Grid Frameworks (Anwendungsorientierte Baukästen, Grid- Basiertes Layout)

Layouterstellung mit HTML

Vordefinierte Gridklassen

CSS Frameworks (Entwicklerorientierte Baukästen, Spaltenbasiertes Layout)

Vordefinierter Markup

Layouterstellung mit CSS

Beispiele dafür? (Werden nicht alle benannt!)

Grid Frameworks

Blueprint CSS

960.gs

YUI

CSS Frameworks

Yaml

A CSS Framework

Unterschiede

Inhalte

Mögliche Inhalte bzw. Stylesheets eines Frameworks:

Reset.css

Base.css

Typography.css

Layout.css

Browser.css

Table.css

Form.css

Print.css

„ Yaml liefert zusätzlich die vom Benutzer erstellte Struktur mit. (Html Code)“

Vorteile und Nachteile

Vorteile

Tabellenfrei (CSS)

Schnelle Entwicklung, Schnelle Ergebnisse

Cross-Browser Kompatibilität (IE Bugfixes, Bugprävetion)

Einheitliche Code Basis

Normalisierung der Code

Einhaltung von Standards

Vermeiden von alltäglichen Fehlern

Steigerung der Produktivität

Verbesserter Workflow bei Team-Arbeit

Flexible und Pflegeleicht

Modulare Aufbau

Wohl geformten Markup

Nachteile

Einarbeitungszeit für das Framework

Frameworks erzeugen mehr Code als notwendig (Overhead)

Eigenschränkte Kreativität durch Vorgaben (Individuelle Layouts brauchen individuelle Lösungen);-)

If you have a website you might want to make links you can click on and insert images instead of pla

If you have a website you might want to make links you can click on and insert images instead of plain text. Below is how to insert a link.

Link Text Here

If you notice it started with <a and ended with that is showing that it started and ended. the href=” is telling the computer it is the url and it is starting. After the url is a “> that is telling the computer it is done with the link’s url and is starting what the link will be called. That is pretty simple you replace the url with whatever url you want and replace the text with what you want the link to be called on the website. Below is how to insert an image.

That is how to insert an image without adding some more information and is not the best way to insert images below is hot to use the alt attribute.

The alt attribute is used if the image does not appear on the website it will have the text instead. This is a good thing to get used to doing. There is even more you can add to the image. Below is how to tell the computer the image dimensions.

This is another good thing to do because The internet browser will already know where the image is going to be and how big it is. If you don’t then the text might move when someone is reading it because an image just loaded.

That is how you make an image link to another website if you click on it. Below is how to make a border around the image.

That makes a border of 10 pixels around the image. Below is how to make a link and an image link that opens in a different tab or window when they click on it.

Link Text Here

The top one is how to make an image link open in a new tab and the bottom one is how to do that with a link.

If you have not used color in your HTML document you should try and see that using color can be a good thing. The first thing you need to know about colors is that there are certain web safe colors just like web safe fonts. The web safe fonts you can enter there names and they will work. You can use any color if you enter in the hexadecimal color number (like white is #ffffff). To change the background color you type in the tag below.

That makes the background color white if you want it black it is #000000 and if you want to pick a color a good website to go to is http://www.colorpicker.com/. Below is how to change the font color to black.

That is the hello world website. If you have that as your website the text is plain and everything

That is the hello world website. If you have that as your website the text is plain and everything is default. This is how to do some basic formating like size and type and stuff like that. Tomorrow’s tutorial will be how to use colors in the HTML document. The first thing you might want to do is make something bold. Below is how to make the word hello bold.

Hello World

Notice that I used the tag that is how to make something bold. To end the bold tag use you can start and end it anywhere so if you wanted to you could of made just the H bold. After that you might want to make something italicized. Below is how to make World italicized.

Hello World

Notice that I used to start it and to end it, it is kind of like the tag because you can start and stop it anywhere. The next thing you might want to do is make something underlined. Below is how to make the whole thing underlined.

Hello World

That makes everything underlined and hello bold and world italicized. The next thing you might want to do is make the text a different font. Below is how to make something an arial font.

Hello World

Notice that I did not end it you do not need to end font tags to change font just do it again with a different font name. If you use a font you will need to make sure you are using a web safe font. That means that it works on Macs, Windows, and on Linux. To list more than one font so if one computer does not have it then it will go to the next on you put a coma after the first font and list another. The next thing you might want to do is make a font bigger or smaller. Below is one way to do that.

