First, a note: apparently my last post has caused controversy amongst readers. Reason #1: not everyo

First, a note: apparently my last post has caused controversy amongst readers. Reason #1: not everyone thinks you need to have a well-considered thought to post. Reason #2: some people thought I had given up on the 7-day blog post challenge. On the first matter, I’ll let you be the judge. On the second, I’ll clear up the confusion and say, not true. Giving up would be totally un-Finnish. Here is post #6, written at the request of Carolyn’s mom.

You’ll see a lot of this poppy print in Helsinki. It’s not totally unfamiliar in the States, either. The Finns are pretty proud of it. Marimekko, the Finnish design company, makes textiles, purses, notebooks, dinner trays, and umbrellas with this, its trademark pattern. It’s cute, bright, and cheery, and…I’m sick of it.

Marimekko seems to be a pretty big point of pride for Finns, and since Finns don’t say anything bad about Finland, I’m probably a total jerk for it. But, for me, Marimekko is Finland’s Vera Bradley, the maker of the quilted purses that somehow went from being my grandmother’s choice of handbag to every preppy teenager’s status statement. It’s cute at first, and then, you see it everywhere, and even if it’s a simple, nondescript item, you somehow know what brand made it.

That seems like such a common thing to Americans, right? Liking something until it gets too “mainstream,” too recognized. In America, it’s coolest to be ahead of the game, before your time, into something “before everyone else was into it.” Finns are very proud of Finland, though, and Finnish things that make it to the world stage are a pretty big deal for them. In Finland, you buy Marimekko goods because they’re nice, well-made, and because they’re Finnish. I’m not getting a big sense that anyone is “so over” Marimekko. So I’m trying to gather…is this accurate, or am I missing things? How do trends “happen” in Finland? How does that influence consumption? Self-branding? Marketing?

When we were in Rochester up at the Mayo Clinic, I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon a shop called Counterpoint. It was just about as cool as any museum of modern art shop. You know the kind – all the exciting Italian designers, as well as fun gadgets, interesting books, etc. As it so happened, they had the largest amount of Marimekko products that I have ever seen in one place, in real life.

Silly me – I must be living under a rock or something, because this whole time I’ve been thinking that Marimekko was Japanese. Wrong. It’s Finnish. Well of course it is! Because anything cool is coming from the northern European countries. Anyway, there were tons of amazing fabrics, eye-catching pillows, and these amazing melamine trays that I wanted in every single pattern available. They also had some of the Marimekko clothes, but I’m just not that into their apparel. The cut is a little too…. generous. And the prices are astronomical. Not that the rest of the Marimekko line is inexpensive – it’s pricey, but the home goods are more reasonably priced.

I might have to troll around over at eBay….

Photo from The Boston Globe.

A few weeks ago as I was rushing through Harvard Square, a glint of Marimekko fabric caught my eye. Could it be!? A huge Marimekko flagship store in Harvard Square!? Too good to be true, although there is a Marimekko concept store in Cambridge. I had forgotten about it completely, until I read an article in the Globe about the Design Research installation at the Design Research building in Harvard Square.

D/R in 1972 (photo found on Flickr.)

I was unfamiliar with Design Research, but after doing a little research of my own, I came to learn that it was an interior furnishings and lifestyle accessories store started by architect Benjamin Thompson in 1953, right in Cambridge, Mass. D/R brought a lot of mid-century pieces into the local culture, and it’s most notably recognized as being the first US business that carried Marimekko textiles and clothing. In fact, Jackie O. bought a Marimekko dress at the Brattle Street store and was photographed wearing it for cover of Life magazine, spawning the Marimekko trend thats waxed and waned in the US over the past forty years.

The current D/R street-view installation celebrates both Benjamin Thompson and Marimekko. It is a recreation of the original lifestyle store that stood there until the late 70s, complete with imported pots from France (brought to the states from the Thompsons’ friend — and fellow Cambridge dweller — Julia Child; Thompson’s collection of butcher block tables; Marimekko frocks; and white Haitian-cotton covered couches. Unfortunately you can’t go inside, but the all glass facade is intentionally conducive to browsing.

