Quella qui riportata è un’immagine di un’opera di Picasso: Due Personaggi (1934) che si trova al Mart, il museo di arte moderna di Rovereto (TN) che dedica una galleria ai capolavori di arte moderna del museo di Winterthur. Oggi sono stato a vedere la galleria… non male, calcolando che non sono un appassionato di questo tipo di pittura, devo ammettere che le opere esposte non sono d’avvero niente male. Ma guardando quest’opera mi sembrava ci fosse qualcosa di strano…. notate niente di famigliare?
L’icona del Finder di Macintosh sembrerebbe molto simile al viso di uno dei personaggi dell’opera del pittore spagnolo… Inizialmente mi son detto che non era possibile… non ho mai sentito un richiamo del genere e poi di sicuro qualcuno avrebbe conosciuto la storia… ma girando per internet non sembra esserci corrispondenza tra le cose… o almeno… nessuno lo ha detto in rete….

Ripensandoci però può non essere un fatto così strano… è ormai risaputa la stravaganza dei fondatori di Apple…. e di certo lo stesso logo della ditta non nega il fatto che possano aver avuto strane idee nella creazione dei loro loghi…

Non saprei, la mia è una supposizione, ma in fondo non del tutto immotivata… se qualcuno conosce la risposta fatemelo sapere… o nel remoto caso che Steve Jobs legga questo blog… beh… faccia sapere al mondo se è un appassionato di Picasso.

The picture reported here is a work made by Picasso: “Two Characters” (1934), located at the MART, the Museum of Modern Art in Rovereto (TN), which dedicates a gallery to the masterpieces of modern art of the museum of Winterthur. Today I’ve visited the gallery … and even though I’m not a fan of this type of art, I have to admit that the works are not bad at all. But looking at those I felt there was something strange …. Do you notice anything familiar?

The icon of the Macintosh Finder seems very similar to the face of one of the characters of the work of the Spanish artist … Initially I told myself that it wasn’t possible … I’ve never heard about that and anyway someone would know the story for sure … but on the internet there seems to be no correspondence between these things … or at least … No one has mentioned it in the network ….

However, It’s not that weird thinking about it … the extravagance of the Apple’s founders is known of course …. and certainly the same company logo does not deny the fact that they’ve had strange ideas for the creation of their logo, too …

I don’t know, I make a not entirely groundless guess … if anyone knows the answer please let me know … or iif there’s a remote chance that Steve Jobs reads this blog … Well … He should let  the world know if he is a fan of Picasso.

We’ve all had our run-ins with Jagermeister…and for me, I can barely *smell* the pungent anise without wanting to hurl (this also goes for Red Bull…the first half of my 21st birthday was spent slammin’ jag bombs; the second was tasting them come back up).

Which made me a little leery of a honey jagermeister–Bärenjäger–but its soft, wine cask-y casing put me at ease, as did the golden color (no  heavy blackness and residual anise smell).  And the taste? Phenomenal–sweet but not syrup-y or overly sugar-y, with a nice consistency that makes it ideal to drink alone or mix.

History
The word ‘Bärenjäger’ means bear hunter in German.  In medieval times, bear hunters would protect their families by enticing the bears with  meschkinnes. Meschkinnes is a mead-like moonshine made by bee keepers and farmers which was irresistible to bears and humans alike.

In the 15th  century, the Teucke and Konig Bear Trap Company created the first professionally produced meschkiness: Bärenjäger. And it’ s still made with natural ingredients using the same methods.

Bärenfang?
Bärenfang and Bärenjäger are the same thing (translation-wise, the first means “bear trap”). Referring to all German honey-flavored vodka-based liqueur as Bärenjäger is like referring to all tissues as Kleenex.

Since variations on the basic recipe and ingredients are readily available, many people make their own.  Most use vodka as a base, but Everclear is another popular alternative.

For recipes using Bärenjäger, check out their website.  They’re all good…except for the the Red Bären, which calls for Red Bull. There’s just some experiences that can’t be erased.

Canada’s top court has ruled that Wal-Mart Canada Corp. had the right to shut down a store in Quebec that had been unionized seven months earlier.(CBC)

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled Friday that Wal-Mart Canada Corp. was within its rights when it shut down a store in Jonquière, Que., that had been unionized seven months earlier.