 Hello World

That makes the font size 10 pixels. This is another tag you do not need to end you just enter it in again but a different size to make it bigger or smaller. There is one other way to adjust font size. Below is how to do that.

Hello World

Hello World

Hello World

Hello World

Hello World

Hello World

That makes the font in different sizes 1 is biggest and 6 is smallest. You do need to end this tag before entering in another. Another thing you might want to do is center the text . Below is how to center Hello World.

Hello World

This tag needs to be ended when you want the text to stop being centered. Another thing you might want to do is make a paragraph or break the text. Below is how to do that with the words hello world.

Hello
World

The
tag is how to start the paragraph and the
tag is used to end the paragraph it does need to be ended. The
tag is used to make a line break or new line. It does not need to be ended. That is all for this tutorial tomorrow’s tutorial will be on colors.

That was the HTML code from yesterdays post. You might of been able to understand it or you

That was the HTML code from yesterdays post. You might of been able to understand it or you might of not been able to. This is a tutorial that tells you what everything does. The fist thing you see is
that is telling the computer that this is an HTML document and it is starting. the symbols < > with text in the middle means you are starting that tag. The symbols </ > with text in the middle mean that you are ending that tag. The next thing you see is
this is telling the computer that it is starting the head section. In the head section you can put a lot more things than just the title. You can put a favicon, meta tags, scripts, and more but I will tell you about that on a different tutorial. Next you see
that is telling the computer that you are giving the website a title. Notice that the
tag is inside the
tag that is were it should be it would not be correct to put it in the
tag. Next you see the words Hello World that is the title so that is what would appear in the title bar. Next you see
that is telling the computer you are done with the title so it does not keep making the whole website the title. Next you see
that is telling the computer you are done with the head. After that you see
this is telling the computer that you are starting the body. After the body tag you see the words Hello World that is what will show up in the internet browser so this is where the content goes. After that you see
that is saying you are done with the body. The last thing you see is
that is saying you are done with the HTML document. Tomorrow’s tutorial will be how to use some formating for the text.

If you have a website and use a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor then you might want to try HTML because you can do a lot more with HTML. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language HTML is not a real programing language it is a Markup Language. HTML was started in 1980 and grew better and bigger later. HTML was introduced to the public in 1991. HTML can do a lot more today than it could do in 1991. There is now HTML 4.0, SHTML, XML, XML 5.0, XHTML, CSS, PHP, and more. Now there are applications on the internet that are like applications on your computer like Google Docs. There are even online operating systems that you can use. There is online file sharing online email online chat and lots more online things. There are even computers made to be on the internet they are netbooks. There are even operating systems that are based off of web apps like Jolicloud and Chrome OS is supposed to. Below is a simple website’s code.

That is how to make a website say hello world. tomorrow there will be a tutorial on how that works.

Today after proceeding with the work I have to do, I was stuck with one problem, so I stopped workin

Today after proceeding with the work I have to do, I was stuck with one problem, so I stopped working and took a bit of time continuing to try to get php work through hunchentoot. The last time it worked partially, and it seemed like it needs some more environmental variables.

So I reconfigured my hunchentoot to use php-cgi through cgi rather than through fastcgi. And I changed /etc/alternatives/php (which was a symlink anyway) into

#! /bin/bash

env > /tmp/environz
php5-cgi

Surprisingly, this worked, and looking at /tmp/environz, I saw some strange variables being set:

HTTP_X_REQUESTED_WITH=XMLHttpRequest

What a strange variable this is. I dont see any sense in adding this information. Ok, well, maybe to improve security, that is, no xss-injected javascript can access special content without the user’s notice.

HTTP_X_PROTOTYPE_VERSION=1.6.0.1

I have no idea what this does. Obviously giving some version-number. I will try what happens when not setting it. And if it fails, I’ll maybe just set it to 1.6.0.1 and see what happens.

HTTP_CONNECTION=keep-alive

Dunno, why a cgi-script would want to know this. There are quite a few other HTTP_ variables. As far as I read, HTTP_* is just the value of the Http-Header *, passed by the server. So maybe I will just do this.

REDIRECT_STATUS=200

This is the most strange variables of all. I dont really get the point to this. Googling for it, I only found strange results.

Well, at the moment I somehow get Segmentation Faults from php-cgi. And actually I am too tired to proceed working at it. At least as soon as my current work is done, I will spend a few days get this whole thing work properly. But till that, I will need enough sleep. So … Good Night.

The following information came into my inbox today and I’m passing it on in this blog Its from the Veterinary Secrets Revealed weekly newsletter.

