Jeder der sich mit der Geschichte des Hip Hop auseinander gesetzt hat, der kennt die Geschichte um Mr.Magic, der Anfang der 80er Jahre als einer der ersten Radio DJ´s eine Rap Show Namens Mr. Magic´s Rap Attack über den legendären New Yorker Sender WBLS-FM gehostet hat. Einige Jahre später kam es zu Rivalitäten zwischen Mr.Magic und dem legendären Kool DJ Red Alert, der Mitte der 80er auch eine Wöchentliche Show auf WRKS-FM moderierte.

John Rivas hatte mehrere Namen, wodurch man ihn in der Szene kannte. Unter anderem war er als Sir Juice bekannt und die Inspiration bei der Namenfindung seines Radio Assistenten DJ Marly Marl, der sich das Juice nahm und die Juice Crew gründete.

Am 2. Oktober 2009 verstarb John Rivas aka Mr. Magic im Alter von 53 Jahren in Brooklyn New York an einem Herzinfarkt.

When people talk about legendary crews in Hiphop, in my opinion, THE BOOT CAMP CLIK should be one of the first mentioned. Buckshot, Smif-N-Wessun, Heltah Skeltah & OGC are each individually legendary in their own right and when they form like Voltron into The Boot Camp Clik it becomes a Hiphop spectacle that few crews can match. I dropped The Great8Mixtape featuring & hosted by the entire Boot Camp Clik when they were on the cusp of releasing The Last Stand album in the Summer of ‘06. Enjoy!

Has there been another rapper with a lisp before? Has there been one since?

Here’s a classic track from Kool G Rap – last featured HERE in Marly Marl’s “The Symphony”. I was never a huge huge fan of the guy but usually liked his videos. His “On the Run” was another good one but his stuff was always a little too mafia for me.

Before the Nas and Mobb Deep’s there was Mc Shan aka Shawn moltke a Queensbridge born rapper. Cousin to legendary producer Marly Marl.  SIgn with Cold Chillin records in 1983 and joined Marly Marls Juice crew.  He soon released a few singles and in 1987 released his debut album “Down by law”.

Shan also found himself to be a key player in the noted hip hop rivalry the Bridge Wars between the Juice Crew and Boogie Down Productions. The feud was started when Shan and Marl released a song called “The Bridge” as a B-side to “Beat Biter,” itself an answer record directed at L.L. Cool J. KRS-One responded with “South Bronx,” and the Juice Crew replied with “Kill That Noise.”

This was the craziest line…I swear I almost crashed my truck when I really heard what was being said.  You know how it is, you first hear songs for grooves & beats usually.  Its pretty much an unconscious thing that happens, I don’t really slow down enough to hear the words being spoken into my subconscious.  Most times it’s nonsense about drums, guns, funds, & chickies that rappers are hollering about over a dope beat; however, we allow ourselves to be victim to their negativity for the sake of a hot beat & a catchy chorus.  But man, I tell you…when you hear that line being spoken by a writer/lyricist/artist it’s like seeing your wife for the first time.  You think to yourself this is why I put up with all the hysterics…so I would know QUALITY when you see/hear it.  Can I get an AMEN up in here?!
