So it turns out that last transmission that the Mars rover “Spirit” sent wasn’t in fact the last.  The Space Fellowship has a good read on what Nasa got back from the little guy, here’s an excerpt:

The solar-powered rover still has low energy, a condition worsened by a dust storm in recent days. Today’s communication confirmed that Spirit had received commands sent on Tuesday and that the battery charge had not fallen low enough to trigger a pre-programmed fault mode.

Callas said, “The baby is crying, which means it is healthy enough to communicate normally. Now we are analyzing the data we’ve received to determine what the next commands should be, but this is all good news.”

One comment I read on Slashdot (who also linked this article) was quite funny prompted by a user known as “NASA Auto” writes:

It rains and my stupid car won’t start. Their little rover can travel to a different planet, survive the cold, survive dust storms, etc and keep going. Maybe instead of bailing out the “big three”, we should dump all that money into NASA to make cars.

I’m willing to risk my safety on a metric to standard conversion problem for a car that will run.

Got a good chuckle out of that one.
