Hilary Duff, the former Lizzie McGuire actress was in New York City in May 2009, filming her guest appearance on long-running crime drama Law & Order: SVU. Also on hand for the taping were Law & Order: SVU stars Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay—the latter of whom has just returned to work following her ongoing lung-related illnesses.

Crime-related roles seem to be Duff’s plan for moving on from her tweener roots. The 22-year-old is slated to star in an upcoming movie about 1930s bank robbers Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, which is due to begin filming in 2010.

De wekkerradio rukt Mariska uit een verontrustende droom. Wat er precies in gebeurde is ze al vergeten zodra ze de radio wat zachter zet, maar het gevoel dat er iets mis is blijft hangen. Ze schiet snel haar kleren van gisteren aan, doet de gordijnen open – en ontdekt dat de wereld in de nacht totaal veranderd is.

Buiten is alles bevroren. De dauw op het gras, de schuttingen, de daken. De sloten tussen de akkers verderop, buiten het dorp. Een plaatje. Stil en geheimzinnig. Het dorp laat niks los. De enige beweging is een kauw die opvliegt uit een boom, misschien geschrokken van een van de vele katten in Oosterwaarden. Mariska realiseert zich nu dat ze haar adem inhoudt.

Het wordt een schaatsdag vandaag.

Ze trekt haar kleren weer uit en zoekt een warme trui, kniekousen, extra sokken, een spijkerbroek. De nasmaak van de droom vervaagt en Mariska begint zich te verheugen op een ongewoonlijke dag op het ijs met haar klas. De Schutterij is vast al erwtensoep aan het maken en warme chocolademelk. Beneden zet ze koffie en gaat dan weer naar boven, naar de tweede slaapkamer.

De kamer staat vol met nog steeds niet uitgepakte dozen. Dit zou eigenlijk Riks studeerkamer worden, maar ze weet niet of dat ooit nog gaat gebeuren. Als ze het over samenwonen wil hebben verandert hij snel van onderwerp, of hij zegt geërgerd dat dit nu niet een goed moment is om het te bespreken, of erger: hij zegt dat het een goed idee is in principe, alsof dit de eerste keer is dat ze het voorstelt en hij er nog niet echt over nagedacht had. Mariska schudt de gedachte van zich af en begint dozen open te trekken op zoek naar haar schaatsen.

De vierde marathon in de strijd om de Marathon Cup, gisteren in Eindhoven, is gewonnen door Bob de Vries. Bij de vrouwen werd Mariska Huisman de winnaar.

De schaatser van BAM reed in de slotfase weg uit een kopgroep van drie man en kwam alleen over de meet. Ingmar Berga en Kurt Wubben eindigden als tweede en derde. De Vries verstevigde met de winst zijn leidende positie in het algemeen klassement. Hij heeft nu 104,1 punten. De nummer twee, Sjoerd Huisman, volgt met 87 punten.

Bij de vrouwen ging de overwinning naar Mariska Huisman. De rijdster uit Andijk, die vorige week ook al in Amsterdam won, was Carla Zielman en Daniëlle Bekkering te snel af. Maria Sterk gaat nog wel aan de leiding in het klassement, maar heeft maar een punt voorsprong op Huisman.

It started about 15 yrs ago… The X-Files phenomenon in my life: Mulder and Scully. I was 15 and who didn’t want to see them together? It was insane. My life moved around the TV schedule. This was before the internet was the mayor force that moved my world; before TiVo was invented and I could only depend on my sturdy VCR recorder.

After the episode was over I would rewind the VCR and re-watch every move made, every word said. Then, when I couldn’t stand no more the absurdity of the endings and the unfinished businesses, I would sit on my PC and start typing a better ending…and alternate universe where things would go my way.

Then the internet arrived and I would spend hours finding photographs and reading what I then found out where fan fictions. I would be marveled by the ability that many people had to make up these wonderful stories. I would print them out and save them so that I could indulge on these little fantasies where Mulder and Scully would be together forever and ever.

Then the X-Files were over… my life continued and one day while browsing through the 100ths of channels of my cable TV I stopped on this re-run of a fairly new TV show. It was spin-off of the famous Law & Order. I wasn’t a fan of L&O, but this version had this couple that was completely mesmerizing; Benson and Stabler. There they were, my long lost Mulder and Scully. The unrequited love, the looks, the moves, the words.

This time, of course I was older and had different interests in my life, and as I looked at this show I became more and more fascinated by this Olivia character. There was something about the way she moved; how she projected herself that made me think a lot about myself. I started buying the DVDs because the re-runs weren’t enough and the seasons weren’t long enough. I would watch them over and over… still watch them over and over… and once again my lost inspiration for writing began again. I wanted to feel them. At times, I even wished I could be them. Insanity… very likely but they just feel so real, so close. Like this friend that you want to know more about and care more about.

That wanting to know more took me to a whole new level: the actors. Who where these people? Where did they come from, specially this Mariska Hargitay character? How come I’ve never seen her before? So I looked and whole new world opened in from of my eyes. I feel in love with Mariska Hargitay!!!

Her history, her struggles… I could identify some aspects of my life in Olivia Benson, but this Mariska character?!?! Trying to find herself in the shadow of her parents’ names. Finding herself confidence. Building her life around a cause that touched her heart and made her want to give something back. And doing all this at an age that most people I know would think is too old or too late to start something this big. I’m reaching 30 and still struggle and as the years go by I wonder if I will ever find my true self. She gives me hope. She tells me is never too late to start. Is never too late to follow a dream. Is never too late to do something good, to give something back.

