they had to cancel shows and are in a very silly situation (nicely said).

the official press release sais:

Chicago nu romantics KILL HANNAH woke up on the eve of wrapping their fall tour with Jet, Papa Roach and Morningwood to a find their 15-passenger van and 14-foot trailer stolen. Taken between 4am and 11am today, Wednesday, November 11 from the front of the Holiday Inn on 900 Packer Ave, Philadelphia, PA—the same location that rock trio Mae had their van stolen from just a week earlier—the band lost over $120,000 in gear and merchandise, including one-of-a-kind vintage custom guitars and vintage custom effects. The theft comes just over a year after a devastating fire in Europe destroyed everything on the band’s bus.
Lead singer Mat Devine says, “We’re devastated and speechless. We’ve been touring so hard around the world for the past seven years and this is the most evil thing we’ve witnessed. Special Crimes say this was a coordinated heist.”
The band regretfully has to cancel their remaining tour dates, scheduled for the Electric Factory in Philadelphia tonight and the Nokia Theatre in New York City tomorrow. Their seventh annual “New Heart For Xmas” weekend of shows and events are still scheduled in Chicago on December 18 at Reggie’s Rock House and December 19 at Metro.

Nur Khan reminisces ’65 war

 ISLAMABAD, Sept 5:

Air Marshal (retired) Nur Khan, the man who led the airforce achieve complete superiority over the three times bigger Indian airforce on the very first day of the 1965 war, had all but resigned the post the very day that he took command of Pakistan Air Force on July 23, 1965.

“Rumours about an impending operation were rife but the army had not shared the plans with other forces,” Air Marshal Nur Khan said.

Sharing his memoirs with Dawn on the 40th anniversary of 1965 war, Air Marshal Khan said that he was the most disturbed man on the day, instead of feeling proud. Air Marshal (retired) Asghar Khan while handing over the command to Nur Khan had not briefed him about any impending war because he was not aware of it himself.

So, in order to double check, Nur Khan called on the then Commander-in-Chief, General Musa Khan. Under his searching questions Gen Musa wilted and with a sheepish smile admitted that something was afoot. Nur Khan’s immediate reaction was that this would mean war. But, Gen Musa said you need not to worry as according to him Indians would not retaliate. Then he directed a still highly skeptical Nur Khan to Lt-Gen Akhtar Hasan Malik, GOC Kashmir, the man in-charge of “Operation Gibraltar” for further details.

The long and short of his discussion with Gen Malik was, “don’t worry, because the plan to send in some 800,000 infiltrators inside the occupied territory to throw out the Indian troops with the help of the local population”, was so designed that the Indians would not be able retaliate and therefore the airforce need not get into war-time mode. A still incredulous Nur Khan was shocked when on further inquiry he found that except for a small coterie of top generals, very few in the armed forces knew about “Operation Gibraltar”.

He asked himself how good, intelligent and professional people like Musa and Malik could be so naive, so irresponsible. For the air marshal, it was unbelievable. Even the then Lahore garrison commander had not been taken into confidence. And Governor of West Pakistan, Malik Amir Mohammad Khan of Kalabagh did not know what was afoot and had gone to Murree for vacations. It was at this point that he felt like resigning and going home. But then he thought such a rash move would further undermine the country’s interests and, therefore, kept his cool and went about counting his chickens — the entire airforce was too young and too inexperienced to be called anything else then — and gearing up his service for the D-day.

The miracle that the PAF achieved on September 6, to a large extent, is attributed to Nur Khan’s leadership. He led his force from up front and set personal example by going on some highly risky sorties himself. But then no commander, no matter how daring and how professional, can win a battle if his troops are not fully geared to face such challenges and that too within 43 days of change in command.

The full credit for turning the PAF into a highly professional and dedicated fighting machine goes to Air Marshal Asghar Khan who was given charge of the service in 1957.

Thank God, unlike the other service no darbari or sifarishi was given the job. And by the time he left on July 23, 1965, Asghar Khan had turned the PAF into a well-oiled, highly professional and dedicated fighting machine and had trained them on the then best US made fighters, bombers and transport planes. Those who flew those machines and those who maintained them on ground worked like a team, and each one of the PAF member performed beyond the call of duty to make a miracle. The PAF performance had crucially allowed the Army to operate without interference from the Indian airforce.

