Men allvarligt : LÄS DEN BOKEN! Ni kommer inte ångra er.

Keep it radical. “Sometimes I arrive to early. I rush, and some people cling to life longer than expected.”

“Os Seres Humanos Me Assombram”

Beijo!

Barney Stinson – The Bro Code (Audiobook)

Título: A Menina Que Roubava Livros
Autor: Markus Zusak
Género: Romance
Tamanho: 494
Formato: Pdf

Another best book to read.

It’s a small story, about:

a girl

an accordionist

some fanatical Germans

a Jewish fist fighter

and quite a lot of thievery.

Author: Markus Zusak

Number of pages: 554

From the back cover:

HERE IS A SMALL FACT

“YOU ARE GOING TO DIE”

1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier.

Liesel, a nine-year-old girl, is living with a foster family on Himmel Street. Her parents have been taken away to a concentration camp. Liesel steals books. This is her story and the story of the inhabitants of her street when the bombs begin to fall.

SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION

“THIS NOVEL IS NARRATED BY DEATH”

One day I saw an ad for this book. I was sceptical at first. The cover was an illustration of a little girl dancing with a skeleton. I don’t like scary stuff. And from the cover, I honestly thought it would be somehow scary. Especially when narrated by Death.

Then a girl next to me in an opera, was reading this book during the interval. You can see she was really into her reading. I was intrigued and asked her what she thought of it. She said she’d recommended it to anyone, such a good reading. Even after that, I still couldn’t lose my scepticism.

Then my flatmate was recommended this book by her other friend, and despite my scepticism, went and bought this book. Best decision!

I enjoyed the reading so much I had to bring it along during my 2-week holiday. That’s how much I liked it.

There are quite a few characters in the book, but it’s written so nicely that never once I find it the slightest confusing to understand each character.

It’s touching to know some people would go the extra mile to hold on to their belief, despite what’s going on around them. It definitely shows a lot of bravery and kind hearts. Despite the known tragic, this book shows some hope.

The Book Thief

Yes, often, I am reminded of her, and in one of my vast array of pockets, I have kept her story to retell. It is one of the small legion I carry, each one extraordinary in its own right. Each one an attempt – an immense leap of an attempt – to prove to me that you, and your human existence, are worth it.
Here it is. One of a handful.
The Book Thief.
If you feel like it, come with me. I will tell you a story.
I’ll show you something.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn’t already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race – that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words so damning and brilliant.

None of those things, however, came out of my mouth.

All I was able to do was turn to Liesel Meminger and tell her the only truth I truly know. I said it to the book thief and I say it now to you.

A Last Note from Your Narrator
I am haunted by humans.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

He was the crazy one who had painted himself black and defeated the world.

She was the book thief without the words.

Trust me, though, the words were on their way, and when they arrived, Liesel would hold them in her hands like the clouds, and she would wring them out like rain.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Therein lay the problem.
Life had altered in the wildest possible way, but it was imperative that they act as if nothing at all had happened.
Imagine smiling after a slap in the face. Then think of doing it twenty-four hours a day.
That was the business of hiding a Jew.
______________________________________________________________________________________________

THE SWAPPING OF NIGHTMARES
The Girl: ‘Tell me. What do you see when you dream like that?’
The Jew: ‘…I see myself turning round, and waving goodbye.’
The Girl: ‘I also have nightmares.’
The Jew: ‘What do you see?’
The Girl: ‘A train, and my dead brother.’
The Jew: ‘Your brother?’
The Girl: ‘ He died when I moved here, on the way.’
The Girl and the Jew, together: ‘Ja – Yes.’

