From the ever-illuminating Overthinking It and contributor Mark Lee: The Hubbert Peak Theory of Rock

From the ever-illuminating Overthinking It and contributor Mark Lee:

The Hubbert Peak Theory of Rock, or, Why We’re All Out of Good Songs

Many rock purists and music snobs (myself included) often lament the quality of most modern pop/rock music. “Music these days is so trite and derivative,” they say. “It’s just been downhill since the 60’s and 70’s. Those were the days.”

A few years ago, Rolling Stone magazine added fuel to the music snobbery fire with its “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list. Anyone casually paging through the list would notice that the bulk of the list was comprised of songs from the 60’s and 70’s, just like the music snobs always say.

I, however, wasn’t content with the casual analysis. So I punched the list into Excel, crunched some numbers, and found an interesting parallel between the decline of rock music quality and, of all things, the decline in US oil discovery and production:

Read the analysis here.

As we oil up our turntables and dust off the vinyls, we might smile a silent smile in honor of that most marvelous of the Marx Brothers, Harpo: Adolph (later known as Arthur, then as Harpo) Marx was born on this date in 1888 in New York City.

戴阳天 Dai Yang Tian and 白薇秀 Joanne Peh are confirmed as leading male and female stars for the Chinese

戴阳天 Dai Yang Tian and 白薇秀 Joanne Peh are confirmed as leading male and female stars for the Chinese New Year’s movie project! If you have grabbed the latest i-Weekly, you would have already read about it…

Dai Yang Tian stars as the main lead: 外型高大英俊，乐观幽默，平时一副游戏人间的模样，但是一旦投入工作，则非常严肃认真.

机智有胆识，对队友，不论性别，都要求严格，显出男子汉的大喇喇强悍作风与魅力。其实另有铁汉柔情的一面，重情义，工作以外，对女性细腻、温柔，有求必应，难免让人误会他多情、甚至滥情。DYT will have to make many tough decisions between 友情, 亲情 and 爱情.

The tele-movie which does not have a title yet is actually 10 hours in duration but will be divided into 5 parts (2 hours each).

There’ll be a lot of drama between Joanne and DYT and in between them comes this new actor…Pornsak!

Yes, this tele-movie will also star Pornsak in his maiden movie role.

An important lead role just next to DYT, Pornsak will play this

This may be Pornsak’s 1st big movie role but definitely not his 1st acting gig.

He will 1st be seen in a new dramedy ‘妙探夫妻档 Mr & Mrs Kok’ (press conference on Tuesday 10 Nov).

A Chinese New Year’s movie cannot do without a fun lead character and 李国煌Mark Lee will play this guy known as ‘Auntie’.

The last time we did tele-movie was more than 10 years ago. This Channel 8’s CNY tele-movie will telecast on the following dates:

Sundays 8-10pm on 17th Jan, 24th Jan, 31st Jan and 7 Feb…but the Finale will be on a Saturday 13th February at 8pm.

I will be covering the press conference on Tuesday (10 Nov) of a new dramedy ‘妙探夫妻档 Mr & Mrs Kok’ (a non MediaCorp’s production starring Mark Lee and a powerful female lead star plus many other big stars and it was filmed with a visual texture like the drama ‘一切完美 Perfect Cut’ )…

By Ben Schafer and Eric Blackstock
VCU InSight

RICHMOND, Va. – Students at Virginia Commonwealth University have been complaining about the presence of preachers on both the Monroe Park and MCV campuses since the start of the fall 2009 semester.

However, “street preachers” have been present at VCU for several years now and according to Dr. Reuben Rodriguez, Dean of Student Affairs at VCU, there is nothing the university can do about them.

“It is the First Amendment right to free speech,” said Rodriguez, “That’s the governing legal aspect of what anybody, including a student if he or she wished to demonstrate on campus, enjoys.”

Rodriguez says because VCU is a public university, anyone has the right to demonstrate as long as direct threats aren’t made to others.

“We don’t distinguish as to what people are saying and what might be volatile or what might be offensive,” said Rodriguez.

Dapo Kasali, a resident of Michigan who preaches on the VCU Monroe Park campus, says he feels student complaints are unwarranted.

“If they go to the clubs or then they hear listening to music and music is cursing, why can they curse and we can’t be bold about what we believe,” said Kasali.

However, VCU students say they aren’t happy with the disruptions these demonstrations cause.

“I don’t like it when they interrupt my peace of the commons,” said Chelsea Dodd, a VCU freshman, “I don’t like it when they are yelling at students and students are yelling back.”

