Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen as Holly and Kit in Malick’s masterwork Badlands (1973). Warren

Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen as Holly and Kit in Malick’s masterwork Badlands (1973). Warren Oates as her father.

Holly practices her clarinet on a bench, waiting for her father. Her father pulls up. They go home. Holly goes upstairs. Her boyfriend Kit comes over. He and her father have words. Kit shoots Holly’s father.

Having come down the stairs, Holly goes to her father’s side.

Kit watches and lights a cigarette.

She knows her father is going to die and that Kit has shot him, and she is not really shocked or reproachful, per se. It’s difficult to judge whether Holly is an unthinking person or if she is a person who just floats — don’t be fooled by her voice-over narration; Malick plays with contrasts between what’s reported and what we actually observe — through her life, someone who expects nothing and accepts everything.

Either way her father’s death is not a surprise. But because she expects nothing, she isn’t sure what Kit will do next. She is only slightly afraid that he might do something to her. You can read that here.

What Kit does next is he goes to a service station to get a can of gasoline. There is a coin-operated game there, a voice-recorder. He punches through the glass of the game. This act of time-consuming vandalism when he is trying to quickly throw together a plan to conceal a crime is open to interpretation: Kit either makes his own fun, or he cannot brook the bourgeois notion that some witless rube, some fool who has wandered a million years afield from the purpose of man as a hunter, might pay to have his own voice recorded, then, by hearing it played back, feel delight worth the coin he paid. Or maybe Kit has different ideas of how to make a mark, and what ought be recorded. I don’t know. I’m not Kit, and I don’t know Malick and his mind. This is guesswork. Kit leaves with his gas.

He uses the gas to douse Holly’s house, with her father’s corpse still inside.

Holly watches. Darkness is all around her and she is only lit by the lights from within the house. She is getting ready to turn her back on that light, and go in to the dark completely. She’ll go with Kit now.

The fire that began in Holly’s bed is about to consume their entire house. It was a choice that started there and now she has no choice but to go forward with Kit.

Malick handles the destruction of Holly’s house and her father’s body by focusing on the doll and the dollhouse as they burn. This is important. The end of small-minded, cast-mold imitations of real life, the end of modeled and scaled efforts at simulated perfection, leaving innocence behind in ashes. What now, Holly?

I will tell you what now. They leave Fort Dupree, South Dakota, and embark on a several-state killing spree before being captured. Really disturbing, incredibly-acted, understated film, almost totally perfect, and very gorgeous from the compositional perspective. A mixed bag. You very much need to be in the right mood.

The film drew inspiration from the real story of mass killer Charles Starkweather and his teenaged accomplice, Caril Ann Fugate, who killed eleven people in Nebraska and Wyoming in January, 1958. Besides Malick’s Badlands, the pair of jerkwad murderers also inspired Natural Born Killers, the 1993 Tim Roth and Fairuza Balk TV mini-series Murders in the Heartland and, though I have never heard it confirmed, rather obviously and less seriously The Frighteners. Starkweather also pops up in works by Stephen King. That’s all I want to say about it. Go look it up if you want more.

I don’t feel like going in to all that partner-killer, famous-murder-spree, monstrous fucking shit right now. I will just say I have not grown into an adult who — nor an adult with the patience to tolerate another adult who — makes a huge to-do over killers. Exceedingly not. It’s why I didn’t even link you up with a wiki hook to that asshole Starkweather and his girl. So please don’t start in on me with factoids or comments about them, thinking we’re buddies-in-kink, if searching for killers because that’s how you get your kicks is how you found this post.

I’m not saying it’s not worth talking or thinking about — anyone with a stake in the success of society as a cooperative effort needs to worry and think and talk about people who break the rules, how they do it, why, and how we deal with it. But glorification and gory gushing on the intricacies of those transgressor’s little personal details? Making them celebrities while forgetting their victims’ names? Not interested.

Since it’s Thanksgiving weekend over the Pond, Classic Clip Friday this week celebrates a few

Since it’s Thanksgiving weekend over the Pond, Classic Clip Friday this week celebrates a few memorable scenes from the best Thanksgiving episodes of a few of my favourite TV shows (or, at least, the ones I could find online) .

We’ll start with the greatest thanksgiving scene in TV history. I already dedicated a complete post to the Turkey drop scene from WKRP In Cincinnati but it’s well worth revisiting, especially given the time of year.

To set it up, you should know that WKRP’s manager, Arthur Carlson (Gordon Jump) had decided to organise a special Thanksgiving promotion, to try and boost the radio station’s profile, but hadn’t told anyone what it was – just that he needed 20 live turkeys.