It would be nice to say that after this small breakthrough, neither Liesel nor Max dreamed their bad visions again. It would be nice but untrue. The nightmares arrived like they always did, much like the best player in the opposition when you’ve heard rumours that he migh t be injured or sick – but there he is, warming up with the rest of them, ready to take the field. Or like a timetabled train, arriving at a nightly platform, pulling the memories behind it on a rope. A lot of dragging. A lot of awkward bounces.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

‘How about a kiss, Saumensch?’
He stood waist-deep in the water for a few moments longer before climbing out and handing her the book. His trousers clung to him, and he did not stop walking. In truth, I think he was afraid. Rudy Steiner was scared of the book thief’s kiss. He must have longed for it so much. He must have loved her so incredibly hard. So hard that he would never ask for her lips again, and would go to his grave without them.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

They say that war is death’s best friend, but I must offer you a different point of view on that one. To me, war is like the new boss who expects the impossible. He stands over your shoulder repeating one thing, incessantly. ‘Get it done, get it done.’ So you work harder. You get the job done. The boss, however, does not thank you. He asks for more.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Of course, I’m being rude. I’m spoiling the ending, not only of the entire book, but of this particular piece of it. I have given you two events in advance, because I don’t have much interest in building mystery. Mystery bores me. It chores me. I know what happens and so do you. It’s the machinations that wheel us there that aggravate, perplex, interest and astound me.
There are many things to think of.
There is much story.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

No-one wanted to bomb Himmel Street.
No-one would bomb a place named after heaven, would they?
Would they?

Liesel Meminger is not yet ten when her mother packs her and her six year old brother onto a train bound for a suburb of Munich in the late 1930s. When the train breaks down at a nameless town along the way, Liesel’s brother’s coughing stops, and the girl and her mother are delayed in getting to the Hubermanns by the need to bury Werner Meminger. Eventually, Liesel makes it to Molching and the Hubermanns. She learns to read. She learns to love her foster parents. She learns how to steal books. And she learns how to survive, despite the atrocities. She and her foster father try to save a Jewish man, but by the time the bombs come, it’s all they can do to save themselves.

Shaun Tan and Markus Zusak, two of Australia’s favourite and most talented authors/illustrators, have received international acclaim by winning in two of the major categories at the Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis, Germany’s most prestigious awards for children’s and YA books.

Shaun Tan received first prize for the Picture Book category for his Tales from outer suburbia and Markus Zusak won the Youth Jury prize for The Book Thief.

According to Tim Coronel in Publishing Perspectives, the award jury commented on Tan’s book that

’the way that pictures and words work together in this carefully designed book is perfect.’

The Youth Jury also commented on Zusak’s story that

‘many individual stories of the experience of youth in the Second World War have been written, but none match up to the narrative of this book.’ That’s a serious recommendation, especially from a German judge, considering the enormous output of literature on this subject.

The whole problematic issue of picture books and their audience continues to generate debate. In our school library, the picture books shelf conceals many illustrated stories worth deeper analysis in the classroom, but few will remember this as they pass them by.

Shaun Tan describes his picture books on his website:

They are best described as ‘picture books for older readers’ rather than young children, as they deal with relatively complex visual styles and themes, including colonial imperialism, social apathy, the nature of memory and depression.

Understanding Shaun Tan’s thinking behind his picture books is a key to understanding just where Tan’s books belong. Michelle Pauli has written a very interesting article about Shaun Tan in The Guardian. Although Shaun’s books depict ‘a surreal world of bizarre animals, skew-whiff buildings, dreamlike landscapes and invented languages’, his books are far from fairy tales or pure fantasy, and that is because ‘Tan’s worlds, however fantastical they may appear on first glance, have their own internal logic. It is what he describes as “groundedness”, and he regards it as crucial to the success of the stories’.

“By itself, just to draw crazy creatures has limited appeal – if I had to give up one thing it would be the wild imagination. When the work becomes too detached from ordinary life it starts to fall apart. Fantasy needs to have some connection with reality or it becomes of its own interest only, insular. In The Lost Thing, to have creatures flying around is unsatisfactory without the context. It works because it exists in opposition to the world in the rest of the story.”

