Last.fm claims that Marissa Nadler is an ‘American dark folk artist’. I think that this is quite a fair comment. Her music is based upon her distinctive vocal, which often echoes through her acoustic fingerpicking. Melancholic music at its finest. I think she has some similarities to the amazing Alela Diane’s debut record ‘The Pirate’s Gospel’.

Have you heard of Odetta? If you’re a fairweather folkster like me, chances are you probably haven’t. She was an American singer, actress, guitarist, songwriter, and a human rights activist, who had Carly Simon weak at the knees and Maya Angelou waxing cosmological. You’ve probably heard of some of the acts she influenced, though: Joan Baez, Mavis Staples, Janis Joplin… she is even indirectly responsible for the career of Bob Dylan, but don’t hold that against her.

Her music is joyful, playful, pissed-off, regretful, angry, and has the power to tie your bowels into knots. The folks at Wears The Trousers Magazine have had the good sense to organise a tribute album, Beautiful Star: The Songs of Odetta, featuring a selection of Odetta’s finest songs sung by a range of established indie artists (Marissa Nadler, Liz Durrett) and up-and-coming, hot-out-of-the-studio new talent (Haunted Stereo, Katey Brooks). Released on November 30th, all proceeds will go to women’s charities (The Fawcett Society and The Women’s Resource Centre), so there really is no excuse not to buy it. Needless to say this tribute to a great under-acknowledged female singer, organised by a feminist music magazine, whose proceeds are being donated to charities aimed at helping women, gets a big feminist thumbs up from EYS. Head on over to their Myspace page and pre-order yourself a good old slice of ear-nourishing feminist do-goodery. Sail away, ladies.

This is a compilation of cover songs curated by Alan Pedder and Charlotte Richardson, of Wears The Trousers magazine. All the profit will be split between The Fawcett Society and The Women’s Resource Centre.

Laura Gibson – beast of seasons

Alweer zo’n folkzangeresje? Heb ik niet genoeg aan Alela Diane en Marissa Nadler?

Ja joh! En, nee joh!
Ik luister zo ongeveer sinds 2003 naar folkmuziek en dan eigenlijk alleen naar meiden die mooie folk zingen, want eerlijk gezegd vind ik mannen daarin niet zo sterk, althans mijn oortjes zijn daar niet verzot op. Laura Gibson is zo’n meid die mooie folk zingt, ze rukt je uit je beslommeringen en neemt je mee naar een droom waarin alle kleine mooie dingetjes oplichten. Het zijn geen zware teksten als die van Orion Rigel Dommisse, haar stem is rauwer als die van Marissa Nadler, en het tempo is ideaal om letterlijk bij weg te dromen. Het zouden stuk voor stuk slaapliedjes kunnen zijn, maar eenmaal in die droom leeft het dan weer op met dansende violen die gestreeld worden door de maneschijn en daal je dan weer af in de warme spelonken waar kleine schitteringen je ogen (je oren dus) weten te prikkelen. En dus is Laura met haar muziek de nieuwste aanwinst in het lijstje meiden die mooie folkmuziek maken, ik laat me nog even strelen door haar stem. (klik het albumplaatje om het album te beluisteren)

Silvia, Silvia, Silvia…

SO BEAUTIFUL. What a lovely video. So many beautiful songs courtesy of Marissa Nadler… I read this earlier, it’s a fascinating story about conjoined twins Daisy and Violet, which Marissa based the song Daisy and Violet from the album Ivy and the Clovers on. Basically, the twins were born in 1908 and had a terribly hard, and completely intriguing life. Read up, read up!

Pour sa première journée, le festival de La Route du Rock de Saint-Malo proposait les très attendus My Bloody Valentine, ainsi que quelques groupes noisy-pop plus contemporains, à commencer par A Place To Bury Strangers et Deerhunter. Heureusement les sets acoustiques de Mark Kozelek et Marissa Nadler sont les bienvenus pour démarrer en douceur le festival. Récit d’une première journée particulièrement chargée en déflagrations noisy.

Après une conférence de presse avec les musiciens de Tortoise plutôt chaleureuss, je me rend au Palais du Grand Large. A peine ai-je le temps de s’asseoir confortablement que Mark Kozelek arrive seul sur scène, juste avec une guitare acoustique à nylon. Pendant une heure, le songwriter de Red House Painters et Sun Kil Moon exécute un set exemplaire, où sa superbe voix réverbérée ainsi que les cordes pincées de sa guitare viennent emporter le public avec une grande humilité.

Une courte pause, et Marissa Nadler arrive seule sur scène. Exécutant un premier titre avec une voix mélancolique à vous filer la chair de poule, son jeu de picking s’inscrit parfaitement dans la continuité du set de Mark Kozelek. Vite rejoint par un groupe, Marissa Nadler gagne l’adhésion de la salle avec des titres folk, atmosphériques et légèrement mystiques. Alors que la chanteuse semble littéralement habitée par les personnages de ses chansons, beaucoup de personnes quittent la salle pour rejoindre le Fort de St-Père. Un choix plutôt injuste face à l’indéniable beauté élégiaque des titres de Marissa.

Je reste jusqu’au bout, et arrive donc tard sur le Fort de St-Père, ratant Crystal Stilts. Lorsque je débarque enfin sur le site, après une longue marche depuis le parking, Deerhunter a déjà exécuté quelques titres. L’impressionnant Bradford Cox triture sa guitare électrique pour en faire sortir quelques sonorités étranges et bruitiste, tandis que le bassiste Josh Fauver, très extraverti, entraine la troupe avec une rythmique particulièrement efficace. Naviguant entre noisy-pop et post-punk, le set de Deerhunter est superbe et nous prépare pour la suite qui s’annonce tout aussi électrique.

Le temps de faire le tour du site, je repère un stand qui vend des vinyles, qui se révèlera très utile par la suite. Tortoise arrive alors sur scène et confirme immédiatement son statut de supergroupe en démarrant son set par l’énorme High Class Slim Came Floatin’In. Composé en mille-feuille le titre propose diverses ambiances marquées par des claviers krautrock joués par un John McEntire impérial, la basse énorme de Doug McCombs et surtout d’une batterie qui sonne à la fois tribale et jazzy. Sur scène, chaque membre de Tortoise joue de trois instruments au minimum, jonglant de l’un à l’autre entre les morceaux, parfois même au milieu d’un seul, comme Dan Bitney qui passe allègrement de la batterie au vibraphone, de la basse à la guitare. Carré, efficace, et surtout d’une grande classe, Tortoise exécute des titres de son dernier album ainsi que des plus anciens comme le superbe TNT où les accents rocks et jazzy auront vite fait d’emporter le Fort de St-Père. Parfois lorgnant plus vers un côté tribal, notamment quand Dan Bitney et John Herndon jouent tous les deux à la batterie, Tortoise fut le grand moment de cette soirée.

