Mark Knopfler

Dr. Jim went shopping the other day for some necessities for the trip to New Orleans, including a br

Dr. Jim went shopping the other day for some necessities for the trip to New Orleans, including a brand new laptop bag. Of course, I just happened to be passing by the record shop. I was assaulted, forced into the shop and made to buy half a dozen CDs. I did not do this intentionally, but fortunately I was forced to buy some music I like. My plan to save my money is still on track…

I haven’t heard them all yet since I’ve been busy, but I’m working on it.

Here is what I got:

B.B. King One Kind Favor

Click to go to BBK's site with further links to itunes, etc.

I don’t have much of B.B. King’s music but I’ve always like it. He seems like such a natural, easy-going guy, and he is a great musician. Here is a live version (after lots of friendly banter, of the tune that opens One Kind Favor, “See that my grave is kept clean”.

Mark Knopfler Get Lucky

One of my favourite guitar players of all time. I like Dire Straits, especially the first two albums (Brothers in Arms is very good, but I’ve heard the hits from it so many times I can’t bring myself to play it any more), and all of Knopfler’s solo albums I’ve heard have been excellent. There are a few I haven’t got yet. I lost my copy of the Notting Hill Billies Missing and Presumed Having a Good Time, and I can’t find a new copy anywhere.

The Best of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (Millennium Collection).

All sorts of great stuff from way back, for only $7.00.
I first heard J. J. Cale’s Troubadour in high school and it is still on my top 10 albums. Grasshopper is pretty high on the list, too. I have four Norah Jones albums and I like them but I don’t listen to them as often as other singers. The album she did with a crew called the Little Willies is a great countryish time. She has a great, mellow voice and she doesn’t over-sing things. The Fall sounds pretty good, and it was a good price too, considering there is an extra bonus 6 tune live CD called Live at the Living Room included in it. If you are into free, go to National Public Radio and listen to The Fall for free.

Well it took me long enough to get to the point where I could realize how great this cat is. Just like Sly Stone I was told by many reputable sources that Chet Atkins was a great player and just like Sly Stone I left it for another day. Well let’s be honest here. The Beatles LOVED him, Mark Knopfler loves him and he just so happens to have some great songs.

Take a listen and have a great week my friends. ArmsUp News here tomorrow.

Mr. Brown is a favorite of ours and quite an accomplished fellow with success as a chef, cinematographer, author, and actor to his credit. And, after graduating from the University Of Georgia, Brown pursued a career in cinematography and was the director of photography on the music video for R.E.M.’s The One I Love.

However, aside from his resemblance to actual one-hit wonder Thomas Dolby, it appears that Alton has never pursued any musical endeavors of his own. So, no, he is not a one-hit wonder.

However, the band Guadalcanal Diary, who were fellow Georgians and contemporaries of R.E.M., might qualify as one-hit wonders. Though they never were a mainstream act, Guadalcanal Diary had a modicum of success with college audiences in the mid- to late- ’80s and are best remembered for the quirky and engaging Watusi Rodeo.

Is Mark Knopfler obsessed with finding a cure for baldness?
(mark knopfler hair loss)

Yes, the former leader of Dire Straits is follically challenged. However, he is also one of the wealthiest musicians in the UK, so, if he wanted, he could afford to outfit himself with the most extravagant toupee in the history of man.

As he hasn’t done so, I would have to say that, no, Knopfler suffers from no vanity regarding his diminishing hairline. If he does wish to find the cure for hair loss, I suggest he get in contact as I could use an investor.

Has Kate Bush ever attacked the paparazzi?
(kate bush attacks paparazzi)

I’ve followed Kate Bush’s career since she broke through in the States with Hounds Of Love and I own most of her catalog. I know that Kate’s father was a physician, she comes from a musical family, she’s studied dance, she’s quite reclusive, and she’s British.

None of these things add up to a profile of someone that would physically manhandle photographers. She simply seems too refined for such behavior (or, behaviour).

(though it is amusing to imagine her having a snootful of brandy following Sunday dinner and letting the expletives fly)

I think this reader has Kate confused with another eccentric female artist, this one from Iceland.

What kind of earrings did David Bowie wear?
(what kind of earring did david bowie wear)

There’s no debating that David Bowie has been one of the most fashion-conscious artist in the annals of rock. He’s donned dresses, leather jackets, Italian suits, and indescribable garb as Ziggy Stardust.

