Ja sowas – wir haben ja noch nie einen Post in der Kategorie »Aquarium« gepostet. Mon dieu! Hoffentlich gibt das keine – Achtung! – post-traumatischen Störungen. Dabei ist uns doch schon öfters mal was aus dem Netz ins Netz gegangen. Nu aber los…

…und zwar starten wir mit – nein, nicht mit Fish von Marillion oder Phish (die ja dieses Jahr nach fünfjähriger Trennung wieder zusammengefunden haben). Nicht, weil mir der Gag etwa zu billig wäre. Sondern weil ich da nix passendes gefunden habe, latürnich!

Es geht los mit Christopher Walken und seiner…äh…Cover-Version von Lady Gaga’s »Pokerface«. So geschehen kürzlich bei »Friday Night with Jonathan Ross« auf BBC One. Viel Spaß!

Aber mal Spaß beiseite – Frau Gaga kann schon was:

Kiedyś uwielbiałem zarówno albumy koncertowe, jak i składanki “The Best Of…”.

Kiedyś, czyli jakieś 15 lat temu. W latach 80. i 90. takie płyty były dla zespołu pewną nobilitacją. Nie każdy mógł sobie pozwolić na album live i nie każdy zasługiwał na “Greatest Hits”.

Dziś mamy okres szybkiego zysku i jeszcze szybszego eksploatowania gwiazd, gwiazdeczek oraz naszych portfeli.

Dwa przykłady:

1. Iron Maiden. W pierwszych 16 latach działalności na dziewięć albumów studyjnych przypadł jeden album koncertowy. Dzięki temu, wydany w 1985 roku “Live After Death” był rarytasem – długo oczekiwaną przez fanów płytą słusznie uznaną za jeden z ważniejszych albumów w historii zespołu. Obecnie system wydawniczy Maiden wygląda następująco: płyta->podwójny album “the best of…”->podwójny album koncertowy. I w koło  Macieju. Oczywiście zespół twierdzi, że chodzi im o młodszych fanów, którzy nie znają starego materiału… Jasne…

2. Gosia Andrzejewicz. Ostatnio wygrywa w kilku rankingach. W tym na najgłupszy tekst oraz w moim prywatnym – na najszybciej wydaną płytę “The Best of…” Młoda gwiazda, a raczej jej absolutnie genialny management stwierdzili, że dwa albumy to w zupełności wystarczająca liczba, żeby dokonać podsumowania kariery. Informacja stara, ponieważ od czasu “debestofa” zdążył się ukazać nowy album, ale i tak duży szacun za wydawniczą odwagę. Po cichu liczyłem, że po “The Best Of…” ukaże się złota kolekcja, a nie “Wojowniczka”.

Tyle gwoli przegadanego wstępu. Był mi potrzebny do recenzji nowej płyty Marillion ponieważ zgadam się z Mariuszm Hermą i zdanie “nie lubię składanek” nie jest tym, od którego chciałbym zacząć recenzję.

Marillion ma u mnie praktycznie nieograniczony kredyt zaufania. Tworzą muzykę trudną, to prawda, ale nie nagrali jeszcze słabego albumu. Mieli oczywiście lepsze i gorsze okresy, ale hasło MARILLION oznaczało pewien wysoki poziom, poniżej którego nie zeszli nigdy.

Marillion - Less Is More

Gdy na długo przez premierą “Less Is More” usłyszałem, że będzie to kompilacja starszych utworów w wersjach akustycznych trochę się skrzywiłem. Okazało się jednak, że zespół nie poszedł po linii najmniejszego oporu i na “Less Is More” zabrakło “Kayleigh”, “Lavendera” czy “Uninvited Guest”.

Muzycy wybrali bardzo ciekawe utwory z albumów na których śpiewa Steve Hogarth. Od “Happiness is the Road” przez “Anoraknophobię”, “marillion.com” po “Afraid of Sunlight”. Nie zabrakło też kilku utworów z kultowego “Brave” oraz z “Seasons End” – pierwszej płyty nagranej z Hogarthem.

