Set entirely in the white-walled subconscious of comatose accident victim Dan Humford (Rob Delaney), Coma, Period creates a surreal comic fantasy world populated by magicians, naked women, mysterious doors with bad things behind them, and candy bars. Humford wanders around his own mind, alternately bored, terrified and perplexed by what he finds there. The result, fueled by Delaney’s pitch-perfect and exuberant performance, is a satisfying blend of dark humor and goofy whimsy — a fusion often attempted in web video that’s rarely done as well as it is here.

In fact, few things in web video are done as well as they are in Coma, Period. Produced by Lead Balloon, the in-house original content arm of freelance hybrid media studio Psychic Bunny, and shot entirely on greenscreen with a Panasonic HVX200, the series shows the creative savviness and tech pedigree of writer-director Rick Castaneda and Psychic Bunny partners Doug Spice, Asa Shumskas-Tait and Jesse Vigil at every turn. And that’s really what’s noteworthy: It’s not just that Delaney’s performance is so great, or the production values are so professional or that the comedy works so well. All of those things are true, but a lot of series have good actors or funny writers or good use of greenscreen — “or” being the operative word. What Coma, Period does, delightfully, is bring “and” into the equation. It has the technical proficiency to make you believe you’re really watching a guy in an endless white room, writing that goes beyond the obvious jokes inherent to the premise, and a lead actor who’s so great at both voiceover and physical acting that you may be a couple of episodes in before you realize you haven’t seen him speak on camera.

And when you watch enough shows shot with greenscreen and post-production effects, you really appreciate it when, say, an actor’s sight line actually looks like it’s going directly to the big, tall, imaginary thing they put in after the shoot was completed.

Each episode of Coma, Period — which runs between two and four minutes long and is released every Wednesday on Strike.tv — contains two segments: an introductory teaser followed by a main story. Castaneda conceived the series as a “comic strip of a show,” and the aesthetic, with punchy visuals and a three-beat story structure reminscent of old-school comic panels, makes for a highly digestible web video format. But it’s Delaney — previously spotted online in Warner Bros. Responds to Christian Bale — who really makes the series sing with his 100 percent commitment to every emotion, dance number and alter ego that comes his way.

The team at Lead Balloon has already scored some great advance buzz, with articles at Tubefilter and Markee covering both the creative and the technical. You can even follow Dan Humford on Twitter, although there’s no guarantee as to how frequently he can tweet from within the recesses of his own mind. (Dan’s mind, by the way, is centered at Ringleader Studios.) And since the team at Lead Balloon looks shockingly like the team at Psychic Bunny, the end goal is to have the creative freedom of an independent studio while still showing off the skills and resources that Psychic Bunny can provide for hire. Which, given the quality of Coma, Period, seems like it’s going to work out just fine.

It’s as if new-media-savvy web creators who know how to produce technical quality on a shoestring and web creators with actual creative talent got together and had babies, and those babies made a web series.

In fact, it’s so good we’re almost afraid we’re going to wake up and find out we dreamed the whole thing. Uh-oh.

I’m not really going to talk about the tech issues DarkFall is having, as it’s rather simple. Too many people online, the game never kicks people, lag is bad, queue queue, and all that. It’s an MMO, and in exchange for a new, unexplored, non-databased world, you get tech issues. If they bother you, WoW is that way.

That aside, over the weekend I had an interesting encounter that drove home some vital points about DarkFall, full collision detection and manual looting. From the outside, commentators can easily point out that both features are easy to abuse, a pain, and generally something gaming has ‘moved past’. Luckily not all games.

My guild set out to explore a dungeon, this one a bit different than previous areas in DarkFall in that it consisted mostly of narrow corridors rather than wide open spaces. Narrow corridor + full collision = gtfo of my way! Oh, mobs also have full collision, so mob swarm + full collision = ouch. Mob swarm + guild group + full collision + narrow hallway = fun. Fun in that you actually have to pay attention to everything, including players, mobs, room/corridor layout, all of it. Ignore one thing, and you either end up getting yourself or a guild mate killed. You can also set up choke points for mobs to run into (sometimes, damn AI), and beat on something 3v1 while the rest try to swarm you. Sometimes the bastards pull out bows and sit back plinking you, or kite you around a room, but anyway…

We where happily bashing men-at-arms and collecting some nice loot, when three enemy players ran into our hallway and starting swinging. The initial shock, along with the fact that most of us were at half health/stam or worst, meant the fighting soon turned ugly, and we went running in all directions. As luck would have it, the PKs picked to follow me, and soon I was dodging arrows and magic frantically running down the nearest hallway. It’s at this point that I noticed another interesting feature of this particular dungeon; its one way entry point. The room you enter when you zone in has no exit. Recalling in DarkFall takes a full two minutes of standing still, so that was not an option either. I knew I was going to die, but I figured I might as well make life as difficult as I could for the PKs, so I ran into a room I knew was full of fast-spawning mobs. After some fun running in circles, mobs and PKs chasing, I went down and started to bleed out.

