The quadriceps femoris (Latin for “four-headed [muscle] of the femur”), also called simply the quadriceps, quadriceps extensor,quads, is a large muscle group that includes the four prevailing muscles on the front of the thigh. When you work your leg muscles you burn the most calories, fat and energy leading to a stronger base and an amplified strength. Your legs not only consist of the quad muscles but also the calves, thighs, gluteus and hip muscles. They all account for your foundation which the rest of your body relies upon.

The Workout:

1.Assited Squats (one hand on wall for stabilization): 3 sets of 10 reps – 6 minutes

Stretch (muscles should be stretched with blood flow present): hamstrings, calves, quads

2. One-leg stair lunge (Skip every other stair while lunging into a deep stretch): 2 sets of 10 reps – 8 minutes

3. Calf Raise: Put your toes on the edge of a stair and thrust up on our tip toes, the lower to a stretch: 3 sets of 15 reps – 10 minutes

4. Wall Squats: place yourself in a sitting position up against a wall and hold yourself there for 30 seconds. do this 2 times – 5 minutes

More than 70 members of the Marin County community gathered in November to learn about Aim High’s plan to expand the summer program to serve high-need youth in Marin.

Hosted by Patrick and Marney Tenney, the event formally introduced Aim High’s Campaign for Marin, which aims to raise $250,000 in gifts and multi-pledges by March 1st to support the launch of an Aim High site in Marin in 2010.

Vince Matthews, a former Aim High teacher and Mt. Tam High School administrator who now serves as State Administrator for Oakland Unified School District, spoke of the impact of programs like Aim High on troubled districts and low-performing students. “Without question,” Matthews said, “Aim High is doing what we would like to do throughout the entire system.”

Guests also heard powerful stories from Aim High graduate and UC Berkeley graduate student Rita Molestina, as well as Aim High parent Natalie Thomas, who attributes her daughters’ pursuit of a top-tier high school to Aim High’s spirit of community and opportunity.

Robert Hurwitt interviews Peter Nachtrieb in today’s SF Chronicle. Peter is not only a fantastic writer and a super-nice guy, but he’s one of the few playwrights in the country, let alone the Bay Area, actually making a living as a playwright:

With “Boom” now a national success, and “T.I.C.,” which premiered here with Encore Theater in January, getting some interest in New York, Nachtrieb is turning his attention to two new commissions, for Orange County’s South Coast Rep and American Conservatory Theater’s master’s of fine arts program. He is, in other words, making his living as a full-time playwright.

“It’s coming up on three years,” he says. “Hopefully, I can make it last. At this point it’s like, ‘Oh, I’m good through May or June,’ but I hope I can keep pushing that termination date farther out. I’m committed to being a Bay Area-based playwright. Living here definitely colors everything I write.”

Today’s Marin Independent Journal has an interview by Sam Hurwitt with Peter Nachtrieb, whose play boom is finally playing in the Bay Area — as well as at 13 other theaters around the country:

Q: What’s it like seeing so many interpretations of the play?

A: It’s pretty wild. It had a workshop production at Brown in 2007, then I had a quick turnaround to its world premiere at Ars Nova. Last fall I got to go to two productions, one at Wooly Mammoth — and I felt I finished the play there — then the following week in Seattle. All of those productions were very different. Getting a chance to hear it with different audiences, different casts and different directors was really helpful for me to see what was working consistently and where were the bumps. If I made any changes now I think it wouldn’t make the play any better.

Am accentuat acel Banica, tocmai pentru ca cea din urma este sotia celebrului Stefan Banica Jr. Iar prima este o fosta sotie a celebrului cantaret – daca nu ma insel.
Eh, oricum este o poveste mai complicata si nu prea-mi place sa ma bag in viata vedetelor media de pe la noi.
Dupa cum ziceam, astazi – Mihaela Radulescu – si-a lansat cea de-a doua carte. Eu sincer nu am auzit de prima carte pe care a scris-o. Culmea este ca din cate am inteles, si cealalta diva – Andreea Marin – isi lanseaza cartea tot astazi. Ca sa vezi ironie a sortii.