However, a quick study of photographic evidence reveals that his ears have usually been unadorned. In the few pictures in which he does have earrings, it appears that the Thin White Duke opts for a single, ring-sized, silver hoop – tasteful, classy, and restrained.

Defend the rights our soldiers died for -

Elizabeth James,

North Shore News

Published: Wednesday, November 04, 2009

The Torah teaches: ‘Justice, justice, you shall pursue’

Deuteronomy 16:20

Oy vey!

Why should North Shore readers get uptight about the tribulations of a 65-year-old Montreal taxi driver who is headed to court and to the Human Rights Commission, because he refuses to pay $1,400 in municipal fines?

Fair question, especially when we discover that he has ignored not one but six fines, the first of which dates back three years or more.

He has no-one to blame but himself, right?

We should care because, time and again, we have asked our soldiers to go to war to defend the Canadian and Quebec Charter rights of citizens to enjoy freedom of expression and of religion. Specific to this story, Canadian soldiers fought, and are still fighting and dying, to protect the rights of people like Arieh Perecowicz — a Canadian of the Jewish faith — should he wish to enjoy small mementoes of his family and faith in his workplace. Nothing in either charter — documents superior to those of bureaucratic bylaws — bans anyone from doing so.

The workplace Arieh speaks of just happens to be the taxi he drives around Montreal for 15 hours of the day.

It’s a case of common-sense justice.

To set the stage:

Arieh has been driving cab in Montreal since 1966; no troubles, no passenger complaints and, so far as I can discover, no tickets.

For most of those 43 years, he has carried with him two mezuzahs — tiny parchment prayers for a safe journey common to his faith. They are fixed to the frame between the front and back seats of the cab. He also carries photos of his wife and son, a blue and white Star of David, a Remembrance Day poppy and another tiny flag — the red and white Maple Leaf. These are the symbols of everything that makes Arieh the man he was, is, and wishes to be.

He treasures the symbol of Canada — a country that prides itself on being tolerant to all; a country that professes its belief in freedom of speech and religion and that, for one day every November, honours the veterans of past and present wars by wearing the poppy in its collective lapel.

How ironic, then, that this cabbie must go before a court and a tribunal to defend those rights all over again — in a province, no less, that has cost us dearly in its own constitutional struggles to be unique above all others in Canada.

This is because 30 years along Arieh’s travels, a municipal agency, the Bureau du Taxi, was established to administer the bylaws that cover licensing and safe operation of city taxicabs — and administer they did.

One of the city bylaws states: Every driver must ensure that the interior of the taxi is clean, remove papers and litter, empty ashtrays, and leave no object or inscription that is not required for the taxi to be in service or that is not provided for in this bylaw.

The loopholes for an officer’s subjective opinion are large enough to drive a bylaw van through; but this cabbie knew his taxi and his 43-year record were clean. He had been inspected on numerous occasions by both Transport Quebec officers and Bureau inspectors and passed with flying colours.

Arieh had no reason to worry about regulations until, in December 2006, the first of the tickets arrived — less than a week after he and several other drivers appeared on television to complain that the Bureau was failing to regulate unlicensed, out-of-city cab companies. Such a coincidence.

But who among us believes in the coincidences of government?

Why is it that, for example, drivers of Greek descent who display photos of the Virgin Mary, or others who hang rosary beads near their rear view mirror have received no tickets?

Arieh is in no position to hire a lawyer. So, after his court date has been set back six months to April 2010, Arieh must now defend himself against the power of Montreal bylaw officers, who have declared he has no right to be overt in the expression of his beliefs.

As Arieh explained in a weekend radio interview with CKNW host, Roy Green, “I am not especially religious; these tokens are just the stuff most of us have on our desks or pin to the cork-boards at work because they make our world a more pleasant place.

“None of my passengers has ever complained. Not about my driving; not about the condition or safety of my cab, and certainly not about my tokens.”

So to answer the question posed at the beginning of this story: Whether or not we are “especially religious,” for the sake of our country, and to honour the soldiers who defend it, we need to care; for inasmuch as it has been done unto Arieh Perecowicz, it has been done unto us all.

This column is in honour of all who have served, and are serving, in Canadian Forces around the world to defend the values we hold dear. It is also to offer condolences to the families of the 133 Canadian soldiers who have died in Afghanistan — most recently, Lt. Justin Garrett Boyes, 26 and Sapper Steven Marshall of Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry, both of whom lost their lives to IEDs within days of their deployment in October.

The soundtrack is my take on Dire Straits’ “On every street”. the guitar used on that track was a Fender Telesonic, which I should never have sold…
