En medio de la larga pelea de muchos años entre Adobe y Apple surge el siempre y archi conocido Microsoft.

Aprovechando que entre las mismas no encuentran un punto de equilibrio para implementar el tan solicitado Adobe Flash por los usuarios de iPhone, Brian Goldfarb, Microsoft User Experience Platform Manager, en el reciente PDC 2009 hizo una demostración de streaming de video H.264 mediante Silverlight en un iPhone.

La gente de Betanews lo entrevisto y le preguntaron sobre la forma en que consiguieron que esto funcione, la respuesta fue simple “Estamos trabajando con Apple”.

Microsoft se ha encargado de realizar todo, siguiendo las reglas puestas con Apple y lograron hacer que Silverlight ejecute en los dispositivos Apple. Todo el trabajo se hace al lado del servidor, IIS Media Services; los usuarios solo tienen que activar la compatibilidad con el iPhone.

Según Goldfarb, esto ha sido realizado a solicitud de los clientes de Microsoft “El iPhone es un escenario único. Hablamos con nuestros clientes y han solicitado disponer de sus contenidos en el dispositivo”

“So we’ve worked with Apple to create a server-side based solution with IIS Media Services,” Goldfarb continued, “and what we’re doing is taking content that’s encoded for smooth streaming and enabling the content owner to say, ‘I want to enable the iPhone.’ The server will dynamically make the content work — same content, same point of origin — on the iPhone. We do this with the HTML 5 tag, in many ways.”

Kim-chi is Koreas’ signature dish. No meal is complete without it.

If you remove the spice component of the dish then you get something closely resembling saurkraut. Both of which are ferrmented products, caused by lactic acid bacteria.

It’s actually the time of year that Kim-chi is made, by the mothers and daughters throughout Korea. More about making Kim-chi and the surrounding culture can be found here.

It all sort of ties in well with the market place days that occur in country towns. Here, people come out and try to hawk off the goods they have. You could get everything from out-of-style clothing to food that is literally grown by the stall owner. Yes, very homely.

I used to eat a lot of kim-chi. Too much makes me itch, makes me break out in hives and generally makes me feel unconfortable. Much too much gives me the shits. No wonder. It’s the body’s way of rejecting something that it doesn’t like.

This is the market place, of my little town ,

His speech slurred , yet rich in humour….
Look up at the July sky and behold ,
Six rainbows at once and a ball of gold
The bangle seller , on the dusty ground
Women haggling all around …
Children running wild and free
Chase around the mango trees.
Throwing stones , throwing sticks ….
For a juicy mango worth the licks
A grey old man and his green parrot …
For a coin , will read your tarot
The saree seller arrives with pomp and show,
Flashing colours that dance , and shimmer and glow
“Two for the price of one !”- he cries out loud
Attracts a much bigger crowd!
A tea shop, the jeweller‘s, the confectionary store
One just wants to keep exploring more and more,
Of the dusty market so colourful and warm
Captivated by the sheer rustic charm…
I’ve seen the world , I’ve done it all ,
Seen cities great and small …
But in all the many different places ,
Never have I seen such happy faces ,
There are a few things in this life
That can be savoured sans the strife
And , I am richer it does appear
With the slice of life I’ve savoured here

p.s: This poem was written long, long ago in childish hand. I can still remember trying to put in words the sheer beauty of the buzz  of a delightful stretch of market nestled in a nook of my hometown Chennai where the tantalizing smell of jasmine flower met sizzling deep fried savouries and the mystique of the roadside astrologer lingered in the senses as much as the sight of colourful yards of printed silk – blue, green, purple, red unfurling before the eyes. Years on, Im reliving each of those sensations of wonderment, curiosity and childish abandon as I transcribe my poem onto the web; though I wonder whether if the grown up me were to revisit the said market place today with its haggling vendors and unkempt urchins, I will actually pause to look or rather sidestep those grimy paths with an increasing sense of pathos….

Bazaar, Mandi, Haat, Marketplace, Shopper’s Paradise… Call it what you like… this is one place that is the dominant characteristic of our civilization…

I read about it, I am a part of it, I have my own interpretation of the Bazaar and how Bizaare it is, Its people, including me, the customers, audience, consumers… call them what you may… The Bizarre Bazaar is one place which is defining our world today and we all love it, don’t We?!

I am an Observer, a Viewer, a Participant, and an everyday learner…   and this is just a figment of all that and more… And this is gonna be fun…

The market, we’re used to hearing, exerts control over almost everything. (This despite the absurdity that it also seems to require consistently costly investments to make it function, like zillions in money not to mention legislation that keeps it happy).

The market place is somethin’ else, as we Helsinki-dwellers and visitors are lucky enough to know.

Markets as literal places to exchange things are what made cities in the first place, even in Finland, where “civilisation” is young and arguably still fragile (where isn’t it fragile!?). But the market as an abstraction must have existed even in Finland as early as 1350 when legislation made it illegal for anyone but an urban trader to buy and sell goods. (Travelling salesmen weren’t put off by a bit of legislation, but their efforts alone probably would not have created the capitalism we’ve known for the las couple of centuries.)

Architecturally speaking capitalism has been fantastic. In the 20^th century in particular, it gave massive scope for creative feats of engineering to be erected in stone and steel. Corporate entities like banks, insurance companies and other commercial behemoths whose names and functions are beyond my understanding have been thrusting ever higher into the skies as technology, ambition and political clout have allowed. Capitalist successes also bankrolled or otherwise sponsored arts and other public buildings with which the winners “gave something back”. (Note to self: find out if this is actually true in Helsinki or Finland. Forest-products companies must have supported town halls and theatres, but did they ever do it like the Americans, to carry their name in stone on a prominent wall? Can’t think of a single one right now.)

But what I wanted to say is that the cityscape of central Helsinki is remarkable, once you stop to look at and consider it, for the amount of corporate architecture that still impresses (and quite a bit that depresses, but we’ll ignore that for now). The obvious candidates include  Stockmann department store. Books have been written about it and its staunchly modernising designers Sigurd Frosterus and Ole Gripenberg. Since the opening of the current building in 1930 it has undergone many changes (and ongoing work on 21st-century wormholes under central Helsinki continues to infuriate locals). If the sheer mass of stuff on sale (especially now, as Stokkers is in its “mad” phase) obscures the systematic elegance of the building, the trustworthiness of the brand continues to be conveyed by the logo still proudly protruding from its roof.

And here a few more buildings that are worth stopping for. Until you do they’re just part of the background to daily comings and goings, not to mention striking amounts of street furniture and temporary signage courtesy of the street department or some other official cultterer. Certainly my photos compare poorly with those in the 1959 publication, Business Architecture in Finland, published by Suomen Arkkitehtiliitto/Finlands Arkitektförbund (Finnish Association of Architects was added later). Obviously those in the book are by a professional but even today’s expert would have to resort to trickery to remove all that mess.) And then came the late 20^th century. Places became important for tourism purposes and the planet became a giant space of restless flows. Amen.

The point? That many of the buildings between which we citizens and consumers dwell so much of our lives may embody values that seem false in an era of financial and ecological meltdown, but they also convey a public spiritedness of sorts if only in their solid commitment to the streets they were built on.