Pour se préparer à My Bloody Valentine, je prends des bouchons, je me les place bien au fond des oreilles, puis je pars me réfugier loin de la scène. Inaudible, le groupe de Kevin Shields démarre par I Only Said, alterne des titres issus des albums, “Isn’t Anything” et “Loveless” et noie les festivaliers sous un déluge de guitares saturées dépassant allègrement l’humainement écoutable. Impossible d’entendre les voix des impassibles Bilinda Butcher et Kevin Shields sous cette masse de distorsion. Seule Debbie Googe, qui martèle sa basse avec des accords violents, semble apporter quelque chose de différent de cette chape de plomb noisy. Comme je les avais déjà vu il y a un an au Zenith, l’effet nostalgique a disparu, et lassé de ce déluge de larsens inécoutable, je pars alors dans le stand des labels pour repartir avec un vinyle de The Wedding Present. Entre deux larsens, je finis par reconnaître le superbe Soon qui réussit à ressembler à quelque chose au milieu de ce set désastreux. Enfin My Bloody Valentine termine son passage avec You Made Me Realise et son désormais célèbre pont bruitiste. C’est finalement à ce moment, loin de toute mélodie, que My Bloody Valentine trouve ses marques. Mais rien n’y fait, malgré quelques embellies, le passage des parrains du shoegazing se révèle désastreux de bout en bout.

Grâce aux bouchons, mes oreilles sont encore vivantes, et je peux en remettre une couche en terme de déflagrations guitaristiques avec A Place To Bury Strangers. Fidèle à sa réputation, le groupe d’Olivier Ackermann réveille les fantômes de Jesus And Mary Chain, et noie de nouveau les festivaliers encore restants d’une vague de guitares saturées. Visiblement fatigués, ils semblent avoir du mal à suivre le groupe. Est-ce l’heure qui commence à être tardive ? L’effet de l’alcool ? Où encore les acouphènes qui se réveillent ? Toujours est-il qu’avec un set de shoegazing audible, le groupe réussit là où My Bloody Valentine s’est bien planté. Après avoir fait subir de tels affronts sonores à nos oreilles, je pars me reposer pour une prochaine journée qui s’annonce encore bien chargée.

14 août 2009 – Le rock à St-Malo, quand il fait beau c’est mieux… mais pas que.

Le temps breton s’apparente de plus en plus à celui de Scandinavie, comprenez par là que le matin et le soir vous vous pelez sérieux, mais qu’au beau milieu de la journée vous avez des températures susceptibles de nous débarrasser de toutes les mamies trop encombrantes. En ce 14 aout à Saint-Malo, on y a eu droit, comme durant les sept jours qui ont précédé l’événement.

Arrivée sur un site vide, un bénévole arrose la terre pour que la poussière ne vole pas trop, en vain. Sur scène les balances de Deerhunter font froid dans le dos, les enceintes semblent déjà flancher. Direction le Palais du Grand Large pour vérifier ce que Marissa Nadler a dans le ventre. Prestation de plus d’une heure, assez intéressante en son genre, abstraction faite qu’on est censé assister à un festival de rock. Marissa livre un spectacle folk, plein de ballades éthérées, pas désagréable pour se remettre du trajet en voiture. Seule ou accompagnée de ses trois musiciens, Marissa manque régulièrement de sa voix claire et cristalline, dommage. Le spectacle est plus intéressant lorsque son guitariste la soutient de sa voix, le duo fonctionne bien. A suivre donc. (7/10)

Détour par les remparts (accompagnée d’une énorme glace) et on file au Fort pour Deerhunter, sacrifice fait de Crystal Stilts puisqu’il y a une centaine de voitures qui doivent se garer avant nous… Deerhunter est mauvais, il n’y a pas d’autre qualificatif. Même le batteur s’ennuie ferme. Le chanteur rachitique pousse la chansonnette, les guitaristes s’écoutent jouer, la basse est trop forte… Un peu pathétique, première déception de la soirée. Autre caractéristique de ce groupe un peu usant : ils n’ont pas appris à terminer leurs titres et étendent lamentablement leurs accords similaires pendant cinq minutes avant d’arrêter. Bref, on se console au bar en se disant que ce n’est qu’un concert, qu’une prestation live ne vaut pas pour un avis définitif, tout ça… sans grande conviction. (5/10)

La suite du programme est moins alléchante car plus classique mais au final bien plus intéressante. Le quintet de Tortoise s’applique sur un set de post-rock très jazzy, à l’arrière-gout brésilien. Les rythmiques sucrées côtoient les riffs aiguisés, le batteur cette fois s’en donne à cœur-joie, élément central de leur configuration scénique, de profil au premier plan, rappelant en cela la mise en scène de Battles. Les sonorités douces et éthérées se font peu à peu plus métalliques et acérées. Le tout étant très bien accompagné par un D-jing de qualité mêlant ancien logo d’Antenne 2 et plaines tantôt sèches et herbacées, tantôt vertes comme la Normandie… Sans conteste le meilleur concert de la soirée. (8,5/10)

Après être bien reposé et relaxée, on a envie d’en rester là. Surtout que ce qui suit n’est pas beau à voir, avant même que le moindre son ne soit émis. Une fourmilière de rodies s’active sur scène pour installer la terreur acouphènique de la soirée. Murs de plexiglas, murs d’enceinte supplémentaire, instruments prêts à cracher tout ce qu’ils ont de cordes, de peaux et de cymbales, tremblez public, voilà My Bloody Valentine.

Filtres vissés aux oreilles, un rugissement sonore me rappelle à la réalité alors que je me trouve à 300 mètres de la scène. Les vaches du coin doivent apprécier le réveil nocturne… S’en suit une prestation navrante, le chanteur balbutie dans un micro dont on n’entend qu’une onomatopée toutes les dix minutes, la batteur tape sur tout ce qui bouge plutôt que de se concentrer à essayer d’émettre des mélodies dignes de ce nom. Détail de taille, ce groupe n’a rien produit depuis 1991 mais la moyenne d’âge des fans est de 14 ans… cherchez l’erreur. Mes oreilles saignent et crient au scandale, je me carapate bien vite, ne cherchant pas à savoir si la suite sera meilleure. MBV n’est définitivement pas un groupe de scène, éventuellement un collectif de création artistique… et dans ce cas ils n’ont rien à faire là. (1/10)

Samedi 15 août – La musique de la Route du Rock, c’est comme le bon vin, elle se bonifie avec le temps.

Après la soirée navrante du vendredi, on remet le couvert le lendemain sans grand espoir : soleil, légère brise, lunettes de soleil et bar VIP. Arrivée sur un site vide (bon d’accord j’ai usé de mes droits et grugé toute la queue), on dirait qu’une bombe atomique est passée hier : plus d’herbe, plus de déchets, plus d’enceintes crachouillant un son infâme… Le festival le moins écolo et le moins bien organisé de France peut se vanter de savoir exploiter ses bénévoles au maximum.

