Don’t stop me

‘Cause I’m having a good time having a good time
I’m a shooting star leaping through the sky
Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity
I’m a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva
I’m gonna go go go
There’s no stopping me

New Super Mario Bros. Wii Review
Written By Stephen Heller

In 1985 a game launched on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), a game that would create a legacy and change gaming forever. It was simple, yet challenging and most of all, fun. You controlled the character Mario through a series of levels plagued with mushrooms, flying turtles and some hectic platforming. Since that game Mario has been in a number of adventures, most recent have been in the 3D realm. What New Super Mario Bros. Wii does is amazing, it takes the formula of that very first Mario adventure, brings in ideas from all of his subsequent quests, and adds in enough new to make this formula not only reek of nostalgia, but feel fresh at the same time. The question is, will this game reach out to a new generation of Mario gamers, or does it only appeal to those veterans who are drawn in by the nostalgia factor? Let’s find out…

New Super Mario Bros (NSMB) is a return to a 2D platform as we run and jump our ways from the start of a level to the flag, taking out a multitude of familiar foes out along the way with a few new surprises to keep the player on their toes. It’s the simplicity of the goal, get from point A to point B that makes this game instantly accessible to any player, it’s objective is so simple that Grandma could sit down and have an idea of how to complete the objective. Accessible doesn’t mean easy, NSMB does it’s best to keep you challenged, right to the end of its 8 worlds.

Due to the games difficulty, and more notably, to keep a level playing field for those new to the series, Nintendo have hatched a new idea called the “Super Guide”. If you have died eight times on a level, next time you load it up a Green “!” box will appear. Hit this box and you will be able to watch Luigi strut his stuff through the level, effectively showing you how to complete the part you keep dying on. It’s a great feature for those who are new to the series, but veterans will most likely steer clear from it all together. It’s not forced upon the player, which means it’s your own choice to use it.

Where NSMB truly shines is the intergration of multiplayer which has the potential to cause friendships to end, family quarrels and bring out your inner jerk in the best kind of way. Each player controls a character as you make your way through the main game, either helping each other out, or competing for overall supremacy. There are sections where co-operation is paramount, utilizing features such as the grab and lift mechanic, effectively lifting a fellow player onto your shoulders, and the ability to throw them towards that hard to reach power-up, or a lava pit to teach them a lesson, whichever may apply to the situation. There is no better feeling than having a friend betray you, only for you to get a lucky wall jump to save yourself and you get a chance to exact revenge. This is some of the best fun you’ll have on your Wii, period.

The four characters on offer are Mario, Luigi or Toad (blue or yellow) which is a little disappointing. All four characters have the same abilities, yet it can be confusing if both toads grab an invincibility star as they flash the same multicolored pattern. Overall the dynamic works well. If one player dies they re-appear in a floating bubble and will re-join the game when another player tags them in. If all four players manage to die at the same time, sorry lads but you’ll need to restart the level. It’s a great way to bring tensions up, especially in those ultra-hard stages and you all have hardly any lives left.

For those of you who are veterans to the 1985 classic you should feel right at home when it comes to the control scheme of NSMB. Holding the Wii remote sideways and using the 1, 2 and D-Pad for the majority of the gameplay mechanics, with a few waggle motions to make it fill the Wii game obligations. A small shake of the remote will have your character pull of a spin-jump, which is handy when equipped with a Flower power-up as it will shoot out in opposite directions, potentially protecting you from incoming foes. The other motion control is a simple tilt action, used to swing platforms and tilt cannons used within the game. They integrate into the gameplay well and don’t cause any issues.

I’m sure many gamers reading this could attest that level design in each Mario adventure has been paramount to the series success. NSMB is no exception, featuring eight worlds bursting with creativity. Each level is carefully plotted, and later levels will have you studying the environment to work out a safe passage to the end goal. It can be a split second gap that will save your life, and while you may go red in the face and clench that controller just a little too tight until you get it, the feeling of completion is a reward unto itself.

For those completionists out there NSMB features plenty of side challenges to keep you busy. Red Coins and Star coins need to be collected, Kidnapped Toads need to be saved and carried safely to the goal in some levels, and a bunch of cannons can be unlocked to shoot you to new worlds. You will be playing each level over and over again to collect everything, which is exactly what you are looking for in a Mario title.

With the addition of the already hectic four player multiplayer comes new game modes. Foot Race breathes destruction as you race across open levels, free from the time constraints of the normal game. Coin Battles pit players against each other on one screen with a series of enemies. The player with the most coins at the end wins.

