It’s been almost seven years since Massive Attack released their last studio album 100th Window, which featured guest vocals from Sinéad O’Connor and Damon Albarn among others, so the February 2010 release of the long-awaited Heligoland is bound to attract a lot of attention. As usual, the remaining founding members Robert del Naja and Grant Marshall have lined up a stellar cast of vocalists to give the album a boost, including Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Elbow’s Guy Garvey and TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, plus the return of Horace Andy and Damon Albarn. Produced by Neil Davidge, the album also features DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy and Portishead’s Adrian Utley on guitar. Songs from recording sessions with Dot Allison, Beth Orton, Elizabeth Fraser and touring vocalist Stephanie Dosen didn’t make the final cut.

Martina Topley-Bird, que ontem (e sábado) fez a primeira parte do concerto dos Massive Attack, no Campo Pequeno, e fez os vocais de alguns dos clássicos da banda, como “Teardrop”.

Ex-colaboradora de Tricky (outro senhor do trip-hop britânico), esta cantora tem uma voz… grande, grande, grande.

Elle ferma le robinet dont l’eau s’échappait à gros bouillons, passa dans la chambre, ouvrit le petit ordinateur et démarra la mélopée qui épousait si bien la torpeur qu’elle sentait poindre là tout au fond, insidieuse envahissante… souhaitée.

Domenica scorsa sono andato al concerto dei Massive Attack… fiiikkoo.
Beh a dir la verità non sono il mio gruppo preferito, anzi conoscerò si e no 2-3 canzoni, ma veramente un concerto piacevolissimo, da ascoltare e guardare magari anche da seduti, un po’ come fosse un concerto di musica classica!
Il gruppo spalla era una certa Martina Topley Bird, a me fino a domenica sconosciuta, ma cavoli una sorpresa paurosa…

C’era una volta Mei in una città. C’erano dei panzerotti buonissimi, la pioggia, un ostello carino, un ombrello colorato, un amico buffo e uno Starbuck’s fasullo. La valle degli Emo, il crodino da 1/2 litro, la fermata Bande Nere, il QT8, avanti e indietro da – e verso Lampugnano, un cappello grigio perso allo spizzico e uno nero recuperato al negozio di fronte, le ciambelle alla cioccolata come quelle di Cooper, il duomo, i balletti scemi, un viaggio accartocciato in autobus e un sacco di ammòre. E in mezzo a tutto questo anche i Massive Attack.

Poi un lunedì c’era Mei tornata dalla città, che cercava di scrivere qualcosa ma dopo lavoro e corso era troppo stanca, allora scarabocchiò questo intruglio solo per lasciare un piccolo segno di tutto quello che nei giorni prima era stato.

Ringraziando, ovviamente, chi di dovere.

Rosicando ancora per essermeli persi in modo vergognoso l’anno scorso a Piazzola sul Brenta, ecco finalmente l’occasione di godermi dal vivo i Massive Attack nella data milanese del loro tour 2009!

Dopo una breve attesa sotto la pioggia, verso le 18:45 si aprono i cancelli: mentre il Palasharp si affolla lentamente (fino a riempirsi completamente, visto il sold-out dei biglietti), il soundcheck viene accompagnato da un ottimo dj set trip-hop/reggae, che propone anche alcuni interessanti megamix di brani famosi. L’atmosfera inizia a scaldarsi verso le 20:30, quando entra in scena Martina Topley Bird, nuova vocalist della formazione di Bristol: una coinvolgente esibizione di una mezz’oretta in cui propone brani del suo eclettico repertorio solista, che viaggia fra momenti molto noir e trip-hop fino ed altri rock e quasi country; aiutata dal suo fido ninja polistrumentista (che non si risparmia di passare dalla chitarra alla batteria ed altri strumenti “meno convenzionali”), Martina crea giochi vocali veramente accattivanti con la loop station, e non manca di autocitarsi cantando anche Overcome di Tricky. Da tenere assolutamente d’occhio. (foto 1 2 3)

