Tyvärr har jag ingen film från turen, men jag lägger upp ett klipp med intervjuer från Sarah Palins supportrar som vill ha sina böcker signerade. Det finns varken några likheter mellan mig och Palin eller våra respektive “fans”.

I’ll start with a loose follow-up to last post’s Marxism/liberalism issue. I finished reading Zizek and came across a brilliant quotation from Samuel Beckett’s ‘Worstward Ho’:

“Fail. Try again. Fail better”

In the context of Zizek’s book it is understood as ‘call to arms’ for Marxists to continue the effort to once more rise from the ashes. Time is important, as financial crisis opened the window of opportunity for radical change and for Marxists to try again – despite a probable failure. But hopefully a better one. I’ve put the quotation as my facebook status (without any context) and the reply I’ve got is quite symptomatic. A friend countered with corporate humour – Dilbert:

“If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Then quit. No use being a fool about it.”

I found it ominously intriguing. When Marxism says “Try again. Fail better.” corporate culture says: “Try again. Then quit.”

It may seem that the ‘Fail better’ part is defeatist and shows hopelessness of the situation. But it is not. As Dupuy says: ‘[a catastrophe’s] actualization – the fact that it takes place – … retroactively creates its necessity’. Therefore to be prepared and avoid another catastrophe we need to act as if it was inevitable. One needs to think beyond ‘now’. Interestingly, there’s a strong parallel with bushido – samurai’s code. The main tenet of the way of the samurai is to live as if one was already dead – nicely showed in Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Ghost Dog’. As a side note, Jarmusch in his other movies was inspired by Beckett. Coming back to bushido, dying without achieving one’s aims is regarded as cowardice and is therefore the worst sin. So while ‘Fail better’ is about constant reinvention and struggle, ‘Then quit’ is a call for immediate seppuku of ideas contrary to corporate capitalism.

Since Samuel Beckett seems to be a sponsor of this post I have to mention a brilliant commission for Tate’s Turbine Hall by a Polish artist Miroslaw Balka.

How It Is – a giant box filled with almost complete darkness. An absolute must-see, or rather must-can’t-see. Check out the photo and you’ll know what I mean.

What does this work have to do with Beckett? It’s titled ‘How It Is’ – the title taken from Beckett’s novel as according to Balka they share a similar sense of minimalism.

I have taken these shots on a recent walk along Thames and was thinking of temporal inconsistency – breaking away from ‘now’, not only in the context of a catastrophe – at least not a world-threatening one – but more prosaically in the context of peeing.

Peeing is, of course, very important when you walk a lot and the ever-present issue is ‘where?’. I always have reservations before walking into a pub/restaurant to pee. Even if I have been there before. Assuming you have the same, I find it interesting that we struggle to break away from ‘now’ and feel it’s not appropriate to use a toilet without being a customer ‘now’. But what if you’ve been a customer before? And probably will be one in the future? I think we struggle to see ourselves in the totality of time and put too much emphasis on ‘now’. So in a radical spirit I say: let’s stop! Past actualization and future probability means we have paid our toilet dues and will continue to pay them in the future! Let’s take our moral reservations and flush them with vengeance! In my personal call to arms I say:

If you have ever ‘Failed’ your bladder because of misguided morality fuelled by limitations in perception of time ‘Try again!’. As if you knew next time you’ll ‘Fail better’.

This is the true way of the walking samurai.

He demonstrates how there has been an “accelerated replacement of noncapitalist by capitalist forms of agricultural development” and a “concomitant displacement of the peasantry and its conversion into a rural proletariat. This has occurred along with an increase in rural to urban and transnational migration”; promotion of “flexible…work in the new agro-export platforms”; a move to “predominance of female workers in these platforms”; and “the articulation of local agricultural systems…to global agricultural and industrial food production and distribution chains.”

Jeffery R. Webber, of University of Regina, reviews the book Latin America and Global Capitalism: A Critical Globalization Perspective by William I. Robinson in the October edition of the Monthly Review:

The main weakness in this otherwise compelling portrait of the political economy of the Latin American countryside today is the one-sided structural power allotted to capital. Opportunities for increases in agricultural workers’ bargaining power under certain conditions, such as those examined by Ben Selwyn in his important study of export grape production in North East Brazil, are elided.

It’s a damned shame that the opportunity for African Americans to claim their long overdue place of honor in American government has been squandered with the election of Comrade Obama!

