BIRTHDAY

Andrew Carnegie (1835), Eddie Shore (1902), Joe DiMaggio (1914), Percy Sledge (1941), Ben Stein (1944), John Larroquette (1947), Amy Grant (1960), John F.
STANDPOINT

One of my greatest friends is Joe. I’ve mentioned him before. He’s someone special.

And he’s also kind of this blog’s watchdog. When I miss a day (or three), or post something subpar, Joe’s the first one to let me know, whether through a scathing comment on a particular post, a verbal tirade on GMail chat, or an obscenity-laden phone call. Most of these responses center on his annoyance with the fact I call this the daily euneJeune, and I’m not exactly stringent about the whole “daily” thing.

I love it. Because it comes from Joe and he’s one of the few people out there in the world who knows me very well, and wants to be my friend anyway.

Also, Joe and I have two things in common: (a) We’re able to drink more alcohol than any two people at any bar anywhere, and (b) We’re most likely the funniest people you’ll ever meet. And, no, the alcohol has nothing to do with why we think we’re a goddam riot. Although it doesn’t hurt.

In any case, Joe and I have this routine of exchanging late night texts, mainly because each of us know the other is most likely awake and not sober. 99% of the texts’ subject material has to do with movie quotes. And of that 99%, probably 98% deal directly with the obscure black comedy, Clifford, starring Charles Grodin and Martin Short.

As a tribute to my friend Joe, I offer the following video clip.

QUOTATION

I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can play together all night. → Bill Watterson

TUNE

I’ve always loved the lyrics and music of Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” It came on yesterday at the perfect time. And, so, I now share it with you.

GALLIMAUFRY

→ As we all knew it would, Antarctica has declared war on New Zealand. Tired of living in the shadow of its more “tourist-friendly” neighbor, the frozen wasteland has launched hundreds of icebergs in a desperate attempt to get some headlines. Some experts are saying it’s not an attack at all and probably has something to do with global warming. Other experts are saying there’s too much ice in Antarctica and it’s natural to jettison some of the dead weight. The same experts also suggested people get off global warming’s back. However, all the experts agree the iceberg assault will have little effect on New Zealand, prompting a disheartened Antarctica to go back to the drawing board.

→ Finally, MTV makes a show I would actually watch – about a squad of young Italian summertime renters at the Jersey shore – cleverly titled “Jersey Shore,” and wouldn’t you know it? There’s a group of Italian-Americans that wants to block it. Of course.

→ No new posts until Monday. What with the holiday and all. Also, be careful out there tonight. It’s the biggest bar night of the year. And drunk idiots make it suck pretty hard. Just take the following advice: Make sure to drive fast and take chances. OK. It’s not really advice.

I really haven’t been up to snuff this week. Maybe it’s the seriously cold weather finally rolling in (my fingers hurt to type!), or the fact that I’m anxious about moving.
In any fashion…
this week was brought to you by:

Metallica’s cover of Nick Cave’s “Loverman” (which I like better than the original-my guilty pleasure)

The Dead Weather’s “So Far From Your Weapon.” Geez - could Alison Mosshart be anymore badass?

Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” This video is from SESAME STREET. So cool:

Queens of the Stone Age performing ”Hanging Tree.” I want Mark Lanegan and Tom Waits to sing me bedtime stories.

and lastly, Tom Waits’ “Green Grass”

This is all I listened to this last week.

Maybe it would improve my mood to listen to something a bit more uptempo. What do you suggest? I’m always up for a Karen O Dance Party!

Well, this week’s iTunes Free Single of the Week certainly gives you your money’s worth (figuratively speaking) with a running time coming in at just over eight minutes. This country tinged, Neil Young-esque track is oddly labelled as being “electronic” in iTunes’ genre sorting, but the song itself is on the complete opposite end of the musical spectrum. It’s only labelled as electronic because, rather than being a recording by a band, it is the work of a pair of producers, namely Rich Machin and Ian Glover, under the title Soulsavers.

With the featured addition of guest vocalist Mark Lanegan, formally of Screaming Trees, Soulsavers have produced a song that promises a lot, through sound alone, but doesn’t quite deliver. There is a slight build up at the beginning of the song, but rather than going anywhere, the song just sits on the level it got to in the first minute and sits there. The guitar solo, which could be expected to be the climax of many songs, comes four and a half minutes into the song, and the preceding time was filled with wailing electric guitar under the vocals anyway. As such, the solo just feels like more of the same in this song.

Is it worth downloading? I’d say yes. Mark Lanegan’s smooth vocals lend very well to this chilled out, southern rock lament. Everything else seems designed to tug on the heartstrings, and while the arrangement doesn’t help this by letting the song get a little stale towards the end, it does still have a bit of an emotional hit. At almost eight minutes, it could easily be a bit of a slog to get through. This isn’t really true, as despite its length, ‘Some Misunderstanding’ isn’t a song that will bore you. You may however forget what song you are listening to about half way through, but for this reviewer at least, that doesn’t stop it from being a welcome addition to the shuffle rotation.

6.5/10

I’m not going to go into the fact that just in time for the holidays Nirvana’s Bleach has been remastered and a DVD is available for their Live at Reading show. The rock magazine Kerrang placed this show as one of the “100 shows that shook the world.” There is a really good commentary in Newsweek on these two releases, both the live at Reading show from Universal Music Group (Geffen) and Bleach from Sub Pop. I’ll be featuring two tracks from Nirvana tonight from these.