Michael Rett, VCU junior, says campus preachers aren’t a problem.

“As long as they’re not offending anyone, especially any religion, then its okay,” said Rett.

But, Mark Lee, VCU sophomore, says the presence of preachers at VCU is unnecessary.

“Our environment is supposed to be student-oriented, not religion-oriented.”

VCU Police monitor demonstrations on campus and say if a student is directly threatened by a preacher, they should contact police by calling 804-828-1234.

I got the first thread in here. Hahaha! yesterday went to TGV to catch Jack Neo latest Hor-Medy movie in the big screen. His latest movie is “Where got ghost?” or 吓到笑. The movie is a combination of horror and comedy, the movie also made up of three short stories which is “Roadside got ghost”, “Forest got ghost”, & “House got ghost”. A MUST WATCH MOVIE!!

The movie started with “Roadside got ghost”, the story about three swindler by cheating the locals by offering prayers for their deceased family members. Be prepare for the horror at the end..
*Swindlers Cai, Fu and Shou have a new scam – using a hotline to make random calls to people, promising them fortune. Those who win the lottery are required to pay commission to Cai or be scared into submission. One day, Cai receives a phone call. The caller calls Cai deploying the same hotline trick. Believing it is a copycat of his scam, Cai naturally disregards the call, but goes ahead and tries his luck with the given number anyway. To his surprise, he wins. Mysterious happenings ensue…*

Next, is “Forrest got ghost”. a group of people is recalled back for army training in Singapore. This training exercise is Forrest Exercise and they have split into 2 people in a group and they need to navigate thru the jungle using the map they provided and the “Enciks” reminded them “NOT TO TAKE SHORTCUTS”. Got one scene is very suspense..

*Nan and Lei return for army reservists’ training. They learn that the place they will be sent to is the widely known ‘haunted hill’, so they take the shortcut. Suddenly, the ‘haunted hill’ seems to come alive – tombstones, red dress spirit and other strange sightings. Then it rains. Nan and Lei seek refuge at Yin Yin’s house, a girl they just met. Little do they know their road to hell has been cut short…*

The last short movie is “House got ghost”, it is the continuation of the Jack Neo previous movie “Money Not Enough 2″. After their mother has passed away for a year and they blame their mother don’t blessed them with fortunes like one of his friends. One scene also scare the hell out of me also..

*It is the Lunar 7th Month, weird sightings happen at home, children can only think it is the late mother’s doings. The truth slowly surfaces as they begin their road trip, only this time it seems to be more than what they bargained for…*

Mark Lee is arguably one of the funniest actors and comedians Singapore has produced. Starring in the hit TV series Police & Thief and a slew of popular movies like Money No Enough I & II, I Not Stupid and the critically acclaimed Eating Air, he is one of the more
popular entertainment exports to originate out of our sunny island.

However, he was not always the funniest kid on the block. “When I was a kid I did not dare playing with other kids. I don’t know why, because I liked to play with toys! But I did not dare sharing my toys with my neighbor’s kids or my school mates.”

It was not until his time at Jurong Secondary school that Mark Lee started to come out of his shell. “I was secondary two when I started to try and make friends with my schoolmates. From then on I became a very talkative student. In my report book, my teacher comments were the same every year … talks too much, talkative…”

Identifying with the term “Ah Beng”, Mark Lee is the first to defend this moniker. He tries to clear up the common misconceptions and negative stereotypes which are attached with the label, “It is not like you are useless or you are a loser. Gangsters fights, gangsters
engage in illegal activities but Ah Bengs just want to live their way to enjoy their life.”

So how did a self professed Ah Beng become a movie star? While in the army for his national service, Mark Lee joined one of Jack Neo’s acting classes. After finishing the three month course however, it seemed his journey had finished before it even started, with Mark Lee commencing work as a canteen operator.

But one fateful call from Jack Neo asking him to come and help out at Mediacorp brought Mark Lee back to show business, after which he has never looked back.

Beginning with a bit part character on TV shows, progressing to regular appearances in sitcoms and hosting and then into acting, Mark Lee is now one of Singapore’s most recognizable superstars.

With his recent standup comedy show focusing on what are described as the quintessential Singaporean vices, “Eat, Drink Smoke, Gamble” we asked Mark Lee
where he got his inspiration from.