The fact that we still cling to narrow categories, such as ‘picture books’ and ‘Young Adult’ not only confuses readers but also pre-judges and precludes books from taking their place in the world of serious literature. Yes, many people understand and appreciate the complexity of Tan’s picture books and graphic novels (The arrival), but many more won’t give them a second chance when they see the children’s book award sticker or don’t even see them at all if they’re displayed in the children’s section of the book shop. As Tan says,

One bookseller in Australia took the children’s book award sticker off The Red Tree as he felt he could sell more that way, and sold an extra 30-40 copies a month. It’s about simple things like font size – people think they can judge the age a book is for by the font size and assume that it’s for little kids if it has a big font, but that’s silly. I don’t worry too much about those things as the creator because I figure that the books will find their own audience and sometimes I like the idea that they can give adults a surprise pleasure.

It’s interesting how readers feel there must be a definite meaning within the symbolism of Tan’s books. Tan himself avoids being pinned down to a single interpretation.

Tan is reluctant to delve too deeply into the “meanings” of his fables. Towards the end of The Lost Thing he writes, “Well, that’s it. That’s the story. Not especially profound, I know, but I never said it was. And don’t ask me what the moral is.”

If artworks cannot be pinned down to a clear and definitive interpretation, then picture books of Tan’s calibre are surely written and illustrated with the same infinite possibilities in mind. How could an artist have predicted, for example, all the interpretations that would come out of his or her painting? One thing is for sure – so-called children’s books, such as those by Shaun Tan and Markus Zusak, are fertile ground for rich discussion.

Trauriges berichtete Dr. Markus Fritz, Bozen.

The Road of the Dead” preiswürdig geworden.

This book is, hands down, the best book I have read in 2009 so far. Considering the number of days left in this year and the amount of time I get to read these days, this book might remain the best book of the year.

What is the book about? Here is what the publishers say:

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Words – written and spoken – are central to the book. This book is unusual in many ways. One, the structure of the book is something I have never seen earlier. It is broken up into chapters based on the books that the protagonist steals. Two, the narrator of the book is also unusual. I don’t want to reveal it here because I don’t want to deprive you of the thrill you get when you discover for yourself. Three, the actual idea of putting a book thief in the middle of Nazi Germany in 1940s – who would have thought? The good thing is it works really well. The author maintains the gravity required to describe the burning Germany and the humor and the wit required to captivate the readers.

I just loved the writing style. It is witty and humorous. Sometimes it is the kind of humor where you are laughing at yourself, unknowingly. I am guessing the author loves colors. He uses colors to describe almost all scenes in the book. In fact, the book starts colors. There were many sentences and paragraphs which made me stop reading and think. Some got a chuckle out of me and some disturbed me. I wish I had made a note of some so that I could quote here. Google came to the rescue and here are some.

First the colours.
Then the humans.
That’s usually how I see things.
Or at least, how I try.

The last time I saw her was red. The sky was like soup, boiling and stirring. In some places, it was burned. There were black crumbs, and pepper, streaked across the redness.

…For some reason, dying men always ask questions they know the answer to. Perhaps it’s so they can die being right.

For now, Rudy and Liesel made their way onto Himmel Street in the rain.
He was the crazy one who had painted himself black and defeated the world.
She was the book thief without the words.
Trust me, though, the words were on their way, and when they arrived, Liesel would hold them in her hands like the clouds, and she would wring them out like the rain.

“… it was raining on Himmel Street when the world ended for Liesel Meminger.
The sky was dripping.
Like a tap that a child has tried its hardest to turn off but hasn’t quite managed.”

If I could, I would quote the entire book here, that’s how much I liked it. Why did I like the book? The writing was what got me initially. The story will tug at your heart. And the characters – Liesel and Rudy and Max and the Hubermanns – each one of them will remain with me for a long time. What I will never forget though, is the narrator.

