The building that will eventually become Patty Boom Boom (the Jamaican inspired bar from the folks from Marvin) is really looking good. For the longest time the inside looked like a complete disaster zone (this is what it looked like in May 2008 and this doesn’t even do the mess justice) so it’s nice to walk by and see something that looks a bit closer to opening. No date on when it will open to my knowledge but it’s looking like more of a reality.

TheCommitted.net is a website dedicated to Westlife media. It also has a forum that has become quite the dominant factor of the website. Kerry is not a fan of TheCommitted.net because she claims there are “bullies” there. Lets observe her claims, shall we?

4 days before Kevin’s birthday, she decided to post a little birthday topic. It was met with mixed reactions.

My favorite line is the last one. Being a background member in a boyband that crashed and burned (and where were you when that happened, Kerry?), does not make him famous in his own right. What a nice bunch of children I met today.  I really feel like Marvin van Lemon made lots of new friends at Winona Public School.  The grade 2 and 3 classes were so interested in the many sports of the winter games.  The biathlon was a new one that really seemed to peak their interest as was the way Freestyle skiiers train in a pool before they hit the slopes.   The kindergarden classes were absolutely adoreable and Ms. Hopkins sang a beautiful rendition of the “Olympics” song.  Next it’s off to the “Big Apple” for a photo shoot and to see how well some American children respond to my winter games story.

The time in Brazil was fantastic.  We were treated like absolute royalty (which suits my princess tendencies just fine) and the people on the Canadian team were fantastic.  We had 10 innovative teacher projects and 1 innovative school (Check out their project here)  It was by far the largest delegation.  I do not want to be ungrateful for the opportunity presented, but there are a a few glaring differences in the Canadian Innovative Teacher process.  Last spring through back channels and word of mouth my colleague Darlene received information about the Innovative Teachers program.  The Canadian regional lead works out of  Eastern Canada and the program is much more widely known in New Brunswick.  In fact 7 were from New Brunswick (all fantastic, inspiring people).  Nathan Toft learned of the program through a tweet on twitter.  It is not widely advertised or promoted.  When I tried to search for it on the web all I found were broken links and cryptic blog posts.  The Canadian projects had to use 1 of 4 programs/resources (Marvin, OneNote, Learning Essentials, or the Zune ).  I think this in itself really limits innovation and what can achieved by teachers.  I’m not sure how many applications there were, but 10 were selected to be implemented.

The idea is you apply in the spring, and complete the project in the fall, scrambling to get done for mid to the end of October.  I would have loved to be able to submit a project that I had been working on for a while and that had demonstrated success and innovation with students.  My work with GPS would have been a great fit, and I love to share it.  We didn’t get the Marvin software until the end of August and my tech department scrambled to get everything installed, running, and to troubleshoot the ongoing saga of audio issues.  They have been fantastic throughout the entire journey, and I owe much of my success to them.  I honestly don’t even know if they read my blog, but what you see here is always supported and made so much better with their encouragement.  I tend to get a bit excited ( I know…shocking) and will jump right into things without always looking at all perspectives, they moderate me well – even if it frustrates me at times.

This gave us a two months to learn Marvin and use it with the students.  In early October we had to submit a proof of concept.  The idea was then the Canadian finalists would be selected from there.  Often Canadian projects are showcased at the Asia Pacific Innovative Teachers Forum, but this year it was the Worldwide Innovative Teachers Forum in Salvador, Brazil.  With a stroke of luck, combined with a deal on airline tickets, all of the 10 Canadian projects were invited to go to Brazil.

This meant in the last two weeks of October we had to complete our Project VCT (which we hadn’t even heard about until then), poster, get a travel Visa (oh my what a headache), and plan for a week away from the kids.  Busy – but absolutely worth it!

Out of the 10 Canadian projects, 6 of us were using Marvin.  This led to what seemed like many great ideas that ended up grouped together.  Two of the Canadians were selected as semi-finalists.  They picked the right two.  George’s project, having at risk youth created public service announcements with the mayor of Bathhurst on Marvin, and Genevieve’s work using OneNote to help motivate and organize students with Dyslexia, were innovative and inspiring.

We were using Marvin (with a bit of OneNote and Learning Essentials thrown in for good measure).  Marvin is a program I have learned to love and hate all in the same breath.  The potential is fantastic, but it is still in its early stages with many bugs to be worked out.  Yesterday as I was using it with my students we would have to ignore avatars that gave us script errors and restart frequently.  The great part of the program is introducing students to a script based programming environment where they can develop a list of commands to achieve a goal.  Read more about our project here.

That’s the scoop on the Canadian Innovative Educators experience.  Although it is a different process it exposed me to Marvin. allowed many Canadian educators to share their innovation and learn about the innovation of others, and the people I’ve met will continue to influence my teaching practice.

What a great movie night in Webosaurs! The Nigel Marven webosodes have always been one of my favorite parts of Webosaurs and we celebrated by hitting up every theater on in the island. Starting out in the Croc Peninsula, we made our way around the entire island watching webosodes featuring crocodiles, tigers, bats and all kinds of other animals.

Lots of dinos out tonight for this event. We had to cook extra popcorn just to accommodate them! Webosaurs is such a fun place to play but it is also very much about learning. We’ve always been supporters of the animals and it is such a treat to be able to learn more about them with webosodes. Seeing Nigel Marven pet a tiger is an incredible thing just to watch. Thanks to everyone who came out tonight, it was really fun.

Hmmm… things are starting to get interesting here. What could Nigel Marven have to do with this Flyboy trip mania?

Today was another great day to be a giant lemon.  To hear kids ask when is Marvin coming to see us was espcially nice and made me feel good beacause that means they are interested in what I have to say.  The kids seemed to like my new book and were particularly interested in my friend Helen the Melon who is great at biathlon.  Again this could not have been possible without an amazing staff.  Set up by my good friend Mrs. Zister and the fantastic librarian Mrs. Nelson, I was able to share my story Champions of the Garden Games with the kindergarden to grade 3 classes at Queen Mary elementary school in Hamilton, Ontario.  Looking forward to my next reading in Winona, but for now its time to take a break and party with my friends to celebrate my new book release.  See you on Monday, and don’t forget to watch hockey night in Canada this weekend.

Today was the first reading of my new book Champions of the Garden Games: Winter Fun For Everyone.  What a nice treat to begin my writing career at A.M. Cunningham, the elementary school which I attended, until I was 10 years old.  Special thanks to Mrs. McQueen and the staff who were absolutely fantanstic and very supportive and the children who were incredibly well behaved.  I will definitely be posting the pictures on my flikr account for everyone to see and to show the world there is a new lemon in town, and his name is Marvin…

Being a newcomer to the Gateway Men’s Chorus, this year has been an exciting one for me.  I have a reflection on how the weekly rehearsals are going.  The Chorus is sounding awesome as a group.  We are going to perform an awesome set of music for the Holiday Hit Parade Christmas concert.  Please mark your calendars for December 11 and 12 at the Edison Theatre on the campus of Washington University.  These two shows will be truly a moving experience if you have never heard the Gateway Men’s Chorus perform.  Please join us for a great evening of outstanding music.
