The second to last book in the Chronicles of Narnia takes Eustace, known to readers of “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” and his classmate Jill on a perilous quest. Prince Rilian, the son of King Caspian, has been missing for years and must be found before the king dies.

As most of the books in the Narnia series, this one also begins and ends in the prosaic world of England, more specifically in a “progressive” school (that the narrator openly derides) attended by Eustace. Eustace has definitely improved after his adventures in Narnia, and while he helps his schoolmate Jill escape from a gang of bullies, the two of them suddenly discover a door that leads into Narnia. The boy and the girl soon become separated, and Jill has to overcome her fears when she encounters a lion, who of course turns out to be Aslan. Aslan sends them to search for Prince Rilian, the only son of the now aged Caspian (as we know from previous books, time flows at a different rate in Narnia) and gives Jill certain instructions and clues, which she unfortunately will not always remember.

During their journey, the two are accompanied by another of Lewis’ memorable and odd characters, Puddleglum the Marshwiggle, who despite his innate pessimism turns out to be a true friend. They encounter the mysterious Lady of the Green Kirtle who directs them to the City of Giants. Let it just be mentioned that they are supposed to play a rather peculiar role at a great feast there…

In the last chapters of this heavily allegorical book, the protagonists descend into an underworld, meet Prince Rilian who has been obviously bewitched and have to overcome the danger of materialism when they are pressured to deny the existence of Aslan and the “overworld”. Only then can they reascend into Narnia.

“The Silver Chair” is not one of the best books in the Chronicles of Narnia. Readers of the other volumes will find certain events rather predictable. Eustace and Jill never become the rounded characters that Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy were. Only the strange Marshwiggle shows some of Lewis’ old creativity in creating odd and memorable creatures.

Er was mij gevraagd om Koninklijk Alfabeteur te worden.. Albert belde me hierover omdat den Yves wéér eerste minister wil worden nu de Van Rompuy Europees president wordt..

Mijn functie zou zijn om het gebrabbel van Martens en co in duidelijke verstaanbare taal om te zetten.. dit was nodig omdat geen kat nog begreep waar ze het in MijnNaam over hadden.. De koning smeekte en smeekte.. hij was zelfs bereidt om Fabiola ritueel te offeren.. maar ge kent mij.. ik ben ne eenvoudige mensch.. en heb gezegd dat als ze al eens naar de coiffeur zou gaan ik al content zou zijn.. alleen de puntjes er afbeitelen  ofzo.. een madameke op die leeftijd moet nu ook niemeer gaan experimenteren met nieuwe kapseltjes.. nee..

Ik heb overwogen en besloten om het niet te doen.. Den Albert was lichtjes teleurgesteld.. en Paola vloog me daar in een Italiaanse colére.. daar kunnen de Fransen nog iets van leren.. ik ben er nog nie goed van.. in ieder geval weet ik wel dat het momenteel vrij stillekes is op het Paleis..

Ik heb wel voorgesteld om op den Yves zijn geiten te gaan passen.. en de kindjes van Martens eens bij te houden als het nodig is.. tzijn altijd de kindjes en de geitjes die de dupe zijn.. ocharm.. 

En daarbij ik heb werk genoeg.. met vanalles en mezelf.. ik zal me nog is gaan bezig houden met zever in pakskes naar iets deftig om te zetten.. ik ben Sinterklaas niet hé..  of toch nie altijd..

Gedetacheerde van het stadsbestuur, Ingrid Smitt, en Sarah Martens, zijn nu tot na de Virga Jessefeesten in augustus 2010 werkzaam op het organisatiesecretariaat op het Jeneverplein. Ingrid heeft al gewerkt in alle Hasseltse musea en kent het wereldje van de musea op haar duimpje. Sarah Martens werkt als gafisch vormgeefster en houdt zich vooral bezig met alles wat te maken heeft met het grafisch gedeelte van de organisatie.