St-Vincent apparaît timidement et se met à jouer pour cinquante péquins. Initialement programmée après Papercuts, on lui a visiblement fait une mauvaise surprise. Tout le bénéfice est pour nous puisqu’ainsi, on peut profiter deux fois mieux de la prestation de cette frêle mais déterminée silhouette. Telle une Patti Smith avec sa peau de Blanche Neige, sa boule de cheveux frisés noir et son petit costume bleu et rouge (rouge à lèvres assorti) dévoilant des épaules musclées et une physionomie nerveuse, les accords qui sortent de la guitare de St-Vincent sont incisifs, précis, surprenants. Régulièrement, sa petite tête disparaît derrière la toile noire qui cache ses jambes, on s’attend presque à ce qu’elle nous fasse un spectacle de marionnettes. Les mélodies de la New-Yorkaise alternent entre douces ballades et accords plus rock. Le tout est surprenant, touchant et… définitivement plus intéressant que le disque. Première bonne surprise de la soirée. (7,5/10)

Je ne trahirai pas Papercuts et Camera Obscura en disant que c’était mou du genou et terriblement banal. Passons, le bar VIP est là pour nous réconforter. (5/10)

La seconde bonne surprise nous vient des Kills. Peu importe la drogue qu’ils se sont enfilé ce soir là, le duo est plus sexuel que jamais, à l’écoute l’un de l’autre. On a presque envie de leur pardonner leur mauvaise habitude de faire sauter qui son ampli, qui son jack… Le spectacle est beau, bien rodé. Cela dit, The Kills va devoir se renouveler sous peu s’il ne veut pas terminer aux oubliettes des groupes de rock incapables de produire plus de trois mélodies : soit ils privilégieront leur duo au profit de nouvelles harmonies et sonorités (un peu de créativité que diable), soit il leur faudra s’équiper de musiciens dignes de ce nom car la boite à rythme sur trois album, ça commence à gaver un peu – Kate Moss squatte leurs concerts ? Eh bien mettons là à contribution à la batterie ! (8/10)

Pour terminer la soirée en beauté, Peaches livre un show haut en couleurs. Accompagnée des Sweet Machine, trio au look néo-gothique post-hardcore, elle décline une dizaine de costumes tous plus amusants les uns que les autres, allant de la fraise Tagada au string lumineux à nœud, en passant par les tenues de lutteurs mexicains et le justaucorps de patineuse sur lequel sont projetés des images… Une vieille hardeuse en collants à gaine n’a jamais été aussi sexy qu’elle ce soir là. Les titres/ tubes s’enchainent, le public se déchaine modérément (beaucoup trop ivres ces bretons).

Peaches ne fait aucune faute de gout, aucune impasse, occupant tous les recoins de la scène et de la fosse. Le fake duo avec Iggy Pop est tordant, les solos de guitare électrique des biatch tout autant. Une belle prestation pour une artiste qui avait pris un virage un peu dangereux. J’espère bien que les cathos culs-bénis de St-Malo se retournent dans leur lit. (8,5/10)

Trop fatiguée pour Four Tet, j’écoute de loin, calmes et douces ondulations électroniques. Il faut garder des forces pour le lendemain, finalement ce festival construit sa programmation pour les plus endurants, le meilleur est avenir…

Dimanche 16 août – A la recherche de la jouissance auditive

Dernière journée et non des moindres pour cette Route du Rock ensoleillée. Heures de sommeil cumulées : 8, Cafés : 7, Filtres audio : ok, copains : une vingtaine, bar VIP et cocktails : ok. On a tout ? Allez zouh !

Ca commence tôt (17h30) avec Gang Gang Dance que j’ai encore une fois eu le privilège de rater mais dont on ne m’a dit que du bien – notamment de la chanteuse. A vérifier à Paris prochainement donc.

J’arrive à peu près chancelante pour la prestation d’Andrew Bird. Scénographie recherchée de vieux cabinet de curiosités anglais, musiciens en forme, la pop-rock d’Andrew réussit à me requinquer pour tout les concerts qui vont suivre. (7,5/10)

Les jeunes écervelés ne sont pas présents ce soir là, les groupes sont de plus haute voltige, le public est sensiblement plus âgé et sage. Dominique A porte cette lourde tâche de représenter à lui seul toute la France et ce qu’elle compte d’artistes intéressants. Dans Paplar, le petit journal local, il déplore l’absence de Holden au festival (normal, ils chantent L’orage aurais-je envie de répondre…), tape sur MBV et raconte son premier souvenir de Route du Rock : Saucisse. Seul sur scène avec sa guitare, son synthé et deux micros, il envoûte l’assistance en quelques minutes, alternant compos plus ou moins récentes. Quelques traits d’humour (pas facile de jouer au milieu d’une soirée d’artistes triés sur le volet, ça ne l’empêchera pas de jouer ce qu’il veut, pas forcément pour nous faire plaisir). Le nouveau morceau Mancey est particulièrement touchant. L’homme salue, remercie et annonce le groupe suivant. Il est le premier à le faire de tout le festival, comme quoi, l’éducation, ça a du bon. (8,5/10)

Lorsque Grizzly Bear paraît enfin après une dizaine de minutes de retard, l’assemblée est si concentrée qu’on pourrait entendre les mouettes du port brailler. Côte à côte, les quatre membres font front, concentrés, prêt à interpréter Veckatimest dans son intégralité ou presque. Look Geek, le guitariste porte un tee-shirt « Köln liebt mich », le batteur un Mickey a trois oreilles ; et musique de Nerd, la maitrise des instruments dans tout ce qu’ils ont de délicat, intemporel et grandiose. Mélodies planantes, on se sent comme transporté par une sorte de foi mystique. Les effluves d’encens couvrent enfin celles de moules et saucisses. Un dauphin et un homard en plastique s’envolent et parcourent les têtes du public. Mis à part un persistant problème de grésillement, Two Weeks est jouissif, While you wait for the others finit par me faire osciller la tête tels les Oui-Oui dont je prend plaisir à me moquer. (9/10)

Après avoir eu l’impression de visiter le pays d’Alice au pays des Merveilles, on se retrouve propulsés dans la contrée électronique acide Simian Mobile Disco. Scénographie splendide avec jeu perpétuel de lumières et d’effets d’optiques, les deux compères tournent en permanence autour de leurs machines et font autant de génuflexions que le public fait de bonds et agite les bras. Déluge électronique, pluie de beats, cascade de samples, la nuit étoilée de St-Malo n’aura pas connu l’eau ce soir mais on s’en sera quand même pris plein les oreilles. Les titres retenus ne sont pas mes favoris et le son n’est pas toujours réglé come il faut, mais pour le reste rien à redire, Simian Mobile Disco est un groupe qui tient la Route (du rock et de l’electro). (8/10)

