I must say that I have always loved pop-up books; they’re pretty damn clever — and are a category or genre of their own. Recently my interest have been rekindled by reading pop-up children’s books at my kids’ bedtimes.  Sadly, my little boy is in the middle of the terrible twos and so likes to destroy anything that has flaps or pop-ups.  Oh well.

Maybe when they’re older, and can appreciate the art of the pop-up, I will be able to get them something fabulous — possibly something like the works of Marion Bataille — check out www.abc3dbook.com/.

The abc3d book is just wonderful, despite it’s simplicity, it remains creative and ingenious.

I know my blogging performance has become shockingly non existant this month, but as always I have the perfect excuse/person to blame; the male species :) (note the smile)
Yes, it would appear I am under the spell of a gentleman… so blogging has taken a back seat for a little while!

HOWEVER there is no doubt that my passion for all things Graphique is still very strong, only the other day I found myself drooling over a book. But this was no ordinary book! Found here, it’s a youtube video of an alphabet pop up book by Marion Bataille

How actually amazing is that?
Of course it is the genius produce of a French lady, as this simple equation will explain:
Female + Parisian culture = WINNER

It went into publication in October 2008 so its like a classic now, nearly a years anniversary and all! If anyone wants to celebrate the years anniversary of it’s publishing then feel free to buy me it 

ABC3D is a 3D typography book by Marion Bataille. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. So, this post is for those like me. Hold on to your jaws, ladies and gentlemen!
A 3D presentation of each letter is presented in the most creative way possible.

I was shopping in Electric Shadows Bookshop a few weeks ago and I came across this awesome book. ABC 3D by Marion Bataille.

For one of my graphic design courses this semester I was working on a promotional package piece… which was something made out of paper in 3D form that a customer or consumer would be entertained by and want to keep coming back to that company. My company was Aldi, and I was focusig on strawberry recipes. I was searching Electric Shadows for some inspiration, and came across this book as I was walking out the door. I bought the book, not necesorily thinking it would be helpful to my assignment, but it was a cool book – so why not hey?

As I looked through it when I got to my car, I thought some of these pop-outsmight work with my strawberries…. there’s no harm in trying, right! And that is exactly what I did!

So in the end, I did draw inspiration from this spectacular book!! I used something similar to the B, creating a cake recipe where the strawberries pop out of the top of the cake when you open the card.

Some months ago, I was surprised by the video of the book “ABC3D”, posted on youtube to present the book by Marion Bataille, a French graphic designer who dedicated her talent to make an alphabet-pop up book that became one of the most popular (you can see the video here).

Today I would like to show another illustrated book, “Bruits“, published in France by Thierry Magnier, where the main character, Louis, with his like-a-ear head, is trying to escape from the confusion and noise of the city, discovering new sounds all over the world and finally losing himself in a discoteque full of music and friends.

 At first sight, I was attracted by the collage style and the use of graphic elements in the cover. Marion simply evokes the presence of sounds by using the circles, influences by comic but not only.

The enormous head of Louis seems to be simply big but we can easly understand that is a great ear, which means an extra ability to listen to what is happening around. The equivalence is immediate: with the big ear he can listend to every sound and every sound is stronger than usual.

Marion plays with letters and sizes through all the book, and also colors become a part of the expression of sounds in fonts. And following this, objects are built by their own noise, that means that the same noise is what makes objects (buildings, cars, bikes etc…) real. The text, the few words we can find, is simply a plus, but it isn’t the main part of the book. This is a complete visual and graphic story, with clear influences from cinema, graphic design and artistic experiments as we can see for example in Dadaism and old cartoons and comics. 

As Marion had been working for different newspapers and publishing houses, it’s clear that she’s calling to her own experience and technical baggage to make this interesting book. And as you can see in these pages, there shouldn’t be another font for the cow than this one, used for milk boxes, and the 80’s body type of the last pages is perfect to build the the ground, the walls and the sounds of a disco. 

It’s really interesting this work on fonts, illustrations and sounds. And don’t lose the end page! It’s a good eye exercise…

ABC 3D is an innovative book that exhibits the alphabet in a pop up style 3Dimensional fashion and with some letters actually moving. A great looking book by Marion Bataille. MARION BATAILLE is a graphic and book designer who has never before been published in this country. She lives in Paris, France

The washington Post describes it as “Easily the most innovative alphabet book of the year, if not the decade.”

Esse vídeo apresenta o livro ABC3D, de Marion Bataille. O livro é um pop-up book, que tem como intuito compor tridimensionalmente as 26 letras do alfabeto. A autora mergulha na questão formal da tipografia para construir seu alfabeto, utilizando-se de recursos como espelhamento, aproveitamento de um tipo para construir outro e deslocamento de partes do tipo. As soluções encontradas geram um resultado visual muito interessante.

Seguramente alguna vez hayas visto un libro de este estilo (pop-up) sobre todo dedicado a niños. En este caso y como verás en el vídeo es un proyecto mucho más acabado y artístico.

El libro ha sido creado por Marion Bataille y es un repaso a cada una de las letras del alfabeto de una manera artística y bastante sorprendente.

Sempre achei os pop-ups books fascinantes desde os livros de histórias infantis com que tive contato na infância até os livros mais elaborados vendidos atualmente. Porém confesso que tenho um bloqueio quanto a idealização e realização para projetos com tais características. Já houveram algumas varias tentativas sem sucesso..

Na minha ronda sagrada diária pela blogosfera me deparei com um post muito interessante no Fubiz, em seguida, no Sedentário e por fim, no Macmagazine. Neste ultimo, achei as informações que tanto buscava desde a visita ao Fubiz. Então vamos ao que interessa..

Trata-se de um projeto da designer francesa Marion Bataille formada pela Escola Superior de Artes Gráficas de Paris. No qual todas as letras do alfabeto são reproduzidas a medida em que as páginas vão sendo viradas. A sutileza e a sacada para algumas letras são simplesmente geniais (exemplo do W e O, P, Q e R). Enfim, melhor do que ficar descrevendo é mostrar..

Por fim, a melhor parte, a qual estava procurando: o livro será comercializado. O lançamento será dia 14 de outubro de 2008. No entanto, você já pode reservar o seu na Amazon.com pela quantia de U$ 20.. o meu já está reservado..

ABC3D was designed by Paris-based graphic designer, Marion Bataille. This pop-up book has a fun lenticular cover and other clever little surprises inside. I especially love the way she handled E & F, Q & R and V & W. This video features a mock-up of the actual book which will be available for purchase in October 2008 from Roaring Brook Press. You can pre-order it now on amazon.com. I just ordered my copy. Can’t wait!