“The performance of the Army did not match that of the PAF mainly because the leadership was not as professional. They had planned the ‘Operation Gibraltar’ for self-glory rather than in the national interest. It was a wrong war. And they misled the nation with a big lie that India rather than Pakistan had provoked the war and that we were the victims of Indian aggression”, Air Marshal Khan said. When on the second day of war President Gen Ayub wanted to know how we were faring, Musa informed him that the Army had run out of even ammunition.

That was the extent of preparation in the Army. And the information had shocked Gen Ayub so much that it could have triggered his heart ailment, which overtook him a couple of years later. This in short is Nur Khan’s version of 1965 war, which he calls an unnecessary war and says that President Ayub for whom he has the greatest regard should have held his senior generals accountable for the debacle and himself resigned.

This would have held the hands of the adventurers who followed Gen Ayub. Since the 1965 war was based on a big lie and was presented to the nation a great victory, the Army came to believe its own fiction and has used since, Ayub as its role model and therefore has continued to fight unwanted wars — the 1971 war and the Kargil fiasco in 1999, he said. In each of the subsequent wars we have committed the same mistakes that we committed in 1965.

Air Marshal Khan demanded that a truth commission formed to find out why we failed in all our military adventures. It is not punishment of the failed leadership that should be the aim of the commission but sifting of facts from fiction and laying bare the follies and foibles of the irresponsible leaders in matters with grave implications for the nation. It should also point out the irregularities committed in training and promotions in the defence forces in the past so that it is not repeated in future. Mr Khan believes that our soldiers when called upon have fought with their lives but because of bad leadership their supreme sacrifices went waste. And after every war that we began we ended up taking dictation from the enemy — at Tashkant, at Simla and lastly at Washington.

He said at present Pakistan is engaged in another war, this time in Waziristan. This war can also end up in a fiasco and politically disastrous for the federation if it is fought with the same nonchalance and unprofessionally as we did the last three wars. He, therefore, called for an immediate change of command at the GHQ insisting that President Gen Pervez Musharraf should appoint a full-time Chief of Army Staff and restore full democracy in the country.

He suggested appointment of an independent chief election commissioner in consultation with all the political parties. “Look at India. There a religious party comes in power and nobody cries foul and it goes out of power and nobody alleges rigging.

We can also do this,” he added. And we must make unified efforts to restore the country in the vision of the Quaid-i-Azam. Turn it into a non-theocratic and truly democratic state. And all the three forces should model themselves on the lines set by Asghar Khan when he was commanding the PAF, he suggested.

Well, I am late enough on this and everything else that came out this week so I am just going to try

Well, I am late enough on this and everything else that came out this week so I am just going to try to get everything written up before the next episode is released, which is my mini mission for the next day and a half. As for the HIMYM premier, I thought it was pretty awesome. The jokes were strong and Robin and Barney make the cutest couple! I actually watched this episode twice to absorb fully everything in it. This episode basically centered around two stories. The first being Ted and worrying over his first day at being a teacher, which ended into a terrible disaster before it got better. After worrying for days, he finally made it into his classroom, which wasn’t actually his, but really an Economics class by his mistake. So for a full 7 minutes you watched his painful attempt to first of all decide whether he wanted to be a strict teacher or someone laid back (T-Dog), which was just so hilarious! All turned out well though, when he ran to his real class 20 minutes late. The Indiana Jones jokes that came along the way to Ted’s struggle was also very entertaining.

The second story of the episode was between Robin and Barney and how they should defy their relationship with “the talk”. Neither of them want to have it though, but Lily forces them too by sticking them into a room, which they lie to get themselves out how they are really boyfriend and girlfriend. Though, to quote Lily although they may have been lying, they were only lying to themselves because they knew they loved one another, which was an adorable scene where Barney and Robin were walking away together for brunch while holding hands!

Anyway, this was a great episode and leaves me so excited for the rest of the season! I wonder what will happen to Barney and Robin’s relationship, they can do so much with it for the fifth season of this amazing show, so I wonder what the writers plan on doing with them. Actually, I was watching season 3 with some of my friends and I realized that this really is a show that does not appeal to guys as much. I don’t see how considering it is just so hilarious, but at least in the case of my guy friends, they did not find it as entertaining. Of course they still laughed at funny moments, but maybe I am only getting this impression from them because we watched A LOT of episodes so by the fifth episode in a row, they were not as in the mood. Anyway, I wonder what everyone else has to say about that…What I’m looking to see in this season is some sort of development between Marshall and Lily, they are too one dimensional at the moment and they are going to need some more depth, but I like how they are in the meantime.