Ieri cel care prezinta matinalul la Radio ZU – nu-i spun numele pentru a nu face confuziune si pentru a nu fi acuzat de asta… pentru ca nu le stiu chiar pe toate – a lansat o aroganta. Ascultatorul care are curaj sa se duca la Mihaela Radulescu sa ia un autograf pe cartea scrisa de Andreea Marin sau invers, va primi o suma cuprinsa intre 200-500€ pentru asta. Acum intrebarea mea este daca divele vor accepta sa semneze cartea “concurentei” avand in vedere presiunile care exista intre ele, mai mult sau mai putin vizibile.
Ceea ce m-a frapat a fost ca doamna Mihaela Radulescu si-a lansat cartea, sau mai bine spus si-a promovat-o si-n emisiunea “‘neata cu Razvan si Dani” de la Antena 1, avand in vedere relatia dintre cei doi (nu dintre Razvan si Dani ci dintre Raduleasca si Dani Otil) si tinand cont de faptul ca Mihaela inca se mai vede cu fostul sot, sau actual – ca nici eu nu mai stiu – domnul Elan, mare om de afaceri. O inteleg! Probabil face asta pentru copilul ei, pentru ca stie ca i-ar fi mult mai bine alaturi de un om influent precum domnul Elan Schwartzenberg. Recent vazusem intr-o revista de scandal poze q Mihaela si Dani tinandu-se de mana in timp ce se indreptau spre apartamentul tanarului – si virilului (presupun, conform zvonurilor) – Dani.

To All Interested Parties:

The Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the North Coast Railroad Authority Project (SCH 2007072052) has been issued for public comments. Since the March 9, 2009 DEIR was circulated, new information that is considered significant has been made available. In accordance with CEQA 15088.5, the March 9, 2009 DEIR is being revised and recirculated to provide the public with the opportunity to comment on the revisions. Because the new information affected numerous sections throughout the document, the entire DEIR is being recirculated.

Previous comments on the March 9, 2009 DEIR will still be considered part of the public record, but written responses to these comments will not be included in the final EIR. The public is therefore advised to submit new comments on the revised DEIR.

The following provides a summary of the primary areas where the March 9, 2009 DEIR was revised:
• Since the March 9, 2009 DEIR was circulated, the NCRA Board approved its final Trail Guidelines. These guidelines are significantly different than the draft Northwestern Pacific Railroad Company (NWP Co.) Trail Guidelines that were used in the March 9, 2009 Public Safety analysis. The final NCRA Trail Guidelines are available on the NCRA web page.
• The March 9, 2009 DEIR identified BMPs as mitigation measures, but did not include a copy of them in the document. It was originally felt that since the agencies would be reviewing the BMPs prior to operations, it was not critical that they be included in the DEIR. NCRA has finalized its BMPs and these are now included in Appendix A of the revised DEIR.
• NCRA’s current operator is NWP Co.; however, since it is feasible that a different operator could at some point operate on the rail line, the revised DEIR includes or references NCRA’s plans and procedures instead of NWP Co. specific plans and procedures. It is understood that any operator will be required to follow NCRA’s plans and procedures.
• Detailed discussion was included in the cumulative section regarding the operating agreement between NCRA and SMART. Many of these details are still being discussed; therefore, they have been removed from the cumulative section. The combined operations of the passenger and freight trains will be in compliance with FRA safety regulations.
• The NCRA Rehabilitation of the rail line from Lombard to Windsor was included as a cumulative project.

This document represents the revised DEIR which is currently being recirculated for public review and comment.
Publication of this DEIR marks the beginning of a 45-day public review period, during which written comments may be submitted to the NCRA at the following address:

Saturday I took my very first workshop through the Aperture Academy.  My only regret is that I wish I had taken this workshop  a year or two ago when I was at a loss at how to shoot with manual settings and confused about aperture, shutter speed, and ISO… But now these things I know and have been practicing for quite a while. That, however, boosted my confidence as I tend to underestimate myself .  The whole day though was an absolute blast and I appreciated the great feedback from the instructors on my compositions as well as help in using GND filters.  It was also a neat opportunity to shoot with pros and  visit locaitons I have never shot at. I would love to take another workshop!