Ecouté d’une oreille et observé d’un œil, Autokratz clôturait le festival. Cet être squelettique aux allures de Nosferatu est tellement effrayant et ressemble tant à un camé avec ses veines explosées et tatouées que je ne préfère pas trop regarder. Je quitte les lieux avant d’être tentée de rester à l’after où Gang Gang Dance va mixer jusqu’au matin, il faut rentrer à Paris…

Conclusion, comme pour tout festival (exception faite du génial Garden Nef Party d’Angoulême), il y a du bon et du mauvais dans les groupes retenus et présentés. Je garderai comme points d’orgues Grizzly Bear et Peaches à ma grande surprise. Ce retour en terre natale laisse pour la première fois des traces très positives. Cool je vieillis

The Black Tapes – to oni rozpoczęli festiwal na kąpielisku Słupna, grali tylko pół godziny i robili to z rozmachem, wokalista w niektórych momentach eksplodował niczym wulkan energii, nic wybitnego, lecz miło się słuchało. Zabawna sytuacja, kiedy gitarzysta chciał zagrać solówke na kolanach, kabel był krótki, wyskoczył ze wzmacniacza, a kolega z zespołu szybko go skwitował: „kurwa, zajebista solówka”.

Von Zeit – poszedłem na to głównie z powodu braku innego koncertu, miejsce pod drzewkiem było dobre, ale sam koncert wydał mi się nijaki. Pomysły i kabaretowe rozmówki mogły się podobać, lecz mi to nie przypadło do gustu. Miłym akcentem było ponownie spotkanie małżeństwa z Poznania i kolejna ciekawa dyskusja, choć krótka bo chciałem zobaczyć…

BiFF – nie podobało mi się zupełnie i zmyłem się z pod sceny leśnej po 5 minutach. Wokalistka zrobiła z siebie jakiegoś stracha na wróble, muzyka kiepska i ten występ zapomnę bardzo szybko.

Kumka Olik – wpadłem głównie po to, żeby zobaczyć „Zaspane Poniedziałki”. Reszta utworów zwyczajna, mógłby je grać każdy zespół w ich wieku. Rozchorował im się gitarzysta i radzili sobie w trójkę, ale to nie było nic fajnego. Transparenty godne uwagi, ale ta sytuacja z „pokazaniem cycków” przez lidera to była żenada i śmierdziało mi lansem…

George Dorn Screams – bardzo mi się podobało. Do tego stopnia, że odtwarzam sobie ich kawałki w domu. Myślałem nad Pustkami, ale jakaś taka nazwa chujowa i wybrałem GDS. Jeden z lepszych koncertów na OFFie. Wokal nieziemsko łączył się z gitarową ścianą muzyków. Zostałem oczarowany i ten koncert pozostanie w mojej pamięci przez bardzo długi czas…

The Thermals – gdybym znał ich kawałki to pewnie dobrze bym się bawił. Nie można im zarzucić nudy, bo całość była nawet chwytliwa i przebojowa, lecz czegoś mi tam brakowało i choćby z tego powodu, zrezygnowałem z pogo ze zgrają childrenów.

Micachu and The Shapes – szczerze mówiąc: wpadłem na to, położyłem się pod drzewem. Nie bardzo mogłem się skupić na ich muzyce, więc poszedłem coś zjeść, a wracać mi się już do nich nie chciało, bo nie trafili do mnie.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – byłem już jakieś 30 min przed ich występem. Najpierw jako jeden z kilku osób, zająłem się odwzajemnianiem uśmiechów tej ładnej kobiety z ich zespołu w moim kierunku. Nagrałem telefonem 7 sekundowy fragment ich soundchecku, kiedy śpiewała sobie jakąś śmieszną piosenkę. Kiedy wyszli na scenę, byli dokładnie tym czego oczekiwałem. Grali dobrze, choć spodziewałem się lepszego wokalu, długo przy barierkach nie wytrzymałem i poszedłem odjebać wieśniackie pogo i pośpiewać z kilkoma typami, którzy znali te klimaty. No i genialne Come Saturday: U U UUUUU.

HEALTH – spóźniłem się jakieś 5 min, ale jak zobaczyłem co się dzieje na scenie i pod, to szybko dostałem się w tamto miejsce. Pogo było straszne, ludzie odbijali się od siebie jak szmaciane lalki, a ja razem z nimi. Pod sceną dźwięki były piekielne. Wymęczyłem się nieźle, nawdychałem kurzu i upierdoliłem, ale było warto. Bardzo ciekawy band.

Marissa Nadler – wiedziałem, że na HEALTH mogę dać w pizdę, bo odpocznę na tej świetnej kobiecie. Tak rzeczywiście było, chociaż prawie cały koncert przesłuchałem nie spoglądając na scenę, tylko siedząc po turecku. Zmęczenie dało trochę o sobie znać, ale jak Maryśka grała kawałki, które znamy to z przyjemnością słuchało mi się jej piosenek. Trochę było monotonnie, ale w obecnym stanie fizycznym nie wyrobiłbym niczego bardziej eksperymentalnego.

Fucked Up – ten występ wyznaczył u mnie trend tego jak powinien wyglądać koncert punkowy. Jak mi teraz ktoś powie o jakimś punkowym zespole, na którym podobno dużo się dzieje bo wokalista przeklina to jebne na zawał. To, co wyprawiał frontman Fucked Up nie mieści się w głowie. Przytulanie się do ludzi, podciąganie spodenek do cycków i teksty typu: „nie jestem gruby”. Nie wspominam o darciu ryja, pokładaniu się na ludziach i najlepszym – piciu redbulla i pluciem we wszystkich, którzy go trzymają. Zupełnie się tego nie spodziewałem i dostałem niezłego hita, zresztą nie tylko ja…

The Week That Was – strasznie się na tym wynudziłem, badziewie roku, nic ciekawego. A wszystko przez pomyłkę, bo w świetle chujowej lampy nie zauważyłem, że w rozkładzie miałem zaznaczone Monotonix i z „braku laku” poszedłem na to gówno. Potem strasznie żałowałem, kiedy przechodziłem obok sceny miasta muzyki i widziałem, co się tam dzieje…

Spiritualized – miałem wpaść na Disasteradio, ale podziałała na mnie ‘marka’ angoli i sobie tego nie wybaczę. Brzmiało to dla mnie miejscami jak tania podróbka Pink Floyd. Jeden kawałek mnie poruszył, było zimno, kontaktu z publiką żadnego. Nie, to było definitywne rozczarowanie, ale rozumiem, że fanom mogło się podobać. Plus za fajne światła.