There are many who unlike Comrade Obama would have brought actual EXPERIENCE and VALUABLE contributions to the stregnth and security and future prosperity of our great nation.

I still have faith in your ability to do so!

Tonight I watched “Band of Brothers” again. It is an unforgettable story of just one company of soldiers during the Invasion of Europe during WWII. All of their dedication and efforts and suffering and sacrifice…As remarkable and horrific as they were…Only represent the smallest fraction of the greater story. Their actions were repeated by many men. In many conflicts. All on our behalf.

The Nation that these men fought so hard to defend has dishonored them by recklessly abandoning the  course they have set for us and the principles they have fought and died for.

This nation has allowed vile political and ideological forces to  gain first a foothold within our political parties and government. And now they have been elevated to the highest positions of the U.S. Government.

Your support for Liberal and leftist radicals is a direct slap in the face to all good men who have ever served or great nation.

Perhaps you should ask yourselves if you have ever been…or ever will be worthy of the privilege of receiving the freedom and benefits that they have provided to us all.

There is still time to change your twisted and selfish ways.

There is still time to seek the truth…rather than to fuel the lies of those who pretend to offer you HOPE and CHANGE.

The 2010 Elections are not far off.

Do the right thing for a change…REMOVE the Liberals and Leftists and Marxists and Socialists from every level of political power and influence.

Vote for Democrats and Republicans and Independents who are willing to represent time-honored values and principles. Not selfish and deceptive ideological failures such as Socialism!

As you watch this video of Jacob Bronowski’s cautions, think for a moment about what it must be like for him to stand on the ground where his slaughtered ancestor now rest. Mr. Bronowski explains from his own personal experiences, the devastating effects of trying to gain ‘absolute knowledge’ and ‘absolute power’. The interview, when conducted by Michael Parkinson in 1973 was said to be his [Parkinson's] most memorable interview.

When I heard Carol Browner quoted as saying, “the science is settled”, I could not help but think of Bronowski’s words as he stood atop the ashes of his family and loved ones.  You see, for any one man or organization to gain supreme or absolute power, a portion of that power must be relinquished or overturned from somewhere else. In Nazi Germany’s case, the power was ‘taken’ from the Jews with force. This type of genocide has never taken place in America for obvious reasons; a)the people in America have always (in our history) maintained more power than their government (until now). b)A governing body has never been able to execute an agenda contrary to popular request (until now).

Our system of government (The Constitution) has protected its people for years, until now. I can assure you that when government is ‘allowed’ to make decisions based on what ‘they’ think is right for the people as opposed to what ‘the people’ think is right for themselves, it is surely the beginning of something terrifyingly similar to Bronowski’s lesson from Auschwitz.

Comrade Obama is marching America directly into the hellish fires of Marxism and Socialism. Many of you were or continue to be  blinded by his way with words. You were ready for his promise of change. Some still believe he can deliver! And his delivery is well under way. The cost of the fulfillment of his promises will be the destruction of the greatest nation known to mankind.

W.H. Auden is probably my favorite poet, and the only poet I’ve read enough of that I feel like I could discuss seriously without feeling like a giant fraud. His poem “Law Like Love” is undoubtedly the best known among lawyers, for obvious reasons, and from a quick search, the poem seems to have been quoted in law review articles over 40 times. It says something about Auden that his other works are also quoted relatively often in legal academia, a community that, in general, does not pay all that much attention to poetry.

Auden’s appeal, for me, is that he embodies some strange brand of cynically ironic libertarianism. How else would you describe a line like “To be free/is often to be lonely”? Still, his libertarian streaks are often overlooked, as Auden is better known for his dabblings in Marxism. Two of his most famous poems were, technically, communist propaganda, but his later repudiation of them is telling. The poems were removed from his later collections for being “dishonest,” and, as Auden described it, “A dishonest poem is one which expresses, no matter how well, feelings or beliefs which its author never felt or entertained.”

Auden’s communism was not based in some economic theory, or in any desire for the state to control the machinery of civilization. In Auden’s view, communism’s appeal was that it provided a path to freedom from the oppressive coercion of the State. As he wrote in his poem “New Year Letter,”

“Who has ever met a poet (at least one who has had any success) for whom the real attraction of Communism did not lie in its premise that, under it, the state should wither away for others as it has already withered away for him?”

