I’m very, very new to this whole Lady Gaga thing. And after taking in what little has been presented to me over the last few days, I’m eager to see and hear more. I’m looking forward to seeking out everything she’s put out there that I haven’t had a chance to witness yet and see just how I feel about it.

I’ll present the evidence to you in the same way I experienced it. I’d heard the references to Lady Gaga’s clothes and craziness and even the strange rumor that she’s a hermaphrodite (pretty sure it’s not true). But in all that time in the last couple of months, I didn’t hear any music of hers. I ended up seeing the music video for “Poker Face,” which was intriguing if a little underwhelming. It was good, and weird, but I wasn’t drawn into it.

Then I saw her new video for “Bad Romance”:

This video is fucking awesome. The song is goddamn great. It took a few views to confirm this, but now I’m a believer. The Lady Gaga experience is supremely entertaining, and while she clearly has an entire creative crew working behind her, I know that this all stems from what she embraces creatively. All of the abrasive, outlandish aesthetics of her image are perfectly calculated and, in my opinion, never miss a beat.

I’m also appreciative of her new album’s title, The Fame Monster, and how this song embraces the monster motif in the costumes and choreography. I love the inspiration from ALIEN, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, NOSFERATU, Coppola’s DRACULA, and even some “Thriller” thrown in for good measure. I’m sure there are others I haven’t even picked up on yet. I really dig those white latex costumes at the beginning that looks like the xenomorph from ALIEN mixed with the Bride of Frankenstein mixed with the Mouth of Sauron. Much of the choreography is well-conceived yet straightforward, but then you have these awkward, jerky parts, with arms locked in the air, claws outstretched, like Count Orlok from NOSFERATU or the she-bitch from ARMY OF DARKNESS. I really enjoy the mishmash of visual influences, and enjoy it all the more combined with the futuristic sci-fi dance aesthetics.

A little credit must be thrown toward director Francis Lawrence, but not reluctantly. He helped hone her ideas and figure out how to pull it off, combining horror and pop without totally losing the audience. His work also shows off a bit of her acting abilities as well, a good sign for the future expansion of her art. I’m a sucker for those uber-dramatic extreme close-ups on her red, teary eyes. She also has a terrifying spine.

To me, she is that perfect combination of talent and showmanship that made Marilyn Manson so much fun back in the day. If Mechanical-Animals-era Marilyn Manson teamed up with Lady Gaga in her present form, I think they would be unstoppable. I think they would destroy us all.

I must say, however, that all of this gushing isn’t based only on the “Bad Romance” video. I believe the very same day, shortly thereafter, I saw the following video of Lady Gaga before she was Lady Gaga. It’s a video of her performing two songs on piano at a talent show at NYU, as Stefani Germanotta:

The difference between these two is night and day, and seeing how she took her phenomenal singing, songwriting, and composition talents and developed it into her Lady Gaga persona is fascinating to me. And as far as I can tell, this image she’s created is of her own doing, her own idea of what she wanted her musical experience to be.

Now, I know I’ve only scratched the surface, and perhaps my perceptions and opinions could be obliterated upon further investigation, but I doubt it. The pop know-how and euro/80s-synth dance displayed so far has me confident it will be something I can appreciate. My hope is that as her fanbase increases, it frees her to experiment all the more with her already bold musical persona.

They were talking about… nu-metal??? Yes, nu-metal. Frigging hell mallcore stuff like Slipknot and Marilyn Manson. There were even people who mentioned Linkin Park and Flyleaf.

Seriously! There was nothing on it but mallcore. -.-

Next one was a blog. He was talking about Slipknot and how much he likes them and on another blog was an article on Myanmar metal scene and the author was talking about Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium. Frigging Metalcore.

PREVIEW: Cate Blanchett’s Bob Dylan Performance in I’m Not There.

Let’s face it, it’s only a matter of time until there’s a Lady Gaga movie, seeing as she already owns the face of pop music. The dilemma however is finding an actress who could accurately portray the enigma that is Lady Gaga.

The actress needs to be young, sexy, strut with serious attitude, and has to be a little weird. It crossed my mind several times that maybe the only person who fits the role is herself, but ever since 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (2005), I learned it’s not fun watching celebrities play themselves. Even some of the best actresses in the world would see the challenge of becoming Lady Gaga, and that’s why making a list of candidates was so damn hard.