Una breve pausa, ed è finalmente il momento della band di Bristol. Dopo un’introduzione strumentale dei musicisti (basso, chitarra, console, batteria e batteria elettrica), fanno il loro ingresso 3D e Daddy G proponendo due brani inediti: con loro si alternaneranno sul palco, oltre alla già citata Martina Topley Bird, anche il leggendario Horace Andy e la cantante soul Deborah Miller. Cinque vocalists differentissimi fra loro: mentre Daddy G è il “figo di turno” col suo look da ghetto ed il suo timbro bassissimo, Horace Andy stupisce con la sua pace interiore ed il suo falsetto ad occhi chiusi, 3D si scatena sul palco come un ragazzino da boy-band brit-pop, Martina è affascinante con la sua voce un po’ roca ed il suo abbigliamento “esotico” e Deborah emoziona coi suoi potentissimi vocalizzi. E proprio quest’ultima fa le veci di Shara Nelson nell’interpretare splendidamente Safe From Harm e Unfinished Sympathy.(foto 1 2 3 4 5 6)

Un grandissimo spettacolo di musica e giochi di luci: l’ovattato sound di Future Proof si trasforma magicamente in un deflagrante intermezzo di tiratissimo rock, ed il cupo groove tribale di Risingson e Mezzanine non lascia scampo, così come il ritmo ondulante di Splitting The Atom, e coinvolge in pubblico in una danza lenta e sensuale, inframezzata da brani d’ascolto come Psyche. Sullo schermo dietro il palco scorrono immagini, frasi e pensieri (come in Marakesh e 16 Seeter: non sempre tradotte benissimo in realtà…), ed i riflettori creano atmosfere davvero evocative (foto 1 2 3 4 5 6 7): memorabile la versione iperminimale della celebre Teardrop, fatta solo del battito di cassa che l’ha resa famosa, del pulito arpeggio di chitarra e della voce di Martina, con raggi luminosi che verso la fine trafiggono l’oscurità della sala e lentamente scendono verso il pubblico. Indimenticabili anche le interpretazioni di Horace Andy in Angel e di 3D in Inertia Creeps: davvero un’ottima scaletta, anche se forse avrebbero meritato anche brani come What Your Soul Sings, Dissolved Girl e Group Four, probabilmente non eseguiti per la mancanza di una vocalist à la Elizabeth Fraser/Sinead O’Connor. Chiude l’esibizione l’immancabile Karmacoma, col ritornello cantato a squarciagola da tutto il pubblico. (foto 1 2 3 4)

Due ore di grande musica in cui perdono senso ogni etichetta culturale ed ogni preconcetto: un’incredibile esibizione di una formazione che ha saputo, e sa tutt’ora, cambiare ed esplorare nuovi orizzonti mantenendo sempre lo stesso inimitabile stile. Una prova dal vivo che, assieme all’EP appena uscito, non può che far attendere con ansia il nuovo disco previsto per l’anno prossimo. Grazie Massive Attack.

“Do Ceske Republiky se vraci Massive Attack” – głosiły materiały promujące występ trip-hopowej legendy w Pradze. Niestety, tego samego nie można było napisać po polsku w kontekście wizyty zespołu nad Wisłą. Z racji tego, że 3D i Daddy G pięknym łukiem (Niemcy-Czechy-Słowacja) ominęli nasz kraj reprezentacja 80bpm.net w postaci mojej skromnej osoby 3. listopada stawiła się w stolicy Czech, aby sprawdzić, jak rok od pamiętnego koncertu w Gdyni prezentuje się forma jednej z najważniejszych brytyjskich formacji.

Mój wybór padł na Pragę. Nie tylko ze względu na magię tego miejsca i czysty sentyment, jakim je darzę. Nie lada gratką tego występu była jego lokalizacja w przepięknej sali Lucerna, która gwarantowała względnie kameralny nastrój wieczoru. Mając w pamięci koncert na dużej, festiwalowej przestrzeni, byłem ciekaw, jak Massive Attack wystąpią w miejscu będącym w stanie pomieścić zaledwie 2000 osób. Kolejnym faktem przemawiającym na korzyść Pragi jest niewątpliwie moment, w którym Massive Attack zawitało do stolicy Czech. Nie był to początek trasy, więc bristolska maszyna koncertowa zdołała się już rozkręcić (zespołowi towarzyszyły drobne problemy techniczne w trakcie pierwszych występów), ani jej koniec, kiedy cały skład może być już nieco przemęczony. Można by jeszcze długo tak dywagować, ale najważniejsze, że trafiłem na ten koncert i że mogę teraz podzielić się z Wami wrażeniami na ten temat.