LIVING IN THE MOMENT | Jeremiah Masoli’s resiliency has the Ducks flying high once again

He suddenly found himself in the middle of it all as many in the record crowd poured onto the field, surrounding Oregon’s star quarterback after the historic victory.

Two fans then grabbed Jeremiah Masoli and hoisted him in the air, high above the crowd, right toward the top of the college football universe.

“It was fun. It was a once-in-a lifetime-type thing,” Masoli said of the wild celebration after the Ducks’ 47-20 victory over USC. “I was just embracing the moment. It was great.”

The scene was a stark contrast to another moment, more than four years ago, that he also will probably never forget.

It was Aug. 24, 2005 — Masoli’s 17th birthday — and he was alone, locked inside the Hillcrest Juvenile Hall in San Mateo, Calif., serving out a three-month sentence for his role in several strong-armed robberies.

His future, and his faith, were in doubt. Football, he figured, might be over.

The Ducks trailed by one point when Masoli and the Oregon offense took the field with 2:18 left in the game.

Masoli’s first pass attempt fell awkwardly at the feet of his receiver. Boos rained down from the Autzen Stadium stands, and the quarterback once again seemed as if he might be down for good.

But there he was a minute later, on third down, scrambling 25 yards to the Stanford 8-yard line. Three plays later, LeGarrette Blount scored the game-winning touchdown with six seconds left.

Starting with that 35-28 victory over Stanford on Nov. 8, 2008, the Ducks are 11-1, including last Saturday’s victory over USC that put the Ducks in prime position for their first Rose Bowl berth since 1994.

Oregon (7-1, 5-0 Pac-10) rose to No. 7 in the Associated Press rankings this week, No. 8 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings.

Similarly, after totaling nearly 400 yards of offense against the Trojans, Masoli is back in the Heisman Trophy discussion and drawing rave reviews from coaches and teammates.

Oregon’s first game of this final stretch run is Saturday at Stanford, marking a return home for Masoli, who grew up in the Bay Area and later starred at the City College of San Francisco.

From there, in a well-documented rise, he came to Oregon as the fifth quarterback before, in a matter of weeks, taking over as the starter.

This season he’s had to overcome questions about his ability to lead the team and a knee injury some thought was serious enough to end his season.

But before all that, he had to overcome something much greater.

Masoli is unwilling to discuss the details of his guilty plea for the robberies in and around San Mateo, Calif., in 2005, which resulted in his expulsion from Serra High and a stint in the juvenile detention center.

But, speaking in general terms, Masoli acknowledged the significance of his experience in the detention center.

“I definitely grew up quickly,” he said. “Once you go inside, you definitely have to grow up quickly.”

Juvenile court records are closed, but media accounts and a source close to the school confirmed that Masoli was one of several Serra football players arrested in June 2005, and subsequently expelled, for targeting individuals at San Mateo’s Hillsdale Mall and isolated bus stops in the area, muscling them for money.

A respected student and a team captain, Masoli pleaded guilty to robbery, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

Citing California student-privacy laws, Serra football coach Patrick Walsh wouldn’t discuss specifics about Masoli’s involvement with the crimes but did say it had a tremendous effect on the school and the football team.

“Very shocking,” said Walsh, now in his ninth season as the coach at the private, all-boys Catholic school. “It was very difficult on all of us. He was an all-league quarterback, and he just got caught up in something he shouldn’t have.”

Masoli said his family and his faith helped him get through.

“It’s one of those things I was taught when I was little, just to persevere no matter what,” he said. “You just gotta lean on God. That’s really what I was brought up on. Everybody has their bad days, bad weeks, whatever. I just feel like I’m such a strong person because of the people who raised me that I could get through anything.”

He admitted, though, that there were moments his faith waned, moments when he wasn’t sure if he’d be given another chance to play football.

“It’s always tough. There’s temptation everywhere,” he said. “I’m just like any other person on the street.

“It is what it is,” he added. “It’s life, and that’s what happened. And now I’m here and doing this.”

Masoli was named the national offensive player of the week by Walter Camp Football Foundation after the win over USC. He threw for 222 yards, rushed for 164 more and accounted for two touchdowns, and the Ducks amassed 613 yards of total offense.