One way you can celebrate Banned Books Week is by reading one of the many books that were challenged

One way you can celebrate Banned Books Week is by reading one of the many books that were challenged in various parts of the country in 2008-2009. But, then I got to thinking, another way you can ring in this event would be to pick up one of the many top-notch books out there that haven’t necessarily been challenged recently, but really resonate with the spirit of the week. I’m talking about daring, inspiring (and inspired) books that celebrate the power of literature and depict the struggle to protect the written word against the people and forces that would censor it. These are books that wrestle engagingly with the big questions, questions about the potential of the human mind, the human heart, the human everything, and the deep, powerful fears that drive many book challenges (and burnings) in the first place. Here are a few outstanding titles that come to mind:

***

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

It’s just a small story, really, about: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery… Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s emotionally wrenching novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Brave, tough Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist – books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in the cellar. This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul and the unlikely, beautiful relationships you find when your heart is as big as a zeppelin. Oh, and it’s narrated by Death.

***

The Sledding Hill by Chris Crutcher.

Do you think you know where you go when you die? What if you could stick around, hover above the people you love and try to get inside their heads? Would you choose to do it?

The two main characters in Chris Crutcher’s book, The Sledding Hill, have an unconventional relationship. One of them, Billy, is dead. He was killed by a sheet rock wall when it fell on him and crushed the base of his skull. The other one, Eddie, has gone mute since the accident and keeps seeing his dead friend peering in at him through his windows, hears him rustling around in his closet late at night, and speaks to him in his dreams. What does his dead friend want? Is Eddie going stark, raving nuts? When a feared local preacher moves to ban from school the one book that gives Eddie comfort during this traumatic time, Eddie makes peace with Billy’s spirit and goes undercover in his community to defend his right to read, think, and be whatever he wants to be. Together the dead and the undead discover that freedom is an ideal more important than life and death and that real friendship lasts beyond the grave.

(Ironically, despite the intentional lack of profanity in Crutcher’s book – and a plot that revolves around a book challenge! – The Sledding Hill was challenged at a middle school in Delaware in 2008 for its representations of religion and authority figures. According to Crutcher’s site, the book only partially survived the challenge: it remains at the school, but interested students must get parental permission before they can read it).

***

Libyrinth by Pearl North.

In a distant future where Libyrarians preserve and protect the ancient books that are housed in the fortress-like Libyrinth, Haly is imprisoned by Eradicants, who believe that the written word is evil, and she must try to mend the rift between the two groups before their war for knowledge destroys them all. On June 15th, 2009, Kirkus published a review of the book that concluded, “The page-turner plot and themes of the abuses of authority, the nature of prejudice and the power of the written word provide the primary focus. The main characters, all strong, individualized young women, are convincingly drawn… The dramatic, satisfying climax and deftly handled resolution of the many plot threads will convince and exhilarate readers.”

***

***

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

In Ray Bradbury’s classic book, you’ll experience a frightening vision of the future where firemen don’t put out fires – they start them in order to burn books. Bradbury’s vividly painted society holds up the appearance of happiness as the highest goal – a place where trivial information is good, and knowledge and ideas are bad. Published in 1953, Bradbury’s book endures as one of the greatest works of art detailing just how impoverished our minds become when our access to ideas is restricted.

I love my local writer’s centre. They provided many ‘firsts’ for me. They were the

I love my local writer’s centre. They provided many ‘firsts’ for me. They were the first writing organisation I joined. In their wood paneled foyer, I first said out loud my deep down dream of wanting to be an author. They ran the first workshop I attended, where I started to believe that maybe I could do this. Their magazine informed me of the opportunity that lead to my first paid acceptance. Their e-mail bulletin advertised the competition that lead me to meet and sign with my agent. Not only have they paved the path for me, but they have been there to celebrate each of my steps along it.