Jednak na “Less Is More” nie dobór utworów jest najważniejszy, tylko wykonanie i aranżacja – a te są absolutnie mistrzowskie. Pomysł na nagranie aksustycznej płyty w najmniejszym stopniu nie ograniczył instrumentarium do gitar akustycznych, do czego przyzwyczaiła nas seria “MTV Unplugged”.

Oprócz gitar i fortepianu na albumie pojawiają się m.in. ksylofon, cymbały, dzwonki, harfa mechaniczna, harmonia, gitara portugalska, organy rurowe, dulcitone oraz dziesiątki mniejszych instrumentów perkusyjnych i strunowych.

Muzycy to rozbudowane instrumentarium wykorzystali do granic możlwiości. Idealnym przykładem jest znany z “Anoraknophobii” “Quarz”, gdzie w oryginale głównym motywem była bardzo ciekawa linia gitary basowej. Na “Less Is More” jej rolę przejęły… cymbałki. Takich zaskoczeń na tej płycie jest wiele. Widać, że Steve Rothery i spółka na łatwizną bynajmniej nie poszli. Nagrali album, który pozwoli odkrywać Marillion na nowo. Album bardzo melancholijny, niezbyt prosty w odbiorze i wymagający od słuchacza skupienia. Jednak za czas mu poświęcony odpłaca się pięknymi dźwiękami i pozytywnymi emocjami, których na “Less Is More” nie brakuje.

Dla fanów absolutny mus. Dla tych, którzy Marillion nie znają, bądź znają z radia (Radio Zet i RMF puszczają całe dwa utwory) to dobra płyta, od której można śmiało rozpocząć przygodę z muzyką tego zespołu.

I have over 8,000 items on my 80 GB Ipod, which equates to 26 days of continuous music.

Should I feel the urge, I could listen to music on a 24 hour basis for just under 4 weeks. I would probably go deaf or insane, but the option is there if I decided to walk this path.

I have purchased through Itunes 1,345 items, just over 4 days worth. I would be lying if I said that I have listened to everything that I have bought,  as I scroll down the list there are vast tracts of empty columns denoting play count etc.

I also have access to ;

•  2 films (Blues Brothers and Big Lebowski),
•  19 music videos (which includes Duran Duran, Nickelback, Gorillaz, Slipknot and Fatboy Slim)
•  11 TV shows – 3 of which are ones that I bought (Dr Who and Top Gear), the others are ones downloaded by my better half when her laptop was up the creek.

In other words, I don’t really have any idea what is on my Ipod anymore. And some of the purchases may have been made under the influence of alcohol.

I am probably not alone.

The problem is that having access to so much instant musical content doesn’t actually make me any happier. I can sometimes scroll through the lists of artists, playlists, albums and compilations for minutes at a time….becoming increasingly irritated as I fail to find what I am in the mood for.

So I end up listening to the same stuff again and again (Marillion, AC/DC, Porcupine Tree and Lemon Jelly).

Very occasionally I remember what I have on the device and I actually use it as its maker intended…..as a portable music library.

But then I get bored again and revert to my previous Ipod inertia.

The thing is, I have actually convinced myself that I have an eclectic musical collection and a varied array of styles and genres which make up a fully rounded audio personality.

But I don’t. I have lots of music by the same artists (292 songs by Marillion!), lots of odd little things from compilations and a whole heap of random stuff that I have lost track of.

Again, I am probably not alone.

So this week, I have decided to let the little elves that work inside the machine take over and just leave it on shuffle.

Of course, doing something like this is no fun if you don’t note down what actually plays…………after all, with over 8,000 songs to choose from the chances of hearing the same song twice is fairly minimal.

Or am I expecting too much from the Apple Elves?