“Every human, they definitely need to eat right? And in Singapore we have a very strong culture of eating. And if you look at any prata shop menu we can see all the drinks listed there, coffee, teh tarik, teh halia, teh this, teh that, milo hot one, cold one, kopi with milk,
without milk, condensed milk, cold one, everything. So I got my inspiration from everyday life.”

In light of the construction of the Integrated Resorts (IRs), we talked about gambling and its vices as well.

Mark Lee said, “Gambling is a Chinese habit but it’s important for us to know where to draw the line when it comes to gambling.”

Key findings from MCYS Gambling Participation Survey 2008 shows that approximately 75% of the respondents who gamble began gambling as early as the age of 24 or younger – up from 63% in 2005.

In order to illustrate the severity of gambling addiction he said, “We can gamble anywhere. For example, we can take two money notes and add together the last four numbers of the serial number and see who has the biggest number – that person wins.”

He stressed the importance of knowing when to stop when it comes to gambling. “I believe our government will control gambling; but each individual must also know the consequences of problem gambling. We must know when to stop.”

When asked which one of the four mentioned in his show’s title he was most guilty of, Mark Lee replied, “I bet with 4D and football but I’ll not sit at a casino and gamble my money away. I am very careful because I believe gambling can be an addiction and negatively affect not only yourself, but also your family and friends.”

On just broaching the subject of football though, it becomes evident that Mark Lee is a fan of the sport first and foremost. An avid supporter of the current Premier League champions Manchester United, Mark Lee talks in length about his love for the team.

“I like Ferguson. He has got a particular kind of intelligence, a particular kind of mind. So if the team does not have David Beckham, it’s not important, if the team does not have Ronaldo, never mind, don’t worry. He can get someone to replace them, the team can still win.”

Since there are so many different aspects of the entertainment business he has been part of, Mark Lee tells us what in his opinion is the one he most prefers and finds the most challenging.

“I think being a comedian is the toughest job to do, because not everybody appreciates a comedian. People rank acting, singing and hosting as harder than being a comedian. However, I feel proud to be a comedian because I inspire people to laugh. This motivates me to do what I do.”

Having worked for more than a decade, Mark Lee shares with us his process of coming up with new material and how he field tests it.

“With friends, I will try to create new jokes. I will try to make joke on the spur of the moment, this is the only time a comedian can train. Sometimes when I have got a new joke, I tell it to my friends. By their response I gauge if I can use it on my TV show, or if I can use it in my stage show routine. However at home, I cannot tell my wife “Eh! I tell you a joke” because my wife has heard a lot of jokes for many years already.”

But even though he is a veteran in the entertainment industry, this was Mark Lee’s first standup show. And he was extremely upbeat and enthusiastic about the challenge.

“I’m quite happy to do this standup comedy, because I have one and half hour, no interval, to go from an Ah Beng to a minister. I have to cover everything, from the way you act, the way you talk, to all the kinds of topics the audience wants! So in this one and a half hour I have to accomplish all that! Maybe after one and half hour the audience is really tired already.”

“ Even if they laugh, they would laugh until they are very tired. If the show is not funny, then they will definitely feel more tired. So I have to keep the audience laughing and laughing and laughing and suddenly a big bomb them and stop after one and a half hours. It must be just right.”

Right at the end, Mark Lee gives everyone a surefire genre of jokes that will always draw laughs. “In my life, and I think this would work on everyone, the funniest joke is always the dirty joke. That is for sure.”

MCYS Gambling Participation Survey 2009 found:

• 54% of Singapore residents aged 18 and above reported that they have participated in
at least one form of gambling activity in the last 12 months.
• 75% of the respondents who have ever gambled stated that they started to gamble at
the age of 24 or younger.
• Social gambling (23%) has overtaken Singapore Sweep (17%) to be the third most
popular gambling activity

If you tell a taxi to take you to the Beirut neighborhood of Gemmazeh, they’ll drop you at the start

If you tell a taxi to take you to the Beirut neighborhood of Gemmazeh, they’ll drop you at the start of the Rue Gouraud – the main bar, restaurant and club packed street running through this noisy neighborhood, which somehow manages to be grungy and upscale chic at the same time. I love it! You can spend entire nights hopping from cafe to bar, from bar to club, and never get bored or run out of new places to try.

General Gouraud

But anyway, I’ve been curious for awhile now about the street’s namesake ‘Gouraud.’ I wikipedia-ed that shit and here’s what I found: Henri Joseph Eugene Gouraud was born in France in 1867. For one of the plethora of reasons that inspire young men to take up arms for their country, he joined the French army and began to bump his way up the ranks. He actually lost his right arm while he was commanding French forces during the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915. Like Cervantes in the Battle of Le Panto! Although, that was his left arm. Ha! History NERD in the house.