This is where Nintendo should have capitalised on the potential for rivalries, whether it be the implementation of leaderboards online, or even just a ladder that stays on the home console. Once the game has ended and you want to tell your friends about your epic win, there is no proof on the console. Such a simple concept could increase the longevity of these gameplay modes, yet it is yet another opportunity missed by the developers.

Going back to the games roots, the graphics are a fantastic blend of 3D Characters, retro sprites, scrolling backgrounds creating a feeling of Super Mario World that was released on the SNES with some 3D character modeling. It very rarely departs from this presentation model, and it’s a good thing it doesn’t as the 2D playing field really makes this game feel fresh.

The soundtrack for NSMB is a perfect mix of old school and re-vamped tunes, bringing in waves of nostalgia as you hum along to familiar tunes from your childhood. The sound effects are back, with power-ups and such chiming through the Wii remote speaker which is a nice touch.

The Final Verdict

Is New Super Mario Bros. Wii the greatest Mario title to date? That’s a decision you need to make for yourself, but the fact that it’s debatable is a true testament to just how good this new addition is. Bringing in the best of series, going back to the original form as a 2D platformer, and throwing in four player mayhem brings Mario and his adventures to a whole new level. The most important ingredient is fun, and no matter who you are, you will undoubtedly have a bunch of fun with this title. Nintendo have just proven again that they are the masters of creating a game to suit a large age group.

GAMEPLAY: 9.5/10: Not much could be improved, but at times tighter controls would make things easier.

GRAPHICS: 9.8/10: The game looks gorgeous and is a perfect fit for the game.
AUDIO: 9.5/10: A perfect mix of re-vamped tunes with new twists and great sound effects

VALUE: 9.0/10: Completionists will be busy for a long time, but would have been nice to have some online
features or some sort of scoreboard for competitive play.

OVERALL: 9.7/10

Every game tells a story. There are dozens of ways that video games have told stories over the years

Every game tells a story. There are dozens of ways that video games have told stories over the years, and although many games seem to stick to a familiar formula, there is no governing rule of how the story needs to be told. Today, I won’t discuss what makes a game’s story good or bad, but rather many of the different methods that games use to tell their story. Here are a small number of methods I’ve chosen to talk about in this post:

1st Person

Cinematic

Text-Only

No Words

1st Person Story

An explosion witnessed by the player in Half-Life 2

This method of storytelling puts the player directly into the role of the main character as they live his or her life. This method is most often utilized in the First Person Shooter genre, which comes as no surprise considering that the camera is acting as the player’s eyes (what the main character sees, the player sees.) This method has becoming increasingly more common with the growing number of FPS games, but isn’t exclusive to shooter games. What the 1st Person Story helps accomplish is creating an atmosphere where the player actually feels like a part of the story, immersing them into the world. The way of storytelling first emerged when Doom came out for the PC, but wasn’t really utilized until Half-Life years later. There was no narrative in these games, but the story was told through the characters and setting. A great way of progressing the plot without taking the player out of the game. This idea, and variations of this idea, are used all the time in modern day games, like Oblivion and Call of Duty 4. They aren’t without narrative most of the time, but their origins were.

Cinematic

As games matured from their early stages on 8, 16 and 32 bit platforms, a lot of new technologies became available. More space on discs allowed for more detailed sound (in the form of voice acting), and 3D environments and the use of a 3D camera allowed for film-like camera angles to be used. The first game to really use this style was Metal Gear Solid, which opened the floodgates to many more. This method of storytelling is comparable to watching a movie, and can be nearly identical at times. Anybody who has ever gotten engrossed in a film they really loved know what it’s like to play a game that uses cinematic storytelling. The most recent example of a game that uses cinematic cutscenes would be Uncharted 2, which could essentially be a Hollywood if stripped of gameplay.

Movie? Game? Both?

Text-Only

This style of storytelling made its debut around the time of the Nintendo Entertainment System. This method of explaining the plot came about when fonts were able to be utilized, and the obvious way of storytelling became to present the story like a book, with text. Many games used text in the opening of the game, and let the rest of the story play out solely in the gameplay, like Zelda. In these cases, the quality of the story relies almost entirely upon the quality of the writing. Of course, in games like Zelda a large portion of the story plays out in the imagination of the player, which is something I wish we would see more often. But just because this style is old, doesn’t mean it isn’t used anymore. Lost Winds, on WiiWare, explains the plot through text and setting, rather than voice. Braid, by Jonathan Blow, explains more and more of the plot through text as you complete sections of the game. This has the effect of feeling like a short novel; it motivates players to continue on through the next world of the game, just like a novel motivates the reader to continue on through the next chapter. This storytelling method can be very effective, but again, the writing must be compelling: It’s absolutely necessary.