1) Evan Rachel Wood

Ever since her tour-de-force performance in Thirteen (2003), Wood has secretly solidified herself as one of the most talented young actresses out there today. Not only does Wood have the talent to pull off the role, she’s also pretty weird–she dated Marilyn Manson, for crying out loud! They also semi-look alike, and I’m not going to knock Wood or any other actress for not having Lady Gaga’s honker–that’s what good makeup is for. And sex appeal? Check.

2) Sienna Miller

Sienna Miller is another talented actress who too often doesn’t receive her due. Not only is Miller talented as hell, like when she played Edie Sedgewick in Factory Girl (2006), but she also evokes sex and attitude. Rachel McAdams is talented too, but she doesn’t have the personality to pull off Lady Gaga—that’s the difference.

3) Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman is probably too cute to play Lady Gaga but her body of work shows versatility, like Alice in Closer (2004) and Evey in V for Vendetta (2005). Also, if you ever saw her role in Hotel Chevalier (2007), Wes Anderson’s short film, you know how bold and sexy she can be.

4) Keira Knightley

Ever since the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, I’ve lost complete respect for this woman. However, she has similar facial features and best of all–she’s English. And we all know how much Lady Gaga likes pretending she’s English.

5) Cate Blanchett

I know this is a stretch since Blanchett is a good 20 years older than Gaga, but in my mind, if you can play Bob Dylan like she did in I’m Not There (2007), you can play anyone. She got robbed at the Oscars, in my opinion, and with enough CGI, she could look like a 23-year old. She’s quite possibly one of the best actresses of our time, so it’s wrong to leave her out of the conversation.

Gonna be honest. I fucking hate Pitchfork Media with a bloody passion. Aside from getting music news (which actually starts to suck ass at a certain point too), all we get are underwhelming and stupid album reviews and lists that have no significance. I mean really, those pricks are ready to blow all of those dudes in the Fiery Furnaces anytime, anywhere. Fuck that. So, I made my own list for what was good in 2009. Yeah, I realize the year is not over just yet, so if anything good comes up, I’ll slap it up here. So without further delay, the best and worst of 2009 according to me.

The Best

Daisy – Brand New
With in a few minutes of listening to this album, I already decided that it was great. The bass on the opening track is fucking raw and the guitar is crunchy as fuck. Great record. Like it a lot better than the other one.

Horehound – The Dead Weather
Never was a huge fan of the Kills, but this record shows how Jack White can take a walking disaster like Allison Mosshart and turn it into gold. The White Stripes evil twin indeed.

The Open Door EP – Death Cab For Cutie
Yes, I like Death Cab. Blow me. Ben Gibbard is fucking genius at times.

The West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum – Kasabian
Just a badass album all around. Tough lyrics and interesting guitar hooks. Plus, these dudes are good friends with Noel Gallagher of Oasis. That adds to their already outstanding credibility.

Jesus Says Relax – The Tits
Got this CD for free at Grimey’s earlier this year. Thought it was going to be a bit of a joke. Decided to give it a spin, and it was fucking awesome. Totally had what the Nashville music scene was missing: balls. Big ones at that. It’s a shame that they broke up. At least we’ve still got Bad Cop.

Them Crooked Vultures – Them Crooked Vultures
Josh Homme + Dave Grohl + John Paul Jones. All three have come from great bands and all three show that while they can hold their own, they can come together on a project and make a record that will totally blow everyone away.

Cage the Elephant – Cage the Elephant
Ignoring how overplayed “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” is, this album is still fucking stellar. Lead singer looks like he’s already done too many drugs, yet the band is just getting their feet of the ground. They’ve got my vote already.

It’s Blitz – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Karen O is fucking crazy. And I love it. Missed out on this band at Lollapalooza to see Tool. Heard this record after and got pissed. Not that they should have replaced Tool, but that Perry Farrell should have retired Jane’s Addiction or better yet, not bring the cocksucking Killers to the festival and put the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s on for Sunday so I could have seen them. Oh well. Anyways, killer record.

Rain Machine – Rain Machine
First time I heard this record, I fucking hated it. I thought that Kyp should have stayed in TV on the Radio. When I gave it a second listen, after knowing what I was listening to, I liked it. A lot. Word of advice. Kyp has something that many artists don’t have today. That’s called balls. He could have made a record that sounds identical to the stuff he has done with TotR, but instead of being a pussy, he decided to piss people who wanted predictable shit and made a record he wanted to make. And it’s good if you realize it’s not TotR. Fuck it, it’s a good record all around.

Immolate Yourself – Telefon Tel Aviv
Released just two days before the death of Charles Cooper, this album showcases how fucking cool the group was and how awesome it could have been if Cooper hadn’t died. Depressing that he’s dead? Yes. But damn did he go out with one hell of a trippy album.