Anyway, you may ask: why the sudden sentimental moment? Recent events have me reflecting on my journey more than usual (and the people who have played a big part in it). So I was touched when the lovely girls down at the Queensland Writers Centre asked me to join in their annual blog tour. Which I shall – by answering the following questions:

Where do your words come from?

My words ultimately come from the things that move me: things I see that make me laugh and make me cry. I’m an emotional sort of person. As a children’s writer I suppose my words also come from my childhood. I’m still fascinated by the way kids see the world – the way they’re so open to ideas and people and places. Often my stories come from an experience I had as a child, but I rarely recognise this until I stand back from my work.

Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

I grew up in a small coastal town called Mackay. I was one of those barefooted kids who spent their life on the beach. I still miss the smell of the salt and burnt sugarcane (sugar is a big Mackay industry). I now live in sunny Brisbane in the suburb of Ashgrove, which seems to be a mini hub for children’s writers. Must be something in the water.

What’s the first sentence/line of your latest work?

‘It’s said that the most haunted part of any town is its graveyard, but in Cain’s village it was the old church.’ It will be a mid-grade novel about black magic and bounty hunters and 17th century beasts. It’s a tale I’ve been wanting to write for a long time, but the first sentence only seeped into my mind the other day, bringing with it the world of the story. I’m now letting it simmer away a while before I delve into the first draft.

What piece of writing do you wish you had written?

The Book Thief. I love the way Markus Zusak plays with language. He uses words in utterly surprising ways that are so unique and perfect. I always remember that one of the characters is described as having ‘gangling blue eyes’. More recently I’ve fallen in love with Glenda Millard’s A Small Free Kiss in the Dark. Go read this book then come back and tell me how much you loved it.

What are you currently working towards?

I’ve only just received my first contract for a picture book I wrote and illustrated, which will be published by Viking in the US (an imprint of Penguin). I’ll be working with the lovely editorial team at Viking over the next while to make it the best it can be. In the meant time I’m also trying to look towards the future and keep working on my other picture books / novel projects. Ultimately I still feel like I’m working towards the same goal I always have – striving to be the best writer and illustrator I can be.

Complete this sentence: The future of the book is…

Ever evolving. I’m not sure where it will take us, but I’m excited that I get to be a part of that journey.

Zusak, Markus:
Vorstadt-Fighter / Markus Zusak. Dt. von Ulrich Plenzendorf. – München : cbj-Verl., 2005. – 154 S.
Orginalttitel: Fighting Ruben Wolfe
ISBN 3-570-12824-5.

Am quietly breathing a sigh of relief as I sit back today and read the winning story from this year’s Sydney Morning Herald Young Writer of the Year awards in Spectrum.

The awards luncheon was yesterday, and went off without a hitch, thank god! Peter Fray was a fantastic MC, and Markus Zusak and William Kostakis were inspiring in their words to the Regional Winners. We were so lucky to get them there to speak – very thoughtful and entertaining. I was actually super-excited to meet Markus, although in all the last minute stresses of organising such an event, forgot to take my copies of The Book Thief or The Messenger for him to sign.

The winner was one Miss Olivia Coleman from All Saints’ College in Bathurst, for her simply beautiful story, The Final Game. The story is about a boy from country NSW who wants to escape his mediocre rural life for university, but has his dreams shot down by his father. Very sad, and very insightful for a 16 year old girl to write.

Olivia was surprised and thrilled that she won, and it makes my job all the better to see someone as deserving as her win.

The day of the Young Writer awards is always my favourite of my working year; by far this competition is the best part of my job. I love that I get to engage high school students with writing and discover the phenomenal talent that is hidden among NSW and ACT school students.

1. I met Markus Zusak. Win. 2. I didn’t realise I’d been talking to Markus Zusak for 10

1. I met Markus Zusak. Win.

2. I didn’t realise I’d been talking to Markus Zusak for 10 minutes until I was signing him a copy of Loathing Lola, and he said he spelt Markus with a ‘K’. Fail.