Ingrid Smitt werkt fulltime op het secretariaat en doet computerwerk, het onthaal van mensen met vragen, die ze tracht te beantwoorden, en verkoopt ook onder andere VJF-vlaggen, Virga Jessebeelden en Virga Jesseroosjes. Haar inzet voor het secretariaat geeft haar veel genoegdoening. “Naarmate de VJF naderen, voelen we de druk op het secretariaat ook toenemen. Niet alleen wij voelen dat, maar ook alle deelnemers en vrijwilligers die zich bezighouden met de voorbereidingen hebben hetzelfde gevoel. Immers acht van de tien rotten zijn al intens bezig met de opbouw van hun straatversiering en ook de andere werkgroepen en parochies zitten niet stil”, aldus Ingrid Smitt.

Sarah Martens

Sarah Martens werkte al als vrijwilliger tijdens de voorbereiding van de vorige editie van de VJF voor de communicatie en het kledingatelier. Nu heeft ze een halftijds statuut en geeft Ingrid deels administratieve ondersteuning. “Ik heb gestudeerd als grafisch vormgeefster en houd me vooral bezig met de grafische kant van de organisatie. Zo houd ik de VJF-website up-to-date, ontwerp ik de lay-out van de Jobel en de flyers. Ook de mooie blauw-witte bekleding aan de ramen van het secretariaat op het Jeneverplein is van mijn hand”, getuigt Sarah.

Awesome Dr Martens… I wants… but not for £95 haha!

Glow in the dark… who can argue with glow in the dark bones! They would be amazing for Halloween tomorrow…

Speaking of Halloween, I am off shopping with Lauren and Vawn tomorrow to find a costume… I have no idea what I am going to be, but it should be interesting! We went to Costa on Wednesday with Dave, and I got a huge hot chocolate and a chocolate muffin. Then we went to the pet shop and I wanted to buy all the hamsters! I think I have an obsession with the little fur-balls. One of my goldfish isn’t very well at the moment, but I am feeding it peas, in the hope that it farts and sorts out its swim bladder….

Now… How adorable is this shower head! A little piggy with suction pads on the back to stick to the wall… the only thing I would change would be to have more settings for the water flow, like more shower heads these days.

Other things I have found super cute (well maybe not all cute, but interesting) in the last few days are:

1. Polaroid instant printer… basically, if these images come out with a high quality then it is amazing and a very cheap price! An alternative (if not quite aesthetically pleasing) to the traditional polaroid picture, this could be my new favourite gadget…

2. A USB neg scanner…. although it only scans up to 5mpx, and the highest machine doesn’t connect to Mac… this could be useful when funds are low for image printing. If a higher res scanner came out for the same price, I’m there!

3. Gorgeous apple shaped note pad…. and for only around £3 you cant really go wrong.

4. Pet camera: WANTS.. when I get a bunny and a kitten they are both having one, then a competition will commence for the greatest pet photographer. Watch this space…

5. The Moller Skycar M400 – for £324000, its either the best invention ever, or the stupidest investment one could make.

6. Waterproof casing for your compact camera, does exactly what it says on the tin.

Also, while searching though the Daily Dose of Imagery from Top Right Pixel, I found the most amazing images and videos of a thunderstorm over Toronto. Check out the link to see it, I think it is beautiful.

Tonight, Ryan and Justin are over, playing the new GTA DLC, ‘The Ballad of Gay Tony’. So far it is pretty funny. I have also sessioned more COD:WaW today, and I honestly think I am doing quite well, seeing as I am a girl who doesn’t often play first person shooters.

I am going to stop writing, so I can drink more wine without typing with one hand! I hope everyone enjoys Halloween tomorrow…

Never been to Camden before. I had previously avoided the place because I got the impression it was wasteman central – full of Doherty and Winehouse types. In fact, it wasn’t. It was, however, very touristy – with a vast array of London trinket stalls all run by Turkish and Greek guys. What delicious irony!

Most of them sold the Trilby hats, the chains, the whispy ‘independent’ clothing…Everything you need to become ‘different’ and ‘arty’ [/cynicism]

C’est la saison des collaborations fructueuse, cette fois ci ce sont Dr Martens et Jean-Paul Gauthier qui s’associent. Le retour du punk est une des tendances incontournables de l’automne-hiver 2009-2010 : cuir, zips, clous, grunge et… Dr Martens. Les mythiques chaussures orthopédiques de notre adolescence semblent être une source d’inspiration sans limite pour les créateurs : Raf Simons, Comptoir des Cotonniers et maintenant Jean Paul Gaultier. L’enfant terrible de la mode a revisité un modèle culte de Dr Martens : la 14 eye boot en cuir ajouré façon résille. Chacune des bottes est unisexe et disponible en cuir noir ou blanc à 295 euros. L’esprit déjanté du créateur ne s’est pas arrêté là puisqu’il a également imaginé un modèle de cuissardes Dr Martens en uir vernis noir. Un prototype non commercialisé mais que l’on peut voir porté par Lara Stone dans le Vogue d’octobre, en kiosque depuis le 28 septembre.

