Here’s a quasi humanoid robot that is designed to be your workout trainer. He’ll show you the exercises, give you motivational and encouraging pep talks and even play games with you. We think the idea sounds good, but in execution, he flails his arms and randomly says creepy insincere sounding things like “I’m having  fun. I could play this game all day long. I’m having too much fun.” That’s just creepy.

[Mr. Nelson] got sick of walking all the way down the hall just to see if there was anyone in the bathroom. His solution was to build this massively overdone indicator light system. It uses a proximity sensor located in each bathroom to determine occupied status and has a fantastic industrial look.

We were amazed by these beautifully crafted brass machines. The one in this video is solar powered and seems to run pretty smoothly. Not bad for something that was all hand crafted from sheets of brass.

Be careful with this one folks. This video shows how to melt a beer bottle in your microwave. We’re not sure why you would want to, but we sure enjoyed watching it happen. Maybe that’s reason enough.

Make Mushroom Houses appear

If you see a level where a Toad is trapped go into the level and save him. The type of Mushroom House that appears will depend on the last digit of the time counter.

After you finish the final castle in World 8, you can save anywhere in the map. A Save option will appear where the Quick Save option used to be.

  Collect 99 lives at any point during the game. Upon returning to the map screen, Mario will not be wearing his hat. Lose a life, and Mario’s hat will return.

  When you beat the first level of the game, as well as beat a level while rescuing a captured toadstool (1-player only) the old 8-bit end level fanfare will play from the first Super Mario Bros.

  Every dancing flower will give you one coin if you Spin Jump (flick Wiimote upwards) from a Neutral position.

   

• Unlimited Mushroom Houses *new*

  Get five stars on your save file by beating the game, collecting all the star coins in worlds 1-8, all the star coins in world 9, finding all the exits from a level and using every mushroom house and cannon on the map and you’ll get a message saying everything has been cleared. Mushroom Houses will never go away, letting you max out your items.

I went on a flying visit to Guildford today to stare open-mouthed at the new Mario Game in real shops. It’s a big thing, releasing a new Mario title, but made even more important by its 2D homage to my personal favourite all time Nintendo classic; Mario World. I think the story goes something like this…

Somewhere in the South West, a young and longhaired gamer was buckling up in his friend Matt’s borrowed car to head for the dizzy heights of London to the long gone COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SHOW. 2 hours of motorway and some terrible metal tapes later, and we are paying our £8 to get in to what was then, the pinnacle of every gamers life; a big room full of stuff you can’t buy in shops. My target: A SNES with Mario World and F-Zero. Oh yes, I had saved up for some time for this bundle of wonderment. I was so committed to my purchase that I had rung ahead to book said package. I craned my neck as I fought through the crowds to the corner of the hall where I could see the name of the shop in important black and white text. I waited anxiously, recounting my huge wad of cash (thanks Mum) before finally catching the eye of the lady manning the stall. “You have a SNES pack for David Millard?” I ask  her nervously. Then, she produces the items, gloriously untouched and still in their packaging. This was a fundamental moment in my gaming history. But there is a point to this story. This story is about obsession and passion for something. Do you remember the last time you yearned for something with the moral abandon of a child waiting quietly in their bed on Christmas Eve, building that Lego Technic set in your head over and over until you lose conciousness?

These days, I look back on that SNES moment with huge fondness. The agonising search for Pilot wings and Final Fight. The overly long drive home. The painful journey to my bedroom, followed by the hugely exciting unboxing and cable fiddling. Then… Joy of joy… that Mario World intro screen. Bliss. Unmatched bliss.

So, I know when I am getting Mario Wii now and I have decided to try my best to dream about it, obsess over it and then hopefully, when I am given it, enjoy the intro screen with the same tummy rumbling joy I got from my first Mario purchase.

I wonder how many levels there are?…

Hier nur mal ein recht kurzer Artikel, da keine große Zeit ist und die Vorbereitung zum Podcast läuft. Wir stellen euch heute ein paar Themes zu New Super Mario Bros. Wiivor, denn die Musik ist mal wieder erste Sahne!

