While the brothers patched up after a bitter public spat lasting over 3 years, the telecom marketplace will be the first ground where the two splinter groups will face each other for the first time competing for customers wanting similar services, but on different technology platforms.

On the face of it, while Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications has the edge in terms of market presence and a customer base of over 130 million (close to 30% of it being inactive) on paper, the foundation of this debt-ridden telecom behemoth were laid by the elder Ambani sibling. Mukesh Ambani, over and above the technological edge, does have a war chest for his telecom plans that may be beyond the reach of Anil Ambani from where he stands today.

More importantly, the experience of running telecom networks and understanding of customer mind-set is a commodity that Mukesh Ambani has already re-acquired by poaching the best of industry talent that would be directed by none other than Manoj Modi. The RIL veteran and Mukesh Ambani’s schoolmate Manoj Modi is credited to have been the prime force behind the launch of Reliance Infocomm and Reliance Retail, the two biggest launches ever done by the Reliance Groups in the 21^st century. On the other hand, the Anil Ambani inner-circle think-tank has not lived up to the expectations that the younger sibling would have had to see himself in 2013.  Not only has the younger Ambani think-tank failed to execute the projects to perfection, but have also landed the dynamic younger sibling in a spate of controversies, that perhaps led to significant erosion in the valuations of his empire. The failures to hive off Reliance Infratel, inability to list Reliance Globalcom and bringing Reliance Telecom under the ambit of CBI investigation into 2G spectrum scam are some of the examples that younger Ambani’s lead management team have failed.

When Mukesh Ambani unveils his telecom gameplan in a staggered fashion it would directly compete for the customers of Airtel, Vodafone, Tata, Idea and above all Reliance Communications. The worst hit are going to be the CDMA operators who have a cash cow in form of Wireless Data Cards whose revenues per user are significantly higher than the Voice User APRU’s. Reliance, Tata and MTS-Sistema being the biggest players in this market currently. With all decks cleared to use the Reliance brand name by RIL, the big-bang marketing schemes are likely to pull the Reliance Communications customers first.

In 2005-06, its was the battle of control between the two siblings that made headlines, and post-2007 it was the battle for Gas that kept the country ablaze till the two siblings declared ceasefire in 2010. Telecom would be the first time that the brothers will face each other in the same industry and fight for revenues from the same set of customers. The story would have been different if the elder sibling had gone ahead and lease passive infrastructure from the younger sibling. A much-publicized possibility that never happened.

As 2013 ushers in and Mukesh Ambani gears up to show his new Telecom cards, it will be his sibling Anil Ambani who is going to be affected in the marketplace. The younger sibling with a complex network, debt-ridden with legacy errors and with a questionable management leadership capability. On the other hand, the elder sibling will be in the market with a cutting-edge network, a war chest to shake the market and a professionally managed team under his close confidant Manoj Modi. It will be a true test of younger Ambani’s inner circle think tank, if they finally manage to pull up their socks to face the onslaught in the already hyper-competitive marketplace. It will not be a battle of equals, but Anil Ambani is not a man who likes loosing and has the ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat single-handedly, even if his team fails him yet again.

Cook made the comments in part of an interview taped for NBC’s “Rock Center,” but aired Thursday morning on “Today” and posted on the network’s website.

Cook didn’t say which line of computers would be produced in the U.S. or where in the country they would be made.

Cook says the consumer electronics world has never really had a big production presence in the U.S.

A call to Apple for comment was not immediately returned.

The news comes a day after Apple posted its worst stock drop in four years, erasing $35 million in market capitalization.

This time the rally is very limited in among the large-cap stocks. Mid and small – cap stocks are displaying a typical behavior of a corrective rise and not  new Bull market. The 5950 – 6050 is a formidable resistance area. However this is not a market to go short (although we do not make any short recommendations, ever, this is a caveat) The Elliott set-up suggests that we could be making a very significant top during December.

The short-term trend is up but instead of looking for up side target exit long trades on rallies. Reversal of short-term trend will be a 100 point drop from any top now.

The Intermediate-term trend holds up as long as Nifty holds 5600. However the entire year-old rally may find a peak in the next 100-150 points of Nifty during December. 5600 level of Nifty is an important support.

