I am the first to admit it.  I am a picky mother when it comes to choosing models.  On average I probably get 20-30 guys a week that want to be Mega Muscle Models. In 2008, we only brought on 4 new guys and in 2009, we only added 6 more – it’s a very selective process

Why am I so picky?  The reality is that we invest a lot of time and money in a model and we want to make sure that investment is going to pay off.  Of course the first decision gets made based on the model’s “look”.  Does he have visible abs, a striking face, look like he knows how to groom for modeling.  For me personally, I have a hair issue.  I like a good head of hair.

After that, through a series of emails, we learn a bit more about a potential model.  What are his nudity limitations.  Is he comfortable with gay fans.  Does he have experience modeling.  What are his goals.  It always amazes me how many guys just want to be on the cover of a fitness magazine.  This is probably THE WORST paying job a fitness model can get and the publicity lasts about a nanosecond.   It is also one of the easiest jobs to get.

Even after we sign a guy, it is no guarantee that things will work out.  Sometimes the model only supplies me with heavily Photoshopped images so when he shows up to our first shoot he looks 15 years older than I was expecting.  Other times guys lie about their height – an inch or two is no biggie but five or six gets annoying.  The most important thing to me is attitude.  I can fix bad straight guy hair or teach a guy to manscape.  I can clear up acne or help a guy tone up.  But if a guy is an asshole, well that is just something that I can’t fix and won’t even take the time to try.  I had one model who frankly, was a total douche bag.  I tried and tried to make it work out because he really did have a great look but when it came down to it, his attitude just didn’t jive with the rest of the team here at Mega Muscle.  Luckily, the DB’s are few and far between and most of the guys we take on are not only gorgeous on the outside, they are amazing people!

Brian Woodi that is!  Brian has been a model with MegaMuscle.com now for almost two years and with the launch of his newest title Brian Woodi: Behind the Scenes as well as his participation in the recent Photo Expo in Palm Springs – he is quickly becoming one of my most sought after models.  I think it’s obvious why.  Putting the fact that Woodi just oozes sexuality in all of his photos – he’s a fun motherfucker to hang out with!

Last month in Palm Springs, my boy from Napa ended up shooting with my man from San Francisco, Mark Jenkins.  Why we waited until  were all in Palm Springs to shoot I still haven’t quite figured out but maybe it was just their time because the shots are sexy, seductive and the best of what these two amazing talents have to offer!  I can’t wait to get them together again up here in the city to see what comes from them next!

One of my favorite things about the Mega Muscle events is getting to see hot guys turn into models.  One such example happened last week at the Mega Muscle Expo in Palm Springs when first time, never-ever modeled Trace Wray was paired up with photographer extraordinaire Mark Jenkins.  Trace contacted me about six weeks ago wanting to break into modeling.  With just his web cam photos that he had taken that day for me to make a decision, something in my gut said this guy was special.

So I took a chance and brought Trace to work with us in Palm Springs.  Man, am I glad I did!  His very first shoot was with Mark and you would think based on these shots that he had been doing this for years.  I want to welcome Trace to Team Mega Muscle and send out a very special thanks to Mark Jenkins for being gentle when he busted Trace’s model cherry.

Inspirerende street art fra Mark Jenkins – ovenfor eksempel fra Malmö.

We are used to the paint and canvas art, acknowledge street art, recognize what is design..but when you see an installation such as a person sleeping on a bed in the middle of the road, what can you do but stare and wonder?

Mark Jenkins is an American artist known for his outdoor street installations which he creates using packing tape, some of which may cause a bit of controversy, but I think his work is pretty amazing! He has also shown in indoor galleries in America, Europe, Japan and Brazil and has his website www.xmarkjenkinsx.com and another one www.tapesculpture.org which teaches people his tape casting process, visit his site and watch the video ‘How babies are made’, its pretty cool!