So, what do you think will happen to Barney and Robin in this season?
What do you want to see happen in this season?

Episode Rating: 8.8/10

There’s a rumor circulating around twitter and the blogosphere about Eminem dying in a car crash today. It’s getting so much attention that it’s one of the most searched phrases today. So, in a manner of speaking out, we have to put in our two cents. Also, we have heard the rumor and got real excited that karma actually works. But, the truth is we never address Eminem here because we don’t like prejudice and bigotry. So, if he is really deceased now this would be one of the few cases where we don’t mourn. He advocated the killing of a women. He promotes violence against women, gays and lesbians. He hates everyone, including black women, and then brands himself a pioneer in rap. He is just an all-around nasty person. Even if he slams some great rap, how can one like the content if it is that hateful?

Michelle Malkin

My friend Andrew drew my attention to Michelle Malkin’s most recent column. It’s a must-read!

Michelle starts by talking about two murders that occurred at almost the same time. Which one was more important to Obama and the left-wing media, and why?

She writes:

When a right-wing Christian vigilante kills, millions of fingers pull the trigger. When a left-wing Muslim vigilante kills, he kills alone. These are the instantly ossifying narratives in the Sunday shooting death of Kansas late-term abortionist George Tiller versus the Monday shootings of two Arkansas military recruiters.

Tiller’s suspected murderer, Scott Roeder, was white, Christian, anti-government, and anti-abortion. The gunman in the military recruiting center attack, Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, was black, a Muslim convert, anti-military, and anti-American. Both crimes are despicable, cowardly acts of domestic terrorism. But the disparate treatment of the two brutal cases by both the White House and the media is striking.

In the column Michelle notes the following differences between the two stories:

Obama issued a statement condemning the murderer of the abortionist, but not the murder of the military recruiters

The Justice Department dispatched federal marshals to protect abortion clinics, not military recruitment offices

The left-wing media labeled the murderer of the abortion doctor a terrorist, not the murderer of the military recruiters

The left-wing media blamed conservative media for one murder, but militant Islam was not blamed for the other murders

Michelle asks what Obama had to say about the deaths of two of our brave soldiers:

…President Obama said nothing. The Justice Department was mum. And so were the legions of finger-pointing pundits happily convicting the pro-life movement and every right-leaning writer on the planet of contributing to the murder of George Tiller. Obama’s omission, it should be noted, comes just a few weeks after he failed to mention the Bronx jihadi plot to bomb synagogues and a National Guard airbase during his speech on homeland security.

She goes on to catalog some more incidents showing where the real threat of domestic terrorism lies. Most of them I had never even heard of. It just goes to show you that some victims are more equal than others, especially when you are trying to squash down the good and lift up the evil – so that the distinctions that make people able to judge others will be demolished. Abortion good, patriotism bad. Feminism good, military service bad.

Watch this video with Evan Sayet and you’ll learn how the secular-left thinks.

Another video by Evan Sayet is linked here.

We need to understand how it has become possible for the secular-left to be viewed as “moral” while faithful conservatives are viewed as “immoral”. One worldview views the universe as an accident and human rights as fictions. The other believes that God grounds human rights and that every person has a purpose that makes them valuable: to know God.

UPDATE: Nice Deb says that the anti-war left is to blame for the death of the military recruiters. Turnabout is fair play. She has a lot more at that link, too.

It’s raining today in London, the kind of grey drizzle rain that doesn’t really mean it.

It’s raining today in London, the kind of grey drizzle rain that doesn’t really mean it. It’s like laying cling film over the sky.

It reminded me of something I keep meaning to blog about. Three Days of Rain, starring James McAvoy, Lindsey Marshal and Nigel Harman has just finished it’s run at the Apollo.

And some of the reviews it received I felt were out of proportion. I saw the show twice, once from the balcony and the second time from the stalls thanks to a discount offer on tickets. And I thought it was possibly one of the best plays I’ve ever seen.

