George Baxt: The Marlene Dietrich Murder Case  (1993, dt.: Mordfall für Marlene Dietrich)

Hollywood in the early 1930s. At one of Marlene Dietrich´s lavish parties, a guest is poisoned: a Chinese astrologer and fortune teller, about to reveal a secret about “a great danger” connected with someone present. Police officer Herb Villon, who had come in the company of society reporter Hazel Dickson, immediately takes over the case - but he can´t keep curious Marlene and her friend, Anna Mae Wong, from meddling. The key to the murder lies in the victim´s past, which ties to her several suspects all of which were at Marlene´s party.

This was an entertaining read. Nothing too special, but a nice trip to Hollywood in its heyday, with a bit of humor and a great Marlene and Anna Mae. The story was conceived with a bit too much historic hindsight, however: Of course, the murder victim had to have been to Europe in her past, had to have met an ambitious young politician named Adolf Hitler there and had to have predicted a terrible future connected with him. This is then muddled with an international political conspiracy which involves Nazis, Russian bolshevists, an arms dealer, and more. The Second World War already overshadows the plot, as something planned at least 10 years before its actual outbreak, while other events of the 1920s and 1930s which would have been stronger on the contemporary minds, are hardly mentioned at all. It didn´t bother me too much until I read more books by the same author.

George Baxt: The Alfred Hitchcock Murder Case  (1986, dt.: Mordfall für Alfred Hitchcock)

Munich, 1925. Alfred Hitchcock, still an unknown British director, is directing  his first feature film, “The Pleasure Garden”, when two members of his crew are murdered and another has a nervous breakdown and is first institutionalized, then vanishes. The case is not solved.

“11 years later, in London, an old Munich acquaintance, ill and distraught, begs Hitchcock to read a spy thriller script. The script-deliverer is murdered on Hitchcock’s doorstep. The script itself features the abduction of Alma Hitchcock and police pursuit of Hitch (as a suspected murderer), while he searches for a master spy in order to clear himself and rescue his wife. Alma is kidnapped, Hitch is almost framed for murder and he hares off, chased by Scotland Yard, in pursuit of a double-agent.” (Publishers Weekly). 

It is a really nice idea to have Alfred Hitchcock as the protagonist of a story that could be one of his own movies – including the obligatory cool blonde woman and, of course, a MacGuffin, Hitchcock’s famous red-herring device. The book is more of a spy thriller than a straightforward murder mystery, though.

George Baxt: The Greta Garbo Murder Case  (1992, dt.: Mordfall für Greta Garbo)

Hollywood, 1941. Greta Garbo has just lost her studio contract and lets her neighbour Peter Lorre talk her into accepting the starring role in a lavish independent production on Joan of Arc. But something is decidedly odd about the whole venture, and the production has the attention of the FBI and the local police under Herb Villon, long before a body is found in an abandoned house that belongs to the millionaire producer…

This was the most recent book by Baxt that I read - and the weakest one, perhaps because I could not read the book on its own but always had the comparison to the other two in the back of my mind. The characterisation of Greta Garbo was just too similar to that of Marlene Dietrich (main difference being, Marlene loved cooking and Greta was melancholy), including the attitude that of course she can play along with the suspect to draw him out – after all, she played a spy once. Both books even have a German representative make a generous offer to the movie star to get her to come back to Germany and work for Hitler and the Reich. (Which, of course, both divas decline). The witty quotations, present in all Baxt´s books so far, felt somewhat contrived by now, as if he had had a “Famous Quotes” dictionary by his side when writing and just forced them in wherever he could. The actual murder happens rather late in the book and the focus is – again! – less on the investigation and the murder mystery aspect of the story (which is what I´d expect from a book with So-and-so Murder Case in its title) than on the conspiracy/spy story aspect. And even though with this book set in 1941, the underground Nazi conspirator element is perhaps fitting better than in the other two, GEEZ!  Mr.Baxt, are there no other solutions you can offer to your readers? Were there no other criminals in Hollywood´s heyday?

These novels are listed as part the ”Jacob Singer mystery” series which is puzzling because none of them have even a supporting character of that name. In the two of them that are set in Hollywood, the cop in charge is Herb Villon.

Lightspeed’s early leaning towards American country dressings is traded here for a palette that draws on classical music and even musical theatre.

Producer and mixer Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley) assembles the eclectic grab-bag of influences: joltingly ‘70s guitar and synth sounds, classical piano, Greek choruses shouting reprisals, and at least one ukelele-driven moment.

     Nelle tue opere avevi dato voce ai più umili, a coloro che nel paese di Arasolè, eletto a simbolo di tutti i villaggi della Sardegna, erano conosciuti più col soprannome (che per qualche peculiarità veniva loro attribuito) che col nome di battesimo.
     Non possedevano neanche il loro nome, figurarsi beni materiali ritenuti un lusso, come la carne di pecora o di manzo!
     Questa era privilegio dei ricchi, che se ne riempivano la tavola e la bocca pulendosi, alla fine dei succulenti pasti, le labbra ancora rosse del sangue degli arrosti.
     In quei tempi grami, tra guerre e carestie, i poveri si ammalavano per mancanza di cibo, e le malattie che attaccavano organismi deboli erano principalmente la Tubercolosi e l’Anemia.