No Words

Many moments can be explained without words

Before even fonts could be utilized in games, the only way to tell a story was through the gameplay. Space Invaders was about an alien invasion, Super Mario Bros was about saving a princess, and many games left everything up to the imagination. This style has fallen almost completely out of use, with very few games relying only on gameplay, graphics and music to explain the plot. Games like Super Mario Galaxy do a lot of the work without words, but they do come into play at times. The same thing goes for games like Shadow of the Colossus, where much of the game is just about atmosphere and gameplay, but I can’t think of any games with no dialog or narrative whatsoever, with an exception for puzzle games like Tetris. I sometimes think about how interesting it would be to see a game with no words at all. None. Could gameplay explain the story well enough without text? That’s the kind of thing I would want to be exploring if I had a little more time on my hands.

Well, that’s about all I want to get into today. There are more methods, although perhaps less obvious, or hybrids of other methods. Thinking about how you want to structure the story can drastically change how the game plays as well.

While Nintendo still manages to come out on top in terms of console sales with the Wii, the company

While Nintendo still manages to come out on top in terms of console sales with the Wii, the company is still suffering from low software sales for its unique system. And while the Nintendo DS is flourishing in all ways, Video Games Republic has some info as to why its big brother isn’t faring quite as well…

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has admitted that the much hyped Wii Music and Animal Crossing disappointed the company; saying they “did not fulfill our expectations.”

A lack of software sales for Ninty was recently attributed to a lack of big games but most recently Iwata was more specific, naming Wii Music and Animal Crossing as two that failed to live up to the hype.

“Wii Music and Animal Crossing did not fulfil our expectations and only sold through 2.65m and 3.38m copies respectively,” Iwata said at a Q&A.

“Should those two titles have become long-term selling software, we would not have faced a shortage of software titles in the former half of this year.

He also blamed not being able to launch Wii Sports Resort sooner and not being able to “make the software launched in the last holiday season have longer tails.”

The Nintendo boss however remains confident over the launch schedules of Wii Fit Plus and Super Mario Bros. Wii, which will be out this Christmas, which could make a second quarter release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 more likely.

Nintendo will also be banking on its Wii Vitality Sensor, which Iwata hopes will have a “large impact in society”.

If like me you’re a sucker for stupid little trinkets and gadgets then be prepared to fill your home with even more stuff, in this instance, branded by Nintendo. Hive Entertainment and Together Plus have signed a deal to distribute all kinds of Nintendo related goodies in the UK over the next 12 months MCV reports. The type of things we can expect will be mugs, key rings, stationary and even a chess set all drenched in either Mario or his chums from Mario Kart and Mario Galaxy.

Can we handle yet more Mario related merchandise seeing as our game shops are already full of t-shirts, wind up/remote control toys and cases? I don’t think you can ever have enough video game merchandise…my wife disagrees…

During the past week or so, the gaming community has been overwhelmed with a huge amount of news and

During the past week or so, the gaming community has been overwhelmed with a huge amount of news and media from the E3 Expo in Los Angles. Microsoft revealed their next leap in videogame control, Project Natal, and Sony got in on the act with their new Eye Toy. Nintendo on the other hand showed they were still catering for their ‘hardcore’ audience.

Nintendo kicked off their press conference with the announcement of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. During the day, images of Nintendo’s E3 Booth were leaked showing the games existence. It may have been that factor which made it a less exciting announcement to me. While I liked the concept of a co-op experience for a Mario Bros game, there were other issues that made it less exciting to hear about. Whilst I watched four Nintendo representatives on stage play the game, I watched on in disappointment. Visually, I thought it didn’t look too good and I thought it looked very similar to the DS New Super Mario Bros. I liked the style and I find it fits well with the game, but I’m sure it could have looked a bit better. The other disappointing factor of the game was that it won’t feature an online option. Personally, I really think it could have benefited from at least a 2 player online option. Overall I’m sure it will turn out to be a decent game.

Nintendo revealed a ton of other new Mario games during the conference. There was Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, which showed Mario and his brother adventuring throughout Bowser’s insides. A DSiWare exclusive, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini’s March Again! This looked fairly similar to the previous game. Then the announcement of Super Mario Galaxy 2 came. I loved the first game and it turned out to be one of my favourite games of all-time, but when Nintendo showed that a sequel was in development, I was left as little dissatisfied. While I’m sure it’s going to turn out fantastic, it was the fact that it wasn’t something fresh and it will be set throughout galaxy environments again. During the trailer Nintendo showed of the game, it revealed that Yoshi would now be in the game and I also noticed some small visual improvements. I was never a fan of Yoshi in previous Mario games, but adding him to Super Mario Galaxy 2 seems like a good idea, in my opinion. After watching Reggie talk about the game in an interview, I was also pleased to hear that it would be harder than the first game and it’s going to be aimed at the ‘core’ Mario audience.