The criticism he endured at the beginning of the season, and the knee injury he suffered a few weeks earlier, seemed as if they’d happened ages ago as Masoli darted around the field freely.

“We know we’re capable of those kinds of things,” Masoli said. “For it to happen against ’SC was just amazing.”

This week, a handful of prominent Web sites with watch lists for the Heisman now include the 5-foot-11, 220-pound junior quarterback.

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, who was in Eugene as a host of College GameDay and to broadcast the game, went so far this week to rank Masoli in his top three for the Heisman.

Not that Masoli is paying much attention to his national profile.

“You see it, and you definitely acknowledge it,” he said. “But it’s one of those things (that) you can look at after the season. I mean, you can definitely have patience to wait on it because those are the types of things that get your head big, and we don’t really want that here.”

Keeping a peripheral watch of his former quarterback, Walsh said he’s proud that Masoli has remade himself, and isn’t surprised by his success, or his toughness to come back from the knee injury.

Walsh recalled that in Masoli’s last game of his junior season at Serra, the quarterback broke his left collarbone in the first quarter of a playoff game, but he continued to play, leading the team on a “miraculous” drive for the tying touchdown in the final two minutes, forcing overtime.

“He must’ve been just cringing inside,” said Walsh, who didn’t realize the extent of Masoli’s injury. “I felt horrible. You just don’t play a kid with a broken collarbone. But that just shows the sacrifices he’s willing to make for his team.”

Oregon defensive tackle Simi Toeaina, Masoli’s cousin, attended high school in American Samoa, but he had heard about Masoli’s ascent as the quarterback at Serra High and, then, his sudden dive into crime.

Toeaina, who lives with Masoli now, has also witnessed firsthand how Masoli has rebuilt himself with the Ducks.

“Jeremiah’s story is just amazing,” Toeaina said. “Just from how far he came, the world he came from, it’s just amazing that somebody could get through something like that. At the same time, once he got here, he’s made the most of it.

“The things that happened before definitely have an effect on him now,” he added. “He’s learned how to deal with certain situations and get through adversity.”

UO athletic director Mike Bellotti, the former head coach, said he was aware of Masoli’s past when the Ducks were recruiting him.

“I delved into that,” Bellotti said. “I confronted him immediately about that, and he was fine.

“We have a lot of kids (with a similar history), based on who they hung out with in high school, the kind of crowd they ran with or the environment they were in,” Bellotti added. “And luckily for him in some regards, he removed himself — or his family removed him — from that environment, and it paid dividends.”

Masoli moved with his father to Hawaii and attended St. Louis High in Honolulu, where he was the backup quarterback. (If dismissed from a California school, students are banned from competing in sports at any California school for one year.)

After graduating, he moved back to the Bay Area and attended City College of San Francisco, grayshirting in 2006.

Upon his return to the field, in his first significant role in three years, he shined in 2007, leading the Rams to an undefeated season and a national championship.

“He competed every day, worked hard every day, did everything the way you would want someone to do it,” CCSF coach George Rush said. “Everybody deserves a second chance. … Do you vilify him, or give him a chance to redeem himself? The purpose of our college is to give guys an opportunity, that’s what’s great about the Jeremiah Masoli story — he grabbed the opportunity and didn’t let it go.”

When he first arrived at Oregon, Masoli only acknowledged “getting into a little trouble” in high school.

“No comment,” he said last year, when asked to elaborate. “It was something in my past that helped me be who I am today.”

Still, it’s a comeback story worth telling, and Masoli said he hopes to do so, in some way, by speaking at the John Serbu Youth Campus, a juvenile detention facility across the street from the stadium.

It was at that same facility that Blount, the Ducks’ suspended senior running back, and a dozen other Ducks spoke to a group of troubled teenagers last month.

In the meantime, Masoli this weekend will head back to the Bay Area for a game to be played less than 20 miles from San Mateo. In a way, it’s a chance for him to come full circle.

With a dream of playing in the NFL, he believes he hasn’t quite completed the comeback.

“We gotta half a circle to go still,” he said, smiling. “We’re not done with the circle. … I got too many people anxious to see what I do in the future.”

