Voy a atreverme a hacer una lista con las Top  10 canciones que todo mod que se precie consideraría un himno. Aunque, seguramente, este riesgo generará controversia entre los que todavía persiguen “La Vida Total”. Incluyo temas del movimiento en sus inicios, la primera etapa de los felices 60, como del revival surgido a caballo entre los 70 y los 80.

Y, por supuesto, si eres un Mod de raza y no encuentras tu himno en la lista, harás muy bien en dejárnoslo clarito vía comentario….

Ahí van los primeros cinco temas del Top 10 “Himnos Mod”

1. Chris Farlowe & The Thunderbirds – “Buzz With The Fuzz”

Farlowe empezó a finales de los 50 en un grupo de skiffle, aunque lo que le hizo popular fue su versión de la stoniana “Out Of Time”. En plena efervescencia mod (del 60 al 66), Farlowe y los Thunderbirds publicaron “Buzz With The Fuzz” (cara A) con “You’re The One” (cara B).

El sonido jazzistico con Chris hablando más que cantando y los sonidos de sirena fueron muy rompedores en la época. Pero su disquera, Columbia, retiró el single nada más salir a la venta, temerosos de que se malinterpretara como contenido sexual el título de la canción. Sólo por esta anécdota, y también por la dificultad de coleccionista que supone conseguir un ejemplar, los mods más puristas lo consideran su himno.

2. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles – “Going To A Go-Go”

Un hit de R&B de los muchos que publicó el sello Tambla grabado en el 65 por los Miracles. Bobby Rogers, uno de su coautores y miembro de la banda, dijo que se inspiraron en el éxito que en aquellos años tuvieron los clubs de go-gos en Norteamérica.

3. The Marvelettes – “I’ll Keep Holding On”

También éxito de la Tambla, las Marvelettes fueron el primer grupo de chicas de éxito de la Motown. Una de las curiosidades de la canción es que es una de las pocas caras A cantada por Wanda Young, en lugar de la habitual Gladys Horton. Pero, en realidad se convirtió en un himno mod con el cover que hicieron los británicos The Action, una de las bandas de culto entre los mods face.

4. Martha Reeves & the Vandellas – “Nowhere To Run”

La canción está en una de esas lista que hace la revista Rolling Stones de los “tropecientos what-ever de tu vida”. Concretamente en las “500 mejores canciones de todos los tiempos”. Parece ser que también estaba entre las favoritas de los soldados yankees en Vietnam.

5. The Who – “My Generation”

¿Y qué se puede decir de este temazo que no se haya dicho ya? La voz de Daltrey imitando un “globo” de dexedrina (Dexys). “The Kids Are Alright” es otra canción de la época que también podría estar en esta lista de himnos. En fin, de los Who casi cualquier tema… hasta los Stones han reconocido que son el mejor directo de todos los tiempos.

**Historical notes**:
This special was mainly Dusty Springfield’s idea, to promote the Motown music and artists to a wider audience in Britain. Dusty was an occasional presenter of the weekly TV pop show Ready Steady Go (which had the tag line… The Weekend Starts Here). She was a big fan of Motown music, and suggested the idea for this special to Vicki Wickham, recording artists manager and RSG’s producer at Rediffusion.
This followed the Motown artists first tour of Britain in March 1965, which had suffered poor ticket sales and played to half empty theatres. The timing of the tour proved to be too early. The Motown artists were not well known in Britain (apart from the ‘in’ crowd) due to limited exposure on UK radio at the time. But the bosses at Rediffusion TV had to be persuaded to allow this special to be made. It’s thought that it was Dusty Springfield’s inclusion in the show which sealed it – but still a brave decision for the time. The TV special was very successful and is historically important as it did a lot to popularise Motown with a mass audience in the UK. If this TV special had been made before the tour, rather than after the tour – it could have made a big difference to ticket sales.

Let’s hope that this show (and other surviving RSG footage) one day gets a DVD release. It’s now been over 20 years since anything’s been heard or seen of these shows. The “Rediffusion London” TV station ceased to exist after July 1968, when the franchise for commercial TV in the London region changed. Sadly, only a handful of their music shows have survived. Most of the RSG shows are now lost to history.

Ah, summer! ugh, humidity! Whether you love the summer sun and fun or you suffer from the summertime blues, there’s a song for it. It seems that of the four seasons, summer, and its related activities, is the subject of the most songs. This theory excludes the genre of holiday songs, where winter is often mentioned. I’ve chosen some off the top of my head and welcome more suggestions from you.