Nintendo also showed more of Wii Sports Resort and the variety of games it has to offer. It actually turned out to be of my favourite parts of their press conference and I particularly liked it when they showed the Archery in action. The player holds the Wiimote (with Motion-Plus attached) in front of them and you then have to pull back the Nunchuck. The aiming looked very precise and I thought it worked really well. Reggie and co played a game of Basketball on stage too, but I wasn’t sure whether the Motion-Plus did anything to improve the precision.

The final big announcement came right at the end of the conference and it took me by surprise. A joint developed project, by Nintendo and Team Ninja, which was a new Metroid Game. When I first saw the trailer, I wasn’t sure what to think of it. It looked a lot different from Retro Studios First-Person Metroid’s. There was a lot more interaction with other characters and it featured some gorgeous looking cut scenes, something that was never in the Prime series. Personally, I think it’s a great improvement and it’s nice to see more action to it. The other noticeable shift in this game was a combination of viewpoints. Some parts were like a sidescroller and others were in a first-person viewpoint. I found it strange to see and I’m hoping it will work well. Other than that, there was the story aspect and it’s looking as if it going to be a much more story driven game. Apparently it will also be exploring more of Samus’s past, which I think will make the game a lot more interesting.

During the rest of E3, there were a few more games that looked excellent and were coming to Nintendo consoles. Ubisoft showed Red Steel 2 at their press conference and I thought it looked really good. I loved the visual style they have chosen to do the game in and using Motion-Plus during the sword fighting looks like it‘s going to work really well. It looks far better than the first game, which I personally thought was awful. There was also Scribblenauts, a game that I think looks incredible. The player has to solve each level, by grabbing a star. To do this the player can type anything into a keyboard on the bottom screen of the DS and it will pop up on the top screen. It can then be used to solve the puzzle. When I say anything, I mean literally, nearly anything works. It is amazing to see it in action and I really can’t wait for this one to be released. On the subject of DS game, Nintendo had The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Track playable to attendees and apparently there were huge lines to play it. I may have mentioned before, but personally, I was never that keen on Phantom Hourglass and although this one looks similar, I’m hoping I will enjoy it more.

In conclusion, I think Nintendo had a good presence at this years E3, but I feel it could have still been better. They definitely showed that they are still making games for all audiences, but I was let down by the fact that there was no sign of a new Starfox or F-Zero. I also thought the way they presented their conference was really dull in comparison to last years, despite having better games to show. Mostly, I would have just like to have seen something different, rather than seeing more Mario.

Since the early 1980’s Bowser, King of the Koopas, has shown an obsessive desire to kidnap Mar

Since the early 1980’s Bowser, King of the Koopas, has shown an obsessive desire to kidnap Mario’s girlfriend, Princess Peach. His ultimate goal is usually domination of the Mushroom Kingdom, but he simply can’t resist the allure of Peach’s golden tresses. I wonder if he’d rule the Mushroom Kingdom by now if he stopped bringing Mario in the equation by whisking away the poor plumber’s paramour (alliteration!).

But perhaps Bowser’s ultimate failure as a villain is due to his extremely lacksadaisical policy regarding mail that Peach is allowed to send Mario. In both of my favorite entries in the Mario franchise, Mario 3 and Mario Galaxy, the Princess seems to spend most of her time in captivity writing Mario letters and, apparently due to some major flaws in Bowser’s mail policy, attaching helpful items to those letters. I’m seriously not sure if I could’ve beat Mario 3 in my formative years if it wasn’t for the plentiful supply of P-Wings and Frog Suits Peach sent me.

Why doesn’t Bower have her mail checked and censored? I mean, he probably shouldn’t allow her to send mail at all, but seeing as he’s apparently feeling generous he should at least make sure the mail doesn’t contain helpful items Mario can use to beat him. He doesn’t even need to read the mail himself, just appoint his top turtle or whatever.

Years have passed since Mario 3. In Super Mario World and Mario 64 Bowser has apparently wizened up, as no letters come. But the dawn of the Wii brought us Mario Galaxy and Peach is back to letter writing while in captivity and this time each letter contains five 1-ups! What’s the deal Bowser? The lax security is only made worse by the fact that Bowser had apparently been doing a better job for two games but let laziness overcome him once again.