Todos estaban bien pero pronto se dieron cuenta de que GUS parecía tener dificultades de visión . Mientras sus hermanos iban encontrando un hogar GUS tuvo que ser separado y llevado a operar de cataratas a Lugo.

Después estuvo 1 mes entero a tratamiento y ahora que todo eso ha pasado GUS quiere por fin dejar las tristezas atrás y empezar a disfrutar de la vida como debe disfrutar un cachorro, y tener la misma suerte que tuvieron sus hermanos. GUS no quiere quedarse nunca más atrás.

GUS ya ve perfectamente del ojo operado, aunque del otro ojo sólo ve sombras. Nada de eso le impedirá llevar una vida normal, y para él no supone ningún impedimento para colmar de felicidad a la persona que se fije en él.

GUS tiene 3 meses, será de tamaño mediano-grande, es todo corazón, noble, tranquilo, se relaciona perfectamente con otros perros, con niños, es muy cariñoso y así de guapo.

Dans la trilogie Marseillaise de Marcel Pagnol qui compte trois volets, les deux premiers MARIUS et FANNY furent préalablement conçus pour le théâtre et ensuite adaptés au cinéma, quand au dernier volet CESAR c’est l’inverse qui s’est produit.

Marcel Pagnol achève MARIUS en 1928. C’est en mars 1929 que la pièce est jouée et qu’elle remporte un vif succès. Le film quant à lui sort en octobre 1931.
Ambiance vieux port à Marseille, cannebière et l’accent du midi, Marius est un jeune homme déchiré entre deux amours, celui qu’il porte à Fanny la petite marchande de coquillage, et celui de la mer. Marius et Fanny vivront leur amour et par amour également c’est Fanny elle-même qui poussera Marius à prendre la mer…

Amour et tentation sont les mots clés de cette première partie.

La seconde partie FANNY sera jouée au théâtre en décembre 1931 et le film sortira en octobre 1932.
Deux mois passent après le départ de Marius, et Fanny s’aperçoit qu’elle est enceinte. Sa mère Honorine, pour sauver l’honneur de sa fille, arrange donc le mariage d’avec Monsieur PANISSE, riche veuf très gentil qui accepte avec bonheur l’état de Fanny. Le bébé tout juste né, Marius revient guéri de sa folie navigante, et pense reprendre Fanny et son fils Césariot. Hélas tous s’y opposent et Marius renonce.

Amour toujours, mais réalité reconnaissance et honneur toujours sont présents dans ce second volet.

Le dernier chapitre, CESAR, produit directement pour cinéma par l’auteur lui même sortira le 11 novembre 1936. Dix ans plus tard la pièce sera à son tour jouée au théâtre.
CESARIOT apprend après la mort de Panisse que son père biologique est donc Marius qu’on lui décrit comme un voyou. Afin de se faire à sa propre idée il décide de le rencontrer incognito. CESARIOT découvre en Marius un homme doux sensible et rêveur. Finalement à la suite d’une poignante explication CESARIOT comprend que ses parents lui ont sacrifié leur amour et que celui-ci est toujours présent vingt ans après, il consentira à ce que Marius et Fanny se retrouvent.

Comme on commence une histoire par il était une fois, pour la fin de cette trilogie on peut dire tout est bien qui finit bien !…

A good example of that kind of dedication is Mike Kellogg, retired social science teacher at Eureka High School. A man of many talents, he has given most of his 1,150 reported volunteer hours this past year for the Timber Heritage Association.

Drivers crossing the Wichels Causeway on and off Mare Island on Wednesday were privy to a recent rarity on the island: A train chugging across, whistle blowing.

Wednesday marked the first installment of Mare Island newcomer business Alstom’s plans to refurbish 66 Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains. The initial three passenger cars to grace newly aligned track leading into Alstom’s Building 599 warehouse were towed by Alstom venture partner, San Francisco Bay Railroad.

I’m pretty sure it was a horn, not a whistle blowing. Thanks to Shawn for providing this one.

NVR: Devlin extension gets rolling

For the next several weeks, trucks will build a section of a bridge over railroad tracks north of Green Island Road, using soil from a hill near Napa County Airport.