Here are some great articles and blog posts I’ve found about the installation:

The Moment: “Now Showing | A Look Back at Design Research”

The Cottage (run by event organizer Nancy Hemenway)

A Bit Late: “D/R Rising”

And finally, “Through a glass brightly” from The Boston Globe.

Good to know: The D/R installation will be up and running through December 2009.

I have wanted to write something about retail for a few months now, but the thoughts wouldn’t

I have wanted to write something about retail for a few months now, but the thoughts wouldn’t form and the ideas didn’t gel so I have been letting it simmer on another burner. But today I read a little article about the (defunct) Boston store Design Research and it came together for me.

In the summer while I was in Europe I found very few retail stores that spoke to the place that they operated in. If you were looking for an Isabel Marant dress, J Brand jeans, See by Chloe or Phillip Lim you were in luck because every city has a tasteful boutique outfitted with white walls and a chandelier that carries those lines. But now that we all travel and we all have access to the same things, what makes us identify a store with its location? Or more specifically, what makes a store in Barcelona a Barcelona store?

Every city has heritage stores that are delightful (Barcelona has espadrilles makers La Manual Alpargatera, I’m not sure what Vancouver has that could compare but I am open to suggestions), but what about the next generation of retail? What is an example of a new store that is so intrinsically linked with a city’s culture? I know that stores do not exist just for tourists but what does it say about a city when there is no new development of a retail culture that is unique and self-supporting?

So, back to Design Research. This is a store that speaks to me in the way it approached design holistically (clothing/furniture/house wares) and with humour. Too often I find retail stores are either too generic or so rarefied they forget that design can be an experience shared by all. And you don’t have to carry only local products to be a local store that could not exist anywhere else in the world. You can offer a lot to people in your city that is useful, well made and original and do it in a way that captures the imagination of visitors as well. Design Research seems like a very optimistic American store where groovy families could go buy new cutlery and Mom could get a Marimekko dress. Could that happen now? Would people find it Utopian and flaky? Too European perhaps? Or just too middle class?

Another store that I think achieves a level of retail greatness that is unique to it’s location is Vinçon in Barcelona (below, some of their shopping bags throughout the years).

I am feeling very lucky right now. The builders got the roof on a couple of weeks ago and a few day

I am feeling very lucky right now. The builders got the roof on a couple of weeks ago and a few days later the rain came; It’s much needed, there has been very little rain here in Kent and the garden has been looking a little pathetic as a result, but oh am I glad we got the roof on first! The builders took a break last week, on another job and waiting for our windows to be ready but before they left they put our new staircase in which is a major development as it’s straight so for the first time in 3 years we are able to move some of the larger pieces of furniture upstairs. This includes my beloved glass fronted cabinate which is one of 3 items I bought while I was waiting for the sale of my first flat to complete, many, many years ago (good old Ilkley Salerooms have a lot to answer for). I have always assumed it would house my fabric and nic-nak collection which, of course, would be perfectly displayed through it’s lovely glass doors. In reality it has been stuffed to the gills with all sorts over the past few years, it’s like a Tardis and on emptying it to carry upstairs I filled all the kitchen surfaces with it’s contents.

And that’s just some of it, there was also a large box of of old sketch books and art supplies and another of millinery bits and bobs along with my most precious vintage books.

Whilst the said cabinate has been in the living room we (well, I) put a plain ‘etching’ film on the front, party to hide the mess inside but also because the glass is not safety glass, so should the boys break it the film should hold the glass fragments together, at least that’s the theory. I decided to remove this and replace with an etching film containing a pattern from FrostBrite. We have used this design before in the bathroom and I really like it as it works well with all our Marimekko blinds. We have also used film from PurlFrost in the past who have some nice designs but are a little more expensive.

(This is a shot of the bathroom window as it’s hard to see the design on the cabinet glass).

There is a definite knack to attaching the film, I rushed and creased it whilst trying to peel of the backing paper, I hadn’t enough time and it was getting dark. I am rather cross with myself, but it’s done now. The other thing I noticed was the film from FrostBite isn’t as dense as the one we have used from PurlFrost so creates a more see through effect. Still, I like it and feel happier that the glass is a little safer.