Primary trend will  remain down (or in a large Bear market since 2008 top) as long as Nifty is below the 6400 levels

Long-term investors with qualified long-term investments may book profit and move an important portion of funds to cash.
We recommended from 100 % cash to 66 % cash i.e. from 0 % to 33 % in stocks during February 2012. So for all long-term-gain-tax qualifications we can recommend long-term dis-investing not before February 2013 based on our own call.

Although the digital subscriptions continue growing at a healthy pace in The New York Times, this is not enough to offset the decline year after year of advertising profit in its three major newspapers, The New York Times, the Boston Globe and The International Herald Tribune.

Fall in advertising revenue continues to haunt the New York Times, and therefore the direction of the prestigious New York newspaper just announced to its employees that the group need to remove 30 employees before next January 24, 2013, a job cut that will add to the significant reductions that the company made in 2008 and 2009, when the company fired a total of 200 workers with the aim of reducing costs in the difficult environment of the print media industry.

NYT management
The company hopes to reach agreement with employees through voluntary redundancies, because otherwise the group would make layoffs among its employees. These layoffs are understood in part by expectations of the largest shareholders (in the following chart) to benefit in the coming years through their direct involvement in the management of New York based company.

It is the third job cuts program raised by the company run by Jill Abramson, that also in recent years has imposed pay cuts for workers. The staff currently consists of around 1,150 journalists (the same number as in 2003).

Evolution of sales and net income
Perhaps the most striking question surrounding the company is that the number of online subscribers continues to grow very fast (already has around 625,000 subscribers), and the number of subscribers to the journal is even higher, about 810,000. Although taking this data, figures for net sales and net income have been decreasing in recent years, as seen in the following charts.

 Advertising revenues have declined in recent years by 60% (down 10.9% in the print edition and 2.2% in the online edition only in the last quarter). According to the company, this numbers forces to perform these new layoffs to reduce costs because advertising revenues continue to decline.

Recommendation
In the last ten years, the company’s shares accumulate a drop of 83.1%, when the shares of the group with headquarters on Eighth Avenue traded around $ 48 per share (versus the current $ 8 per share).

In the short term it doesn’t seems that the situation will improve for traditional media owners. Therefore, and expecting a reinvention of the company, my recommendation is to “sell” the shares of the company in the mid-term with a target price of $ 6 per share (downside of  26% from the current prices).

History

On May 5, 1886 John Pemberton, a pharmacist of 54 years and veteran of the U.S. Army thought the formula for Coca-cola based on Mariani wine where the wine replaced by an extract of cola and caffeine was added to make a drink with no alcohol content. In the beginning, Coca Cola was called “Vin Cola francais” (French Wine Cola), then considered by many as the greatest symbol-product of capitalist history. That same year, is selling the drink Coca-Cola in Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta and sold at the average of nine bottles daily. First year of the Coca-Cola business the same generated a loss of $ 20. Although he won $ 50 in sales, production costs were very high (totaling $ 70).

Three years later, Mr.Pemberton signed the first agreement to bottle Coca-Cola in the whole territory of the United States which was awarded exclusively to Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead. A third person joined the agreement to bottle Coca-cola, attorney John T. Lupton. Also seven years later, Cuba and Panama were the first countries outside the U.S. where it starts to bottle Coca-Cola. In U.S. there were already about 400 bottling plants to supply in the increasing demand of this popular drink.

In 1916 born the famous Coke bottle after a competition proposed by the bottlers and the company several glass manufacturers. The company sought to unify and distinguish glass bottles of Coca-cola imitations emerging everywhere. Alexander Samuelson of the Root Glass Company won the design and contoured so typical bottle of Coca-cola has become to this day one of the most famous and recognized icons in the world.

Three years later, Ernest Woodruff bought all shares of Coca-Cola from Candler family and the business was consolidated after the First World War. At the outbreak of World War II (1939) Coca-cola is already present in 44 countries, and with the aim of supplying the drink to the soldiers of World War II created the popular Coca-cola-can. The same year, Coke word was officially registered as a trademark, but already used by advertising since 1941.

In 1985 the company already was a bigger corporation thanks to the continued purchase of other brands of soft drinks (below is a list of some of the most important). Although the group was already a large multinational, sales of Coke were decreasing due to the increasingly popularity of Pepsi. Coke decides to reinvent its formula and change the taste to soda onto the market on April 23, the New Coke (being the largest corporate failure in company history).