Even though I don’t wear leather I do have the ability to see beyond that and I can appreciate the beauty of a garment, shoes or whatever! I spend hours looking at some amazing Fendi shoes a few years ago trying to convince myself it was just a by product of the food industry! Luckily at the end I have seen the light and did not get the shoes. In this case I do see that the Raf Simons Doc Marten is actually pretty cool and if there was a vegan version of it I would go to buy it righ now. The fact is that to make them they had to kill a cow and as far as I am concerned that’s a price I am not willing to pay! Luckily Vegetarian shoes does a very cute version of it for 100 quid less! Is completely guilt free and if the rest of your outfit is supercool you can make it work anyway! You can find the the ones I will definitely gonna get at www.vegetarianshoes.co.uk. As for the raf Simons ones go and find them yourself! 

Desbocados, sesión de fotos de "Nunca nos fuimos"

No fuimos prolijos en palabras y menos en explicaciones. Ni siquiera dijimos adiós. Tal y como dijo Sergio Marcos, “nos vamos con el mismo silencio con el que vinimos”.

Desde hace un par de meses Desbocados dejaron de ensayar, de componer, de tener, en definitiva, una razón de ser. Dejamos atrás 12 años de historia, de conciertos y de millones de anécdotas (no descarto publicar alguna aquí, ya que hay como para escribir un libro). Nos abandonamos a la deriva, desmotivados por querer luchar contra unos elementos desfavorables para el Rock (no diría tanto para el Rock and Roll).

Y me dio pena, mucha pena. Tengo una caja llena de discos que no vendimos, unos cuantos conciertos en los que no tocamos, y un puñado de canciones que bien le podrían haber gustado a alguien si hubiera tenido la oportunidad de escucharlas.

Me quedo con muchos recuerdos y algunas satisfacciones, como la de, después de un concierto, ser parado por alguien a quien no conocía, y ser reconocido con las palabras que más pueden gustar a alguien que toca: “me ha gustado mucho esa canción”.

Pero si hay algo con lo que me quedo es con toda la gente que he tenido la oportunidad de conocer, y a la que, desde aquí, rindo homenaje desde lo más hondo de mi corazón.

What are on your feet right now? Are you sporting a nice pair of sneakers, or possibly a new pair of clogs? Maybe you’re a flip-flop kind of individual, or prefer a high heel with everything. Then again you could be prancing around in your bare feet. Most of the time I wear flip flops, but for going out you can’t beat a good quality pair of boots.

Okay, well unless you’re Huck Finn himself, you’re probably enjoying some kind of fine footwear. As for me, I only wear one kind of shoe when I am going out around town and I sport it year-round. Actually to be more precise, it’s not a shoe at all. It’s a pair of Dr. Martens boots. I am in love with these things. They offer everything thing I need from a fine pair of footwear, and nothing is missing. How comfortable are your feet now days?

It all started back when I was 25 years old. I was out strolling through the mall for a new pair of shoes. You see, I never wore sneakers at all. I simply don’t care for them. Eventually I spotted a rack full of boots. Dr. Martens boots caught my attention specifically. I wasn’t too into the Timberland style. Then I decided to give the boot thing a shot. So I tried on a current pair of dr martens boots. These babies were the bomb. I had never experienced such comfort before. Needless to say, I purchased them immediately. I was all excited going back home in my new Dr. Martens boots. This was going to be a serious thing for me; I could tell. Now, five years down the road, I still only wear and enjoy Dr. Martens boots.