The Dreams We Have As Children – Noel Gallagher
Okay, so this is not really a new album or anything, but rather a live recording of Noel Gallagher doing a solo show. Let’s just consider this like a lifetime achievement award, considering that Oasis is done, and that now Noel is going to be cranking out some awesome solo albums. Gonna be fucking great.

The Worst

Relapse – Eminem
Apparently, this album is what Eminem sounds like after he got over hard drugs. However, he probably should have stayed on them, cause this album blows, hardcore.

The Resistance – Muse
“Love is our resistance.” Really? C’mon Matt Bellamy. Black Holes and Revolutions was great. You went from sounding like an awesome heavy Radiohead rip off, to a horribly bad Queen rip off. Then again, neither Thom Yorke or Freddie Mercury took huge exaggerated breaths after each single lyric sung either nor have either made an album this retarded.

The High End of Low – Marilyn Manson
Listened to the first track of this crappy album because I heard that Manson had finally got Twiggy back (who wrote the decent songs on a couple records). Big mistake. No one can save this train wreck of Oxycontin and pretentiousness. This dude needs to just OD already and get it over with.

Ratitude – Weezer
Quote of the year: “I’m not Prince or Rivers Cuomo who brags about having hundreds of great songs,” Reznor said. “And to that I would say, Prince, if you have a hundred great songs or a thousand, how about picking a few and putting them on your record that you’ve put out because your last several have sucked. Full Circle – Creed
It seems like 2009 was a year for shit bands to get back together and record albums. I’m gonna be honest and say that I’m surprised that I’m not hugely depressed right now, considering that Limp Bizkit and Creed have gotten back together in the same year. Don’t know what keeps me going, but if Fallout Boy decides to get back together, I’m heading for the tallest building and taking the easy way out. Too much shit in one year.

Out of Ashes – Dead Sunrise
That whiny singer from Linkin Park made another band. That’s like a rapist going back for seconds. Let’s stop this fucker before it’s too late.

The Circle – Bon Jovi
A washed up wannabe-rocker who’s only fan base exists with alcoholic 50 year old bored housewives.

Aim and Ignite – Fun.
Shit, and I thought Panic at The Disco was bad. I found out about this shitty band from some idiot on Facebook’s constant ranting about it (to be more specfic, a former roommate). After giving it a listen, I checked my ears, and sure enough, yep, there was blood. Moral of the story? You probably shouldn’t check out music if someone post it on facebook as “Fun. is SOOOOOO gooood”. Especially when you know that kid is a complete tool.

ไม่นาน ต่อมาในสมัย Mechanical Animals ประมาณ 1998-1999 มีหลาย ๆ อย่างเปลี่ยนแปลงไป Zimmy ที่น่ารักออกจากวงแล้วแทนด้วย John5 ทั้ง ๆ ที่เพลง Promote ของอลบัมเป็นผลงานของ ZimZum Twiggy และ Manson ร่วมกันแต่ง นอกจากนี้ Michael Beinhorn จาก Soundgarden และ Hole ยังถูก Manson จ้างให้มาเป็น producer คนใหม่ในวงอีก ปลาขิงต้องจำเชื่อฟังเขา เพราะนายคนนี้เคยไล่ Patty Schemel มือกลองคนเก่าของวง Hole ออกจากวง ปลาขิงมาบ่นว่าแต่เดิมก่อนมีไอ้นี่มาเขาทำงานเพื่อวง แต่ครานี้ต้องมาฟังคำสั่งไอ้นี่ Manson จ้างไอ้หมอนี่มาเพื่อทำให้เสียงดนตรีดีขึ้น แต่ทำไมต้องให้ไอ้นี่มาสั้งให้เขาปรับปรุงการเล่นกลองไม่รู้เท่าไร แทนที่จะให้มันลงมาเล่นเองอย่างที่มันชอบเสียเลย ที่ปลาขิงโกรธได้ขนาดนี้เพราะ Beinhorn ไม่เคยแสดงให้เขาดู หรือสอนเขา เอาแต่สั่งเขา เหมือนกับปลาขิงไม่เชื่อว่าไอ้นี่เก่งจริง แต่ในที่สุดเขาก็ล้มความคิดเขาซะ เมื่อเขาพบว่า Beinhorn เป็นคนเก่ง