On July 11 of that year Coke restored its old formula and called it Classic Coke (sales were very positive as we can see in the following chart of 1996). Today the company sells its products in over two hundred countries worldwide with more than 3500 different references.

In 2010 the group agrees to buy Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc., Coca Cola bottler in the U.S. for about $ 12.3 billion, more than six months after PepsiCo Inc. buy its bottlers in operation to cut operational costs. The bottling subsidiary is also based in Atlanta, so the operation really has integration logic to reduce costs and create important synergies for The Coca-Cola Company.

Today the group has businesses in beverages, also entered in the last decades in expanding markets such as snacks, growing at a higher rate than beverages every year worldwide. These sales and profits levels are directly reflected in the dividend per share as we see in the following chart.

Historical acquisitions
In his hundred and twenty-year history, the company has made strategic acquisitions that have significantly contributed to increase the size of the company, sales volume and net profit year after year to turn the Atlanta based company into a large U.S. multinational today. The most remarkable acquisitions among others in recent years include:
-Minute Maid in 1960
-Thums Up in 1993
-Odwalla in 2001

This constant-growth form through acquisitions has led the group to gradually increase the net benefits in the same way (as we can see in the following charts of net income and EPS).

Thirty years ago, the company made its only non-beverage purchase on its history, buying Columbia Pictures for $ 692 million. Seven years later, the company sold the same movie studio to Sony for $ 1.5 billion.

In May, a rumor on Wall Street indicated that the group would be looking to acquire Monster Beverage Company. Although Monster stock soared in the day, The Coca Cola Company announced the same day that this rumor was false. The company now must focus on small purchases and reduce its high debt level (due to the purchase of the bottler Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc in 2011, net debt was quintupled as seen in the following charts).

Stock-Splits
The company has been in constant growth throughout its history, and that is the reason why the company shares have kept pace with the economic reality of the company. To open its capital to small shareholders, The Coca-Cola Company has made various stock-splits throughout its history. These are the following:

Largest shareholders
The company historically has had remarkable shareholders, including among others the well known Berkshire Hathaway Inc., the company owned by Warren Buffett, which currently controls 8.92% of the company. In the following chart we can see the largest shareholders of the company.

The future
In the long term, the company has a growing and stable market for their products, so The Coca-Cola Company can experience organic growth from its existing range of products (as we see in the Following chart). These can be the strategies of the future following this key points:
-Purchase of small companies (especially snack companies) to increase its worldwide sales at a faster pace and gain market share.
-Integration of more bottling subsidiaries into the group to reduce costs and create synergies (also gaining the entire control of the production process).
-Expansion into new growth markets, particularly in Africa (due to expected population boom on the continent for the next decades).

Recommendation
Due to the good business performance of the company historically, personally I recommend buying shares for the long term. Being the largest producer of beverages worldwide, the group has the capacity to manage their margins and benefit from it. The purchase two years ago of its bottling subsidiary is the first step for the company to buy all its bottling subsidiaries worldwide to cut costs and obtain synergies (also controlling the entire production chain) .

With these perspectives exposed in the article and a growing global population, the consumption of non-cyclical products is a good investment due to the increase of sales. Therefore, I give a target price of $ 50 per share to the shares of the company for the mid-long term (with an upside potential of 31.8 percent from the current prices). Due to the current crisis, a hypothetical fall in the shares price should be leveraged to increase the position in the company.

With interest rates stuck at all-time lows, and expected to remain there for the foreseeable future, investors are looking to commodities in hopes of evading the devaluation of the U.S. dollar. On the flip side, recent moves by the Fed and European Central Bank to “beef up” their respective stimulus efforts have many investors thinking about future inflation. Precious metals have long been the go-to asset class for investors looking to fortify their portfolio against inflation; however, investing in the companies that mine for these resources is also a viable strategy.

For those looking at an alternative, or complement to their gold holdings, below we outline four silver miners that currently pay a dividend – providing some yield during low interest rate times, and providing a hedge against if it inflation hits.