Les Nessman (Richard Sanders), a somewhat less than worldly-wise news reporter - whose serious, professional demeanour belied the fact that he was utterly useless - is sent to a shopping mall to cover the event:

Next up, a couple of great scenes from the much-missed The West Wing. First, President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) talks turkey with the Butterball Hotline:

But he’s just a big softy, really, and so when called on to ”pardon” a turkey…

Moving on, now, one of the greatest TV shows of all time and another of the all-time great Thanksgiving episodes. Here’s what happened when the Cheers gang decided to have their meal together on the big day:

And finally, Friends, a show that always pushed the boat out to deliver some great Thanksgiving episodes… and this one, with a very special guest star, was probably the most famous of the lot:

I saw her standin’ on her front lawn just twirlin’ her baton
Me and her went for a ride sir and ten innocent people died

From the town of Lincoln Nebraska with a sawed-off .410 on my lap
Through to the badlands of Wyoming I killed everything in my path

I can’t say that I’m sorry for the things that we done
At least for a little while sir me and her we had us some fun

The jury brought in a guilty verdict and the judge he sentenced me to death

Midnight in a prison storeroom with leather straps across my chest

Sheriff when the man pulls that switch sir and snaps my poor neck back
You make sure my pretty baby is sittin’ right there on my lap

They declared me unfit to live said into that great void my soul’d be hurled
They wanted to know why I did what I did
Well sir I guess there’s just a meanness in this world

I’m sure I wasn’t the only member of Team Edward that could really care less about Edward last night during the midnight showing.

Arriving in the line at 5pm may have created the greatest build up pf anticipation that I have EVER experienced for a midnight showing…and I have been to countless. In all honesty, I did not expect New Moon to be good after the disappointing premiere of Twilight last year. But Chris Weitz, a fantastic director, gave me hope that maybe I didn’t have to worry.

After 6 1/2 hours in line, we were finally let into the theater, and I found my way inbetween two great movie watchers, one of them in particular.

Knowing the story of the book, I had no idea how Chris Weitz was going to create something fabulous, especially with an actor playing Jacob that I didn’t necessarily like. But he did. I will never doubt Taylor Lautner again, in anything that I ever see him in for the rest of my life.

Not only did this film have an actual storyline, unlike Twilight, because of the leaps and bounds the script has over the first, the acting is also better. After Twilight, you never would have known that Kristen Stewart, Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are a group of very talented actors. ESPECIALLY Taylor.

We all know how the story ends, and who Bella chooses. But…just…WOW. I would never have found the strength to say ”No” to Jacob like she does countless times. And I’m not just talking about the abs, although…I’m sure they play a part. LOL. Taylor interprets Jake’s desperate love for Bella just PERFECTLY.

He doesn’t even need the words to describe it. Just the looks on his face tell the audience all we need to know. The way that he naturally takes her hand at the movie theater and almost kisses her in the truck….then DOES in the house right before Edward calls! (I was literally holding my breath screaming “YES!” in my head…then hated Edward for the rest of the movie) And when he whispers that sentence in his peoples language to her right before he kisses her….mmmmm….I seriously, melted! Melted into complete mush in my seat. LOL

Okay…done talking about Taylor. For the moment.

It is beyond obvious that the quality of writing in New Moon is in another league compared to the disaster that Twilight was. As I said before, better writing automatically creates better acting performances. As an aspiring screenwriter myself, I know at least that much about the film industry. And with no more exact scenes being pulled directly out of the book, but being CREATED for the big screen…the audience and fans of the books finally get what we already should have had with the Twilight.

But the one thing that was directly from the book that I was glad to see, was the passage of time after Edward left. That part in the book shocked me…and the way that it is shown in the movie…with camera circling around Bella as we see the change in season out the window…was PERFECT. I loved it.

I am still astonished about how Chris Weitz was able to put together such a good film version of the book that many would say the slowest, and maybe even worst of the books. Although for me, Breaking Dawn holds the title of my least favorite for the books, I do have to agree that New Moon is the slowest paced book of the series. And it just shows how much of a great storyteller Chris Weitz is to be able to pick and choose all of the RIGHT things from the book and presenting them in a way that a MOVIE needs to, not a book. That was the problem with Twilight. They were trying to make it TOO MUCH like the book, and because of that, the story was way over the top, and failed miserably to capture the fan’s hearts.

But New Moon will not have that problem. It has not only renewed faith in all Twilighters that these films don’t have to disappoint. That the stories of the books can be made into a GREAT MOVIE.

I can honestly say that I believe New Moon is as great of a version of the books as both of the Narnia movies. So close to the story told in the books that I can almost find nothing that is missing. Everything that I wanted to see…I saw.

My greatest concern with New Moon was whether the audience would get over the absense of the Cullens. But the relatiohship and conflict between Jake and Bella is writing and shown so well, the audience doesn’t even give a second thought to the Cullens. Not even Edward, in most cases.