Here’s a famous clip from the festival:

Das britische Electro/TripHop Duo Soulsavers begründete auf “It’s not how far you fall, it’s the way you land” die Zusammenarbeit mit Mark Lanegan, welcher früher unter anderem Sänger der Screaming Trees und Mitglied der Queens of the Stone Age war.

Im Vergleich zum Vorgänger “Tough guys don’t dance” klingt “It’s not how far you fall…” weniger elektronisch, was sicher auch an Mark Lanegan – welcher ja auch mehrere Soloalben, welche in die Blues/Folk sparte gehen, veröffentlichte – liegt.

Für “It’s not how far you fall, it’s the way you land” braucht man anfangs sicherlich etwas Überwindung.

It’s a world of music at my fingertips; it’s the ability to find that song haunting your every thought in seconds. And it’s all above board and legal and lovely.

In an attempt to get more involved with Spotify I’ve decided to offer y’all a taste of what I’m listening to this weather in the form of an occasional playlist.
I’ll link every song listed below to somewhere else you can listen to it, if that helps.

Released: 2009
Label: V2
Genre: Trip Hop

Mal echt jetzt. Also einfach Klappe halten und eintauchen:

Gewohnt vielseitig geht’s weiter. Es gibt Pianoballaden (“You will miss me…”, oder das einsichtige “Can’t Catch the Train”), die Gospelchöre (“Shadow Falls”), ein Gitarrensolo (“Some Misunderstanding”) und sogar Matrix-ähnliche gruselige Geräuschkulissen (“Rolling Sky”).

Who cares?

Inutile girarci intorno: se nel precedente It’s Not

Eh, signori Soulsavers? Perché ok, i languori semi gospel di All The Way Down e gli struggimenti da fazzoletto sventolato sui binari di Can’t Catch The Train vanno benissimo, ma sono cose già sentite e strasentite.

It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s the Way You Land (2007).

Membre des groupes Screaming Trees et Queens of the Stone Age.

Against my will to these sad shores
An unknown force has drawn me
Bound unto a future shaped by ancestors before me
Day on day I march the beat to someone else’s drum
I have searched far foreign lands there’s nowhere left to run

Impending storm rise up rise up
Oh demons I shall shame you!
Look down the barrel of my gun and one by one I’ll name you
Day on day my brothers leave go marching off to war
Yet we never understand for what we’re fighting for

Elle, l’ange gardien porteur d’espoir :

Ubi caritas et amor
Ubi caritas

I’m not saying I love you
I won’t say I’ll be true
there’s a crimson bird flying
when I go down on you

I have travelled the world around
Wondered far from home
Sailed the ocean in foreign skies
Still further to go
Back into my babies arms
From this world of woe
That was such a long long time ago

Broken hearts, broken minds and broken souls are the constant themes of Soulsavers second album Broken. The dark side is explored and despairs are aired on what is a dense and (for want of a better word) ‘gothic’ album.

Helmed by the English duo of Rich Machin and Ian Glover it features an enviable line-up of musicians who have all made names for themselves with music on the moodier and slightly twisted side of the tracks.

The scene setting instrumental The Seventh Proof creates a lonely and barren introduction to the album. It invokes loneliness, grief and a foreboding sense of ominous things to come. Death Bells adds a krautrock sense of motion with feeding-back guitars and a gritty crunch. Mark Lanegan’s weather beaten voice is instantly recognisable and he is essentially the third member of the band, contributing his vocals to all but two of the non-instrumental songs on the album.

Alongside Lanegan is a stellar lineup of additional vocalists. Gibby Haynes, Mike Patton, Richard Hawley and Jason Pierce all add their own feel to the album with Patton being the most successful on Unbalanced Pieces. The two of them build a brooding mood that is similar to The Twilight Singers and Nick Cave in its creeping intensity.

You Will Miss Me When I Burn is a Will Oldham written song that stands out as the most direct and moving moment on Broken. Oldham pens weighty lines like ‘When you have no-one, no-one can hurt you’ and adds his macabre touch to the twisted love song. The minimal instrumentation also makes this a stark rendition which sets it aside from the other denser songs on the album.

The song also marks the first time we hear the voice of Sydney singer Red Ghost (Rosa Agostino) who kept sending Soulsavers demos of her songs and ended up working with them on the record. She takes the lead on Praying Ground and By My Side and the PJ Harvey sense of longing in her voice lends itself perfectly to the albums mood.

Machin and Glover have added more guitars to their electronic landscape on this record and it improves the emotional connection to the music. Strings, vinyl crackles and other mood enhancers are all utilised to conjure up the dark and almost jazz noir feeling.

One issue with making music of this type is maintaining the attention of the listener. At an hour long it does struggle to engage fully over its thirteen songs. Its heavy and measured footsteps will be slow going for many and it may take a back seat as background music for those that don’t have the patience for its drift and weight.

Lanegan is the star attraction of Broken and without him it would wallow in its own despair. He provides the strength and backbone amongst the misery. Broken also serves to introduce Red Ghost to a wider audience which is a good thing for her and us. This album won’t make end of year lists but when the mood calls for some late night introspection and soul searching this could be just the thing to take you there.