Silver Wheaton Corporation (SLW)

• Share Price: $39.49
• Dividend Yield: 1%
• Market Cap: $14.3 billion
• Payout Ratio: 24%
• Beta: 1.23

Based out of Vancouver, Silver Wheaton is the largest “pure play” silver mining company available to U.S. investors. Up until 2006, Goldcorp (GG) controlled the company, but in 2008 Goldcorp divested completely from Silver Wheaton. Silver Wheaton is a silver streaming company – it forms agreements with silver mines to purchase their silver at a fixed cost for a set period of time. Over 24 million ounces of silver are produced through these 15 silver and three precious metal purchase agreements.

Through the agreements, Silver Wheaton is able topurchase silver at a cost of roughly $4 per ounce, from 13 mining partners operating 17 mines, with 4 more mines in development. From a geographic perspective, Silver Wheaton generates most of itssilver from mines in Mexico (roughly 40%), followed by Portugal and the United States.

The company currently pays a $0.10 per quarter dividend to shareholders; with the share price near $40, that equates to a dividend yield near 1%. The firm’s 1% dividend yield likely isn’t too enticing for income-hungry investors, but its sheer size and position in the industry make it a worthy consideration.

Due to a high correlation between the price of silver and Silver Wheaton stock, a rise in the price of silver indicates a high probability Silver Wheaton’s price will rise. A decline in the price of silver is also

usually seen in the company’s stock.

Pan American Silver Corp. (PAAS)

• Share Price: $19.80
• Dividend Yield: 1%
• Market Cap: $3.01 billion
• Payout Ratio: 4%
• Beta: 1.06

Another Vancouver, Canada based firm, Pan American is primarily involved in the exploration, development and production of silver mining operations. The company has eight mining operations currently underway in Mexico, Peru, Argentina and Bolivia. In addition to silver, the company also extracts and sells gold, zinc, lead and copper. Founded in 1994, Pan American is the second-largest silver miner in the world.

Paying a $0.05 dividend per quarter, and with the share price near $20, the dividend yield for the stock is right around 1%. The payout ratio, which is calculated as dividends divided by earnings per share, is quite low at 4%. This shows the company is primarily focused on growing its operations and using most of its cash to find and finance future mining projects .

The Pan American stock price is linked to the price movements of silver; an overall rise in the commodity puts upward pressure on the stock, while falling silver prices put downward pressure on the stock.

Silvercorp Metal Inc. (SVM)

• Share Price: $6.01
• Dividend Yield: 1.73%
• Market Cap: $1.03 billion
• Payout Ratio: 28%
• Beta: 1.67

Focusing on exploration, development and production operations in China and Canada, Silvercorp currently has five mining operation – four of which produce silver. Gold, lead and zinc are also mined. Silvercorp is China’s largest silver producer, and is based out of Vancouver. While primarily focused on China, the company also operates a silver-lead-zinc mine in northern British Columbia, Canada

The company recently paid a quarterly dividend of $0.026 per share. If that continues, the annual dividend yield based on a $6 share price is 1.73%. The dividend amount has frequently changed since 2007, though, but usually increased. Since the end of 2008, when the dividend was $0.016, the dividend has steadily risen except for one decline in the latter part of 2009 when the rate fell from $0.02 to $0.018.

Silvercorp expects a new mine to be operational in 2013, and plans to expand by more small-scale projects in China and self-funding their growth.

• Based out of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Hecla discovers, acquires, develops and produces silver, gold, lead and zinc mines.  Founded in 1891, the company has two mines operating in Alaska and Idaho. That makes it the oldest precious metal mining company in North America, and the largest silver producer in the U.S.

  In 2011 the company produced 9.5 million ounces at a cost of $1.15 per ounce. Stock movements are highly correlated to silver; when the price of silver is rising it creates more favorable margins for the company and pushes up Hecla’s stock price. When declining silver prices squeeze those margins, the share price typically declines as well .

  Hecla has a two-part dividend policy. The company has a minimum annual dividend of $0.01 per common share, and also has a silver-linked dividend. The silver-linked dividend fluctuates as it’s related to the price that Hecla receives for its silver. In 2012, the total quarterly dividend ranged from $0.0025 to $0.0225, with the total dividend equalling $0.06 (annual), or a 1% dividend yield based on a $6 share price. While there is some variability in the dividend amount, rising silver prices are favorable for both dividend and capital gains investors.