You know the Battle of Gallipoli – World War I, fought on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. British and French trying to capture Istanbul from the Ottomans and failing miserably. Tons of people died on both sides – honestly doesn’t sound like it was worth it. Oh, and they made a movie about it in 1981 – which in today’s pop culture world is probably more well known than the battle itself. The film was directed by Peter Weir and stars a very young Mel Gibson and Mark Lee as two hopeful, promising young Australians who join ANZAC (The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps – a branch of the British Army during WWI) and then get butchered in Gallipoli. It’s a great film but obviously very depressing.

ANYWAY, I digress. So the reason why they care about this General in Lebanon is that from 1919-1923 he was a commander of the French army of the Levant (Levant = the eastern Mediterranean countries in general – specifically, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Israel and sometimes Iraq and Saudi Arabia) and played an important role in the creation of the French Mandates of Syria and Lebanon. From what I’ve read, the locals in the region had mixed opinions of Gouraud and the French presence, but apparently he had enough of an impact to merit a street being named after him!

I actually found an article in the archives of the the NY Times, written in 1922, entitled ‘Gouraud Doubts Turks Want Syria: French Policy, the General Says, Is Merely to Carry Out Mandate Helpfully.’ I love the internet

Some background info: So in 1916, you get the Sykes-Picot Agreement (s0 called because it was negotiated by François Georges-Picot of France and Mark Sykes of Britain) between France and the UK that defined who would get control of the different territories in the Middle East after the Ottoman Empire fell. But this agreement was secret and didn’t become official (although it was enforced all the while) until after the end of WWI, in the 1920s by the League of Nations. So in 1920, in the Treaty of Sevres (peace treaty between the Ottomans and the Allied forces), France was official granted control of Syria. The Syrians were pissed, understandably and actually from 1919 (French presence already in Syria but yet to be officially granted power by the League of Nations) until 1921 you get the Franco-Syrian War, with the Syrians trying to oust the French. The Syrians lost and the French remained in control. Quelle surprise.

So when this NY Times article was written in 1922, the French presence in Syria (Lebanon had yet to be created as it’s own country and was just a state in Syria – in fact the article is written from Beirut, Syria not Beirut, Lebanon) was established but Gouraud and his troops were still facing small attacks from different groups in Syria who hadn’t given up on their goal of evicting the French. Syrian grievances against the French included French suppression of Syrian newspapers, political activity, and civil rights and the division of Greater Syria into six different states (Gouraud actually headed this division of Syria, one of the states being that of Greater Lebanon, which eventually became the country).

In the article, the author interviewed Gouraud who was trying to set the record straight about the French influence in Syria, explaining that the French were trying to restore stability in the region, reduce their presence in Syria and were generally liked in the region despite the recent attacks – “He was sure the Syrian people were beginning to realize the generous motives behind the French mandate and the elevating influence of French efforts in Syria, and he was happy to be able to say that the French were now meeting with ready and cordial cooperation.” He also explained that he felt the Ottoman’s would not try to retake Syria and insisted that the French were “…on excellent terms with the Turkish authorities.” So interesting. Wish I had a Syrian article written at the same time on their perspective, but given that the French were suppressing Syrian papers, that might be more difficult to come by.

Gouraud returned to Paris the year after this article was published, in 1923, where he worked as Military Governor until his retirement in 1937, and eventually died in 1946.

Well, anyway, there you go. A brief sum up of the man behind the street name in the party district of Beirut.

Can you believe this? I nearly fell off the chair seeing this promotional rate on airasia.com. For M

Can you believe this? I nearly fell off the chair seeing this promotional rate on airasia.com. For MYR 499 (before taxes / after MYR1,547), one could fly from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to London, the largest city in the European Union and the literary center of the United Kingdom. How I wish I could just apply for leave, pack my bag (hmm maybe bags) and be immersed in yet another dose of poetic influence.

Go book your ticket now if you can spare some time in exchange for some cultural indulgence. Booking period from 21 April (today! Grab now!!!) to 23 April (just 3 days?!?) and Travel Period from 3 July 2009 to 31 Jan 2010.

It’s hard to imagine how affordable it is now to fly and the emergence of a price war between the airlines deserve some salutation especially at such time where one should be prudent and long haul travel becomes a luxury. Long haul aside, one could just relax over good food across the borders with the plummeting air prices from the various budget airlines.

