New gazebo-style stalls at the Flat Iron Market were recently unveiled for the first time amid high

New gazebo-style stalls at the Flat Iron Market were recently unveiled for the first time amid high demand for spaces at the famous Chorley Markets.

Interest in stalls at the Chorley Council operated Market has soared over the last few weeks as traders take advantage of the new look.

The old fashioned stalls have been replaced with brand new gazebos that will make it much easier for traders to set up and for shoppers to see what the stallholders are selling.

Coun. Alan Cullens, who is responsible for the Markets at Chorley Council said, “We’ve seen the stalls that were trialled earlier in the year and it was great to see them all set up together for the first time. The Flat Iron Market now has a much more modern and uniform look and we’ve seen requests from traders to take up stalls increase because of the new look.

“We invested in improving the Covered Market and that has gone from strength to strength and we hope the same will happen with the Flat Iron Market too. I’d urge anyone who has not been to the Markets for a while and come and have a look at what is on offer.

“We’ve been marketing the improvements to both prospective traders and coach tour operators and we’re seeing an increase in the number of stallholders as well as an increase in the number of coach trips to Chorley, which is great not just for the Markets but the town centre as a whole.”

The Flat Iron Market stands every Tuesday and the new layout with gazebo-style stalls means there is a total of 46 new gazebos plus 28 pitches.

This bustling Sussex town has a long and strong tradition as a Market Town since it was awarded a Royal Charter in the 13th Century. Today, the town retains both its Markets and it’s historical feel with pretty tree lined streets, medieval buildings together with cleverly designed new open spaces with unique features and a rich mix of both specialist independent and high street shops. The two weekly Markets consist of a General Market in the busy Bishopric area of the town every Thursday and Saturday and a fabulous hybrid Market in the Carfax every Saturday consisting of local producers and artisans. With the recent appointment of Aldred Associates as operators of both Markets, P J Aldred returns to her roots as one of the Market Managers. Responsible for the return of a Market to the town some 20 years ago, she has returned after a gap of ten years and, together with her team, will be enhancing the Market operations including improved standards, quality of offer, better trading hours and marketing. In working closely with all town stakeholders including shops, businesses and the local council, the new operators know the Market will become even more of a valued feature of this successful town centre. Aldred Associates have already started investing in new market equipment, development of a new website and major promotion in the district. They hope to offer new places for traders in the next few months, although will be looking for specific lines and the expansion of both Markets in stages as the website and new equipment become available. Traders can register their interest by emailing pj@aldredassociates.co.uk giving details of their products and contact details.

Countdown starts to Bolton’s Food Festival
Business leaders and tourism heads gathered last month for the regional launch of Bolton’s sixth Food and Drink Festival. The Festival, which is planned to be even bigger and better than previous years, takes place from August 26th to 29th and is fast gaining a reputation as the foodie event to visit in the North West.
Two Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines will be opening this year’s show with a cookery demonstration on the Friday.
He said: “Food festivals are really important and a great way to draw people into the region. This Festival is the celebration of everything that is great about Bolton. Food culture is as important as music and sporting culture.”

Michael joins a mouth-watering line-up of celebrity chefs who regard Bolton’s Festival as one of the best in the country. Last year’s stars, Italian chef Gino D’Acampo, will return along with Hairy Bikers culinary duo, Si King and Dave Myers and Yorkshire chef, James Martin.
Paul Simpson, Managing Director of Visit Manchester, the Greater Manchester Tourism Board said, “Bolton identified that there was a gap in the market for a food event in August and it’s a great time to have it. It’s a complimentary offer to the Pride festival, and visitors can easily attend the event as Bolton’s only 15 minutes away on the train. Greater Manchester’s tourism industry brings in millions of visitors a year and we know events and festivals like this bring in visitors. New for this year is a cookery theatre for local and regional chefs in the Market Place Shopping Centre and chefs will also cook in the Bolton Market’s kitchen.
Local, regional, and specialist traders will entice shoppers with a range of food, drinks and craft products at the speciality Market.

Shoppers and traders at Chorley’s Flat Iron Market will soon get to see how the new stalls will look.
After running a trial with different styles of stalls earlier this year Chorley Council has awarded a contract to City B Group who will supply the new gazebo-style stalls.
A sample stall will be set up during June for traders to familiarise themselves with, before they are rolled out in July.
Lesley-Ann Fenton, Director of Partnerships, Planning and Policy at Chorley Council, said, “We promised to invest in the Flat Iron Market after the successful revamp of the Covered Market and it’s great that we’ve moved a step closer to getting the new stalls.
“The new look will bring the Flat Iron Market right up-to-date without taking away any of the tradition associated with the popular Tuesday Market in the centre of town.
“It will really give a feel of uniformity and it will also make it much easier for traders to set up and display their wares. We expect the take up of stalls to increase while enticing more people to do their shopping at the Market.”
Around 40 red and white striped, 6mt x 3mt, gazebos will replace the existing stalls around the outside of the Chorley Council-run historic Tuesday Market from summer.
All will have the red and white striped tops, with pelmets saying ‘Welcome to Chorley Markets’, but three corner stalls will also have the Chorley Council branded curtains.
John Dickenson, of City B Group, said, “It’s great to be associated with such a famous and popular Market such as Chorley and our stalls will add a real vibrancy to the town. We are very pleased to have won the tender and we would like to think our reputation as a first class British company has helped to secure it.”
If any stallholder would like to be part of the Market they should contact the Council on 01257 515151 or visit

The Source is an innovative new approach to food marketing and promotion within Leeds Kirkgate Market. It is a specially equipped and fitted out stall, in the beautiful 1904 Hall and is intended to become the focus for information about the great food on offer in the Market as well as bringing talented, exciting demonstrations from within the Market and beyond.

The Source will be available to hire for demonstrations, promotions, tastings, testing and market research and it will always be first and foremost food-fixated.

Nick Copland, Brand Director of Shelf Life, the food marketing company behind The Source said, “Our objective is to make Leeds Kirkgate Market more famous for food, to focus people’s attention on the great food available throughout the Market, to help them find it more easily, to bring new people into the Market and to encourage new interest, new traders and new customers.

“Everything we do is intended to develop the food-based business in Kirkgate Market and to champion it as a place to experience great food. Our aim is to create a buzz around the food offered here, help people find what they want, discover food, flavours, tastes and ways to shop and enjoy it, to help traders to co-ordinate and co-operate to win new business and consolidate their offers.”

Shelf Life’s Sales Director, Rebecca Roberts is confident the new stall will make an impact stating, “The Source will also become the social media and online hub for food in the Market, with a dedicated website, blog and Twitter account providing links and connections for traders to build and inform new networks.

“The facilities at The Source will be available to the traders within the Market so they can have the chance to show off their food, their passion, and their inspiration.