WHY so many vaccines?
————————–

Ever wonder WHY there are SO many vaccines
for dogs and cats?

….ah the ‘good old’ dollar

Here is some info from James Schwartz who has
written, ‘Trust Me, I’m Not a Veterinarian’.

63 percent of canine and 70 percent of feline vet office
visits are for vaccinations. Clearly, radically changing
the vaccine schedule for dogs and cats would result in a
huge economic loss for any veterinary practice that is
built around shots. And chances are the vaccines you are
paying so much for are creating even more income for vets,
because the adverse reactions and other medical issues
caused by the vaccines keep Fluffy coming back often!

One dose of rabies vaccine costs the vet about 61 cents. The
client is typically charged between $15 and $38, plus a $35
office visit. The markup on the vaccine alone is 2,400 percent
to 6,200 percent–a markup equivalent to charging $217 for a loaf
of bread. According to one estimate, removing the one-year rabies
vaccination and consequential office visit for dogs alone would
decrease the average small vet’s income from $87,000 to $25,000
–and this doesn’t include cats or other vaccinations

The profits for vets pale in comparison to the profits being
enjoyed by vaccine manufacturers. Veterinary vaccine sales
amounted to more than $3.2 billion in 2004 and have risen 7
percent per year since 2000. This figure is projected to exceed
$4 billion in 2009. Six companies account for more than 70 percent
of world veterinary vaccine sales. The market leader is Intervet,
with sales of almost $600 million in 2004. That’s a whole lot of
61-cent vaccines. The United States has by far the largest
share of the national market with revenues of $935 million,
and Japan comes in second with $236 million.

I was tripping around the web and found this on The Political Carnival: ATLANTA, Oct. 14 (UPI)

I was tripping around the web and found this on The Political Carnival:

ATLANTA, Oct. 14 (UPI) — Georgia will stop posting signs along highway construction projects funded by economic stimulus funds, because the signs cost too much money, officials said.

The signs were first considered a nice indication that stimulus funds were putting Georgians to work but they became a target for ridicule and criticism once it was determined that they cost $1,200 apiece, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

- and -

New York dropped the sign idea this summer when some contractors quoted prices above $4,000 for some of the larger signs.

hmmmmm. This sounds like an awful lot for a sign, although it says nothing about size, nor what material is used, nor any number of things that could account for such prices for… signs!?!

Now, I guess there is also a contractor markup to figure here. I think, however, I agree with Paddy at The Political Carnival:

“This is just stupid. I can go to any local Fast Signs and have one of those magnetic ones whipped up for under $100 and just keep reusing it. How the hell does a sign end up costing this kind of money?”

I couldn’t really leave it here, though. So, I got curious and went to look at The Manual of Traffic Signs, which has a web presence. In it I found a listing on the price of traffic signs, which was five years old… but the most recent pricing I could find:

Sign panels:
• Regulatory/Warning/Marker: $15 to 18 / sq.ft.
• Large Guide Signs: $20 to 25 / sq.ft.
• Electronic Variable Message Sign: $50,000 to $150,000 each
Sign Posts:
• U-Channel: $125 to $200 each
• Square Tube (Telespar): $10 to $15 per foot
• Large Steel Breakaway Posts: $15 to $30 per foot
• Cantilever Sign: $15,000 to $20,000 each
• Sign Bridge: $30,000 to $60,000 each
Foundations:
• Square Tube: $150 – $250 each
• Breakaway Post: $250 to $750 each
• Cantilever / Bridge: $6,000 – $7,000 each

Interesting… these signs are pretty expensive as listed, and there is no information with Georgia’s complaint as quoted as to the size of these signs and how they are suspended or mounted. But even a 4′ x 8′ steel sign should only cost $500.00 dollars or less (unless the costs have gone up 400% or so since 2003)… and even if it were suspended from a bridge, say, by a U-channel, the whole of a sign would cost $680.00.

So why do we get quotes at $1200 to $4000 for a small sign when a huge Highway sign goes for under $700.00? Is the contractor markup so high? And we aren’t using a state agency to put them up… because?

Time to get a handle on costs of these things and, if you’ll excuse me, I don’t think going to private consultants is paying off on this or anything.

This is part of a short series of posts introducing Podcamp Pittsburgh 4.

I don’t get to talk with Vasco Pedro enough, or I don’t know enough other people to teach me about the semantic web and with whom I can kick around my underdeveloped understanding of ontology. It’s pretty darned fun, though. The possibilities for marking up information on the web so computers can understand it, thus helping them find it or process it beyond human capacity, is delightful.