Tak minął mi drugi dzień OFF Festivalu 2009. Chciałem wpaść na Final Fantasy, ale byłem tylko w koszulce i już na występie Jasone Pierce’a zamarzałem. Poza tym spanie dało o sobie znać… na polu biwakowym w nocy hity typu ‘terror’. ‘daj kamienia’ itp. Osobiście zabrakło mi klasycznego: „Ludzie, czemu wy jeszcze nie śpicie?” bądź „jestem hardkorem”.

Między 6 a 10 sierpnia w Mysłowicach miało miejsce wielkie święto muzyki niezależnej. Wbrew oczekiwaniom kapele z rewelacyjnymi albumami na koncie, takie jak The National, Spiritualized czy Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, koncertowo okazały się przewidywalne. Ale pozwoliło to zabłysnąć innym. Poniżej moje koncertowe top five tegorocznego Off Festivalu:

5. Brenda Lee DVD & Siupa – pośród masy cudownych polskich koncertów (świetne występy dali min. Gaba Kulka, Lech Janerka i Skinny Patrini) najbardziej zaczarowała mnie niemal nieznana psychodeliczna kapela. Brenda Lee DVD to rzecz nowa, a już wielka.

4. Fucked Up – mistrzowie hardcore’u z Kanady z charyzmatycznym wokalistą wiecznie spragnionym marihuany, który wijąc się pośród publiczności, roztacza swój oczywisty zapach i energię. Można go dotknąć i wskoczyć na barana. Energia w czystej postaci.

3. Handsome Furs –  już szósty raz w naszym kraju, ale to najbardziej rock’n'rollowe małżeństwo wciąż działa z tą samą siłą i wydaje się, że coraz bardziej kochają Polskę – nic dziwnego – publiczność  mają wdzięczną. Miałem okazję poznać ich kiedyś po koncercie w poznańskich Kisielicach – to nie tylko wspaniali muzycy ale i uroczy ludzie.

2. Marissa Nadler – piękna i zwiewna ulubienica Artura Rojka to wielkie odkrycie Off festivalu. Śpiewa trochę jak Joan Baez, trochę jak Martha Wainwright. Nie można jej się oprzeć. Wielkim talentem zaczarowała piątkową Scenę Trójki.

1. Final Fantasy - mistrzostwo świata. Janko muzykant po kanadyjsku położył offową publiczność na kolana swoim głosem, brzmieniem skrzypiec, tym jak z nieśmiałego chłopca przeistoczył się w showmana. “Lewis Take Off His Shirt”, “Peach Plum Pear” z repertuaru Joanny Newsom, czy “CN Towers Belong To Death” długo pozostaną w pamięci.

Dwa dni na Off Festivalu okazały się bardzo miłym doświadczeniem. Bezpretensjonalna i kameralna impreza w środkowej Europie, bez sadzenia się na lans i z naprawdę solidną artystycznie obsadą. Ot co. OK, jak dla mnie Sonic Youth jakiś albo inny Flaming Lips byłby dobrym i pożądanym headlinerem dla takiego festiwalu. Jeszcze nie ściągnąłby tu okolicznej dresiarni i nie skłonił gwiazd z serialu “Tancerze” do pokazania się na Śląsku, a już – z całą pewnością – zelektryzowałby wszystkich, których trzeba. Ale i to przyjdzie – jestem pewien.

Zmęczony jestem, więc krótko w punktach:

1. Co jest dobrą alternatywą, każdy wie mętnie i po swojemu. Ale za to teraz  dokładnie wiem, co jest dobrą alternatywą dla grania – robienie happeningu. Zwykle interaktywnego. Do pewnego stopnia u Fucked Up – z charyzmatycznym człowiekiem-górą o szerokich plecach, spadających majtkach i gołębim sercu – którzy dali popis show hardcore’owego w każdym tego słowa znaczeniu. Podobno – bo na to nie zdążyłem dotrzeć – Lucky Dragons, którzy rozdali ludziom instrumenty i zaprosili do współudziału. Ciekawa liderka Micachu & The Shapes balansująca między geniuszem a potworną amatorką. Z całą pewnością Wildbirds & Peacedrums, autorzy najbardziej ekstatycznego rytmicznie i jak dla mnie najbardziej pozytywnie zaskakującego koncertu tego kawałka imprezy, który przyszło mi zobaczyć. No i wreszcie Monotonix – ludzie, jak ja się cieszę, że na nich “zaszedłem” przypadkiem. No i cieszę się, że nie zostałem opluty ani obryzgany wydzieliną z nosa lidera, który tego wieczoru wszystkiego miał w nadmiarze – od energii i kompletnie wariackich pomysłów, aż po rzeczoną wydzielinę. To był koncert, w którym muzyka chwilami była najmniej ważną rzeczą, ale za to JAKI koncert.

W ogóle tego typu występy mają sens – w każdym z wymienionych przypadków. Bo są przeżyciami niemożliwymi do odtworzenia przy słuchaniu płyty, ani oglądaniu wyczynów poszczególnych wykonawców na YouTube. To trzeba nie tylko usłyszeć, ale zobaczyć i – w niektórych wypadkach (chodzi mi tu nie tylko o wokalistę Monotonix, który jak głosi festiwalowa fama rzeczywiście pierdnął do mikrofonu) – poczuć. No i układanie programu festiwalowego z zespołów, które nie tylko nieźle grają, ale też nieźle grają koncerty – to lubię.

2. Mysłowice nie powinny się w żadnym razie pozbywać tej imprezy. Ten festiwal ma sens w tym miejscu. Nawet peerelowskie zabudowania kąpieliska tu grają, miejscówka ma przyszłość i jeśli jeszcze ktoś mądry zlikwiduje ten idiotyczny zakaz łączenia sztuki z piciem i jedzeniem. Na fali ludycznego Monotonix proponuję, żeby sejm zajął się może lepiej ustawą, która zabraniałaby robić jednocześnie siku i to drugie, pożytku z takiego prawa byłoby równie mało, a rozdział czynności równie nienaturalny. A na tych opornych spośród radnych z Mysłowic proponuję wypróbować moustache revolution albo traktować muzyką grupy Health w ramach tortur.

3. Spiritualized – których kocham miłością bezwarunkową – z upływem czasu coraz bardziej upodabniają się do Pink Floyd. Ale z koncertu wyszedłem bardzo zadowolony.

4. W Mysłowicach wiedza o Sub Popie (powyżej zdjęcie z wystawy plakatów i okładek z tej wytwórni, które pokazywane są w miejscowym MCK) jest po tej edycji festiwalu prawdopodobnie większa niż w Seattle. Poważnie.

5. Wolałbym, żeby więcej osób nosiło takie kiecki jak Ania Brachaczek z BiFF, za to darowali sobie okulary tej samej marki noszone znacznie bardziej masowo. Przy okazji BiFF – koncert też był fajny.