Mark Jenkins, from Virginia, is known mainly for his installations involving packing tape; which he performs across the US as well as Europe, Japan and Brazil. On the current form of art, specifically that in the street, in contrast to more conventional forms, he states : “As for the old bronzes, I really don’t see them as part of what’s going on in the dialogue unless addressed by a new intervention.”

If yo don’t know by now that the Mega Muscle Photography Expo is taking place in Palm Springs in October – well, you’ve been very busy looking at the photos but not reading the text.  While the Expo itself is only open to paying photographers, we have decided to offer an event that is open to the public!

On Saturday, October 10th, Mega Muscle in cooperation with Sweat Under Gear and Hunters Night Club will be presenting MEGA MUSCLE, the night – featuring many of your favorite Mega Muscle guys!  All the guys attending will be performing live at their ONLY scheduled Southern California appearance.  In addition, Sweat Under Gear will be offering free giveaways of their amazing underwear (seriously if you haven’t ever tried it on – get some today, it cradles your boys in comfort), their will be Mega Muscle products for sale as well as given away as prizes, and Hunters is offering drink specials all night long!

This party is more than just hot guys and free giveaways!  It is also going to be the launch party for NEW DVDs from Lucas Walker, Eric Turner and Brian Woodi!  All of these videos plus many more will be shown on the giant flat-screens in the video bar at Hunters.

Those of you that follow the blog with any regularity know that we are gearing up for the Mega Muscle Photography Expo in Palm Springs next month.  For those of you that do not know what this is, it is an opportunity for photographers from around the globe to work one on one with the amazing models of Mega Muscle.  We set up the locations, provide lighting, schedule one on one sessions with each model, and then also provide unique photography opportunities depending on the city we are producing in.

I got into producing the photography expos when I was approached by several photographers who had been attending photography workshops produced by another company and they were less than impressed with the talent and the organization.  I took this on as I do most projects, with the intent of making it the best possible event I could make it!

Our very first event was held in Las Vegas in June.  I decided to bring the top guys we were working with plus a couple of new faces that I thought had a lot of potential.  We had some last minute changes but our final lineup of models was Dave Nathan, Yvan Cournoyer, Billy Freda, Ryan Jaeger, Lance LaMar, David Fox and an unknown model at the time, Derrick Davenport.  We rented an estate in an older part of Las Vegas, a home that used to belong to the legendary Frank Sinatra.  It was pretty amazing – when you walked through the front doors, you were greeted by a swimming pool in the middle of the living room!

In addition to the Sinatra estate, we also rented studio space and had guys shooting fitness stuff at Gold’s Gym.  The event was three days and on the last day we were to shoot out at Lake Mead but I realized quickly that it was way to hot to head out to the middle of the desert so at the last minute, we were able to substitute the Blue Moon Resort as a fourth location and it turned out perfectly!

The best thing about this weekend, the reason I keep producing these events, was the feeling of friendship that developed between the models, the photographers and my crew.  On the Saturday evening of the event, Dave Nathan, who in addition to be a model and championship bodybuilder is an amazing chef, cooked up one of the best meals I have EVER eaten.

Of course, I think the best thing that came out of the weekend were the amazing photos.  I definitely saw all of the photographers who attended have their talents pushed and their creativity inspired.  At this and all of the events we have produced, I have seen many photographers learn to use new types of lights.  I have witnessed the evolution of a photographer who attended our very first event and every subsequent one – his talent and confidence have blossomed!

And it has been great for the models.  Derrick as many of you know, went from being an unknown model at this event to Playgirl’s Man of the Year the following year.  It is a fantastic opportunity to test new models, and for them to work with a variety of personalities.

I am so looking forward to this year’s event.  Fortunately we have sold most of the spaces we have available but if it is something you would be into, let us know as we can always try and squeeze someone in!  If you are not a photographer but would still like to see what Mega Muscle is all about, we are hosting a party at a local night club in Palm Springs on October 10th.  Come join us and get a chance to meet your favorite models in person!