I’m pretty sure the idea of Auden-as-a-libertarian is not exactly widespread, but under the brand of textualist interpretation that Auden endorsed, I don’t think it’s an unfair characterization. His communism was motivated by much the same impulses that motivate libertarian ideology today, and he was unquestionably anti-totalitarian and pro-individual. His poem the “The Unknown Citizen” is my favorite of his commentary on the state verses the individual, and I wanted to share it here below. I always feel like it should be read alongside Epitath on a Tyrant, so go check that one out as well, it’s short.

As a side note, to carry on with my quest to show how every topic is, in some way, connected to international law, I’ll also mention that Auden translated the work of Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General to the United Nations.

Fresh new polls out by Rasmussen Reports shows that although 26% of American voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President, 41% STRONGLY DISAPPROVE of Obama, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -15. And this is the second straight day at -15, which is Obama’s lowest Approval Index rating yet. And for the first time in the Obama era, the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Approval Index has been in negative double-digit territory for nine straight days.

But that may be the good news for Leftists, Democrats and RINO Republicans. According to Rasmussen, there is a massive divide of 74% of African-Americans Strongly Approving of Obama, with only a tiny 19% of white voters agreeing. When, oh, when will Black Americans see that they left the plantation for the Democrat’s Jim Crow and KKK wayward ways, only to be given the right to vote in the Sought in exchange for government handouts that have RUINED YOUR FAMILIES, neighborhoods, schools, murdered your offspring, and basically have withheld the Great American Dream from you yet again? Just a question.

On the economy,  just 34% now give the President good or excellent marks, while thirteen percent more (47%) say he is doing a poor job. Overall, 46% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance, while 54% disapprove, and 97% of African-American voters approve of Obama, while 61% of white voters disapprove. Wow! They never even lowered the glass of Kool-Aid yet, have they?

This all comes as the GOP has tied it’s highest number of adherents to Dem counterparts in the Generic Congressional Ballot at 44% versus 37%. And voters not affiliated with either party continue to STRONGLY FAVOR Republicans over Democrats by a whopping twenty-four percentage points, 44% to 20%.

But wait! There’s more bad news for those Wealth Redistributors in Washington District of Corruption, where Marxism, Socialism, Radicalism, and insane debt spending run rampant in our nations’ Capitol. While Nancy Pelosi and other Wealth Redistributors are busy trying to saddle our grandchildren with even more Public Debt, only 21% believe that additional Stimulus Spending is best, and 62% believe tax cuts are a better way to create jobs and fight unemployment. A full 51% of Americans now say a better way to create jobs is to STOP ALL STIMULUS SPENDING NOW!

And as far as Obamacare is concerned, the American People are speaking LOUD AND CLEAR that WE DON’T WANT IT by a whopping 18%, with 56% OPPOSING, and only 38% in favor, the LOWEST LEVEL in nearly two dozen tracking polls conducted by Rasmussen since June. Prior to this, support never went below 41%.

Not only is Obama and the Democrats losing the battle to take over our capitalist nation through Obamacare Socialism, but only 21% strongly favor the plan, and 43% are strongly opposed.

But the bad news doesn’t stop there for Obamacare Socialism, since only 16% of Americans now think passage of the plan will actually lead to lower health care costs. Nearly four times as many (60%) think the Dem plan will increase health care costs, and 54% think passage of it will hurt the quality of care.

Americans are divided between Democrats, who favor Obamacare at 73%, and GOPers and unaffiliated voters, who DISAPPROVE at 83% and 70% respectively.

And for those that just love the idea of “free stuff” from the government such as an Obamacare Public Option, 63% of voters say guaranteeing that no one is forced to change their health insurance coverage is a higher priority than giving us a “public option” Government-Run Health Insurance Company. And a huge 83% say that proof of citizenship should be required before anyone can get health care assistance from a government program.

For those that think government has run the Post Office, Social Security, Medicare, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and a whole host of other bankrupt or near-bankrupt entities better than the Private Sector could, 47% trust the Private Sector more than government to keep health care costs down and the quality of care up, and two-thirds (66%) say an increase in Free Market Competition will do more than Government Regulation to actually reduce health care costs.

A full 53% of voters worry that the federal government will do too much regarding reacting to the America’s financial problems, which is up seven points since Obama took office.

“The most important fundamental is that 68% of American voters have health insurance coverage they rate good or excellent,” Scott Rasmussen, president of Rasmussen Reports, wrote in the Wall Street Journal. “Most of these voters approach the health care reform debate fearing that they have more to lose than to gain.”

Earlier polls show 48% nationwide favored the abortion ban, but just 13% of voters wanted abortion coverage mandated in the legislation, and only 31% believe Congress has a good understanding of the proposed health care reform.