Una storia d’amore

Francesco Masala (Nughedu San Nicolò, 17 settembre 1916 – Cagliari, 23 gennaio 2007) è stato un poeta, scrittore e saggista italiano.
Frequentò il Ginnasio ad Ozieri, il Liceo Classico a Sassari e completò il suo corso di studi laureandosi in lettere all’Università La Sapienza di Roma, con la tesi su “Il Teatro di Luigi Pirandello” con Natalino Sapegno come relatore. Scrittore bilingue, in sardo e italiano, ha pubblicato libri di poesia, di narrativa, di teatro, di saggistica e critica letteraria. Come poeta nel 1951 vinse il Premio Grazia Deledda, nel 1956 il Premio Chianciano per la raccolta di poesie “Pane nero“. Nel 1962 pubblicò “Quelli dalle labbra bianche” per l’editore Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, nel 1981 Poesias in duas limbas per Vanni Scheiwiller. La sua opera più conosciuta è Quelli dalle labbra bianche o Sos Laribiancos (I Dimenticati) da cui nel 1999 è stato realizzato un film, sceneggiato e diretto da Piero Livi. Fu presidente della commissione del Premio letterario in lingua sarda “Città di Ozieri” e, nel 1978, del “Comitadu pro sa limba”, che fu promotore della “Proposta di legge di iniziativa popolare per il bilinguismo perfetto in Sardegna” da cui scaturì la Legge della Regione Autonoma della Sardegna n. 26 del 15 ottobre 1997.

Så blev det søndag igen.

Weekenden er forbi, jeg laver lektier og afleveringer, og prøver at huske hvad jeg skal huske den næste uge.

Denne uge har været lang. Rigtig lang.

Mandag var en ganske normal mandag med skole og Piaf.

Og så kom tirsdag.

Tirsdag fik vi at vide, at Morten fra 3. y var død om morgenen under en bilulykke.

Jeg selv gik i chok og græd det meste af eftermiddagen indtil jeg tog til boksning, og det var en god beslutning, for jeg havde ikke været til boksning i rigtig lang tid, så det var bare rart at komme væk fra alle de tanker der var omkring Morten og Alexander, Mortens rigtig gode ven, som jeg holder meget af. Han var sønderknust.

Onsdag var en underlig dag pga. gårsdagens hændelser, men ellers var den meget normal. Jeg scorede gode point i idræt, da vi skulle bokse, så jeg fik lige sat min lærer på plads, for hun gjorde det forkert.  Det var for en gangs skyld rart at være i Piaf, da det kun var mig og John der var der.

Torsdag tog jeg ud at svømme efter skole fordi jeg var så øm efter to dages boksning. Da jeg kom hjem spiste vi aftensmad, og så tog mor og jeg ud til ulykkesstedet og lagde blomster og tændte et lys og græd og mindedes.

Fredag var ‘the big day’. Der var MuSGfest om aftenen og alle skulle have noget mad med. Jeg havde kylling med. Det blev en sindssyg men god fest. 1.g’erne klarede ‘trappen’ flot, og alle blev for fulde. Det var fantastisk at vågne op om morgenen til Sørens smukke trommemusik og Simons lækre morgenmad! (som om!)

Om aftenen, efter en hurtig tur hjem med et bad og to timers søvn, tog jeg tilbage til Silkeborg, for jeg skulle hjælpe til på Rampen hvor ‘When the Saints Go Machine’ og ‘Freja Loeb’ spillede. ‘Freja Loeb’ skuffede. Det var ligesom en blanding af dårligt ‘Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ og dårligere ‘The Ravonettes’, men ‘When the Saints..’ gjorde det godt! Omkring kl. 00 tog jeg med Mikkel hjem og sov der.

Søndag morgen (i dag), havde Lucette, Mikkels mor, lavet morgenmad til mig og Mikkel og Gry, og så skulle Mikkel hen i kirken og synge, så jeg tog med. Det var super flot at høre Mikkel, Simon, Marlene og alle de andre synge. Jeg vil også¨meget selv gerne være med i kirkekoret, og lige i dag snakkede jeg med mor og far om at starte der og så flytte hjemmefra i 3.g så det bliver nemmere for mig at være med om søndagen. Jeg skal bare lige have snakket med min studievejleder først, men det kunne være så fedt at flytte til Silkeby!

Nu hænger jeg bare på en masse lektier og afleveringer og en dansk/historieopgave.

Jeg håber næste uge bliver lidt mere rolig.