Just to illustrate how long ago I imagined this cabinet in my ’studio’ I bought this paper from the large Paperchase on Totternaham Court Road

for lining the shelves over 3 years ago (shuuush, don’t tell the husband, he already thinks I’m nuts but I tend to buy things I fall in love with if I see where I plan to use them, I just didn’t think it would be 3 years). They used to have a floor of handmade and art paper, not sure if they still do?

The best thing is being able to have some of my vintage stash out on display, mostly things that belonged to my Gran and finally being able to put my fabric away safe from dust and direct light.

Last shot is of the lovely Hector Wall Light…not sure where it came from, I am a canny internet shopper and spent a while getting the lowest price, we have one on either side of the room. I bought a Hector bedside lamp years ago, in fact from Laura Ashley for a very, very reasonable price before they became a hit and the price soared.

So, the builders are back next week and hopefully they will be all done by Friday and I can have my house back. I am rather too excited!

(If the f-word is NSFW, then don’t scroll down until you get home!)

I’m not feeling very serious today! This is a good thing!

I want to make dumplings soon. These two posts should get anyone through the process easily. Here and here. They are a bit labor intensive but soooo rewarding!

Speaking of food, on a fashion-centric blog, I really liked this post from Fashion is Spinach. It’s a swell revelation to have… a nice little reality check.

I love this video (and the song)! It’s not the official video but instead, a very creative fan made it!

The Keyboard Cat t-shirt made it on Threadless - of course! I can’t decide whether to get it or not… after all my oohs and ahhs, I’m really agonizing over it! damnit! Where would I wear it? I think the answer is EVERYWHERE!

My fave screamo (they call themselves metalcore) band ever, Underoath is coming back to the Norva on November 30th. This will be my 5th time seeing them. I’m 30 years old and I’m going to be screaming with a sea of 16 year old kids and I. Can’t. Wait! There is no shame in my game. Here’s a pic from the last time I saw them… and my post about that night! For the first time, I won’t be going by myself. The bf has NO idea what he’s getting himself into. He owes me. I took him to see Atmosphere for his b-day!

This Kakuzai notepad is adorable! At $25 and with 1,200 sheets, it would make a great x-mas gift! OMG why am I already thinking about Christmas!?!?! I’ve been stalking this notepad waiting for some update on where to buy it in the US, since the original source was in Japanese and someone finally let everyone know where to get one here! M A P of the most exquisite places where to shop for or just enjoy fine modern or mid-century furniture in the city of Seattle, WA.

Most of these stores carry classics like: Eames, Bertoia, Saarinen, Aalto, Nelson, Noguchi or Florence Knoll and new modern pieces by the likes of Bensen, Didier Gomez or Patricia Urquiola, just to mention a few.

It is a must to visit stores like Egbert’s to enjoy a showroom that combines classic, timeless Mid-Century pieces with more exotic accessories with a tribal flair. It is a very pleasant combination that makes a home feel home.

Other stores to go to are Velocity Art and Design and of course the more established chains like Inform Interiors, Ligne Roset, Current or Diva.

A few more places to shop in Seattle:

Chartreuse International (2609 1st Ave, Seattle, WA 98121)
A mix of new and used furniture and accessories (Vitra, Alessi, Marimekko). Good place for accessories but for furniture its hit and miss.

Area 51 (401 E Pine St, Seattle, WA 98122)
New furniture. Reproductions of classics and mid-century modern inspired contemporary pieces. Prices are good but without getting into an authorized versus non-authorized reproduction debate the quality does not compare to what you will find at the stores called out above (Inform, Ligne Roset, Diva etc.) that carry either thier own lines or Herman Miller, Knoll etc.. Dwell bedding.

TUULI of Finland (1407 1st Ave, Seattle WA, 98101)
Products from Finland. Even though the only thing mid-century here are the Marimekko fabrics I really like the store. The owner (I assume) is really great and will not only sell you the fabric but will frame it for you for a reasonable rate if you are intereseted in mid-century fabric wall hangings.