Much of the criticism revolves around the first half, and the idea that the critic preferred the 1999 version at the Donmar with Colin Firth, because it was more contained. I didn’t see the original, so I’ll not comment. But I felt the first half was a carefully poised piece of theatre. The audience was caught up in the movement of the language, which was powerfully executed. Plenty of newspaper critics complained of shouting. I believe the word dynamism suits better. McAvoy plays a character who is a pent-up frustrated fireball of energy, (self)destructive and yet simultaneously vulnerable and afraid. I thought all the actors well balanced their characters, which were well developed and lines were delivered on cue. There’s a danger that Nan, Marshal’s character, will get lost between the bickering of the two men. Which, is of course, the one thing Marshal expertly avoids; she draws out her character, teasing out the relations between each of the character and one hundred percent refuses to disappear. But the star of the first half for me was Nigel Harman. I remembered him from his Eastenders days and went in with deep reservations about his performance – and left overwhelmingly impressed. Every little nuance, every shred of humour, he captured and showed candidly. He was excellent.

The most upsetting thing I read was one review accusing McAvoy of stumbling over his lines. This made me so angry - his character, Walker, is the son of a man with a stutter, and rather than a fumbling it was the clever presentation of geneology in his performance. The play is centred on ideas of structure – two characters are architects, and a key symbol of The House runs throughout, and we run backwards starting with the present as a kind of hangover from a misunderstood past. It contrasts the past and present, reveals the tensions and mistakes the generations make about it each other, and is an overwhelming theme in both this production and that actual playtext itself. McAvoy’s delivery of his lines in the first half wasn’t the clumsiness of an amateurish film actor used to cushy jobs that was desperately trying to keep up on stage. Rather, it was the result of a production that had been given the thought it deserved, in terms of characterisation and development, not just the delivery of lines. Apart from anything else, this should have been made clear by the second act, where McAvoy plays said stutterer – superbly, I may add. As I found when I acted a part with a stutter (in a production of Blue Remembered Hills) you’ll learn that to act with a stutter is one of the most alienating things to try and capture on stage. It is completely against the grain of everything you should be doing, and yet he pulled it off with finesse.

The second half is the one most reviewers direct their attention to, so I shall just mention the really salient points for me. Some critics attempted to use it as a means of suggesting that the only thing the production was good for was showing off McAvoy’s talent. And, undoubtedly, he is an incredibly talented individual. But so were the other two thirds of the cast. We return to the past and things unravel. We see the father, Ned, struggling with his inability to express himself, which McAvoy portrays with tenderness and gentility, not the harsh separation with which Walker describes his father. Ned admits his incapability to deal with children, the way he cannot muster enthusiasm to praise basic learning curves such as counting. We begin to see where Walker’s insecurities may stem from. And yet, in Ned’s long description of the flaneur we also see his aspirations, his yearning for something better. And that he names his son Walker, like walker, like flaneur, is telling of emotions he could never quite reveal to his son. And McAvoy delivers this line without the too-telling style of many actors who know that their line is important. So much so, that it is a connection within the script easily missed. Furthermore, we see Walker’s articulation in a new light – he is a character who is well-read and well-spoken, with arched sentence structures and frequent references, most clearly in my mind to Hegel, philosopher – when placed in contrast to Ned’s well-thought out speech as his line, “I don’t waste words, I can’t afford to.” The only time he loses his control over speech is during an argument, and then his stutter comes forth; the face swells, and you can almost see his chest swell with frustration, as he just can’t quite force out the words. The vulnerability of both characters shines through thanks to McAvoy’s careful handling of them.

One aspect of set design I feel I should mention after my time spent backstage, is the rain. Director Jamie Lloyd picks up on the rain as a key feature of the play, which keeps people apart and simultaneously draws them together, as the natural aspects of the world infiltrate Manhattan. Designer Soutra Gilmour put a deep grill downstage and water falls from the ceiling into the grill, screening everything behind to the audience, furthering the metaphor of the text into a physical part of the stage. I think that’s a key part of putting on a show; remembering the beauty in the language of the writer. So many directors forget this.

Regardless of fools writing for newspapers, I thought this was one of the best plays I’ve seen in a good long time. It was production that drew out the humour without giving itself over to comedy; the key points of tension, of pain and drama between the charcters stay there, residual and powerful. There were times where I had a lump in my throat, times when my cheeks ached from laughing, and the actors managed the lightening strike transitions between the two with prowess. A wonderful, evocative and crafted production by all involved. I could have happily watched it every single night it played.