I’ve been thinking really hard about what to blog and how to blog about what I wanted to blog for quite some time.. I didn’t want this void to be filled with the tantrums of a little girl down in the doldrums…

After countless drafts I’ve deleted… and times I looked out the window to search for inspiration..  I had the privilege of finding my inspiration in the most unconventional place ever-  a printing shop – Yes, a printing shop with all the mind-bogging, brain and blood vessel-bursting screeches of ink-thingys against the sheets of papers.

With the long wait at the printing shop, together with the effects of PMS and annoyance, I decided to calm my nerves and block out all the noise… and think. I took out my handphone and started typing my thoughts down about silence.. the past silences I had earlier in the day, the current long one I was creating for myself and the silences present in literature…

Let’s recollect the silences I experienced earlier today…

1.  I was fervently copying the Chemistry notes from the screen today in the lecture hall and I somewhat instinctively turned to my dear friend and asked, “Why the heck do I need to know the mechanisms of hydration of alkenes … what’s the meaning in this..” That was met with an immediate short, sharp, (somewhat dramatic in a way) pause after which the lecturer suddenly popped her face into mine and commented on the (ridiculous) answers I wrote on my tutorial question paper.. I guess that silence made us feel the weight of our uncertainty in the purpose of whatever we’re doing… although we’ve been doing it for more than half a year right now in this crucial stage of my life – our lives. That silence seemed to mean that only through time, can we attain the answer.. and although that silence was broken within a split second, it formed quite a significant part of the day as it made me think about what I really aspired to do…

2. This silence would be the kind that most of us can identify with- the silence that creates suspense and tension… Yep. Later on in the day, we all awaited with anticipation as my tutor ’silently’ skimmed through the pages of our report… frankly, the absence of sound after every humming of agreement he made was rather excruciating… every pause he made was nerve-racking… Within that period of silence, many thoughts were rushing through my mind like a fast-forwarded film.. including scenes of myself editing the report throughout the night tirelessly, watching the film Julie and Julia and walking out of the classroom which I wanted to do so badly. After musing about it, I realised.. silence – the absence of sound literally and in some cases, the absence of action – can actually make you think more than when you read or listen to a central idea… silence breaks the boundaries for thoughts and sets your (wild) imagination and subconscious thoughts free…

Full stops, commas, exclamations, caesura, dramatic pauses, sudden silences (the list goes on) are all present in the beautiful world of Literature.

Before I get carried away with the wonders of the little amazing rounded dot and avoiding the probability of turning this blog post into a potentially disastrously diluted one, let me point my attention to Top Girls and the significance of silences in the play on the whole to illustrate the weight of silence in both our lives and the novels, notes, facts, papers, journals, plays that revolve around us.

The issue of how to interpret the silences in the scene has been equally contentious (Tycer, 2008)

There are mainly two characters that exhibit silence  - Gret and the waitress (who does not speak at all..).

Some may simply construe her silence as her inability to connect with the other women due to her lower-class status. I agree with this view to a certain extent as the celebration is indeed a formal event that requires the women to abide by a certain decorum. Thus, it can be justified that Gret feels uncomfortable to share her troubles and her life as opposed to the other egoist women. However, it cannot only be limited to this pov as there is a possibility that Gret’s silence is reflective of how painful her experiences in contrast to the other women; her silence ironically speaks more volumes than the numerous overlapping recollections of the other women’s stories.

The waitress’ silence is also particularly significant as it could be used to exemplify Marlene and and her guests’ lack of consideration towards her working class sister. This has profound class resonances and implications as it reflects Churchill’s concerns on the materialist feminism prevalent in society in even the simplest ways – how a daughter is often groomed to be successful at the expense of her mother’s career…- how the success of a woman is due to the oppression of other women.

These two examples in the play reinforce the issue of materialist feminism that permeates throughout – what are truly the notions of the success of a woman? Are these the patriarchal ideas of success? Thus, by just simply observing the silences in the play, we can conclude the “umbrella issue” and concerns that Churchill had.

I’d like to ramble on about the various important silences in Top Girls but as I’ve mentioned, my aim is not to convert this blog into a holy grail of Feminist theatre (which I may eventually do anyway..), but to see and comment on things, human behaviour from a social point of view…

Therefore, to wrap things up. Silences in both life and literary form are crucial..they may speak larger volumes than any diction, emotive language, metaphor, simile, personification, enjambment, you-name-it. Silences can reflect a myriad of emotions from that of catharsis to tension that may lead to epiphanies… Silence can insinuate political issues and undertones and the troubles of one’s soul.

Silence can  teach you or make you ruminate more than a robotic lecturer reading monotonously off words from a liquid crystal display.So. When you’re waiting in an interview room most probably filled with silence, or in an awkward “silence-related” situation like meeting with silence right after cracking a joke (that obviously fell flat) or trying to impress someone special only to be met with silence- just reflect deeper into it or learn from it.

Or perhaps, next time when you hear any absence of sound, analyse and appreciate it or when you see a little dot or a comma smacked throughout the pages of a book or sheet of paper, ponder its purpose.