DWR (Seattle and Kirkland)
Shouldn’t need any further description. Anyway unless you are buying one of the small number of pieces exlusive to DWR you are better off shopping online at highbrowfurniture.com (no tax or shipping) or Inform were you will get a lot more color and fabric choices and help sifting through them. Historically DWR has gouged on delivery/shipping charges and thier is no pick up option (shiping prices are getting a little bit better). The Seattle showroom is bigger but I’ve found the Kirkland staff friendlier and more knowledgeable.

Alchemy Collections (2029 Second Ave, Seattle, WA 98121)
Reproductions and furniture ‘inspired by’ modern classics made in China I think as the rest of the store has an Asian modern feel. Mostly reproductions of the classics but also surprisingly some knock offs of contemporary pieces (B&B Italia for example). Quality of reproductions seemed really low to me. The pieces that I didn’t recognized seemed better quality. I think they have opened up another store on Western Ave just down from Inform. I’d recommend Area 51 or Velocity art and Design over Alchemy in terms of quality reproductions.

Urchin (1922 1st Ave, Seattle, WA)
Mostly modern accessories but also a small amount of furniture and clothing. Call it a euro-’boutique’ of modernism. Cute little store but selection is very limited.

Retrofit Home (1419 12th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122)
Another mostly accessories store although they have some furniture (Blu Dot and the like). Has more of a pop 60s feel. I prefer “Velocity Art and Design” and Chartreuse.

Collective (5323 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107)
Vintage (used) mid century furniture. You generally won’t find the iconic Herman Miller and Knoll pieces here but what you will find is unique, well above average in terms of design quality, and in very good to excellent condition. You will also pay top dollar for it. In their defence if you’ve tried hunting down interesting vintage pieces at garage sales, goodwill, etc. you’ll know how time consuming it can be. If time is money its probably cheaper to have the folks at Collective hunt it down for you. If Collective’s prices make you choke the next easiest alternative is craigslist.

Antika (8421 Greenwood Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98103)
Antique store with a Danish modern room in the back. I’ve been here a couple of times but haven’t been impressed with the stock. Prices and condition are reasonable but none of the pieces stood out as representing exceptional design. It’s Danish modern but you won’t find Wegner, Fritz Hansen, Jacobsen, Ib Kofod Larsen, etc. here.

Crate and Barrel (University District and Bellevue)
Might not come to mind for mid-century or modernism but quality is light light years beyond Ikea (or Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware etc.). Prices are reasonable for the quality. They have a mid-century inspired furniture line, re-issues of Eva Zeisal dinnerware, etc.. I prefer the architetcure at the University district store otherwise they are the same.

Tottini (259 Yale Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98109)
Modern furniture, accesories, and toys for kids. Build that inspiring environment for your ‘future architect’. Just down the street from Velocity Art and Design so take one trip and check them both out.

Artemide (310 Occidental Ave S, Seattle, WA)
Full line of Artemide lighting located in the pioneer square area. Love the products but they’re not cheap. There is a another very cool lighting store on Western near Inform which I like to but can’t remember the name of (either Highlights or Lightform).

I do, however, have a trusty IKEA Ektorp three-seater, which started life as Blekkinge White but these days is more, well, Blekkinge Grey – and not in a good way. It’s been washed many times over the years – after the famous Lasagne Incident of 2005, following the notorious Kitten Accident of 2008, and more recently, in the aftermath of the Red Wine Catastrophe of 2009. It’s time for a change. These Marimekko covers might just be the answer…

It’s hard to choose, but my fave classic here has got to be the Fandango print, which comes in a light grey and a hot pink. Gorgeous! – Ellie

Sent to me by my lovely and much-missed Faroese friend Ronja, this bracelet is amazingly beautiful and I adore it. It’s from somewhere in either the Faroe Islands or Denmark – I don’t know, and if anybody knows what BNH stands for, please let me know.

It came in a black box engraved with Smykkur og Ur (that’s jewellery and watches in Faroese) and wrapped in Marimekko fabric (google image that if you haven’t heard of it – it’s a vintage enthusiast’s heaven, wonderful ‘60s inspired Finnish prints).

Anyway, the bracelet is gorgeous and I love it, and I wear it as much as I can trust myself not to break and lose it.