And where Twilight was failed miserably with dorky special effects, those in New Moon far from disappoint. Not only did the wolves look KICK ASS period, but their transformations were FANTASTIC and believeable. And the fight scene with the Volturi are just a taste of what we will get in Eclipse.

Speaking of….the Volturi. Exaclty what I always pictured. Michael Sheen was a perfect Aro and Dakota Fanning a perfect Jane. A VERY CREEPY Jane. The girl sitting next to me asked why she dressed like a little girl, with the schooly uniform and shoes….BECAUSE CREEPY KIDS MAKE MY SKIN CRAWL…LOL…I believe that was the point.

All in all…a fantastic film. I loved it…and plan on seeing it many times over. In fact, I’m going again in a few hours…LOL…with a new Jacob Shirt…LOL

Of vindt u Major League, Scary Movie 3 & 4, Hot Shots en de tv-serie Two and a Half Men om mee uit
Het is nog onduidelijk of de naamsverandering van de familie Estévez voor een groter succes heeft gezorgd. Ik kan het eens proberen en zelf een artiestennaam zoeken. Estévez misschien ?

East Wing Martini

My mind tends to work in strange and mysterious ways. Not all of them logical. Few of them, in fact. First thing I thought of when I saw the name of this cocktail was the old West Wing TV series. I loved that show, at least in the earlier years. I didn’t watch much of the last season or two. It lost a lot of charm for me after Aaron Sorkin left the show, some of the spark just wasn’t there anymore. And of course my conservative boyfriend hated it, a bunch of Democrats spouting off every week. I suppose for me it was a fictional respite from the very long years of the Bush administration … one could tune in once a week and think, “if only …” (if only our President actually had a brain! if only somebody like Leo McGarry really existed in the Oval Office! if only Toby Ziegler would try smiling for just one episode!) and so on. But after all this reminiscing, I realized I really know little to nothing about the “East Wing” of the White House. Assuming that’s what this drink is named after. WHY it would be named after it is another matter entirely. I’m not going to go there because I have no clue. It’s only my job to take you off to some hithertofore unexplored realms of imagination before telling you what I think of the martini I’m drinking. Hmmm. Sounds like a bartending version of The Twilight Zone. Hope that giant eyeball doesn’t start looking like a cocktail olive.

Will somebody PLEASE get Stockard Channing a martini?

The East Wing consists of 6 parts vodka, 1 part Campari, 2 parts cherry brandy, and the ubiquitous lemon twist. The East Wing of the White House is apparently where the First Lady’s office is now and where her staff works, although apparently that choice can vary from administration to administration. I couldn’t find out online whether or not that’s where Michelle Obama has her office. It seems like a long walk to work from wherever the First Family resides in the West Wing, but then again, it beats driving and she usually wears flats, so I’d give that a two thumbs-up call for commuting. Maybe this martini is considered a dignified girlie drink worthy of First Ladies and hence the name. Or someone just pulled it out of their ass. Probably the latter.

So in mixing this, my red alert flag should have gone off because I’m starting to realize that Campari is right up there with Pernod in terms of “liquor to avoid” for me. Although it isn’t nearly as strong. It just doesn’t blow my skirt up, though. But for having one part Campari to 6 parts vodka, this was far more palatable to me than the equivalent proportion of Pernod would have been. I shudder at the mere thought. This is a lovely shade of reddish gold with a hint of pink to it, a very pretty drink, and the cherry brandy (I used Bols, I’ll be honest that prior to now I never knew what “Bols” made, I’d just heard the name as some kind of liqueur but it never clicked) mollified that bitter/herb bite of the Campari. A tad more cherry brandy and a bit less Campari and this might be just right for me. In this form, I would actually give it 3.5 stars – it was good. Much better than I expected. Worth sampling again in 2010.

Cheers,
Cathy

The film, which traces the origins of global poverty back to the Age of Exploration, offers a reason for hope: things might soon get so bad that the impoverished will rise up in armed rebellion.

The documentary, narrated by Martin Sheen, argues that economic imperialism is the cause of widespread poverty in the Southern Hemisphere. According to the film, international economic policymakers at the IMF and World Bank ransom the natural resources of poorer countries, using coercive loans and crushing debt. At the same time, “structural violence” left over from colonialism has rendered these nations helpless, passive witnesses to their own despoliation. More>

Much discussion ensues as Sam tries to extol the virtues of Ingmar Bergman, praise the magical realism of Billy Liar and attempt to make sense of All About Lily Chou-Chou.

I love the theatre and was recently fortunate enough to have the chance to watch two great American actors at work. The play ‘A short wake’ is set in a New-York funeral parlour, and focuses on two estranged brothers who are re-united at their father’s wake. The play is wonderful, funny, sometimes dark and laced with numerous expletives. Both actors were wonderful, and had the audience mesmerised throughout.