As complex and expansive as semantics may be, it is already totally relevant to our practical lives. (see Google.com) So here Vasco will provide Podcampers with a little summary.

Smarter Media: The Semantic Web

An explanation of the semantic web and its uses most practical to users who generate content. Vasco Pedro co-founder and CEO of Bueda, a semantic-matching platform, and a research assistant at Carnegie Mellon University. Intermediate to Aspergers.

For a different opinion, I plan to read Cory Doctorow’s 2001 essay “Metacrap: Putting the tourch to seven straw-men of the meta-utopia.”

Doctorow’s seven insurmountable obstacles to reliable metadata are:

People lie

People are lazy

People are stupid

Mission Impossible: know thyself

Schemas aren’t neutral

Metrics influence results

There’s more than one way to describe something

Of course, in 2001 Doctorow probably didn’t understand search engines would work as they do today.

…is a really good way to clearly see the Republican strategy on Health Care: stall, slow down

…is a really good way to clearly see the Republican strategy on Health Care: stall, slow down the process, prevent as much forward movement as possible.

564 amendments are posted on the committee Web site, mostly from Republicans. These proposals generally reveal seemingly irreconcilable differences, but their real function is to take up amazing amounts of time (so far the Committee is getting through about 4 amendments a day… a rate which means a minimum of 28 weeks of markup time.) Senator Baucus, when beginning markup, said the process would take until the end of the week. It is interesting to notice what the concept of time means here.

An example of the time wasting going on here can be seen in this live report the Washington Post made yesterday afternoon on one amendment that wasted an hour’s time:

As if the Senate Finance Committee does not have enough on its hands in working through more than 500 amendments to chairman Max Baucus’ proposed bill, it just spent more than an hour in a debate over the First Amendment and corporate free speech.

At issue was a side battle that has been brewing for several weeks between Baucus and Humana, one of the insurers that contracts with the federal government to provide Medicare Advantage plans, HMO-style Medicare plans with added features that have been chosen by more than a fifth of seniors. Baucus’ proposal, like the other Democratic health care proposals, pays for universal health care partly by slashing the subsidies that are provided to the insurers that are providing the Medicare Advantage plans — $113 billion in cuts over 10 years, in Baucus’ plan.

Fearing these cuts, Humana fought back by sending letters to the beneficiaries in its Advantage plans — labeled as official communication about the enrollees’ Medicare Advantage plans — warning them about the subsidy cuts, saying the cuts would result in reduced Medicare services for beneficiaries, and urging them to contact their congressmen to argue against the cuts.

The letter outraged Baucus and other Democrats, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services fired off a letter to Humana telling it to cease and desist because, CMS said, the letters were in violation of the company’s contract laying out its fiduciary responsibility with the government and Medicare enrollees. The CMS letter, in turn, set off Republicans and the Wall Street Journal editorial page, who saw it as blatant censorship.

Today, Republicans on the finance committee took the matter up, proposing an amendment that would prohibit limitations on lobbying by companies. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz) objected to the assertion that the Humana letter contained misleading statements about the effect of the legislation, but said that even if it did, it was protected by the First Amendment. “It wasn’t lies,” he said. “But you can’t take this kind of a letter and tell them to cease and desist simply because CMS differ with you and your judgment.”

Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas was more outspoken, saying that the CMS letter had sent a “cold chill” through every company in the country that received some form of government help and was now on notice that it could not agitate against the government. “Do you mean if you get involved in any federal help you can’t petition the government?” he asked the Democrats on the panel. “I’m amazed you’re defending this position.”

Democrats countered that Humana had every right to lobby Congress or the government, but that it was not appropriate for it to be using the lists of Medicare recipients it had obtained from its contract with the government to send those recipients letters in an attempt to salvage their subsidies. The contract had given the company the fiduciary responsibility to serve in the place of the government in administering the recipients’ Medicare, not to be lobbying those recipients against the government.

“We’re talking about government contractors hired by the government to stand in the place of government,” said New Mexico Sen. Jeff Bingaman. “Government should not impede the ability of that contractor to run TV ads or influence Congress. But to say they should use their position they have contracted to have with these seniors on Medicare to lobby them to influence legislation seems a little bit out of the ordinary.”

Sen. Debbie Stabenow said many of her Michigan constituents had gotten the letter and taken fright at the prospect of Medicare cuts — when in fact, she said, insurers could absorb the cuts in the form of lower profits instead. Added New York senator Chuck Schumer: “This is not close to being a First Amendment case.”