6. Marissa Nadler zagrała głównie ostatnią płytę. Buuu. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart okazali się zaskakująco dobrym zespołem koncertowym, a nie jakimś paskudnym hajpem. Hura. Choć pewnie i tak ich nazwa już się na tym blogu nie pojawi, a nazwisko Marissy – i owszem.

7. W kategorii zespołów z “Crystal” w nazwie lepiej wypadli Crystal Antlers, chociaż wjeżdżałem na Offa raczej jako sympatyk Crystal Stilts. Gdzieś między Gdynią a Mysłowicami powinna zostać jeszcze rozegrana dogrywka między Crystal Antlers a Crystal Castles.

8. Nie widziałem The National, więc proszę nie pytać. Widziałem za to The Thermals, ale mimo to proszę nie pytać. Widziałem też muzyków Wooden Shjips, ale za to w strefie gastronomicznej, siedzieli sobie i pili piwo obok. Inni wykonawcy też paradowali wśród publiczności. Dla takich widoków lubię imprezy tej skali i bez wyższych gwiazdorskich sfer. Za to strefa gastronomiczna – tak przy okazji – była z całą pewnością najgorszą sferą festiwalu.

9. Byłem przez przypadek świadkiem jakichś bardzo ciekawych rozmów, o których nic nie mogę napisać, a nawet powiedzieć – i nie powiem, ale jeśli to jest to, o czym myślę, to szykuje nam się niezła sensacja. Wiem, też jestem zdania, że takie sformułowania jak to poprzednie zdanie powinny być zakazane. Ale potrzebny był mi dziewiąty punkt, żeby się to wszystko ładnie zamknęło na dziesięciu.

10. Potęga zjawiska, któremu poświęciłem poprzedni wpis na tym blogu, okazała się jeszcze większa niż myślałem. Ci wszyscy młodzi (młodsi ode mnie w większości, więc proszę mi wybaczyć to sformułowanie) ludzie naprawdę znali te wszystkie zespoły. Ja nie znałem ładnych paru, ale przygotuję się lepiej na kolejnego Offa, który odbyć się musi, a ja muszę na nim być.

4. ja mam zazwyczaj niskie oczekiwania, więc nie przeżyłam wielkich rozczarowań. po 22 wszelką ocenę zagłuszała myśl o obkurczaniu się mięśni.

5. dzień drugi, czyli dla mnie pierwszy. czyli piątek. nauczyłam się, że jeżdżenie stopem > jeżdżenie pociągiem, bo nie trzeba truchtać na dworzec stylem Korzeniowskiego, w dodatku bladym świtem typu ósma. Przed pierwszym koncertem (George Dorn Screams) zdążyliśmy z konieczności zwiedzić jeszcze Sosnowiec i Chorzów. Dżordży lubię, więc uznaję, że git, ale ocenę mogła zaburzyć błogość po pierwszym piwie.

Poza tym – ktoś polecił The Thermals, wytrzymałam minutę. Micachu bardzo-bardzo. Health pełna boskość. Między 21 a 22 włączyła się restlessness, więc zaliczyłam kawałek Marissy Nadler (bardzo ładnie, ale mi się znudziło), Lecha Janerki (bez niespodzianek chyba, czyli ok) oraz, o niespodzianko, ogródek piwny. Coś jak fast date.

Kanadyjska modelka z Fucked Up skutecznie podlizała się publiczności, więc feromony latały. Im niżej opadały spodnie wokalisty, tym bardziej kochał swoich fanów. Pierwszy raz tak dobrze się bawiłam, patrząc na grubego owłosionego faceta.

Na Spiritualized zamarzłam, ale dzielnie wytrwaliśmy do końca. Wrażenia w pkt.4

6. dzień trzeci, czyli dla mnie drugi, czyli sobota. Przyjechaliśmy do Mysłowic akurat na otwarcie wystawy Sub Popowych płyt i plakatów w MCK. Mam wrażenie, że ludzi było mniej niż kieliszków sikacza.

Postanowiliśmy zobaczyć wreszcie Muzykę Końca Lata. Świetny soundtrack do obcinania paznokci za drzewem – przepraszam wszystkich, którzy musieli to oglądać. Shake (your) banana zostało hasłem dnia.

Gaba Kulka jest zaskakująco dobra. Chwilami mi się podobało, chwilami mniej, ale głos jak dzwon.

Przerwa gastronomiczna i Crystal Stilts. Do naszej odległej miejscówki na kocu dolatywało tylko jakieś nędzne rzężenie, więc nie mam zdania. Zgodnie z opisem z festiwalowej książeczki, wykraczali poza znane formuły. Joy Division, huehue.

Handsome Furs. Tym razem nie zaspałam i bawiłam się świetnie, chociaż na scenie działo się dużo więcej niż na moim kawałku ubitej ziemi.

W efekcie usłyszałam tylko dwa ostatnie kawałki by Woody Alien. Kto układał program i dlaczego tak głupio. Następna szansa we wrześniu.

Crystal Antlers! Koledzy wyciągnęli mnie pod scenę, w związku z czym apel – chłopczyku w paski, niebrzydki byłeś, ale wisisz mi stopę. Jeszcze zabawniejsza była parka zaciekle atakująca barierkę, możliwe, że był to taniec. Poza tym najadłam się piachu, ale warto było.

Wooden Shjips lubię i złego słowa nie dam powiedzieć. Wtransiłam się. Git.

Jeremy Jay. Klasyczny wtf. Nawet ja tak nie fałszuję.

The National zaliczyłam trochę z rozpędu, bo do ultrasów nie należę. Szybko mi się znudziło, ale w tłumie było cieplej. Gdybym była silną fanką, być może uznałabym, że pięknie. Kolejny hajlajt to panowie we flanelowych koszulach, którym w głowie grał chyba jakiś nu-metal, sądząc po tym słodkim pogo. Ach, i cytat z przedkoncertowej wypowiedzi Stelmacha – “Dzięki, Rojas”. Urgh.

I już. Dzielnie pomknęłam na katowicki dworzec i do rana straszyłam czarnymi stopami. Mam wrażenie, że od trzech lat nie zmieniło się wiele, poza może ilością scen i zespołów. W przyszłym roku jadę z własną umywalką.

Not long ago, as part of a tribute to Radiohead’s OK Computer, Marissa Nadler chose to cover the bittersweet ‘No Surprises’. It was just one line into the song when she sang “A heart that’s full up like a landfill”, and there it was, the image of a wraith-like maiden in a red scarlet gown stumbling and wading through endless piles of discarded items from the last few hundred years. Finding and collecting but rarely stopping for long, combing her internal landscape of leather shoes, flowing silk ribbons, leftover lovers and bones; habitually a melancholic, loner figure like the poet Anne Sexton in ‘Her Kind’: “I have found the warm caves in the woods, filled them with skillets, carvings, shelves, closets, silks, innumerable goods; fixed the suppers for the worms and the elves: whining, rearranging the disaligned. A woman like that is misunderstood, I have been Her Kind.”

