SanDisk Corp is being featured here today and at
Stock-Market-Keywords.com for the time period
starting 12/1/2008 to 12/24/2009.

Although the stock metadata reports presented for SanDisk Corp are 100% accurate, the actual stock prices and number of shares traded in these reports for SanDisk Corp have been altered slightly to maintain the focus on the metadata.

Let’s get started. Metadata refers to data about data. We can examine some of what is available from using metadata by simply looking at two of the reports found here as PDFs for SanDisk Corp.

First, click on the Daily Historical Metadata Summary report screen shown below. Here you’ll see one type of metadata analysis with results for SanDisk Corp showing stock price ranges and price relationships for a defined time frame indicating how shares of this company have been trading.

You can then use these types of statistics to obtain hints of what to expect and not expect to happen with the stock price during the day, a sort of best-case or worst-case scenario.

The 15-minute Hi-Low Counts report shown below for SanDisk Corp can be equally informative. Statistically speaking when analyzing stock information over a specific date range, if you want to know the 15-minute period when shares trade at their highest price or lowest price, or the 15-minute period when the highest or lowest number of shares are traded, this report provides those answers.

Although only two out of the five stock metadata reports for
SanDisk Corp are available from this page you’re on now, you can also click here to go to the main site containing all five stock metadata reports. All of these reports are free and have the information you need to understand the different aspects of what has been happening with this company’s stock.

If you choose to create your own version of these reports for your personal use only, links to detailed descriptions of each of them can also be found on the Reports Defined page which is located on the Stock-Market-Keywords.com site.

While you’re there, you can also use the direct one-click links to some of the most popular sources of stock market news, information and data from sites like Google, Yahoo!, MSN Money, WSJ’s MarketWatch, Bloomberg, along with others for this company.

- Austin

Marketwatch’s Jim Bernard, a speaker at David Brauer’s #ofon gathering about the future of news, noted the Huffington Post had put up an item featuring a video of tigers (not Tiger) mating in a natural setting. This was enjoyed for what it is – a blatant example of trying to game the search engine algorithms – that has been ridiculed elsewhere as well. It’s particularly fun to note the terms the post is tagged with (see the call-out in the image below), particularly the “green news” add at the end of the list.

It will be interesting to see what the same blatant exploitation of this situation does for us here at the Crowd.

Exxon Mobil Corp.’s agreement to buy XTO Energy Inc. in an all-stock deal valued at $41-billio

Exxon Mobil Corp.’s agreement to buy XTO Energy Inc. in an all-stock deal valued at $41-billion (U.S.) is a bet that natural gas usage in the long-run will rise as a cleaner energy alternative to coal and heavy oil. Exxon is the largest publicly traded oil company and has been accumulating shale gas assets in Poland, Germany, Hungary, and Argentina.

The acquisition is a key strategic move to position Exxon within the shale gas market and analysts like the deal. Major energy producers have been flocking to shale gas as a key energy source over the long term and new exploration has been extended outside North America’s prolific shale gas plays like the Horn River basin, and Barnett basin. Many companies are financing by selling off conventional natural gas production in favor of lower-cost shale gas.

Commenting on the Exxon, XTO deal, MarketWatch stated;

The move marks a major bet on gas as a cleaner-burning fuel than oil, as governments around the world look to Copenhagen climate-change talks this week to stem the flow of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere to combat global warming.

According to David Rockecharlie, co-head of energy investment banking group at Jefferies & Co. which co-advised XTO on the transaction:

“Every major oil company is thinking about getting into these shale plays both in the U.S. and globally, the question is how”.

Martin Molyneaux, managing director of institutional research at Calgary’s FirstEnergy Capital Corp. was quoted:

“It’s kind of like the Pope blessing the exercise. You couldn’t have a more credible enterprise sanctifying the unconventional industry in North America. This will cause a rethink for everybody. It pretty much revalues the whole industry up and down the value chain both in Canada and the United States.”

Classic economic and investment writing from Paul Farrell at MarketWatch regarding Ben Bernanke, now

Classic economic and investment writing from Paul Farrell at MarketWatch regarding Ben Bernanke, now up for a second go-round as Fed Chair:

“If you’re betting, head for the gaming tables with Soros, Paulson, Einhorn (he’s already on record betting on a “currency death spiral.”) They’ll all make billions betting against Obama.”

Later…

“TPM’s Dean Baker was furious about this (that is, about Bernanke’s recent op-ed in the Washington Post) brazen huckster: “The arrogance of Bernanke’s column is almost beyond belief. This man is incredibly lucky to still have his job at a time when millions of other workers have lost theirs as a direct result of his incompetence.”

There’s more…

“Wessel, author of “In Fed We Trust,” went deeper: “Bunning’s verbal misstep underscored a question that echoed in a cavernous Senate hearing room … wasn’t it your mistakes and those made while you were at Alan Greenspan’s side that got us into this mess?” Chairman Christopher Dodd added: “the signs were so blatantly clear. And yet … the Fed … failed terribly.”

and…

“My conclusion: Bernanke cannot be trusted, he’s either a compulsive liar, or like Greenspan, Bernanke’s driven more by blind ideology than facts, research and the public good.”

I left a ton of great analysis out. This is a must read.