Miłym bonusem do występów Massive Attack w trakcie obecnej trasy jest support i gościnny udział Martiny Topley-Bird. To zaskakujące, że musieliśmy czekać tak długo na współpracę tych dwóch trip-hopowych tuzów. Krótkie, bo półgodzinne otwarcie w wykonaniu Martiny i towarzyszącego jej Fergusa Gerranda w stroju ninja, doprowadziło niemal do zatracenie resztek mojego obiektywizmu przy ocenianiu tej wokalistki. Martina dała się poznać jako ciepła i czarująca osoba, zaś jej wokal na żywo prezentuje się wyśmienicie. Niestety, jej pomysł na występy jest (przynajmniej dla mnie) zbyt oszczędny. Do wykonania utworów z ostatniej płyty przydałby się cały komplet muzyków, a tak wszystko spoczęło na barkach rzeczonej dwójki. Mimo, że czuję pewien niedosyt tak skromnymi aranżacjami i brakiem “Black Steel” (obecnego w ostatnich setlistach), to nie mogę nie wspomnieć o kilku momentach, które zrobiły na mnie bardzo pozytywne wrażenie. Pierwszym z nich było nastrojowe wykonanie ballady “Sandpaper Kisses” i towarzyszące mu zaklinanie publiczności grzechotką. Równie ciekawie prezentował się kolejny utwór z “Quixotic”: “Ilya”, do którego podkład stanowił zapętlony na żywo wokal Martiny. Wreszcie ostatnia prosta w postaci odmienionego “Poison” i mocnego, gitarowego “Too Tough to Die” zdołała nieco rozruszać zgromadzoną publiczność.

Chwilę później na scenę wkroczyli keybordzista John Baggott oraz nowy narybek w postaci perkusisty Juliena Browna, aby zagrać świetny opener, jakim jest instrumentalna wersja „Bulletproof Love” (na całe szczęście o niebo lepsza od tej znanej z epki “Splitting the Atom”), który przeszła w “Heartcliff Star” z 3D i Daddy’m G za mikrofonami. Wystarczy rzucić okiem na setlistę, aby zauważyć, że drugi rok z rzędu panowie grają va banque i decydują się na spore zagęszczenie premierowych kompozycji. Z poprzedniej trasy ostały się “16 Seeter” w nowej, drapieżnej aranżacji oraz “Red Light”, również odmieniona, akurat ze szkodą dla tej kompozycji. Jest jeszcze “Marakesh”, ale z poprzednią wersją łączy ją jedynie tytuł. Piosenka wykonywana przez Roberta del Naję zyskała zupełnie inne oblicze i została wybrana jako majestatyczne zamknięcie pierwszego bisu. Stricte premierowe utwory wypadają słabiej niż te prezentowane w 2008 roku, ale stanowią obietnicę dobrego albumu.

Najistotniejszą odmianą jest zmiana wokalistek. Martina Topley-Bird dosyć często przewijała się przez scenę, prezentując nowe utwory, jednak to “Teardrop” w jej wykonaniu zebrał niebywały aplauz. Nie zawaham się napisać, że piosenka ta zyskała dzięki niej zupełnie inną jakość, a nowa aranżacja (przywodząca na myśl “Black Milk”) sprawiła, że był to najbardziej wzruszający moment wieczoru. Z kolei za materiał z “Blue Lines” odpowiedzialna była Deborah Miller. Wywiązała się ze swojego zadania z nawiązką, dając dowód na ponadczasowość “Safe from Harm” i “Unfinished Sympathy”. Kolejną przyjemną niespodzianką był powrót do setlisty “100th Window”. “Future Proof” okazał się prawdziwym highlightem tego zestawu, a środkowa partia instrumentalna, w której następuje totalny chaos wprost zwalała z nóg.