Last month for the first time since Oct. 2007 voters rated government ethics and corruption as more important than the economy. But now 76% give it a second place standing, with 85% of voters considering the issue of the economy as very important, topping a list of 10 key electoral issues regularly tracked by Rasmussen. GOPers and voters that are not affiliated with either major political party put more emphasis on Government Ethics and Corruption than Democrats do. Health care is in third place with 66% of voters saying it is a very important issue, and Republicans are trusted more than Democrats are on the top three issues.

And did you know that Democrats are doing worse than Republicans are under President Obama and his Democratic cohorts in Congress as far as unemployment is concerned? Fifteen percent of Democrats are currently unemployed, versus just 9.9% of Republicans who are unemployed and looking for work.

As far as the country heading in the right direction is concerned, only 31% of voters agree, the LOWEST matched only two times this year, last time in early October.  Sixty-four percent believe we are HEADED IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. Breaking the numbers down, 57% of Democrats say the country is heading in the right direction, but only a tiny 9% of Republicans and 22% of voters not affiliated with either party feel the same way. A solid 89% of Republican and 72% unaffiliated voters believe the country is HEADING DOWN THE WRONG TRACK.

• J.D. Hayworth, a conservative former U.S. congressman, earns 43% of the vote even though he has not formally announced, while McCain earns 45% of the vote.

A National Nightmare, Indeed

In a Democratic fundraising speech in Iowa over the weekend, Vice President Joe Biden told party loyalists that opponents of the Obama administration’s agenda “should be worried about us, for we are their worst nightmare.” Duh.

Finally we can agree on something, Joe. Even the liberal New York Times reports that at the current level of federal spending, the annual interest on the national debt will exceed $700 billion by 2019 — compared with $202 billion this year. Some forecasters predict it will be much higher. This additional half-trillion dollars a year in interest is more than our current combined expenditures on education, energy, homeland security and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Oh, and the Times isn’t even factoring in the cap-and-trade nightmare you and Barack have in store for us, Joe — you know, that urgent legislation to catapult the nation back into Third World status based on hysteria generated by fraudulent science and corrupt zealots and politicians.

Nor is the Times including in its calculations the additional debt that would result from Obamacare.

Joe, when The New York Times is sounding the warnings over the exploding national debt, you and Barack insist not only on not reversing your disastrous course but also on making it worse. How can reasonable people assume anything other than that you are trying to run this nation into the ground financially?

Don’t dare keep telling us your hyper-ambitious spending is a necessary evil required to deliver us from a financial crisis you inherited. Whatever crisis we face is debt-related, purely and simply. Everything else is manageable. Yet you all are deliberately increasing our indebtedness as far as the eye can see, without the slightest pretense of scaling back in this millennium. In fact, you are laboring to establish further entitlements and institutional changes that would generate exponential burdens on our debt and would be enormously difficult for any responsible and financially sane successor to undo, much less reverse.

Adding insult to injury, you are spending this money not to improve (“stimulate”) the economy — which even the most politically and economically illiterate should now realize — but to restructure American society, dismantle our free enterprise system and impose in its place a command-control economy and political system — in which life’s decisions, including over our private health care, are dictated from Washington.

But while you and Barack are hoisting your wrecking ball, could you please spare us the pseudo-sanctimony and transparent populism in telling us that it will take “grit and determination” to outlast the “special interests” on Wall Street and the insurance industry to pass your destructive agenda?

You both know better. When you have to bribe Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., with a larcenous $300 million addition to your Senate bill (I know, you’re pretending it’s just Harry Reid’s bill) that’s specifically earmarked just for her state — at the expense of the rest of the states and the national interest — something smells to high heaven. You could at least have the decency to admit this provision to raise the bill’s cost by increasing Medicaid subsidies for “certain states recovering from a major disaster” is not even motivated to help Louisiana, but to buy Landrieu’s vote. And you want to talk to us, Joe, about the corruption of special interests?

Special interests, Joe? Is that how you describe 56 percent of the American people, who now oppose Obama’s plan? And that’s without even knowing the half of it. Or maybe you would describe them as dangerous protesters or domestic terrorists?

But, Joe, I do applaud you for your candor in telling your fawning supporters, “I can tell you with absolute certainty: (Barack’s) resolve has never waivered for one instant.”

Bull’s-eye, Joe. You and Barack believe you know better than the American people what is good for them, and you only care what they think to the extent that it makes your job more difficult when they oppose you.