I don’t want to be so cynical as to say no one can be trusted, but I can say with great sincerity we trust our “public servants” w-a-y too much.

Not likely, according to Brett Arends in Marketwatch today. His math is worthy of the ‘dismal science’ of economics, saying that at 2 cents per page view (apparently the advertising value) a reporter would need 11,000 page views per day in order to be paid $40,000 a year, hardly a princely sum. To earn $100K a year, you’d need 27,000 page views.

“So long as news tries to live off online advertising alone, the future for journalists is not bright. Journalism may become like acting or being a musician: There will be fewer full-time jobs, and they will pay poorly. A lot of news writing will end up being done by amateurs, those with day jobs or by kids just out of college, sharing rooms in Brooklyn, N.Y., before they go on to “real” careers.

“What that may portend for the quality of reporting is another matter. If we end up living on a content diet of propaganda, celebrity gossip and free blogs, too bad.”

Actually, there is no “Great Moments in Logic #1″ post, but I am mindful of a similarly themed post back in August 14, 2008, also motivated by a “Best of the Web” comment: “A True Canard? Thomas Friedman delghts via James Taranto.”

As a mathematician, displays of horrible logic always catch my eye, and Mr. Taranto has caught a whopper in a brief 12/1/2009 MarketWatch report by Rex Nutting. The quote below is taken from James Taranto’s daily “Best of the Web Today” feature in the online WSJ, which quotes the MarketWatch piece in full (one paragraph):

[From "Best of the Web"] – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

Stimuli Work, Ergo the Stimulus Is Working
MarketWatch reports on a cheering finding from the Congressional Budget Office:

The $787 billion fiscal stimulus program approved in February is working pretty much as expected, the Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday. U.S. employment is about 600,000 to 1.6 million higher, and real gross domestic product is about 1.2% to 3.2% higher than they would have been without the stimulus, CBO said. That estimate is nearly identical to the CBO’s assessment in March. The CBO based its estimates on long-standing relationships between additional spending and economic growth, rather than relying on incomplete and inaccurate reports from companies awarded federal contracts. Much of the direct government spending in the stimulus bill is yet to come.

Did we read that right? Yes, we did. Here’s the actual CBO report:

Estimating the law’s overall effects on employment requires a more comprehensive analysis than the recipients’ reports provide. Therefore, looking at the actual amounts spent so far (where identifiable) and estimates of the other effects of ARRA on spending and revenues, CBO has estimated the law’s impact on employment and economic output using evidence about how previous similar policies have affected the economy and various mathematical models that represent the workings of the economy. On that basis, CBO estimates that in the third quarter of calendar year 2009, an additional 600,000 to 1.6 million people were employed in the United States.

So the CBO’s estimate is “nearly identical” to the one in March because it is based on exactly the same information: the cost of the stimulus and the putative effect of spending that much money. It’s like a restaurant reviewer who estimates the quality of a meal by looking at the prices on the menu.

[End of Selection] – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

Did you catch that? Taranto summarized things wonderfully, but — as is my wont — let me overexplain…

There are a few things to point out: (1) The CBO’s statement that the stimulus “is working” is not based at all on any real look at the real results of the stimulus. It is essentially like saying, “Well, we projected in the past that it would work, and on the basis of those past projections we’ll say that it is working now.” Not that this means that the stimulus isn’t working, but that’s just the problem — it’s a meaningless statement. (2) Also, the MarketWatch paragraph, as so neatly highlighted by Taranto, says essentially that the CBO’s statement on Tuesday is the same as the CBO’s statement last March because it is based on exactly the same information — there is no new information, whatsoever. So why release a new statement, at all?

The report intial statement — “The $787 billion fiscal stimulus program approved in February is working pretty much as expected, the Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday.” — has, actually, no basis whatsoever. This would have been a more logically sound statement:

On Tuesday, the Congressional Budget Office reported its estimates of the cumulative effects of the $787 billion fiscal stimulus program approved in February. The CBO’s mathematical models predict that U.S. employment is 600,000 to 1.6 million jobs higher and the the real gross domestic product 1.2% to 3.2% higher than each would have been without the stimulus. The CBO reports that these figures are based on their model assumptions with considerations about where the stimulus money has been spent so far and not on actual measurements of real effects. Much of the direct government spending in the stimulus bill is yet to come.

It’s a shorter statement, too — normally, a difficult thing for me to achieve (see Exhibit A)!

As it stands, the reporting actually says, “The stimulus is working exactly as we expected, based solely on our assumption that it is working as expected.” And it’s not that the CBO report does not have potential value; it provides a basis by which the success/failure of the stimulus could be measured. But without any measurements, it’s useless. All of which makes the title of the MarketWatch piece — “Stimulus Working Pretty Much as Planned, CBO Says” — either a horribly inaccurate summary of what the CBO is actually saying or an inadvertent exposure to the CBO’s horrific reasoning on this point.

As usual, I don’t mean this as a comment on the politics or economics, just on the logic — or lack, thereof. And, I suppose, it is a comment on what bothers me about politics. “Data” like this is bandied about by anyone whose cause is best served, yet without any qualification or explanation of the information’s limitations. As part of an extended discussion, these projections could be helpful. As soundbites for campaign purposes or “points” scored on news programs, they are worthless.