This maiden is not quite so misunderstood it seems. With each new album Marissa gains more and more subscribers to her dark and delicate songcraft. With her latest album Little Hells, she reaffirms her astonishing ability to slide back and forth in time, her songs like silken wormholes to the past. Wears The Trousers caught up with our old friend just before she headed out on a lengthy world tour. “Ask me something funny,” she said…

You recently revealed a surprising fondness for 1960s muscle cars. Would you ever buy one?

I would really be into getting an El Camino! I have always thought they were the hottest cars. It would have to be cherry red. Part of growing up in suburbia makes me romanticise antiquity. Everything is plastic now. The shapes and curves of old cars are so beautiful. Nevertheless, I know they aren’t streamlined for gas mileage and aren’t good for the environment. All jokes aside, I did mean El Camino in the song ‘River Of Dirt’ to have a dual meaning, both the car and the “path”.

Still, you should absolutely get one. You could race Neko Case!

I would totally be down to race Neko Case. I have a feeling she might win. With that fiery red mane, she strikes me as quite the racer. I love Neko Case by the way. My favourite song of her is ‘Deep Red Bells’. She is a big inspiration to me.

Did you ever have any majorly embarrassing moments when learning to drive?

Well. I luckily have the best father ever. He made me learn stick shift, which isn’t common in the US, really. In Europe everyone drives them, but not in the US. I am glad he did. It’s so much more fun to accelerate in a manual car. I did have a lot of trouble getting a hold of the clutch at first.

I was really a goody two shoes with a bit of a rebellious side that started around the age of 16, 17. I wasn’t in the cool crowd, so I usually just stayed at home painting and learning grunge rock songs on the electric guitar. I didn’t really have that many places to drive to. The movie theatre?

I did have a huge crush on this guitar teacher that I took a couple lessons from in the town next to me. I drove there and was an hour early for every lesson. He had a mullet, which was rare at the time because we were out of the ‘80s. Very tight acid washed jeans. I was trying to learn the solo to the Yes song ‘Mood For A Day’, Black Sabbath riffs, and Santana’s ‘Samba Pa Ti’ back then. It was Daddy’s Junky music in a strip mall.

You’ve said that you’d like to fall in love again in 2009. What does a guy have to do to win your heart?

I am attracted to people who are my match, artistically and intellectually. Looks are not as important to me as the aforementioned qualities, but the spark definitely needs to be there. I have a trainwreck history with matters of the heart. I suppose the only good thing about that is that it might be good for my songwriting.

I really don’t want anyone who is a fan of my music because they are idealising me rather than seeing the true self in person. It’s like that Groucho Marx quote.

Say you found a guy that you didn’t get a trainwreck vibe from. What would be your ideal first date?

Driving to Mexico or California in my El Camino and never coming back.

You’re pretty shy around cameras. I think you should make a video like Kate Bush’s ‘The Sensual World’. Can you imagine? It’s like a low-budget ‘Earth Song’. Go on. You’re tempted, surely?

I am very shy around cameras in some ways, unless I have artistic control of the result. If I were to direct my own video, I would do it. But yes. I have aspirations to make films someday where I could combine my fine art, music, etc. I absolutely love Kate Bush. She is the craziest!

It struck me that Little Hells is the first time you’ve been so prominent on your album sleeve, but you’re still not looking into the lens.

I think I looked at too many old paintings growing up and have mastered the pose of the old paintings. Let’s call me “floor eyes” from now on. I am hardly ever looking into the camera.

Have you ever turned down a potentially lucrative ad deal to maintain artistic integrity? I’d be surprised if not a single car manufacturer or mobile phone network has come knocking at your door!

I have never been offered an ad deal actually. I would far prefer my music to be used by a filmmaker I really respect (David Lynch, Tim Burton, Terrence Malick, Woody Allen, Gus Van Sant, Harmony Korine, etc.) to a car or cellphone commercial. I would like to add art to art, but people have to understand that in order for artists to continue to make music they have to do things to be able to afford recording, and to afford touring. So, I never look down on that and don’t think of an artist poorly when I hear them on a TV show or commercial. It’s cool that independent artists are getting their music out there, in my opinion, as opposed to hearing the same mainstream chart-topping artists over and over again.

Obviously, there are certain things I would never do. I would never allow a song of mine to be used in a way that contrasted with my political or spiritual beliefs. And I would prefer not to embrace commercialism. However, if it helps to afford the ability to record my next album on tape in a great studio with great microphones, and to pay my band what they deserve, then it’s actually enabling artistic integrity. Or I could do it on GarageBand. There is reality and then there is idealism.

Bohemian idealism only goes so far when they are shutting your credit cards off and you’re getting evicted, you know? When you have to sell your guitars to eat, you can’t write songs anymore. Then you can’t make records. I don’t have a problem with Cat Power covering that David Bowie song on that Lincoln car ad. It was, to me, only funny when that beautiful Devendra Banhart song was used in a cheese commercial in the UK. But, you know, whatever! I didn’t have a problem with it. Good for him! Chan sounds good. I would rather hear that than some tin-headed teenybopper on the occasion I am watching car commercials. Which I do all the time.

Obviously, as I said, there are certain things I would never do, like the NRA, the GOP, the KKK, etc. (I could go on and on). That is what you call compromising your artistic integrity.

You’ve been working as a nanny the last few years. How was that?

Well, recently I had to stop the nanny job because I had to gear up to go on tour. I set them up with a really good friend of mine who is a better nanny, a better cook. They love him. I totally adore those kids.

Before I left, since this is Wears The Trousers I should say I took the girls down and showed them how to properly wrap guitar cords and we labelled them properly. I had their stepfather buy them an interface and some good condenser mics. They are both in bands. I still keep in touch with the family quite a bit. They are the best. Five kids, all artists and/or musicians.

Do you hope to have kids of your own?

Yes. I definitely want kids. I want to move away and have a couple of them and name them cruel New Agey names like Isis and River. Maybe I will be nice and name my son Bob.

You are obviously pretty happy with having Ballads Of Living & Dying reissued on vinyl. On a personal level, what advantages does vinyl have for you?

It’s the object. They are big and beautiful. You can hang them on your walls. MP3s sound like tin cans. It’s a shame an entire generation is growing up with them. One of the girls I nannied for got a record player. I got her Joni Mitchell’s Hejira (which I think is a highly underrated album) and a bunch of other records. It was like that scene from ‘Almost Famous’.