Aah, the random moment of collecting school awards. Last night was perhaps one I’ve been looking forward to in a while: a rather spontaneous GCSE awards ceremony. It was a bit late, but hey, so was my exam revision for the actual exams, so it acts as a friendly case of coincidence. Since it was a GCSE award ceremony, it meant I could come up with an excuse to wear a rather smazzing suit, as well as allowing practically everyone who came along to get their name mentioned, causing about fifty rounds of applause, and incredibly sore hands. It was nice to feel the searing pain of victory in the hands again, but it was a feeling not too warmly welcomed.

But that wasn’t all; there was also a set of special awards for those guys who just had to push one block further. One of the awards handed out was the 100% attendance award- an award that three people ironically didn’t turn up to claim. But the remaining one pupil that DID show up was greeted with a rather big set of applause, a little certificate, and approximately 16 kilograms of ego increase. But who was that pupil? Your answer lies in the owner of this blog.

The craziness doesn’t stop there, however. The next day was a fancy dress day for children in need, and in order to take advantage, I came in an outfit even wackier then the previous incarnation of Darth Vader. For this level of wackiness, I decided to go as a rather snazzy Mario, complete with gloves and a glorifying hat.

You wouldn’t be wrong to assume this was a bad Super Smash Bros pose, but it just had to be done. Not doing a cool pose with a Mario outfit would have been almost criminal, so doing so meant a chance not wasted. Wahoo!

There was indeed a Luigi (who is shown with Mario in the picture below soon), but there wasn’t a Peach! Seems like Mario’s complete video game crew were in another castle. Or in this case, a different school. It was worth it though; Mario definitely was the way to go today. I fear however that next year it may start to get a little predictable- if people end up expecting Mario, I might have to surprise them once again.

Charles Martinet, the man behind the voice, has posted to his Twitter account that Mario will be available to talk to, in real time, at the Nintendo World Store in Manhattan beginning Friday, November 27th.  These appearances will be from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm every day until December 31st.  People will be able to go into the store and chat with the mustachioed plumber.

Anyone in the New York area should head out and send us a report.

Why, oh why, don’t they make commercials for games like this anymore? I would buy that game no matter how bad it was. That, my firends, is brilliant marketing. The eighties were the days.

Oggi è il 20 novembre. Per me è una data familiare, essendo il compleanno di mia madre, a cui ho dedicato il mio libro.

Ma faccio un passo indietro, a qualche giorno fa.

Sono a pranzo dai miei suoceri, Emilia e Mario. Sto parlando della libreria Edison e di come l’hanno ristrutturata. Emilia, alla quale ho dedicato un intero set su Flickr, mi dice che non l’ha ancora vista. Le dico, che problema c’è, un giorno, finito il pranzo, io te e Ale ci andiamo a prendere il caffè. E lei, no, macché, come faccio, prima devo finire le faccende, e così via. Insomma, declina l’invito. Ogni tanto io e Ale abbiamo questa missione, portarla da qualche parte che non siano le botteghe per fare la spesa o i centri commerciali il sabato pomeriggio. Sicché abbiamo insistito. Niente. Le dico: ma non c’è un posto dove ti piacerebbe andare, sul mare, che ne so? Fa lei: mah, un posto ci sarebbe: al cimitero. E’ tanto che non ci vado. Lui (Mario, ndr) non mi ci porta mai. Dice Ale: possibile che una, di tutti i posti, voglia andare al cimitero? Poi mi viene in mente che a giorni sarebbe stato il 20 novembre, quindi dico: andiamoci venerdì, che è il compleanno di mamma. Emilia sembra entusiasta. Dice: allora venerdì mi sbrigo a fare le faccende e andiamo.

Così è stato. Oggi abbiamo pranzato a mezzogiorno e mezzo, prima delle due Emilia aveva fatto già tutte le faccende. Mario però ci ha informato che il cimitero apriva alle due e mezzo. Indovinate un po’? Io e Ale, per passare mezzora, abbiamo portato Emilia alla libreria Edison a prendere il caffè. Le abbiamo fatto vedere l’ex cinema Lazzeri ristrutturato e trasformato in libreria, ma Emilia è parsa interessata solo ai nuovi calendari coi gattini (e questo dà ragione a Elio e le storie tese riguardo alla scelta della copertina dell’ultimo CD).