But if you told the truth about your plan — that it would cost dramatically more than you pretend (especially considering that the benefits wouldn’t begin to be paid until 2014 and that taxes would increase almost immediately); that the public option would subsume private care; that the federal government would ration care; that medical choice would be drastically reduced; that you are still trying to secure federal funding for abortion; that you intend to cover currently illegal immigrants; that after all your hype about promoting this bill to achieve universal coverage, millions would remain uninsured and penalized, to boot; that medical quality would be seriously reduced; and that overall costs would increase — your support for the bill would be in the single digits.

So keep chanting it, Joe; you are indeed a national nightmare.

From listening to his spiel, it is ostensibly about national security concerns. Certainly hacking attempts on government websites are dangerous to our safety as a nation, not to mention another drain on the taxpaying citizens. If I were tasked with the job of cybersecurity, I’d probably feel much the same way.

However, the subtle context is there: the internet makes it harder for the government to disseminate propaganda.

Now, before you think I am going off on a General Jack D. Ripper type rant, I assure you that I am not. All I am saying is that the government does have a much harder job at spinning lies and deceptions, as do the dinosaur news media outlets.

And it really bugs them.

If America needs to fire Obama and Senator Reid, which I STRONGLY think we should, then Nancy Pelosi needs to be FIRED as well, and given a one-way ticket right BACK to San Francisco, where she fits right in.

Never mind that I owe this money. Never mind that my children owe this money. But my grandchildren? Maybe their grandchildren? When will the Democrats in Congress and the RINO Republicans that join them get the message that WE DO NOT WANT CONGRESS TO SPEND ANY MORE OF OUR CHILDREN’S MONEY!?!?!?

Pelosi wants the government to spend more despite the FACT that the Stimulus Bill has turned out to be a TOTAL FAILURE AND ‘JOKE‘ ACCORDING TO WHITE HOUSE propaganda estimates that unemployment wouldn’t go above 8 percent. But those were ‘the good ol’ days – BEFORE double-digit unemployment of 10.2% that is currently projected to soar towards a scary and possible volatile 15 percent.

The Democrats’ idea of spending your hard-earned tax dollars is to give it to ACORN, SEIU, and a whole host of other Democrat Special Interests groups, entities and projects, while maintaining no real accountability as far as how many jobs were created, or even a tracking method to determine if congressional districts are real or not.

One thing seems to me to be certain: The Democrats’ Porkulus Payback Package was good for creating MORE corruption, waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer’s money. But maybe Nancy Pelosi through her twisted logic thinks that if we just spend more money through government ‘jobs bills,’ we will finally dig down deep enough to finally touch CHINA directly (this is a joke).

“We have to shed any weakness that anybody may have about not wanting to be confrontational on this subject for fear that we’d be labeled not sensitive to the deficit,” Pelosi said, in a recording purportedly posted by Think Progress according to this website.

I can’t describe the total seething anger at the Speaker’s unimaginable mindset that government is the answer to our problems, when just the OPPOSITE is true: government CAUSED the economic meltdown by not reigning in Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, and allowing the enabling monetary policies thereof by Fed Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. Even though Bush and Republicans tried to reform the twin behemoths, the Democrats cried racism and used class warfare tactics to shut down opposition to reform. And this was all started by Barack Obama and his helping ACORN win passage of the Community Reinvestment Act that lowered borrowing standards across America per threat of lawsuit and/or direct ACORN thuggery activism.

Now we have the top ACORN guy in the W.H., and a Democratic lap-dog Congress now in power on Capitol Hill that not only has a love affair with ACORN, but also with it’s companion group, SEIU. This recipe has led to record spending, record deficits, record amounts of money spent by government to lose private sector jobs, auto bailouts, more ACORN corruption, and a whole host of other domestic and military problems.

My anger is that the Democrats wasted a trillion dollars on PORK, then are planning on passing Obamacare, cap-and-trade, card check and other legislation that WILL KILL AMERICAN JOBS even further. She is truly a frightening character with socialism as her cause, in my opinion.

“We’re never going to decrease the deficit until we create jobs, bring revenue into the Treasury, stimulate the economy so we have growth,” said Pelosi.

When Reagan and Bush cut taxes, MORE REVENUE WENT TO THE FEDERAL TREASURY! Look it up, NANCY!!! When private money is taxed too much, LESS TAX REVENUE ENDS UP IN THE TREASURY. But then again, when did any Marxist understand this basic economic principle?