That first pair lasted three years. That’s not bad for 100 bucks. Then I purchased two new pair, one black and one brown, to suit all occasions. I’ve had both for two years now, and neither look old. Heck, the soles aren’t even starting to wear out yet. I believe I am hooked on Dr. Martens boots for life. They truly are the only footwear I own. How long does a typical pair of your shoes last? I look at how often I buy my son sneakers and dress shoes, and they don’t hold a candle next to Dr. Martens boots. They’re simply not built tough. Furthermore, I can use my Dr. Martens boots in virtually any atmosphere. Whether I’m walking the city streets, hiking through the local mountains, shoveling snow in the winter, or digging out a massive tree stump; I’ve done it all in a pair of “Docs”. Not to mention they are dressy enough to go out in, regardless of your destination.

The reason they are worn so much is that they are actually a very comfortable fit and there is very few footwear on the market that is so versatile. People will go out to the pub with them on, to clubs and college.

Van alle beelden die ik van hem ken, vind ik dit nog altijd het boeiendste. Die broek vol goesting, dat rare masker dat de vrouw links van hem voorhoudt, die scruffy bontmantel die het kader binnenduikt,… Ik kwam de foto zaterdag toevallig opnieuw tegen in Oostende. De maker ervan heeft gelijk: “Je ziet Arno als het ware stotteren”.

O ja. Wie je daar in Oostende ook ziet stotteren – of is het (kw)ijlen? – , is Wilfried Martens. De fotograaf (vergeten wie) heeft hem voor een groot raam met fel tegenlicht gezet, in een stoel die hij net onder de gebogen armleuingen kadreert. Het lijkt wel Martens op zijn oude dag, in een rolstoel en met de blik van iemand die de nakende seniliteit recht in de ogen kijkt. Aan de 2.000 euro alimentatiegeld kan het niet gelegen hebben, want de foto is al meer dan 10 jaar oud.

where his work as well as sketches on costumes for the theatre were on display for the first time in Asia… and magnificent pieces such as this floaty, abstract tulle piece attached to a corset and worn over pants, as well as  various poofy crinoline creations which seem to defy all forms of gravity.

Il legamento crociato del portierone rossonero ha fatto crac durante la gara vinta per cinque a uno a Siena. Probabili sei mesi di stop per l’estremo difensore rossonero.

E’ stata confemata la gravità dell’infortunio che, nel momento in cui il portiere del Milan, Christian Abbiati, veniva trasportato fuori in barella, era apparso già serio. La conferma arriva da un comunicato ufficiale del club rossonero: “L’AC Milan comunica che il calciatore Christian Abbiati è stato sottoposto ad Anversa a visita specialistica dal prof. Martens. Il controllo ha confermato la diagnosi e la complessa tipologia di infortunio. Abbiati svolgerà riabilitazione per due-tre settimane, per poi tornare in Belgio dove verrà sottoposto ad intervento chirurgico“. Si parla di rottura del crociato e di una riabilitazione lunga (sei mesi per il recupero pieno del giocatore) per il numero uno del club di Via Turati. Davvero sfortunato, il quasi 32enne portiere di Abbiategrasso che, fino alla partita con i toscani, era stato autore di una stagione di grande livello, tra i pali della porta milanista.

Today, Hartmarx Corporation and 51 affiliates filed voluntary chapter 11 bankruptcy petitions in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  The companies are headquartered in Chicago and are represented by Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

According to a press release issued by the company, Hartmarx manufactures and markets apparel under its own brands, including Hart Schaffner Marx, Hickey-Freeman, Palm Beach, Coppley, Monarchy, Manchester Escapes, Society Brand, Racquet Club, Naturalife, Pusser’s of the West Indies, Brannoch, Sansabelt, Exclusively Misook, Barrie Pace, Eye, Christopher Blue, Worn, One Girl Who . . . and b.chyll. Hartmarx also has licensing rights to market apparel and other products under a number of other brands such as Austin Reed, Burberry (men’s tailored clothing), Ted Baker, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Claiborne, Pierre Cardin, Lyle & Scott, Golden Bear, Jag and Dr. Martens.