Alle 14e30 puntuali siamo arrivati davanti ai cancelli del cimitero appena spalancati. Prima però Emilia ha comprato 4 orchidee. Così, a occhio.

Prima orchidea: Mia mamma. Buon compleanno, mamma.

Seconda orchidea: Mio babbo.

Terza visita (senza orchidea): Zia Franca (mia).

Terza orchidea: Zia Bruna (di Ale, cognata di Emilia)

Quarta orchidea: Zia Liliana (di Ale, altra cognata di Emilia)

Altre visite senza orchidee (ormai finite): Il suocero di Emilia, la suocera di Emilia, il cognato di Emilia, i genitori del cognato di Emilia, i genitori di un altro cognato di Emilia. E forse dimentico qualcuno. Comunque: a un certo punto Emilia, indicando una foto, dice: lo vedi lui? Quella accanto è la moglie. Lui veniva sempre qui a trovarla, tutti i giorni, sistemava i fiori, la tomba, ci si salutava, ogni tanto, quando si veniva. Poi un giorno siamo venuti e l’abbiamo visto in una foto accanto a lei. L’ultima volta era vivo e poi eccolo lì. E poi ha concluso con la mia frase preferita, una perla di saggezza rara (Emilia è un genio!): “Pare impossibile, si finisce.”

E così è anche finita la nostra visita al cimitero, non prima però di aver fatto una capatina a salutare Gilda, che non so chi fosse ma dalla foto sembrava una vecchina molto perbene. Non so se avete notato che Emilia è andata a trovare solo conoscenti o parenti acquisiti. Questo perché lei è originaria della Maremma, e tutti i suoi parenti morti sono sepolti là. Prima o poi toccherà portarcela…

Torniamo in avanti. Dicevo che oggi è il 20 novembre. Mia madre avrebbe compiuto 67 anni. Ho ritrovato questa poesia che ricordavo di avere scritto quando ero all’Isola d’Elba. Mmmmm, periodo buiotto. Si intitola

Oggi è il compleanno della madre

che mi ha fatto così complicato

Ho scritto questa poesia il 20 novembre 2002.

Neanche un anno dopo a mia madre è stato diagnosticato un cancro alla gola.

L’anno successivo le sono venuti due infarti e un tumore alle ossa.

L’anno successivo il terzo infarto le è stato fatale.

E ho fatto una sintesi molto stringata.

Nel 2005, per me, è cambiato qualcosa.

Qualcuno che legge lo sa.

Su Wikipedia ho scoperto che il 20 novembre 1942, oltre a mia madre, è nata un’altra donna con delle qualità. Enjoy.

Around a dozen new titles are flooding the market on Friday, as the video game industry prepares itself for the Christmas shopping period.

With the big day only around five weeks away, many of the industry’s biggest hitters see this week as the perfect opportunity to release their flagship games.

Top of the pile is New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Nintendo’s first 2-D Mario game on a home console since 1992 is a safe bet to top the sales charts come Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, for the sport fans out there, the Wii versions of Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 and Formula 1 2009 are also available from today.

But if Nintendo isn’t your thing, or you’re looking for something with a little more action, don’t worry.

Xbox 360 owners can at last get their hands on Valve’s long awaited first-person-shooter, Left 4 Dead 2 – exclusive to Microsoft’s system.

Another much anticipated sequel, Assassin’s Creed 2 from Ubisoft Montreal, is also available to pick up from today, on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Also among today’s pile of releases on PS3 and 360 are Lego Indiana Jones 2, Dragon Age: Origins and Konami’s video game adaptation of the Saw movie franchise.

For those who prefer to do their gaming on the move however, today sees the unveiling of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky for Nintendo DS.

What will be in his stocking come the 25th?

But which game will prevail as the Christmas number one?

A spokesperson for the high-street retailer, Game, said: “So far we’re selling more copies of Assassin’s Creed 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 than the new Mario game.

“We had a lot of pre-orders for Left 4 Dead 2 and expect it to sell a lot over the next couple of weeks.

“Although we’ve sold a decent number for Lego Indiana Jones, we currently sell it as part of a console bundle, so it’s hard to tell if people are only buying it because it’s part of an offer.”