Varmasti hieno ilta faneille on luvassa 6.11. Tavastialla kun Marillion saapuu paikalle akustisen kiertueensa merkeissä. Marillionin uusin levy Less is More sisältää nimenomaan akustisia versioita vanhoista lauluista. Lippuja on vielä saatavissa ainakin   Tiketissä.

Hoffnungslos 80er aber ich liiiebe diesen Song!

Transatlantic definitely knows how to keep their fans waiting. On October 27th they’ll release The Whirlwind, their first album in eight years. Fans don’t have to worry. Even after such a long break, the band is back in full force, reminding us why we’ve spent the past eight years with our fingers crossed, hoping these guys would finally get back together.

If I had to describe the album in one vague, ambiguous word, it would be, “upbeat.” Transatlantic doesn’t exactly do dark stuff. And while “darker” rhythms (that may not be the right word — more like somber) do pop up in a few tracks, most of the album is the up-tempo stuff we know and love. Think Duel with the Devil and Stranger in Your Soul.

The Whirlwind is one giant, 77-minute long song, and writing an album like this obviously has its pros and cons. Pros. It’s 77 minutes long! The album is constructed around a handful of major themes, and it’s interesting to see how those themes come back at different points in the music. We get everything we love and have come to expect from these guys. The melodic guitar and the playful keyboard riffs. The jazz rhythms and the hard rock. And while you can hear the influence of groups like Pink Floyd and the Beatles, the band has done a better job of incorporating those styles into their own music. The result is a richer, more mature sound.

Cons (?). If you’re a fan of Neal Morse’s solo albums, you know his music is very similar to Transatlantic, and I’m not really sure who influences who more. If I had to make comparisons, I would liken The Whirlwind to Lifeline, rather than Morse’s other albums, like Testimony or One. And while Morse has long since left the prog rock scene to pursue his career as a Christian singer, the church-centric lyrics are tamped down here. Notice I say “tamped down” and not “gone altogether.” It’s never bothered me that much. Other people feel differently. It’s all a matter of taste. I’m not sure that any of this stuff really counts as a complaint. Transatlantic has really delivered another solid album. And after such a long absence, that’s what fans are going to want. They don’t want something that’s been taken in an entirely new direction. They want to be reminded why they fell in love with these guys in the first place. Those people won’t be disappointed.

Just a short note about the album’s length. It is 77 minutes long. The promo copy I got had the entire album split up into twelve tracks, which personally, I like. But I’ve heard that the retail version will have the entire thing as one, giant song. If that’s the case, fast-forwarding through to your favorite parts is going to get really old really fast. Some people just aren’t going to like that. My copy only included the first disc, so I can’t speak as to what the special edition will offer. But if it’s anything like disc one, it’ll be some good listening.

At first, it took me a while to get into these guys. I picked up their first album back in 2000, gave it a spin and said, “Well that’s not for me.” I put it away and didn’t pick it up again for a few years. I gave it another spin and suddenly, I loved it. It was like turning on a switch. If you’re like me and these guys don’t immediately grab you on the first try, stick with them. You won’t be sorry.

Hat Marillion eigentlich was mit Marillen zu tun?

Marillion is one of the most ridiculous bands of all time.  I mean that in the best sense possible.  They’re gloriously, stupendously ridiculous, and I’ve loved them for roughly twenty years.  They’re a Scottish band that trafficked in prog rock in the mid-80’s – a sort of throwback to Peter Gabriel-era Genesis and early Yes –  just as post-punk was giving birth to modern alternative music on both sides of the Atlantic.  But they stuck to their guns and did 20-minute long songs about Grendel from Beowulf and wore face paint and capes onstage.  I’m not going to pretend there’s anything remotely redeeming to this band.  The music is pretentious, the lyrics are pretentious (if surprisingly literate and smart), the performances are silly … and yet I find it inexplicably great.