Afterwards, I managed to interview the stars, Joe Estevaz and Nick Hardin. Joe Estevaz is a veteran actor with 160 films, over 50 plays and his own TV show to his name. He comes from a legendary acting family, Brother of Martin Sheen and uncle to Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen. While Nick Hardin, a New-Yorker, now living in Ballymoney, is also a veteran with an equally successful career. Both actors are extremely proud of their Irish connections and were delighted to be appearing on the Irish stage. Joe, whose mother is from Tipperary, carries an Irish passport and Nick is married to a woman from Ballyshannon. Nick, who has visited Donegal many times, spoke of his fondness for the County and suggested that ‘Even God himself has a holiday home in Donegal’. I’m not sure if he was suggesting that Donegal was heaven, or was hinting at the condition of planning permission in Donegal. At the end of the interview, Joe said that as his grandmother’s maiden name was Duffy, (I’m not sure if I believe him!) and as we were practically ‘cousins’ that I should come to the closing party afterwards. Unfortunately, I had other plans- But I think I might use that line in the future. ‘Joe Estevaz and Martin Sheen are cousins of mine’. Well, practically.

Brilliant. Time to talk about our Ten lists once more, so settle in for the long haul and try and keep up. Much discussion ensues as Sam tries to extol the virtues of Ingmar Bergman, praise the magical realism of Billy Liar and attempt to make sense of All About Lily Chou-Chou. John continues the theme, causing slight, though understandable, consternation with his uncensored views on Raging Bull and confessions of multiple tears during Schindler’s List. Tom rounds the night off in business-like fashion with praise for The 400 Blows, controversial dislike for the second half of Stalker and man-crushed love for Le Samourai.

Mired in production difficulties and problems from day one, 1970’s Catch-22 manages to be an entertaining, black comedy about war and the absurdity involved with it. Mike Nichols took on the task of bringing Joseph Heller’s brilliant novel to the screen, but Buck Henry tinkered with the book so much that much of it was almost unrecognizable on screen. Nevertheless, Heller approved of the finished product.

That’s not to say many others did, however, as the picture didn’t do well at all with critics or at the box office. It is now seen as somewhat of a cult film. There is some good stuff in Catch-22, even if there isn’t really a discernable cohesive narrative or thread to follow. The characters are entertaining, the script is witty and entertaining, and the tone of the movie is deeply sardonic and rich with dark humour.

Alan Arkin stars as Captain Yossarian, a U.S. Army bombardier stationed in Pianosa during World War II. He is continually dispatched on dangerous missions and watches his friends die. The whole thing is driving him a little bit crazy, so he tries to escape combat duties. The problem is the “catch-22” employed by the army: a pilot is crazy to fly more missions but sane if he doesn’t want to and the only way to be grounded is to be determined crazy. In other words, flying the missions would prove the man to be crazy, but asking not to fly them would only prove sanity and, thus, would mean more missions.

Nichols’ film becomes concerned with how various people cope with such convoluted logic. We explore various characters along with Yossarian, including Lt. Milo Minderbinder (Jon Voight) and his bizarre black market scheme, Major Major (Bob Newhart) and his inability to do his newly-assigned job, and Captain “Aarfy Aardvark” (Charles Grodin) and his commission of murder.

Catch-22 had some difficulty going up against MASH in 1970 and was Paramount’s big gamble against the powerhouse picture from Robert Altman. Catch-22 tried largely to bank on star power, using the likes of Anthony Perkins, Art Garfunkel, Orson Welles, and Martin Sheen in the picture. In the end, it was the lack of cohesive narrative that probably cost it the most, as it can be a little hard to follow with its reliance on flashbacks and bizarre sequences.

In that respect, though, Nichols does capture the absurdity of the war. His use of strangely convoluted logical corners and David Watkin’s cinematography make for interesting aspects, helping drive the movie into some truly odd places. Newhart’s performance, for instance, is devilishly comic and reinforces the sense of incompetence flowing through this particular military base. Keep an eye out for the changing pictures on the wall in Major Major’s new office, too.

Of course, doing justice to Heller’s peculiar tour de force is going to be an uphill climb and Nichols’ picture doesn’t quite do it. While Heller’s novel was so batshit crazy that it made sense, Nichols’ movie adaptation doesn’t quite work with the ultimate irrationality of the concept of the catch-22. Instead, it takes bits and pieces from the book and attempts to find its own ground. It makes nothing out of Yossarian’s insane insanity, choosing instead to play it extraordinarily straight in a sea of absurd supporting characters.

That said, there are still plenty of reasons to check out Catch-22. The performances are solid from top to bottom, even if they do employ many of the anti-war movie stereotypes from time to time, and the cinematography and meshing of the violent with the comically absurd is worth a look as well. Nichols certainly doesn’t knock this one out of the park, but there’s enough goofy, bizarre fun within Catch-22 to make it worthy of a recommendation.