And I just did over the weekend to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for great food, lovely time with my future in-laws and priceless baking lessons! I shall break my travel encounters to various sub-topics in the coming days.

View from my TigerAir’s seat. The sky- just so adorably blue! Or were i just feeling high? Guess it’s the latter.

Guess who I saw on the plane? Mark Lee, the comedian turned actor with his wife aboard the plane.

Mark Lee & Wife

Either time must be bad or that he is a wise man. Again, the latter as I’m a wise woman. Why pay more when you could for less get to the same destination? Unless, of course, when I need that extra touch of service where I figured it could be reserved for my other trips.

And so are the many people…look at the throngs of passengers boarding airasia. I’m sure the flight was going on full-load just as did my tiger air.

Air asia is sure following well on its tagline – Now everyone can fly. Maybe soon we will see people bringing their pets along. Not bad an idea, especially so when more couples are opting cute doggies for babies and treating them as their children. So, who knows, travelling with one’s doggy may be the next emerging trend. Never say never. We shall see!

Took the morning flight at 7.20am and TA DA!… reached the land of great food in less than 40mins. Not sure why, the flight seemed to be in high speed too that it landed way before the stipulated time.

First stop – FOOD!! Breakfast!!!

Wanton noodles with succulent char siew -pork roasted with sweet sauce. At? Make a Guess? MYR 4! Less tha S$2. what’s more, it came with a bowl of dumplings soup.

Full set for just less than S$2!

Well, i ordered another bowl of pork dumplings. The dumpling skin is so smooth that it could melt in your mouth without much effort. The sea of dumpings reminded me of the cotton candy-liked clouds in the air I saw minutes ago.

And for just another MYR4!

Next, the infamous Char Kway Tiao that will send you begging for mercy!
God, help me watch the calories!

MYR 4! Frangance of the fried noodles with a mix of sweetness from the sausages, creaminess of the stir fried eggs and the crunchiness of the bean spouts make it the ultimate choice to start the day.

How could the food fiesta end with nothing to awaken the senses? Coffee Aroma!

Look at the foam head and it’s not even a Cappuccino for that matter. It’s so unfair, I have never had such pretty coffee in Singapore and for less than S$0.50?

Don’t ask me where to get these treats as they are evidently available in all pockets of KL city. I have tried a few places and no signs of disappointment thus far. Go for it!

O.k. so i didn’t get 1000 people to go so they said no to me playing on stage. O.k., that

O.k. so i didn’t get 1000 people to go so they said no to me playing on stage. O.k., that’s true + the closest i got was 10 ft. away. “The guy” in the wired fan area was polite when he said “get out of here you nutcase stalkers!” I shouldn’t have put that in quotes b/c he didn’t actually say that at all.

Sarcasm somewhat aside, the music and the worship rocked! The band sounded better live than on their recordings which is extremely rare. Mac’s singing and crowd interaction was great. Mark’s guitar skills and the rest of the band played great! Brandon Heath and Revive are very talented a seem to have great hearts also.

Best parts during the concert:

1. My wife being so excited that she was truly worshipping Jesus across the street from where she partied years before when she was lost.

2. Mac bringing the concert to a halt to ask some unsuspecting girl if she was on her cell phone. He got the phone handed to him and told person on the other end, she’s busy and we have 1000 people waiting on us to restart the concert. ( ?? Mac can talk on someone elses phone during a concert but he can’t tweet ??).

3. All the bands showing by their words and actions that the show was for worshiping Jesus and building His church, not worshiping them.

3. Being their loudest venue of the tour so far.

4. Would have joined their “wired” fan club if I would have known how impressed I was by their hearts and show.

Worst part of the concert:

1. Hitting my pillow @ 3:30 and getting back up @ 9 to get back to work after a very full day.

o.k. i’m not gonna blog tonite b/c i need sleep before i go to work for half-a-day, catch a conference call about corporate’s newest, greatest idea, come home and load the kids, drop them off at gpa and gma’s, on to ft. smith for a little show with third day, brandon heath, and revive, come back thru and grab the hopefully sleeping kids, drive home, crash in bed, get back up and go back to work, is that a run-on life, uh, sentence, yes, maybe it is.

I’m definitely not going to blog about that b/c i’m too busy for blogging and i must get sleep.

I will to do one thing, but I do the other way to often. I read that in the most popular Book of all time. Romans 7:19 – “God’s version of the Bible thru Paul” – i know you’re supposed to reference these things.