With respect to the reasons that a bankruptcy filing was necessary, Hartmarx stated the following: “[t]he filing is principally the result of the substantial decline in discretionary apparel purchases by consumers and by the Company’s retail customers, particularly at the luxury price points, coupled with the significant contraction in borrowing capacity under the Company’s senior credit facility.”  As for Hartmarx’s prospects for reorganization, the company further stated the following: “[t]he Company intends to continue operating its business in the normal course as management focuses on developing and executing a restructuring plan, which may include the sale of substantially all of its assets.”

In order to finance its operations during the chapter 11 cases, Hartmarx has obtained up to $160 million of pre-petition commitments as a debtor-in-possession (DIP) credit facility from its pre-bankruptcy lenders.

Het lijkt wel alsof het koninklijk paleis van Laken dezer dagen dienst doet als dierentuin. Oude krokodillen als Martens verschijnen aan de poorten, de naam van Jean-Luc “the beast” Dehaene circuleren om Leterme op te volgen, een fossiel als Van Rompuy is precies ook goed om de zaak recht te trekken. Zoals vandaag te horen was op TerZake: “Dit is niet Werchter, dit is Rimpelrock.” Het lijkt wel alsof ze in Laken hun adressenboekje niet meer vernieuwd hebben na de laatste regering van Dehaene. Om dan vervolgens te denken; “Hmm, welke politicus, die minstens al tien jaar van het Vlaamse of Belgische niveau is verdwenen, kunnen we nog zoal bellen?”  Al hoop ik oprecht dat men niet zo redeneert, want dan staat binnen de korste keren Tindemans terug aan de poorten.

De analyse die in Terzake werd gemaakt, is echter voor een deel correct. Het zijn de politici van de vorige generatie die als enigen nog Belgisch kunnen denken en handelen. De rest heeft hun machtsbasis op een regionale basis opgebouwd, zeker bij CD&V is dit merkbaar. Banden met CDH hebben zich de laatste jaren beperkt tot “Stop met uw NON!” en het zijn enkel de liberalen nog die, puur uit machtspolitieke overwegingen, nog Belgisch denken.

De sociaal-democraten weten het allemaal niet meer zo goed. Ze willen deelnemen aan de regering, althans toch de mensen rond Vande Lanotte, maar hebben een tijdje geleden wel zowat de regering en haar (weinige) beleidsmaatregelen tot op de grond afgebroken. De openVLD had gelijk met te stellen dat de SP.a een bocht aan het nemen is die men op Francorchamps niet durft nemen uit veiligheidsoverwegingne. PS weet het allemaal niet meer zo goed, ze willen niet in de regering, ze willen niet in de oppositie. Ze willen niet met Reynders regeren, ze willen hem echter ook niet het staatsmanschap gunnen.

En nu is “koninklijk verkenner ” Wilfried Martens uitgestuurd. Niet om een regering te vormen, maar om het “veld te verkennen.” Eerder om de gemoederen bedaren en om tijd te kopen. Maar wie moet in godsnaam die regering gaan rechttrekken en wie moet dan in die regering komen? De CD&V-kopstukken willen zich er niet meer mee moeien, de SP.a zal enkel meedoen als de “aangebrande” liberale ministers niet meer meedoen, wat dan weer onaanvaardbaar is voor de liberalen en ga zo nog maar een tijdje door.

Nee, het is genoeg geweest. Ontbind dit land gewoon. Het is duidelijk geworden dat enkel de oude fossielen nog denken op een Belgisch niveau. “Sterft gij oude vormen en gedachten” indachtig, zeg ik; “Sterft, Belgische staat, zodat dit geknoei eindelijk kan stoppen.”

Le premier ministre belge Yves Leterme et son gouvernement ont démissionné vendredi 19 décembre. Le roi des Belges Albert II a accepté cette démission hier lundi 22 décembre mais n’a nommé aucun successeur, faute de trouver une personnalité faisant consensus. Il a confié à l’ancien premier ministre Wilfried Martens (chrétien-démocrate flamand comme Yves Leterme, et qui était à la tête du gouvernement de 1979 à 1992), une mission de consultations pour former un nouveau gouvernement.

Alors que son mandat courait jusqu’en 2011, Yves Leterme, 48 ans, a démissionné à la suite de son implication dans l’« affaire Fortis », du nom de la banque belgo-néerlandaise. Il a affirmé qu’il ne jouerait aucun rôle dans un prochain gouvernement.