Jeśli nie liczyć odświeżonych aranżacji (wydłużenie czasu trwania niektórych utworów wprowadzało w prawdziwy trans), to reszta pozostaje niezmienna. Massive Attack to już instytucja, która w trakcie poprzednich tras pozostawiła peleton elektronicznych formacji daleko w tyle. Po raz kolejny mieliśmy okazję przyglądać się profesjonalnym wizualizacjom na diodach LED wzbogacających oprawę wieczoru. Nieustannie zachwyca również silna reprezentacja utworów z kultowego “Mezzanine”. Linie basu i gitary elektrycznej stapiały się w jedną całość, nadając znanym i lubianym kompozycjom jeszcze większego pazura. Nie można przyczepić się również do nagłośnienia: czyste i jednocześnie mocne brzmienie nie wykluczały się z dobrym miejscem blisko sceny. Koncert perfekcyjny? Nie chciałbym szarżować określeniami tego typu, ale z pewnością absolutny faworyt w rankingu na najlepszy występ, jaki widziałem w tym roku.

“Jaki jest twój werdykt?” – to pytanie pojawia się w trakcie wizualizacji do “Inertia Creeps”. Nie mam żadnego problemu z odpowiedzią na to pytanie. Massive Attack stanowią klasę samą dla siebie. Wciąż zaskakują i zachwycają. Oby tylko tak dobra dyspozycja przełożyła się na album na miarę ich koncertowej formy.

Gran EP con colaboraciones jugosas

“Splitting The Atom” es el último EP de Massive Attack, cuatro pistas que anticipan el nuevo álbum del dúo. Un disco que se llamará “Weather Underground” y que está previsto que salga en el próximo año.

En “Splitting The Atom” se rodean de vocalistas de lujo, desde la increíble voz de Martina Topley-Bird hasta la voz de TV On The Radio, Tunde Adebimpe. Colaboraciones que se hacen notar y que se agradecen, son una excusa perfecta para escuchar este EP en caso de que no te atraiga demasiado.

Beats oscuros y atmosferas un tanto angustiosas, con voces misteriosas y atrayentes, un pequeño resumen de lo que “Splitting The Atom” ofrece. “Pray For Rain” es una gran canción, con la inmensa voz de Tunde Adebimpe de bandera, el ritmo y la intensidad va en progresión unido a la melodía vocal que canta el TV On The Radio, hasta que en los últimos minutos se vuelve más espacial, recordando a los últimos Delorean.

Solo cuatro canciones nos deja con ganas de más, pero eso será en la próxima década, los ¿10?

It’s been more than five years since Massive Attack has released a new album, so it’s understandable that the music blogs are all aflutter over the release this week of ‘Weather Underground’, a four song taste from what is said to be recordings destined for the trip-hop supergroup’s long-awaited fifth album. Word is the boys have been working with an A-List group of artists including Damon Albarn from Blur, Mazzy Star vocalist Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird and Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio. With that kinda talent this is gonna be one of THE albums you gotta get this year! The first song on the EP, Splitting The Atom, is an electronica lullaby that features the always outstanding vocal contributions from Horace Andy and Daddy G that is both comforting and creepy at the same time…..but it’s probably the most Massive Attack-sounding song since 1994’s ‘Protection’. Track 1 – Splitting The Atom – Featuring 3D, Daddy G and Horace Andy

Bit different to the recent Massive Attack tunes, you can tell Daddy G is back in the action. Its a slow grower, first listen sounds a bit basic, but soon grows on ya, especially Horace Andys vocals and 3Ds background banter. Added to all that, they’re having a go at the bankers, so spot on.

Track  2 – Pray For Rain – Featuring Tunde Apimpe

Laid-back track, layer of drums and a gentle bass with some good vocals. A good  track.

Track 3 – Bulletproof Love – feat. Guy Garvey (Van Rivers / The Subliminal Kid Remix)

Another laid-back track, slightly moving up-tempo from track 2, drum loops and bass line interspersed with some familiar Massive Attack soundscapes plus vocals from Elbow’s Guy Garvey.

Track 4 – Psyche Flash Treatment – feat. Martina Topley Bird

This is probably the most immediately accessible of all the tracks, with a familiar trip hop style and some good vocals from Martina Topley Bird, a trip hop stalwart. Great track.

Ascoltate, assorbite, diffondete questo pezzo. Era da tanto, tantissimo tempo, che una canzone non mi faceva venire brividi così forti.

Swiss-based Chilean – Luciano – have a number of times experimented with the long playing format. After a lengthy pause he is yet again set to release a new album – “Tribute To The Sun” – through his Cadenza label on 12th. October 2009.