“As of now, the highest court in the land has looked at this, as have other courts, and have said that as unfortunate as the situation was, Wal-Mart was not in the wrong to do what it did,” said Andrew Pelletier, vice-president of corporate affairs for Wal-Mart Canada.

In two related decisions, the country’s top court split 6-3 both times in favour of the company.

In September 2004, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 503, was certified to represent employees of the Wal-Mart store in Jonquière. However, attempts to reach a collective agreement failed.

On Feb, 9, 2005, the contract issue was sent to arbitration, but that same day, Wal-Mart told the workers it was closing the store. The store eventually closed on April 29, 2005, putting approximately 190 employees out of work.

The company said the store wasn’t profitable, but appellants said the employer shut it down in response to the labour dispute.

In the case of Gaétan Plourde against the company, he had argued that he lost his job at the store because of his union activities. However, the Supreme Court concurred with earlier decisions by Quebec’s Commission des relations du travail (CRT), the Quebec Superior Court and the Quebec Court of Appeal in ruling in favour of the company.

In the case of Johanne Desbiens, Ingrid Ratté and Claudine Beaumont against the company, the majority of the Supreme Court justices found that the Quebec Court of Appeal erred when it overturned a decision of the Commission des relations du travail.

However, as Justice William Binnie wrote in the majority Supreme Court opinion, as a practical matter it would be a waste of the parties? time and money to send the case back to the CRT.

“The outcome would not be in doubt,” Binnie wrote. “The Jonquière store is closed and there is no possibility of reinstatement of the employees.”

Bernard Philion, a Montreal lawyer who pled the case for some former Wal-Mart employees, said the court’s ruling is disappointing for his clients. But he said some employees do plan on arguing their case under other provisions in the labour law in Quebec’s Superior Court.

“They have other recourses pending and I think that this decision gives them great possibilities,” he said.

Louis Bolduc of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union also said the top court’s decision opened a door because a labour board will now be able to investigate the reasons for store closures.

“If we can prove the reasons are anti-union then we can sue for damages,” he said in a Montreal interview.

Sirli ärkas laupäeva hommikul Raplas, kusagil tänava nurgas… Tal polnud ei kõneaega, ei raha ja põhimõtteliselt oli ta nii mälleris, et ei teadnud kustkohas ta üldse oli ! Selline oli siis meie Sirliga ennustus laupäevasele päevale =D, tegelt ärkas ta Mardi voodis, ristipidi (wtfff?!?!), kus ‘MUIDUGI’ puudus Mart… jjj-aah. Jube huumor – (Tänane õnnelause: Huumori täielik puudumine muudab elu võimatuks). Huumor mis huumor. Masendav oli tagasi koju sõita. Tahaks kaissu tagasi..

Several weeks ago I met one amazing guy. I am sure many of you know him because he loves to travel…

Our first meeting was nearby the Faculty of World Languages in Osh. He was somewhat shy and, as I discovered later, in the same pair of jeans he wears every day. I remember he was surrounded by girls, but I had an impression that he was far away from them at the same time…

Seems we have got much in common. That’s why I think we work at the same wavelength. We had discussed lots of things, shared tons of movies and swam across coupla seas of beers…

Once I introduced him to my cousin and she gave him a nickname “клёвый чувак” and we call him like this very often since then…

He is a very generous person. We often go out to eat something and I wish I could treat him some day also…

I didn’t think that our relationship will lasts for several weeks. But now I am sure it will be long-term friendship…

That “cool dude” is from Holland. He studies human geography. And his name is Mart, as he himself often says “как месяц Март”…

Goose Island Belgians in stock as of 9.7.09

We have great relationship with Goose Island and their rep, Jory Hanson, who always makes the extra effort to do tastings, dinners, and any other gimmick we can come up with to promote his beers.

For those of you unfamiliar with this Chicago brew, Goose Island began brewing in 1988, when the craft brew-style was still fairly underground.  Today, Goose Island has expanded into 2 brewpubs, over 50 different styles and exports to 15 states and the United Kingdom.

The 3 beers we’re showcasing today–Matilda, Pere Jacques, and Sofie–are fairly new to Chicone’s.  All 3 are variations on traditional Belgian styles and subscribe to the Belgian theory on beer–meaning that presentation is just as important as taste, and each can be “cellared” (recommended flavor is 5 years).  For more on Belgians and other styles, check out our site.