Elu en juin 2007 sur des promesses de croissance et d’indépendance accrue pour les Flammands, Yves Leterme a mis neuf mois à réussir à former un gouvernement (lire l’info du jour du 19 décembre 2007). En septembre 2008, il a essayé de sauver la banque Fortis en injectant 4,7 milliards d’euros en échange d’une prise de participation à hauteur de 49 %. Puis, en octobre, il a décidé de vendre la banque et son volet d’assurance (toujours entièrement privé) à BNP Paribas pour 14,5 milliards d’euros.

Les actionnaires minoritaires de la branche assurance ont cependant bloqué l’opération, estimant qu’ils ont été court-circuités dans le processus de démantèlement de Fortis. Des membres du cabinet d’Yves Leterme auraient fait pression sur la justice d’abord en approchant un représentant du parquet du tribunal de commerce, puis en appel, en approchant cette fois le conjoint de la juge en charge de l’affaire. C’est la cour de Cassation qui a mis cette affaire en lumière, indiquant qu’elle a des « indications importantes » mais pas de « preuves juridiques ». Yves Leterme a nié toute pression personnelle sur la justice.

C’est le flamand Herman Van Rompuy, âgé de 61 ans et considéré comme étant modéré, qui a finalement été désigné dimanche 28 décembre pour former un nouveau gouvernement.

Deze week deed het weekblad Knack behoorlijk wat stof opwaaien in het politieke landschap. Er stond een heel item in over de ‘zogezegde’ liefdesaffaire tussen Vlaams Belangers Frank Vanhecke en Marie-Rose Morel. Beide protagonisten schreeuwden moord en brand, dreigden met klachten en wisten ook meteen wie dit alles had georchestreerd.

Dat Morel en Vanhecke een relatie zouden hebben (gehad) is een publiek geheim. Vraag het aan journalisten die in de Wetstraat kamperen en ze kunnen dit gerucht bevestigen. Los daarvan is de vraag of het écht zo is geweest hier totaal irrelevant. Ik ben een rabiate tegenstander van alles waar Vlaams Belang voor staat, maar ik vraag me wel af welke zin dit soort journalistiek heeft? Wie heeft er baat bij? Welke meerwaarde biedt het? Ik dacht dat men politici beoordeelde op hun mérites, niet op hun privéleven.

Er zijn nogal wat politici die affaires hebben met collega’s, huwelijken die op de klippen lopen e.d. In het verleden kregen o.a. Patrick Dewael, Rik Daems, Freya Van den Bossche en co ermee te maken. Onlangs was er zelfs eens positiever nieuws te rapen toen eeuwige tortelduifjes Wilfried Martens en Miet Smet met elkaar in het huwelijksbootje stapten. Dat Knack meestapt in dit soort journalistiek verbaast me eerlijk gezegd een beetje. Ik had dit eerder van Story, Dag Allemaal en aanverwanten verwacht.

Gisteravond mochten Vanhecke en Morel het bij Ivan De Vadder en Kathleen Cools gaan uitleggen in ‘De keien van de Wetstraat’. Gisteravond zat ik in leukere oorden, maar vandaag heb ik de uitzending nog eens bekeken. Ik onthou vooral dat Jurgen Verstrepen een leuk Sinterklaascadeautje in het verschiet heeft (als we zwarte piet Vanhecke mogen geloven), dat Knack een ranzig pornomagazine is (dat vindt Alexandra Colen trouwens al jaren maar dit geheel terzijde) en dat ze allebei strijdvaardiger zijn dan ooit. Helemaal off-topic ook nog even melden dat we vanavond onze kwisoverwinning van vorig jaar verdedigen in Zonhoven op de jaarlijkse SJB-quiz. De omgeving is weer helemaal hepatitisvrij heeft men ons beloofd, dus dat kan al niet meer stuk. Benieuwd hoe we het er vanaf brengen vanavond.

UPDATE

Uiteindelijk zijn we na een sterke remonte in de SJB-quiz nog 3de kunnen worden op 6 punten van de uiteindelijke winnaar. Genoeg reden in ieder geval om met de helft van de ploeg nog tot 2u30 pinten te gaan pakken in de ‘Quo Vadis’ in Zonhoven achteraf.