I don’t want to be Mariska Hargitay… I want to be Me in a whole new way. And someday, I hope I can stand in front of my dear MH and tell her: “Thank you, for being such a great you…because you taught me that I could be a great me.”

About me…

I’m, as today, a happy wife and mother of 4 kids.  I’m currently 29, and dreading the 30s.  I like to think that at times I defeat most odds.  For instance.  My DH and I are a ridiculously happy couple. We met fast, got together even faster, and a year later I got pregnant.  Had the baby, then got married and now 10 yrs together later, 8 yrs of marriage later, and 4 kids later, we’re as passionate about each other as in day one. 

We constantly find old acquaintances, who are so surprised when they find out we’re still together.  When we ask them why they’re surprised, their usual answer is something like, “well…you know…the way you two started…”.  So apparently, what’s “normal” to us is not “normal”.

I advocate for women to have as a natural childbirth as they can possibly have. (I do understand that sometimes it’s not possible.), to breastfeed their kids for as long as they can, to co-sleep, to carry them as often as possible, to tread lightly on medications and medical interventions. To teach them (your kids) what you want them to learn yourself, but give them space to question and search and grow.  To not believe everything you hear, or read, or see (studying communications, radio & tv, taught me that much).  To have profound faith of the good in people, but be careful as hell about everyone, because, mankind is mankind’s worst enemy.

About this blog…

So this is what I’ve been thinking (I never stop).  I ramble while writing…a lot. (I ramble when talking too but that’s not the point here.) So…I have this natural ability to start a subject, and finish talking about something completely unrelated to it.  I decided that people should benefit from this problem of mine and what better way to do so than to entertain you with a blog.  Here you can read my stupidities if you feel like it.

My favorite subjects (though that can change at any point):

Law & Order: SVU – Because..really…who can’t love Mariska and Chris, but specially Mariska.  (She’s my girl crush. *hush* don’t tell DH.)

CSI: Miami – Just so that I can say how much I hate Horatio and that stupid thing with the glasses.

Breastfeeding – Because I’ve being doing that for 8 yrs almost non-stop.

Homeschooling – Got tired of the s**t that they teach at kids in school now days.

Doctors (especially pediatricians) – Who doesn’t have a problem with their HMO?

Economics, Marketing, Radio and Television, Photography, Advertising, Puerto Rico in general, and of course…anything woman and child health related (childbirth, reproductive rights, vaccines, etc.)

So have fun loving me or hating me; I don’t mind either way.

Career
In 1982, Hargitay was crowned Miss Beverly Hills USA, and was fourth runner up at the Miss California USA Pageant in Oxnard. She made her screen debut with a small role in Star 80. Within a few years she had landed recurring roles in the television series Downtown and Falcon Crest, in which she played the character Carly Fixx. She portrayed police officer Angela Garcia in the 1992 series Tequila & Bonetti, and appeared in an episode of the fourth season of Seinfeld. Two years later, Hargitay portrayed Didi Edelstein, the sexy next-door neighbor, in the 1995 sitcom Can’t Hurry Love, which starred Nancy McKeon. In 1997, Hargitay played detective Nina Echeverria on the drama series Prince Street, and had a recurring role as Cynthia Hooper during the fourth season of ER.
Hargitay has appeared on numerous other television programs, including: Freddy’s Nightmares, Ellen, All American Girl, Baywatch, Cracker, Gabriel’s Fire, In the Heat of the Night, JoJo’s Circus, The Single Guy, Wiseguy, and thirtysomething. Her voice is featured on the 2005 video game True Crime: New York City. Hargitay also had a minor role (“Hooker in Bar”) in the 1995 film Leaving Las Vegas, and briefly replaced Gabrielle Fitzpatrick in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, although the footage was deemed unusable.
Since 1999, Hargitay has portrayed Det. Olivia Benson, the female lead in the drama series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. “As a woman, it’s gratifying to play such a multilayered part,” she stated on her official website. “Olivia is not only a competent, street-smart cop, she’s also an empathetic woman who can respond emotionally to victims of terrible crimes without compromising her professionalism.” As a result of her casting, Hargitay has been named as the “highest paid TV actress” working today in the Guinness Book of World Records 2008 Edition.

Personal life
Hargitay speaks Hungarian, French, Spanish and Italian as well as English. On August 28, 2004, in Santa Barbara, California, she married Peter Hermann, an actor and writer who has often appeared on SVU as Defense Attorney Trevor Langan. On June 28, 2006, Hargitay gave birth to August Miklos Friedrich Hermann, by caesarean section. During the last months of her pregnancy, she took maternity leave from SVU, and was temporarily replaced by Connie Nielsen. She appeared with her baby, August, in a Got Milk? ad in January 2007.

Upon winning her Emmy on August 27, 2006, Hargitay made a point of thanking her father for everything he had done for her in her life. Just 17 days later, on September 14, 2006, her father died from multiple myeloma in Los Angeles, California, aged 80.
In late December 2008, she suffered a partially collapsed lung after a sledding accident in the Hamptons.
On March 3, 2009, Hargitay was hospitalized after suffering chest pains. It was disclosed that she would probably need more surgery.

Philanthropy
Hargitay co-founded the Joyful Heart Foundation, an organization that provides support to women who have been sexually assaulted.
Hargitay also has worked with the Mount Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention program; NBC’s “The More You Know” campaign; Safe Horizon; Santa Monica Rape Crisis Treatment Center; Project ALS; Girl Scouts of the USA; and the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness. She has been an honorary board member of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