Just check out this video.  Neon-colored puzzle suit and headband for the singer?  Check.  Leather pants and bouffant hairdo for the bassist?  Check. Drummer wearing one of the band’s own t-shirts?  Check.  Guitarist with a big fluffy mullet?  Check.  And … is that a girl dancing on the speakers?  Oh yes it is.  It’s preposterous and wonderful.

This is one of my favorite songs from their 1987 album, Clutching at Straws. This is “Slainte Mhath.”

Bardzo często na koncertach muzycy traktowali go jak jeden utwór i grali w całości. Na powyższym nagraniu słyszycie trzy pierwsze części “Misplaced Childhood”: “Pseudo Silk Kimono”, “Kayleigh” i “Lavender”. Środkowa kompozycja to najbardziej udany singiel zespołu. W Wielkiej Brytanii wdarł się na pierwsze miejsce list przebojów.

We have a couple of live versions of this week’s song, which is Marillion’s powerful peace anthem Forgotten Sons, from their 1983 debut album Script For A Jester’s Tear.

The song refers explicitly to The Troubles in Northern Ireland, then at their height, but the poignant, hard-hitting lyrics could just as easily refer to any conflict and the young, aimless, working-class men on both sides who end up as pawns, manipulated and sacrificed by faceless bureaucrats in a deadly, never-ending game.

Qualcuno mi ha fatto notare d’avere le traveggole, e forse solo per non ammettere a me stesso di cavalcare l’onda verso gli “anta”, ho scritto nel precedente articolo, poi corretto, che avrei stilato la classifica degli ultimi 30 anni di rock progressivo, scordandomi un intero decennio. Ma puó anche essere che mi sia inconsciamente dimenticato il periodo in questione. É risaputo infatti che con l’avvento del punk il rock progressivo venne letteralmente fatto a pezzi.

Nonostante gli anni ottanta abbiano rigettato il barocchismo del genere, l’underground progressivo ha continuato comunque a sfornare album. Questa é la selezione che ho fatto dal 1979 al 1988, rimanendo comunque sui grandi nomi.

Holidays in Eden, llençat al mercat el 1.991, és el 6è disc de Marillion, i el segon amb Steve Hogarth com a cantant. Si en l’anterior, Seasons End, ja es feia palès un lleuger canvi en l’estil del grup, en aquest encara queda més clara la influència de Hogarth en les noves composicions i el seu pes en les mateixes malgrat portar tant poc temps a la banda.

 La discussió sobre si eren millors els Marillion amb Fish o ho són amb Steve és un carrer sense sortida, que tothom en pensi el que vulgui, jo tinc l’opinió que igual com amb Fish ens van regalar àlbums magistrals com Fugazi o Misplaced Childhood, la nova etapa amb Steve ens n’ha donat d’altres també tant bons com aquest Holidays in Eden, per tant jo no m’atreveixo a posar-ne un davant de l’altre.

 Un dels temes més brillants del disc, és aquesta magnífica Waiting To Happen, on llueix especialment la veu de Hogarth amb tots els seus matiços.

Holidays in Eden, lanzado en 1.991, es el 6º álbum de Marillion, y el segundo con Steve Hogarth como cantante. Si en el anterior, Seasons End, ya se mostraba un claro cambio en el estilo del grupo, en este queda todavía más patente la influencia de Steve en las nuevas composiciones y su peso en las mismas, pese a llevar tan poco tiempo en la banda.

 La discusión sobre si eran mejores los Marillion con Fish o lo son con Steve es un callejón sin salida, todo el mundo es libre de tener su opinión, la mía es que igual que con Fish nos regalaron álbumes magistrales como Fugazi o Misplaced Childhood, la nueva etapa con Hogarth nos ha dado otros también tan buenos como este Holidays in Eden, por lo tanto yo no me atrevo a poner a uno por delante del otro.

 Uno de los temas más brillantes del disco es esta magnífica Waiting To Happen, donde destaca especialmente la voz de Hogarth con todos sus matices.