3. Olivia Coleman of All Saints College Bathurst won. Her story, The Final Game, will be in the Spectrum section of tomorrow’s Sydney Morning Herald. Ending gave my table chills.

4. Markus freakin’ Zusak.

5. I gave a speech:

Stories are everywhere. They’re happening all the time. Some are grand; others, insignificant. Some are tragic, some are comic and some are somewhere in between. These stories aren’t self-contained – they overlap, they interact, and they affect each other. Right now, in this room, there’s what? Around a hundred stories each chugging along – the stories of proud mothers, of waiters, of slightly tipsy English teachers, and they’re all great and interesting in their own rights, but for the purpose of this speech, I’d like to focus on 12 stories, those that belong to storytellers themselves, our finalists.

Now, could they just stick their hands up and give us a wave? Okay, awesome… Hi. 11 of you will not win today. It’s the reality of competition. But what does not winning mean for you? Well, you could shrug off being finalists, you could put down your pens because you don’t win, you could go to university, study and become the doctor your mother always wanted, and file this – this luncheon, your writing – all into your mind as a fond memory you can look back on, a relatively inconsequential chapter in the greater story of your life.

But please, for the love of all that is good in this world, don’t.

Being in the industry, I’ve encountered books. Lots of them. All stories. Some are grand; others insignificant. Some are tragic, some are comic and some are somewhere in between. And then, some are crap. There’s one that’s burnt itself into my memory forever, a book for preteens about a 12-year-old who discovers she has a twin sister who is half-vampire. How you can have a twin sister who’s half-something you’re not is completely beyond me, but that glaring fault of logic aside, there are vampires, and it has a shiny cover, so I predict a bestseller.

Cue me slamming my head against my desk and sobbing uncontrollably.

Poorly written, popular stories about vampires, and I’m not naming names, remind us just how much we need good storytellers, young storytellers. Storytellers who aren’t writing about dreamy vampiric leads, but who are telling quality stories, with Australian voices, with a certain creative flair and… well, correct grammar. You 12 finalists, winners or not, you have each been selected because your work is outstanding. So, forget who wins, think about what comes next, after today. Think about the rest of your story as a writer.

Take your experiences, take your talents, and turn them into something spectacular. Stories are everywhere. They’re happening all the time. And we need people to record them, be that as journalists, poets, short story writers, novelists, playwrights, lyricists, scriptwriters, or bloggers. If you win, and if you don’t, keep your pens in your hands.

Now, I’m not saying the life of the writer is an easy one. Standing here today, I can quite confidently tell you all that in the year since its release, my novel, Loathing Lola, has sold close to 13 copies, including the 7 my grandmother bought for herself. I visit schools and my most frequently asked questions are if I know Stephenie Meyer and if I’m on Team Edward or Jacob. I resort to giving speeches at luncheons for the promise of a free feed, and I spend my weekends visiting bookstores and taking my book off a shelf in the back and putting it smack bang in the middle of a Twilight display up the front.

It is a life of absolute desperation, and I’ve spent a whole year contemplating whether it is really worth it, and whether I should, come the next Young Writer Luncheon, recommend it. But you know what? I’m an author, and there’s nothing else I think I’d rather be. Sure, being a rich, successful author would be nice ahem Markus – but my book is being read… by people I don’t even know. While it might not have a profound impact on the story of their lives, I can influence where their minds go for a couple of hours. Sure, it might be insignificant, but the sheer possibility that something I write can affect even a small portion of someone else’s life – that’s worth writing for.

And that’s something I’d love for all 12 of you finalists to feel in your lifetime. There’s nothing quite like it. The winner will get a taste of it this weekend, but really, when you leave today as either a winner or a finalist, this is still just a beginning. It’s what you do after today that is important. I speak for everyone in this room when I say that I can’t wait to see how you and your stories mark this world.

Congratulations and good luck.