Baucus conceded that the CMS letter may have “overstepped” in its language. But he rejected the broader Republican claim. “I have deep respect for the First Amendment,” he said. “We’re talking about a special category here…. We’re talking about the communication that these plans have with their membership. These plans have personal information that no one else has.”

And with that, the committee voted, on a party line, against the Republican amendment.

One more amendment down, another hour gone.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the next discussion, on what kind of language – ie: understandable or techniical – that the bill would be written in (and also allowing 72 hours for lobbyists to review the bill before voting on it) took up close to 4 hours before the Republicans were voted down.

This time consumption strategy, whether they get their amendments through or not (and I don’t think anyone believes they actually planned on getting an amended bill to vote for), is making Grassley, Cornyn and their pals somewhat successful in the stall.

Baucus is going to have to put a stop to this somehow. He has the Committee votes… now he needs to use them.

We’ve been cross posting our original creations here and at Instructables. Instructables is an awesome site where anyone can demonstrate how to do anything.

This is a WordPress blog, it uses HTML layout formatting. Instructables uses a kind of wiki-like markup. We whipped up a converter that replaces HTML elements with the Instructables equivalent. There’s a lot of formatting (tables) that doesn’t have an equivalent, that stuff gets stripped out. This is totally browser & JavaScript based, just save the web page and it should run from your computer.

We’ve been hearing a lot of positive feedback from users regarding Revu’s text stamp feature. It seems to be quite the popular tool for time stamping PDFs and marking them as draft, reviewed, approved and so on.

In case you didn’t know, Revu ships with a variety of pre-defined text stamps. Some of them even pull file property data such as date and time, file name, location saved and more. You can also combine Bluebeam’s text stamps with other markups, such as an image of a company logo or a signature, to create your own custom stamp. Learn how by watching this Bluebeam Quick Clip video:

done<ins style='text-decoration:none;'>

</ins>

Now that you know how to use Bluebeam’s text stamp feature, what kind of stamps are you going to make? Let me know. And remember, to keep on PDF’ing!

Sometimes I can’t believe how many comments can fit on a 24” x 36” space.

When I worked on our Account Services team I would often get redlined files from customers. Boy did they have a lot of markups on them! Luckily, anyone reviewing PDF drawings in Bluebeam can filter comments in the Markups List. Learn how in this Bluebeam Quick Clip:

done<ins style='text-decoration:none;'>

</ins>

Isn’t filtering a nifty way to review PDFs? I think so. Oh, and there are a lot of useful features in the Markups List, not just filtering. So come back soon for more Bluebeam Quick Clips. And until then, remember to keep on PDF’ing!

HTML or Hyper Text Markup Language is the predominate markup language of the web (Wikipedia). In sim

HTML or Hyper Text Markup Language is the predominate markup language of the web (Wikipedia). In simple terms, to “markup” is to highlight editorial changes (typically in blue pencil) that were to be made to a manuscript. HTML, allows the author to structure text so that it can appear on a browser.

Here is a list of the key HTML tags:

~ web pages need this tag to display in a browser. dont leave home without it.

~ here you will find the behind the scenes stuff, like page titles, script information and links to style sheets

~ displays in the top of the browser to let the user know what page they are on. (eg Sean’s Nett11 Blog)

~ creates a link to the cascading style sheet. If HTML gives your content structure then CSS gives you design

~ allows your page to have javascript for user interaction, such as image swaps and drop down menus

~ everything you put inside these tags displays on your page

~ separates the text into paragraphs.

~ gives you lists (like this one)

~ puts your information in a table structure in
(table rows) and
(table data)

~ the whole point of hypertext is the ability to create links (paths or trails). This tag allows you to anchor your text to another location (or from another location as they can work both ways)

There are more tags and although it isn’t necessary to learn them, here is some more information from w3C (The World Wide Web Consortium)
I will repost the first paragraph as a screenshot, so we can compare the difference between text that has been marked up and text that hasn’t.

Here it is plain as day

Let’s take a look at what the HTML looks like when we make some of the text bold

And now we are feeling STRONG!

Strong? Where are my bold tags? So, does this mean I have no bold text? Well, lets take a look at the text we just made bold.

So it is bold. Wait, I’m confused, what’s with the strong tags? Well, the and tags were added and have generally replaced the and the so that page readers could make web sites more accessible to the visually empaired. In fact, in order meet accessibility requirements, it would be necessary to replace all and tags (amongst other things).

With screenshots and links inderted into this post, we should be able to get a good look at some HTML in action:

An anchor tag:

An image tag:

Some list tags:

Enjoy playing around with your HTML!!