Frankly the whole thing has me questioning Bowser’s ability as a villain, but there’s really nobody better, Wario and Waluigi certainly aren’t going to get the job done. I guess I’ll have to keep waiting for that big Mario vs. Sephiroth game I’ve been hoping for.

Metroid Other M

Wii vitality Sensor

WTF, Go N Go, quizá mi papá se interece porque es paramédico, mmm… no, a el tampoco le interesa.

Alejándonos de nintendo.

Modern Warfare 2

Hell!!!

Metal Gear Solid Rising

PSP Go

Nintendos E3 Conference courtesy of Gamespot Firstly what is with the woman at the start??? She remi

Nintendos E3 Conference courtesy of Gamespot

Firstly what is with the woman at the start??? She reminds me of a high school teacher which has all the inspiration but theres just something missing which makes you believe she trying to hard. Could she be less enthusiastic? Now onto the new Super Mario game, all I can say is WTF??? Its pretty much the same DS game but shat out onto the Wii with a multiplayer function. This woman is starting to annoy me, she seems like some congresswoman, she isnt representing Nintendo with the fun and charisma which comes along with it. Instead just drivvling on useless pieces of information which the consumer probably doesnt give a crap about.

Nintendo seem to be hell bent on creating new innovations all the time with their wavy remote and the stupid wii fit. So now to add to that they have released Wii Fit Plus… another push to try and get more money out a gimmick which to be honest is starting to wear very thin. I dont own a Wii, the times I have played one I found fun for a few minutes. All over the internet there are countless users who think that their Wii is good at collecting dust once Metroid/Mario and Zelda has been completed. Before when the Wii was first release they seemed to have a young fun image where they knew there demographic but now it seems they are just a bit cunfused. ‘Games’ like the Wii Fit surely arent aimed at children and yet almost every game on there is aimed at kids, and we are talking kids not teenagers…kids (apart from resident evil…obviously).

Just to point on now that Microsoft have release their new innovation Project Natal, the interactivity with Natal is far superior to that of the Wii (ironically holding a remote is the difference.) It strikes me as odd that Nintendo have had this area sorted for the past few years and yet they are still stuck on using the Wii remote.

FFS!!! are you shitting me… archery? Are we stuck in the medival times? Who plays archery? and whats with the sky diving thing? Are users really going to want to sky dive? Fairly sure the real thing might be a tad better… The guy presenting is soo false aswell. He needs a good slap and a reality check, why does he feel the need to explain how to shoot a basketball hoop? Wii Sports Resort looks arse. And now Virtua Tennis 2009, you know what that means?!?! another game in the bargain bin within a month of its release.

It strikes me as though throughout the presentation the presenters are destined to ell everyone about their financial reports every 5 minutes. Final Fantasy looks cool. But guess what??? another crappy Mario game which has got something to do with Bowsers insides, I wasnt really paying any attention, it just looks arse. Also heres a Mario fact for you while I remember… Did you know that Mario was given a mustache and a cap so it was easier for the animators to reproduce him?

Cop: The recruit? That was piss poor, im sorry but Nintendo really hasnt done it for me. The entire presentation is just about number and figures and the same shit which they have released for the past 20 years turfed out and shat onto an ageing console. For gods sake does the consumer really need to know how much DSi consoles have been sold since its release? And that stupid animation tool which looks like a basic version of Paint. What the hell is that game creating thing??? Some stupid apple being biten is a game? I think not!

A vitality sensor??? i’m starting to lose the plot. What is the point? No doubt it’ll be at extra cost to the consumer and all it’ll do is tell you that how many beats per min your heart is beating after playing Paper Mario haha what a load of tosh! And then to add to the seeminly neverending Mario releases there is another, this time in 3D (the second as Cammie keeps on telling us), not sure if they mentioned the title although it looks like Mario Galaxy.

“How can mankind fight a war which has already been won?” – The Conduit… that doesnt make sense, I know its a game but at least make sense. Sounds like the guy that announces the blockbuster movies. Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles looks pretty good although it reminds of Resident Evil Nemesis where the cut scenes were beautiful but the gameplay wasnt so nice. Dead Space Extraction looks pretty good, and for the first time in the video I can hear a clap for a game that is being released…

Metroid other M looks pretty cool, I must say that is a title which seemingly looks to be getting better, maybe if it was released on another platform it’ll sell better.

“… this is inkeeping with the timeless mission on Nintendo, bringing you names which are so familiar but revitalised to make them new again” – Quote near the end which sums it all up, its seems lazy and dull. I wished I hadnt watched the video. Maybe now if you’ve read this post you wont have to now. I think I caught all the main points but feel free to discuss any ideas and thoughts…