Four years in the making you can safely say is a long time to be working on an album, and through some sparkling collaborations with Martina Topley-Bird (ex-Massive Attack), Senegal’s Ali Boulo Santo, Iranian percussionist Omri Hason, Swiss Hang Drummer Bruno Bieri and Liberty by Karen Ann the album is far more than just a string of club bangers.

This beautiful piece – “Celestial” – which features Liberty by Karen Ann sets the tone for the album, and over its 12′32″ mins. course you’re treated to some extremely gentle, melodic brain massage, which bears resemblance of some of the best moments from Orbital and Global Communication, in Luciano’s own way, with its subtle piano touches and choir sections.

Na EP-ce znajdą się także remiksy dwóch nowych utworów: “Psyche” z udziałem Martiny Topley-Bird w wersji Van Rivers & The Subliminal Kid (autorzy remiksów Bat For Lashes i The Big Pink), a “Bulletproof Love” z Guyem Garveyem usłyszymy w minimalistycznym ujęciu Christoffa Berga, który wraz z Van Rivers & The Subliminal Kid wyprodukował album Fever Ray.

Grupa Massive Attack opublikuje swój piąty album studyjny w lutym 2010 roku. Tym razem wśród gości znaleźli się między innymi Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Guy Garvey i Tunde Adebimpe. U boku założycieli grupy Roberta Del Naja i Granta Marshalla usłyszymy także ich wieloletniego współpracownika Horace’a Andy’ego.

W ciągu ostatnich trzech lat Robert Del Naja skomponował i wyprodukował ścieżki dźwiękowe do niezliczonych filmów fabularnych i dokumentalnych, w tym do “Trouble The Water”, “44 Inch Chest”, “In Prison My Whole Life” oraz “Gamorry”, za którą otrzymał Nagrodę im. Davida Di Donatello w kategorii Najlepszy utwór.

W tym roku Massive Attack otrzymali Nagrodę za wkład w rozwój muzyki brytyjskiej podczas rozdania nagród im. Ivora Novello.

Martina Topley-Bird: uno dei supporti più inutili della storia, non c’è molto da dire, voce e batteria senza tono ne emozione, per dare un’idea Macy Grey con giusto una rullata ogni tanto e qualche corista, stop. Ci si chiede come mai i Massive Attack abbiamo deciso di portarla in tour con loro e lasciarle scaldare (per l’incazzatura?) il pubblico… la risposta è semplice e la si scopre poco dopo, indovinate chi canta Teardrop ora?

Massive Attack: smontano e rimontano la classica struttura della canzone per creare qualcosa ogni volta sorprendente, alcune volte psichedelico, altre estremamente potente e “rockeggiante”, e ancora ipnotici come sul nuovo singolo dal nuovo EP Splitting the Atom.

Ancora non mando giù la versione molto lo-fi di Teardrop, bella eh, però l’originale è qualcosa di più di una canzone, è un anthem, un simbolo di una certa fascia sociale/anagrafica, e mettetela come volete ma i simboli non si scherza, quindi qualche limatina qua e là è permessa ma nulla di più, non a casa più di qualche fischio s’è alzato, unica macchia di un concerto stupendo sia per la musica che per il pubblico.

Vanno ricordate anche le grafiche, complimenti a chi ci ha messo mano, tecnicamente belle, estremamente dure nel messaggio sociale: extraordinary rendition to Guantanamo & so on, i ruolo dei media nell’oscurare notizie importanti come: la banca del DNA, l’introduzione di una ID card nazionale in UK, nuovi taser per la police, nuove CCTV mentre ci vengono gettate davanti ogni giorno gossip, cronaca nera fine a se stessa. Questo è quello che passa sui led alle spalle della band durante alcune canzoni. Un impegno sociale che può far storcere il naso a qualcuno ma che per me arricchisce e non sminuisce la performance, informare e divertire allo stesso tempo senza essere mai forzati è un punto a favore e non contro.

Domani e dopo si ripete sempre a Brixton, sempre sold out. Biglietto ingresso 30£ standing.

P.S. Dimenticavo: Damon Albarn (frontman Blur, Gorillaz.. dice niente?) sul palco per un paio di pezzi, cose che succedono, per fortuna!