ปลาขิงเป็นคนที่แปลกที่สุดในวง เพราะเขาไม่เสพ ไม่สูบ และไม่ดื่ม Manson บรรยายเขาว่า เขาเงียบที่สุดและจนดูน่ากลัวที่สุด เหมือนกับระเบิดเวลาที่รอการระเบิดครั้งใหญ่ Manson ยังให้ฉายาเขาอีกว่า “the strangest and quietest person in the band” (ที่จริงอาจจะเป็นคนปกติสุด แต่เทียบกับทุกคนในวงที่แปลก) นอกจากนี้ปลาขิงยังเป็นสมาชิกคนหนึ่งที่อยู่ในวง Marilyn Manson ได้นาน นาน นานมาก ๆ รองจาก Pogo (Gacy) (1989-ปัจจุบัน) ปัจจุบัน ปลาขิงทำ side project กับวง Martyr Plot หลังจากเข้าโรงพยาบาลเพราะตกเวที ทำให้ Chris Vrenna (ex-NIN) มาเล่นแทนชั่วคราว

Järjeks oma eilsele postitusele, pean ma siiski ka ühe vahepealsesse mittekirjutamise aega jääva seikluse üles märkima, sest see on tõesti seda ka väärt.

Nimelt, seoses Marilyn Mansoni kontserdiga, käisin ma K.-ga nädal aega tagasi Lätis. Täpsemalt siis Riias nagu kõik isegi arvata oskavad.
Jättes selgitamata selle, miks me hommikusele broneeritud bussile ei jõudnud ja miks me ka lõuna ajal väljuvale bussile ei jõudnud, siis oli vähemalt minu jaoks küll suur üllatus, et Tartust niiiii vähe(!) busse Riiga läheb. Oleks siis, et saaks ka rongiga, aga nagu teame, on rongiliiklus Lätti veel vaid tulevikumuusika.

Kohale me lõpuks aga siiski saime. Küll lennujaamast tellitud bussiga, poole pikema ajakulu ja lennupileti hindadega (kuna lennuk ei saabunud), aga siiski. Positiivne selles sõidu puhul oli aga vähemalt see, et bussijuht tuli Riiast läbi lennujaama sõites vastu me palvele meie hotellist võimalikult lähedalt mööda sõita nind viis meid peaaegu et hotelli ukse ette. Selle üle olime me väga õnnelikud, sest olime Mansoni kontserdile juba päris palju hilinenud (kontsert pidi algama kell 19.30). Mis ülejäänud bussiseltskond sellest peaaegu et vanalinnas ja munakividel ringi kolistamisest arvas võis vaid naerukihina järgi oletada. Igal juhul suur aitäh sellele vastutulelikule bussijuhile!

Hotellis kerkis kohe esile sularahaprobleem, sest kiirelt kontserdile jõudmiseks pidime me taksosõidule ümber orienteeruma ja loobuma oma algsest plaanist jalgsi Arenasse minna. Et aga eurosid oli, siis oli ainuke võimalus hotellist kiiresti midagi hotellituppa juua osta, mida K. muidugi ka tegi. Edasi ruttu tuppa, väike meik ja vein ning edasi Arenasse!

Kohale jõudes oli rõõm aga piiritu, sest kell oli küll ligi 21 juba, kuid kontsert ei olnudki veel alanud! Tohutult hea meel oli. Kohad olid meil fännitsoonis ja see oli kohe eriti boonus vastukaaluks möödunud pikale väsitavale päevale, eriti kui arvestada seda, kui üksteise vastu kiilutud oli tagapool rüselev seltskond. Samas oleks ma aga kindlasti eelistanud olla seal, kui et tribüünil toolil istunud. Ausalt öeldes ma ei saa aru sellistest inimestest, kes rockkontserdile nagu Beethovenit kuulama tulevad. Kummaline minu jaoks.

Kontsert oli hea, isegi väga, väga! Mansoni sülje-õllevihma kaela saamise võimalusest ma küll ei vaimustunud, kuid tegelikult ega see nii masendavalt ei häirinud ka, sest eks see kõik teebki Mansonist Mansoni. Kui vinguda tahaks, siis võibolla seepärast, et mõningate lugude vahel olid natuke liiga pikad pausid, eriti enne viimast lugu. Ent samas kompenseeris selle täiesti järgneva loo ajal toimunud väikeste valgete paberebemete sadu. Äge oli!