With me down, the mobs turned to bash the PKs, and it’s at this point that they noticed how much damage the mobs actually did. They hurt, a lot, and having 4-5 of them on you is bad news. The PKs tried to kite them while also making attempts to finish me, and eventually one got me. Back in town, I quickly run back to the dungeon and ask my guild mates what the deal is. They reported that they could not find the PKs, and that they see my tombstone (corpse after you actually die) in the room full of mobs. Once back inside, they kite the mobs while I loot my tombstone, noticing that some key items (like my mount) are missing. Damn PKs did partially loot me!

In the corner of the room, I notice another tombstone, and since no one had killed a mob in some time, it has to be a player. Sure enough, it’s the name of one of my PKs, and opening the tombstone reveals a full set of top-end gear, along with plenty of regents and other spoils. My guess is the guy got pinned by the mobs and they took him down. I scan the rest of the room, and upstairs behind a cage find another tombstone. PK #2, clearly trapped between the two sides of the cage. More top-end loot, and what do you know, my mount! At this point my guild mates where getting into trouble with the pursuing mobs, so we make a break for the hallway and drop agro. In the end, getting PK’ed was the most profitable thing that has happened to me so far.

That profitability was only possible because of full collision and slow looting. If the game did not have collision, the PKs would have quickly killed me and never gotten themselves pinned and killed. Had full looting been in the game, they would have one-click looted me and been off, again never putting themselves in danger. Had the dungeon not featured choke points and small spaces, I would have left empty handed. But sometimes, things all come together, and some quick thinking pays off; assuming the game rules are there to allow it.

Unfortunately a lot of us have still been unlucky in our quest to obtain a copy of DarkFall Online . I’m not even sure if a US release has been announced . Frustrating as this may be …stories such as this not only renew my hopes for real PvP but also still make me want to play the game despite the crappy start.

Update : Back

However we have not been able to control /isolate the problem.

Because of this we will shut everything down preform a few repairs on the hardware and hopefully be back up after that.

I cannot give you an ETA but be assured we all are working on this to get it resolved as soon as possible.

Update : Server switch has been replaced and we are up and running .

Vandaag geeft Broederlijk Delen het startschot voor zijn nieuwe vastencampagne onder het motto ‘Tilak heeft ook talent’. Dit gebeurt met de publicatie van het eenmalige glossy magazine ‘Tilak’.

Via dit glossy magazine maak je kennis met het ‘andere’ India en zetten we de armsten van India in de kijker, tonen we hoe zij met onze steun hun talenten gebruiken om uit de armoede te raken. Het is een degelijk magazine geworden met een correcte inhoud. Daarbij kon Broederlijk Delen ook rekenen op de medewerking van onder ander Kristien Hemmerechts, Stefan Blommaert, Lotte Debrouwere, Gretel Van den Broek, Yves Desmet, Gène Bervoets, Dimitri Leue, De Madammen (Radio2) en Marleen Merckx… en voor de vrouwen onder ons, Pieter Embrechts in het filmpje!

Vanaf morgen 25 februari ligt ‘Tilak’ in de dagbladhandel.

Je kan dit prachtig initiatief mee helpen ondersteunen door een magazine te kopen maar natuurlijk ook door erover te praten. Dus vertel het verder!

It consists of the teenager/adult that wants to sell or buy a WoW Account ,Professional Account Sellers/Buyers,various industry related services such as power-leveling companies ,Web and Graphic Designers and even your everyday resident nutcase

I believe, that it is this diversity that makes us so strong.

There are good days and bad but when it comes down to it we have each others back and in the end that’s all that really matters

Filmpjes kijken is altijd leuk. Jammer genoeg heb ik niet elke dag tijd om te JoeToeben, dus is het wel leuk er een paar verzameld te zien, in lange versie! Sreenvision heeft een nieuwe campagne voor de reclame en communicatie sector, maar wij – gewone stervelingen – mogen wel meestemmen. Hopelijk komen er nog een paar bij. Hoe meer hoe liever!
