Private (Acting Lance-Corporal) 27251 2nd/4th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Born in Wendover. Lived in Tring Road. Enlisted at Aylesbury. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Soldiers Died erroneously record his name as Summons. Killed in action 23rd Larch near Prernont

On the I8th of March the battalion took over the Forward Zone between Fayet and Gricourt. C Company took the left front and B the right front. Two platoons of A Company were posted in the road near the Needle. Of the counter-attack companies, two platoons of A and the company HQ were at the Willows (M 28 c 1 5) and D Company and battalion HQ were in Enghien. The next two days were spent in improving the position and sending out patrols to check the German line, as it was considered likely that the attack would begin on the 21st. From 4.30am on the 21st the battalion’s position was heavily shelled, much use being made of gas shells fired onto the keeps and back areas. At 9am, under a heavy smoke barrage, the German infantry attacked. The forward Zone was penetrated and Enghien Redoubt surrounded. D Company and battalion HQ held out here until 4pm, when they attempted to fight their way out. The survivors of the battalion, probably less than 50 men, joined the 2nd/5th Gloucestershire Regiment. Fourteen officers were missing, four missing believed killed and one missing. Five other ranks had been killed, 32 were wounded, 31 wounded and missing and 494 missing. The survivors of the battalion were formed into a composite battalion with the remainder of the Brigade. On the night of the 22nd the composite battalion guarded the bridge-heads on the Somme at Voyennes and Offoy. During the day the regiment lost 1 wounded, 1 wounded and missing and five missing. On the 23rd, when the Brigade rested at Languevoisin and Billancourt, the regiment lost one officer killed and six men wounded.

From his place of burial, well to the east of the battalion’s position on the 21st, it seems lively that he, in fact, died of wounds in German hands on the 23rd, having been wounded and captured on the 21st. Buried in Premont British Cemetery; Plot 3, Row AA, Grave I.

To be sure, punk is marketing. However many cool bands and bad fashions it drove, the idea of punk was meant to sell by appropriating antagonistic feeling toward the suffocating traditional.  

To label marketing as “punk”  is kind of silly, borderline repetitive. Richard Laermer and Mark Simmons are on to this (or they eventually figured it out). They go to great effort and many pages to define what punk marketing is (unhelpful clue: it’s Southwest and it’s not SanDisk).

As a result, Rick and Mark end up kind of chasing their own collective tail. The definition has something to do with not selling the way a traditional marketer would. Ultimately, punk marketing is what they say punk marketing is, and that seems to be whatever successfully sells in a nontradtional way.

It’s a real weak premise. Nonetheless it gives 2 insiders the excuse to write about recent surprising marketing campaigns. Most of these campaigns have already been covered to a great extent already, but they write with a clear and irreverent tone. If you want a refresher on what you’re exposed to everyday, check it out. 

But don’t expect much depth. Although it touches on a lot successful campaigns, it doesn’t to any insightful depth. They seem to eschew marketing research and don’t really do a lot of work connecting the disparate stories they tell, or give reason why these campaigns were successful. It’s only advice is something like, “don’t be afraid be creative.”

Not a lot of insight here (I think I learned that I could probably write a marketing book if this is what passes for one). It does provide a lot of manifesto-ish rah rah, so it’s like a more readable Cluetrain. And there are a lot of pictures. This would be a fine coffee and/or bathroom book.

I know, I’ve been remiss in my regular blogging duties here lately but Gavin Heaton recently blogged about a recent panel on corporate blogging that I participated in at the German American Business Association. The entire video can be found online (embedded below). It is a tad long and if you’re already well versed in social media, then this is probably not for you.

But if you’re a small business and would like to learn more of the basics of corporate blogging and how companies need to adapt to the rapidly evolving media then do check it out sometime over the weekend. It featured a few of my peers in the social media biz I’ve been meaning to meet:

Officer Mark Simmons succumbed to injuries sustained three years earlier when his patrol car was rammed by vehicle being pursued by other officers. He and his partner were attempting to locate the vehicle when it slammed into the rear of their patrol car on Hollywood Boulevard.Officer Simmons, who was in the patrol car’s passenger seat, suffered severe brain injuries and remained in the hospital for several months before receiving home treatment. His partner and the driver of the vehicle that hit him suffered minor injuries.Officer Simmons had served with the Amarillo Police Department for 5 years at the time of the accident and had previously served with the Randall County Sheriff’s Department for 1 year. He is survived by his two children and parents.

En definitiva, una lectura recomendada para todo aquel que trabaje, sobretodo, dentro del ambito de las nuevas tecnologias (sea o no dentro del departamento de marketing).

Sin duda los mejores 15€ invertidos en un libro hacia muchos meses.