Peale kontserti ostsime õlut (naljakas oli müntide eest osta, harjumatu, selline tunne nagu asjad oleks jube odavad) ja vaatlesime fuajee põrandal õlut juues kohalikke. Mulle näiteks tundus, et Läti inimeste seas on rohkem alternatiivselt huvitavalt riietunud kontserdikülastajaid kui ma Eestis näinud olen, aga mine tea, võibolla teen nüüd eestlastele liiga. Samas plusspunktiks eestlastele pean aga ütlema, et minu arvates on eestlased kontserditel rohkem hüppajad-kargajad-kaasaelajad; [ja nemad (lätlased) veel ütlevad, et meie oleme aeglased (mittetemperamentsed)... ]

Hotelli tagasi minek just kõige libedamalt ei kulgenud. Mõtlesime, et läheme jala. Tagasitee oli meil enda arvates taksosõiduga hotellist Arenasse küllaltki hästi meelde jäänud ja nii me siis julgelt teele asusimegi Algus läks isegi päris hästi; imetlesime tuledes Riia linna ja selle arhidektuuri. Ja kuigi metsikult palju maju olid halli värvi, minu arvates valdav enamus, siis oli see siiski romantiline jalutuskäik missugune. Eriti hämmastasid meid mitmed öiselt tuledes säravad värvi muutvad majad, Eestis ma selliseid näinud pole. No et majaseinte värv vaheldub. Ma saan aru, et kuskilt suunatakse värvi vahetav elektrivalgus peale, aga kust täpselt, see jäigi kahjuks mõistatuseks, kuna nende majade lähemalt uurimise retke me ka ette võtta ei viitsinud, sest need majad peost väsinud meie jaoks nii piisavalt lähedal ka polnud

Nojah, ühesõnaga, kas seepärast, et K. mööda üht kõrvaltänavat pidi natuke otsemini minna tahtis või muu pärast, aga mingi aja pärast olime me väga-väga ära eksinud ega osanud enam kuhugi poole edasi liikuda. Püüdsime küll bussipeatustes asuvatelt linnakaartidelt õiget suunda leida, kuid… me ju ei teadnud, mis tänavalgi meie hotell asus! Katastroof Kontserdile minekuga läks tõesti nii kiireks, et unustasin linnakaardi hotelli, tänava nime me ka kumbki ei mäletanud ja majanumbrit ammugi mitte. Taksoga sõites küll püüdsin jälgida, et mis tänavaid mööda me sõidame, aga Läti iela`de (läti k. tänav) tänavanimede siltidel olid nimetused nii väikeses kirjas, vaid tänavanumber suurelt, et mõtlesin hirmuga, et kui oleks oma autoga tulnud, siis mitte linna tundvana oleks ikka väga raske olnud orienteeruda, kui linnatänavatel sõites tänavate nimesid lugeda ei näeks. Või huvitav, kuidas neil omalgi mittekohalikud Riias autodega orienteeruvad, peavad auto kinni kui tänavanime uurida tahavad? Alati pole ju tihedas linnaliikluses seda võimalust ja teedeatlast pole samuti kõigil alati kaasas. Ah, eks ise teavad…

Igatahes, kuna vähemalt hotelli nime me teadsime(hurraaa! ), siis otsustasime inimeste käest küsida, et kus see hotell asub, aga millegipärast polnud keegi sellest hotellist kuulnudki! No tore, siis ei jäänud meil lõpuks muud üle kui alla anda ning takso võtta; tüdimus oli juba ja külm ka. Jah, takso me saime, kuid tuli välja, et see võõrkeelena vaid vene keelt rääkiv taksojuht polnud ka sellest hotellist midagi kuulnud! Ent temapoolne kõne oma dispetserile ja saimegi lõpuks liikvele.

Taksosõitudest jäi eredalt veel muidugi meelde venekeelne raadiojaam ja taksojuhtide nahaalsus arveldamisel kliendile vähem raha tagasi anda kui peaks. No kohe päris palju vähem. Et kui tähele ei pane ja häält ei tee, siis nende aususele lootmine oleks igal juhul naiivsus olnud.

Lõpuks olime hotellis tagasi. Jeeeee!  Jõime veini ning tutvusime Läti telekanalitega … natuke Ja kuigi kogu meie hotellis viibimise aja vannitoas miskit vaikselt undas nagu pesumasin, (äkki oligi kuskil teisepool seina ), siis ma pole ammu nii hästi maganud kui seal! Bussisõit tagasi Eestisse möödus peaasjalikult magades. Võin kinnitada, et bussi tagaistmel, isegi kui see pikk iste kahekesi sõbralikult pooleks jagada, on see isegi päris mõnus.

Seiklus oli nagu oli, aga ometigi läheksin ma iga kell sinna tagasi. Nii palju jäi ju veel nägemata. Ja pealegi: vaja on ju veel välja uurida, et kuidas see värviline valgus nendele majaseintele ikkagi saab