It strikes me that Little Hells has the lowest body count of your albums to date. Do you think the balance has swung back in favour of ballads of living rather than Songs III’s many ballads of dying?

Hilarious question. I think so. I have so much inspiration these days. I did just write a song called ‘Dead Wives Club’. But lately I have been writing tonnes of songs, and they are all about situations and about living people.

Speaking of ‘Dead Wives Club’, when did you learn to play the banjo?

I’ve been playing the banjo for about as long as I have played the guitar. I don’t claw hammer, I play it like a guitar. I aspire to really get excellent at it.

You’ve hinted at the new album having a narrative arc and I wondered whether you could elaborate a bit more on that?

I see the protagonist, which may or may not be me, in different phases of her life. She quantum leaps through time and space. In each song the situation has a different outcome. Similarly to that movie ‘Sliding Doors’, in each song one mistake or decision leads to the outcome. There is always an outcome in my songs. It is the same woman in each song, who was Mary, Mayflower May, etc. In ‘Heart Paper Lover’, she is an old crone. In ‘Mary Come Alive’ she is in her thirties, and that is a conversation between her and her husband. ‘Ghosts & Lovers’ takes place in the present tense. ‘Mistress’ occurs in the present tense. In ‘River Of Dirt’, the protagonist is older and looking back on the fantastic idealism of her youth versus the brutal reality that her life has become.

So is the Silvia in ‘The Whole Is Wide’ the same Silvia as on the last record?

I am not sure yet.

It’s a concept album then, sort of?

I thought about it as a loosely based concept album. I had just read Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. I was thinking about the end of a lot of things. Flowers, both dead and alive, are one image that links almost every song together. The life cycle of the protagonist often mirrors the life cycle of the flowers in the songs.

You’ve mentioned going into the studio to record Little Hells with a bunch of “sonic references”. Care to elaborate?

‘Twin Peaks’, The Carter Family, The Beach Boys, Tammy Wynette, ‘Edward Scissorhands’, Dusty In Memphis, Pink Floyd, Elliott Smith…I could go on and on.

A lot of the songs seem to have a definite country influence, especially with Farmer Dave’s lapsteel.

Yes. I wanted to get back to my roots. Myles Baer, Dave Scher and I all added to the guitar songs. Myles used slide, volume pedals, e-bow. Dave plays lapsteel. I play acoustic and electric, mostly picking. Next record I will rip out some Sabbath riffs.

Amazing, do! I hear you wrote another 15 songs for Little Hells that didn’t make the final tracklist. Will we hear them anytime soon? Perhaps another CD-R like Ivy & The Clovers?

Maybe. We will see. I have so many new ones. Editing is really important. I think a lot of the parts of the songs that didn’t make the cut are going to appear in new songs as melodies.

Would you consider releasing a collection of alternative versions of the songs that did make the album, to offer insight into the process you went through?

I think I am going to put some of the demos online somehow.

You’ve already hinted to me about the elusive “metal version” of ‘Heart Paper Lover’ – can you provide more details? Did it take you back to your grunge days? It’s interesting to think of you being really into bands like The Frogs!

I just discovered The Frogs. They are hilarious. When you see my new band, you are going to be completely shocked. It’s a BAND!!! It’s so much fun to play with a band; I was getting very lonely on the road. The metal version of ‘Heart Paper Lover’…I have a feeling you may be hearing it soon. I will play a good part of the sets each night on tour solo, and am bringing the banjo too.

Did any of the other songs go through vastly different arrangements to what we hear on the finished album?

Yes. ‘Heart Paper Lover’ was recorded on the Wurlitzer on the last day of mixing. ‘Mary Come Alive’ changed enormously. ‘River Of Dirt’ changed quite a bit as well. The addition of Simone Pace’s drumming really transformed some of the songs into something new. That was very exciting.

‘Mary Come Alive’ is all kinds of awesome. Do you see yourself pursuing that sort of full, rhythmical, percussive sound more in future?

Thank you. It’s my favourite on the record because of how different it is from my other stuff. Yes. I think my music is going to keep evolving and changing. I have this great new drummer, Ben McConnell, who has played in lots of great bands. He is really creative and knows how to loop. I am starting to discover the wonders of beats.

It’s also a bit of a potential feminist pseudo-anthem. What do you think about that?

Yeah. I hear that. I think a lot of my songs are kind of post-feminist. I mean, in ‘Diamond Heart’ – “I had a man in every town and I thought of you each time I tore off my gown…But I look for you in the diamond trees, and the bars I’m always frequenting” – I am saying it’s okay to need and want a man. In ‘The Whole Is Wide’ – “Oh, what am I to do, without a man to see me through?” – I am not intentionally throwing the feminist movement back. In my opinion it’s okay to wear dresses and lipstick and write about wanting a man. Especially if you hold your own as a guitar player.

You laughed when we described ‘Rosary’ as “erotic” in our Little Hells preview. It’s really a very sad song. What’s the inspiration behind it?

I was sad as hell when I wrote that song. It’s about loneliness. The protagonist I described earlier is definitely an old crone in that song.

You told me before that you’ve always loved the circus. Did you try out a sort of carnival arrangement of any of the songs?

‘Loner’ sounds to me like one hell of a circus of the mind.

You’ve mentioned a couple of things to me that you might go back and change if you could do the record over. Do you always feel that way about a song or two on every album?

Always. That’s art though. I can’t take it back once it’s out there. I can’t fix it.

You said you had some nerves about how this album would be received but we critics seem to love it. Has this given you a confidence boost to carry on moving away from the simpler guitar-and-voice constructs of your earlier albums?

Yes. Totally.

When Wears The Trousers interviewed Marissa Nadler for our issue 7 feature, we asked her whether her music was becoming a bit less deathly considering that her newest release Little Hells had a noticeably lower body count than previous albums, which she thought was pretty funny. “Lately I have been writing tonnes of songs, and they are all about situations and about living people,” she reassured us. A few months later we started hearing of a new romantic element to Marissa’s latest compositions, and rumours that the general feel of the next record might in fact be more lovestruck than lovelorn.

Over the last week or so, followers of Marissa on Twitter have been treated to an exclusive listen to a demo of a new song with the working title ‘Love Song 2′, so we thought we’d pass it on to the rest of you. All the hallmarks of Marissa’s unique sound are there, even in this simple home recording, with beautifully finger-picked acoustic guitar and that spectral, timeless voice, but it’s easy to imagine how it might come alive with a full band studio treatment if it ever gets one. The lyrics tell of spiritually uplifting visits to old burial grounds and New England towns with a man the narrator loves “like I was your darling wife”. But it’s not all sweet nothings. It gets a bit existentialist towards the end as Marissa sings (I think), “Farewell then world, I’ve had enough of thee / and now I’m careless, wilt thou save me?” – all in all, a very promising glimpse at what might be to come.
