mexicana de Roma insieme al Laboratorio di Artigianato Artistico Macías.
Saranno i Mariachi Romatitlán – gruppo musicale noto non solo in Italia ma anche in tutta l’Europa e nel mondo, – a esibirsi con il loro repertorio.
